S

oca has often been described as ‘happy’ music … the fusion of the lyrics and the beats inspire euphoria. That’s exactly what Lyrikal’s most popular 2015 release is able to accomplish whether one is intoxicated or not. Radio DJs and soca aficionados have all dubbed the track “Cloud 9” an entirely ‘feel good’ song. The artiste, with a penchant for infectious hooklines is gradually cementing his name into the Soca music Hall of Fame with 5 other groovy offerings thus far: “Dey In It”, “We have It”, “Whole Day,” “Loner” and “Untamed” with 5 Star Akil… “It’s been great so far. The people are really responding and receiving the songs ... I just thank God… I work hard and hard work pays off.” Additionally he is set to take advantage of an apparent industry agenda to revive the power soca category by releasing his own ‘power’, a song which was written by Shaft and produced by MillBeatz.

The New York based artiste who expects to have a hectic season boasts of being mentally prepared for the pace given that 2 years ago the heavyweight track “25/8” led him to perform 81 shows and last year alone he did 109 shows for the season. While he cited physi-

cal workouts, vitamins and the rest as also being key enablers, he noted that “Once I have that mic and once the people have that energy they just give me that adrenaline ... sometimes we do all 10 shows a night and the 10th show is nothing like the 1st because of the energy from the people.” This year after Carnival we can expect his first album and in a week’s time we can behold the much anticipated video release for “Cloud 9” which was shot in Miami by Ronnie Homer and Troublesum… “My goal this year is to really stamp my name… so there

would be no more doubt for people to say if yuh could come with a song? If yuh could come solid every year? So I just wanna stamp it and performancewise and entertainment-wise just bring that energy to the stage … I think it’s a great moment to do it with Cloud 9...” That’s right Lyrikal! It is a great moment and we are loving the experience of flying with you on Cloud 9 for CK15!

JAIGA BACK IN POWER MODE L

ast year, the world was introduced to JAIGA, the evolution of a brand, concept and entertainer as he realized new beginnings personally and professionally. While some found it difficult to detach from the brands "TC" "Jigga" and "Superjigga TC" they had come to grow and love over the years, for the most part, it was a successful transition. As time progressed, people accepted it and realized it is the same friendly, jolly and creative entertainer simply rebranded. Now, with Carnival 2015 officially in the mix, Jaiga remains committed to playing his part with musical offerings and entertainment during the short season. On November 8th 2014, he released his Soca Story. This was on the Moja Lov riddim produced by 1st Klase Records and Ground Empire Artiste, Revelation. It is

very sound instrumentally mixed by Neel Dwala and guitars by Kiwan Landreth-Smith. Lyrically matched by Revelation and Jaiga TC in a collaborative effort as the concept and story line depicts an elder asking Jaiga why does he sing soca, being a seasoned radio announcer, making it even harder for upcoming youths. Jaiga replies the very true story that soca just won't leave him alone, it keeps calling his name and it is in his blood and veins. This release

has been well received with much airplay and positive reviews. Then on Friday 5th December the plot thickened when Jaiga released “Liquor”, a catalyst to the Soca Story and a prelude to the much anticipated follow up single “Officer” which dropped on Monday 8th December, 2014. Liquor was produced by Akeem 'Preedy' Chance and Anson Soverall, music producer - Forward Movement Music Group (FMMG), Hitlab studio and

member of Team Rosa. The song signified Jaiga’s first Power Soca release in over four (4) years and it actually tied back into his previous releases as the song finds the artiste attempting to explain to the officer what the Soca and Liquor does to him. Apart from these top three in the mix, you can look forward to several other releases, some new and some recorded this year but held until the right time. Management states that the bookings have already begun rolling in as they prepare for a jam-packed Carnival 2015. Music and bookings aside, you can also look forward to new concepts between Stag and their endorsees under the new brand management of Shehann Caruth, so look forward for more activity between the brands Jaiga and STAG- A Man’s Beer.

