xford Dictionary defines an icon as “A person regarded as a representative symbol or as worthy of veneration.” No one can deny that T&T is not short of worthy icons in fields ranging from sport to music to politics. Here’s what some icons had to say when asked about what their definition of an icon is and what it means to them to be an icon in their field. West Indies cricketer Darren Bravo offered that being iconic refers to how much someone inspires others by what they do. “An icon speaks to one who has transformed or excelled at the highest order, in my case to play cricket for the West Indies. I don't consider myself an icon in this field but desperately aspiring to become, probably passing likes of Sir Viv Richards and Brian Lara. These men are recognized as such because of their world wide records. Some still stand today some 20 and 30 years later. To be looked at as an icon sometime in the future, if I so demonstrate record breaking qualities, then I would have exceeded personal goals and would inspire the

She shared her views as thus. "An icon is someone who many look up to because of their admirable and exemplary characteristics. Their untouchable intelligence and unique skill, fused with strong leadership qualities make them an icon in their field. LOCAL THE GOLDEN VOICE IS GONE NEWS BUT NOT FORGOTTEN W
hether it was atop a truck with Peter Minshall’s mas band; as a mentor to one of his many students, or as radio announcer both overseas and locally, Hollis ‘Holly T’ Thomas will be remembered as one of the most memorable voices to emanate from Trinidad. He was a staple of both AM and FM radio where he dominated radio for much of the 80’s. Apart from that, he founded the Announcers Broadcast Academy which provided a platform for budding broadcasters to learn their craft. Unfortunately, Thomas succumbed to a battle with lung cancer at the age of 71. He was a
known chain-smoker, but his true vice was broadcasting. His career spanned over three and a half decades with early stints in the United States of America at WHBI in New York, WBLS 107.5 FM and WLIB 1190 AM before joining the TBC (Trinidad Broadcasting Company). He was an avid lover of jazz music and he used his weight in radio to obtain a broadcast license
and open his own station dedicated to the genre (107.1FM). Despite his affinity for foreign music he was still very much Trini to the bone. In fact, he is often remembered most for one of his popular catch-phrases where he urged people to “Swizzle the Callaloo” (as opposed to blending it) during his popular Sunday program. With those things considered, it is easy to believe that iconic Trinidad and Tobago songstress Mavis John’s ‘Jazz in the Callaloo’ was inspired by Hollis. Industry professional Chris Boynes, TBC General Manager Steve Dipnarine and senior broadcaster Eddison Carr among others were quick to pay respects and speak of Thomas’ influence on the
media fraternity. Apart from being an image of professionalism and possessing an incredible baritone, he touched people in many ways. He was not one to be selfish with his talents and he trained several enterprising announcers. Thomas was instrumental in the careers of several celebrated journalists including Fazeer Mohammed. After his funeral, close friends and family (much of whom reside abroad) including his mother Edris, all gathered at one of Holly’s old haunts The Cruise Ship Complex where they ate, drank and listened to some of his favourite songs. ET&T salutes Holly Thomas for his legacy in the field. may he rest in peace.
STEPHANIE RAMLOGAN SHARES WHAT SHE LEARNED FROM FASHION ICONS N
ames like Heather Jones, Claudia Pegus, Meiling, Ecliff and Peter Elias are iconic in the industry in more ways than one. Aside from their spectacular designs, they have created an image of the fashion industry to the government that shows fashion to be a viable resource, by creating a number of groups and organizations. The T&T fashion industry employs more than 11,000 people either directly or indirectly and generates in excess of $25 million annually. In 2014, Prime Minister Bissessar stated that “the fashion industry and creative sectors of our country have the potential to assume an unprecedented level of leadership at home and abroad. We have significant evidence that points to you becoming an increasingly strong partner in how our economy will be sustained in the years to come.” These icons also serve as inspiration to new fashion entrepreneurs. They have acted as examples that successful fashion businesses in T&T are not a fairy tale, but quite achievable. Stephanie Ramlogan, fashion

