The Indian Government plans to develop 100 smart cities and an allocation of ` 7,060 crore has been proposed in the Union Budget. Several countries have already expressed their interest to be a part of this mega initiative. The US is keen to help India in developing three such cities: Allahabad, Ajmer and Visakhapatnam. It would also like to be part of providing clean water and sewage facilities in 500 cities across the country.

Project monitoring at a click T
he Government of India has set up a project monitoring group (PMG) to fast track major investment projects worth ` 1,000 crores and above and impart transparency in clearance procedures. Anil Swarup-led PMG has decided to digitise all applications for clearances relating to forest, environment and others by March 2015. In an interview with Subhajit Roy, Mr Swarup highlights the roadmap for his group. How do you look at the current trends in infrastructure? Is there any kind of change after the new government comes in? There is a lot of positive energy; a lot of purposive discussion. Today people feel much more comfortable in having open discussion and then taking decision. In the project monitoring group we get this feel that the ministries are taking decision – files are getting fast tracked. Is this because of the change in perception… Yes. I think the signals from the top are

very positive and that is what makes the difference. Earlier, what are the challenges the policy makers were facing? Earlier there was evident reluctance in part of some of the bureaucracies to take decision apprehending action subsequently. Today, I think an assurance has come from the top that if the decisions are bonafide then no harm should come to the bureaucracy. That probably has made some difference. What are the efforts taken up by new government to speed-up the projects? Apart from clearances they have mandate now to see an actual action happens on the ground in terms of economic activity, whether in case of generation, production or services. So we are also keeping a close look at the projects that clearances have been given to ascertain whether actual economic activities are commenced on the ground. kind of transparency? There would be total transparency. As we are digitising all the processes for the clearance as well as for registration, it will become totally transparent. The industry will be able to file applications on the portal and track those applications against specified timelines. This is already happened in case of environment and forest ministry. We are engaging with other ministries too. We hope that by 31st March 2015 all the clearances and registration, at least most of them could be available through portal. What are the long- and short-term objectives of PMG? So far the PMG has facilitated clearances for 176 projects worth ` 5.7 lakh crore. At present, there are over 450 projects listed on the portal. Our immediate objective is to continue to push for clearances. Our medium-term objective is to digitise all the processes and see their statuses are available online to the industry. n

Need an integrated approach to development: Gadkari capacity to be taken up from the dismal 3 kms per day currently to 30 kms per day in the next two years.
U
nion Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has reassured that most problems related to infrastructure were being addressed and that positive changes will be seen soon. Speaking at a session titled ‘Mind the Trillion Dollar Gap’ at the India Economic Summit in New Delhi he announced that the govt. has set an ambitious target for the road-building
Speaking about the issues and challenges, Gadkari mentioned land acquisition, cost of capital, and environment, among others which needed to be addressed. The multiplicity of laws and policies, Ministries involved, attitudes and approaches to infrastructure development were causing bottlenecks and resulting in stalled or cancelled projects with huge economic and social costs. India needs development and everyone must understand this and facilitate it, he stressed, adding that the Government would not, for instance, push for development at the cost of environment. An “integrated” approach is required, he said, stressing that the Government was taking cognizance of the challenges and taking steps to facilitate investment in infrastructure. Highlighting some of the challenges that industry faces, Ajit Gulabchand, Chairman
and Managing Director, Hindustan Construction Company, said that land acquisition remains the biggest hurdle and the delays and cancellations cause economic losses often as high as 50 per cent of the cost of the project. This is compounded by multiple challenges that are extraneous to the Ministry such as environmental clearances, the Companies Bill, etc all of which need to be addressed for India to be able to get the kind of infrastructure it needs and deserves. Stressing that all stakeholders need to work together, Gulabchand said the focus should be on ensuring that the policies and processes are fair and transparent, and that the dispute resolution mechanism is credible and easy to implement and follow. Gadkari said that the Government is working to address these issues and mentioned that they are working to change the model agreement to make it fair to all. n
Tall Buildings II Cover Story