f one ever questions the future of soca music one only needs to do some actual research and the musical archives of Erphaan Alves will be discovered. At just 23, Erphaan has been steadily building momentum, adopting a fresh, innovative and intelligent approach to the art form. The clothing line -EA- a growing element of his

tends to grow and develop. He has already co-produced “Push It Back” for Tim Tim with Nutation Records. This year we can also expect a mixtape, as well as a calypso entitled “Generation Gap” from the busy artiste who is aiming to make it to the Power and Groovy Soca Monarch finals as well as at least the Calypso monarch semifinals. He can be seen performing his calypso at the Kaiso Caravan Calypso Tent. Erphaan admits that aside from competition, his main aim is to build his fan base and he continues to be inspired by them. He is also immensely inspired by the recent achievements of veterans in the business “Seeing Bunji win a Soul Train Music Award and MTV Iggy Artiste of the Year and then Machel winning an award actu-

ally added fuel to my fire and reassured me that the hope is there for me and other younger artistes … there are opportunities for us that exist even though the soca circuit is small in comparison to other genres out there … once we keep on pressing on and investing in our craft we could experience success in the future.” So while you are literally wondering whey all dem woman come from? PRO MUA SHARES CARNIVAL TIPS

BRIDGET POUCHET SHARES MAKEUP ADVICE FOR THE ROAD, THE FETES AND MORE! T he saying 'if you love what you do you, you will never work a day in your life' most certainly applies to businesswoman Bridget Pouchet. This former Banker and Flight Attendant who also designs and produces carnival costumes, has now risen to be one of Trinidad's premiere makeup artists. ET&T caught up with Pouchet who was kind enough to share some of her professional makeup tips for the Carnival season.

Carnival Tips Beautiful long lasting makeup is the goal Primer which is the base before the makeup is important. For oily skin I apply Milk of Magnesia with a sponge followed by my favorite primer which is Laura Mercier oil free Primer. I had a bride once who wrote me a thank you card saying she jumped in a pool in her dress and her 2

The artist also shared a half dozen of her favourite brands. The six top brands that MUA Bridget Pouchet uses and highly recommends are: makeup stayed in place. I never used waterproof on her and I think the Primer and setting of the makeup made it last. Lashes are a must and glitter and gems for those who like the bling. A proper setting spray is important…. my favorite is SkindiNavia. All Inclusive I would say my style is not super natural nor is it over the top -

just simple pretty makeup - but I believe Carnival time is a time to have fun and be expressive so an all-inclusive is a great time to look glamorous. You can put the pop of colour on the eyes or on the lip and once again eyelashes are a must. Highlighted cheeks add extra dimension to the face but be careful about shimmery highlights as they can give an oily appearance. Mac skin finishes do some nice subtle highlighters.

STADIC STUDIOS CEMENTS PLACE IN SOCA RAZE PRODUCER SPEAKS ON CAREER GROWTH, VERSATILITY AND MORE!!

“V

ersatile” is the word that best describes Kevin “KC” Charles. As the figurehead of Stadic Studio Productions, he has been responsible for laying the backdrops for an array of diverse tracks from the region’s biggest names in entertainment. The Asylum family, Lava Man, Busy Signal, Machel Montano and more have collaborated with the producer in the last year alone with almost all of the big names in the Soca industry as well as some up and comers having worked with him in his three years as a producer. This begs the question: How did he manage to accomplish so much in only three years? Charles believes it was his God sent natural talent that spoke for him. However, he proved that he can definitely speak a good game having delivered the Valedictory

Kevin "KC" Charles

speech for his graduating class at UWI. He is also currently pursuing post graduate studies in Organic Chemistry (no doubt a far cry from his music related work). Charles says he was originally a dancer but had problems finding the right music to dance to. As a result he started toying around with beat production

software Logic in order to create new soundscapes for his routines. Eventually he became quite adept at the craft and before long he had to make a choice between dance and music. At the time he resided in St. Vincent and he soon became the go-to man for beats on the island. He took things to the next level when he

made the popular Oil Stain riddim. After which, he moved to T&T to fully immerse himself in the culture and sound. Charles reveals that his genre of choice is R&B/Pop. However, his soca prowess cannot be denied. He was able to successfully bridge the two on Fay Ann Lyon’s monster hit Raze. Bunji’s Bad Mind and the Bitter Riddim are among his other notable releases this year he made with frequent collaborator Wetty Beats. KC is looking forward to getting more involved in songwriting and working with new artistes. He believes he can achieve his goals comfortably as one of the Asylum’s in-house producers under the new Ground Empire. If you want to get more info on Stadic you can follow him on twitter@stadicmusic, Instagram @kevincharles or like Stadicstudios on facebook.

