Anti-collision tower cranes: the revolution Workspace
safety is gaining prime importance in today’s industry, and the construction industry has already a reputation of being accident-prone. No doubt, the industry is following the motto: safety first is safety always. One of the most useful equipment in the construction work is tower crane, which has been revolutionised with innovation in both power and loadcontrol systems. We have discussed with several leading crane manufacturers and discovered how the tower crane industry has made revolution in safety.
Never before importance “The importance of tower crane anticollision systems in today’s construction industry is higher than it has ever been before,” says Lingaraju M S, General Manager, Tower Crane, Anupam Industries Ltd. He continues, “Nowadays, while a lot of emphasis is being given on safety in all fields, there is a legislation

in the international level through OHSAS-18001, enforcing more and more safety regulations, particularly in construction.” According to Rajeev Kumar, CEO Crane Division, DCS Techno Services Pvt. Ltd., “Very soon it [safety] becomes the need for the market, and the reason being is day-by-day project site complexity due to innovative designs.” Mr Kumar also sounds little concerned because most of the cranes is left on-site at the mercy of crane operator judgement, whereas it’s very difficult for any individual to focus on safety if more than one crane or equipment working at the same site.
Technology for tower cranes In congested metro cities, it is not uncommon to see multiple tower cranes working in close proximity to one another, either on neighbouring sites or within the same site. Special care must be taken to ensure that these cranes are kept clear of each other’s working envelopes; however, it is not

always possible to isolate the working envelopes or areas of multiple cranes. In such cases, it is prudent to invest in an anti-collision system to monitor multiple cranes and prevent untoward incidences. “Modern anti-collision systems give live data to crane operators through an LCD screen mounted in their cabins,” explains Tushar Mehendale, Managing Director, ElectroMech. “These systems include a central computer integrated

the busy and crowded job sites they will encounter.” Manitowoc has joined hands with and anti-collision technology specialist Ascorel and developed the top tracing II anti-collision system which is a step forward for the tower crane industry.

with multiple sensors and wireless communication equipment. Data about each crane, obstacles and other limitations can be fed into the system through a user-friendly interface. The data is relayed to the individual tower cranes wirelessly and changes can be made on the fly.” Manitowoc Cranes is also delighted that anti-collision technology for tower cranes is on the rise. “If two or more tower cranes overlap on a job site, you need the technology — it’s as simple as that,” says Gurdeep Singh, Country Manager - Crane Care, Manitowoc Cranes. He also emphasises, “Tower crane users in India are becoming more aware of the need for anti-collision systems, but we can always do more. We want to promote the technology and ensure that every tower crane in India is prepared for

Present innovations As safety has become a key area that requires focus, the industry is coming up with innovative safety features and solutions, every day. Mr Mehendale mentions three unique technologies: tower crane anti-collision protection, zone (obstacle) anti collision and boundary protection. In the first technology, if the cranes operate at the same height, the system can detect the location of the jibs and prevent collisions through alarms or restricting motion. If cranes operate at different heights, the position of the hook of the higher one is used to predict collisions with the structure of the crane at the lower level. With zone (obstacle) anti-collision, systems can detect up to 10 prohibited zones in which the hook or jib are not allowed to operate. Where as in boundary protection, up to 30 points can be set to record a boundary, beyond which the hook will not be permitted to operate.

the tower crane remain in the operator’s control until safe working distances are breached.”
Safety norms There are different products in market for anti-collision of crane. Bharat Brahmbhatt, Head - Projects, RNA Corp., advocates that every system for tower cranes should comply with all prevailing regulations. He explains, “Only suitably qualified and authorised person should carry out installation, setting and maintenance of same. Site manager must make
Avoiding collisions In a construction project, many a time it can be seen that there are multiple tower cranes without much room to manoeuvre loads through. The result? Collisions. While talking about avoiding collisions, Mr Lingaraju shares, “When the risk of collision is detected, the anticollision system calculates the relative distance in real time between collision paths, and alerts both the operator and neighbouring cranes via an LCD monitor as well as audibly. If the operator doesn’t react to the signal, the anti-collision system will slow down or shall stop the motions to avoid entering a forbidden area and shall allow a reverse movement to prevent the collision. problems arising from the risk of collision between hoist ropes of an overflying crane and jib and counter jib of crane below.” Mr Brahmbhatt also talks about its zoning function. He adds, “This system is not intended to substitute for the judgment of crane operator rather it is designed to provide as many indications as possible to enable operator to adjust his behaviour in accordance with the situation encountered. The crane movement will only ever be slowed down or disabled, if continued it would risk breaching the safety boundaries by the system. System constantly informs the operator the position of crane jib radius, slewing angle, travelling distance, warning light or alarm will indicate dangerous movement. It also indicates position of other crane (in case site is using no. of cranes) or any fixed objects nor by jibs.”
Only suitably qualified and authorised person should carry out installation, setting and maintenance of same Bharat Brahmbhatt, Head - Projects, RNA Corp.
Safety vs profit Ravin Wadhawan, Director - Terex Cranes India, sees safety as independent to profit or growth. To him, safety is an absolute thing, not a relative variable. “If our team members or customers don’t come back safely home after working, nothing else matters,” he assures. n
Terex AC 40 City lifts ground-level container offices A
t first glance, this project didn’t look particularly challenging, but when taking into account all the jobsite restrictions, crane service provider Schmidbauer realised that it needed to execute a high-precision masterpiece. Stacking-containerised offices can be an everyday task, but when this is carried out indoors and with minimum space to maneuver, it’s another thing. For this

job, Schmidbauer used a crane that is globally known to work in tight spaces — the Terex AC 40 City crane. In addition to the lack of space, the project held another challenge: in order not to disturb the production work at the logistics warehouse, all lifts would have to be carried out during a single Saturday. This is where the Terex AC 40
City crane’s ease of mobilisation and fast assembly proved to be invaluable. The team was able to drive the crane to the jobsite and set it up in just 30 minutes. The mission was to stack 16 containers inside the building. To be able to perform the lifts despite the lack of space, the Schmidbauer team mounted a runner with the maximum possible off-set directly on the crane’s main boom. In addition, they forewent a hoist rope and used swivel hooks instead. This made it possible for the AC 40 City to literally put the 6-metre long, 2.5-tonne containers in chains at all four corners and then lift them using a radius of about 10 metres. “With this configuration, I was able to bring the upper containers to the required height and then set them down on the lower ones without running into the ceiling structure or into any lighting fixtures or pipes,” said crane operator Steffen Jaenecke. n

he new Demag E22-C travel drive — which is used for DC chain hoists running on I-beam girders and for the KBK light crane system — features more precise travel characteristics. A key feature of the new E22-C travel drive is the control and detection of the motor speed via a separate rotary encoder, which facilitates master/slave operation. In this mode, one of the two travel drives is preselected as the master unit. This unit receives the speed command via the control pendant of the chain hoist and communicates the speed reference value to the slave drive. This arrangement enables very good

