Female Celebs Share Keys to Fit Figures

Former Ms. World representative Athaliah Samuel
T
he hottest bodies across Trinidad and Tobago are usually spotted around carnival time. However with what’s coined “the summertime”, yes, even here in tropical T&T, just around the corner, it’s safe to assume that there’s a natural inclination for socialites and local celebs to maintain their curves and cuts for the many events they’ll pose at, during this time of year. Former Ms. World representative Athaliah Samuel is one person who’s got a body to die for. She’s often spotted on the runway strutting her stuff and when she’s at a social event, she’s never afraid to bare those long, toned legs. Athaliah says back in the day, she used to run track and that training regimen included doing lots and lots of squats. These days her toned body is owed in part to those squats, coupled with a variation of leg raises, plank exercises and something she calls the bunny hop. Samuel who also models full time says the pushup form of the plank exercise works well but coupled with opening and closing the legs, and the mountain climb plank exercise, you just can’t go wrong! The chocolate complexioned queen of the Caribbean runway is ready for the ‘summer’ in the Caribbean she says, explaining that she’ll be doing the exact opposite of what she did during her carnival work out routine. “I wanted to build mass for carnival but now I’m focused on shedding that extra mass around my hips, thighs and gluts,” she said. Samuel is dedicated to looking good. She understands that her body’s fitness augurs well for her professional life. “I have to maintain how I look for my professional career. If you’re not on your A game, you’ll lose your respect as a model and so it’s part of the job,” she said. Asked how often she exercises, the former Miss World T&T said during her preparations for Miss World, she would work out twice per day, everyday. Nowadays however, she says she exercises approximately four or five times per week. Mannish Bod?... Oh Hell No! Now, it’s a given that Fay-Ann Lyons Alvarez has one of the

She’s sculpted and ripped when it comes to those abs, but according to the soca mom, her body has a natural athletic look and she admits that even prior to taking up exercise and nutrition as she has in recent years, she always had her six pack. “Anybody who knows me knows that I always had abs. I have more now than before since I started eating better and dieting and now I’m about five pounds heavier than I was back then,” she divulged. Lyons-Alvarez says she tries to keep active and isn’t much of a gym lover, except for the weight training but she certainly loves running. When it comes to what she con-
sumes, the wife, singer, business manager and mom says she really eats anything but in moderation. “I eat anything. Everybody’s metabolism is different but I eat everything in moderation. I don’t use MSG, although there are some seasonings that I like that have it, but I tend to use those very sparingly. I make my own seasonings at home,” she said. FayAnn explained that during carnival when she’s hard at work, her body is leaner, telling us that off- season, she tends to put on some extra pounds. “With all the hotel food and stuff, it’s hard not to,” she said. Lyons-Alvarez loves smoothies and can’t get enough of her fresh fruit. Shurwayne Details Career Moves
hurwayne Winchester is committed to being the industry force he once was during his multiple Road March and Soca Monarch winning years. As such, the living legend of the artform decided to make some changes to his approach post C2K14 and heading into 2015. One such change was tweaking his management team to include the services of JC Management Company. While it is not an allout management change from his SW Limited led operation, the collaborative effort will see JC Management Company Limited serve as the official booking agent for Shurwayne Winchester and the band YOU. Also, Jelan Cumberbatch who is the founder of JC Management is undertaking the role of managing all social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Vine for SW Limited, Shurwayne Winchester and YOU. “We are excited to add him to
our roster of artists. Shurwayne and I had several conversations earlier this year and decided that we share similar visions and goals and want to embark on working together,” states Cumberbatch Winchester shared similar sentiments. “I am happy to have my company, SW Limited and JC Management working together to
achieve the goals we have set and I envision nothing but success and positivity in this collaboration" Winchester said via press release. ET&T also spoke to Winchester who posited that his incredible workload called for the extra help as it would afford him the opportunity to be more focused on his craft. This focus has already led to new mid-year material from Winchester such as the Maxi Priest assisted “Girl I Miss You.” Shurwayne detailed that it was important to keep putting music out even outside of Carnival as is it is difficult to tell which songs would blow up. Winchester added that while the song might not be huge in Trinidad it might have a great impact overseas. He spoke of being surprised to visit Antigua and have all the DJ’s request plates of his ‘My Team’ single which flew under the radar of many Trinis. As part of the exclusive inter-
view special fitness issue Shurwayne took time to speak on his fitness regimen. “It’s not about looks for me. I work out for my general fitness and health. I train at Long Circular Gym with Gerard and Winston to get a good mix of cardio and strength training. I also try to watch what I put into my body, but I thank God that I have a fast metabolism that helps me stay lean” he said. The singer went on to say that in the absence of the gym he still stays active by going for an outdoor run from time to time. Shurwayne added that even his performances provide him with great cardio workouts that don’t require him to do as much work as people with more inactive jobs. With all that said, Winchester is poised for a big year in 2015. His JC Management collaborators have echoed those sentiments. Now, it’s just time to wait and see what the Tobago titan and his team produces.