CELEBRITY BARBER WORKS ON CHANGING THE GROOMING GAME

T

here has long been a taboo surrounding male grooming in Trinidad and Tobago and much of the world. Ironically, a man who is too “well-manicured” is likely to be frowned upon by society as he is viewed as less manly for being well-kept. However, Leron Graham and his crew at Corporate Cutz are hoping to eradicate any such stigma as well as other misconceptions about barbering with a whole new slant on the craft. Described as a haven where progressive gentlemen can relax and experience the art of grooming, the establishment on Level 4 Long Circular Mall has developed quite a following over the last four years. Celebrities and entrepreneurs such as Dwayne Bravo, Trevlyn Lezama, Adrian Scoon and even female celebs such as Denise Belfon, LaShaun Prescott and Dancing Jade have all left as satisfied customers. However, Graham insists that his shop is not only for ‘big shots.’ 4

“We market to the young entrepreneur and upwardly mobile person, but we cater to everyone including kids. A lot of barbers don’t work on young children.” Graham also says that the prices are also affordable enough for the average guy looking for a full grooming experience. Leron stresses that his team

ET&T • JANUARY, 2015 • www.amgtt.com

does not merely give haircuts, but grooming services and consultancy as well. He offers advice to clients who are experiencing varying hair and scalp issues and he even does facial massages and minor procedures such as ingrown hair removal. What really sets his brand apart is the way Corporate Cutz

is marketed. It is probably the only barber shop with such a strong social media presence and #barbershopbanter is one of the most popular and engaging hashtags around. Graham believes that the barbering profession is often viewed as a hustle as opposed to a business and his initiatives seek to change that view. Soon he will be launching Task Force Tuesdays where any serviceman can come in and have a cut done at half price. He also has other marketing plans which he hopes to share soon once the back end work is completed. In the meantime, customers can continue to enjoy premium cuts from Leron as well as Neil and Jaques in the midst of nice, clean ambiance with amenities such as Wi-Fi and top notch digital entertainment in the salon. You can look for Corporate Cutz on Facebook or instagram @corporatecutz to keep abreast of their work.

hef Jason Peru is surely bubbling something but this time it doesn’t involve a pot! For Carnival 2015, Peru has decided to throw his creative energy into the Chutney Soca ring. The song which is called “Bubble with me” can be heard on his YouTube channel and many of the popular radio stations, if you have not done so already. When asked what inspired him to create a Chutney Soca song he replied, “This song came out of my passion for chutney/soca music—a passion I have nurtured from an early age. It is my favourite genre of music, and I always had the desire to compose a song that reflects that passion. This, however, in no way diminishes my appreciation for the other genres of the calypso art form. My father is an avid calypso enthusiast, so I have been exposed to all forms of calypso music during my

growing years.” In order to start the process, Peru sought the guidance of 2014 Chutney Soca Monarch winner KI Persad of JMC 3 Veni, songwriter Kelvin Kissoon, and Rishi Mahato from Maha Studio. Although many of you may already know, Peru is no stranger to the limelight. In 2008, Peru was offered

an exclusive contract from The Imagine Media Company and Ezone Entertainment Ltd to be the Ultimax TV Chef and was signed to his own Television Cooking and Entertainment show in 2008. Thereafter in July 2013, Peru became the first local chef to be endorsed by bmobile with the first season of the cooking pro-

Recently the festival was named one of the 25 coolest film festivals in the world by Movie Maker, an American magazine dedicated to the art and business of cinema. “In addition to providing a boost to the local film industry, the ttff serves to redefine the identity of Trinidad and Tobago as a hub for film making and festivals,” said Mario Romany, Industry Specialist - Business Development Directorate, Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment and Communications. He continued, “Both local and foreign participation at this event has grown steadily over the years which translates into an increase of its annual contribution to the economy from revenue generated.” 6

Mr Romany noted that the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment and Communications (MTIIC) has partnered with the ttff in an effort to use the Festival as a tool to encourage further growth and development of the film industry. “The commendation received from Movie Maker is an indication that the local film industry through this event has begun to make significant inroads throughout the international film world.” A panel of seven judges comprising international film indus-

He admits although he is a bit nervous, he is still very excited. “Within the past few weeks of releasing the song I adopted a new level of bravery and thus making me a more confident person.” His personal belief is “anything you want in life, be brave and go for it.” We would like to take this time to wish Jason the best of luck in the season ahead.