Cover Story II Tall Buildings
T
he recent trends of urban living reflect the continued urban renaissance in urban centres across the globe, representing the greatest cultural shift particularly during the last decade. Urban living is the product of interrelated demographic, economic, social and cultural factors. Continuous economic growth during the past decade has made city centre living an aspiration. For the young generation, living in the centre of metro is “the lifestyle”. Repackaged urban centres providing an arena for what cultural commentators have labelled an ‘extended adolescence’, proximity to work and leisure facilitating a ‘work hard and play hard’ attitude.
Defining tall buildings The definition of tall building is subjective. Tall building is a function of the relative dimensions of comparable buildings within a certain locale. A 30-storey building in proximity to 10- or 15-storey buildings could certainly be perceived as ‘tall’ whilst in the environment of mature high-rise development in a world city it would not. Important aspects for a tall building “Clearly, any building of any height would fail without a well-engineered structure,” says Daniel Safarik, Editor, Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. When the Illinois Sky City in Chicago was built in 1956, it was outrageous building with 528 floors, each with a height of 10 feet. And it was possible because of the vision of legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, an Welsh-American architect. Its structure is considered “the guideline” of today’s skyscraper. Then there is the science of wind. “Wind engineering takes on a particular importance with tall buildings, as wind speeds increase with height, and the height-to-width ratio of a building becomes more of a factor,” explains Mr Safarik. “And all buildings have a responsibility to meet the street – that is, operating at the human scale where humans interact with them, regardless of their ultimate size.”
Importance of tall buildings Beyond their sheer height, tall buildings are important also. Tall buildings push the limits of engineering so that it can solve problems for the rest of the built environment. According to Mr Safarik, “Skyscrapers are some of the most heavily engineered structures on the planet. The metaphor we use is that skyscrapers are like the space programme. There was no immediate commercial justification for putting a man on the moon or a rover on mars, but what we learned from those experiences. It’s not just about the makeup of our galaxy, but how our technologies can perform in all kinds of extreme conditions is very valuable, scientifically and commercially.” Evolution of the concept of tall buildings The most essential real estate concern is how to maximise profit on a land, and the answer is “go higher.” To do that, innovations like the steel frame, the elevator, and the bundled tube were invented. If Wright showed the way how a tall building can be built, Fazlur Khan took it to a new level. Khan, the engineering genius from Skidmore Owings and Merrill, invented a new way of building tall. In the middle ages, masonry structures continuingly fell short to reach the height of European cathedrals: both the practicalities of hauling stone skywards with only wooden winding gear and wooden scaffolding. In the late 19th century, we saw the steel-framed buildings, but Fazlur Khan created the unconventional concept — bundled tube. He reversed the logic of the steel frame, making building’s external envelope – given enough trussing, framing and bracing – the structure itself. The “bundled tube” concept gave a new look to the skyscrapers which started looking more like a sculpture. And it was Khan’s revolutionary idea that makes world’s tallest building — Burj Khalifa — a reality. According to Mr Safarik, “The Burj Khalifa does represent a very small group of super- and mega-tall buildings, whose primary purpose is to achieve height for ‘its own sake’.”
Tall building trends in India “The trend about tall buildings is gaining traction in urban India,” echoes Somasundaram Senthilkumar, Business Head - Projects, Architectural Division, Asahi India Glass Ltd. “With the increasing population and demand for accommodation, space has become a commodity these days. Due to high land prices, construction costs and unavailability of land, people opt for high-rise buildings.” A few years back, Mumbai was the only city in India with high-rise buildings. It still continues to see the highest demand for tall buildings as the only option to grow there is vertically. However, other Indian cities will also see various similar projects in the future. The demand for skyscrapers is certainly growing in India since they are efficient with respect to land use, serve many people simultaneously from single set of infrastructure and service and provide more space. However, Kamlesh Choudhari and Jawahar Hemrajani, Directors, Glass Wall Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd., believes that India needs to get its own standards in construction to make a sustainable, low-cost or high-cost project. They also share the importance of sustainability. “Tall buildings in urban India are a key to provide insights on how to re-make existing cities in a sustainable way,” they added. “Advancement in technologies and increasing population will help keep the cities limited into its geographical location accompanied with required infrastructure.” Future of tall buildings in India India is competing with China in terms of urbanisation, but India still has much more urbanising left to do. According to the UN Population Fund, India is only 29 per cent urbanised while China has hit 42 per cent. As far as the future is concerned, as India not only urbanises but rises as an economic power, we will see not only more tall buildings, but better designed and constructed ones, because the Indian economy will be too large to ignore. India is on its way to be stitched into the global business world, which relies on transparency and data to function. n

and is a commodity today. Land is scarce and doesn’t come cheap. In this scenario, going vertical seems a reasonable solution, and glass is an essential part of design of a tall building in modern day architecture. Glass is one material that is aesthetically sound, ecofriendly and economically viable. In an exclusive conversation with ACE Update, Somasundaram Senthilkumar talks about the opportunities in tall buildings segment, and how Asahi is tapping those opportunities. Trend about tall buildings in India The trend about tall buildings is gaining traction in urban India. With the increasing population and demand for accommodation, space has become a commodity these days. Due to high land prices, construction costs and unavailability of land, people opt for high-rise buildings. A few years back, Mumbai was the only city in India with highrise buildings. Essential Asahi products Glass is an essential part of design of a tall building in modern day architecture. Apart from its aesthetical value, glass facades in a building exterior should also fulfil basic criteria like protection against fire, forced intrusion and climatic influence. Construction of these buildings requires

structural systems to withstand high wind loads as near high-rise buildings. Glass failure can occur because of impact (localised contact with a force which can overcome the strength of the glass) or thermal stress (when the centre of the glass is heated by the sun and the edges remain cool, the centre of the glass expands but is restricted from natural expansion by the cool edges. This results in stress within the glass that could cause thermal breakage). Also, high-rise buildings absorb direct solar heat and reflected solar radiation of surrounding low-rise buildings and convert it into heat via convection of long wave radiation. However, when buildings are of different heights, the walls of the higher buildings absorb part of the reflected and emitted radiation and block a portion of the sky, resulting in reduced solar exposure and long-wave emission from the roofs of the lower buildings. Asahi has a wide portfolio of glass products and solutions which are necessary for facades. Tempered and toughened glass: Glass is strong to compressive forces and weak against tensile stresses. Toughening is a process which makes the glass invulnerable to tensile stresses too, by imparting strength to the glass that makes it 4-5 times stronger than normal annealed glasses. The process involves slow heating the glass in tempering furnaces, up 680 C, which happens to be the softening point of glass and then rapidly cooling it by blowing air on either side at room temperature. This causes the surface of the glass to harden. A stable compressive

stress layer is formed which makes the glass nearly unbreakable and 4-5 times stronger than normal annealed glasses. In the event of breakage, tempered glass breaks into small, relatively blunt glass fragments. The brand name of tempered glass by Asahi is AIS Stronglas. Laminated glass: Laminated glass is safety glass that has been manufactured by adhering two or more sheets of glass together with a flexible PVB interlayer. The bond between the glass and interlayer can absorb accidental human impact. Even if the glass breaks, the fragments adhere to the interlayer thus minimising injury. Laminated glass offers greater protection for people and property by providing an effective barrier when under attack. Also, laminated glasses have excellent sound insulation properties. The range of specialised laminated glass from Asahi includes Valuglas (heatstrengthened laminated glass with 1.14-mm PVB interlayer), Securityglas (intrusionresistant laminated glass with 1.52-mm PVB
interlayer), Securityplus (Dupont Sentry Glass interlayer makes it 5 times stronger and 100 times stiffer than conventional laminating materials) and Acousticglas (noise-cancelling glass). Reflective glass (high-performance glass): A metallic coating is applied to one side of the glass to significantly increase the ability of the glass to reflect both the visible and infrared (light and heat) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Reflective glass — also known as solar control glass — reduces heat gain and glare from the exterior and allows optimum visible light transmission to the interior. It facilitates energy savings through reduction in interior solar heat gain and cost reduction in the cost of heating and cooling systems. It also improves occupants comfort as interior temperature variations are less and easier to control and it reduces the air- conditioning load of the buildings. Asahi offers a wide portfolio of high-performance glasses. The hard coat range includes AIS Opal which is available in 5 vibrant shades. The soft coat range Ecosense, the green standard in glass, comes in three categories: Enhance (solar control), Exceed (solar control low-E) and Essence (low-E) highperformance glasses. Ideal for solar and thermal insulating parameters, Ecosense combines aesthetics with environmental sensibility and conforms to all international and national green standards, making it the natural choice as a green building solution. Opportunities in tall buildings segment Due to its fragile nature, the use of glass to bring natural light into buildings was earlier restricted only to windows and other small installations. But due to the development of new construction techniques and glass production methods, the inner strength of this material is being revealed, and it is now considered a viable choice for more complex structural requirements.