Escorts pick-and-carry cranes: cost-effective solution for Indian market T
he demand for pick-and-carry cranes wasn’t impressive till 1998. As the demand suddenly improved after that, Escorts took a huge step by launching higher tonnage pick-and-carry cranes. In an exclusive interview with B2B Purchase, Rajinder Raina shares how easily Escorts has surged ahead in the pick-and-carry crane segment.
“We, as a leader in crane industry, are gearing ourselves for the expected upswing in demand and to offer newer, improved models that deliver the desired results,” says Rajinder Raina, General Manager - Marketing, Escorts Construction Equipment
Escorts is one of the leading players in the Indian mobile crane market. Could you share your perception on the pick-and-carry cranes market? Escorts is the pioneer of mobile cranes in the Indian market. The Escorts Hydra cranes started mechanisation in material handling in India. The pick-andcarry cranes were developed for the Indian market, a cost-effective solution in a cheap manual handling market. The market grew at a very low pace till 1998, and there was a sudden surge in demand. This was the time when Escorts launched higher tonnage pick-andcarry cranes as well as customised. The market has matured, and Escorts has led the way by moving the market from high-cost low tonnage to hightonnage multiple/versatile usage. Safety, stability, operator comfort, speed, productivity, and cost of owning and operating feature high on USPs.
How much does this segment contribute to your total construction equipment business? Pick-and-carry business constitutes about 50 per cent of our revenues today. However, with our growing backhoe loader business, this percentage is going to get reduced. Which category of pick-and-carry crane has better penetration level in Indian market-Hydra or TRX and why? Indian crane market is predominantly rental market. The retail rental hirers, in particular, will continue with pick-andcarry cranes. However for all projects applications, TRX is the preferred crane. Escorts developed this crane understanding the importance of safety, productivity and reliability. At most of the projects only safe cranes like TRX are allowed. 30 per cent of the total cranes sold last year were TRX series. This year the ratio of TRX Series is going to go up from 30 per cent to 40 per cent of our total cranes sales. The reason for acceptability is primarily safety of man and material delivered by TRX cranes, that too with high productivity and reliability. Projects have zero tolerance for accidents, premium for completion before or on time and nonaffordability of delays because of cost

JLG introduces world’s 1st four-wheel electric-drive hybrid boom (less than 69 decibels) and produces fewer carbon emissions.
J
LG Industries Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company and a global manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telescopic material handlers, has introduced the world’s first true four-wheel electric-drive hybrid boom H340AJ. The product was displayed at CONEXPO 2014 in Las Vegas. Combining diesel fuel and an electric power system, JLG H340AJ provides the power and durability of a diesel-powered machine while saving operational costs. In fact, compared to an all-diesel machine, H340AJ provides substantial fuel savings. It is also quieter 20
“This innovative lift is designed to perform on par with its diesel powered alternative. It’s an extremely hard-working machine,” explained Jeff Ford, Global Product Director - Aerial Work Platforms, JLG Industries. “The JLG H340AJ has four independent electric-drive motors that provide unprecedented rough terrain performance and rely on an eco-friendly, Tier-4 diesel-powered generator for recharging. Electric power is stored in eight 6V batteries, each requiring less recharging time than lead acid batteries. Because the machine can run on all-electric power, it uses less diesel fuel than an all-diesel machine, reducing overall operational costs. Customers also benefit from the H340AJ’s durability. Whether in twowheel drive (standard) or four-wheel drive (optional), the hybrid boom
can operate in harsh environments, including muddy and rugged terrain. A steel hood increases the boom’s durability, making it ideal for general contractors, facility managers, painters, and electrical contractors, among others. In addition, the JLG H340AJ requires less maintenance—thanks to brushless AC motors. The variable-speed motors operate smoothly and quietly, and feature proportional control. When the operator adjusts the controls in the platform, the hybrid boom makes a smooth, gradual transition from start to maximum travel speed (3.1 mph) and anything in between. The result is a smooth ride for the operator. Direct AC electric drive reduces the number of hydraulic hoses and fittings as well as the potential for leaks. In terms of access, the hybrid boom features a platform height of nearly 34 feet, a 17foot up-and-over reach and a platform capacity of 500 pounds. n

over-runs, penalty and reputation of the contracting companies. This will ask for not only TRX cranes but the improved and customised variants of the same.
What are the parameters to be considered while purchasing a pickand-carry crane? Pick-and-carry cranes should be purchased on several parameters like application, usage, product quality, after-sales support, resale value after 3 years etc. The myth is that pick-and-carry cranes are accident prone. What’s your take on this? Pick-and-carry cranes are designed for specific applications. The problem is with the wrong use/abuse of the crane. The moment it is made to perform what

it is not supposed to, accidents are bound to happen. For example, it is not the right crane for metro projects. It is a safe for the usage it is designed for but not for every application.
What are the safety features included in your latest pick-and-carry cranes? A lot of improvements have been made to enhance safety while operation and movement. The geometry of the crane has been altered so that load is handled within safer profile, the visibility of the load being handled and the operational area from the operator cabin is much better. Have the option of safe load indicator and various other features. Could you brief us about your latest crane in this category? We are currently in a consolidation
mode. The tonnage and the lifting range are looked together to offer an improved load chart that offers higher yet safer load handling capacity. We’ll improve most of the cranes by September 2014. We’ll gradually phase out some of the slow moving models.
What are the new developments expected from Escorts in its pickand-carry cranes category? It would be a bit premature to give the details of the products that Escorts is working upon. Suffice it to say that we are working on higher tonnage cranes and configuration that will find increasing acceptance in major projects. We, as a leader in crane industry, are gearing ourselves for the expected upswing in demand and to offer newer, improved models that deliver the desired results. n