Bruce Paddington, Founder and Festival Director, ttff, said, “We are very proud to be named one of the 25 coolest film festivals in the world. We not only love film, but are determined to develop the film industry across the region and put Caribbean cinema on the world map.” The Movie Maker accolade comes as the ttff gets set to celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2015. This project is being made possible with the financial contribution of the European Union (European Development Fund) and the assistance of the ACP Group of States.

The British-born musician is quoted as saying about the move, “I am happy to speak out in favour of decriminalisation and I salute Drop Leaf as a proud participant in the movement and struggle to make this natural super plant available for all who need it and its healing properties.” Drop Leaf is currently working with DNA Genetics; conducting research and development

NINJA MAN SET FOR APRIL 2015 TRIAL DATE IN MURDER CASE The ongoing murder case involving legendary deejay, Ninja Man has been put off again, with the entertainer now set to stand trial next April. The case, which stems from an alleged incident in March 2009, was heard in the Home Circuit Court in Kingston Monday morning. Ninja Man, whose real name is Desmond Ballantine, is jointly charged along with his son, Janiel Ballantine and two other men for the

WORLD NEWS When someone guessed Dr. Luke, Geragos replied "#bingo." Representatives for Luke and Gaga both denied Geragos' claims in statements to TMZ. "Mark Geragos' statement is completely false and defamatory. Luke met Lady Gaga twice for less than half an hour total in those two meetings combined," Dr. Luke's rep said, "He has never been alone with her and never touched her. Neither meeting was in that time frame reported." Gaga hasn't named the man who assaulted her, but she says it wasn't Dr. Luke. Her rep confirmed Geragos's allegations are "absolutely not true."

KESHA'S LAWYER: DR. LUKE WAS THE PRODUCER WHO RAPED LADY GAGA Mark Geragos, the lawyer representing Kesha in her sexual assault claim against super-producer Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, claimed on Twitter that Luke was also the record producer who raped Lady Gaga when she was 19. Gaga told the story of the attack and how it affected her on the Howard Stern Show. After the news of that alleged assault broke, Geragos invited his Twitter followers to "guess who the rapist was" and "#namethepervert." 8

shooting death of Richard Johnson in the Mall Road area of Kingston on March 16 of that year. A date of April 13, 2015 was set for the trial’s commencement. Having been before the courts for over five years, Queen’s Counsel, K.D. Knight applied to have the matter adjourned this past April on the grounds that Ninja Man’s constitutional rights have been violated due to the length of time it has taken to try the case. However, said application was refused by the presiding judge, Justice Lloyd Hibbert, saying that the Home Circuit Court was not proper forum for an application seeking constitutional redress to be heard.

But Geragos is sticking to his guns. He hasn't deleted his tweets, and claims "I said it because it's true."

here’s more to Fya Empress than her 2012 hit Rum Please. Born Lornette Nedd in St. Vincent, the entertainer has lived in Tobago for the last 15 years and has emerged as a real force in the calypso/soca arena. With numerous titles under her belt including the current Tobago Calypso Queen we can expect more big things from the versatile artiste. ET&T: Benjai said Soca gives him his powers. What empowers you on a daily basis? Fya: (Laughs) Music does the same thing for me. Soca keeps me alive. It reminds me of the true essence of the Caribbean. ET&T: Speaking of true essence, your music generally has that authentic soca vibe while other artistes have gravitated to Techno/ EDM crossover tracks. Do you like the direction soca music is taking now? Fya: Times are changing and we have to embrace the changes around us. I still love the iron, pan and traditional sound. I won’t back away from doing the EDM type of soca, but I will definitely always stay true to my sound. ET&T: What’s your biggest career achievement to date? Fya: That would have to be 2012. I won a treble of titles in St. Vincent that year – The Road March, Groovy Monarch and Calypso Monarch - I also placed second in the Soca Monarch. Plus I was the Trinidad & Tobago Calypso Queen and was awarded Best Female Soca Artiste at the ISA’s. That was a big year for me and every year I just try to build on those successes. ET&T:

ET&T: Which adjectives best describe you? Fya: Straight-forward, Down-toearth and Determined.

