R
odell ‘Ro’dey’ Cumberbatch is riding an unparalleled wave of success built on social media fame. His comedic skits and the characters he portrays within them are household names among Trinidad and Tobago’s new generation X. The Fatima college alum recently made his way onto urban radio as a morning show host and is a popular fixture at events and even has a standup show. ET&T caught up with the rising star for an interview on his catchphrases, dealing with criticism and more. Ro’dey admits that being funny wasn’t his motive when he first started doing videos. He said it was
born out of issues he had in past relationships with females that left him bitter. One relationship in particular led to catharsis. “I was in one relationship where I completely lost myself. I had to pull away from it and when I pulled away I started reading a lot more and I became more humble and understanding to people’s feelings. I just wanted to share my experiences and help people in their relationships whether it is with their mom, their dad, their spouse and so on,” he said. He added that getting people to laugh while doing it is a plus. While he claims to be unintentionally funny he did have his
views on the content produced by the rest of the local comedic circuit. “I think we limit ourselves. I don’t think Trinidadians on the whole realize how funny we are,” he said before paying homage to a local great. “I watched a lot of Learie Joseph and those guys. I think Learie Joseph is a genius. I just think that we can take it up a notch. There are currently no avenues for young comedians coming up if they want to do standup or even produce a comedy movie in T&T” It isn’t easy being a comedian in Trinidad. The public is way harsher on them than politicians and criminals. With that said, we
asked Cumberbatch how he dealt with the criticism that comes with his newfound fame. “Some people just want to talk and some people give constructive criticism. People just talk so the attention could share in their direction. I’m not about that. I’m just about making people laugh and that’s it.” It’s no secret that his catchphrases have caught on big time. People all around Trinidad have been using his “Whydoingit” slang so we asked him about the origin of it. ”When I first started doing videos there was no ‘whydoingit.’ It was on lesson number 9 when the question was “why do ladies shave off their eyebrows to draw it back on?” When I did the video I kept asking why… why… why yuh doing it? People started commenting why yuh doing it, why yuh doing it. I just dropped the “yuh” to make it unique and whydoingit was born.” Ro’dey spoke a little about his new role on radio and intimated that he is blessed to be around some of the people he always looked up to like Nikki Cosby and Jaiga. He said that things are going well and he is proud of the move he and his team made. As far as new projects in store, Rodell says he has a YouTube channel on the way. Those craving more of him and the various characters he portrays will be able to see consistent and extended coverage of him there.

RISING STAR CORINNE BROWNE Corinne Browne
“T
o me being an actress is easy because I was born into it” … This is the reflection of bona fide member of Trinidad and Tobago’s new generation of actresses Corinne Browne. Browne, whose both parents were heavily involved in Best Village, started her journey into acting some 20 years ago when her unscripted, convincing portrayal of an obeah woman in her D’Abadie church youth group moved an audience member to encourage her to pursue acting professionally. Her compliance resulted in the establishment of her acting career and her participation in a string of plays which include her most memorable play to date, ‘Pardon Me Prime Minister’ along with ‘Run For Yuh Wife’, ‘Woman Is Boss’, ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ and ‘Men Are Dogs’ which earned her a cacique nomination for best actress. She recalls though that her first major professional theatre production was a Necessary Arts production called ‘Romeo
and Juliet in D Pan Yard’ which was written by Naima Thompson and directed by Thompson and Penelope Spencer, “...that play was challenging because there and then I had to learn about stage left and stage right...how to project my voice and articulate...not to turn my back to the audience.... how to be on time with my cues etc... so that play was not only a fun experience but a learning one as well...” Attributing her general selfconfidence to her mom, Corinne admits to feeling quite comfortable on stage, “the best part of being on stage is when you enjoy
yourself...meaning being comfortable with your lines, understanding your character and making the audience laugh out loud...it’s a really nice feeling.” However she notes that some aspects of the stage can be quite scary or challenging, such as the need to remember lines and cues precisely as failure to do so can have a negative domino effect on the other actors and ultimately the entire production, “don’t let anybody tell you that it’s easy to prepare for a play. It’s not... because not only do you have to remember your lines and your blocking but you have to remember your fellow actors’ lines and their blocking as well...so in case
they forget, you would be right there to help them … so that's why when I work ...I work together as a team and I don’t try to upstage myself for laughs...” Her advice to young persons interested in acting is to “know that it takes time to achieve your goals... take your craft seriously... find acting classes to take...stay in shape and stay positive.” With over 10 plays to date on her acting resume, Corinne who identifies local industry heavyweights, Debra Boucaud Mason, Richard Ragoobarsingh and Penelope Spencer as her role models, aims to become the best local actress in Trinidad and Tobago in 5 years and would also relish the opportunity to do film in the future… “I’m aiming to be the best at what I do. I know that's ambitious but I need to get there... I need to deliver outstanding results.” If her commitment and passion toward her craft is to be taken as testament to her potential to bring these dreams to reality then Corinne Browne is literally one to watch!
ORLANDO OCTAVE READIES ALBUM RELEASE
T
rinidad and Tobago has some of the most fickle people on the planet. Whether it’s sports, entertainment, fashion or even politics, support will wane quickly by these so-called fans unless you are constantly in the mainstream. Many people put together good runs and then disappear in a land where legends and their legacies are seldom respected. However, there are some people who tend to possess enough charm and ability to constantly and consistently bounce back from quiet spells and captivate audiences. Orlando Octave is one such talent. We’ve seen the pint-sized star grow up with us over the years while delivering some standout songs and performances. However, the last couple years have seen him doing a lot of important overseas 2
networking including a BET 106& Park appearance. Now, the young star is back in Trinidad doing what he does best – making music. He teamed up with Peng CoMusic and such was the chemistry with the production house that they did an entire album together. The album is called Welcome

