RAISING CANE at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village Sat, Jan 12 Join the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village for the third annual Cane Syrup festival. The Museum will host a traditional cane syrup making demonstration, making syrup the old fashioned way. Using a technique that has been practiced for several hundred years, volunteers grind sugar cane into juice using a mule or tractor powered mill and then boil the juice into cane syrup. The process takes approximately six hours to complete with four of those hours reserved for the cooking process. Once completed, the syrup is then for sale in the Museum’s gift shop as a fundraiser. Cane syrup was a staple of the pioneer’s diet and remains a favorite among life long residents of the South. Charlie Kirksey, the head of the Museum’s syrup operation, says that “eighty gallons of juice will make eight to ten gallons of syrup”. Kirksey is also quick to point out that the Museum’s syrup mill is home to several examples of early grinders and a cooking kettle that dates back to the Civil War. He also says that he and other volunteers are “dedicated to preserving this old time method”. For the third year, there will be a syrup tasting contest with more than two dozen syrup-makers from around the state bringing in their samples to be judged on taste, color, pour, and clarity. This special Saturday will also feature a monthly garden tractor pull in the early afternoon, hand-made crafts, and traditional musicians. The concession stand will be open with syrup-sopping biscuits as well as pulled pork sandwiches. The museum is located one mile north of downtown Dade City, off of US 301 at15602 Pioneer Museum Road. www.pioneerfloridamuseum.org/

JANUARY EVENTS BOOK NOOK - Sat, Jan 5 The theme for this Book Nook by the Bay is “New Life in the Ocean.” The program features the book, Mister Seahorse, written by Eric Carle. The seahorse is a fish where roles are a bit reversed for “motherhood.” When Mrs. Seahorse announces that it is time to lay her eggs, Mr. Seahorse asks, “Can I help?” He does. The eggs are laid in his pouch. The expectant father meets up with other daddy fish who are also in charge of prenatal care. Mr. Stickleback hatches the eggs, Mr. Tilapia holds the eggs in his mouth and Mr. Kurtus, a nurseryfish, sticks the eggs on his head until they hatch. Visitors will learn about The Pier Aquarium’s new Seahorse Corral exhibit for a local species known as the Lined Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus). One of the most unusual in appearance of all fishes, the seahorse resembles a knight in a chess set. The Book Nook is free to members, children six and under and those who have purchased an aquarium admission. 10:30am Fresh Fish Theater Craft Activity and talk. 11:15am - Book Reading, Mister Seahorse written by Eric Carle. Kettle of Fish - Sun, Jan 6 Remember the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? One of their founding members, Jimmie Fadden, is a member of “Kettle of Fish”. They have been performing in clubs, pubs and venues all over the United States and the world for years. They have shared the stage with members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Roger Waters’ Band, Pat Travers, Dickey Betts, Eddie Money, Molly Hatchet, Elvin Bishop, the Marshall Tucker Band, among others. Their music is more of a rootsy “blues rock with soul.” Courtyard by the Bay - 1:00-4:00 p.m. Patchouli LIVE at The Pier - Sun, Jan 13 Nationally touring, award winning songwriter Julie Patchouli and master guitarist Bruce Hecksel light up the air with sparkling acoustic sounds and their powerful contagious chemistry. Patchouli’s down-to-earth, hopeful songwriting is “New American Folk” blending elements of folk, pop, flamenco and jazz with world beat rhythms. Patchouli’s sound has been described as “the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel meet the guitar brilliance of the Gipsy Kings. Having just released their 15th CD Terra Guitarra, Dragonfly, Patchouli is as busy in the studio as they are on the road, with 11 CDs featuring their very own brand of original modern folk music and 4 CDs under the name Terra Guitarra for their all instrumental Spanish style guitar project, including a holiday music CD Winter Solstice. Sunken Treasure Scavenger Hunt - Sat, Jan 26 The streets of downtown St. Petersburg will serve as your very own treasure map. Whether or not you get the treasure, is entirely up to you. Lewis, with acclaimed British actor David Payne, is a dramatic production that has been an enthralling theatrical experience for the many thousands who have attended its performances. Tolkien, he has agreed to give an informal talk to a group of American writers who are visiting England. PRISONER OF PASSION - Sun, Feb 17 at 2 pm. STRAZ 2013 SEASON