ET&T: People look at the glamour of being an entertainer, but what’s the hardest thing about your job? Fya: Keeping the fans happy. Times and people change so you have to work hard to please them. The Synergy Soca Star alum has continued his performance career with some notable releases of his own such as this year’s ‘Wining Champion’ and ‘Blame It’. However, he has also forged a name as a formidable song-writing force having written tunes for Machel Montano and others. Above all, he is a young father and family man who handles his paternity with pride. ET&T caught up with the multifaceted individual for an interview. ET&T: Which appeals to you more a preedy face or a preedy waist (body)? Preedy: Even though physical features hold little value to me, but I would have to say face. The fact is, if she has a "Preedy" face and a not so nice body we could work on that with gym, squats, and other stuff. ET&T: Which do you think do better… songwriting or performing? Preedy: At the moment I am a better writer only because of my confidence when writing. However, I am a very strong performer and getting stronger with every performance. The basic structure for me is the intro, chorus, 1st verse, pre-chorus; chorus, repetitive hook and then you have your 2nd verse, hooks, bridge, hooks and outro. ET&T: We’ve always heard stories of behind the scenes bacchanal and bitchiness among artistes. Have you ever encountered anything of the sort that made you take a step back? Preedy: This is simple. Everyone wants a "hit" until it's time to pay for it. That's when the bag of tricks is brought out. One thing I

have learnt as a writer is that most artistes look at paying a writer as an expense rather than an investment. Sad, but true. ET&T: Do you think everyone who makes music is given a fair chance on radio? Preedy: No they are not. If a big artiste releases a questionable song most of the time they say it will grow on you, so it's played until you know the song word for word. On the other hand, if a new artiste does the same it is simply labeled as "sh*t" and left to rot and most songs don't make it past the email blast. The only way to counteract this is to be consistent and keep on releasing music, because even the big artistes started off small and worked their way up. ET&T: What is the one thing you would change about our entertainment industry if you had the authority? Preedy: I would push it on an international scale. Not just one or 2 artistes, but the whole industry. Next to oil the soca industry can be one of Trinidad's most profitable exports. ET&T: What can we expect from Preedy in 2015? Preedy: Well I've already written

ET&T: Have groupies ever threatened your personal relationships? Preedy: The little that I was fortunate to have might have done a little damage, but that was a serious learning period in my life. At this point I am more mature and fully equipped to deal with such a problem. ET&T: Your hometown (Maloney) is often typecast as a bad place. What is your message for people of similar backgrounds to overcome the negativity? Preedy: There are good people living in Maloney and it is a really wonderful place to live. For a small community we have been blessed we many socially stimulating facilities all of which are in constant use. I am proud of where I'm from. Those that look down at Maloney in reality have skewed values which might not be much in the first place. ET&T: Closing comments. Preedy: All I want to do is make good music. Few will know me and fewer will know my story. What you should know is that my passion for music burns hotter than the molten inferno of the earth’s core (Lyrics Preedy lol). So whatever I do expect nothing less than 100% because nothing less than 100% shall be given. #wemad

FAKE FRIENDS

here is nothing like a good friend to keep you in check when you are goT ing astray. If you are dressing like a clown, a good friend would tell you not to wear it and save you the embarrassment. The not-so-good friends are likely to sit back and watch you make an ill-advised fashion decision. The results can be worse than consuming hot Supligen and cold doubles before boarding a Port-of-Spain to San Fernando bus.

So you decided to attend a sporting event in the tropics in a pair of winter boots (Uggs to be exact). That’s a crying shame. The sad thing is, while you are doing that, your friend is happy and smiling and styling.
