NEW BANDS ON THE CARNIVAL LANDSCAPE
014 was a radical year for the Greatest Show on Earth, with legendary mas man Brian McFarlane opting to sit it out. Also, in the aftermath of Parade of the Bands results, allegations of nontransparency in judging led to preaction protocol letters being filed against the NCBA by Rosalind Gabriel and Trini Revellers. Nevertheless, a number of new bands emerged to cement their place and gain a slice of the Carnival pie. But are these new bands going to make a worthwhile contribution to the landscape? Currently, the trend has been “less for more,” which involves increasing prices and giving masqueraders less. A contributor on Trinidad Carnival Diary reports that across the board the cheapest backline costume is $4200. This excludes a larger headpiece, collar and leg pieces. Many frontline costumes that average in excess of $7000 are what backline costumes were a few years ago, except for a different headpiece. The reduced quality of mass produced costumes is also an issue as “mas man” Brian Macfarlane states that “I know for a fact that you can land, in bulk, a costume from China, bikini and beads at $300 (TT).” But the demand for costumes seems to be inelastic as the majority of top bands claimed to be “sold out” soon after band launches. One band that has tried to change the status quo and give “more for much less” is Mardi Gras, The Ultimate VIP Street Party. Launched in 2014 in the large band category, it was created by a group of friends who decided that costume prices were too exorbitant. For TT$1000, you get a basic costume (decorated bikini for the ladies, shorts for the men), Monday wear (t-shirt), food, drinks, music and security for the two days. This is an excellent concept, for those who just want a fun time on the road. But how did they fare the first year

on the road? Pictures and reviews rave that masqueraders got more than their money’s worth, a fun filled two days on the road with “nice people having a nice time.” FLIRT Carnival also launched in 2014 as a small Carnival Masquerade band with their presentation of La Isla De Calor, giving people “more for less.” In their first year they got excellent
reviews, achieving their goal of “reviving the essence of a True Trini masquerade, complete with incomparable fun,” with beautiful costumes at economical prices. One masquerader reviewed via Facebook that it was the “BESS Carnival experience everrr!!! Complete organization, bess drinks, lovely ppl and excellent service!” www.amgtt.com •
There are other bands that are trying a different strategy, giving masqueraders “more for more.” One such band that has been wildly successful in giving quality for money is Paparazzi Carnival, truly where the Red Carpet Meets the Road. Launched for Carnival 2013, masqueraders claim that nothing bad can be said about this band that boasts of top local and foreign-based DJs, designer costumes, top quality food and premium drinks, efficient collection and customer service. Another is Passion Carnival, launched in 2014. Spokesperson for the band Sheena Tang Nian states “We all appreciate a wellorganized event and know how to have a great time…our focus is on ensuring our masqueraders experience a fun-filled, stress-free party-time, in beautifully designed and meticulously produced costumes that they love.” With Carnival 2015 a mere 6 months away, NCBA Chairman David Lopez states there is a development strategy plan for Carnival until 2017. So Carnival 2015 is off to a great start with all of its stakeholders already at work to make the festival surpass all preceding years. Emerging new bands can only be an added benefit to masqueraders, giving greatest choice in getting maximum vibes for their hard earned money. SEPTEMBER, 2014 • ET&T

RAWLE PERMANAND SHARES INSIGHT ON KEYS TO DESIGN
e often get excited about Carnival costumes, making mention of their beauty and fit, but we hardly ever focus on the designers behind the beloved styles. Rawle Permanand is definitely one designer you should take notice of. The costume design veteran has worked with some of the country’s biggest bands including YUMA, Island People and Passion locally while he has taken his talents and our culture abroad to Toronto’s Caribana and New York’s Labor Day. ET&T caught up with the creative wizard who shared some insight on his career moves and the keys to successful designs. Permanand said that great design is not only about style, but functionality (especially for Carnival). “I try to make sure masqueraders are comfortable and the costumes last for the entire Monday and Tuesday on the road.”
Rawle Permand and Avionne Mark
Rawle said another major key to design is understanding clientele. “You have to know who you are designing for. Each band will have different clientele. I try to focus on being practical, while providing the right colour composition and the other facets for road readiness.” Permanand designed two sections for Passion’s Neverland theme this year (Neverbird and Crocodile). He revealed that he had to turn down a lot of work on the local market to facilitate his foreign endeavours. However, he plans to rebuild his local clientele next year while also forging a path into the Jamaican and Bajan Carnival markets. He already revealed that he will be designing for YUMA in 2016. Oddly enough, Rawle does not design everyday clothing but strictly Carnival designs and Monday Wear. He says he will soon be leaving Monday Wear design behind to focus solely on costumes.
RONNIE MC INTOSH SPEAKS ON WINNING FORMULA D
e River Come Down! Most of you may remember that this was the name of the section that claimed the 2014 Downtown Large band of the year title. However the real question is what does it take to earn such achievement? Speaking with Ronnie Mc Intosh, one of the co owners of the mas band Ronnie and Caro, he admitted that while creativity is a must within the industry, customer service is definitely an important facet for the success of any Carnival band. He further admitted that the achievement was truly an honour for the band since it is fairly new to the category and the victory was also for the people who enjoyed themselves in the various sections of