T

HE STRAZ SEASON offers Cole Porter’s classic Anything Goes, feel-good romps with ’80s hits like Priscilla Queen of the Desert’s “I Will Survive” and Flashdance’s “Flashdance – What A Feeling,” the poignant and spectacular drama War Horse, the exhilarating and evocative Traces and the all-singing, all-dancing celebration of the Gershwins in ’S Wonderful. WICKED - Jan 9-27. Variety calls WICKED “a cultural phenomenon,” and previous engagements in Tampa have sold out and broken box office records. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One — born with emerald green skin — is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete — and completely satisfying — musical in a long time” (USA Today). Recommended for ages 8+ TRACES - Jan 29 - Feb 3. TRACES combines awe-inspiring acrobatics with infectious urban energy. Fusing the traditions of circus with the energy of street performance, the artists of TRACES employ every trick in the book — from music, dance, and illustration to skateboarding, basketball, and high-risk acrobatics — to make a lasting impression. TRACES relies on the fantastic abilities of the performers, individuals who appear to be nothing more than a group of friends, just as easygoing, affable, and potentially clumsy as the guy next door — until they unleash 90 minutes of heart-stopping acrobatics and unbridled energy that leave audiences breathless and exhilarated. Season Shows Coming Up: Flashdance - Feb. 19 - 24; Anything Goes - March 12 - 17; Priscilla Queen of the Desert - April 9 - 14; War Horse - April 30 - May 5; American Idiot - May 17 - 19. THE PIANO LESSON Jan 18 - March 3 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding New Play”; New York Drama Critics Circle Award for “Best Play”. It is 1936 and Boy Willie arrives in Pittsburgh from the South in a battered truck loaded with watermelons to sell. He has an opportunity to buy some land down home, but he has to come up with the money quickly. He wants to sell an old piano that has been in his family for generations, but he shares ownership with his sister and it sits in her living room. She has already rejected several offers because the antique piano is covered with incredible carvings detailing the family’s rise from slavery. The issue of whether or not to sell it cuts deeply and raises questions about honoring the past or moving

into the future. Mature subject matter and language. WHEN THE WORLD WAS GREEN (A CHEF’S FABLE) - March 22 - April 21 A hauntingly lyrical memory play about an old man - once a superb chef - and the young reporter who comes to interview him in the prison…where he has been locked up for a mysterious act. WHEN THE WORLD WAS GREEN is steeped in the elliptical, poetic style for which Shepard is justly celebrated. Though it is sketched in a world of sensual delight, of great journeys to distant lands, and exotic food “piled as high as a mountain, glistening in the sun”, the beauty of Shepard’s landscape is only skin-deep. Under the surface lies a family vendetta that has lasted for seven generations. A tender story of regret and loss through which these two unique characters transcend their memories and reach mutual forgiveness and love. 9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL - Jan 4 – Feb 24 9 To 5: The Musical is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. It tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do -- even in a man’s world. Join Violet, Judy and Dora Lee as they take on Franklin Hart, a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot while learning more about themselves and each other. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, 9 To 5: The Musical is about teaming up and taking care of business... it’s about getting credit and getting even! JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT - March 1 - April 21 The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. Shakespeare Festival Continuing thru January 26 variety of area arts organizations will present a collaborative Shakespeare Festival celebrating William Shakespeare’s wide-reaching influence across the arts, which will include orchestra programs, Shakespeare-inspired films, an art exhibit, dramatic readings, Shakespeare in song, excerpts from plays and other events through January 26. The participating organizations include The Florida Orchestra, American Stage Theatre Company, The Dali Museum, The Mahaffey Theater, The Studio@620, St. Petersburg College School of Music, Sunscreen Film Festival, and the University of South Florida School of Music. Music played an important part in Shakespeare’s work; his words not only filled dozens of sonnets and narrative poems, but appeared in song text sprinkled throughout his plays. Part of the Florida Orchestra’s programming in the month of January focuses on composers who have been drawn to the subjects of the great English dramatist to create a variety of orchestral music. In addition to the symphonic repertoire, operas, operettas, musicals and songs based on Shakespeare’s dramatic works, his influence on many other art forms is equally vast and immeasurable. Nearly 400 years after his death, the genius and relevancy of Shakespeare still moves artists and inspires the creation of new works based on his words and ideas.

easons 52’s new fall menu offers diners some fresh delectable choices, from appetizers to dessert. I sampled some of their tasty dishes recently and was more than pleased with everything. The restaurant’s Master Sommelier, George Miliotes has come up with clever wine pairings to complement Director of Culinary Chef Clifford Pleau‘s new menu. This season Miliotes’ theme is “Drink Them Before They’re Famous,” introducing some new wines into the mix. Double Hummus with Sea Salt Lavosh