Champeon releases “Woman’s Anthem” C
olumbia, South Carolina – Ronnel Ramirez known to Soca music fans by his sobriquet Champeon, has recently stepped out of his comfort zone and released a new Reggae track entitled “Woman’s Anthem”. The South Carolina based entertainer created this new Reggae offering with the objective of affirming all of society’s women of substance along with all their wonderful contributions. He appropriately released the song in May (a month synonymous with positive sentiment towards women). The song was written by Champeon and arranged, produced and mastered by AJ & Sixman beats (Quantum Beats) and features the melodic sounds of the Steel Pan on a smooth Reggae beat. According to Champeon, “I wrote the song as a tribute to all the supportive women of the world for being sturdy rocks for every man and also as a big ‘Thank You’ to the special wom4
en in my family i.e. my wife and mother”. When asked about his definition of a ‘woman of substance’ he shared, “To me a woman of substance is one who is strong and passionate in every sense,

from her sweet, sensual aroma to the manner with which she takes care of herself and the household, and is her man’s right hand. This song is for women who are not only beautiful in character but who also possess strength in char-
acter i.e. the strength to overcome adversity and triumph despite the odds”. Rizon Regarding his foray into the world of Reggae, Champeon stated that although he is known for recording and performing Soca he also writes a variety of musical styles and decided after Trinidad’s 2014 Carnival to create a positive song, a song which organically became the uplifting Reggae track “Woman’s Anthem”. Champeon added, “I wanted to be and do something different on this track and my spirit guided me to release my first Reggae single. Champeon looks forward to performing this new track at his many upcoming North-American Caribbean festival gigs and remains open to future Soca and Reggae collaborations. He further stated that the song which has so far been receiving positive feedback from fans and industry colleagues is a show of appreciation to the feminine gender and a dedication to the 300 girls who were recently kidnapped in Nigeria. Local Rosie brings Autism Awareness News to the forefront
N
ew York, NY (Sonique Solutions) – Vincentian-born Rosanne SmallMorgan is making several strides on her mission to bring more awareness and understanding about the life-changing issue of Autism within minority and Caribbean communities. Over the past few years, Rosanne, who is a radio host, newspaper columnist, consumer advocate, comedienne, wife and mother overcame several life challenges and is now a well known advocate for Autism. Affectionately referred to as ‘Rosie’ by her many fans, readers and social media followers, she continues to progress from strength to strength on her journey to share information on this topic of universal relevance as well as to provide support to families with Autistic children. From a personal perspective,
Rosie’s journey was fuelled by her experience with her 12 year old son Zane who is autistic. According to her, “Even though he’s quite high functioning and smart, it has been an uphill battle and fight to get him accumulated in the society around us. I also found that there weren’t many people in
my Caribbean Community who were talking openly and candidly regarding their trials re: Autism”. The journey continued with her sharing her family’s escapades with Zane, his pitfalls and triumphs via blogging. This led to other mothers and households revealing their stories about their own experiences with autism. This blogging initiative along with Rosie’s authentic passion for speaking on the topic encouraged several Caribbean mothers to contact her regarding their trials and even motivated some to start their own support groups to benefit families. Rosie is now a noted and in-demand speaker on Autism. She has graced several forums in North-America and the Caribbean such as the Vincy Cares Awards dinner in New York and the annual Karen Hind’s Phenomenal Woman’s Conference in St. Vincent and The Grenadines. In order to impart information on this heavy topic, during
her speaking engagements Rosie utilizes her talent for storytelling and stand-up comedy as her general approach. She shared, “I think I can help bring more of a spotlight and understanding through my comedic type talks/lectures and helpful, personal tips about autism and give feedback to the audience on how our family handled particular challenges”. Even amidst authoring a soon to be released book on autism and with aspirations of working along with Special Needs Schools, Education Departments, Churches, Rotary Clubs, the Special Olympics, any other organization that supports Autism or special needs, Rosie remains determined to make the topic less taboo in the Caribbean market. “My hope is that my presentations will open up the dialogue for several people to come forward and either seek assistance or start support groups throughout our islands and the Diaspora as a whole”.