the band, adding he was particularly impressed with the discipline his members showed in staying in their respective sections while crossing the main judging points. The band is going on their eighth year in existence, though the first five years they spent in the medium category.
As part of their creative process, the bandleaders always try to create names in which Trinidadians either living here or visiting the island to celebrate in the festivities can resonate with it. The desire to create a mas band of their own stemmed from Caro’s interaction and experience as a masquerader in the past. Mc Intosh stated, “every year Caro would add stuff to her costumes and eventually her friends began asking her to do the same to theirs.” Eventually this creative flair turned into a business initiative. So what can masqueraders expect in 2015 from this mas band? Ah Come Back Home! Check out the website for further information: http://www.ronnieandcaro.com/about.html

eauty and Brains – that is what can be said about the newly crowed Miss Universe T&T 2014, Jevon King. The 24 year old's dream of representing her country finally came through when she was crowned Miss Universe T&T on August 10th at Hilton Trinidad and Conference Center, defeating 11 other delegates. Entering the pageant has always been a dream of hers as she admitted to watching Wendy Fitzwilliam winning the 1998 pageant and telling her mother “I promise one day that I will bring you home that crown.” However each year King would postpone it until finally with the insistence of her mother and motivation from a stranger, she finally made the

decision to enter this year’s competition. Though she admits preparations for the pageant were not only unexpected but also rigorous and involved a lot of training, she was indeed grateful for the experience.
King’s response to the final question highlighted her values and beliefs and ideally sealed the deal with the judges. The final question King was asked was what message she would want to give to teenage girls who are engaging in public fights and using profanities? A poised King responded: “Violence is never the answer. Instead focus your energy on education and pursuing your dreams.” Talk about class! Franchise holder and CEO of mas band Tribe, Dean Ackin, hosted the Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe show. Some other winners of the competition included, Cheleste Peterson who won the Tribe Spirit of Carnival Award and Shaunika Firth who took the Treseme Fan Favourite
Award. Needless to say, the candidates debuted the Tribe Carnival band Monday mas wear designed by Rhion Romany. The candidates wore swimwear designed by Bikini Cabana and J Madison and Charu Lochan Dass provided evening gowns. King’s future plans include opening a Spa. She also encourages the youth of T&T to have a purpose and be more focused. Her final piece of advice to them was “set a dream, set a goal and work towards it.” ET&T congratulates Miss Jevon King on winning the Miss TT Universe 2014 title. We wish her great success as she moves on to represent T&T on the international stage!
LINEUP OF SHORT AND MEDIUM-LENGTH FILMS FOR 2014 FILM FESTIVAL REVEALED
T
he short and medium-length films that will screen at this year’s trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) have been announced. This is traditionally the largest section of the annual ttff’s lineup, and 2014 is no exception. Sixty-eight short and medium-length films—all from the Caribbean—will be shown at the ttff/14, which runs from September 16–30. The 68 films represent 18 countries in the Caribbean and the diaspora. Twenty-five of the films are from T&T or its diaspora. “Short films are often seen as the younger, less glamorous siblings of feature films. But to make a great short takes as much skill as a feature, and the best short films are no less enjoyable and memorable,” said Jonathan Ali, the ttff’s Editorial Director. “This year we have a diverse lineup of both fiction and documentary short films. Some have been 4

