Can India lead the global steel industry in the next decade? Though India had lost its “No 3 slot” to the US in 2009 and its per capita steel consumption is still below the global average, it is all set to lead the steel output growth in the coming decade. Piping China, India is estimated to lead the world steel output growth, which is expected to touch 2,000 million tonnes by the turn of 2030.
www.aceupdate.com
World crude steel output is expected to jump by 400 million tonnes by 2030 from 1,600 million tonnes in 2014, largely supported by growth in India, World Steel Association forecasts.
I-Tech Media Pvt Ltd, 15/2, 2nd Floor, Chandroday Co-Op Society, Swastik Park, CST Road, Chembur, Mumbai - 400071. (India) Tel.: +91-22-32682214 / 15
The global steel consumption doubled from 800 million tonnes in 2004 to 1,600 million tonnes in 2014 — largely driven by demand from China. However, today China has reached the upper end of the growth curve and is seeing a real slowdown. Fuelled by population growth, rapid urbanisation and tremendous industrialisation, India has all the opportunities to regain its helm.

Earlier, in 2013, the government had set a target of trebling steel production capacity to 300 million tonne by 2025. This ambitious target will remain beyond achievable if the levelplaying field is not provided to the domestic players. Today, the domestic steel industry is struggling on many fronts. Like many other industries, cheap import from overseas is incessantly threatening the growth of domestic steel producers. Recently, industry body Assocham has raised its concern stating countries like China, Japan and Korea have become more competitive and are exporting steel to India at throwaway prices due to drop in platts iron ore index thereby creating huge problem in India and posing threat to survival and sustainability of domestic steel industry. It has urged the government to reduce iron ore prices by about 25 per cent to help domestic steel industry become competitive.

Dighi port and RVNL sign MoU for rail connectivity The prime minister’s vision of port-led growth takes shape in Maharashtra with the signing of MoU between Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) and Dighi Port Ltd. (DPL) from Dighi to Roha integrating the region with DMIC. The Maharashtra CM stressed that the most significant points of connectivity are Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Beed, Nanded and Ahmednagar. This will change the entire landscape of the state. The CM also complimented Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Railways for giving direction and momentum to the country and Maharashtra in particular with rail connections across the country. Port-led growth will play a very important role in the overall GDP growth of the country which is largely dependent on connectivity for industrialisation and overall growth. Due to various hindrances in the past, growth of ports was neglected which facilitated the growth of ports in other states. However, Maharashtra is now taking pro-active steps to meet Prime Minister Modi’s vision which will integrate the ports across the country, and Maharashtra will take a lead in promoting port-led growth. The government is also taking significant steps for capacity enhancement of private and non-major ports through close and open interaction with officials for fruitful decisions which will lead to commercial growth.

Comansa JIE is now Comansa CM Comansa JIE, the tower crane manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China, has changed its name from March and will be called as Comansa CM. The reason for the rebranding comes after the amicable exit of its main stockholder, which leaves the Linden Comansa group as the sole owner of Comansa CM.

The change of name will have little effect on the trajectory of the company, whose name is “Comansa Construction Machinery (Hangzhou) Co. Ltd.” Despite the change in name the sales, product strategy and management team will remain exactly the same as before. A clear example of this continuity is the Comansa CM logo itself, which has undergone minimal changes in comparison with the previous. The change in name was marked by a symbolic opening ceremony of Comansa CM took place at the Hangzhou factory on 24th March. The event was chaired by part of the management team from the Linden Comansa Group in presence of most of the Comansa CM staff. The ceremony included the unveiling of the new logo and company name at the gates of the factory. Created in 2006 as a Joint Venture, Comansa CM currently offers a range of 11 tower cranes with flattop design and maximum load capacities from 6 to 24 tonnes.

The EPC Player II Interview
The biggest differentiator between JSPL and other players in the construction sector is innovation and technology leadership. Ravi Uppal, MD and Group CEO, Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL)
JSPL: where innovation and tradition meets JSPL is one among the few in the construction sector which strives to solve everyday construction challenges through innovative construction products and solutions. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Ravi Uppal shares how JSPL has come up with revolutionary and innovative techniques to make construction process easy and enjoyable. India lacks an effective PPP model for the growth and development of infrastructure projects in India. What is your opinion on this? In order to remove the infrastructure deficiency in the country and develop world-class infrastructure in India, the investment requirements are mammoth, which cannot be met by the public sector alone due to fiscal constraints and mounting liabilities of the government. This would call for participation of private sector in coordination with the public sector to develop the public infrastructure facilities.