designer and personal stylist/ shopper attests to this, saying that “Dianne Hunt especially, was instrumental in opening my own eyes to the potential existing in fashion as a career. This was at a Career Guidance event I had back in Form 3! 13 years ago when I said I wanted to be a fashion designer people thought I was a dreamer. These “icons” had a vision that no one else could see.” But what qualities go into the making of a fashion icon? Stephanie Ramlogan tells of her experiences with some top designers. She says, “Definitely diligence. Up

until recently Meiling told me that she does not easily take a day off even now. Now, fashion in T&T appears glamorous and so many of us get wrapped up in the fanciness and fall short when it comes to our professionalism. Simple courtesies like punctuality, efficient communication and timeline adherence go a long way. Also, resourcefulness. I always tell the story of one time I was working on a Claudia Pegus Fashion show, and as one of the models was lining up to walk the runway, one of the pick-up on her giant tulle skirt fell. Ms. Pegus jumped into action; pulling out a needle and thread
from God knows where, and fixed the skirt as the model was walking. This moment served as an analogy to the many conscious ideas and strategies put into having a fashion design business thrive even through the advent of cheap mass produced clothing arriving onto our shores.” These local designers can measure up on an international scale, as they are as equally interesting and inspiring as any icon anywhere. There is something to learn from their specific journeys to greatness. Of course as an emerging industry, there is room for more iconic figures, and everyone with such talent has the potential to be a strong force in the game. When asked what advice she would give to upcoming designers, Stephanie Ramlogan said “I think first of all they need to be realistic. Success comes neither quickly nor easily. Work is work. They need to prepare themselves with as much formal education they can get their hands on, and as much practical experience they can come by. Humility, courage, resilience, sacrifice and the acceptance that one never stops learning.”

ICONIC SONGWRITER SPEAKS AT LOCAL SYMPOSIUM
ongwriters do most of their work behind the scenes, so it’s understandable that so few of them are recognized by the general public. Fewer will ever become household names, but the music they create sure has the potential to infiltrate homes all over the world. Songwriter Angela Hunte Wisner is one of the most accomplished at her craft in the industry today. What makes it more special is the fact that she has Trini roots. Hunte worked on various projects with a veritable who's who of stars, from Snoop Lion and Miley Cyrus to Rihanna, Diddy, Britney Spears, Nas and more. Her most notable work was copenning and co-producing JayZ and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind’ which earned Angela her first Grammy award. The cel-
ebrated writer returned to Trinidad on vacation, but took some time to be the keynote speaker at COTT’s creator’s Symposium at the Arthur Lok Jack GSB’s Yara Auditorium. Jeanelle Frontin (CEO of Into The Red Event & Artist Management), Kern Elliot (Creator of the Chune music app) and
Keron “Sheriff” Thompson (producer of Differentology) were also guest speakers at the event. After a brief welcome from COTT CEO Josh Rudder, the panelists proceeded to explain their personal keys to creativity and how it could be channeled into a business medium. Frontin reminded the audience of musicians, songwriters and media practitioners that the entertainment road is not an easy one. She then went on to talk about the intricacies of marketing. Elliot passed around a device to display an unfinished version of his tune app and Sherriff spoke about the process of making the hit song Differentology with Bunji. He admitted that he did not know the song would be so big, but said his only thought at the time was to make good music.
In fact, when asked the secret to constructing a hit song, Sherriff stated that the main thing is making a good song and the potential to be a hit will always be there. However, the highlight of the event was Angela Hunte’s address. The very pregnant Hunte spoke about the various tactics she would use in order to shop around her written works. She also showed how her cunning allowed her to become the first person to ever write for Melissa Etheridge. She also blessed those in attendance with a sneak peek of her potential C2K15 release tentatively entitled “Trinidad.” Her stunning vocals capped off her speech before moderator Paul Richards fielded some questions from the crowd.