LOCAL T&T NOT THE TOP NEWS CARNIVAL IN THE WORLD?
n 2008, The National Geographic book Sacred Places of a Lifetime ranked T&T Carnival as the second best Pre-Lenten celebration in the world, surpassed only by New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. T&T was described as “Carnival the way it was meant to be: not a big, slick, commercial stadium show, but a party of the people—a spontaneous outpouring that plays out in flashy costumes, parades, dance shows, food festivals, and battle-of-thesteel-band competitions.” In 2012, Reuters stated that T&T Carnival ranks third in the world, beating Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro Carnival, but trailing New Orleans’ Mardi Gras again in the top spot and Belgium’s Carnival of Binche. Within recent times in the region, Barbados’ Cropover has grown and Grenada's Spice Mas seems to have become the place for the authentic J’ouvert experience. So where does T&T Carnival stand? Can we still lay claim to being the Greatest Show on Earth? Local and international masqueraders testify that T&T Carnival is still unrivalled for the following reasons. Media coverage and tourist volume: Rio de Janeiro Carnival and Mardi Gras are the top contenders because media coverage of T&T Carnival is almost non-existent, especially in North America. In addition, Rio De Janeiro Carnival has the greatest number of tourists, being a “highly organized, spectator friendly show that is watched by thousands of visitors.” For weeks, there is much planning to put on large-scale parades and festivities that feature samba schools and large groups of dancers and performers, who build spectacular floats and compete in one of seven divisions based on music, costumes and theme. The Carnival Prototype: T&T Carnival is obviously the 6
ing on the road in T&T.
Ooh La La Costumes: In recent years, T&T Carnival has been influenced by Rio de Janeiro Carnival, evidenced by more “bikini and beads” style costumes. However, the industry remains touched by legends like Peter Minshall who designed the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Traditional mas is still very much alive during J’ouvert and has influenced the costumes of talented designers like Brian Mac Farlane and K2K Carnival, for those who seek a “contemporary, edgy, fashion-forward product.”
It’s all about the Reveler: T&T Carnival stands out because it remains primarily about participation, there are no floats, and all costumes must be carried by the reveler. The focus is on the masquerader who purchases the costume, and not on the spectator. It's all about “playing mas”, being in the moment and living life, not sitting on the sidelines, watching it. Even if you choose to be a spectator, you can get right in amongst the revelers, enjoy the party vibes and take pictures!
Many people the world over don’t even know that T&T Carnival exists. T&T sits like an “unopened pearl” waiting to be discovered by millions, “women who would glory in the chance to get all-glammed-up for 2 days like a Las Vegas showgirl, men who would revel in the muted mayhem of J’ouvert celebrations; vacationers looking for a unique adventure, explorers who would be overjoyed to take part in what is unquestionably the World's greatest street party.”
Brian Macfarlane has long lamented the state of affairs
greatest because of the number of people that participate in our particular style of Carnival. Unlike the Rio De Janeiro Carnival and Mardi Gras, Trinidad style Carnival is the model for other Caribbean Carnivals including Jamaica and Barbados and has been introduced to major cities around the world including Miami, New York, Boston, Toronto and London and even Uganda. However, “T&T is to Caribbean style carnivals, what Paris is to fashion.” Many masqueraders note that while the parties may be good, nothing compares to be-

MODEL MANIA Name: Chrystal Wharwood Age: 21 Hometown: Barataria Hobbies: Playing Pan, Gym and Modeling Career: Student Goals: Graduate with Degree in Business Management This regular fixture as a model at Trinidad and Tobago’s biggest band launches is a definite headturner. Her amazingly fit, yet curvaceous body is often the envy of women and the object of desire for many a man. With three years modeling experience under her belt, the sexy Ms. Wharwood is looking to further her couturerelated career while preparing for
the job of her dreams later on. A list of popular and highly skilled lens men have digitally captured this beauty including Richard Munro, Nigel Reid, Gary Jordan and Kerron Riley. These images have not only made rounds on social media sites and magazines, but the beauty has also featured in advertisements for local brewing giants Carib and St. Lucia’s Vibes Beach Bar. Of course Chrystal could not truly call herself a model without having a particular penchant for style. Her favourite designer is Christian Boucaud, though she has the ability to rock almost any designer’s outfits, from chic to urban. Wharwood believes the key to exuding sex appeal is to be confident in your own skin and not imitate anyone. Her beauty regime consists of eating a lot of fruits and ensuring proper hydration, rest and exercise. These things place her in a good mood, but it’s not all gravy. Her pet peeves are double standards, dishonesty and irresponsible driving.