The government realises that the infrastructure sector will be the harbinger of growth in India. The government is encouraging public-private partnership (PPP) across the sectors; the recently announced PPP model in railways is bound to mobilise resources and go a long way in reducing borrowings for the ministry. However, the government needs to evolve an integrated infrastructure development plan which includes multiple models of ownership, viz. government, PPP and private investment to fast-track infrastructure development in India. The impediments to efficiency in PPP are role clarity on the part of partners and an effective regulator to oversee the progress of such projects. What do you think will be the X-factor in changing the construction scenario in India? Infrastructure bottleneck has been a serious concern in India
Interview II The EPC Player to robust pace of economic progression. Many advanced economies as well as developing countries have developed their physical infrastructure successfully through private participation. While private telecom service is a success story in India, private participation in infrastructure development remains dismal in the country. A recent paper by PHD Chamber of Commerce &Industry and Crisil Ratings enumerates that India needs to invest ` 26 trillion over the next 5 years for all its infrastructure projects to give a fillip to the ‘Make in India’ project and to achieve a growth trajectory of 7-8 per cent. It is estimated that of the ` 26 trillion, nearly 80 per cent will be needed for power, roads and urban infrastructure. Though the government has announced a spending of ` 1 trillion in infrastructure, much more needs to be done if we intend to achieve the growth target and compete with nations like China. Typically, infrastructure projects entail huge investments, are spread over larger time frames and therefore involve serious risks in project execution. The X-Factor in changing the construction scenario would be to augment investments for infrastructure development through innovative methods of financing and unbundling of risks. An increase in infrastructure spending, encouraging private participation and simplifying guidelines for financing of infrastructure projects will augur well for the construction industry in India. How do you think that the increased flow of FDI in India will help the infrastructure and construction sector? The infrastructure and construction sector in India have been plagued by clearance issues between the centre and the states, delays with respect to land acquisition and limited project financing options. Even the banks find it difficult to provide lon- term financing owing to concerns over asset-liability mismatch. To overcome the asset liability mismatch, they invariably restrict their finance to a maximum period of 12-15 years. This period should be increased to 25 years so as to enable easy funding of these projects. An increased FDI inflow will attract investment in new areas and encourage overall development leading to the economic growth of the country. FDI inflows would augment infrastructure development and result in creation of the much needed affordable housing in the country and the development of smart cities. FDI will provide the much needed impetus, thereby, helping in overcoming the capital challenges in the infrastructure space.
The infrastructure and construction sector in India have been plagued by clearance issues between the centre and the states, delays with respect to land acquisition and limited project financing options.
What policy changes does the government need to draw more investments in the construction sector? The government has already relaxed FDI norms in the construction sector, reduced the built-up and capital area, and eased the exit norms. This will boost FDI in the construction sector and positively impact the realty segment in the country. However, stable macroeconomic framework, sound regulatory structure, investor-friendly policies, sustainable project revenues, transparency and consistency of policies, effective regulation and liberalisation of labour laws, and good corporate governance would be imperatives to sustain enthusiasm in the infrastructure and construction sector in India. How do you differentiate your company from other players in the construction sector? The biggest differentiator between JSPL and other players in the construction sector is innovation and technology leadership. The company strives to solve everyday construction through innovative construction products and solutions, driven by our passion for being at the apex of the ‘technology curve’. Our innovations save on time and manpower and have many environmental and cost benefits. JSPL has come up with revolutionary and innovative techniques like the cut and bend welded mesh, Jindal global road stabiliser, speedfloor, light gauge structures, EPS panels, lightweight aggregates, fly ash bricks and pavers. These technological solutions reduce manual labour thus increasing productivity and quality. They have been effectively harnessed in various marquee projects across India. We diligently follow the 3R model to reduce, reuse and recycle materials and utilise process by-products like fly ash and slag, thus reducing the negative footprint in our eco-system and contributing to a greener tomorrow. A testimony of environment consciousness is Jindal Panther Cement which utilises slag form the blast furnace and fly ash from the power plant to produce fortified cement which caters to varying housing and construction requirement of large infrastructure projects, residential, commercial and industrial usage. JSPL is also equipped with India’s first state-of-the-art plate mill that produces plates and coils of 5 metres and 3 metres width respectively, for the first time in the private sector. We also manufacture rails, angles and parallel flange beams that cater to the needs and requirements of the infrastructure industry. In fact, the company has pioneered manufacturing of 121-metre-long track rails and a facility to factory weld these rails in welded lengths of up to 480 metres. The world’s longest track rails are a testimony to JSPL’s manufacturing capabilities where continuous innovation is a practice rather than an exception. n

Construction of steel structures in India set to increase with the country looking for fast, reliable methods of construction to meet its demand India is expected to become world’s second largest producer of crude steel in 2015-16, moving up from the fourth position. This result will lead to a rise in building of steel structures across the country as well as pave way for fast and positive growth of Indian infrastructure industry. Market position With the demand for pre-engineered steel structures sets to increase in the country players within the market will be stepping up their offerings and services to stay ahead in the competition. Speaking on the present market scenario, Samir Sharan, CEO, ACME Cleantech Solutions, says, “ACME is one of the leading prefabricated infrastructure players, using PUF panels. We, at ACME, endeavour to make green approach profitable through world-class technology and manufacturing through pre-engineered construction, using optimum grade PUF material and

sophisticated technology in synchronisation with international standards.” D Raju, MD, Kirby Building Systems, feels, “Over the years, Kirby India has evolved from a mere manufacturer of PEB to a total solution provider which is capable of supplying a packaged solution for all building requirements while maintaining international quality standards and fulfilling the entire customer demand.” Gautam Suri, Founder Director and CTO, Interarch Building Products, incorporates, “Interarch is one of India’s leading turnkey pre-engineered metal building and steel construction companies with market share of around 30 per cent in pre-engineered steel construction market.” He also adds “Interarch caters to some of the most diverse steel building construction
projects in India, with clients like Tata Motors, BHEL, Reliance Industries, General Motors, L&T Limited, Dabur India, Liugong,3M India Limited, PepsiCo India Holdings, ITC Ltd, P&G, Siemens Ltd and many more.” Referring to the company’s market status, PV Rao, Managing Director, PEBS Pennar, states, “We started PEB division in Pennar 5 years back from scratch, and today we are in the top three. We are targeting to reach a revenue of ` 500 crore in fiscal 2014-15, and our aim is to reach revenue of `1,000 crore in the next 3 years.” Growth of steel structures in India With the expected improvement in economy and infrastructure the demand for steel structures is set to rise. With the increase in demand for steel structures India looks capable enough to produce the required amount of steel to support its growing demand in the coming

years. Mr Rao believes, “We have sufficient steel production capacity in India for structural steel as well as PEBs. Currently, the supply capacity is more than the demand. I am sure, with the current positive environment created in the market by the new government, there would be growth in the demand for structure steel as well as PEBs.” Mr Raju opines, “Structural steel demand is based on India’s economic growth and new CAPEX investments or announcement of new projects mostly in the construction industry consisting of infrastructure, industrial infrastructure and real estate segments. Recent announcement of increased investment in the infrastructure segment during the budget 2015 and revival of stalled projects including some new investments will help the growth of steel structures in India.” He adds, “PEB production capacity is 50 per cent more than the current market demand which is pegged at around 600,000 tonnes per annum. This excess capacity will help us meet the increased demand for PEB in coming years as the economy takes the growth path.” According to estimates by World Steel Association 2013-14, the steel consumption
has been growing globally at 2 per cent. And the same will grow by another 2.0 per cent in 2015 and will reach 1,594 tonnes. India has observed the encouraging signs of uptake of prefabricated technology from the past few years, and the future also looks bright for India. The government has also announced to provide housings for all by 2022. All these factors will add to the growth of prefabricated structures in India in the years to come.
benefits of constructing in pre-engineered steel,” explains Mr Suri.
“Steel definitely has great potential in the field of infrastructure. As we go ahead to explore newer technologies in construction like pre-engineered buildings, there would be furthermore avenues that would exploit the potential of steel as the key construction material,” says Mr Sharan.
In the last decade, there has been increased acceptance of PEB due to rapidly expanding industrialisation in the country. Mr Raju states, “The changing market environment has led to an increase in shift towards more advanced technologies with one of them being PEB due to increasing demand from customers for faster project completion which in turn will give faster returns on their investments. Some of the other challenges faced by PEB industry include price volatility of raw material and availability of skilled manpower.”
Commenting on the trends, Mr Rao says, “The smart city and ‘Make in India’ initiative by the new government will definitely boost the industrial production in the times to come. Also, the decision of the government to source defence equipment from domestic market to a larger extent will significantly encourage industries in this segment.”
Trends in the market Structural steel in India offers numerous benefits to the modern construction sector, though there are major problems pertaining to the adoption of steel structures from traditional building elements. “People still tend to look the conventional method of construction as the best and cheaper method of construction overlooking the long-term