LOCAL KIRK THOMAS CELEBRATES NEWS A DECADE IN THE BIZ
Written by Daniela Nandlal
‘T
otal transformation’ are the words that come to mind when viewing Creative Director of Face of T&T and talented Makeup Artist, Kirk Thomas’ portfolio. He has the profound ability to transform his client’s faces using the right colours and techniques for any occasion. January 2014 Thomas celebrated 10 years as a MUA and though he admits he was a bit skeptical about entering such a profession, he agrees that it turned out to be a great business venture. After all, it’s not everyday you get to apply makeup to the face of the Honorable Kamla Persad Bisessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago.
Thomas also had his work featured in various international magazines throughout his career. Some of the highlights are the cover of SHE Caribbean, Essence Magazine and most recently, a Fashion spread for Vogue Italia. In addition, he has done makeup applications for various ad campaigns both locally and
internationally. He also worked on several soca artistes such as Allison Hinds, Patrice Roberts, Destra Garcia and Calypso Rose just to name a few. Exactly what makes his work so exquisite? It’s a combination of many variables. For starters, his perspective on makeup helps with the overall vision and application as in his opinion “makeup is meant to enhance and not conceal,” he says. “Furthermore it’s about celebrating a woman’s natural beauty and that’s why for each application I try to mimic what natural skin would look like.” Secondly, it’s his ability to use the culture of the Caribbean as a form of inspiration. He is not afraid to experiment with it since he posits “colour is who we are as a people.” Finally, there
is his exposure to art at a young age, as he believes this played a pivotal role in his career as a makeup artist. Thomas’s appreciation for diversity has also led him on another successful journey and was the main inspiration behind Faces of T&T. “I erased all criteria since beauty should not be subjected, but celebrated” he said. He further explained that it’s a platform for all women to display their beauty regardless of their educational background, skin colour or height. To view some of his most recent work and receive regular updates from this talented makeup artist check out his Facebook page at: KIRK THOMAS MAKEUP ARTISTRY.
ICONS, INNOVATION AND INDUSTRY AT 2014 CARIBBEANTALES FILM FESTIVAL T
he 2014 CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF) was indeed a landmark occasion as this year the festival broke boundaries in gaining additional recognition for the creativity and culture of the Caribbean. The festival which ran alongside the Toronto International Film Festival highlighted the region’s icons as well as some of its brightest and freshest filmmakers. The festival began brilliantly with a Red Carpet Gala and World Premiere of “The Glamour Boyz Again! Sparrow and Superior on the Hilton rooftop”. This auspicious occasion was underscored by the presence of the Mighty Sparrow himself who appeared in good health and spirits, much to the delight of the audience. Amidst historical anecdotes, ‘The Birdie’ as he’s affectionately called rendered several acappella versions of songs from his classic repertoire. The capacity crowd on hand happily sang along to such notable Sparrow hits as, ‘Jean and

Dinah’, ‘Dan is De Man’, ‘Education’ and ‘Obeah Wedding’. The CTFF offered a wide range of feature length and short films which represented many historical and cultural Caribbean facets. The featured films included, “Thunder in Guyana”, the story of Guyana’s most important political figures, Janet Rosenberg and Cheddi Jagan; “Forward Ever: The Killing of A Revolution”, that explores the 1983 US-led invasion of Grenada, that followed the execution of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and “Two Smart”, the second feature from Barbados-based Payday team, an offbeat comedic tale starring Soca star Alison Hinds.

Ten finalist films submitted to the Features Film Jury Team were judged based on criteria such as Understanding Caribbean Culture, Production Value/Professionalism: Directorial & Teamwork, Script work: storytelling narrative quality & style, International Marketability, Innovation, Cinematography and Editing. This year’s CTTF Market Incubator Program was a true success and benefitted a fortunate group of bourgeoning, cross-Caribbean filmmakers as it focused on series development for television and the web and offered one of a kind mentorship and networking opportunities. According to Incubator Manager and Mentor Dr. Rita Shelton Deverell, “The Caribbean Tales Incubator is an ever-evolving, growth-oriented program. This year we concentrated on sustainable series targeted at the worldwide African/Caribbean Diaspora, rather than one-offs. Popular series are what the industry and audiences demand, and our 8 producers each delivered excellent series products ranging from