ET&T KEN MARLON CHARLES - KMC
HOT
K
one time let me kill all of them with lyrics.”
SEAT
en Marlon Charles is no stranger to the entertainment industry or to controversy. After announcing his departure from the Soca industry some three years ago, KMC released a Ragga Soca track titled “Thing” that shook and excited many music lovers and quite possibly pissed a few entertainers and radio personalities off. ET&T caught up with KMC who remains adamant that he never dissed Soca and says he remains focused on doing good music and pushing the creative envelope. “I never said I don’t like Soca, it’s the mentality I am talking about” was a statement that echoed in our minds during our conversation with Ken. We had a sit down and this is what he shared with us; ET&T: Does this mean that you are officially throwing your hat back into the Soca ring? KMC: “No Comment” ET&T: So…No comment means, possibly or is it that your mind is not made up? KMC: “No Comment on that one neither” ET&T: As far as the name calling, you know in the industry people are usually cautious about calling names but we have grown accustomed to you saying what is on your mind. Is there anything in particular that would have motivated you to call these specific names? KMC: “My motivation is the things that they were saying over the past 3 years when I was doing my recording and pursuing my international ventures. They used the power of their tongues to bash me and even add things that ain’t true and fed that to the public, putting people against me so my thing wouldn’t flourish the way it supposed to.” ET&T: Right we are following you… KMC: “Now this is a song I have a while now and it was just itching me and it ended up just being the right time to drop it. I didn’t really want to do it, but I realized that I am a man
ET&T: When you step on a stage in the foreign regions in front of massive crowds, what are the first thoughts that come to mind? KMC: “I was in awe.”
that has been pushing our music for years and after 16 years of pushing this music I feel very disrespected like if all them years went down the drain. Here I am with international opportunities and these same guys who going on the radio to try to make me a mockery now want to sing and can’t even do the thing properly and calling up my name all over the radio.” ET&T: What exactly is ‘Thing’ for the people who might be unclear? KMC: “If people cannot understand what I talking about in this thing then they have to be real mad in this thing because this thing is plain to see thing.”
war, KMC was trying to push peace and employ people to take Trinidad music to the billboards.” ET&T: Will there be another part to ‘Thing’ KMC: “I realize people like bacchanal, so take thing. I’ve been out in NYC pushing ‘Boombox.’ We’re being added to mainstream radio, but nobody has nothing to say about that. They hiding all the success and everything stupid they feed the public that. I have decided that if people don’t want to love what I am doing I am going to make them love to hate what I am doing. So hear what? Right now I reach a point where I really doh care.”
ET&T: So there was never an altercation? KMC: “No…I and all still don’t know what happened up to now. I think it is more envy. I am a man does just be in a corner doing my thing and sometimes I does just watch it as the devil busy and trying to come around me with stupidness.”
ET&T: People are under the impression that you are toting. Are you? KMC: “Hear what going on, let the people them think what they want. KMC don’t really care, let who think what they want. I know when I come live, I going and mash up everything. People must be feel I had time to be sitting down and crying? I does be performing in front of 300 000 people and thing, which one of them ever perform for so much people? My song in movies, but people talking bout I toting? Right now the thing nice. I let go a tune, it gone already, money running, my song ‘Boombox’ building in the international circuit and I am living nice.”
ET&T: Do you think that you have done something wrong that has led to the “fight down.” KMC: “I am the only Soca artiste that took 16 artistes and carry them in the studio and produce them out of my own pocket so I have always been trying to do good and create unity in the business. Even within the 3 years when everybody was bawling
ET&T: How would you feel if one of the guys you mentioned in ‘Thing’ decides to respond? KMC: “I am KMC, I am the clash master from a long time. That is a part of me and I am in a zone right now. I want one of them to answer because I so want to put it on them that I don’t even want one of them, I want about 10 of them on the stage
ET&T: So hear this, people would have heard a few years ago you had an issue or altercation with 5Star Akil. What exactly happened? KMC: “I never had no issue with none ah them boys, them boys had an issue with me.