Future of steel structure in India India is expected to become the world’s second largest producer of crude steel in 2015-16, moving up from the fourth position. This means that the country will be producing more steel. There is undoubtedly, a very promising future for this sector in the coming years. The Indian pre-engineered market is now experiencing a demand shift to new applications due to infrastructure development in the country and advantages of pre-engineered steel structures.
Mr Raju states, “The central government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign and recent approval of ordinance for amendment of Land Acquisition Act for development of infrastructure and industry related projects will further give a boost to the economic growth.” He further adds, “These reforms and many other such initiatives in coming future as promised by the government is expected to make the Indian construction and infrastructure segments much more stronger and increase its percentage share in the overall GDP contribution, thereby giving a positive growth momentum to the PEB industry over the next decade or so.”
ACME is also working towards increasing awareness about the new technologies at various levels through inclusion of all stakeholders for the benefit of society-atlarge through bringing down the carbon footprint, decreasing the time and input costs, and more efficient infrastructure. soon witnessing, under normal and stable economic situation, a potential blooming in the roofing segment. The new industrial sheds and warehouse construction, as he believes, will be a plenty, besides new addition in mass communication centres like airports and railway stations and heavy infrastructure projects in the field of mining, cement and ports, all of which would give a major boost to the roofing segment in India. “The current trend is the use of colourcoated metallic roofing systems across all the major green field and brown field

industrial projects,” says Ajay Rattan, General ManagerSales and Marketing (LYSAGHT), Tata BlueScope Steel. “After increased awareness on hazards associated with production and usage of asbestos roofing, the roofing requirements of the Indian customers are met in the form of metallic and non-metallic types. The major reasons for this practice are durability, high strength, economical and faster construction, design flexibility and improved aesthetics.” Considering the varied requirements of the Indian roofing industry, Tata BlueScope Steel under its flagship LYSAGHT brand offers 11 different colour-coated steel roofing and wall-cladding solutions. There is also a growing awareness about the advantages of sustainability and long-term cost effectiveness. “The future is in sustainable materials,” believes Dinesh Jaikumar, Director – Operations, SunGreen Ventilation Systems Pvt. Ltd. “Turnkey projects where roofing is not just a structure to cover the building but an integral part of the entire space provides support to other systems such as HVAC, lighting, energy generation and so forth.” Foreseeing this, Mr Jaikumar gives it focus in providing complete turnkey solutions that incorporate its cost-effective, green trussless roofing with custom, energy-efficient HVAC systems in record time. Then there is pre-engineering buildings (PEBs) which have emerged and provided cost-effective roofing solutions. With more optimum designs and better quality construction, the building construction costs have lowered at the same time, with quality standards. An experienced team of fabrication experts, engineers and HVAC specialists places Green Curve Roofing Systems apart from the usual roofing contractors. He explains, “We provide solutions that ensure the design is implemented to increase the lifespan, ensure functionality and provides optimum conditions, both process and comfort for the most efficient and productive use of the space. Hence we provide a roofing system that has perfect synergy with the entire building and its use, placing us in a different league.” Key issues and trends in the market The Indian roofing industry has witnessed a sustainable growth and is preparing for its next generation of ambitious projects. A major shift is observed from clay tiles and conventional roofing systems to metal cladding solutions. Today customers are looking for architectural solutions which enable innovative shapes in addition to attractive colours. The key issues facing the roofing market at present is an emphasis on lowering costs, at any cost. According to Mr Jaikumar, “This has led to sub-standard construction and deterioration on quality, increasing costs for the client in the longer run. Educating the market on the importance of quality

“Another trend is the emphasis on sustainability as mentioned above and safety,” adds Mr Jaikumar. “Worker conditions and the feasibility of the structure for long use and expansion are taken into account by knowledgeable clients and roofing system providers. We, at Green Curve, place extra emphasis on worker safety and have a trained team that ensures you have a precise construction.” Businesses to the next level Green Curve continues providing sustainable, cost-effective and engineered solutions. The company further plans include taking its HVAC incorporated roofing to the next stage. Its emphasis on R&D to provide roofing and HVAC solutions will help sustain costs, even lower, in the longer run. Over the past 3 years, COLORSHINE has witness a major change in customer choice and behaviour. It is found that there is a shift towards application of sheets in earthly and ecological-friendly colours in roofing and cladding of commercial housing, industrial sheds and turnkey infrastructural projects. Its prepainted coils are also very popular with the roofing and cladding industry due to durability, strength and costcompetitiveness. The Big Architect II INTERVIEW
“Architecture is an ever encompassing feeling which we experience all the time,” says Ar. Sabeena Khanna
Architecture is a way of life: Ar. Khanna
Architecture is an art that works hand-inhand with science to design place where people can live, eat, work and play. In order to design these environments, an architect combines the practical considerations of the site, the clients’ needs and costs with a creative understanding of materials, aesthetics, and the cultural and physical contexts. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, Ar. Sabeena Khanna shares how an architect uses her creativity and working knowledge of structures and materials to provide living, working and recreational environment.
Architectural inspiration came to me at an early age from my architect father, V.N. Shah, who spearheaded Haryana and Himachal Pradesh for almost 20 years as a chief architect. I travelled the length and breadth of these states with him and was fascinated to see new places and cultures, meet people and even visit construction sites. Little did I realize that via participating in daily discussions or travelling with my father, I was subtly being exposed to the design environment long before my formal education was to be in architecture.
What drew you to architecture and how do you see your role as an architect?

stage design, public art, installation design, design of public space, brand design, community consultation, research, urban design and many more where the scope is limitless. In the words of Renzo Piano, “Good architecture is intentioned. It touches the people who use it and live in it.” As architects, we have a social and cultural responsibility to create buildings that uplift the human spirit in addition to the function they serve. We create physical environments and subtly infuse positivity and relevance, which improves quality of life. These collectives make architecture meaningful and fascinating beyond its physical manifestation. Sensitivity and responsiveness, nevertheless, will continue to govern our architectural practice so that engaging and collaborative environments are created. In architecture, we continue to demand ‘better than before’ of ourselves as an architect which keeps us going to deliver our best with each project.
Is there anything you know now that you didn’t know when you started as an architect? Fresh out of school, with theoretical concepts drilled into you, one feels like an ultimate designer — a la Howard Roark, out to change the world. The masters are a direct source of inspiration and you think you know it all! However, the transition from being a student to starting out as an architect till today has been a constant learning curve, and it should continue to be because the day one stops learning, it is over. From education to profession is perceptibility. the need for sustainability in today’s times. The current designing scenario is vastly creative and varied. Over the years, I have learnt that every day of my architectural practice is a competition where I have to compete with myself! What are the biggest challenges the profession of architecture is facing? The architecture profession is in transition. There’s a lot of change happening, and we have always adapted the change. Globalisation, rapid urbanisation and technological advances are the new world order. Today architecture brings together much that is important for society at large; namely, shelter, social function, technology, art, economics, politics, science and more. Consequently, architecture can be a mirror to society.
Technological advancements too have revolutionised the profession today. Architectural trends could range from tall, glitzy buildings of Dubai which defy all standard practices of structural design to the green, vernacular architecture imbibing