The architects and engineers would like buildings to be well crafted. Markets are growing as more architect-artist converting to architectengineers realise the need for laboratory tested materials certified to be installed as per building requirement. New trends that keep industry moving In India, construction with heavy envelope has demanded most of the history of architecture with brick masonry which is now regarded as traditional, being dependent on single material for strength, water tightness and thermal protection whose shortcomings in regard to load-bearing capacity and protection against heat or moisture were compensated by wall

The slow learning with weaknesses of these systems, together with industrialisation and the great diversity of materials existing at the present time has fostered the evolution towards technically more developed systems. With emerging technologies, architects and consultants are evolving innovative design options with materials with adaptive technologies such as metal like bronze, cast aluminium, cast iron, expanded metal, embossed copper, glass for variable light transmittance processed as laminated and DGU, composites like aluminium composites, copper asphalt composites, stone as granite, ceramic tiles, terracotta, sand stone and marble along with other suitable materials to create a façade with sustainable solution with a variety of system solutions driven by its performance and cost. In terms of visibility, through glass makes a resident feel connected with outside area. With integrated windows, unitised curtain walls are a latest trend in skyscrapers. All construction activities on a skyscraper are pre-engineered and tested at high standards. There is a need for India to get its own standards in construction to make a sustainable, low-cost or high cost projects. Currently, Glass Wall Systems has created a dumping ground by importing poor and rejected materials. Essential Glass Wall Systems products Being the interface between the interior space and the exterior environment, façades play a crucial role in heat and light exchange. Its performance in that role affects the occupants’ comfort and productivity. Achieving high-
performance without escalating costs always remains as the foremost need. Energy use and running costs where the double skin facades play a vital role remains a challenge on highrise buildings. The double skin largely helps solar control but permits the use of clear glass to a large extent making the most in terms of connectivity with the exterior environment. The trend of using this system seems to be gaining pace. Glass Wall and tall buildings The construction industry as a whole is a dynamic one. Each construction project is unique in its process, scope of work and goals. Due to this, one needs to analyse the project before coming up with solutions suited to the project to achieve the desired time for completion. Therefore, Glass Wall Systems as a company has always been open to change and has maintained its focus on providing solutions in the best interest of the project along with ensuring timely completion. Project execution in today’s day with the uncertainty in this field is of utmost importance, and Glass Wall systems takes pride in having the same as its forte. n

Construction chemicals II Tall Buildings Tall building trends India Currently tall buildings are perceived as a premium segment. But with increasing purchasing power and subsequent rise in land cost, settling in a low-rise building becomes more expensive. The investment on the support infrastructure for a city to grow horizontally is much higher and therefore the planning and development authorities in India are looking to grow vertically. Presently Mumbai and the National Capital Region (NCR) are growing vertically, and this trend will soon be followed in other metros as well. Essential BASF products BASF offers an array of products and solutions which meets global standards and are used to reduce the amount of resources needed for construction and contribute to greater living comfort. For example, BASF products reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector by increasing the energy efficiency of the construction process (supplementary cementitious materials as substitutes for
cement clinker), by reducing the energy demand of buildings (a broad portfolio of insulating materials) and by extending the service life of buildings (e.g. repair mortars). BASF’s low-VOC dispersions used as raw materials in adhesives, coatings and sealants as well as those formulated products themselves, reduce indoor emissions in buildings, contributing to comfort and health. Its Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) not only provide outstanding insulation values, but also are lightweight and eliminate the need to transport heavy brick and stone. Its research and development activities aim to continuously optimise the technical and sustainability performance of its products and the processes in which they are used. BASF and tall buildings BASF has a strong sales team across the country. The company undertakes regular interactions with developers, architects and consultants to offer unique solutions. Its global presence and experience makes BASF a formidable supplier whom customers rely on. BASF offers solutions for every construction
requirement — right from making basements watertight to making the roof leak proof. The admixtures required for pumping concrete to a height of more than 100 metres is a unique challenge for developers, but its success in helping regional and global projects such as Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and Shanghai Tower in tackling the various construction challenges makes BASF a partner of choice. Burj Khalifa, at 828 metres, is the world’s tallest building. It is an engineering masterpiece, designed to withstand both immense pressure and extreme climatic conditions. BASF’s MasterGlenium SKY concrete admixture was key to meeting these demands, making it possible to pump the concrete, without interruption, to a height of up to 600 metres. The admixture prevents the concrete components from separating despite the high pressure used during pumping. The early strength acquired with each storey allowed building to progress rapidly, completing two storeys per week instead of the one story per week which is standard in Dubai. n

