JW & Blaze Switch to SLAM
he buzz was created since last December when one of the nation’s most popular radio duos teased that they would be finding a new home for 2014 on their official Facebook page. Well it has happened and amidst lots of speculation J.W (Jason Williams) and Blaze have officially begun their stint, on air at Slam 100.5 making the move from Red 96.7 on Monday 13th, 2014. ET&T spoke to some of the key players to get our readers the inside scoop. According to Jason Williams the move represented a collective effort from him and Blaze. They both felt that the time had come to embrace a new challenge in a new broadcasting environment. There were a range of urban radio stations to choose from, but Slam 100.5 stood out because they were always impressed with their programming as well as the vision and charisma of Signal to Noise whom Jason in particular had known since earlier in his career at 98.9 FM. Jason reminisced that he and Blaze had experienced some great years at Red 96.7 and took the op-
portunity to express gratitude to the people whom they had worked with at that station, emphasizing that they wish their past employers all the best. He also gave a special mention of gratitude to the ‘Bantons’, the loyal fans of their morning show during the Red years, many of whom continued to show their love and support for the duo even in the first few days on their new stage as evidenced during the call in segment of their new morning show. Former coworker and successor to the morning show at Red, Devon Matthews stated that change is good and expressed heartfelt best wishes to JW and Blaze on their
new journey. Devon who had often filled in for the pair when they were unable to work due to travelling obligations, stated that these past ‘training’ experiences would make the transition a bit easier for him though he acknowledged that their shoes would be difficult ones to fill. He even noted that he and the duo still have business ventures together including an upcoming bubble bath jouvert band which could now be promoted more widely. According to Devon, “The Red FM flag is still flying high.” Excited at the prospect of turning a new page and anticipating being a part of the broader goals and mission of SLAM, while still feeling

love from their colleagues and fans across the board, J.W noted, “The industry in Trinidad is small so there is no need to burn bridges … It’s just that the time had come for a change. These are exciting times.” Amidst all the change, we know that we can continue to look forward to the powerful mixture of laughs and social commentary that the pair brings to airwaves, sprinkled by their endearing personalities each morning and ET&T wishes them all the best.
Carnival Season Underway
Early bacchanal brews, but season promises to be strong C arnival has come back again and by all accounts it promises to be a bumper season (no pun intended). ET&T has its eyes on all the entertainment happenings this year and so far there are signs that the Carnival will indeed be epic. A look at the early fetes for the season will reflect these sentiments. Tribe Ice and Fantasy Secret Saturday attracted massive early season crowds. Those numbers are only expected to increase as the bacchanal hits full swing. Notably absent from the list of early Carnival events is Island People’s Yeah. However, fans of the band will welcome the return of the formerly popular Amnesia fete on February 1st. There have been increases in the prices of several staple Carnival events with some

cooler fete prices as high as $350, while Hyatt’s Lime and Lara’s all inclusive fetes are priced at $1775 and $1600 respectively. Carnival costume prices have also increased with basic frontline costumes $7000 and up on average, while backline pieces average at $4500. Yet, band leaders reveal costume sales have been doing exceedingly well this year with Ron-
nie McIntosh of Ronnie and Caro stating he completely sold out two of his sections as early as October 2013. No doubt, masqueraders will be looking forward to the road experience. However, there has been a recent uproar regarding a proposed parade route change. The NCBA proposed that bands cross the stage from west to east as opposed to the usual east to west format. Many bandleaders immediately voiced concerns about this saying the masqueraders would find it difficult to go against the wind. The international Soca Monarch will also witness some changes as perennial head, William Munroe has ceded his position to Media 21 head Peter Scoon. Also notably
Machel Montano started the season strongly
absent from Carnival proceedings is Brian Macfarlane whose last year as band leader was 2013. Feters and revelers alike will be excited about the amount of music being released. While a lot of the music thus far has been tame, some artistes such as Kerwin Dubois, Machel Montano and Destra have released strong offerings. Keep abreast with ET&T as we continue to cover Carnival. After all, D Ting Start.