The Big Architect II INTERVIEW in innovation have been part of modernity for centuries as also technological development and expansion. Transitional forms of architecture are traversing national boundaries and becoming part of a new world culture. Technological advancement in electronics, robotics, telecommunications, new materials and biotechnology has given rise to a new paradigm that accentuates the role of the world cities. Globalisation seems to be associated with a loss of place identity. Indian architecture has been influenced by its long history, extremely varied geographical and environmental conditions across the country and ancient philosophical ideas. The consequent cultural diversity is exemplified in the form of the towns and cities which have evolved over time across the country. Against this multi-layered backdrop, the realities of today pose challenges for the development of a contemporary architectural ethos. With a quarter of the country’s population living in cities today, the urban structure which together constitutes a contemporary city can be identified as the organically evolved, the planned and the spontaneous with the

present challenge of integration, to form a harmonious whole, while respecting the cultural characteristics of each type. Also, the problem of very large numbers in Indian cities poses the challenge of managing scarce resources effectively. Perhaps the greatest hope lies in the development of a professional ethos which is responsive to these challenges of historical continuity, scarce resources, socio-cultural complexity and technological contradictions. What are the projects that you’ve done make you proud? Studio KIA has done projects of all types and magnitude within the country and globally for renowned business houses,
developers and government organisations. Our professional journey began three and a half decades ago with the Timber Trail Resort, Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh which soon became the most sought-after uphill getaway for the people of Chandigarh and Punjab and continues to be so. Our architectural odyssey has taken us through many interesting phases wherein we engaged in thought provoking to highly creative design projects ranging from hospitality and retail interiors for Khazana stores, Taj Group of Hotels and ITDC properties to large townships for Allahabad and Ghaziabad Development Authorities to master planning for mixed-land use developments and recreational environments globally.
INTERVIEW II The Big Architect The flavour of the architectural practice has been vast and varied with our recent key projects being The Umrao, a boutique hotel near the IGI Airport on National Highway-8 in Delhi; district headquarters for South Goa Collectorate, a 4,00,000-sq.-ft. institutional building in Portuguese architectural character; Palm Drive and Palm Terraces Select for Emaar MGF, Gurgaon; The Grand, luxury apartments for SARE Group in Gurgaon; and TDI Tuscan Heights, Kundli.
design professional, an architect uses his creativity and working knowledge of structures and materials to provide living, working and recreational environments. To design these environments, an architect combines the practical considerations of the site, the clients’ needs and costs with a creative understanding of materials, aesthetics, and the cultural and physical contexts. Architects have to balance the private needs of their clients with the interest of the community at large.
The international concerns include the Dubai Lifestyle City, Dubailand for ETA Group; concept creation of a mixed landuse development in Sharjah on a land lot admeasuring 9 sq. Km; hospitality project design in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; a 500-acre mixed-land use-cum-residential development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and schools at Al Wathba and Mussaffah in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Architectural design is a therapy or a creative exercise which is unique to each architect.
What advice you have for younger architects? We’re living in interesting times, and I’ve found myself contemplating what makes us tick. I enter my design studio every morning with renewed confidence and creativity. In a studio full of machines with constant clicking of the key boards, my work desk with its antiquated drawing board and ruffling of tracing sheets, I get my daily measure of inspiration. The stroke of the pencil and the initial concept sketch continue to form the basis of each design created.
What makes a great place? What makes one think fondly of a visit to a favourite town or city and want to return there? What makes a place uniquely itself, of a region, characteristic of the land and the people who live on it? How can a new development become one of these favourite places?
The architects are an enthused lot with strong ideologies. Today they excite and are impressive, while the architects of the previous generation influenced and inspired. Creativity flows in abundance nevertheless. We have to learn from our past and build on it.
I would like to be able to echo these feelings into a creation which immortalises architecture to a level of celebration and pride for its users.
Nothing succeeds like success, and living is all about winning. Winning isn’t from people around you but from your own self, every day. n
Is there any project you wish you designed? How can you make the project better? Architecture is an art that works hand-inhand with science to design place, where people can live, eat, work and play. As a

Trimble and smart city mission Now, the Indian government plans to develop 100 smart cities and a hopping ` 7,600 crore has been earmarked for the said purpose. Trimble aims to play significant role relevant to smart cities concept. “Trimble group is fairly selective in targeting the roles we play,” says Mr Berglund. “We are a large provider of telematics. In terms of building the smart city and building the smart city intelligently, intelligent construction is our primary territory.”
Virtual construction Vico Office delivers a different way of working with BIM models. Used for much more than visualisation, Vico Office extends the basic 3D model with constructability analysis and coordination, quantity takeoff, 4D location-based scheduling and production control, and 5D estimating.
There are a number of discrete areas where Trimble can provide significant capabilities in smart cities with intelligent transportation systems. In order to have an intelligent transportation system, there is a need to have knowledge at micro level. There is a need to understand how things are in intelligent transportation. “In terms of capability, Trimble is a participant in the smart city initiative,” claims Mr Berglund. “We will demonstrate the appropriate flexibility in bringing solutions.” n

