BUSCH GARDENS
HOWL-O-SCREAM Photos by Melissa W. Martino
B
usch Gardens Howl-O-Scream has returned on select nights through Oct 28, 7:30 - 1 a.m. From terrifying new houses and scare zones to creepers on coasters, an air of fear will consumes the park until there is nowhere to hide. New houses designed to terrify include: INSOMNIA - Every door in this haunted asylum leads to your worst nightmare and the doctor is accepting new patients. Fears turn into fate as victims are forced to stay awake and receive twisted treatments from demented doctors. SIMON’S SLAUGHTERHOUSE – By merely stepping inside, you have agreed to play Simon’s sick and twisted games. Entering this horrifying realm requires a journey through the Meat Market where cannibalistic creatures feast on the weak as they add to their Monster Menu of human hors d’oeuvres. Due to the intensity of Simon’s Slaughterhouse and the Meat Market, this area of the park is suggested for a 17 and older audience. Howl-O-Scream is intended for a mature audience. This year’s event contains intense adult content such as violence, gore, and blood. Howl-O-Scream 2018 is a separately-ticketed night event. No costumes are allowed. TRAVELOGUE
THE GODFREY Story and Photos by Melissa W. Martino
Hotel & Cabanas Tampa WTR Pool & Grill
T
he Godfrey Hotel & Cabanas occupies the footprint of the former Bay Harbor Hotel, and that is where the similarity ends. The new Godfrey has been reimagined into a chic but casual and inviting 276 room hotel located in Tampa’s Rocky Point neighborhood. Situated right on the water, guests have a view of either Tampa Bay or the city skyline. The rooms have private balconies or patios, and all the amenities you have come to expect from a stylish hotel — free Wi-Fi, room service, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers and mini-refrigerators. The hotel’s WTR Pool area has fast become the place to be, with luxurious daybeds, chaise lounges and handcrafted cocktails. You can go a step further into indulgence with private cabanas with TVs and refrigerators. The WTR Grill is not the usual dull pool snack bar by any means. It is an excellent restaurant under the helm of Chef Joe Garcia, who has created some very tasty dishes with healthy, smaller portions. Some popular dishes are the Charred Caesar Salad with Parmesan Reggiano, crostini, anchovies, and house Caesar Dressing; the Proscuitto & Arugula Flatbread with fig and whipped goat cheese; and Seared Scallops with grilled Swiss chard and polenta cake topped with pan seared fresh diver scallops, finished with white wine Beurre Blanc. There’s always room for some dessert, and I would suggest the Beignet Bites as a real treat. Weekend brunches and pool parties with DJs and live bands solidify the Godfrey as a great destination for the perfect get-away! The Godfrey is located at 7700 W Courtney Campbell Causeway, Tampa, FL 33607. For more information, please call (813) 281-8900 or visit www.godfreyhoteltampa.com

NATIONAL BRASS ENSEMBLE Gabrieli: Featuring Music For Brass by John Williams
he National Brass Ensemble is comprised of 26 of the finest brass players in major orchestras across the United States. Their repertoire includes excerpts from Giovanni Gabrieli’s innovative Sacrae symphoniae (1597), arranged for this ensemble by trombonist Tim Higgins, and the debut of Music for Brass, a new work by celebrated film composer John Williams. The recording has been inspired by an historic, Grammy Award-winning recording, The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli, featuring the legendary brass ensembles of the Chicago Symphony and the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras. It has been long admired as the definitive modern performance of Giovanni Gabrieli’s works.
PATRICE WILLIAMSON & JON WHEATLEY Comes Love: A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass Patrice Williamson has always drawn favorable comparisons to legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. She has been honored with “Best of Boston” award, and a nominee for “Best Jazz Vocalist” by the Kahlua Boston Music Awards. Her colleagues say “Patrice is a hard-swinging interpreter and a refreshingly accomplished jazz vocal improviser.” Ran Blake sums it up: “It’s a breathtaking voice.” Here she and Jon Wheatley shine as they celebrate the collaboration between Fitzgerald and legendary guitarist Joe Pass. www.riverlily.com
PHIL HAYNES & FREE COUNTRY 60/69 My Favorite Things
M
y Favorite Things (1960-1969) concludes a trilogy by Haynes’ free-wheeling “jazz-grass” string band Free Country, where he’s joined by longtime collaborators Hank Roberts (cello and vocals), Jim Yanda (guitar) and Drew Gress (bass). On this last installment the quartet takes on everything from John Coltrane, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to Burt Bacharach and the theme from Star Trek. Released over nearly two decades, the band’s albums encompass nearly the entire history of American popular music in their own irreverent, stripped-down fashion.