Orlando Octaves Laments Lack of Fresh Concepts By Peers
The Artistes Also Touches On New Work and His Infamous KFC Freestyle
on’t let his diminutive features fool you. Orlando ‘Rude Boy’ Octave is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to entertainment on any level. Back in his homeland after an extended stay in the US, Octave wasted no time in getting back into the swing of things as he already released three songs for 2014 Carnival so far. The young star spoke exclusively with ET&T where he promised more to come and spoke out against artistes who constantly make music void of concepts. He even touched on the notoriety of his viral KFC freestyle video. Octave revealed that things have been moving swimmingly for him since his return and his releases have been doing well. “Keep It Moving has been received well. I also released the Don’t Stop single earlier and I just released a song on the School Bag Riddim. So far I am
in all the fetes because of it from Army to Battle of the Sexes to Ladies Night out and more…” said the artiste. In terms of upcoming releases Octave revealed he has something fairly different to unleash. “My next release is dedicated to people reaching home safe after an event. Too many times we take things for granted and I
just wanted to touch on a different perspective and keep things positive” he stated. Orlando went on to state that he wished more artistes would push themselves to create music with varying subject matter. “The lack of topics is killing soca. You could count the concepts people sing about on one hand for Carnival. You can sing the usual
stuff, but still try to incorporate a different message and words into your songs.” Speaking of being different, Octave sent social media ablaze when he released a video of him freestyling his order at a KFC drive through. Octave seemed genuinely surprised by the feedback the video got, but he was thankful all the same. “I never expected that to get so big. That was actually a dare. I was going home after a boat ride and my DJ dared me to do it so I did. He filmed it and the result is what you saw.” All in all, the entertainer is looking forward to a safe and productive carnival backed by his new Management team Charlo Music. In the wake of the current crime situation Octave urges fans to put God first and everything else will fall into place. Look out for new developments on Orlando and other local artistes on ET&T.

rilliant Trinidadian artist, musician, teacher, intellectual and visionary, the late Pat Bishop said it best when she said that ‘until all have crossed over …the river… none of us have crossed… and some we have to carry’ At a time when Trinidad and Tobago is violently struggling with issues of identity and self, ‘RIVER OF LIFE AND HOPE’ is a multipart mission where the river is used as an allegory in the creation of a year of art that includes over one hundred pastel paintings on rivers in Trinidad and Tobago to add to the moving canvas of 500 beautiful bodies in an adult Carnival mas band and 60 costumes in the children’s carnival; this, to help overcome this troubling period. For us, the river has always been a symbol of life and hope, of love and gathering, of solace and shelter, of strength and power, of calm and confidence, of individuality and commonality, of worship 2
and glory, of trials and tribulations, of beauty and magnificence, of struggle and sacrifice, of power and corruption, of cleansing and rebirth, of peace and patience, of diligence and success, of ritual and rebellion and of joy and celebration. In a collaborative effort with Adrenaline City and the Patrick Roberts Gallery, Image Nation will present for Carnival 2014

‘RIVER OF LIFE’ a complete all-inclusive mas experience for only TT$1250.00 which covers premium drinks, food, music and security. Full Carnival Monday and Tuesday costumes are free. As is the norm with Image Nation’s mas, ‘RIVER OF LIFE’ costumes were designed on the base of a traditional Trinidad Carnival costume; this time the ‘Madam
Martniquan’, which came to Trinidad when the French from the northern Caribbean used the conditions of the 1783 Cedula of Population to migrate to Trinidad and impact on Trinidad’s Carnival. In today’s Trinidad Carnival, the Kanboule/Canboulay is being brutally beaten and bullied by the Mardi Gras and the ‘Madam Martniquan’ costume is a perfect fit to speak to this burning issue. Moreover, the ‘Madam Martniquan’ is the style that influenced what has become commonly known as the washerwoman’s often seen at the river. ‘RIVER OF LIFE’ costumes are avant-garde, classy, dressy, show-offish, jametteish and churchy all rolled into one to chronicle this contestation for space in the modern Trinidad Carnival. nslem Douglas was one of the biggest names in Soca. His songs Ragga Poom Pom, Doggie and Stick Fight (When Ah Dead Bury Mih Clothes) are bona fide classics that led to him being a household name locally. Then, just like that, he disappeared from the mainstream soca circuit. This, Douglas attributes to a 20 year migration to Canada. During that time he ventured into Neo Soul and funk music territory. However, he is now back in his birthplace and he believes his best years as an artiste are still ahead of him. ET&T hooked up with Douglas to get the scoop on his new work and he also took time to speak on the need for more social responsibility by his artistic peers. So far Douglas has released a