Seasons 52 is a fresh grill and wine bar located in 13 states, with 9 restaurants in Florida, and found locally in Tampa and Orlando. An open kitchen is always a comfort to diners, and Seasons 52 is a bustling one. Using wood-fire grilling and brick-oven cooking actually produces food which is lower in calories. The restaurant states that nothing on its menu is over 475 calories. Chef Pleau is inspired by what’s best at the farmer’s market, and this season he’s chosen fall fruits, veggies and apropo colors.

Tasty and Healthy!

F www.accentontampabay.com

or the last 4000 years Garlic has been both cherished and reviled, sought for its healing powers and shunned for its pungent after effects. From miracle drug to vampire repellent, garlic has had an important place in many aspects of human history. The allicin in raw, crushed garlic has been shown to kill 23 types of bacteria, including salmonella and staphylococcus. Heated garlic gives off another compound, diallyldisulphide-oxide, which has been shown to lower serum cholesterol by preventing clotting in the arteries. Vitamins in garlic, such as A, B, and C, stimulate the body to fight carcinogens and get rid of toxins, and may even aid in preventing certain types of cancer, such as stomach cancer. Garlic’s sulfur compounds can regulate blood sugar metabolism, stimulate and detoxify the liver, and stimulate the blood circulation and the nervous system. Now that we know the health benefits of garlic, lets talk about what it does for flavoring our food — Wonders! There are many ways to prepare garlic, but no one has prepared it for the cook as well as Garlic Gold. Garlic Gold is a delicious combination of organic toasted garlic pieces and organic extra-virgin olive oil. It adds unique flavor and crunchy texture to anything from vegetables to chicken, shrimp or beef. It’s dynamite in salad dressing and the nuggets are especially tasty as crouton replacements or sprinkled atop a split loaf of crusty bread, slathered in butter - the ultimate in garlic bread. Even chef extraordinaire Emeril Lagasse raves about it. Garlic Gold comes as garlic nuggets in oil, plain toasted garlic nuggets or garlic-infused oil - each are fabulous. Sprinkle original Garlic Gold Nuggets or blends like Garlic Gold Sea Salt or Garlic Gold Herbs de Provence on meats and veggies, and your family and guests will keep asking for more. Carmel Cafe & Wine Bar Hyde Park’s Newest Dining Spot Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

F

or the uninitiated, Carmel Cafe & Wine Bar is a little slice of the California coast plunked down in Florida. If you look out the restaurant’s window, you expect to see cliffside cypress trees leaning out over the ocean. But this is Florida, so no cliffs. However, the interior decor has a definitely CA feel as does the eclectic modern Mediterranean style cuisine. Also, a bit of Silicon Valley is present with the clever use of iPads as menus! All the menu items are beautifully photographed with complete descriptions and (very reasonable) prices. You can order your courses as you go along, or all at once. The iPads are easy to use, and also very intuitive. If you have a restless child (or internet-addicted significant other) you can even troll the internet with it. What sets this menu apart from the same-old same-old is the creative use of their fresh ingredients. The new fall offerings include recipes you probably haven’t experienced in other area restaurants. Our recent menu sampling at the new Carmel Cafe in Hyde Park was a real taste bud treat.

Danish Baked Brie with toasted walnuts, dried cranberries and puff pastry.

Seasonal Flatbread with caramelized pear, blue cheese and roasted red pepper.

Carmel Cafe has concocted their own seasonal cocktails, and one is sure to please you. We tried the Italian Old Fashioned with Buffalo Trace Kentucky bourbon, peach jam, and amarena cherry, and the Watermelon Granita - a hibiscus-infused watermelon margarita, which was our favorite. The Cafe’s Mezze Platter starter dish is a trip to the Med with edamame hummus, Muhammarra and goat cheese stuffed pepperdews, fried feta cheese, marinated artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes and grilled pita. The flavorful Madeira Dates stuffed with goat cheese and Serrano ham was an unexpected menu item. Another great choice was the Danish Baked Brie with toasted walnuts, dried cranberries and puff pastry. Not to be missed is one of Carmel’s wonderful flatbreads. We had the Seasonal Flatbread with caramelized pear, blue cheese and roasted red pepper, which was crispy and full of fall flavors. Seafood lovers will want to try the Seafood Medley with scallops, shrimp, calamari, mussels, chorizo, Israeli couscous, olives and roasted peppers. The Roasted veggie of the evening was one of our particular favorites - Brussels Sprouts with bacon. 60

