SEVERAL STARS TO HIT LOCAL SHORES AS CONCERTS

REGAIN POPULARITY

fter a relative dearth of toplevel international concert type events in T&T, the country is experiencing somewhat of a resurgence as we near the end of 2015. There have been sporadic visits by a variety of foreign stars throughout the year with Young Thug, Beres Hammond, Alkaline and others visiting, but now it’s time to up the ante. This quarter is carded to be the biggest concert period we’ve had – since the year Beyonce hit our shores – outside of the Tobago Jazz period. Things kick off with Cure Family’s 5th year event-hosting celebration simply entitled Cure. The event takes place at O2 Park on September 27th. It features the legendary Jah Cure in concert in what is touted to be an unplugged and uncut performance. A strict dress code is in effect where patrons are asked to wear white or tribal clothing. The following week sees things step up a few notches. Several dancehall legends will take to the stage for what can be considered to be the biggest conglomeration of

regional superstars to hit one stage in Trinidad in decades. The emperor of dancehall, Shabba Ranks will be live in Trinidad alongside Maxi Priest, Barrington Levy, Chaka De-

mus and Pliers, Tanya Stephens, Mad Cobra and T&T’s own Iwer George for the Unplugged Concert Experience. It goes down on Saturday October 3rd 2015 at the National Stadium Trinidad. While that is possibly the biggest concert in terms of joint star power to hit our shores, the concert that has arguably been generating the most buzz takes place on October 31st. The Hennessy Artistry series continues with Reggae Royalty Damian Jr. Gong Marley as the star attraction. The event, which is

MEILING INC. USHERS IN GLOBAL EXPANSION VIA WWW.LIVEINM.COM M eiling Inc., in joint venture with Live in M, a new Canada-based online retailer, has taken the first steps toward expanding its signature, high quality services beyond T&T’s shores by way of a global online retail service. Live in M is an online retail community that is opening up opportunities for niche designers seeking direct interaction with fashion customers in USA and Canada. Its business strategy is one that promotes shopping offthe-beaten-path to discover original, authentic and high-quality fashion collections by niche designers from all over the world. “We often feel alone in our choices. But we are not as alone as we might think. Live in M means Live in “Me” – Live in the Moment, and endorses the customer’s right to make

unique fashion choices in any facet of her life. The live in M online social community makes it easier than ever for customers to share the choices they stand by - not only in their lives but in style choices of their living environment.” The brand hosted a 'soft launch' opening of its online store front on September 16th which featured specially invited industry guests and members of the media. The front store features signature pieces from Caribbean designers. The idea was birthed out of an overwhelming demand for the brand overseas. In a 2014 survey, 100% of Meiling Inc. customers who live and work in the US and Canada said they would buy the brand online if they could not visit Trinidad to purchase and en-

thusiastically support an official, exclusive, international online retail platform and distribution service where they could access the brand they love. Earlier this year, Rue La La, (www.ruelala.com) a select, membership-based online and mobile retail platform with over 800,000 followers on social media and 14 million global members, invited Meiling Inc. to partner and provide carefully chosen iconic fashion items to be featured in its prestigious online retail community. Meiling Inc. is the first and only Caribbean designer to ever be hand-picked for a space on the site. The T&T fashion label was featured on Rue La La for a limited time only - between (9th to 15th September 2015).

SKIPE RIDDIM BUZZING ON THE AIRWAVES SWAPPI, SPINE, TERRI LYONS AND OTHERS SPEAK ON THEIR

CONTRIBUTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS MOVING FORWARD

P

roducer of the riddim Mr. Spine told ET&T that the inspiration behind putting the riddim together was a need to try and satisfy a void for basement styled soca dancehall. “There is an appreciation for bashment soca especially among female party-goers and masqueraders so I wanted to do a project especially for them,” he said. Spine went on to state that he selected those particular artistes for the riddim because he finds they fit the mould for that particular genre best. “They all fit that style I was looking to create, which is that soca dancehall/soca bashment style and I think they did a good job.” Marvin Davis a.k.a. Swappi quickly rose to prominence with similar musical backdrops helping to propel his unique style. Despite enduring a relatively quiet last few years considering his bright start, Swappi was a nobrainer to feature on the riddim. His song, Center, is classic Swappi and features all the necessary elements to keep clubs jumping from now till Carnival is fully in swing. Swappi noted that he had fun working on the riddim with Spine and it translated into a song which is getting positive feedback from fans and radio alike. He also gave some insight into what to expect as we head into the 2016 Carnival season. “Expect a lot of new moves… new movements, new image, new look, new sound, new management team, new everything…” he said before adding “I’m also working on a movie as we speak. So 2016 is going to be huge. It’s a short season, but it can be a huge one as well.” After a quiet period post her baby’s birth Terri Lyons is back as well. She teamed up with SANTANA the puppet for a humorous song entitled Work which sees both artistes go back and forth on the riddim in their signature styles. Lyons told ET&T she is con2