GCP 3709Z is the longest boom pump in its class with a maximum vertical reach of 37 metres and a four-arm Z-fold type boom, mountable on a 3-axle chassis. The power for operation of boom pump is taken from the truck engine through PTO system which eliminates the maintenance and weight of the slave engine. There are several advantages to having a Z-type fold boom. The Z-fold boom is easy to manoeuvre having increased flexibility and faster horizontal movement. It requires less unfolding height and is highly suitable for working in areas where space is a constraint. The powerful pumping performance of Greaves boom pump is due to the superior S-valve pumping technology. The S-valve is made of special wearresistant steel and the wear ring and plate are made of tungsten carbide which reduces the wear and tear thus ensuring smooth controllable operation. Application areas • The daily output is not over 300 -350 cubic metres for average thickness slabs and about 425 cubic metres per work shift for airport works • The work is demanding narrow work areas; the machine works barely 2 feet more than the slab width in most cases • The narrow 14-foot machine can be “extended” with extra attachments at site to steps of 2-4 feet to a maximum of 20 feet and more with an upgrade model offering wider pours up to 10 metres in a single pass • The job site like airports where the concrete flow is slow and the work in panels are to be cast • For city roads where the use of tippers is very difficult and transit mixers unload the mix in a few minutes. Evenly spaced vibrators effectively work at desired angles to use the same machine for industrial floors for 50mm slabs to 480 mm as used in MIAL Airport speaks volumes on flexibility on application of this versatile machine and method together • More than 1 source of providing concrete often results in variation when slipforming. Whereas in
fixed form paving defects if any for inconsistency and inadequate accuracy of batching etc are “contained within” the forms and then allowed to get settled for 10 hours resulting in crisp edges which otherwise would have resulted in defects like edge drop etc commonly observed whilst slipforming. • The work involves shorter work stretch as in industrial lanes and city lanes, making the large and bulky slipform difficult to move around and “catching a new lane” would mean manually doing the first 6- 8 metres in most cases and the same to leave out 1 metre or such near medians, ensuring that the large slipform is allowed to move away from the end. The CD 255 with gang mounted vibrators can start and end without any difficulty at all • Very low skill of operators available and average maintenance skill of oil change is sufficient for CD 255 operations vs highly skilled manpower requirements for any slipform paver operations • The operations cost is also a fraction as an average consumption of 5- 6 litters of diesel per hour vs 35-50 litres consumed for a slipform paver. With the knowledge and experience of over 4 decades in construction and over 16 years of construction equipment selling, BRDC will leave no stone unturned to satisfy the needs of the customers’ specific needs. n Contact:

Right Highlights • Earlier possession of the building provides faster ROI • Large unsupported spans • Steel construction allows slender columns resulting in maximising floor area • Advantages include excellent strength to weight ratio resulting in lower foundation costs • Economic methods for shaping and curving • PEB allow off-site manufacture resulting in less site activity • Bolted and connections are generally exposed and therefore are simple to check for quality • Steel buildings can be relocated or recycled once its use has been overtaken by events. • Steel structures have relatively good fatigue strength • Steel can be reused after a structure is disassembled • Steel structures in general can be repaired quickly and easily • Steel structures can be erected quite rapidly • Very less labour is required as compared to conventional RCC buildings.
behaviour,” explains Anjan Dutta Roy, Vice President, Tiger Steel Engineering (I) Pvt. Ltd. “This feature gains importance under dynamic loads. Under repeated exposure to loads, reinforced concrete’s single direction and limited energy absorption ability diminishes and fails after each exposure and breaks appear without any deformation. In steel buildings on the other hand, when elastic boundaries are exceeded, or when the building is exposed to loads more than expected, steel construction members first deform, thanks to their high capacity of deformation. Energy is absorbed during deformation and the building remains erected. It should be carefully considered that beam-column connections have the sufficient moment capacity to transfer loads in steel constructions.”
Energy efficient “Steel is a green product,” explains Mr Srivastava. “Steel buildings are structurally sound and tolerant, along with being energy efficient. Any excess material is 100 per cent recyclable.” Metal buildings are easy to install too as steel does not warp or buckle, twist or bend, and thus, can be easily modified.
High strength/weight ratio Steel’s high strength/weight ratio makes dead weight of steel structures relatively small. This property makes steel a very attractive structural material for high-rise buildings, long-span bridges, structures located on soft ground, and structures located in highly seismic areas.

resistance, steel structures are still cost effective and require less maintenance.
Ductility “Steel can undergo large plastic deformation before failure,” explains Mr Verma. “This property is referred to as ductility. A ductile structure has energy-absorbing capacity and will not incur sudden failure. It usually shows large visible deflections before failure or collapse.” No risk of error Mr Dutt believes that using metal building means there is rarely any risk of error as these frame members are manufactured and controlled at factory and can be assembled very easily. By using structural steel in the load bearing system, various geometrical forms can be designed, which is not possible with other materials. As technological innovations are creating waves in the every aspect of the industry — including metal buildings — more and more people are demanding it. No doubt, metal structures are going to be the right choice for more and more applications in future. n
PEB
EXPERT COLUMN
Why to choose PEB structures? P
re-engineered buildings concept was introduced in India in late 1980s and gradually recognised as a favourable method of construction over conventional methods. The importance of PEB is increasing immensely, and it is preferred by industrial organisations as its features are unique and attractive. The designing of PEB structures is effectively simple and quick, and design standards are basic. PEB construction usually takes an average of 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the complexity and requirement of the building. As the construction is lightweight, it is easy for portability/ shipping of the manufactured materials to any site. During the installation of the structure, the need of manpower is less compared to other constructions like concrete or conventional. It is easier for modification as the construction is built with steel on-site location with no damage and less cost consumption. The unique feature of PEB structures is seismic retrofit. The unusual behaviour of PEB is minimising the seismic effect and maintaining stable flexibility in the structure during earthquake to support the building because steel is heavier than concrete and can carry six times of its own weight.
PEB buildings are provided with anti-corrosion galvalume sheets used for roofing and wall cladding. The steel used for the construction has capacity to retain heat reflectivity. As PEB is multifaceted to concrete for future scope, PEB stands strong among other structures. n Authored by—

INDUSTRY SPEAKS
AviGiri reaching mountain high in rubber gaskets market S
ince AviGiri started its journey 25 years back in Dubai, it has redefined the rubber gaskets market. In an interview with B2B Purchase, Giridhar Pai shares how they have maintained their commitment to quality and service.
“The journey so far has been very inspirational and educational; however, I do believe the journey is not over yet,” emphasises M.V. Pai, Managing Director, Avigiri Urethene and Rubber Industries Pvt. Ltd.
Having over 25 years of experience in the rubber industry, AviGiri has established itself in the rubber gaskets market. How do you look at the journey? Looking back, I would say that I was very fortunate in how things turned out. There was definitely a supernatural helping hand, but I would also credit it to hardwork and persistence. We began this journey in Dubai, where I had set up a small unit for re-rubberisation of rollers, and our main raw material was polyurethane. However, with an increasing demand for rubber products in the off-shore oil and gas industry, we began diversifying our product range. This was our first stepping stone toward where we are now. We branched out into SBR, NR, neoprene, nitrile and other forms of rubber and slowly established ourselves in the market as a reputed industry. This expansion led to a realisation of EPDM requirements in India. This was our driving force of setting up a unit in South India. From all those years, we have still maintained our commitment to quality and service. What we sincerely believe is that there will always be competition in the market; however, the only way to distinguish yourself from the competitor is in the kind of service you are able to provide. Customers appreciate a manufacturer’s commitment to his product such that any complaint is immediately appraised and rectified.