Two new pastas are delightful - the Four Cheese Stuffed Cannelloni (ricotta, fontina, parmesan and asiago) with a bolognese sauce, and the very tasty Spinach Gnocchi swimming in a creamy Parmesan sauce. Fans of anything cooked with wine, we really enjoyed the tender Chicken Madeira with Portobello mushrooms in a rich wine sauce, and served with mashed parsnip potatoes. With very little room left to squeeze any more food, we ended our repast with the new fall sweet, a Warm Poached Pear with vanilla ice cream and a caramel sauce. The lovely items we enjoyed are just a small selection of the Cafe’s full menu, bursting with interesting, clever, and above all, delicious fare. The restaurant is located at 3601 W. Swann Ave., Tampa. If you can’t make it to Hyde Park, there are three other Carmel Cafe locations to choose from: Countryside, Carrollwood, and Sarasota. Art Lines THE ART OF GOLF

T

he Art of Golf is the first major museum exhibition in America devoted to this popular game, so rich in history and tradition. Organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the National Galleries of Scotland, this show features approximately 90 works by Rembrandt, Childe Hassam, George Bellows, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol, among others. Some of these works have never before been on public display. They all point to golf’s ability to inspire extraordinary works of art. The centerpiece is Charles Lees’ The Golfers (1847), the world’s greatest painting in this genre. Reproductions of the work hang in golf clubhouses around the world, but this masterpiece has never before traveled to the United States. It depicts a match played on the Old Course at St. Andrews, with a wealth of fashionable observers gathered around the athletes. Preparatory sketches (portraits of individuals in the painting) and an early photograph by Hill and Adamson, to which Lees referred, will provide context. So will “golfiana”antique balls, clubs, and clothing-to illustrate the sport’s earliest days. The Art of Golf takes a chronological approach to the paintings, as the history of the game unfolds. It begins with images of kolf, a cousin of the modern game, in seventeenth-century Dutch landscape and genre paintings. The exhibition even includes winter scenes of kolf being played on Holland’s frozen canals. Rembrandt’s famous etching, The Ringball Player (1654), is also part of this section. 72

thru Feb 17

Golf really had its foundation in Scotland. This development is brilliantly documented by the earliest known depiction of the game in the country (around 1740) and a series of Scottish golfing portraits from the National Galleries of Scotland. William Mosman’s charming fulllength double-portrait of the tartan-clad youngsters Sir

Alexander MacDonald (about 1749) is a high point. So, too, is the dignified portrait of Dr. William Inglis (about 1790) by Sir Henry Raeburn, one of Scotland’s leading artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Inglis’s elegant silver club is displayed on the adjacent table as a sign of aristocracy or perhaps meritocracy. 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-896-2667; www.fine-arts.org

THE MAN, THE IMAGE & THE WORLD: Henri CartierBresson, A Retrospective thru Jan 13 Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908– 2004) was one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. His work not only exerted a major influence on photography but also helped his profession achieve a new status. From his first works of the 1930s that stand out for their composition, the theatrical nature of the images and the selection of details, CartierBresson succeeded in recording important moments with his camera. His 1952 book, Images a la Sauvette (The Decisive Moment), introduced his ideas about creating images that combined story, action and emotion. Entire stories are often condensed into a single image, the so-called “decisive moment.” The photographer once said that photography was “putting one’s head, one’s heart and one’s eye on the same axis.” The Man, the Image & the World. Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective includes over 330 photographs, films and important publications. This exhibition is held in conjunction with the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson and Magnum Photos/Paris. Cartier-Bresson chose the works for this exhibition before his death in 2004. The exhibition has recently been on view in Zurich, Brisbane, and Seoul.