aterproofing is now becoming an essential element in the construction industry. With new scientific technologies, waterproofing market is set to prosper. In a conversation with ACE Update, Sanjay Bahadur discusses about the waterproofing market in India.
Construction chemicals market has a huge growth potential due to the recent construction and manufacturing boom in India. Many newly developed products give better performance and results and hence there will be a shift in demand towards better performance products.
Current status Waterproofing has been an area of concern for customers; therefore, companies are coming up with more effective scientific solutions. The acceptance of scientific waterproofing solutions is also growing from the customers’ side of acceptance. Traditional waterproofing has a lot of limitations, as compared to newly offered scientific solutions. Traditional waterproofing is not long lasting and develops cracks easily and gets removed quickly, so all these require a more scientific waterproofing systems. The acceptance for scientific solutions has just started. Ninety per cent of the time, product doesn’t fail but applications fail because of the lack of detailing. Hence, there is a definite need for training. Also, knowledge about right accessories is essential.
Solutions for tall buildings Pidilite has a range of solutions for each type of segments — whether it is for tall buildings or commercial buildings or retails. There has been a lot of thought processes combined with uninterrupted R&D that have helped Pidilite strengthen the overall brand equity of its mother brand, Dr. Fixit. Pidilite offers a comprehensive range of waterproofing products and has managed to establish itself as a preferred brand in this category.
Upcoming trends Waterproofing market in India is at a very premature state. As the bulk of the construction sites use traditional methods like brick bat coba and mud puska which have their own limitations. Hence, huge opportunities exist here. There is an urgency to inculcate the right material usage, right dosage and the correct application to ensure that we create healthy structures.

Interview II Paints
Demand helping paint industry surging “IPCA as an association is not trying to market or promote the companies as such, but we have a good system of organising events, conferences and seminars,” says Sanjeev Gupta, President, Indian Paint and Coating Association
I
ndian Paint & Coating Association (IPCA) is an amalgam of paint, ink and powder coating manufacturers, raw material manufacturers and traders, machinery manufacturers and allied industries. The association represents about 1,000 members of both the organised and unorganised sector in the paint and coating industry. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Sanjeev Gupta talks about the future of paints and coating industry and how IPCA is playing its role to promote the industry. Is the paints and coatings market growing, stagnant or in the declining phase? In spite of the slowdown in the economy, we can say that the paint industry is definitely growing. In context of small- and mediumscale segments, we can say that they are not growing as the scale of demand is growing because the main segments of the market has been captured by larger units owing to their policies regarding pricing and other factors. So the paint industry is definitely growing because the demand is growing. There is more demand in the economy in terms of industrial production and domestic consumption, but the medium- and small-scale units have to devise strategies to beat slowdown and increase their market share.
What are the key growing segments in this industry, and where does the architectural products segment stand? The key growing segments are both industrial and domestic. And the architectural products segment is directly related to the real estate as well as the growth in the manufacturing industry. Because these two sectors had slowed down considerably over a period of time, that segment isn’t growing fast but has got a lot of potential and scope. We believe that with the growth of manufacturing sector and the demand in housing and real estate, the architectural products segment is bound to go up. What are the key drivers and restraints prevailing currently? How will they dictate industry structure in coming years? The key driver for any industry is obviously demand, and the demand comes when the whole economy is in a growing stage. Though India is a developing country, because of the policy paralysis of the past 10-12 years, it has not been growing at the pace that it should have grown. That, coupled with the tremendous amount of corruption and scams, has definitely derailed our economy. Those are the kind of
restraints that we are talking about and the fact that the tax structure and the policies of the government is not industry friendly. If some key initiatives are taken in terms of tax reforms, labour reforms and general the impediments towards the growth of industry or the clearances removed, we definitely believe that the way forward is growth only. In order to strengthen the paint and coating industry, what kind of policy reform do you expect from the new government? The current government is working actively to bring the GST — a new form of indirect taxation which promises to revolutionise the whole tax structure of the country. India can become one market; presently it is very fragmented. Different states have different rate of taxes for different products. There are lot of barriers when you send one material form one state to another. There is a lot of red tape involved. When GST comes it will be one tax for the whole country which would be administered by the central and state governments together, and the rates of taxation would also be similar everywhere. It would be a big push for the industry. n

all buildings, which can be criticised as pinnacle of vanity, are important to urbanise the world. Tall buildings can also be a part of the solution to global climate change. The council also promotes tall buildings that are innovative and advance the typology, through its publications and award symposiums. well-engineered structure. Wind engineering takes on a particular importance with tall buildings, as wind speeds increase with height, and the height-to-width ratio of a building becomes more of a factor. And all buildings have a responsibility to meet the street – that is, operating at the human scale where humans interact with them, regardless of their ultimate size. It is where tall buildings are largely deficient, but we are beginning to see attempts to address that, and this is where we focus our energies. From steel-framed buildings in the late 19th century to Fazlur Khan’s “bundled tube” concept and Burj Khalifa’s technomysticism, how has the concept of tall buildings evolved? The first two examples you cite are pragmatic responses to the essential real estate concern — how to maximise profit on a land. The answer was “go higher.” To do that, innovations like the steel frame, the elevator, and the bundled tube were necessary.
Interview II Tall Buildings Your choice of describing Burj Khalifa as an instance of “techno-mysticism is interesting. The Burj Khalifa does represent a very small group of super- and megatall buildings whose primary purpose is to achieve height for “its own sake. I don’t think it’s necessary or useful to place a judgement on which is better. The financial pro forma for a building like the Burj probably does not make sense if we only consider the building itself. When we consider that its developers also owned land around the Burj and could construct more ordinary buildings at a lower cost, or sell this land off to other developers who would then advertise that their projects are “near the famous Burj, there is indeed an economic justification for doing so. These buildings are important also, beyond their sheer height, because they push the limits of engineering so that it can solve problems for the rest of the built environment. Skyscrapers are some of the most heavily
engineered structures on the planet. The metaphor we use is that skyscrapers are like the space programme. There was no immediate commercial justification for putting a man on the moon or a rover on mars, but what we learned from those experiences. It’s not just about the makeup of our galaxy, but how our technologies can perform in all kinds of extreme conditions is very valuable, scientifically and commercially. Indeed, there is a bit of “techno-mysticism around megatall towers like Shanghai Tower and the Burj. These are impressive achievement, and they answer the question, “Can it be done? But what is most important is that they ask the question, “What else can we do with the knowledge we have gained? “The World’s Tallest Building by CTBUH is widely considered to be an authority on the official height of tall buildings. What are the most important criteria you look upon to enlist a building in your rankings? “The World’s Tallest Building was
developed because there were an increasing number of competing claims about the height of buildings that were close enough in height, and a decision could not be made simply with the naked eye. There were no criteria in place for the point from which the height was measured. That is what we set out to do. Our three basic criteria are “height to tip, “height to architectural top and “highest occupied floor. The “height to architectural top determines the world’s tallest title. Our height criteria have occasionally been adjusted to reflect changes in the typology and continue to be a subject of debate. The idea behind making “architectural top the determinant of the ultimate ranking has to do with the permanence of the design intent and the fact that this is the most obvious form-giving characteristic of the building when viewed from outside and against other buildings. The “tip could include objects that may change or be removed over time, such as antennae