Another aspect is maintaining quality. In India, especially, you see a very profitable market in the low-quality sector, but we refuse to lower our quality to capitalise on this market. In the long run, people will only trust your product, if you are able to consistently provide the quality you promise. Changing your quality to suit the customers’ needs makes you seem fickle, and people will lose respect for your product. The journey so far has been very inspirational and educational; however, I do believe the journey is not over yet. We still have a long way to go. With a capable management and production team, we are sure to be in the market for at least another 25 years.
How do you view the technological innovation in rubber gaskets segment? I can answer this with an example: our factory in Dubai has over 75 employees. However, our factory in Tumkur, India, was set up in 2012 with only 10 employees. How is this possible if not for technological innovations? A visit to our factory will impress any potential client. We have a stateof-the-art German design Continuous Vulcanisation line. This is the first of its kind in South India. We have a quality laboratory with a Universal tensile machine, oscillating disc rheometer, muffle furnace, specific gravity tester and profile projectors. This ensures that we are able to test our products in-house without relying on outside sources. This would not have been possible a few years, which would have made in-house testing more expensive. Technological innovations have made it possible for us to develop everything in-house, from dies to moulds, from tools to CNC wire-cutting 46

machines. The rubber industry has been continuously evolving for the past 300 years, and with this ever-evolving need for rubber, it doesn’t seem like this will stop. We are quite excited to see future innovations that we can invest in to further increase our product range.
What are the products you offer for construction sector? We manufacture EPDM sealing solutions for the construction sector. Our primary focus is on gaskets for windows and doors. This could be either uPVC or aluminium windows and sliding doors. Gasket quality plays an integral part in the window’s properties. For example, only with accurate fitment of quality gaskets can window manufacturers guarantee sound proofing, temperature control and energy efficiency. We are currently in the process of trying to educate window manufacturers to not compromise on quality of gaskets during purchase. Often, gaskets are seen as the least visible part; therefore, many window manufacturers assume that they can save costs in that area. However, we are trying to emphasise that using gaskets of high quality can actually complement the guarantee that window/door manufacturers offer. This is essential because if there is not
proper sealing, consumers will blame the entire window, not just the gaskets. Therefore to maintain their name, it is essential to support quality.
Could you discuss the advantages of microwave-cured EPDM gaskets over conventional cured gaskets? Microwave-cured gaskets offer a suite advantages. These gaskets are produced and cured in continuous lengths; therefore, they are straight with no dimensional variations. Microwavecured gaskets imply quality because no additional fillers are used to reduce the compound cost, which results in a superior extruded product. The curing is done at very high temperatures; therefore, the properties are better. It is an automated process, with no human interferences, which yields a very high output with no dimensional variations. This method is also highly effective for producing high-quality sponge and silicon profiles. All of our product dispatches come with a material test certificate and a 10-year guarantee against cracks, discolouration, and loss in tensile strength.
What is your present manufacturing capability? Our current manufacturing capability is 100 tonnes per month. Our state-
of-the-art continuous vulcanisation line ensures that no matter what is the quantity, we are able to produce it without any profile variations. This ensures that from the first metre till the last, the gaskets properties and dimensions are exactly as requested by the customer.
Please brief us on your expansion plans. We have several plans in the works for expansion. We are currently thinking of importing some new machines such as a co-extruder to ensure that we are able to supply to the entire range of gaskets required by window/ door manufacturers both locally and internationally. In addition, we are in talks with some foreign firms to set up joint venture in foreign markets. We would also like to more actively dive into the auto sector. Physical expansion has already been anticipated, and we are already in the process of purchasing new land to accommodate all the new machines we plan to install. AviGiri has shown tremendous growth, where in 1 year our daily production has increased from 100 kgs to 2.5 tonnes per day. In order to cater to the continuous demand, it is essential that we step up our game and seriously focus on planned expansions. n

Metal building industry in a technology shift T
echnology is all pervasive. This is what Rohit Ranjan, General Manager - Marketing, Tata BlueScope Building Solutions, has to say about metal building industry’s shift toward technology. Technology is moving fast — even faster than what we’re thinking about metal building technology.
Pre-engineered building and India “The journey of pre-engineered building in India is remarkable in such a short span of time,” says Gautam Suri, CTO and Founder, Interarch Building Products Pvt. Ltd. “The Indian PEB market was growing at a slow pace but now experiencing a demand shift due to advancement in technology, recent infrastructure development and the increasing popularity of steel buildings in the industrial sector.” Metal buildings have emerged as the next best thing — whether it’s a small garage, industrial warehouse, hangar, or commercial structure, metal buildings are getting all the importance. Pankaj Srivastava, COO, Maitreya Realtors & Construction Pvt. Ltd., explains their importance in details. He says, “Earlier what used to be considered as exception is now a common thing.

He adds, “In recent times, the focus has expanded to leveraging technology for better project management.” According to Srivastava, “The metal building industry has always been a technologically advanced, but off-late there has been a technology shift seen in the industry which has bettered it in many ways. Automation is revolutionising the entire industry, bringing a sea change the ways we work. In spite of being dominated by skilled tradesmen, the metal building industry has welcomed this change. On account of automation, this already fast-paced industry has gained more momentum. Design can directly be transferred to the shop-floor using customised programs. These ensure faster and error free production of the several components that make up a metal building. As a result, we are consistently able to deliver excellence in our engineered building solutions.