from the Phillips Collection presents 107 paintings by seventyfive artists that trace the course of American painting from the 1850s through the 1960s and examines the progress of modern art with the works of artists such as Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Rockwell Kent, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Grandma Moses, Jacob Lawrence, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko. After the death of his father and brother, museum founder Duncan Phillips turned to his love of paint-

ing to deal with his loss, and in 1921 he created The Phillips Memorial Art Gallery to honor his father and brother, opening a gallery to the public in his family’s Washington, D.C., home. Later renamed The Phillips Collection, it became the first museum of modern art in America. Mythic Creatures of China - thru July 14, 2013 Chinese artists have portrayed animals in ceramics across thousands of years of the country’s con-

tinuous history. These animals captured the imaginations of Chinese potters as they sought to portray animals they had seen, and others they could only imagine. Drawn from the Ringling’s collection of Chinese ceramics, these animals will tickle your fancy with their stories, legends and vibrancy. Almost one hundred objects are presented, including dragons, butterflies, fish and phoenix. The Warren J. and Margot Coville Photography Collection - thru Feb 3 Celebrating the gift of over 700 photographs to the collection, this exhibition will feature a representative sampling of images spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. The Warren J. and Margot Coville collection includes work by renowned photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Berenice Abbott, and

Robert Capa. A number of works might be deemed photojournalistic and is, therefore, a potent mirror of social change over the century. Paolo Veronese - Dec 7 - April 14, 2013 Paolo Veronese (1528–1588) was one of the giants of Venetian painting, the most elegant of the triumvirate that also included Titian and Tintoretto. Veronese is perhaps best known for his grand

ceiling paintings and large scenes of Biblical feasts. Yet throughout his successful career, he and his workshop also created imposing altarpieces and smaller religious paintings, striking portraits, depictions of sensual episodes drawn from the classical tradition, and allegories glorifying the Venetian state. 941-358-3180, or visit www.ringling.org 74

FLORIDA MUSEUM of PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS MARIO ALGAZE: CUBA 1999-2000 thru Jan 27 Born in Cuba in 1947, he remembers a happy childhood in the well-to-do Art Deco Havana neighborhood of Miramar. He can recall “the smell of seaweed and saltwater washing on the rocks.” It was a magical time. All this ended when he was 13 years old. That’s when he was brought to Miami by his parents. He was 52 years old before he was able to return. “I was 19 or 20 years old when I picked up the camera,” he said. “I decided to cover concerts and the cultural revolution of the time. My first published photo was of Mick Jagger when I was 25.” But after five years of photographing rock stars, he found himself dissatisfied with photojournalism. A 1974 trip to Mexico was a turning point for him, and he concentrated on photographing Latin America. On his return to Cuba in 1999, he asked for and received a letter from the authorities allowing him to photograph anywhere on the country. In the resulting images, time has stopped. Clocks seem frozen at the dawn of the Castro era.

Neater Feeder -

The Perfect Answer for Sloppy Pets

T

he Neater Feeder is the greatest thing since sliced bread — well, if you have a messy pet like I do. I have cats. One is a very large cat, who, for some reason likes to fling his wet and/or dry food around. It seems more shows up on the floor than started out in the bowl. Enter the Neater Feeder. This pet feeder is a revolutionary system for cats and dogs that actually contains spills and splashes - no more messes all over the kitchen floor. The two-part container allows food to stay in the top reservoir while water naturally drains into the easy to empty lower reservoir, protecting floors from stains and damage and making cleanup a snap. Neater Feeder comes in different sizes for varied size pets — your Great Dane and your Chihuahua will both be content. It also comes with leg extensions so that you can make the height comfortable for your pet. This is especially good for an aging pet that may have trouble getting down low. It also helps with their ease of digestion. The bowls are made of stainless steel, which means you don’t have to worry about unsightly stained bowls, and using the raised bowl will almost eliminate food and water stains on tile. Another plus is that it’s ant proof. The Neater Feeder comes in attractive finishes including bronze and cranberry so that the pet dish doesn’t take away from the home’s decor. ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest sanctuary for big cats who have been abused, abandoned, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others — a total of 16 of the 35 species of wild cat, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild. At this home for rare and exotic cats, The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home they can for these cats. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. People are urged to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. This is accomplished through guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is a great resource for information about exotic cats. Big Cat Rescue has built enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on a 45 acre site, and provides the best nutritional and medical care possible. They have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for the cats physical and psychological well being. The sanctuary is supported entirely by donation. Big Cat Rescue is located at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa. Call 813-920-4130 for more information, or visit BigCatRescue.org.