chemical industry. The growth of Tier 2 and 3 cities has also put the waterproofing industry in a much better time. Let’s discuss what the industry leaders have to say. Future of waterproofing Waterproofing segment has the highest and the brightest potential to have an exponential growth in Indian market in all areas of construction industry. “The lack of awareness still prevailing in this segment is actually an opportunity in itself,” says Arijit Basu, Country Head – Roofing and Sealing (Bonding), Sika India. “However, with this enormous potential of growth there is also a danger of having various different companies and products flooding
the market at the same time without giving the market the time to evolve and mature, which can lead to confusion and wrong selection and subsequent dissatisfaction at the end user level. We envisage a growth of a minimum 15 per cent CAGR in this segment for next couple of years.” Dr Sanjay Bahadur, Global CEO, Construction Chemicals, Pidilite Industries, thinks differently as he says that waterproofing market in India is at a very premature state, since the bulk of the construction sites use traditional methods like brickbat coba and mud puska which have their own limitations. “We see this as an area where huge opportunities exist,” explains Dr Bahadur. “There is an urgency to inculcate
Industry Analysis II Waterproofing the right material use, right dose and the correct application to ensure that we create healthy structures. As far development in the construction chemicals industry goes, there has been a strong growth rate of 17 per cent per annum.” As the construction and manufacturing are gearing to boom in India, construction chemicals market has a huge growth potential. Many newly developed products give better performance and results; hence, there will be a shift in demand towards better performing products. Increasing urbanisation and waterproofing Infrastructure development and increasing urbanisation have become a key growth driver for not only waterproofing but overall construction chemical industry. “We stay optimistic that there will be further momentum in these areas which can propel the growth of waterproofing segment significantly,” says Mr Basu. However, the major challenge would adopting such solutions at the design stage as like “investment” rather than “cost”. Even Dr Bahadur echoes the same sentiment. He shares, “With growing urbanisation, the need of multi-dwelling apartments, vertical structures and environmentalfriendly options are growing. At the same time, with the growth of Tier 2 and 3 cities and the older building needing revival the opportunity is vast.” Key issues and trends Lack of skilled manpower is one of the biggest challenges and a major constraint faced by the sector. “The industry’s biggest challenges are low awareness regarding

the benefits of construction chemicals, inadequate knowledge on proper usage of these chemicals and lack of enforcement of quality standards on construction activities,” adds Dr Bahadur. “About 85 per cent of contractors and builders are not aware of the key advantages of using construction chemicals and have limited knowledge on their proper applications.
by sharing its rich, global experience and helping the local construction professionals to adopt and implement the technology solutions under Indian climate conditions and construction practices, by sharing its know-how and dissipating the same through hands on workshops and trainings. Mr Basu revearls, “One of our major plans would be to address the refurbishment part of the waterproofing segment like in basements, water tanks, expansion joints and roofs, where there is a lot of pain area and a very less competence and know-how available. Sika would like to help the key owners not only to fix the problem for one monsoon but to show them that by adopting designed and proven Sika technology they can restore the performance and durability and above all get back their peace of mind.”
“We believe ‘sustainable and green construction’ is the key market trends in construction chemicals and waterproofing solutions market in the country. More and more clients are demanding a green construction which is eco-friendly and puts less strain on natural resources, he adds” Pidilite has developed an advanced high-end range of waterproofing system with 25 years of waterproofing and insulation warranty. “This solution will take waterproofing to the next level as far as high-end projects are concerned,” claims Dr Bahadur. “We believe this new solution will contribute significantly as the value proposition is very strong.”
Whereas Pidilite looks at new construction as a definite area of opportunity as more and more smart cities getting developed. According to Dr Bahadur, “Another area of focus is to develop and promote products for each surface area of the house. These products will ensure that all waterproofing concerns are story of the past. We are also looking at being as service oriented as we can. From DFI to Tech Chat, we are exploring all areas and media to reach our influencers, users and consumers. Only when, we will be able to service them satisfactorily we will be able to leap to the next level.”
According to Mr Basu, “When it comes to waterproofing, the most critical part is to ‘Do It First Time Right’.” However, the major issues actually start from the point of design and specification itself. Another larger challenge is the quality and expertise at the execution and installation level which finally leads to a non-performing structure in terms of water tightness and dissatisfied and helpless end users. The involvement of multiple stake holders without a clarity and responsibility matrix also puts the ownerships on wrong places, resulting in further disputes and pains.
The players Sika is one of the leading players in waterproofing segment. With in-house R&D capability and a well-spread out manufacturing units in India, Sika is very close to the customers in terms of providing solutions and servicing the critical needs in terms of timely execution with proven performance. “Sika believes in solutions rather than products and hence does not have one-size-fits-all principle. We provide customised techno-commercial solutions to our customers based on their needs.
However, as Mr Basu adds, the trend is encouraging with more focus and awareness developing on waterproofing and customers are becoming more inclined towards solutions rather than just buying products based on technical data sheets. There is also a trend to opt for more sustainable and userfriendly solutions.
Innovation and improvement has been also Pidilite’s mission, and it wants to continue being in the same sphere. “The need of the hour is to carve a niche which supports newage construction with improved technology which supports the life of the construction,” adds Dr Bahadur. n
Taking businesses to next level Sika India would like to stay patient and committed in closely working with all the stake holders. The company wants to ensure “best demonstrated practices” are adopted

