2.2.4 Any proposed development should avoid where possible, long narrow spaces; instead attempting to provide a mJm ber of spaces, or linked courtyards. Where a scheme proposes the developm~nt of .1 number of backland sites as one unit, the layout should provide for a series of linked spaces, rather than a single large parking lot, with development around it. Where a space Is in excess of 40 111cl ·es in length, or 15 metres in width, it is desirable that the said space be divided into smaller elements through the use of buildings, walls or surface treatments.

Re-use of buildings

2.2.5 Buildings already existing within some courtyards ohen lend a particular character to the space, and in such instance5, their rernntion will be a primary consideration.

Where the nature of the development dictates an alternative point of access, this type of architectural detailing should be applied to prevent "the loss of character to the Area. Alternative options for these existing features may include their re-use as a shop front within the arched aperture.