haring a title with one of Paul’s own paintings, Egypt Station is the first full album of all-new McCartney music since 2013’s NEW. Preceded by two of its tracks just released as double A-sides—ballad “I Don’t Know” and raucous stomper “Come On To Me”—Egypt Station was produced (with the exception of one track) by Greg Kurstin. Egypt Station’s 14 songs combine to convey a unique travelogue vibe. Between the opening and closing instrumentals “Station I” and “Station II,” each song finds Paul capturing a place or moment before transporting the listener seamlessly to the next destination.

ole & Chen set out to trace the oceanic songlines from Madagascar to Hawai’i; from New Zealand to Taiwan following the voyages of the ancient seafarers an ancestry which can be traced back over 5,000 years, to an island we now call Taiwan. Visiting 16 island nations, the couple recorded with many of the regions most respected cultural voices in powerful natural settings, using all acoustic instruments, local languages and compositions. The songs developed into a lush, poignant and playful soundtrack to the region and its people. www.smallislandbigsong.com

E
ver feel left out of the party? Vocalist Erin McDougald’s new recording, Outside the Soiree, is a heartfelt ode to all the outsiders. It offers a thematic narrative explored through “McDougald’s evocative artistry” (Chicago Music Guide), a voice that Jazz Improv Magazine has called a “rare instrument to be savored... sweet and spicy, positively mercurial.” The subject matter is poignantly expressed from unexpected musical angles as Erin modernizes and reinterprets obscure standards, her own original composition and genres “outside” the jazz idiom. www.flappergirlsings.com/

and as a session artist before going solo. He and his band (Kenn Moutenot on drums, and Charlie Torres on bass) performed “Hang Carmine Appice on Sloopy”, “Free Ride”, “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and more. Kenn may well be the happiest drummer I have ever seen — barefoot, with a perrenial smile and lion’s mane flying. The friendly smile continues off stage as well. Vanilla Fudge closed the show with “People Get Ready”, and “You Keep Me Hanging On” to mention a few tunes. The band’s musicians are original with the exception of bassist Pete Bremy, who has been with them for 9 years. Mark Stein is on organ, Vince Martell on guitar, and Carmine Appice on drums. They have all performed with other stellar rock names as they take time off from the Fudge to explore other avenues from time to time. Carmine has performed with Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart (with whom he wrote “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Young Turks”). He is now going on tour performing with The Rascals. Hippiefest may have left the building for now, but the timeless music that we all love rocks on.

Joey Molland (Badfinger) opened the show accompanied by Rick Derringer and his band with several of his hits, including “No Matter What.” Mitch Ryder and his keyboardist, Pat Harwood, joined the Derringer Band next with such gems as “Devil With A Blue Dress” into “Good Golly Miss Molly.” Rick Derringer has quite a discography having played with some amazing musicians in different groups

T
he Clearwater Jazz Holiday is a four-day and four-night, live music festival, enjoyed by over 35,000 people the third week of every October and now in its 39th year. The music festival has evolved from a series of concerts on the back of a flatbed truck and at venues around Clearwater into an annual, international, music festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors each year to Coachman Park in Clearwater, against the backdrop of the Gulf of Mexico. The festival features a combination of legendary and relevant musical artists and a gathering of an amazingly diverse fan base. The Jazz Holiday’s modern-day, diverse line-up covers a wide array of musical styles: straight ahead and smooth jazz, swing, blues, jamband, rock, folk, Americana, funk, and Zydeco and showcases a new generation of artists, emerging stars, and classic legends. This year see such stellar acts as George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Morris Day & The Time, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Doobie Brothers, JJ Grey & Mofro, Mindi Abair & The Boneshakers. Sheila E, Marcus Miller and many more. Many different seating packages are available, including VIP. For more information, call 727-461-5200, or visit www.clearwaterjazz.com/experience/

In January 1864, reclusive poet Emily Dickinson receives a surprise guest: Edgar Allan Poe. Although Poe died 15 years prior (he doesn’t seem to understand that), he arrives quite alive and just as energized by death as ever before — one could say death kindly stopped for Emily, after all. Though the evening pits the pendulum of both poets’ personalities against the other in this comic fantasia, Emily and Edgar find they have a lot in common despite their differences. TRAVELOGUE
DOUBLETREE By Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld

P
ulling up to the porte-cochere at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld, while very nice and tropical, does not begin to tell the story of what lies beyond. When this hotel was reimagined two years ago, it made it one of the largest DoubleTrees in the world. They really thought of everything the traveler could want, from families to business folks to weddings. Being steps away from Seaworld, Discovery Cove and the Orange County Convention Center, and only 10 minutes from the airport is an added bonus. The sleek lobby’s centerpiece is the Sonoma Bar, which serves up favorite libations for the weary traveler to enjoy. At the end of the lobby are comfy chairs and a gigantic TV screen to enjoy watching sports action. The extremely high ceiling has skylight windows which change the ambiance of the lobby between day and night. Shops, a convenience store, UPS store and car rental are easily accessed off the lobby. When we checked in at the desk, we received our room key along with some of Doubletree’s delicious fresh made chocolate chip cookies (reason alone to stay at a Doubletree!) When we walked out the back lobby doors on the way to our room, we discovered just how large the complex is — 28 acres — and very verdant. Lots of lush landscaping, seasonal flowers, palm and evergreen trees, and fountain pools. The winding pathways with directional landscape lighting look especially attractive (and romantic) at night. Several swimming pools can be found around the property, some more attractive to families, and some for adults with heated spa pools. Outdoor fun includes a thatched roof-covered billiard table, life-sized checkers set, and mini-golf. A family pool party with DJ adds to the good times.

he 1,020 renovated guest rooms are situated in two and three-story buildings and a tower. Our room was located in the tower, with a great view. The rooms are super comfortable, with a warm inviting decor and luxurious beds.
The centrally located Laguna Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner - mostly comfort food. We had some tasty corn chowder, a Caesar salad, and grilled cheese on garlic challah bread, with cheddar, smoked gouda, and manchego cheese accompanied by fire roasted tomato soup. There’s a grab-n-go market for convenience next door to the Laguna. While at the DoubleTree, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast spread in their new outdoor event space which is amazing. We could see why it is so popular for weddings. The expanded indoor and outdoor area covers more than 100,000 square feet of comfortable meeting space for conferences.

e also had an opportunity to sample some delicious dinner selections from the DoubleTree’s culinary team on our last night at the resort. Steaks, pork chops, potatoes au gratin, fire roasted veggies, and delectable desserts. We definitely took advantage of the proximity of the hotel to experience several theme parks during our stay. If you haven’t been to Discovery Cove, do put it on your bucket list. It’s as if you landed on an island in the Caribbean. Beautiful landscaping, animal experiences (beavers, sloths, bird aviary, otters), gorgeous fish you can snorkel with, a winding river rafting feature, and a delicious buffet. We have been there previously and had the Swim With The Dolphins Experience, which is definitely fun. This time around we tried the SeaVenture, where you walk underwater in a dive helmet, surrounded by tropical fish. Loved it! We also dined with Shamu at SeaWorld, where your table is up against the pool so you can watch the whales do their thing. Very interesting, and the food was quite good and plentiful. After dining, guests are taken into the main amphitheater to see the Shamu show.

isney Springs was also on our list, as they have so many new restaurants that have opened recently. We dined at Celebrity Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’, which serves up southern style “eats.” Bring on that yummy Fried Chicken and some Fried Green Tomatoes! Some unique taste treats were the Ham & Jam Biscuits layered with pimento cheese, Tasso ham, country ham, and blackberry fig jam, and the Fried Chicken & Doughnuts served with house-made sugar doughnuts and mashed potatoes. The hotel’s shuttle will take you to SeaWorld and Universal complimentary, and to Disney World for a nominal fee. It may sound cliche to say the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando has it all, but it actually does, and everyone one of the staff that we encountered was friendly and helpful as well. And don’t forget they have those amazing cookies!

Explore the Surreal Landscape of Dalí’s Mediterranean World
C
Clyde Butcher Reveals Dalí’s Painted Landscapes as His Own Photographed Dreamscapes Thru Nov 25
urrently at the Dali Museum, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain delivers a glimpse into Salvador Dalí’s homeland. The Dalí commissioned Clyde Butcher, the nature photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” to travel to Spain to capture a series of technically brilliant, epically scaled photographs. Throughout his career, Butcher’s photographs have altered people’s perceptions about the Florida environment, and now, will alter the understanding of the surrealist master and the landscape that made him. The Dalí’s new exhibition features 41 original photographs that transport viewers to the striking Catalonian coast, where they are invited to not only appreciate the beauty of Dalí’s beloved environs but also to contemplate the landscapes from an alternate perspective. For this project, Butcher was asked to produce a series of black and white photographs documenting the dramatic splendor of Dalí’s world. “Butcher’s unique abilities to capture the power of light, land and water in black & white deliver spectacular insights into the landscape that had such a profound influence on Dali’s vision and obsessions,” said Hank Hine, Dalí Museum Executive Director. The show is Butcher’s first photographic study
Port Lligat House of Spain. He captured the sublime beauty of Dalí’s Mediterranean world in exquisite detail through large scale, super-sharp monochromatic images. “Butcher did an incredible job of capturing the essence of this land that created Dalí,” said Peter Tush, Dalí Museum Curator of Education and exhibit curator. “The series of photographs displayed in the exhibition truly takes the viewer on an epic journey. “ Butcher himself will host book signings at The Dalí on Sept 29, and Nov 3. Visitors can also join Tush for a “Butcher + Dalí” Coffee with a Curator session on Tues, July 3. The exhibit runs through Nov 25. For more information and events details visit www.thedali.org.