BUJU BANTON COULD BE FREED THIS YEAR IF CONVICTION IS OVERTURNED Fans of incarcerated Reggae stalwart, Buju Banton are being given a legitimate ray of hope the singer will regain his freedom after his lawyer intimated Monday that his client may be freed from a U.S. federal prison this year, should his appeal to overturn his drug conviction be successful. The singer applied for a new trial earlier this year, via his legal team headed by Harvard University law professor, Charles Ogletree and was granted a reprieve in August after an American appeals court approved his request
to present oral arguments supporting his reasoning for wanting a new trial. However, no date or venue has been set as of yet, though it is expected to happen very soon. Said arguments are on the basis that Buju was entrapped by a paid U.S. informant and that his case was compromised after it was found that a juror in the singer’s February 2011 trial unlawfully researched aspects of his drug case while the trial was ongoing.
NEW BOB MARLEY MUSICAL TO DEBUT IN BALTIMORE NEXT MAY On the heels of the news that a musical based on Bob Marley’s childhood will debut in Jamaica this coming January, another musical chronicling the attempted assassination of the legendary singer and his self-imposed exile to the U.K. will debut in Maryland next May. The musical, simply titled Marley was written by Kwame Kwei-Armah, the Artistic Director for Center Stage theatre in Baltimore, where the musical will run from May 6 to June
15 of next year. The premiere will be a collaboration between Centre Stage and New York’s Public Theatre. Marley focuses particularly on the period of 1976-1978, particularly December of 1976 when Marley, his wife Rita Marley and then manager, Don Taylor were shot following an ambush at the singer’s Hope Road residence. Two days after the shooting, Marley performed at the Smile Jamaica concert as scheduled, but would relocate to England with his family due to fears over his safety.

Nick showed up to the launch of Chris and Adrienne Bosh‘s new tie line, Mr. Nice Tie, in New York City, with a beautiful younger woman by his side. Madonna has hired Alicia Keys for her new album. On Wednesday, September 10, the iconic singer teased the collaboration while promoting the R&B star's new song "We Are Here" that was released earlier this week. Madonna shared an Instagram photo of her holding up a sign that reads, "I am here to f**k s**t up #UnapologeticB**ch." She captioned the snap with, "#wearehere. Alicia Killin it on my record...#livingforlove." Diplo, with whom Madge has been working on the follow-up to 2012's "MDNA", also promoted Key's song by uploading a photo of him holding a similar sign saying "I am here 4-ever." He also shared another picture of him and Keys sitting together at a piano. The "Material Girl" hitmaker's yet-to-be-titled new album has been in the works for a while. In addition to Diplo, she has worked with Avicii and singer Natalia Kills for the new LP. Ariel Rechtshaid, who's worked with everyone from Charli XCX to Vampire Weekend, and MNEK are also involved in the project.

MODEL MANIA
Name: Delicia Dyer Age: 20 Hometown: Couva Hobbies: Dragon Boating, Reading Career: CSA at Piarco International Airport. She claims that she doesn’t have any pet peeves. This may make her seem like a fake to some, but based on her personality it just might be true. No doubt Delicia’s bubbly personality would have assisted her immensely in her customer service oriented job at the airport as well as with her burgeoning modeling career (Heaven knows, the displays of diva behavior by some models are becoming played out). She has invested three years of her life so far into modeling and she has the backing of some of T&T’s best and brightest minds in the industry. Some of the photographers she worked with so far are Nigel Reid, John Tilokee and Eustace Dyer. While she has shown serious potential as a model, Delicia admits that her current goals are to complete a Journalism degree and become a flight attendant. No doubt, becoming a flight attendant would afford her the opportunity to travel the world and experience the work of her favourite designers firsthand. These designers include, Oscar de la Renta, Coco Chanel and Ralph Lauren. Meanwhile, she is preparing herself mind, body and soul to facilitate success however it may come. Keeping fit is one way she is ensuring a promising future. Lots of cardio and dragon boating does the trick. Yet, her favourite feel sexy tip is not about the physical at all. She says, “Maintain high confidence and self-esteem above all.”