paving, compaction as well as crushing and screening technologies where these new generation machines were in operation. Commenting on the company’s roadmap for the Indian market Mr Wirtgen said, “Our job is to continuously grow in India. We consider India as an important market for us, and it is a fascinating country full of opportunities. Therefore, we want to grow our manufacturing base in India, want to get more products and increase our sales and service representation.” He also expressed the positive response the group has received from the Indian business over the past 20 years. “Our turnover rose even though the market was flat in the past years,” he explains. “But we are here for long term and see a great future. Also, the market is getting much better and the feedback which we are getting is perfect.” Mr Palagiri also shared his views. “We have inaugurated a new plant,” he adds, “where we will be producing the Kleemann screens, initially for the Indian market. In Germany, we produce the higher capacity screens, but most of the other screens will now be produced in India not only for the domestic market but for export as well. In the same plant, we will have production of Vogele jaw and cone crushers for which the design work has just started. We expect the first machine to roll out in 12-18 months time. The design process is being done jointly in India and Germany. The same process what we did for Hamm products and Vogele pavers which will roll out by next March-April.” New plant and innovation Wirtgen is presently concentrating on 200- to 300-tonne capacity,
We have inaugurated a new plant where we will be producing the Kleemann screens, initially for the Indian market. Ramesh Palagiri, Managing Director and CEO, Wirtgen India both jaw and cone crushers. “When we come with this product, we are able to offer standard quality products at competitive price for the Indian market,” remarked Mr Palagiri. “We have adopted the product for the Indian market like using a local Cummins engine as well as all the new technologies.” Wirtgen is also planning to do the same for Vogele pavers, which is going to be launched by the same time next year. Mr Palagiri added, “The wheeled and the tract pavers will have 6-metre width to meet the specific requirement for the state highway jobs in India, where they are trying to convert single lane into double lane. For the screens, we will have a range from 200-600 tonnes.” The market size for this class of pavers is about 300 machines, and Wirtgen is expecting at least 30 per cent market share. At later stage, the company is also planning to export. “If we look at the world market, road building equipment category is getting divided based on the engine regulation and not much on technology,” explained Mr Palagiri. “We have US, Europe, Australia and Japan with Tier 4, while the rest of the world with Tier 2 or Tier 3. But most of the Tier 2 countries are gradually shifting to Tier 3. So the products that we are going to develop in India, except the screens, will be for Tier 3. With that we have a chance to export to any market in any Tier 3 countries.” Wirtgen has displayed many new technologies like milling of the road. People just keep on doing layers, dig it out, throw it and put their layers. Now Wirtgen machines are capable of removing the aggregates, and there is tremendous saving of natural resources and cost. “The only additional cost what the contractors incurred is adding the extra bitumen which gets oxidised, mixing cost and the relaying cost,” shared Mr Palagiri. “Otherwise, the cost will be laying a new layer of asphalt with aggregate and 5 per cent bitumen. That’s why we showcased recycling technology. We are trying to showcase the training where the machine can directly lay the crash barrier or drains. This way we can do it much faster — 2 km per day.” Long-term perspective in India In the new plant, Wirtgen Group has invested about ` 80 crore, while its total investment is about ` 180 crore. In order to create better manufacturing and introduce new products, Wirtgen has been focusing more on supporting its customers. Mr Wirtgen seemed very happy with the government policies as well as PM Modi’s “Make In India” initiative. “We are very positive about the campaign,” he said. “India will grow in the next few years tremendously, and we want to be a small part of it.” The maker believes that it would be surely able to bring “achche din” for India. n
Mall Designing II Experts Column
10 innovative ways to enhance mall experience Sunil Shroff, Sr. Vice President, Viviana Mall explains ‘10 innovative ideas’ which contribute to change the look and feel of the mall offering more leisure and comfort to the consumers As disposable incomes are getting higher, consumers are getting more mature and are demanding a luxurious lifestyle. Therefore, it has become a top priority for the mall developers and architects to design their property innovatively to attract and keep the customers involved at the mall as it is said that “Innovations drive growth and development”. Here we discussed the innovative ideas which contribute to change the look and feel of the mall offering more leisure and comfort to the consumers. The article also outlines how malls can be taken to a next level by adapting innovative techniques in terms of design, interiors and architecture making a simple shopping trip into a social event, attracting

and retaining customers with its various well placed offerings. 1. Looks matter Most of the upcoming malls are based on the concept of contemporary design with added elements of classical architecture. In order to have a mall replicate the image of a great ‘hangout’ zone, a commitment to materials of permanence and quality is required. Natural and manufactured materials such as cut stone, concrete, brick and stucco are exterior wall materials that provide a cohesive and consistent architectural character that helps to unify the mall visually. Building surfaces should ideally be light in colour. 2. Prevent bottlenecks
Experts Column II Mall Designing
An important aspect while designing a mall is to regulate the traffic circulation. Interesting alignment of landscape islands and driveways along with canopies and trellises, facilitating pedestrian traffic is ideal for malls with large spaces. For malls with small parking spaces, the traffic should be facilitated with multiplex egress/ingress points. 3. Pick the right mix Tenant mix is an alternative term for brand mix, and an area where one simply cannot afford to go wrong. Mall developers should first identify their anchor tenants and then build their tenant mix around it. Formulating the right tenant mix based on zoning not only helps to attract and retain shoppers by offering them multiple choices, but also enables smooth movement of shoppers within the mall, avoiding clusters and bottlenecks thus creating a win-win situation for both shoppers and retailers.
6. Make it easy to grab a bite Food courts play a key element in a mall where people not only eat but also meet friends, family, talk about their shopping and spend quality time together. Food courts should have high-quality, comfortable furniture which enables conversation. The food court options should always be in sync with the tenant mix at the mall. It should be an inviting space and have options of a few fine dining restaurants along with fast food chains to complement the tenants. Being the second most important aspect in a mall as grabbing a bite after shopping or after a film, the food court experience should always be pleasant for the customers.
4. Birds of a feather… Another important concept to be kept in mind is ‘Clustering’ - a process of gathering tenants of the same type into the same location. The developers can have clusters in all retail groups such as fashion, food, men’s wear, ladies wear, entertainment etc. When you have clusters of tenants, the customer has an access to a variety of options in a single category without any inconvenience. Thus, sensible bundling of tenancies will further improve the customer experience at a retail property. Likewise, malls and movie theatres have a symbiotic relationship. When you have a multiplex within a mall, there’s always something to do before and after a movie. 5. State-of-the-art amenities Mall spaces should ideally be swamped with F&B outlets on both sides, with informal seating spaces and water features forming an ideal hang-out space for all age-groups. It also creates a positive environment welcoming customers for exploring the interiors with greater shopping experience. The design should match international standards not only with its unique architecture but also with its thoughtfulness towards providing best of facilities like an ideal mother-care room, designated parking for physically challenged amongst others.

7. A perfect match for anyone Mall designers are now creating zones in a mall catering to different audiences. Special food zones like sushi bars, play areas, business centres to surf the internet are some innovative ideas that malls can now incorporate. To make a visit to the mall more personalized, carefully chosen textures using stones, wood, strategically placed props and furniture, and the right lighting helps create a homely and relaxed feel. 8. Think green Simple steps that contribute towards environmental consciousness should be taken such as separate waste bins for dry and wet waste, recycling stations at parking areas for the disposal of paper and glass give added value to a mall in this age of environment conscious citizens.
to acknowledge the awareness of green buildings amongst people today. To increase the energy saving potential, occupancy based and timer based sensors should be installed. The upward out-door lighting should be limited, hence safeguarding the nocturnal life of the birds and insects.
9. Keep it comfortable Roofing systems of a mall should comprise of excellent acoustical and heat insulation values. Tiles that act as an effective reflective material for heat reduction and wall panels that give better heat insulation value should be used while building a mall.
On the whole, the design and architecture of a mall provides a platform that can transform a simple shopping trip into a social event, attracting and retaining customers with its various well placed offerings. Carefully designed malls also satisfy and cater to the requirements of today’s customer that is conscious about the environment. n
10. Design for a better future With the world becoming a more environmentally conscious place, malls too need to keep in mind the need for energy saving and sustainability. It lies in a developer’s interest