A Claire Clairmont Historical Mystery by Marty Ambrose

873, Florence. Claire Clairmont, the last survivor of the ‘haunted summer of 1816’ Byron/Shelley circle, is living out her final years in genteel poverty, but the appearance of British tourist, William Michael Rossetti, brings hope that she may be able to sell some of her memorabilia to earn enough cash to support her and her niece/companion, Paula. But Rossetti’s presence in Florence heralds a cycle of events that links the summer of 1816 – when Claire conceived an ill-fated child with George Gordon, Lord Byron, when Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, and when four tempestuous lives came together – to a tragic death. As Claire begins to unravel the truth, she must go back to that summer of passion to discover the identity of her old enemy.

A
s a new pier rises where the last inverted pyramid stood downtown St. Petersburg, here’s a look back at the history of the piers. Commerce, tourism, recreation, and even the quest for eternal youth were the primary incentives for building piers along St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront as early as 1854. For more than 160 years, developers and entrepreneurs pushed wooden or concrete structures from the shoreline to the deeper waters of Tampa Bay. Railroads were behind the early development, allowing cargo loads to be transferred from ship to rail with the least amount of effort. A large and profitable fishing industry evolved. Electrically powered trolley cars shuttled tourists to and from cruise ships. Promoters built bathhouses, spas, and bait houses to entice locals and visitors, and casino gathering halls of various, often controversial, styles were proposed, built, destroyed, loved, and detested. Competing piers were built only 10 feet apart. Mother Nature’s elements, including a hurricane, and politics ravaged most of the remaining structures. St. Petersburg Museum of History education director and historian Nevin D. Sitler has combined images curated for a semipermanent pier exhibit with more than 150 other photographs for this entertaining look at the “front door to the Sunshine City.” 100

DEAL ME IN
with Mark Pilarski
www.markpilarski.com/
Lady Luck Smiles Over The Short Run Dear Mark: I am a dedicated blackjack player and follow basic strategy. For years, I have preferred playing one and two deck games), but lately, I find I do better with the six and eight deck shoes. My question is, do the odds and basic strategy change when the number of decks changes? Bob N. Concerning, Bob, you doing better at multiple deck games, your gaming timeline has been relatively short, and, for now, at least, the Gambling Gods have looked favorably on your play. Winning as you have, Bob, is just a temporary loan from Lady Luck. It is always to your advantage to play on a game that offers the fewest decks. Compared to the single-deck game, your two-deck game handicaps your play 0.35%, but as you climb the ladder to four decks, the handicap clambers up to 0.48%, at six decks, it’s 0.54% and at eight decks, it is 0.58%.
The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its ongoing Happy Hour program in The Underground speakeasy exhibition. The speakeasy’s full-service bar purveys not only house-distilled moonshine and craft beer, but also wines by the glass, non-alcoholic beverages and a tempting array of authentic, Prohibition-inspired cocktails. From 5 to 7 p.m., Mon through Fri, visitors can now enjoy 20% off select craft cocktails, draft beer and wine by the glass. In addition, visitors can take a taste of Prohibition history home with them with The Underground’s house-distilled moonshine and proprietary vodka.
Note however that even though the house edge goes up considerably when you go from one deck to two, the rate of increase becomes less dramatic as you add more decks. To truly get a good deal when playing blackjack as a basic strat-
egy player, it is important to look for a game with favorable rules. More than any other casino game, the rules for blackjack will vary considerably from casino to casino, with some blackjack games being better for the player than others. The most important rule look out for – and one that is becoming routine – is the 6-5 blackjack payout. If you want to play on good blackjack games, it is essential that you avoid these tables at all cost. Only play on games that offer 3-2 payouts on blackjacks. The fewer decks, the better. Additionally, your best value is to play at a casino that offers the following combination of rules that www.AccentOnTampaBay.com
are advantageous to the player: • The fewer decks, the better • Surrender, both early and late • Double down allowed on any two cards • Double down allowed after splitting pairs • Multiple pair splitting allowed, plus re-splitting aces • Dealer stands on a soft 17 While many Las Vegas casinos now offer terrible rules on blackjack, there are still several places where a good game can be had. The El Cortez is probably the best place to play blackjack in the Downtown area. They still spread a single-deck blackjack game that still offers the ideal 3-2 odds on a blackjack. That game has a house edge of about .3%, while a double-deck game there comes with a .45% edge. Be aware, Bob, that they DO sweat the money at the El Cortez. If you use any spread betting, plan on being backed off the game. As for the basic strategy differences between single and multiple decks, yes, there are subtle changes between the games. My suggestion, Bob, is to purchase a “multi-deck” laminated basic strategy card from the casino gift shop and use it at the table while learning and eventually memorizing the modifications. 107