“With this software (AutoCAD) you can change a wired framed drawing into a 3D design in seconds,” he explains. “Images play a very important role in this industry and thus, this software become important. This feature allows you to visualise the finished product and gives you the flexibility of moving around it and switch angles. It also provides you multiple views and presents the exact visuals of what would be the final result. Another one is the Star Builder System (SBS), which helps builders make jobrelated estimations at a faster rate. All it takes is feeding the SBS system with the data of the project and it creates real-time renderings of the product. This feature helps builders customise their quotes for every project, all within minutes.”
The future In a short time, the journey of PEB in India is remarkable; however, the industry is still in its infancy. Over the past 6 years there has been a growth in this sector due to increasing awareness amongst consultants and customers.

“India to be happy hunting ground for prefab structures” P
refab structures, usually made of steel and can be erected very fast, come with unmatched durability and are relocatable many times over. No wonder, people are choosing prefab construction instead of conventional construction. In an exclusive interview with B2B Purchase, Nilesh Jadhav shares why the prefab industry is set to rise in India.
“We think that there are great opportunities to make further inroads for new product categories in the prefab structures market,” explains Nilesh Jadhav, Founder, inpod
What do you think about the current prefab structure market? Prefab structures in India currently are predominantly aimed at business customers, and they are doing exceptionally well at the moment. They are used as site offices on construction sites as well as offshore projects, factory offices and many more such similar purposes where they are fast, convenient and easy to install. People are seeing the utility and convenience offered by prefab construction and businesses with time as an important parameter are opting for prefab instead of conventional construction. These prefab buildings are usually made of steel and can be erected very fast. However, there seems to be little or no development in the use of prefab

structures on the residential front. Prefab homes in India are still in a stage of infancy, whereas the western consumer is already extremely well versed with the nature of prefab structures. Their use for residential purposes and benefits give them over conventional methods.
How sustainable are prefab structures? Conventional construction methods still use the techniques of pre-industrial revolution era. Prefab construction is a direct result of techniques learned and developed through industrialisation, such as fabrication of elements and manufacturing of parts which are then used in construction. As a result, the energy footprint of prefab buildings tends to be lower than the buildings made using conventional construction methods. We, at inpod, even go a step further to incorporate mass production and assembly line manufacturing processes in the construction of buildings. We make portable buildings of the highest quality and unmatched durability which are reusable and relocatable many times over. Thus, we have tried to take the sustainability factor of the prefab

exactly the house that they want and buy it as a product from inpod.
Do you see any opportunities for prefab structures to expand its scope in India? India is going to be a happy hunting ground for prefab structures in the foreseeable future. The main factor is that construction needs for industrial as well as residential sectors are not going to be met by conventional construction alone. As a result the prefab industry is set to rise. The residential market has not been tapped to its full potential by the prefab industry, and inpod is focussing on striving to offer more and more revolutionary products to discerning consumers in this sector. inpod structures enhance the utility of a home by a magnitude that is 10 times more than what conventional construction methods offer. We think that there are great opportunities to make further inroads for new product categories in the prefab structures market. While second homes and resorts are our primary focus, retailing products such as kiosks and shop/in-shops are also a segment that we are currently exploring.
and prebuilt construction industry to a new level. The longer durability of materials as well as easy relocation and reusability of our products ensure that each inpod structure is value return for money to the buyer and society in general.
What is your design approach for these structures? With inpod, we were dealing with a material that has far superior qualities than anything the construction industry has seen before. However, it had not been used in construction of buildings significantly, or indeed, so extensively until now. The methods and technology incorporated in inpod structures is the first serious engagement of the petrochemical revolution with the construction industry, and we understood that a product that came
56

from such a technology had to be quite unique and different from anything else that was done before, in terms its utility, manufacturing process and design. As opposed to prefab structures whose parts are made at the factory and assembled/erected on-site, we decided to produce inpod structures just like cars are made — fully finished, factory built and ready to use. Factory manufacturing of all units until they are ready to use ensures the same level of quality and finish for every module; hence, no matter where you are you can have luxury homes and offices of the highest level delivered right to your doorstep. Thus, the design approach is fundamentally different from other buildings as we are aiming for the consumers who have no prior experience in construction and yet are able to choose
How do you envision the growth of prefab structures in near future? Conventional prefab will continue to do trade in the industry with need for rapid construction of structures which are unusual in size and cannot be achieved easily by conventional means such as RCC. inpod has taken an innovative approach to bring the power and convenience of prefabrication of buildings to the consumer market by offering a fully built product that can be assembled and installed on-site in hours or days (depending on the size) instead of other prefab structures which need from weeks to months for on-site erection and installation. As a result, a whole new market segment has opened up for prefab industry where the residential customers and developers (especially for second homes) will opt for pre-built homes such as inpod which are reliable, fast and high quality. n

Pre-engineered building systems: past and present The journey as to how PEBs have become a pre-dominant trend of construction in both commercial and residential section
The
scientific-sounding term preengineered buildings came into the limelight in the 1960s. Several factors made this period significant for the history of pre-engineered buildings. First, the improving technology was constantly expanding the maximum clear span capabilities of pre-engineered buildings. The first rigid-frame buildings introduced in the late 1940s could span only 40 feet. In a few years, it started spanning 50-, 60and 70-feet buildings. By the late 1950s, rigid frame comes with 100-feet spans made. In the late 1950s, ribbed metal panels became available, allowing the buildings to look different from old-tired corrugated appearance. Third-coloured panels were introduced by Stran-Steel in the early 1960s, permitting some design individuality. At the same time, continuous span cold form Z purlins were invented by Stran-Steel. Last but not the least, the first computer-designed metal buildings also made their debut in the early 1960s. With the advent of computerisation, the design possibilities became almost limitless. All these factors combine to produce a new metal building boom in the late 1950s and early 1960s. As long as the purchaser could be restricted to standard designs, the buildings could be properly called “pre-engineered”. Pre-engineered steel buildings use a combination of built-up sections, hot-rolled sections and cold-formed elements which provide the basic steel frame work with a choice of singleskin sheeting with added insulation or insulated sandwich panels for roofing and wall cladding. The concept is designed to provide a complete building envelope system which is air tight,