Grooved-end mechanical piping systems reduce the mechanical room footprint, enhance system performance and save time and cost on installation, says Simon Ouellette, Victaulic Engineering Services Supervisor
Mechanical rooms: improved efficiency and optimisation Controlling costs and compressing schedules without sacrificing quality are key concerns for contractors responsible for mechanical room installations. Clients are looking for on-time, on-budget delivery of high-quality systems that work well and are easy to maintain. Alongside these drivers, space is becoming a critical factor. The high cost of commercial and industrial building space and its scarcity has led to a growing trend to squeeze the size of mechanical rooms. Ever tighter architectural designs for new builds are putting pressure

on consulting engineers and contractors to deliver reliable, cost-effective HVAC solutions that keep the mechanical room footprint to a minimum. Similar demands are being made for mechanical room retrofits within the structural constraints of older buildings. Grooved-end mechanical piping systems address all these issues. The lighter weight, smaller size yet higher integral strength of grooved components compared with welded or flanged systems, make them ideal for projects that are tight on space or where mechanical rooms are located on higher-level
floors. Their ease and speed of installation offer savings on total installed costs and they also deliver improved performance and reliability. Fewer rubber bellows Victaulic grooved couplings are designed with an elastomeric gasket contained inside the internal cavity of a ductile iron or stainless steel housing and secured by two nuts and bolts to create a leak-tight joint. This unique design gives the couplings noise and vibration reducing properties superior to those of traditional devices.
TECHNOLOGY II Green Buildings In traditional mechanical room set-ups rubber bellows or compensators are placed in the piping system at either side of the pump to reduce noise and vibration and are sometimes used to correct misalignment between welded pipe and equipment, placing the rubber under intense stress in a certain plane. Not only do they take up valuable plantroom space, but rubber bellows are considered the weakest point of an installation and the first component that is likely to fail, as general wear and tear, along with exposure to UV light in the mechanical room, causes the rubber to erode. They also require ongoing maintenance: as bolts gradually slacken and the system starts to weep, the bolts need to be tightened regularly. With a best life expectancy of 10 years, rubber bellows may need to be replaced several times within the life of the system - which involves system downtime plus the cost of a new unit. Failure of the rubber bellows can be sudden and unpredictable, causing serious health and safety risks if, for example, the rubber splits and water escapes. Installing three Victaulic grooved flexible couplings on each side of a pump solves these problems. It eliminates the need for costly, bulky flanged units and avoids the use of rubber bellows. The coupling construction enables the gasket to seal against the pipe, while the metal housing provides both space for the resilient elastomeric material to flex, and containment to prevent overstretching. This creates a discontinuity similar to that of a rubber compensator. Additionally, ductile iron and stainless steel both have their own vibration dampening qualities, so the external housing also serves to absorb sound, thereby protecting equipment and enhancing the life time of the system. A further advantage is removing the need for tie rods or the type of bracketry required to support pipework on top of and beneath bellows which increases time, labour and material costs. Special bracketry must either be prefabricated or fabricated on site and can account for around two thirds of the cost of installing a metre of pipe. Installations with flexible grooved couplings avoid these issues as they only require conventional brackets.
The groove explained A mechanical joint is comprised of four elements: grooved pipe, a gasket, a coupling housing, and nuts and bolts. The pipe groove is made by cold forming or machining a groove into the end of a pipe. The key section of the coupling housing engages the groove and the bolts and nuts are tightened with a socket wrench or impact wrench and hold the housing segments together. In the installed state, the coupling housing segments encase the gasket and engage the grooves around the circumference of the pipe to create a leak-tight seal in a self-restrained pipe joint.
Three Victaulic flexible couplings can be used not only with pumps but also with chiller units, cooling towers and any equipment with an engine that causes vibration. The use of additional grooved couplings - whether flexible or rigid - in the distribution lines will further reduce the transmission of vibration. By combining versatility with durability, the method provides a low-maintenance solution that saves space and delivers both practical and commercial benefits throughout the life of the system. More alignment In addition to noise and vibration attenuation, Victaulic grooved couplings allow for alignment ease in a pump installation. The pipe and system components can be fully rotated before tightening, without creating stress on the pump flange or equipment connection. Flexible couplings also help to accommodate slight deviation that might be caused if pipework has not been prefabricated to exact dimensions – something which is more difficult to achieve with a welded or flanged system.
Couplings provide the convenience of a union at every joint and fall into two categories: flexible and rigid. Both provide the security of full circumferential engagement of the coupling into the groove for high pressure and end load performance. Rigidity is achieved with rigid couplings. The unique angled pad design provides positive clamping of the pipe to resist torsional and flexural loads.
Pump energy Cavitation is a problem frequently experienced, especially where space is limited. When turbulent water enters a pump chamber and the suction eye of a pump impeller, the degree of turbulence has a direct correlation with lower pump efficiency
Flexible couplings allow controlled angular, linear and rotational movement, which accommodates pipeline deflection as well as thermal expansion and contraction.

Green Buildings II TECHNOLOGY this reduces the mechanical room footprint. But space saving is not the only advantage: there are cost benefits too. When it comes to installation, avoiding an extra spool between valves means the job is completed more quickly so labour costs are reduced.
and greater hydraulic noise within the pump casing. To reduce the effects of turbulence before the water enters the centrifugal action of the pump impeller, suction pipes are typically kept as long and straight as possible before the connection onto the pump flange. Yet creating long lengths of pipe does not sit well with modern design trends which aim to keep mechanical rooms simple and compact. Where a bend is connected directly onto the pump suction, the water flow may spin in opposite directions within the eye of the impeller. Pump energy then has to be spent correcting this action before producing the expected performance. Inevitably, both flow and pressure measurements will be less than those expected at the design stage. A simple alternative is to fit a type of strainer called a suction diffuser. A suction diffuser straightens out the spinning fluid created by the change in direction (bend) and enables pipework to be connected closer to the pump at a 90-degree angle. Eliminating long pipe runs, elbows and reducers makes for a smaller mechanical room footprint and optimum pump performance. Designing mechanical rooms with grooved valves achieves similar space savings. Traditionally, check valves and butterfly valves need a spool piece between them to avoid damage to the valves. Having grooved check valves, close-coupled to grooved butterfly valves, eliminates the use of flanged spool pieces on the pump dressings and cuts out the need for flange adapters. Again,