ET&T SOOWAN SPEAKS IN THREE'S
HOT
S
SEAT
oowan Bramble is one of the most accomplished local models to ever grace a ramp. She was honored by SFFWT at their Pioneer Awards and US-based Karib Nation Inc singled out Bramble for its Award of Excellence in Runway & Print Modeling to cap off a great last couple months. ET&T caught up with the busy beauty for an interview. WHAT ARE YOUR 3 MOST IMPORTANT PERSONAL BEAUTY TIPS? 1. I will never sleep with my make up on. No matter how tired I am or how late I get home. Cleansing, Toning, Masking and moisturizing daily is the best way to keep my skin healthy, beautiful and glowing. 2. Exercising, hydrating, eating healthy and rest are important. Exercising keeps me strong and keeps my appearance tight, toned and smooth. For me it does not make sense to work out, but have an unhealthy diet. Also, getting enough rest makes my body feel rejuvenated. 3. Having a healthy mental state of mind is an important beauty tip of mine, because I believe that when you are around genuine people and you fill your mind with positive thoughts staying away from gossip, there is a radiance and confidence that shine from within. WHAT ARE THE 3 BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT MODELLING? 1. Locally and throughout the Caribbean, models don’t realize that the modeling industry is serious BUSINESS and that respect for this field is required in order to do well. Like any other business, there are rules to be followed… For
example: being on time, learning and wanting to perfect your craft, and being responsible and professional. 2. Models seem to misunderstand that modeling is not a bed of roses. The notion of wanting to become famous, looking glamorous and make a lot of money comes only after years of dedication, hard work and being in love and having a passion for what you do. If anyone is modeling for those reasons, then they will not become successful and should not call themselves a model. Models tend to think: "I am fabulous already and I am going to be discovered and become a star" but in reality, the chances of that happening are very slim. Nothing is handed to you. You must have a love for what you do first, then try to make it into a career and then you will be successful.
3. Models need to understand the term, "I am my own Tool." For example a Farmer will not go out to work knowing that his tools are not sharpened or are falling apart. Or that the seeds he has for planting is rotting. Models need to take pride in taking care of themselves, take care of your skin, personal hygiene, physical health and body structure. Maintain your model bag. Have proper shoes, make up, undergarments etc. WHO ARE YOUR TOP 3 MODELS? 1. Naomi Campbell – because of her dedication to the industry and for her consistency and longevity. 2. I like to compare Kate Moss to myself because of the barriers that she broke. Like me, she was not the required height of the average model, she was discovered and noticed because of her extraordinary features and today is known as one of the top models in the world. 3. Candice Swanepoel. I love Candice because of her elegance, grace and timeless beauty on the runway and in front the camera. She is sensual, yet edgy. She has a very
positive attitude and one of the best bodies I have seen on a model internationally. She is also the face of one of my favourite brands in the world, Victoria Secret.
ARRANGE THESE 3 THINGS IN ORDER OF THEIR IMPORTANCE TO YOU: MONEY, FAMILY, FITNESS. 1. FAMILY. I would not be where I am today if it was not for the loving support of my family. My mother Mrs Rosemaire Cudjoe is my Rock and my best friend. 2. MONEY. Money is a necessity in order to survive. 3. Fitness. Fitness is something that I can still accomplish without money. I have the discipline to work out on my own and stay fit. NAME 3 THINGS THAT YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT THE LOCAL FASHION INDUSTRY 1. The local fashion industry blatantly does not give models the respect that we deserve. We are still treated as though we are at the bottom of the list and that should not be. At a fashion show or an event that requires models or a photo shoot (and this happens all the time) the DJ is paid, the venue is paid for, the tickets are printed and paid for, even the event company that is hired to do décor and build ramps is paid for, so why is it that the models – the most important thing that makes the show – are the last to get paid? I have never seen at a fashion show or a shoot the designers put the clothing on a rack and push it down the runway.
ity of work just to save money. For example, I have studied a little bit of law, but will anyone choose me to represent them in court just to save money and not employ a professional Lawyer, no they won’t. 3. I will like to see more unity among the designers and with everyone that has a role in the development in the fashion industry. I have heard and seen too much bickering, jealousy and persons or groups unwillingly don’t want to collaborate because everyone wants glory. If Trinidad and Tobago is to become the Fashion Capital of the Caribbean, everyone that plays a part in the fashion industry needs to work together.
WHAT ARE 3 BENEFITS BEING A MODEL HAS AFFORDED YOU? Modeling has given me the opportunity to Travel and work in some of the most beautiful countries in the world. I have done Ad Campaigns in Mexico for the Italian brand Campari. I have travelled throughout the Caribbean and work with major clients in South Africa and Panama and most recently the United States of America Washington DC. Modeling has also allowed me to explore one of my greatest passions… Pageantry. Pageants have given me the opportunity to be 2. IN DE PAINT DANCE
our greatest pastimes. Well promoter extraordinaire Jules and his Caesar’s Army hosted their annual In De Paint Dance to facilitate just that and it was a roaring success. They really engaged patrons by making it a jouvert-styled event where National pride was reflected via the use of red and black paint with white powder. It made for several photo-worthy moments and a party that will go down as one of the year’s best.