energy efficient, optimum in weight and cost and, above all, designed to fit users’ requirement. These pre-engineered steel buildings can be fitted with different structural accessories, including mezzanine floors, canopies, fascias, interior partitions, crane systems etc. The building is made water-tight by use of special mastic beads, filler strips and trims. This is a very versatile building system and can be finished internally to serve any required function and accessorised externally to achieve attractive, distinctive architectural styles. It is most suitable for any low-rise building and offers numerous benefits over conventional buildings. In developed countries like United States, use of PEBs is found as a predominant trend of construction in both commercial and residential section. However, we are yet to adapt to steel buildings for residential purposes in India. Today pre-engineered buildings are found in many applications like lowrise buildings ideal for offices, houses, schools, showrooms, shop fronts etc. The application of pre-engineered concept to low-rise buildings is very economical and speedy. Buildings can be constructed in less than half the normal time, especially when complimented with other engineered sub-systems. In this segment of residential construction, Next Steel Building Solutions has done some interesting projects such as Clover Dale School, KVK Gandheli Farmer Hostel, and KVK Gandheli Education Complex. Eventual changes can be attained in the
residential and commercial segments with the progress in technologies.
Advantages of Next PEBs Most PEBs are purchased by the private sectors, which seems to appreciate the advantages of proprietary preengineered buildings more readly than the public entities. • Low initial cost The use of tapered built-up primary structural members (columns and rafters) usually results in up to a 3040 per cent weight advantage for the main frame when compared to the use of hot-rolled sections as primary members. The foundation requirements of preengineered steel buildings are fewer and lighter. This is due to large clear span and long bay spacing. • Spacious Pre-engineered buildings are spacious, by use of tapered columns and long bay spacing. • Superior quality Next PEBs offer superior quality because these PEBs are designed by latest USA and IS codes. Only AWS certified welders performs the welding work. Next only uses raw materials are as per ASTM standard. • Fast project construction All structural members are field bolted, using user-friendly erection drawings. Standard building delivery is only 8 to 10 weeks. • Architectural versatility Next can go clear span up to 80 to 90
metres and standard bay spacing up to 7.5 to 9.0 metres along with eave height up to 30 metres. Its buildings are easily expandable on all sides (allowing for future expansions, and design can incorporate additional standard sub-system such as mezzanines, cranes etc. • Architectural flexibility Aesthetics features like fascias and canopy enhance the appearance of the buildings, and a range of wallpanel profiles and colours provides diverse architectural accents. • Low maintenance and operating costs No maintenance is required for wall panels, and roof sheets required only periodic cleanings. For eave gutters, annual washing is enough. • Relocation The buildings can be easily dismantled and relocated easily. • Energy efficient Next offers energy-efficient roof and wall system using insulations • Single-source responsibility The fact that a single party is responsible for the entire building envelope is among the main benefits of pre-engineered buildings. So the building owner or the construction manager does not have to keep track of many different suppliers or worry about one of them failing in the middle of constructions.
Applications of Next PEBs Pre-engineered steel buildings can be used in a range of applications. These are: • Factories • Warehouses • Workshops • Cold stores • Car park sheds • Showrooms • Supermarkets • Labour camps • Offices • Service stations • Schools • Exhibition halls • Hospitals • Aircraft hangar. For Next Steel Building Solution, customer satisfaction is its prime motto, and the company is committed to be preferred supplier of pre-engineered buildings that meet the requirements of quality and service. Its vision is to become most preferred turnkey steel building solutions provider in India. n Authored by— Ranjeet Kakkad, MD - PEB Division, Texas Lifestyle Furniture Pvt. Ltd. Picking the right glass Using glass in floor isn’t as easy as it sounds. “When considering glass as flooring material, designers must take in consideration the size of glass panes,” emphasises Rahul Miskeen, Vice President - Design & Planning, Glass Wall Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd. It is important to economise as well as lower the dead weight. The BS 63991:1996 code of practice for dead and imposed loads gives guidance on design loading. Mr Miskeen adds, “The maximum permitted centre span deflection of support under fully loaded may be estimated as L/500 and with minimum edge support depth of 20-30 mm.” As glass flooring is expensive after installation, architects prefer heat strengthened and annealed glass in glass flooring. However, Mr Miskeen suggests, “Toughened glass, although
With innovations and manufacturing advances, the building professionals are opting for a new, aesthetic alternative — fire-rated glass floors
stronger, is not generally considered suitable due to its breakage vulnerability at edges.”
Fire-rated flooring: new alternative The glass-flooring technology has come a long way. With everyday innovations and manufacturing advances, the building professionals are opting for a new, aesthetic alternative — fire-rated glass floors. Though glass has been used as flooring material since the late 19th century, fire-rated glass floors are new. The first fire-rated glass floor system was tested and approved in 2001.
Working procedure “Fire-rated glass floor systems typically contain three main components: top surface glass, a structural framing grid and fire-resistive-rated glass,” says Karam Hamadeh, Territory Manager -
PROCUREMENT STORY Middle East, Technical Glass Products (TGP). “This configuration allows the system to facilitate views and increase admissible daylight while supporting structural loads and blocking the spread of fire.” Mr Miskeen explains, “The firerated glass floor systems incorporate gel-filled fire-resistant glass which provides insulation, thus limiting heat transfer through to the structural glass. This enables the structural glass to carry applied load for the specified duration. In normal laminated flooring glass, the polyvinyl-butyral (PVB) membrane starts to soften above temperature of 150 C and melts completely by 250 C. This softening/ failure process under fire is relatively quick and could fail normal flooring glass in a period of 3-4 minutes under applied load in fire conditions.
Adequate fire defence Fire-rated glass systems require fire resistance to satisfy codes requiring a fire barrier between floors. While
talking about fire safety, Mr Hamadeh puts weights on protecting against the spread of flames, smoke and radiant and conductive heat. He emphasises, “To ensure adequate fire safety, verify that a third-party testing agency, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), has evaluated the fire-rated glass floor system in accordance with fireresistance tests like ASTM E-119, UL 263 and NFPA 251.” He explains, “Non-egress floor and roof applications typically require 60 to 90 minute fire-resistance ratings. Egress applications typically require 2-hour fire-resistance ratings.”
Maximising daylight Mr Hamadeh also suggests how to maximise light penetration. His advice includes aligning floors beneath light-admitting devices or placing them above open spaces in interiors. Glass floor colour and texturing options are also important in maximising daylight. According to Mr Hamadeh, these support aesthetic