and warning lights. Many buildings do not have flat roofs but extend into sculptural points far beyond their highest occupied floor. CTBUH has a number of working groups to produce a relevant technical guide or other tangible output for tall buildings. How do the groups help in planning, design, construction, and management of tall buildings? Our working group participants report that participation in the groups lead back to improvements in their working methods in their companies and increased business from clients who perceive them as experts. Like many professional associations, CTBUH provides a framework to formalise informal professional and academic discussions among colleagues from different companies, countries and disciplines. Most participants are leaders in their respective fields and extremely busy with commercial work but recognise that there can be no moving forward in development of technologies and methods as an industry if we only repeat the same low-risk practices and don’t try to solve persistent problems. What is your opinion about the future of tall buildings in India? Can India compete with emerging countries like China? On a fundamental economic basis, India is already competing with China in terms of population growth and in particular, urbanisation. According to the UN Population Fund, India is only 29 per cent
34
DECEMBER 2014
urbanised while China has hit 42 per cent. So India still has much more urbanising left to do. We would like to gain more knowledge about the activities in India. Currently, there is a good deal of opacity of information coming out of India, so it is difficult for us to determine statistics at the same level of depth that we do in other highly active countries. Therefore, comparison is not possible at the empirical level as we would like to. As far as the future is concerned, as India not only urbanises but rises as an economic power, we will see not only more tall buildings but better designed and constructed ones and a higher level of transparency and information about them because the Indian economy will be too large to ignore, and it will be stitched into the global business world, which relies on transparency and data to function. How is CTBUH playing its role in promoting tall buildings around the world? I think it is an oversimplification to say that CTBUH is “promoting tall buildings around the world”, because it leaves out the dimension of quality. The tall building is not an optimum solution for every situation where shelter needs to be built. And, many tall buildings are of poor quality, have a standoffish relationship with the cities they inhabit and consume huge quantities of energy. At the same time, we believe that tall buildings are both inevitable in an

urbanising world and can be part of the solution to global climate change and the poor living conditions. We promote tall buildings that are innovative and advance the typology, through our Web and print publications as well as through programmes like just concluded 2014 Awards, in which we awarded One Central Park of Sydney “best tall building worldwide.” Although this — and many of the buildings we have awarded in the past — is by no means the tallest in any jurisdiction; it is one of the most important. It uses its height to do positive things for the environment which can’t be done in shorter buildings like reflecting light into multiple areas depending on when it is needed and to grow massive amounts of vertical greenery that not only shade the building but help cool its microclimate and extend parkland into the sky. There is nothing inherently sustainable about a tall building by itself. With so much money and science go into tall buildings, their size means that when a tall building is deployed as a “good citizen” with respect to the environment — integrated, connected, efficient and a provider of public space that did not exist before — its status as a representation of the people’s values becomes important. That is what we try to promote through our conferences, working groups, awards programmes and publications. n
Interview II The Big Architect
India on its way to become tallest “We have the potential and the capabilities to do complete design, planning and execution within the country itself,” believes Parish Kapse, Partner and Director, Team One Architects
A
rchitects from India have the potential and capabilities to design, plan and execute tall buildings within the country itself, and Indian architects are doing that for international clients successfully. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Parish Kapse discusses why we should not raise questions on India’s potential to build tall buildings. When designing tall buildings, what are the aspects you keep in mind to make it energy efficient as well as eco-friendly? We definitely have to say that tall buildings can’t be energy efficient. At the same time, when you build a tall building, there are many parameters which can help us minimise the cost and the impact on the environment. Tall buildings are generally not at all energy efficient and eco-friendly, and there are a lot of expectations for executing tall buildings in terms of structure, services, low-voltage systems and other parameters. We can use highly efficient gear less or machine room less elevators while planning for tall buildings. This helps in saving of energy. In such buildings, especially commercial buildings, there is a lot of vertical traffic. That’s why traffic planning, floor-wise segmentation and appropriate vertical lift management need to be done too. What is India’s potential when it comes to construct tall buildings? India has got a fantastic potential to build tall buildings. The Indian developers, architects, structural designers and MEP designers are supporting clients internationally to design and build tall buildings. Architects from India are building tall buildings for international clients successfully. We have the potential and
capabilities to do complete design, planning and execution within the country itself. There is no question of India’s potential to build tall buildings in India. Since going vertical is the only option in cities like Mumbai, what type of designs inspires you when designing tall structures? There are a lot of new ideas which have come across the internal planning as well as the external scheme planning. The bylaws, which are applicable to such high-rise buildings in India, are very stringent. Right from the high-rise building committee, which gives the approval to such kind of buildings to getting the fire and traffic NOCs, there are tremendous challenges to building tall buildings in metro cities like Mumbai. There is no option rather than going vertical. Architects have been using very strong elements in terms of external facades, weather shades, external void masses and external finishing glasses which help deliver inspiring structures. What are the challenges an Indian architect faces when constructing tall buildings? We define a tall building or a high-rise building as any building which is more than 70 metres or more than 24 storeys. All buildings more than 24 storeys have to go through a complete sanction process from the authorities like fire and traffic. One is the bylaws, and second is the cost. The CAPEX and OPEX costs of two 30-storey towers would be cheaper than a 60-storey tower due to the structure, the services and finishing works. We also need to say that cost is one of the biggest challenges that an architect would face as the person will spend extra only for a real passion. Constructing high-rise buildings
in India is very difficult unless built by perceived passion. How do you or your firm contribute towards tall buildings? In India, we as an architect would always implement smarter ideas to make a building more energy efficient by having rightful technologies to build smart, faster, rightful orientations of the building openings, glasses to prevent the daylight glares and weather shading modelling. Designing the building orientation, as to have lesser intake of the sun during the day, is one of the planning parameters. Second is orientation of the building, and third is service design as there are a lot of nonconventional methodologies which will make it highly energy efficient. We, at Team One Architects, have put all our efforts to get the best technology under one roof. We try to search the best parameters and give back to the society in a practical, cost-effective manner — be it the services or materials. What are the current projects you have been working on? We are working on couple of architectural projects. We are working on the headquarters for MMRDA at BKC Mumbai and Bombay Stock Exchange. Also, we are working for the corporate headquarters for ONGC in Uran, Mumbai, a hospital in Kharghar for CIDCO and headquarter for the Hinjewadi Industries Association in Pune. What would be your dream project? We are looking forward to building an iconic, landmark monument project in the sea now. It’s an architect’s delight to build a monument in the sea. This is one of our dream projects, and we have already contributed heavily to build this dream project in the sea. n