ET&T: Did you ever feel depressed about the lack of support from your fellow countrymen? KMC: “Yeah, it isn’t the best feeling because I started to wonder who I was doing this for but I know that I have the backing of a minority. I have a passion for music and my passion is very deep that is why they really cannot get rid of me. It so deep that I live, breathe and think music.” ET&T: Name some of the places you have visited? KMC: “England, Sweden, Italy, Malmo, Morocco, LA and New York, among others” ET&T: Why do you think that so many people like ‘Thing’? KMC: “I got in the people them head, they remember that those were the same men ‘bunning’ me out. People does be saying…how is only one tune Jason and Blaze have, like them is one hit wonders oh what? I lie? That is what people thinking and that is how you write music, about reality. Yuh eh hear that Hypa Hoppa say that KMC is the master of story-telling? That is because no one does it like me? ET&T: Do you think that there is still space for you in the Soca arena? KMC: “I left the thing for 3 years and still nothing has changed. Nobody can’t take my space. I am KMC. You feel if they could have taken my space I would have still been the talk of the town? People like they was just waiting for me to drop a Soca and like I drop the right one.” ET&T: Anything else you want to add? KMC: “I just want the people to know that it is a musical thing, it is a love thing and we don’t worry about nothing. All them haters, they are important to the thing and we don’t bother bout them thing and all them who showing love, respect to them thing. When KMC reach on the stage he’s going to bun out all them boys them for three years of dissing the thing and I doing it smiling not toting.” SEPTEMBER, 2014 • ET&T 17

The band hosted its event at the scenic O2 Park and the cooler inclusive experience was one to remember. For a full gallery of photos, visit our website at www.amgtt.com. YUMA PRESENTS REIGN
EVENTS EXTRA n Saturday 9th August, YUMA showed us why they 'REIGN' "O as the popstars of T&T Carnival.
With a stunning, concert type show, YUMA's presentation was displayed amongst LED lights and motorized screens. It must be said, we think this has been one of the best collection we've seen all season. Their presentation left patrons eager to sign up. Carnival 2015 cannot come fast enough. It's safe to say the band stays true to its name: YOUNG, UPWARDLY, MOBILE and ADULT!"

APPEAL DENIED
rinidad and Tobago is full of characters. They don’t need T an excuse to make a spectacle of themselves and using fashion to accomplish this is one of the most common ways
they do it. When these offenders act out we make it our duty to get them off the streets pronto. However, they often try to appeal and question our authority on the matter. 99 percent of the time, their appeals get DENIED!
The guy on the left is actually one of the best dressed people at the event. However, his friend on the right stole all of his mojo and threw it away. People are wearing ties with almost anything these days, but this is absolutely ridiculous. He actually had to pin his tie on to his jersey to wear it. We gave him 10 years for forcing fashion.
Second from left in the photo, the girl in the yellow shoes is proving herself another power-pon-neck offender. Slightly to the reader's right is another offender, who seems to have come straight from Alaska considering she is rocking a fur top with boots. They were both arrested at The Best of Both World’s event.

MOVIES
FRIGHT FLICKS ARE COMING T
&T tends to have a love affair with Horror movies. As afraid as we become from watching them, we just can’t seem to get enough of the action. Here are two new films to look out for. We bet you won’t be watching them alone. Dracula Untold Think you’ve seen enough vampire movies? Well Hollywood doesn’t. Once again they will be revisiting one of the most famous fictional stories of all time. Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6,
Immortals) stars in Dracula Untold, the origin story of the man who became Dracula. Gary Shore directs and Michael De Luca produces the epic actionadventure.
Annabelle There isn’t much information about the soon to be released fright flick just yet. However, the producers want you to know what to expect with a simple tag line that reads “Before the Conjuring, there was Annabelle.” It was enough to give us a tingle.

His psychologist also determined that he suffered with bipolar disorder and depression. Williams was found unresponsive in his California home at around 11:55 PDT on August 11 and was pronounced dead at 12:02. The Coroner Division of Marin County suspected the death to be suicide by asphyxia, pending a forensic examination and toxicology test.