Five First Aid Supplies Every Home Gym Should Have

veryone feels like a superhero when they’re working out. The endorphins are flowing, your heart is pumping, and you’re feeling good. But accidents can happen at any time and if you’re working out at home you should be prepared for such mishaps. First, you should never workout alone. It doesn’t do nearly as much good to have first aid supplies in your home gym if nobody is there to help you use them.
1
Ice Packs: An ice pack is standard for any household, and is crucial to have on-hand if you’re working out. Timely application of ice for strains – and sometimes after a workout – can prevent inflammation and reduce swelling.
2
Elastic Bandages: If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to hurt joints or ligaments, you know the value of elastic bandages. Used for com-
pression and stabilization, elastic bandages are essential to helping prevent further injury.
3
Pain Relievers: An anti-inflammatory is always a good thing to have around. In addition to applying ice, an oral anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen works to keep inflammation down and relieve pain after an injury. If you or any of your workout buddies have sensitivities to ibuprofen, aspirin and/or acetaminophen are essential to have on-hand.
4
Defibrillator: Cardiac arrest during an exercise routine is not an uncommon event. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) give an electrical shock to a stopped heart to restore a heartbeat and can be operated easily by non-emergency personnel.
5
First-Aid Guide: Be sure you know how to treat any exercise-related injury properly! There are many first-aid guides available that give easy-to-
understand instructions on how to treat almost any injury that can happen. This is an essential component to any first-aid kit! Exercise and diet are crucial to health, but sometimes the effects of stress and/or poor habits can weaken your body in ways that may not be apparent at first. This weakening can result in an unexpected injury or even cardiac arrest while exercising.

While they do not provide meals, they regularly do meal preparation demonstrations for clients as part of their “one stop supplementation and advice” shop strategy. ET&T caught up with the couple for a shoot and to get some great fitness insight from Imran himself. Fitness Philosophy Anyone can get fit. Anyone can be an athlete. Don’t focus on the negatives and don’t pay attention to the haters. Pain is negligible. Know that pain is temporary, but the glory is forever. Diet I believe in a good diet, but not in dieting. We live a lifestyle of healthy eating seven days a week. There are no cheat days. Fast food is the enemy. We incorporate lots of whole grains into a gluten free diet. We stay away from simple sugars and we don’t skip the salads whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. Motivation Your motivation is directly related to your goals. Some people use Carnival as a goal. Other people have a natural drive to work hard all year round. Some need the extra kick whether it’s someone shouting at them or cursing them out. It all depends on how badly you want it.
Supplements Supplements are a great boost to help you meet your goals, but you still require discipline, hard training and the right diet in order to achieve the best results. Check them out at http://facebook. com/Bodybyimran www.amgtt.com •