fident in her offering on the riddim as she never releases tracks she is not comfortable with. Terri says there has always been good synergy among herself, Spine and Zigboi as they have collaborated on a few occasions before. She admits that the experience working with a puppet is a different one, but one she embraces wholeheartedly. As for the season ahead, Terri says the Skipe riddim is merely the first of many other projects lying in wait. She rattled off a list of top level producers she has worked

with so far and says she is more determined than ever as she has a son to take care of. Brand new artiste Palos has been enjoying the love he has received so far with his song Bubblers getting strong rotation on air. His name has been heard for quite a while on the underground circuit and his contribution to the Skipe riddim may provide the impetus needed to catapult him to the next level. Conversely, the remaining two acts on the riddim need no introduction. Reigning groovy

soca monarch Olatunji is maintaining his strong radio presence with consistent releases. His tune on the riddim – entitled Bang Bang – has immediately received support from fans and DJ’s alike. Grenadian soca star Mr. Killa also worked on the Skipe riddim. However, he is holding back his tune for a later release. ET&T was promised that fans can anticipate something special from him when the song drops. Look out for updates on each of the artistes featured here in future editions of ET&T.

head of Carnival 2016 in Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucian singer and song-writer Teddyson John has unleashed his groovy Soca contender entitled ‘Allez’ which has already been gaining attention by Soca fans due to its catchy melodious lyrics and danceable instrumentation. Allez which translates from French to mean 'get up and go' encourages listeners to release all negativity, live in the moment and not allow anyone or anything to stand in the way of their happiness, a sentiment shared by the global feting population during the Carnival season. LOCAL THE LONGEST WAIT MOVIE NEWS FILMS CROSS-COUNTRY

T

his month, from July 4th to 26th 2015, the movie crew of ‘The Longest Wait’ will be shooting dramatic film scenes from the Toco Lighthouse, to the highest point of San Fernando hill, Down the Islands at Gasparee off the western coast and also at Clifton Hill Manor, Point Fortin. The film follows Pearce Ryker, a love-seeker whose life changes when a mysterious woman starts sending him messages over the Internet. She is beautiful, with the sweetest personality and a captivating sensuality, which draws him swiftly into a deep and passionate online relationship. This is love, Pearce is convinced of it! They soon meet, but after a perfect beginning, that dream soon turns into a nightmare, with many twists and turns. Dramatic scenes from the movie will incorporate live action, stunt work as well as a few shooting days on a green-screen set location. Production Manager Leslie-

Ann Wills-Caton, explained that there was a clear intention for the film to showcase diverse locations across Trinidad. "A lot of times films in Trinidad only focus on the north and we wanted to expose the south, central and other local landscapes. We will be shooting in Point Fortin, Claxton Bay, the quaint village of Mayo just outside Gasparillo and other far reaching places to show the beauty of Trinidad that exists 'past the lighthouse'."

According to first-time film director Dimitri Scheult, the choice of filming in 'the south-land' has specific significance. "Point Fortin and these locations are only looked at for their oil and industry, so because people do not know about them they have become almost exotic locations in my country. There is so much more that these places have to offer if only people would take the time to appreciate them, and we hope to do that through this film." Executive Producer and script writer of the film, Mrs. Beverly Singh confirmed that the choice of a variety of locations matched the requirements of the action in the script and the unfolding of the tension and comedy of the storyline. "Diverse locations were strategic on my part," said Singh. "I was so fed up with the cliché Maracas beach - it's not the only beach we have, you know. So I tried to put the scenes in many diverse locations like the Toco light house, which is so iconic. I also wanted Clifton Hill Manor because

it is a little known but gorgeous beach and venue." Location sponsors were also invited to collaborate with the movie such as the management of Clifton Hill Manor in Point Fortin, the management of Amnesia Night Club in Chaguanas, and the Airports Authority in Piarco. "Very special thanks go to Mr. Bobby Marajh of Transport Solutions Limited for the use of his location and transport services,” confirmed Wills-Caton. “Additional thanks go to Mr. Julien King of the Central Athletic Club in Chaguanas, along with A.S. Bryden for their kind support." The Longest Wait will be managed by FIXERfilm Limited, a production company based here in Trinidad. The film crew comprises both Canadian and Trinbagonian crew members in a collaboration between Film Students of the Vancouver Film School, the University of the West Indies and film professionals as mentors who are giving back to the film community.