Is your collection like the Rockefellers?
R
ecently, one of the most important and diverse fine art and antiques collections amassed from all parts of the world went up for sale on the auction block at Christie’s in New York. The collection belonged to David and Peggy Rockefeller. David Rockefeller died at 101 and was Head of Chase Manhattan bank, a philanthropist, and grandson of John D. Rockefeller. What struck me most about the Rockefeller collection and their well-advertised art and antiques auction had very little to do with the exceptional beauty, artistry, or value of any of the nearly 2,000 items. Certainly, there were fine paintings by Cezanne, Seurat, and Gris to name only a few. On the auction block was a highly sought-after Pablo Picasso painting of a girl holding a basket of flowers once owned by Gertrude Stein, various pieces of antique English furniture, and a Sevres porcelain service commissioned by Napoleon himself. Yet, the variety of objects in this highly publicized once in a lifetime auction was not what stuck with me when I read --in newspapers, trade publications, magazines, and online --all about the Rockefellers’ collection and their prearranged donations to museums, foundations, and universities. fact, what I remember about the reports of the Rockefeller auction was the comment that the couple’s youngest child, Eileen Rockefeller Growald, made when an interviewer asked her if she would attend the auction of her parents’ belongings. Her answer was no. She explained, “It feels like sell-
ing pieces of my parents and I just can’t watch.” Right there is why you, your children and your grandchildren are probably a lot more like the Rockefellers than you might think. While most of us don’t have the collections of note or the resources to amass such a collection over generations that the Rockefellers had, most of us do have objects that mean something special to our friends and family. Eileen Rockefeller Growald’s comment moved me because so many people tell me that their children don’t want their stuff, that their family www.AccentOnTampaBay.com
wouldn’t care about this collectible or that piece of furniture. I know that isn’t true. I think it is often a mechanism for people to take the easy road. The road far away from being hurt if a daughter rejects a family china dinnerware set from Austria where your grandmother was born or if a son doesn’t covet the violin that he took lessons on which once belonged to his greatgrandfather from Italy. It is easier to contend that a family member doesn’t want a work of art, antique, or collectible instead of putting in the time, effort, and emotional resources to deal with it as it moves onto another person’s collection. I was taken aback as one brief statement from Mrs. RockefellerGrowald a member of one of the most prestigious collecting families in America and possibly of the 20th Century, made the case for how objects impact loved ones and speak volumes about what is important to a family. She connected her parents’ objects with what was important to her parents—ancestry, global point of view, history, beauty, craftsmanship, diversity, etc. Everyone, no matter their social status, connect through objects. I’m biased because I work with objects or artifacts every day. I research how objects were
made, what an object says about a particular time period or historical era, how an object relates to or identifies a certain culture, what emotions an object stirs with owners or heirs, how an object can recall memories the way my Mother’s canister set used to help her remember a recipe during her struggles with dementia, and the like. Perhaps your collection is not like the Rockefellers in size, scope, or value. Maybe you don’t have a Picasso that your children are liquidating to give the multimillion-dollar proceeds from its sale to a major museum or important philanthropic foundation, but there are works of art, antiques, even small collectible objects or souvenirs from your travels in your home that your children and grandchildren associate with you and your values. Perhaps many of them couldn’t watch your items go by the wayside either. So, before you downsize, liquidate, or dispose of your heirlooms, have a chat with your kids and your grandkids, think about your friends, and others who would like a memento. Of course, value is important but their feelings are more important. When it comes to your children’s attitude about your antiques, you may be just like the Rockefellers.