bC India: the showstopper bC India, only in its third edition, has transformed itself into “the show” for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines and construction vehicles
b
C India — the international trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines and construction vehicles — is going to take place from December 15 to 18, 2014, at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida. The expo will take up 120,000 sq. metres of exhibition — same size as the last bC India. Looking back bC India 2013 — took place in Mumbai — attracted a total of 710 companies from 33 countries and more than 28,000 trade visitors. After the two successful events in Mumbai, bC India is moving to north for this year’s extravaganza. Among the 710 exhibitors, 61 per cent were international exhibitors. This made the

show to feature nine national pavilions — China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. The show not only attracted high-quality visitors but also provided a global platform for doing business. Although there is a doubt on choosing Greater Noida, where no large construction equipment exhibition has taken part, Igor Palka, CEO, bC Expo India Pvt. Ltd., claims that many companies have welcomed the move to North India. “The short distance to Greater Noida, where the show will happen at one of the most modern exhibition centres in India, will attract new potential clients, governmental representatives and new decision makers,” remarks Mr Palka.

“This will result in a win-win situation for all our exhibitors and visitors.” Influence on the industry India is modified. The nation has started to think bigger, dream bigger, plan bigger and act bigger. If the present sentiment continues, India would become one of the most dynamic markets for the global construction machinery industry. Backhoe loaders, bulldozers and mobile cranes are the top selling machineries in India in recent years. However, it is expected that sales in backhoe loaders, which accounted for over 50 per cent of all construction machineries sold in 2012, will lose its ground. Crawler-excavators seem to increase their market share. These both
Cover Story II BC India are expected to account for a good third of the Indian construction machinery market in 2016. Mr Palka says, “Looking at the current Five-Year Plan and the huge planned infrastructure investments, I am convinced that the situation in the CE market will improve in the next year.” Mr Palka adds, “Having our show in December, we are happy to offer the companies the best platform to show their newest products to an international audience. Hence, bC India is the perfect marketing opportunity for our exhibitors at the early stage of an economic upswing.” “With the new government in place,” remarks Tushar Mehendale, Managing Director, ElectroMech Material Handling Systems (Ind) Pvt. Ltd. “the renewed push to infrastructure projects and other related areas is expected to inject vigour into the construction equipment market. In turn, this should drive other sectors and kickstart the economy as well.” Even Nischal Mehrotra, Director - Sales and Service, LiuGong India Pvt. Ltd., shares the same feelings. “The recent outlook of the industry looks promising,” he points out. “The government initiatives towards infrastructural development, port projects and ‘Make in India’ mission have has shown a positive sign for the future. The move is likely to spur demand of the ECE equipment. If all the projects are implemented, the industry full potential is realised.” And BAUMA CONEXPO SHOW – bC India is “the important meeting place” for the construction, infrastructure and mining sector. Industry expectation B. Sridhar, Business Head, SDLG Products feels the response to bC India 2014 would be that much, especially from the south India. However, he is confident that the show will leave its mark. “bC India is the place for customers to enhance their knowledge about different products that will be displayed there,” he opines. Mr Mehendale is excited and looking
forward to bC India. He feels that the event is rightly timed when the infrastructure construction industry is expected to pick up. “With new stable government in the centre,” he states, “ElectroMech expect the policy paralysis to end and the government to take important policy decisions around infrastructure development.” He adds, “Tradeshows like bC India give companies a platform to reach to their target audience in a short time and efficiently. In the light of renewed interest on India and recent investment commitments from countries like Japan, China and the United States, ElectroMech expects to see a healthy footfall at the expo.” Supporting programmes For the first time, as per the organiser, there will be a matchmaking programme for all participants in bC India. With this tool visitors can not only preview which companies are exhibiting at the show, but also book meetings with them in advance and make contact with other participants. The organisers are not leaving any stone unturned to make bC India is the mustattend event for the industry. The show will accompany several supporting conferences on technical themes. iCEMA is organising the “Conference on Infrastructure Equipment – Re-scripting the Growth Story” on Tuesday, December 16, at the Banquet Hall of the India Expo Mart. ElectroMech expects a healthy footfall “ElectroMech is looking forward to bC India, which seems to be timed just when the infrastructure construction industry is expected to pick up.” - Tushar Mehendale, Managing Director, ElectroMech Material Handling Systems (Ind) Pvt. Ltd. Recent industry trends The past few years have seen the industrial cranes market stagnate due to several factors, driven by an inefficient government at the centre. Looking ahead, the Indian economy looks to be on the path to recovery. ElectroMech is seeing an increase in the levels of enquiries from different industry sectors. The previously dormant infrastructure and construction industry is now waking up, and “quick delivery” orders are becoming a norm once again. With the new government in place, the renewed push to infrastructure projects and other related areas is expected to inject vigour into the construction equipment market. In turn, this should drive other sectors and kick-start the economy as well. Demand is expected to rise as there will be a huge pent-up demand for cranes from various sectors. Growth of various sectors — such as power, infrastructure, construction and heavy engineering — will directly and indirectly drive the growth of the Indian cranes industry. Since these industries require a variety of cranes for their material lifting needs, these industries will keep driving the demand for cranes as well as create scope for product innovations in the crane industry. The crane industry, in turn, will keep on expanding and innovating to meet to the changing requirements of the evolving industries. Residential and commercial projects are also expected to continue to drive the demand for Tower Cranes. Since high rises are becoming a norm not only in metros but also in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, the