collaborated effort which features Lil Bitts on the Classic 60’s Riddim. He said the opportunity for the song arose when he was still abroad. “I got a call from Millbeatz studio when I was in Toronto telling me about the riddim and the concept
where they pair up seasoned artistes with the young guns. I came down and recorded ‘I Want To Know’ and later Bitts added her part.” In terms of new releases he promised more to come while adding that he is currently concentrating on getting back into soca performing shape. “The voice and the writing are still there. I just need to work on my fitness. I’m not as young as I was” he said with a laugh. Additionally, Douglas took time to speak on crime saying he believes 200 percent that artistes need to do more to change the current landscape. “Whether it is artists or sports personalities I think anyone with a certain level of celebrity should do something positive to change things since people look up to them. Trinidad is going through a really dark period and instead of
waiting on a lightning bolt to change things we need to be proactive. When there was famine in Africa, artistes came together to do We are the World. We need to use or influence similarly. The first step is to go into the communities and reach out because many of these youths have no guidance so they need that figure to look up to,” he posited. Ultimately, Douglas believes that despite it all, Trinidad and Tobago is still a paradise and he is happy to be able to do music for the people. “If you are not singing for the people, its better you sing in your bathroom.” This entertainer is very in tune with the people as he often interacts with them via social media often allowing free music downloads. He also keeps people updated via his site www. anslemmusic.com.

Flipo now considers entering the International Groovy Soca Monarch for the first time; he accepts every new experience as a stepping stone for his bright future. He promises to have fun and bring to the stage his dynamics, giving an introduction of who he is within the Soca artform. Flipo began his musical journey at the age of fifteen (15), beating the desk at school, rapping and free styling with classmates. At that tender age he also taught himself to make beats via one of the most popular music production systems in the world Fruity Loops 3. Three (3) years later he found himself signing contracts as an artiste / producer to the first Hip – Hop Label in Trinidad & Tobago (PRO RECORDS) with his first Hip – Hop Single entitled “Another Murder”. The song was made due to the high murder rate in Trinidad and was released in 2007 on the television show

oon we will have ONE. BIG. BAD. STINK. TRUCK. on the road. Costume collection dates draw near and many of us have taken loans or saved painfully over the year for Carnival 2014. But are these high prices we pay for costumes really justified? Let’s look at the trends. Yearly, leading bands have been increasing prices and giving masqueraders less. Headpieces were replaced with tiaras, then arm/ leg pieces were no longer included. Trinidad Carnival Diary 2014 investigates that the cheapest backline costume without a large headpiece and arm/leg pieces is $4200. Many frontline costumes now average over $7000 and look very much like backline costumes a few years ago. A small band leader notes that costume building involves significant cost, especially if elaborate appliqués or pheasant feathers are used. However, this comes nowhere near to the exorbitant
High Prices No Scene For Masqueraders
prices charged by large bands that use mass produced costumes. Masqueraders often flood social media with complaints of color discrepancies and poor quality. In the Trinidad Guardian, “Mas man” Brian Macfarlane said “I know for a fact that you can land, in bulk, a costume from China, bikini and beads at $300 (TT).” A TRIBE representative points out that there are a number of expenses besides the costume, including export/import
fees, band fees and the cost of DJ, food, music and security. However, with the volume of masqueraders these costs still do not offset huge profit margins. New bands have entered the market with competitive prices for a complete, well-made costume with all perks on the road, including makeup artists at the rest stops, giving proof that the top bands are overcharging. Despite this, demand for costumes remains inelastic as top bands have claimed to be sold out soon after band launches. YUMA’s band manager stated that there was no change in the positive response of both local and foreign masqueraders as compared to previous years. For 2014 he noted there were a lot of new registrants as “everyone wants to be a part of the YUMA vibe.” A TRIBE representative confirmed an overwhelming demand for costumes, filled by loyal customers of TRIBE and BLISS first before
new persons are accommodated. So why pay $4500 for a bikini and a tiara? One YUMA masquerader says, “the experience is why I would pay the money, but I know very well the band is making real money off me.” The market suggests that bands are pricing appropriately for their product, with great success. It is not just the costume being sold but the 2 day revelry… the “vibes” that goes with a band, as well as the extras like different food options, massages at rest stops and air conditioned buses. A BLISS masquerader sums it up perfectly, “it's an experience like nothing else and I look forward to it every year. You spend the 6-8 months from band launch to carnival inspecting and scrutinizing pics of the costume and when you collect it you keep trying it on and looking at every little detail…but once you're on the road, all you need is for it to be comfortable and secure because you can wear any costume and feel like you lookin’ bess and ready to have a time.”