Less risk Driving down costs is a key objective for contractors. Whilst material costs are relatively easy to fix, labour costs are more volatile, leaving contractors open to significant labour risk on project costing. The grooved mechanical system reduces that risk by a large factor and competes favourably on total installed costs because a larger proportion of the total cost is fixed. When other joining methods are used, typically 70 per cent of costs are subject to variation making it difficult to estimate, which means a greater risk to the project budget. A grooved mechanical system with a quick and simple joining method and no need for jobsite preparation offers considerable costsaving opportunities on installation. Time spent on the jobsite is a critical cost factor, leading contractors to prefabricate as much as possible offsite. Prefabrication offers major productivity gains and labour efficiencies – especially when there is limited space on site. Creating a controlled working environment enables the optimum organisation of work and utilisation of skills, facilitating the highest standard of workmanship and reducing material waste. The Victaulic grooved system lends itself to prefabrication, since pipes can be cut and grooved offsite and valves fitted to pump assemblies ready for final assembly in the field as needed. Working in such a way avoids the risk of loss or damage to components on the jobsite, whilst reduced material handling lowers the potential for accidents. Time savings Ease and speed of installation are key benefits of grooved mechanical room installations, since just two nuts and bolts are needed to form a secure joint. Compared with the multiple nuts and bolts on a flanged strainer, depending on size, suction diffusers are upto three times faster to install. Once installed, the grooved system provides for quality control through visual confirmation of proper installation. Metal-to-metal bolt
pad connection indicates that the joint is properly made and avoids time-consuming X-ray tests. A system that uses grooved pipe-joining technology can be flushed out and cleaned in a fraction of the time needed for a system joined by other methods. When pieces of equipment need to be disconnected from the system – for instance to avoid flushing dirty water through a chiller – this can be done quickly and simply. A temporary by-pass around a chiller that might take several days on a welded system can be avoided with the grooved system and the task completed in a few hours. When it comes to cleaning filters and strainers after flushing, access is much quicker and easier through the loosening of two nuts and bolts and the way the filter is positioned in the strainer makes is easy to extract. Modifications to pipework which may be required at any stage during the project can be completed with similar ease. Tasks such as changing out a filter or replacing a pump can be done in minutes rather than hours. Conclusion Switching from welded and flanged specifications to the grooved method for mechanical room installations can make a big difference to the success of a project. And its use is becoming more widespread. Because manufacturers of pumps and some other types of equipment have come to realise the advantages of grooved technology, many now offer a grooved outlet as a standard option. Not only does it make for easier product testing in the factory, but manufacturers know that having a grooved connection reduces the likelihood of additional forces on the equipment that could damage it. Engineers, contractors and owners all stand to gain from Victaulic grooved systems. Design engineers can realise space savings; contractors can make time and cost savings to achieve on-time, on-budget hand-over to the client; owners get an efficient, reliable system which is easy to maintain. It should focus on a harmonious integration of the socio-cultural understanding and the eco-system of that particular space. We, at Anchor Panasonic, believe in building sustainable communities using the group strength in all areas of life. There are many controversies on LEED certification, which is criticised for poor model of energy efficiency. How do you look into this matter? Energy-efficiency is not just the responsibility of LEED certification. On one side, it is offering an avenue and the chance to bring more eco-friendly materials and eco-friendly lifestyle to develop eco-friendly constructions. The need of the hour is to spread a word about how energy can be conserved, and the new government is aggressively driving this change through several initiatives. Govt launches portal to aid cement supply for road construction The portal provides a buyer-seller platform without any intermediary
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched a web portal which will facilitate the monitoring of the supply of cement and expedite the process of placing purchase orders by the prospective users/ user agencies with the respective cement manufacturers. The portal, designed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways would ensure complete transparency in the supply of cement under the scheme, so as to achieve reduction in the cost of construction of rigid pavement. INAM-PRO is a web-based application (www.inampro.nic.in) for infrastructure and materials providers and would act as a common platform for Infrastructure materials providers viz. cement companies, infrastructure providers, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and other stakeholders. To start with, it would facilitate contractors or cement buyers engaged in executing the central or state funded roads and highways, bridge construction projects to place cement orders online with the registered cement companies offering cement at competitive rates in the vicinity of project execution locations.
Construction Chemical Solution for the Precast Concrete Industry
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gadkari said that the portal is a revolutionary initiative in the direction of reducing cost of road construction and maintenance. “As cement is manufactured indigenously and bitumen is a by-product of imported crude oil, the use of cement for national highways is in right earnest with the ‘Make in India’ campaign,” he added. He further said that this platform aims not only to bring down the cost of inputs for the infrastructure projects but also to create a win- win situation for all the stakeholders. In his address, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Vijay Chhibber said that the portal provides a buyer-seller platform without any intermediary. “With a focus on cement industry, this innovation would make the factories utilise their capacity to full potential,” he added. The bids of 36 participating cement companies quoting rates from 103 factories along with ‘terms and conditions governing the supply of cement’ have been uploaded on the Ministry’s website. Cement companies are facilitated to update their offered stock on the portal with the prices agreed upon with the Ministry. They would in turn get instant intimation about the orders placed and would be able to approve the delivery schedules as requested by the cement buyers without hassles and delays. This would also help cement companies plan their annual production in advance and schedule deliveries with better precision. n

CENTRILIT NC
Concrete additive based on pozzolanic alumosilicate Centrilit NC (nano-crystallizer) is a pozzolanic concrete additive based on amorphous alumosilicate. It concerns a synthetically manufactured material, not an industrial by-product. Apart from a high uniformity a long-term availability is also ensured. New generation Materials like Centrilit NC based on special nano-crystallizers have been recently developed. These new materials improve the properties that are crucial for the durability of high-performance concrete. In addition to reducing chloride migration, an exceptional chemical and acid resistance of the high-performance concrete can be achieved with Centrilit NC. The concrete structure is simultaneously reinforced right down to nano-scale, density is improved and compressive and flexural strength as well as abrasion resistance of the high-performance concrete is increased. The unique properties of Centrilit NC can be utilised in all areas of readymade and pre-cast concrete production that need high durability, e.g.: precast concrete, HPC in the energy, wastewater and chemical industry. Due to high homogeneity and reduced tackiness compared with microsilicabased concrete, workability is improved significantly. In many instances this even enables the production of high-performance concrete that can be pumped. A distinct improvement of the building structure’s aesthetics is gained due to the fair appearance of the concrete surface. Advantages of using Centrilit NC in concrete • Increased compressive and flexural strengths • Reduced permeability (including chloride permeability), Increased resistance to chemical attack and hence Increased durability • Reduced potential for efflorescence, which occurs when calcium is transported by water to the surface where it combines with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to make calcium carbonate, which precipitates on the surface as a white residue. • Reduced effects of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) • Enhanced workability, Better pumpabilty and finishing of concrete • Reduced shrinkage in concrete, due to “particle packing” making concrete denser • Improved color by lightening the color of concrete making it possible to tint lighter integral color. • Endless quantities as it is a Factory made Homogenous product • Reduced dosage of superplasticizer. MC-Bauchemie (India) Pvt. Ltd., an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, manufactures this product alongwith a host of other construction chemicals in technical and financial collaboration with MC-Bauchemie, Germany.