MFE to showcase ‘Make to Order’ aluminium formwork “Unlike others, our main focus is only in one category of formwork.”
- Ketan Shah, Managing Director, MFE Formwork Technology India
Recent industry trends After a slowdown for the past couple of years, things are now looking good for construction industry. New the government has ambitious plan to construct 100 smart cities and provide house to all by 2022. Recently requirement of FDI in housing sector has been diluted. Land acquisition rules are under review. After plunging under 5 per cent, GDP growth is also set to rise. All these will start giving results from nest financial year. Formwork industry is core component of construction industry. Majority projects use traditional formwork; however, “Make to Order” aluminium formwork segment is on uptrend in the recent years. Contractors and developers have understood advantages of using this
technology to achieve speed, quality and economy. Slowly and steadily, it is replacing traditional formwork, especially in largescale projects. Expectation from bC India BC India is probably most successful exhibition. It attracts a lot of users from all corners of India. MFE already has strong presence in metro cities of North, West and South India. However, there could be potential users from Tier-II and -III cities who are not aware of this technology or may have impression that this technology is costly which is actually not. MFE is also hoping to get enquiries from North-East and East India where the company doesn’t have many projects. Key attraction at MFE stall In 2010, MFE has installed stir friction welding machines in its factory. It is mainly used in aerospace, oil and gas, ship building, railway fabrication and many other fabrication processes where high-quality welding is required. FSW is the joining of solid state pieces, i.e. the metal is not melted. Damage to original material is hardly 25 per cent of damage caused by ARC welding. Display of panels manufactured with stir friction welding technology will be a key attraction.
Products to be showcased “Make to Order” aluminium formwork is what MFE is going to showcase. The company is market leader in this segment. Unlike others, its main focus is only in one category of formwork. One can measure the success from the fact that aluminium formwork is known as “Mivan Formwork”, which was its company name before 2007. Some of the companies are selling their formworks as “Mivan Formwork”. This exhibition will give MFE an opportunity to create awareness that MFE Formwork is original manufacturer of “Mivan Formwork”. New product launch MFE is supplying two levels of manually handled working platform brackets for erection and dismantling of formwork on external side of building. They are being used successfully till date. However, norms for safety have become very stringent, especially for above 40-storey towers. MFE is currently developing three-level hydraulically operated working platform system. The platform will cover full height and little more above working level unlike manually operated brackets, which did not covered full height. MFE isn’t able to launch the event as it is in trail. However, it will be launched in the first quarter of 2015.

ndia shares about one-sixth of the world’s total population but hasn’t achieved even 20 per cent of the housing and infrastructure needs. This clearly defines a significant potential that exists both in housing and infrastructure, waiting to be tapped. The ongoing political aggression that is pro-development presents an optimistic outlook that should enable a good number of projects and see their fruition in the near future. India is a price-sensitive market. Till date, monument marvels have been constructed here using the conventional methods without the use of advanced technology. The advent of technology with the right pricing is important. Only those global players which can understand the economic consciousness of this region and deliver both methods and machines that directly compliment the reduction of timelines and manpower would be able to play the current market pitch. Expectation from bC India BAUMA internationally stands tall as “the brand” and “the name” for construction exhibitions. Though, bC India has been scaling up its presence, and there is growing participation since the time of its inception in India. The expo still has a long way to go to achieve the international grace and the clout in the construction market as those of their international exhibition counterparts. bC India has to work on upping its media exposure with its hard and soft marketing campaigns to ensure a good footfall and the right people visiting the expo.

Tucson expects more meaningful discussions Hall & stall no. H7, A34
Expectation from bC India For bC India, the previous edition was a definite success, but there was a restraint from both the exhibitors and visitors. Several foreign companies are looking to indigenise their sourcing for locally assembled products, while some are even looking at India as a possible location for their global sourcing programmes. Hence, a lot of high-powered discussions is expected — quite a few deals being struck. With the previous year’s exhibition being held in Mumbai — the financial, cultural and possible the connectivity capital of India — Greater Noida is much harder to get to and only the most dedicated visitors and exhibitors would be present. Hopefully, more meaningful discussions would take place with more serious players in the industry. idhata Industries is one of the fastest growing makers of quality plywood and flush doors, with a range of products under its belt. In an interview with ACE Update, Vishal Juneja talks about the company’s performance, technological capabilities, and the doors market in India. Where do you see the doors market is heading to? Doors market is a substantial market now; it is a large market due to the jump in the housing sector. There are a lot of housing projects coming up. If we go by the conventional method of putting a door, you may require several months to complete this. When we come to the factory made doors which are made on technically strong, automatic machineries, we are able to deliver larger quantities with top of the line quality. We are a company that uses globally accepted technology like Extra Compression Systems – ECS and Dual Temperature Pressing - DTP. If you make a door with these technologies, you can deliver quickly and with superior quality, and promise strength and longest life that any other product on the market. Definitely, the market is expanding and it will grow further. How is the trend in the doors market in India? Value addition is going to come into play. Earlier, we used to make plain doors although we manufacture a complete range of plywood which is of superior quality and one can use in the residential or other projects. We are the only company in India