Sauerland brings 50% thicker doors at 20% increased cost Sauerland launches a specially engineered door infill which enables door manufacturers to cater to the builders and architectural requirements at an incremental cost increase. A winwin situation now unfolds.
T
oday the competition has shrunk the door thickness to a meaningless 30 mm or 32 mm. The real artistic beauty, richness, warmth and glamour of the door lie in a 40/44mm door shutter. Worldwide, most commercial doors and quality are of this thickness range. In India, however, builders shy away from the thicker door as with primitive construction technology the cost exceeds 50 per cent of the 30-mm thickness. Sauerland launches a specially engineered door infill which enables door manufacturers to cater to the builders and architectural requirements at an incremental cost increase. A win-win situation now unfolds. The tubular infill boards are an eco-friendly, and green product initiative replacing the 80 per cent of timber used internally as door infill which dramatically improves the performance of the door.
Features: • Sound insulation: ensures privacy of sight and sound; reduction of 28db sound • Fire resistance: free of cost for 20 minutes • Security: impact resistance of 20 kg/sq. cm • Thickness tolerance: tolerance of +/-0.1mm, no telegraphing, no waviness • Weight reduction: 40 per cent lighter than solid • E-1 emission: safe for indoor use • Straightness: the door to maintain straightness under climatic variations • PEFC certified: sustainable supply chain of custody • Swelling in thickness: almost zero; long life for door. Sauerland launches a 34/38-mm tubular board which will be the heart of the 40/44-mm door with 3-mm skin both sides. The increase in the timber cost based on seasoned timber and the infill material will be incremental and now open new corridors of better décor and interiors within the housing segment. Many Indians still think the inside material has no role to play on the health of the door. It is just like thinking that the heart has no role in life of a human.

Waterproofing: what you didn’t know
Waterproofing is not only a key element in construction but also a saving grace

Waterproofing is to new constructions
as water is to life. It is also important during the preventive maintenance. The industry has identified that they are making their structures more vulnerable by ignoring waterproofing. Only good concrete and waterproof plasters aren’t enough. One should consider a physical barrier to ensure the water does not enter the building envelope and deteriorate structural or cosmetic elements.
Waterproofing: the process “Waterproofing is a process of making the structure impermeable to ingress of water and unwanted fluids, either in liquid or vapour form,” describes Deepak
Kanitkar, GM - Technology and Business Development, Chembond Chemicals Ltd. “To understand the requirements of any specific structure in consideration, a holistic approach is necessary.”
Waterproofing: the advantages There are two basic physical waterproofing: preformed membranes and slurry-applied membranes. While talking about these two membranes, Sunny Surlaker, Head - Admixtures Division, MC-Bauchemie India Pvt. Ltd., says, “Whilst having many advantages, preformed membranes have the inherent limitations such as overlapping joints and the difficulty of application across change in geometry of the structure.” Mr Surlaker is more vocal about slurry applied membranes, which help in overcoming the limitations faced by preformed membranes. “Slurry applied membranes are advantageous on account of their ease of application and mould ability to form seamless membranes over any structure,” he explains. “Polymermodified bituminous emulsions with

Jayakumar Jivraj Shah, an expert in waterproofing. “The main agency must carry out the work of waterproofing itself or get it done through its own sub-contractor instead of subletting it to an agency, considered expert in waterproofing.” According to Mr Kanitkar, above and underground areas of a structure — external and internal — need to be taken into account. He adds, “Suitable waterproofing depends on type of structure, climatic condition, expected life span, materials of construction, mode and techniques of construction, and usage conditions, amongst others.”
Waterproofing: the availability There are a suite of innumerable waterproofing products in the market. Surprisingly, everybody is claiming to be the best. According to Mr Surlaker, “The best waterproofing system is made of good base, good material and good application.”
The best waterproofing system is made of good base, good material and good application Sunny Surlaker, Head - Admixtures Division, MC-Bauchemie India Pvt. Ltd.
He also gives his views on how to pick the best waterproofing systems. He says, “The success of waterproofing system depends not only on the materials alone, but also more on application and understanding limitations of the materials in question. Rather than asking for guarantees from applicators, which has not stopped failures, the adherence to quality assurance systems should be reverted to.” n

The unique C3 — covering effective use of construction chemicals for enduring structures in construction chemicals — was inaugurated by chief guest Dr Nagesh Iyer, Director, CSIR, and Dr Prabhat Kurnar, CMD, Bhavini, was the guest of honour. In a glittering inaugural session, Samir Surlaker, President, Construction Chemicals Manufacturers Association (CCMA), welcomed all and invited delegates to play an interactive role. Dr Iyer in inaugural address exposed the audience as well as CCMA members to tremendous growth of construction chemicals in India. Dr Kumar explained the usage of construction chemicals in nuclear structures and invited CCMA to participate actively in the technological development. Construction Chemical Manufacturers Association is now over 50-member strong association, representing 80 per cent of revenue in a very short time construction chemicals manufacturers collaborating jointly to spread awareness and focus on right use of right chemicals. CCMA aims at standardising and marking construction chemicals products to give confidence to end users and construction industry. Not resting on laurels, CCMA plans further seminars all over India. A hand book on admixtures is planned on the right usage in collaboration with Indian Concrete Institute. Attempts are already on way to introduce the technical topics in the academic syllabi. Training programmes are in advance stages of design. With all this holistic approach, the industry is confident of growing from present revenue of about ` 3,000 crore to ` 5,000 crore in next 2-3 years. This is absolutely possible, considering the large gap in demand and supply. This growth is totally depended on government accepting construction chemicals as recognised industry and backs us with incentives and rationalisation of government taxes, duties and levies. C3 was a grand success as per feedback from participants. Next C3 is scheduled in February 2015 in Kolkata. n