to Orlando and is tentatively carded for July release. It will feature Octave’s signature sing/chant style over a combination of electronic and live instrumentation. Orlando plans to have the release coincide with a local concert tour throughout rural Trinidad starting in his hometown of Rio Claro. His first
single Don’t Matter is doing well on itunes and the corresponding video has been getting great reviews on YouTube. He is also hyping a new track called Nocturnal which will be out soon. This seems fitting as his music is sure to rule nightclubs for some time to come. Apart from the new music, Orlando continues to push positivity to Trinbago’s youth via his MAYANS collective. The soubriquet stands for Mature Ambitious Youth Against Negativity and the entertainer and his team are working assiduously to impact on the public whether through music or their actions. There’s a lot more to come from Orlando as he has a slew of charity events lined up as well. ET&T will be on top of it as it unfolds to keep you updated.

GOLDA LEE BRUCE WINS BATTLE OF ANCHORS IN ONLINE POLL
n a recent ET&T social media poll, the top three news anchors from the major local networks were pitted against each other and fans were asked to choose a favourite. Desha Rambhajan, Golda Lee Bruce and Samantha John were at the will of the internet for a day and maybe as a surprise to some Golda Lee walked away victorious. We caught up with Golda who was both happy and surprised at the result. “It’s always good to know that you are being appreciated and that people like the job you do and they like your style. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that I’m doing my job well and that it impacts people,” said a smiling Golda.
Golda Lee Bruce has all the qualities required to be an exceptional anchor. She is intelligent and articulate, plus she has the outward beauty and inner glow that makes people connect more easily with her. However, the
competition she faced were not walkovers. Samantha John and Desha Rambhajan are both consummate professionals and very easy on the eyes as well. Golda was quick to lavish praises on her counterparts. “Both Desha and Sammy Jo are good friends of mine and they have their own way of going about the job that we do. While they have their own style, theirs is equally as good” said the CNC3 star in the humblest of fashions. When cheekily asked if she felt this poll could act as a reason for her boss to give her a raise, Golda went on to state that while she would welcome one, her supportive work environment means more to her than
money. She said, her previous employers did a lot to attack her confidence, but now she feels a lot more comfortable. She also added that her coworkers both on air and in the newsroom aide her in doing her job to the best of her ability as they treat her like family. A bit off the topic Golda took a moment to touch on motherhood. She said the experience is “A thousand times better” than she would have ever imagined. She says the experience is so profound that it feels as though her life has only just begun. We at ET&T wish her all the best in her career and family life as she moves from stride to stride.

Both the workshops and the conference are open for anyone who has an interest in beauty culture, with Carter assuring that there’s something planned, for everyone. AT SPLASH OF ORANGE 3
EVENTS
he majority of patrons at this event came wearing a bit more than a splash of orange. This colourthemed party which took place at Piarco Village Suites is growing into one of the must-go events for mature fete-lovers. A variety of tasty food and drinks were consumed by attendees and dancing continued throughout even when rain showers threatened to spoil the fun. The people present showed their true propensity for partying and ET&T was there to capture it. For more, see our Facebook page.

n ET&T magazine wouldn’t A be complete without the addition of photos from a boatride.
There are just so many of them and when you are in the business of events coverage, you go wherever the action is – whether land or sea. This particular event took place aboard the Point Loma and was put together by Dynasty Family in collaboration with Ladybug promotions. There was a decent vibe at the event even though the boat was not packed to capacity. In fact, the extra space seemed to work in the party’s favour as people swayed the night away in style.

birthday bash of Abstract Media Group H.N.I.C Anthony “Glam God” Gomez and for all intents and purposes it was one to remember. Specially invited guests donned white by request while they partook of the finest premium spirits and gourmet cutters from shrimp cocktails to sushi. The DJ’s provided a well-balanced mix of music for those who came out to support. A brief rain interruption did little to stop the vibes. Here’s a peek at the action.

GET IT TOGETHER GUYS
he majority of crimes committed daily are T by men. However, FP statistics show that women are the major offenders when it comes to fashion law. This does not mean that we don’t get our fair share of trouble from the dudes. Case in point…
Do we really have to tell a grown man like you to pull your pants up. Then again, pulling your pants up won’t help since there is no belt to keep it up.
We won’t focus on the fact that the brand of the jeans is outdated. We don’t have to wear trendy clothing to be fashionable. However, those Enyce jeans are way oversized. It’s obvious that he bought them back in the 90’s when they were relevant. The problem is, back then oversized jeans were the “it” thing. Sigh!

CELEB PROFILE
STEPHEN CURRY
Name: Wardell Stephen "Steph" Curry II Age: 27 (March 14, 1988) Career: Professional basketball player Claim to Fame: Stephen Curry did not have the easiest way into the NBA despite having a former NBA player for a father. He did not receive any college basketball offers from major conference schools due to his size so he chose to attend Davidson. He led Davidson University to the Elite 8 in the
NCAA tournament as a sophomore in 2008 and soon ended up on everyone’s radar. After being drafted he immediately made an impact by making the Golden State Warriors a competitive team again. He decimated defenses alongside fellow sharpshooter Klay Thompson and the pair became known as the "Splash Brothers" for their dominant outside shooting. This year, the star point guard was named NBA MVP after leading the Golden State Warriors to the league's best record in 2015. He set the NBA record for most three-pointers made in a season with 286 during his MVP campaign. His run extended all the way to the NBA finals where he battled Lebron James for the Larry Obrien trophy and was victorious as the Golden State Warriors pulled off a 105-97 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 6 to become the NBA Champs for the first time in 40 years.
