It gives me immense pleasure to present you the first issue of the fourth volume of ACE Update. This February 2014 issue is a milestone as we are celebrating its 3rd anniversary. Continuing with the dreams and inspirations, ACE Update brings you this anniversary special issue on ‘My Dream Project’. The issue features dream projects of leading architects, urban planners, EPC players and developers. We are proud to offer the readers the excellence of a diverse range of projects including railways, roads and bridges, transport, marine, healthcare, tourism, education, airport and terminals. Connecting J&K valley with rest of the country remains a challenge for years. However, with the advent of state-of-the-art technologies, the civil engineering has strengthened its foothold everywhere. Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel, one of the challenging, marvellous projects in Indian civil engineering history, is one of the latest examples. Arun Karambelkar, President and Wholetime Director from HCC highlighted the socio-economic importance of this project. Also, the four lane of the section between Jammu bypass and Udhampur has reduced the travelling time to just 45 minutes from the earlier two-and-a-half hour drive. K. Subrahmanian, VC and MD of Afcons talks about this project in details. Supreme Infrastructure has emerged as a winner by successful implementation of its maiden marine project, connecting Bhiwandi and Thane near Mumbai. Mahesh Shejwal, Head - Infrastructure, West Zone, Supreme Infrastructure India shares how this project has become an engineering marvel. Creating positive built-in environment within health-care facilities demands certain expertise. Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, designed by Architect Shamit Manchanda is a model of excellence in this regard. Portraying culture with contemporary art is in the heart of many architects like Dilli Haat, designed by Sourabh Gupta, MD of Archohm Consults. However, for Manoj Dwivedi, CMD, Shri Infratech, Vedic City is a dream project because it’s not only a gigantic project, but also from architectural point of view, it’s going to be fantastic and delight for art connoisseurs. Brigade Exotica, being built in Bangalore, is an impeccable reflection of harmony, progressive thinking, sustainability and human imagination. The Imperial, designed by Hafeez Contractor and built in the heart of Mumbai, is an example of architectural masterpiece. We believe reading conceptualisation and designing theories of different tastes straight from the horse’s mouth can be enlightening for you to an amazing point. Wish you enjoy reading every experience they encountered. We are keen to hear your comments. Please write to us at editor@aceupdatemagazine.com

Techniques adopted over conventional working methods Activity

Conventional Approach

Supreme Adopted

Necessity/Benefits

Piling

By making coffer dam or structural gantry

Used spud barge to mount hydraulic rotary rig

Considering water depth of 20 m, very high current of water and 4-m tidal variation making cofferdam was not possible. Using structural gantry and conventional piling rig was time consuming.

Pile caps in marine conditions

By making coffer dam

Used inverted suspended arrangements as staging

Saved a lot of time for preparing coffer dams

Box girder with casting By casting box girders truss at approaches and then launching with LGs

Used casting trusses of 60 Casting 26 No box girder on approaches was time tonnes each (5 sets) consuming and strata at approaches was not suitable for casting 920-tonne box girders. The cost of heavy fabrication and operation of launching girder for box girders was very high compared to casting trusses

Steel structure at North Kasheli Bridge: 67.5 m span

Used mild truss through truss

By PSC box girders with supporting from temporary arrangement

Due to resistance of fishermen to close navigational span, it was not advisable to put temporary support at centre to support staging. Also casting with balanced cantilever method was expensive and time consuming. Supreme completed MS through truss central span in only 4 and half months

and Growth (INSDAG). The company has also been awarded with British Safety Council membership after meeting their stringent qualifying criteria. The company internal processes and operations are well integrated through SAP, thereby ensuring the best customer service. Kirby India’s buildings are designed as per with the norms of AISC, AISI, MBMA, BIS, etc., keeping customers’ requirements in mind. The company uses its proprietary software for design and detailing of PEB structures, in addition to the standard packages which include AutoCAD, STAADPro, ProSteel and Tekla. which allows all the buildings to be customized as per the unique demands of the customers. One of its popular products include KSS-600 (Kirby Standing Seam Panel) roofing system which is having double-lock standing seam ends and completely leak proof. Kirby India is the first PEB company in the country to achieve FM Global approval for its KSS-600 roofing system. Steel is the preferred material for all prefab structures and PEBs use steel which is more than 90 per cent recyclable. These buildings are cost-effective and energy efficient and provide better quality environment as they are cooler in hot conditions due to the favourable roofing material and natural ventilation. These buildings also help in energy saving due to more amount of natural sunlight through skylights used on the roof of the building, thereby reducing the overall power consumption. Effective usage of insulation material, louvers and other materials also help in making PEB one of the most preferred green buildings. Kirby India supplies its buildings with materials which are easily recyclable and do not use materials that are harmful for the environment. The company is always looking forward to be a part of green buildings and eco-friendly products. Kirby India has also demonstrated its capability to design and manufacture complex, heavy structures by executing mega projects in the automobile, shipyard, general engineering, infrastructure, logistics and

114

February 2014

various other industry segments. These big projects require not only the superior design but also excellent project management right from beginning to the end. Kirby India has also successfully ventured into many unexplored territories like power plant structures, bridge girders, shipyard etc. and became the role model for other PEB players by making inroads into these areas and laying the foundation for similar type of projects. Kirby India also received many recognitions and accolades such as Dun & Bradstreet Infra Award 2013 for the “Best Project” under the category of pre-engineered, Era Fame Awards 2013 for Outstanding Company (Pre Engineered Building), EPC World Award 2013 for the Outstanding Company in PreEngineered Building and International Safety Awards 2013 by British Safety Council. The industry is growing at an average of 10-15 per cent per annum with the market demand pegged at 500,000 tonnes per annum. Due to the increasing demand for these type of structures, Kirby has entered into heavy engineering applications — including offices/ commercial buildings/ high-rise buildings, shopping malls, multiplexes, power plants, oil and gas structures, steel plants, bridge girders, multi level car parking structures, airport terminal buildings and residential buildings — to cater to growing structural steel demand in the country. Over the years, Kirby India has evolved from a mere manufacturer of PEB to a total solution provider which is capable of supplying a packaged solution for all building requirements maintaining international standards and fulfilling the entire customer demand. Like a true leader, it has constantly tried to set new standards in the PEB industry. Its buildings have stood the test of time, time and again against all odds — manmade and natural.