Most ideal anti-rust solution for paint applicators and mild steel fabricators I
nnovative Coating Industries offers Rustogel, a gel rust remover and Zinkote-20, zinc flakes rich paints coatings for mild steel engineering fabrications/structures. Both the products are developed using latest technology and offer outstanding corrosion-resistance life for coated structures. The combination coating have passed 1,000 hours of fog chamber salt spray test and can resist every type of corrosion, including marine and salty atmospheres to chemical fumes and high-humidity conditions.
Surface preparations The preparation for rusted and nonrusted steel (C sections, I beams and pipes/angles used for all heavy engineering fabrication) is done by complete removal of oil and grease and a light wire brushing to remove the existing loose rust (oxides of iron). Rustogel 1406 Rustogel 1406 is used for complete removal of loose and adherent rust, mild scales, oxides of iron from the metal surface, fabrications, large MS equipment, trusses, chimneys, ms frameworks, angles, channels, pipelines,
steam lines, off-shore constructions, lighting poles, signal towers and antennas, ship building and ship repairs, and all pre-engineered buildings need removal of rust prior to painting or during annual re-painting and maintenance work. Apply Rustogel 1406 with brush or plastic spray. Allow 10-15 minutes for rust/iron oxides to be loosened from the surface. After this, either swab with a cloth soaked in water or wash the treated area with a jet of water. All loose, adherent rust will be removed. Repeat if heavy rust persists on the steel surface.
Zinkote 20 The rust converted steel shall be overcoated with Zinkote 20 (a zinc rich paint used for cold galvanising) Zinkote 20 is manufactured by using pure acrylic resin and 99 per cent pure zinc metal flakes. These zinc flakes have horizontal packing in the dry film. Zinc metal being extremely passive completely stops any further corrosion or attack of atmospheric oxygen, saline water, humidity in air or chemical vapours and fumes on the coated steel sections and fabrication. Single coat will offer 18-20 microns of zinc, and double coat, if necessary, may be done after 24 hours. Zinkote 20 is an instant air-drying paint;
hence, unused tins shall be always tightly closed to avoid losses due to evaporation. The coating shall confirm to most of the requirements of national and international standards. Zinc Bright in 500 ml self-spray aerosol format also offers silver bright finish cold galvanising on damaged/ scratched galvanised surfaces. Innovative Coating Industries offers outstanding weld cleaners and weld brighteners. These are also termed as pickling and passivation of SS 304 and 316L. These are most effective in weld cleaning and recommended for chemical process plants and equipment, SILOS, solar and power generation equipment, heat exchangers, all types of SS 304 and 316 l fabrications, chemical and pharma plants, hospital and kitchen ware, electric and electrical domestic appliances etc. It also offers weld cleaners and weld brighteners for 202 grade stainless steel and alloy steel castings. BRITOSS range products conform with the requirements of ASTMA 380 and IS 10117. These are most economically priced and quite at par with the best brands available in the market. n

Evolution of pipes and developments in plastic pipe sector The transformation of conventional piping products to advance plastic piping products and the role played by Supreme
Water is life; and life on earth is linked
to water. Human race’s existence is dependent on water, or the lack of it, in many ways. One could say that our whole civilisation is built on the use of water. Water systems of ancient times relied on gravity for the supply of water, using open channels. Man then felt the need of pipe to transport water to avoid water losses, theft and contamination. First attempts to transport water in closed pipes made of wood were made in China around 5000 BC. Prior to this, water was transported in open channels. Then in the 4000 BC, first true pipes were made of clay in Babylonia, the birthplace of pipes. This was the improvement over wood because of ease of production. Thus storm drains were constructed from clay bricks. In 3000 BC, Egyptians make sewer and water pipes from copper and extensively used for plumbing in Egyptian towns. Alloys of copper such as bronze and brass were used for making pipes. Lead begins to be extensively used in ancient civilisations because of its abundance, malleability and low melting temperature. Then lead is fabricated into pipes by plumbers. This proved to be a major mistake and later lead poisoning from water pipes contributed to the fall

of Rome. Improvement in plumbing systems was very slow, with virtually no progress made from the time of the Roman system of aqueducts and lead pipes. Stone had been used for centuries in Roman aqueducts, and small pipes had been bored from stone. But both had a tendency to crack and were difficult to join. Then in 1500, cast iron pipes are first used in France. The early pipelines remained in service for hundreds of years. Based on the merits over earlier development, these pipes are used on large scale from 1800s. Key benefit of cast iron was its higher pressure capacity. Then man went on using concrete (1824), steel (1880) and RCC (1905) pipes.
Plastic PVC was accidentally discovered in 1920s. After the World War II, there was an acute shortage of metal like iron, and consequently iron pipes were in short supply. Plastic pipes were commercially produced in Europe by mid 50s. In India first successful installation of PVC pipe for water supply was carried out in
1963 in Chatrapur, Uttar Pradesh. These pipes were donated and installed by Wavin N.V. from its Ireland plant. Hence, Supreme Industries Ltd. may consider 2013 as golden jubilee year for PVC pipes in India. In spite of reservations and doubts about the performance, plastics started getting acceptance across the country. This is largely because plastic offers multiple advantages. Key benefits of plastic pipes are lightweight, strength and chemical resistance. During early mid-70s, PVC pipes were used for the second application; namely, cold water plumbing. During early 70s, HDPE pipes made its way for water supply system. Thus initially uPVC pipes and fittings were introduced for water supply and cold water plumbing to replace CI and GI pipes. In the meantime, the real turning point in the building-related application took place in Europe. From early mid-70s, PVC soil and waste pipe system in Europe made a very big way. The architects, specifies, consultants and builders started using PVC soil and waste system in a big way in Europe and also this range was very welcome in the Middle-East building boom. India opened doors for PVC soil and waste system from early 80s, and Supreme was
EXPERT COLUMN the pioneer in introducing this product in the country. Supreme is proud to be a pioneer in introducing this concept and product which has changed the entire face of buildings as extensive saving in time and labour along with freedom from repeated leakages and breakages and maintenance is now possible. After successful introduction of different uPVC piping products for water supply, irrigation, drainage etc., Supreme introduced uPVC highpressure plumbing system as per ASTM standard which is welcomed on a large scale for water supply and water distribution in buildings. Use of PVC was restricted to cold water supply, and looking at the hot water distribution requirement CPVC and PPR piping systems are introduced in the market in 2002. Looking at the benefits as compared to GI, these products are also well accepted in the market. CPVC overtook PPR due to its simple conventional solvent cement jointing system. PB made a low-profile entry into high-end building sector but still had to

premium drainage system under the brand name Skyrise.
In the mean time, Supreme introduced underground drainage system with ready-made inspection chambers along with structured wall pipes. This product too has great potential as people are looking for better substitute for conventional masonry chambers and concrete or clay pipes.
Growth of plastic pipe systems in India in the last 5 years was phenomenal. The end users — including architects and consultants — have accepted the great value addition offered by plastic pipe systems such as corrosion-free property, lightweight, smooth bore, easy handling, easy jointing, long life of 50-100 years and cost savings; the list goes on. Supreme has played vital role in transformation of conventional piping products to advance plastic piping products in different application segment. n
Further extension of underground drainage system is the ready-made manhole. Recently, Supreme Industries introduced ready-made user-friendly manhole, which is going to be a real breakthrough in sewer technology. Another emerging application sector is soil system for high-rise buildings. In this sector, apart from strength and high-rise building requirement, the products having noise suppressing properties means lownoise system or salient pipe systems are emerging. Supreme has added this