AQUA SPLASH 2014
rinidad and Tobago’s entertainT ment landscape is forever evolving. These days there are all sorts of
events catering to a variety of age groups and social classes. The school vacation period we so graciously call ‘Summer’ has encouraged the usual barrage of water-themed parties. One such shindig was held at the Aqua Splash Park at the Hasely Crawford stadium. A young downtown crowd emerged for the festivities which featured a performance from Swappi the attendees would be sure to remember. ET&T was there for the inside scoop.

WHEN IT BECOMES TOO MUCH
he problem with fashion a lot of the time is people often come correct, but feel as though something is lacking which T causes them to go further and throw things out of whack. Your entire outfit does not have to be yellow. You can just wear a yellow top with some yellow shoes and achieve balance, but some might try to get orange, pants, belt, rag, hat and accessories, leading them to look like a giant canary in the end. The issue of overdoing is all too common when it comes to accessories. One necklace or ring might work, but still some go for the Mr. T look. Look sir, Baron and Sugar Aloes you are not. You did not have to put on all the jewelry you owned on your hand at once. Furthermore, gold accessories need not be worn with this particular outfit. It could have been toned down a bit to match your clothing choice.
It is obvious from this photo that she loves gold jewelry. Did she have to wear her entire jewelry box? We don’t know, maybe she fears her gold is not safe at home. While gold is an expensive accessory. Her use of it actually cheapens the outfit.

CELEB PROFILE
CASSIE
Name: Cassandra Elizabeth Ventura Age: 28 (August 26, 1986) Profession: Model, Singer, Actress. Claim to Fame: New London Connecticut native Cassie Ventura trained as a vocalist and dancer during her adolescent years before graduating from high school to pursue a modeling career in 2004. She was very successful having appeared in Seventeen Maga-
zine when she was sixteen years old, represented by Wilhelmina Models. She also modeled for Calvin Klein One and has featured in magazines including GQ and Bust and she became the face of ASOS 2013 spring collection. Cassie has also appeared in adverts for Delia's, Adidas, Abercrombie & Fitch and a commercial for Clean and Clear. Ventura is known for being a style icon due to her "edgy style" and "feminine" and "sophisticated" fashion. In fact, she is known as the celebrity who started the female hair shaving trend. Despite that, she would sing every chance she got and she got her big break when she met producer Ryan Leslie who signed her to his Next-Selection media music company. Leslie wrote and produced her first single “Me & U” which became a major hit in 2006. The track featured on her well-received, self-titled first al-
bum. She followed up that album with her second album RockaByeBaby which was produced under her off and on boyfriend Puffy’s Bad Boy label. Though the record did not amass super sales, it was one of the most critically acclaimed releases of the year. Modeling and music isn’t where it ends. In 2008 Cassie made her film debut as Sophie

Dumb and Dumber To Harry and Lloyd are back with some much anticipated Farrelly Brothers helmed fun. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as perennial blockheads in a show with true blockbuster potential. The film is set 20 years after the dimwits set out on their first adventure. In it, they head out in search of one of their long lost children in the hope of gaining a new kidney.
Ouija The first film will make you laugh, but soon there will be scares when Ouija is released. In Ouija, a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. Stiles White directs the supernatural thriller that is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Purge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) alongside Blumhouse Productions' Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series), Bennett Schneir (Battleship) and Hasbro.