an ‘Bunji Garlin’ Alvarez possesses the lyrical aptitude and eloquence to leave any crowd in awe. This top soca lyricist’s rugged demeanour and long locks have been replaced with a trending Mohawk haircut and well-tailored somewhat metrosexual clothing. The initial revelation of Bunji’s reinvented image caused quite a stir. However, it immediately made him more palatable to T&T’s “high society” music lovers. This was also enhanced by his decision to become a family man by marrying fellow soca act Fay-Ann Lyons. No doubt, former manager Ian Pantin would have been instrumental to his growth as well. His method of releasing the information highlighted a new movement in his marketing strategy where social media is concerned as a means of keeping your audience involved and giving them a glimpse into your life.

Bunji also developed artistically. Raga Soca his foundation style of music, now blends other genres of music such as reggae, R&B and chutney. Bunji has collaborated with several artistes such as Fay-Ann Lyons, Kerwin Dubois, Denise Belfon, Ronnie Mcintosh, Patrice Roberts and Bounty Killer. He is in high demand throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. Recently he has experienced greater success for his hit song

‘Differentology’, which reached #2 on the iTunes international top singles download chart. This song generated collaboration with popular DJ Major Lazer and saw the inclusion of dance music into Bunji’s repertoire. The spiked pulsating rhythm of dance music mimics carnival with its international equivalent of a beach rave that is greatly appreciated on the international scene and its now infectious connection to soca is sure to make it a main stream staple at many of the international carnival styled type events. Bunji is an evolving artist and fearless as it relates to experimenting with music. His music has been known to offer a little rhythmic spice for each age grow but now he appears to be catering for all markets. The ability to stay current and relevant is what outlines a true international artist. Bunji is building his legacy with a polished image
and making quality music for two separate markets at the same time. His soca competitor, Machel, seems to be loosening his grip on the soca industry. While we still hold him dear in our hearts, only time will tell which artiste will really be able to further solidify soca’s status globally. In order to remain at the top Bunji must continue to create relevant music that represents who he is, an international artiste with a soca grassroot. The move to VP records was a strong career play as it presented him as an artiste with a solid vision for continuity and expansion. His sobriquet, Bunji Garlin is derived from the bungee cord which is flexible and the Garlin which is a type of gun with powerful shots. As the name suggests his recent musical strides would also attest to the same. He is a flexible artist that is willing to expand into new fields in the hope of creating even better music.

Without further ado, the following tips are from Leasel herself.
HOW TO CREATE THAT SUBTLE LOOK WITH YOUR FOUNDATION WITHOUT THE CAKEY FINISH When using foundation, a great idea is to always use a damp sponge or if you prefer to use a brush applicator, lightly spray with water
PROPER BLUSH APPLICATION Always apply your blush from the ear toward the apple of the cheek; then back to the ear, then forward again. This technique helps to create a light contour to the cheek and perfect distribution of the blush.
LIPCOLOR APPLICATION
then use the foundation of your choice. Finish with Translucent Loose powder and there, your canvas is ready for the next step… The Eye shadows and Lip color.
EYESHADOW APPLICATION Ensure that your eye shadows are blended well into each other. You should never see any distinction where colors meet. This helps to

create a natural finish to your Eye make-up.
MASCARA APPLICATION Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes in a quick left to right motion. Follow with another few sweeps of the wand. Apply to bottom lashes as well. Finish with a clean wand to remove any unwanted clumps.
Start with a very sharp lip liner, in the same color as your chosen lipstick. As you apply, smile a little so the lips are tight and the liner goes on easier. Be light on the hands as you apply your lip liner. Fill in the lips using the side of the liner then use your sponge and sweep the inner part of lips to soften and blend the lip liner. Apply your lipstick with a lip brush for precision. If you make a mistake, take a little concealer on a small brush and ‘erase’ it. If desired, finish with a lip gloss.

he ever sexy and bubbly Caryl ‘Trini’ Jacobs found herself in the midst of an ET&T interview and we are spilling the beans on what we uncovered in our Chit Chat. Enjoy! ET&T: If you could have your way, how would 2014 be different for you? Trini: If I could have my way, I would be on the top of all the international charts, Billboard charts, Reggae Charts, Soca Charts. I’d just be a super, mega star. ET&T: You favourite Soca song for the year so far is? Trini: There are two artistes who are just incredible and releasing great music right now. Kerwin Dubois and Bunji. I love Kerwin’s music, but because Bunji has had the longer run I’ll go with his songs. It’s between Red Light District and Truck on d Road. It’s something about those songs that I don’t even have to hear the lyrics… once it starts I’m wining. ET&T: What do you do to prepare in the minutes leading up to a performance? Trini: I think about my performance and how I’m going to give off positive energy. I feel out the audience and try to interact with them before. I don’t wonder about if the audience will like my music or any of that. I’m just thinking of how I can be the best I can be on stage. ET&T: The industry you are in is allegedly replete with drugs and other vices. Have you ever seen an artistic peer do drugs? Trini: Everybody likes their ‘lil’ weed here and there, but in terms of the harder drugs like cocaine and stuff I’ve never seen it. In any event I’m always in my own space and I stay to myself. ET&T: What is one thing
you would never do on stage? Trini: Strip down naked. I might be half naked, but I won’t completely strip down. ET&T: In light of the current crime situation locally, what message would you like to impart to your countrymen? Trini: I don’t know how hurt and angry the criminals are, but something is causing them to act in this way. I just want people to be grateful for what they have (no matter how little) and learn self-love. Love yourself and your neighbor. It may sound simple, but that’s how I live. ET&T: Do you workout? If so, what are your favourite and least
favourite exercises? Trini: I love intense cardio. I love running. I love P90X and Insanity. Oh and I loooove kickboxing. I don’t get to do it as much as I want, but I really love those workouts. I am very disciplined when it comes to working out, so I don’t really have an exercise I don’t like. I do whatever needs to be done. ET&T: A Lime ticket is $1775, a Lara ticket is $1600 and a Moka ticket is $2200. Patrons would have their views, but as an artiste, do you think fete prices are justified? Trini: I think Trinis are happy. Happy is the name of my next single by the way. Clearly, the sold out crowds are proof that the prices are not too high. I
personally would not pay $2200 for a fete. You know how much stuff I can buy with $2200? ET&T: Tell us about your upcoming single Happy. Trini: It was produced by Shadee out of St. Lucia. It is just about being happy and enjoying life. ET&T: Ever had a crush on another artiste? If so, do tell. Trini: I have (laughs). I wonder if I should say. Let’s just say I love me some Kes the Band. ET&T: Anything else to add? Trini: I want everyone to please drink responsibly. Be responsible and think about your actions. Tomorrow is promised to no one. Also, just live and love.

he festive period can be costly. Fete after fete and not to mention highly priced Carnival costumes can leave dents in your pockets that are deeper than the grooves in bass pans. As a result, people usually look for the cheapest clothing alternatives they can find to go feting. Moreover, Carnival is a time to celebrate a casual appearance since the parties are usually so crammed and hype anyway. With that said, we look at some of the men’s casual clothing you are likely to see in abundance this season.
This simple t-shirt and jeans works in any event once you have the Carnival body to pull it off
In case you didn’t know, denim tops are cool again. This look will work well in any carnival environment, once too much water isn’t involved
This look can get you from the rowdiest fete to an all-inclusive with ease thanks to a little colour coordination
This is the epitome of causal. This look can take you from home to a cooler fete and back and is no scene 16
This look screams Hip-Hop, but you and your crew can pull it off if you choose your fete wisely

Prophet Benjamin and told me thanks for saving his life. I asked him how I did that and he explained that he was at a show I performed at prior and he and some friends were leaving the show to have sex with a girl they met there. He said that he listened to my song Delilah and it resonated with him and he did not go with the guys. They went and ended up contracting HIV from her. As far as the soca, I want to take my music in a more positive direction as well, but I have to get to a certain level in that arena before I can start doing that or else my music would get lost in the season.
D
evon Prophet Benjamin Samuel initially made his mark as one of the pioneers of Trinidad and Tobago’s reggae resurgence with his massive hits “Field of Weed", "Delilah", "Pretty Boy,” "Coming from Moruga” and more at the forefront of the revolution. He then made an impressive transition into Soca and Chutney music with songs such as “Throw Wine” and “Lokani”. The artiste hooked up with ET&T for an interview where he spoke about his new music as well as the artiste peers he admires and the time his music saved a life.
ET&T: Are there any local artistes whose performances you really enjoy looking at? PB: I’d say Olatunji and Blaxx too.
ET&T: Straight out the gate… will you be competing again this year and what are your expectations? PB: Yes. I will be competing, but I don’t have any expectations for competition. I will just try my best every time.
ET&T: What about songs? Which 2014 selection strikes you the most? PB: Machel’s HMA (Happiest Man Alive)
ET&T: Do you write songs specifically for each season or do you have a song stash that you dip into? PB: I do have a stash, but I am always writing. I might hear a riddim and write to it, but I may not release it. I’ll end up using the song at another point. ET&T: What can you be found doing in the 30 minutes leading up to a performance? PB: Thirty minutes before is smoking weed time. (Laughs) I always take that time to reflect on where I came from. To know that people are waiting to see me and that a stage is built for me to express my views is just great. So I look back at where I came from and it helps me prepare. ET&T: How do you think the soca artform can be
improved? PB: I believe the topics can change to show something more positive. Also, the attitudes of artists to each other in the arena can be improved. ET&T: The crime situation in our country is terrible at the moment. Do you
think artistes have a role to play in reducing crime? PB: I think we do. That is why I also sing reggae music because the whole essence of reggae is an avenue for positive energy. I remember one time I was performing and this guy kept watching me. After the performance he approached me
ET&T: We’ve heard your early releases such as Seamstress and No Profit and they have been getting some airplay, do you plan to release any more tracks. I have a new one called Anger Management and something else in the pipeline that I’m not sure about releasing just yet. I don’t want to force it. ET&T: What’s the story behind Anger Management? PB: When I get mad I want to break things. (Laughs) ET&T: All the best for the New Year and I wish you continued success. PB: Thank you. To all of T&T thank you for the support as well as the good and bad comments. Continue to love God.

They sailed the night away to the strains of top-notch musical selections. We doubted that some of the people present would actually rock the high heels on a moving boat, but some did. Whether they dressed the part or not, patrons had reason to remember Stilettos.

ing a successful event idea. The concept of merging fun and fitness in a party-like atmosphere is growing. Recently, there was a similar event by the name of Caribbean Colour Splash which took place at Skinner’s Park, San Fernando. The event was a non-competitive paint race and fun run/walk where professionals and novice runners came together to enjoy the sport. Along the race route were several colour stations where participants were blasted with different colours of paint. It all ended with an after party. The promoters used the event to bring awareness to various types of Cancer and generally promote fitness. Here are some pics of the noble initiative.

Where They Do That At? I f you aren’t sure about something it is wise to stay away from it until you have got it figured out. It’s a piece of general advice, but it fully applies to fashion. ET&T’s Fashion Police were unfortunate enough to encounter several travesties at a retro-themed party at Zen. Several patrons decided to go for the vintage suspenders look, but failed horribly since they chose to wear belts with the suspenders. That is a no-no. The suspenders and belt serve the same purpose. Fashion has to be functional too. Sigh! We’ll give him credit for being able to attract two beautiful ladies despite his fashion faux pas. However, the belt and suspenders equal a fail in our book.
What are you so happy about? Some fashion criminals have no respect for the law or authority.
He wore the belt to match his suspenders and tie and balance his outfit. Yet, there mere choice of pairing the two was an imbalance enough.
We’ll forget about the missing tie pin that caused his tie to do whatever it so chose on the night since the focus is on his belt & suspenders combo. No sir… No