BLACK RYNO WANTS TO TERMINATE JA PRODUCTIONS CONTRACT Dancehall artist, Black Ryno reportedly wants out of his contract with acclaimed Jamaican record label, JA Productions, but not without his much anticipated album being released, according to the label’s main man and esteemed producer, Justus Arison. Word recently broke that Ryno told Arison he wanted out of his four-year deal with JA Productions, saying that he was growing wary of the music business. Ryno only signed that deal last year. As a result of that, Arison has not taken bookings for the singjay for the last four months.

In a press release, Arison explained the issue, mentioning that despite Ryno expressing his desire to leave the music business for a while, he is currently signed to another label, leading to tension between both parties. According to Arison, Ryno explained that he is still signed to Vybz Kartel’s Adidjaheim Records imprint, despite the fact he left Kartel’s Portmore Empire in 2010. This would make his JA Productions deal null and void. Though Ryno plans to leave the label, something that Arison said he is willing to let happen. Arison insists Ryno’s 14-track studio album; Better Tomorrow will be released under his imprint within the next 30 days.

wenty-eight year old soca starlet Jadel Legere is keen on making her vocal ability; natural beauty and passion for music propel her into full-blown stardom. The Arouca born, Petit Valley resident is a hard worker, with an uncharacteristically warm personality for someone who has already been exposed to four years in the biz. ET&T caught up with her in the midst of her hectic C2K16 preparations to catch up as well as shed some insight into the upcoming season.

ET&T: Why pursue a career in music? Jadel: I have been active from a young age... I played keyboards, was part of church and school choirs... took part in music festivals, concerts, functions and more, albeit in genres that are not soca.

ET&T: What projects do you have in store for the upcoming C2K16 season? Jadel: Some groovy soca songs… Riddims… One fast paced and a chutney soca. Won’t let out more than that at the moment. ET&T: What has been your defining moment thus far and what changes have you made in order to improve on that success? Jadel: The year I had Keep Wining got me a lot of recognition. I was totally and actively involved in every aspect of artistry and the music industry. However, I’d say the first year in music when I join the bands Surface and Traffik was vital. It

ET&T: What is your creative process like when working on a song? Do you write your songs? Jadel: Yes i write... I just need a clean environment where I’m alone locked up. Melodies come and I voicenote them. When I’m ready for use, I just scroll and choose my favourites. Lyrics are the easiest part.

was new to me and I learned a lot. I’m very grateful for that because it prepared me to take the next step forward.

ET&T: You market a very sexy, sensual image. How important is sex appeal to marketing the Jadel brand? Jadel: There’s a saying “sex sells.” I’ve gotten that advice from all over, but age brings reason and experience brings wisdom. Yes I’ve always portrayed a sexual image, but I’ve surely learnt it accounts for a small percentage of what you project. It doesn’t beat bringing

16 ET&T • SEPTEMBER, 2015 • www.amgtt.com

forward a QUALITY song.. All the imaging and marketing won’t do well without charisma, a humble attitude and quality product. Notice I didn’t say “good” because to me there is no good or bad soca... and good or bad comes from what we individually perceive it to be. Marketing is just an asset...yes it helps, but there is surely a balance. One just has to be tactical and smart about it. Know when where and how to use it.