Brent Sancho
SEAT
F
ormer Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warrior Brent Sancho is a local legend thanks to his exploits at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and his stance for player rights after the global tournament. Always, outspoken and candid, Sancho caught up with ET&T for a Hot Seat interview. ET&T: Describe your post Soca Warriors life. Sancho: It has been much different. I had options to further my football, but with time and because of the arbitration process with the TTFF I began to lose my passion for the sport. I then turned toward coaching and administration. I gravitated to the administrative side more. I began at North East Stars with the support of the owner Darryl Mahabir, but things were always restrictive, as I had to run everything past the owner. Central FC was born out of that. I was able to put more of my vision into the club. Myself and my partner Kevin Harrison came up with a three, five and ten year plan and in the short time we’ve been here we have made tremendous strides. ET&T: What is one thing you would like to see changed about local football? Sancho: I may have to write an entire book to answer this. There are so many things. Accountability and Transparency… That should be the mantra that we adopt. That (Accountability and Transparency) is a problem not only in the Federation, but on varying levels in Trinidad. Football has become about the interest of individuals when people should come together for a greater good. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. There are templates from different established and successful federations all over the world,
which we can adopt. ET&T: What has been your proudest moment away from the football pitch? Sancho: The birth of my two children and fathering my two children. People always talk about the experience and until it happens to you, you cannot understand the joy. I can be having the worst day ever but when I walk through the door and see my kids they just brighten me up. They are truly a Godsend and blessing to me. ET&T: During your playing days in Scotland you were involved in a fracas stemming from a racist incident, which Nacho Novo detailed in his book. This was well publicized and led to court. Did you witness many race-related incidents during your time in Europe? Sancho: Racism was prevalent in Europe. In fact, it is quite prevalent in Trinidad as well. Trinidadians are very naïve when it comes to racism. We think that we can say whatever we want here and it isn’t classified as racist, but sometimes some of the words used in the stands at games is offensive. Fans may love you to death, but still use those remarks. Racism is all over. The problem is how it is dealt with. People need to be more serious with the penalties.
ET&T: Since this is the fitness issue, share with us how you keep fit? Sancho: I still play 3-4 times per week so I am active. Watching what I eat is important. As a former professional I can tell you that whenever I consume anything I am not supposed to my body immediately tells me I am doing something wrong. I feel sluggish and it is hard to function. I try to eat lots of salads and the proper food groups especially now that I am not training at the level I was. ET&T: Do you get treated like a celebrity here? Sancho: Friends would come over and I would get a lot of comments. People say they see it, but I don’t really see it. I think that is why it’s important the “Famous” people have to realize that we have to carry ourselves a certain way, because you think people aren’t noticing you, but they are watching. ET&T: Did you encounter more groupies coming at you in Europe or in Trinidad after the World Cup? Sancho: I was in a committed relationship several months before getting to the World Cup, but that didn’t stop them. The fanfare in T&T was remarkable after qualification. I had never seen anything like it. Across all races
they would come. People would do and say things that would really surprise you at the restaurants and nightclubs. I’d say definitely Trinidad. ET&T: Where did you feel more appreciated overall? Sancho: Overseas. The fanfare for the World Cup in Trinidad was abnormal, but other countries always have that respect for sports stars that we don’t have. After the World Cup I don’t think I ever paid for a meal in Europe. Every restaurant would just welcome you and people would look up to you. Trinidad needs to respect their sporting heroes more. ET&T: Finally, were you more angry at Peter Crouch or the referee after the infamous “hair pull” goal? Sancho: The whole country was mad at Peter Crouch, but he was just doing what he had to do by any means. I actually met him after and he could not understand the hate. I remember falling to the turf as the ball hit the net and I turned and looked at the ref and our eyes made four and he gave me the look of “I’m not going to disallow a goal against a big club in the World Cup.” However, to stay goalless with England for so long in a competitive match is something we should all be proud of.

Not Cool
he Fashion Police have been working hard over land and sea to ensure a couture crime-free Trinidad and Tobago. HowT ever, crimes of fashion are no different to regular crimes in the sense that, while it can be stymied, it can never be stopped.
Oh lawdy. Multiple criminals were spotted in bare foot mode. This may be down the islands, but it ain’t the beach. Keep your shoes on while you party. Corns are for soup. Exposed toes… not cool.
Underwear is for under clothing. This dude doesn’t seem to know this. His jockey shorts were on full blast since he decided to tuck his jersey in his undies while his pants were sagging. Not cool.

Since 1991, she has taught at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she holds the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies. Since the 1990s she has made around eighty appearances a year on the lecture circuit. In 1993, Angelou

life. She is highly respected as a spokesperson for Black people and women. Angelou's work is often characterized as autobiographical fiction. She did, however, make a deliberate attempt to challenge the common structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing, and expanding the genre. Her books, which centered on themes such as identity, family, and racism, are often used as set texts in schools and universities internationally. Some of her more controversial work has been challenged or banned in US schools and libraries.