urder, mayhem, militias, marijuana, mafia and The Mons. A criminal history of Tampa focusing on its most infamous people and events of the past century. Yes, Tampa has a dark side. Tampa’s history can be divided into three dark eras - the early years of danger, where the greatest fear was the nightmarish individuals who were allowed to roam the nights in a city without a proper law enforcement organization in place; the mid-1900s when one of the most power criminal syndicates in the nation made its home in Tampa and when a another nation’s revolutionary war affected the city’s residents; and the late 1900s to early 2000s when Tampa became a sexual playground. Whether known or unknown, good or bad, each of the individuals explored in this book had an impact on Tampa’s history. Paul Guzzo writes for La Gaceta Newspaper - the nation’s only tri-linguel newspaper. Along with his brother, he has produced numerous independent films that have shown all over the world, and have won dozens of awards along the way.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR FANTASTIC FLORIDA FISHING By Capt Bill Miller

I

n 2013, make it a point to experience as much of the Tampa Bay area’s great fishing as you can. Here are some suggestions: J anuary Canals – Fish residential canals where redfish, snook and trout escape the cold and wind by huddling around docks and seawalls and sitting in deep water. Bounce a jig or live shrimp slowly. Also, the St. Joseph Sound trout bite should be in full swing. February S h eeps h ead – Winter finds sheepshead gathering for their spawn, so look for them around rock piles, bridge pilings, seawall rip rap and docks are their hangouts. Live fiddler crabs are my favorite bait although bait shop supplies can be inconsistent. Live shrimp also works. Use a light lead to take the bait to the bottom for the best presentation. March Macks – Spanish

92

mackerel should be showing up along with schools of whitebait. Look for macks around bait schools and at the Skyway Bridge. Speckled trout action should be good

the lights at the Gandy and Howard Frankland Bridges. Everything starts happening in April so options are unlimited. May Tarpon – This is tarpon time at the Skyway Bridge. Bait should be loaded and the tarpon come in and go straight there to feed and get ready for the spawn. Mackerel should be thick over reefs in the bay and near shore. Pier anglers will be casting silver spoons and floating greenbacks for mackerel. Flats action is wide open.

over the grass flats if the water is not too cold. Use whitebait or jigs and top waters. April Kings – March sees kingfish arrive but April sees the best action. (Easter is usually prime time.) Look for tarpon under www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

June Permit – Check the wrecks and reefs inside of 5 miles for permit. Float a small live blue crab over the wreck. Tarpon will be cruising the beaches in schools and stealthy anglers casting live crabs and whitebait can have some early morning fun. July Scalloping – Scallop season opens as does gag grouper. Homosassa/Crystal River and north to Steinhatchee offers prime

scallop areas with plenty of guides if you don’t have a boat. Gag grouper also opens with lots of fish available over reefs and rock piles inside of 10 miles, as well as inside Tampa Bay. Troll channel edges with big lipped plugs or curly tail jigs on downriggers. August AJs – Amberjack season opens and back-breaking action will be found over deep water wrecks and springs. Blue water trolling will deliver marlin, sailfish, tuna, dolphin and wahoo around the wrecks and springs and in the Loop Current. Mangrove snapper are gathering up to spawn so target them over the ship channel edge, reefs and structure inside of Tampa Bay. September Reds – There is a really good topwater bite for trout and redfish in the Cedar key area. Redfish in Tampa Bay will form big

schools around Weedon Island, Tarpon Key and Terra Ceia Bay. Spanish mackerel should be thick. October Trout –Topwater trout fishing will be really good – especially in the morning. Kingfish will return. Glass minnows get real thick along the gulf beaches with mackerel, kingfish, bonito, sharks and plenty of tarpon feeding heavily. November Bounty – Kingfish will be plentiful around The Drop (off Blind Pass) and Egmont Channel markers 5-6 and 3-4. Jiggle up live baits with sabiki rigs and deploy them immediately. Target potholes and sloughs on extreme low tides for trout, redfish and sheepshead. Live shrimp always works but jigs cover lots of territory and usually outperform bait. December Power Plants

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

– The warm water discharge of power plants (Big Bend, Weedon Island, Anclote) draw multiple species. Cobia often cruise at the surface and eagerly eat live pinfish or 10-inch purple plastic eels on jig heads. Pompano will take a yellow or white pompano jig with a pink teaser fly. Look for big schools of silver trout and vertically jig tandem Love Lures. Note: I excluded snook because I believe the fish are not yet ready to be pressured. They’re recovering from the killer freeze a couple of years ago, but we still need to give them time to rebound so maybe they can make next year’s list of New Year’s Resolution. For fishing videos, catch photos and lots of angling resources, visit www.fishingwithbillmiller.com. For fishing charters in the Tampa Bay area, call (813) 363-9927.