ET&T: What’s the best advice you ever got and who was it from? Jadel: Great advice I’ll say because

ET&T: What is the worst insult you ever heard from someone a critic? Jadel: (Laughs) The worse thing was “Music and singing isn’t for you... You’re gonna stay in the same place… You like the songs, but the good songs don’t like you. Give up on it all and go bury yourself after” (Lol). ET&T: Who is your favourite person in the industry to work with? Jadel: No favorites. Every producer, artiste, songwriter has their special part to play. Everyone is unique and brings his/her own different twist to the table. Me being appreciative of all styles, cultures and genres of music, I have full respect for each different contribution. So I don’t have a favourite. The only thing that can prevent me from wanting to work with someone is if they possess a totally unprofessional nature. ET&T: Where do you see yourself five years from now? Jadel: Opening a successful business, enjoying family life while also being successful academically and musically. ET&T: Do you have plans to drop any other genre of music in the future? Jadel: Others genres I’ll try, but I’ll do so outside of Trinidad if it has nothing to do with soca. Genres keep being altered, so who knows what new music Trinidad may bring forth? For now I’m a soca lover, but there’s no telling what God and the future may bring.

4 MAJOR MAKEUP MISTAKES FOR BIG OCCASIONS

BEAUTY

W

hen getting ready for special occasions, many women think the bigger the event, the bigger the makeup. Unfortunately, that usually results in women who look like Ronald McDonald, or a ghost who just came out of mime school. This is a definite no-no for your big day. It is important to get your makeup just right. In order to do so, there are some key mistakes to avoid. We hooked up with our beauty experts and got them to share their wealth of experience on what no woman should do when it comes to mega-event makeup.

1

Too Much makeup There’s no faster way to make yourself look like a clown than applying too much makeup. Even if it’s the right color, too much lipstick will make you look like your Great Tantie Doris, and it’s liable to end up all over the place – including your clothing – in a few minutes. Packing on the foundation might be good in construction, but on your face it will make you look faker than an orange hundred dollar bill. Makeup should not hide your ability to show your emotions. It isn’t botox. When it comes to mascara… less is definitely more.

2

Pre - Application Procedures. Many occasions are once-in-a lifetime events. Hence, people get tempted to do drastic procedures to change or enhance their appearance before the date. This mistake is one of the biggest mistakes so many people make. Avoid rushing out to get the extreme facial procedures like peelings, tans, teeth whitening, etcetera. The consequences could be harsh. Continue with your regular skincare procedures, but also try to have a healthy diet, exercise and get enough sleep. You don’t want to apply makeup to raw, peeling and sensitive skin.

3

Choosing Bold Trends Trendy makeup might be cool for that one-nighter with the friends to club Zen. However, your graduation, anniversary or wedding photos are going to end up in a family album some day and five years down the road you will want to watch them without being embarrassed. Don’t go for flashy colors that you might regret later on. And if you insist

on bold colors for your eye shadow, or have been wanting to wear fuchsia lipstick to your big day ever since you were 7, make sure that you choose one colorful makeup item, and have the rest be simple.

4

Wearing too little coverage Depending on your skin type, you will want more of a matte finish

for the oilier skins and a radiant finish for a drier skin. The most important part of photography is the finish to the skin. You want the face to look flawless. For instance, if under eye circles are not concealed properly, the eyes will get lost in the photo. We do appreciate the natural look, but big dates are not natural events and a tad more emphasis should be put on coverage than normal.

tive with their launches, the band got dramatic at O2 Park with an almost Broadway-like production. Bright splashes of colour with lots of feathers were the order of the night as far as costuming. The pieces were part of the unearthing of Pantheon (the band’s 2016 theme). Patrons took to wilding out and turning up like only IP can to the selection of great music on a magical night. Here are some photos.

EVENTS EXTRA

YUMA VIBE PRESENTS INDULGE P

opular mas band YUMA invited potential masqueraders to Indulge in their 2016 costume presentation party. The drinks inclusive event was held at the Hasley Crawford Stadium. Even though rain fell at intervals throughout the night, it did little to dampen the spirits of patrons. The actual costume presentation itself was not bad either. Hot models pranced around the stage to show off a host of colourful pieces, some of which elicited oohs and ahhs from the crowd.

Now, they are being worn at social settings – and we ain’t talking the beach – much to the surprise of several people. Yet, others find it acceptable. What do you think about this guy’s choice?

These pants would not have been acceptable in the past. Some are questioning if they are acceptable now. Let us know how you feel. Visit www. amgtt.com and hit us up.

EMBRACE THE INTENSITY S

of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down. Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson star in this Ron Howard adaptation.

ome movies are light and easy-going. Others – like the two featured here- are intense and harrowing. These films, coming soon to a theatre near you, are sure to have you on edge.

In The Heart of the Sea In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's

surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality
