HEAD OF PUBLICITY

Kasey Day ‘24

The Tempest is a participant in the California Educational Theatre Association High School Theatre Festival.

Letter from the Director:

Pop quiz: What about our production of THE TEMPEST would have been illegal in Shakespeare’s time?

If you said women and girls performing on stage you are correct!

It’s amazing how far society has come, and it makes me wonder what barriers will soon fall?

THE TEMPEST is a beautiful play full of flawed characters. There is a melancholy to it, as though the author knew it was his last.

The characters have to learn hard lessons, but it is a story of redemption, love, and the pursuit of freedom.

It’s a very musical play, and I am so proud of the work done by Isabelle Socorro Islas ‘23. Ever since frosh year, this student has produced amazing music for us! I can’t wait for you to hear this soundscape.

The student assistant directors have truly learned to plot a course and reach a destination. Catie Nickoli ‘23 and Kasey Day ‘24 have been amazing leaders and creators in this process, working with the choreography team to put together significant portions of the show.

My management team, led by Stage Manager Lora Frigerio ‘23 and Production Manager Maggie Holcomb ‘24, has done incredible work! Theatre at OLP is like running a small city, and I’m so grateful to all the folks who keep the trains on time.

The crew on our productions continue to be larger than our cast at OLP which is a detail in which I take pride. Department Heads are not the only ones who make it happen, but they are a unified force that compounds to amazing execution.

Enjoy the show!

PHASE II

In the fall of 2023, OLP’s productions will be presented on the 2,000 square-foot stage in the new Theater located in the future St. Therese Learning Center and Performing Arts Complex. It will serve as a multi-purpose and performance space custom designed to accommodate the thriving Performing Arts program. The 5,000 square-feet space will include a 700 square-foot lobby, theater seating for 1,000, set design workshop and storage, costume dressing room, sound booth, dance studio, and orchestra classroom. The Theater will be built in order to adapt to the student’s wide range of activities including cheer practice, and more through the utilization of retractable seats.

An OLP theater production takes a village. One hundred students are typically required to successfully produce the fall and spring plays, holding leadership roles as stage manager, nproduction manager, heads of costume, sound, lights, choreographers, original music composers, assistant directors, dance captains, fight captains, and more. Beyond the two major annual productions, the Theater will be utilized to host the one-act play festivals of students’ original works, improvisation performances, classwork, instrumental ensemble and chorus classes, the tech theater classes as well as hosting visiting artists and touring groups.

“It’s a magical, beautiful process. I get to see students make life-long friends by battling not against anything, but rather together with the common goal of creating beautiful, challenging, important art.”