which uses three global technologies: Extra Compression Systems, Dual Temperature Pressing, and Surface Levelling Cipher, all under one roof. Our manufacturing plant is also the largest plywood plant in the North India. The latest trend is the value addition in these product lines for varied applications. If you want one top line company to deliver your all interior product needs, be it plywood, be it veneers, be it doors such as Laminated Door, Veneered Door, Grooved Doors, Fire Rated doors, “InterWood” is your obvious and best choice. What are your key products? Apart from 10 ranges of plywood offered under InterWood brand, we have now also launched fire-rated doors and fireretardant plywood. Fire-rated door blocks the fire rating for 120 minutes and doesn’t even allow the smoke to come to the other side of the door. The door has been rated at 1,100 degrees for 120 minutes and tested actively at India Plywood Research and Training Institute in Bangalore which is a government-run organisation. We have launched in consideration of safety conscious buyers looking for top line quality. The demand for these ranges is growing rapidly and no other maker can offer quality proposition as strong as ours. To complete our range, we have also launched veneers and laminates. quality parameter which promise utmost strength, quality and life to our entire range. It is G43 and G48 grade of wood. It is technically superior and offers better termite resistance, more flexibility, and longevity. The majority of the raw material is available in North India nearer to our plant in Punjab. Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are very fertile for this production of wood. Where do you see your company growing in the coming years? It will massively grow. We are the fastest growing plywood company in the company and expanding 360 degrees. We see ourselves in top 3 plywood makers in the country. The plant has huge capacities and the professional management in place is taking the brand InterWood places. We are currently present in 16 states of the country and are growing for Pan India brand presence. As the economy develops, people will buy more homes. More houses means more doors will be needed and bring more value-added products in the market. With the machinery coming into play, the old style of carpentry is changing. With new technology, you get better technology and better plywood and offers value for money. Currently, we have a scheduled production capacity of about 36 million square feet per annum. We have already completed Phase 1 and are currently working on Phase 2. We are seeing robust growth. Tata TISCON Fe600 rebars with their unique strength and ductility combination offer unique potential for engineers and designers to give shape to economical, sleek and future ready structures using reinforced concrete
Tata Steel: a saga of continuous innovation and nation building T
raditionally, the per capita consumption of steel in India has always been low. Added to this, low consumer involvement and a plethora of players in the market resulted in a highly commoditised market with price being the primary consideration for purchase. Tata Steel broke through the clutter in the construction sector with its rebar flagship brand – Tata Tiscon, a product of state-of-the-art technology. With a rich steelmaking and nation-building legacy of over 100 years, Tata Steel has always been a pioneer and change leader. The company has worked continuously to strengthen its processes, product offerings and services in its quest for innovation and value-creation. Tata Steel is the first steel company outside Japan to have won the coveted Deming Prize for Excellence in Total Quality Management. Tiscon Fe600 offers 20 per cent higher Yield Strength (YS) than Fe500 grade rebar with similar ductility as TISCON Fe500D grade. While YS denotes ‘design’ strength of rebar, UTS/YS ratio and percent elongation are important properties in a rebar that reflect its ductility characteristics. Tata Tiscon Fe600 rebars are suitably microalloyed resulting into excellent ductility along with superior strength. The other undesirable impurities (like Sulphur and Phosphorus) that impair the overall longevity of rebars when used inside structures are also maintained at lower level than specified limits. Applications Tata Tiscon Fe600 rebars, with their dual
advantages of enhanced strength and superior ductility, are suitable to be used as reinforcement for commercial, housing, industrial, utilities, infra, MRTS and other reinforced concrete applications, including: • Buildings (piles, pile caps, foundations, columns, beams) • Bridges (piers, girders, decks) • UG walls in MRTS stations • Retaining walls, marine facilities (docks, piers) • Grade separators and viaducts (piers, box-girders) • Precast reinforced concrete members. Availability Tata TISCON Fe600 rebars with their unique strength and ductility combination offer unique potential for engineers and designers to give shape to economical, sleek and future ready structures using reinforced concrete. It is available in the following sizes: 16 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 28 mm, 32 mm, 36 mm and 40 mm. n

In case of window frame (wooden/uPVC/ metal), installation may eliminate use of sub-frame and marble/granite stone frame – thus there is no seepage of water. It assures air tightness and becomes expansion proof bond between masonry wall and frame. For aesthetic value, one can use marble/granite inside the window on the bottom edge or entire frame after insulating profile with IPF MULTIFOAM PRO. Re-discovering cities for a sustainable living environment
T
he world’s urban population has grown from 220 million to almost three billion in this century alone and UN forecasts show that in 2050, more than 70 per cent of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. In India, the percentage of population living in urban areas has increased from 28.6 per cent in 2001 to 37.7 per cent in 2011. Urban centres provide vast scope for employment in industries, transport, trade and other sectors. They also offer modern facilities of life. Thus, they act as ‘magnets’ for the migrant population and attract people from outside. However, developing nations are struggling to cope up with rapid urbanization which is seriously outstripping the capacity of most cities to provide adequate services for their citizens. As per Indian Prime Minister’s initiative to build smart cities and improve the character of urban areas, amidst a global call for sustainable development, it becomes imperative to bring together
issues related to cities under one roof and deliberate upon them to gear up for the future. School of Architecture, MM University (Ambala) and Indian Institute of Architects (Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter) are going to organise a national conference on “re-discovering cities for a sustainable living environment”. The aim of the conference is to have a dialogue for creating urban environments that provide healthy socio-economic and environmental conditions for their residents. Authors are invited to submit proposals for the papers under three distinct streams: historic cities, cities of 19th and 20th century, and cities of the future. n For more details, visit www. ncrcmmu.org .
