ith the growing investment and the rising opportunities, the rise of Infrastructure sector as one of the key drivers of the Indian economy is undisputed. Accelerated spending in this sector has had a large impact on the overall economic and industrial growth of the country.
which is an inseparable part of the infrastructure sector. The sales in this sector have reached up to a whopping 43 per cent. As per a report by the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association, the construction equipment sector is expected to see a growth at a CAGR of 20 per cent till 2020.
According to a report by Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a Paris based organisation, India’s growth rate is expected to hover near 7.5 per cent this year as well as next even as many emerging market economies continue to lose momentum. The report further added, that this ‘solid’ growth led by strong investment is expected to continue, helped by reforms to bolster infrastructure spending and robust demand growth.
Along with the growth in infrastructure, implementation of policies like GST and demonetisation will set the tone for business in the coming days. Here we take you through the opinion of industry experts on how the year will turn out to be for the business world.
The growth in the infrastructure sector has had an impact on the construction equipment sector,
The changed policies brought into action by the government, have started to have an impact on the industries across the sectors. We take a look at how the experts from various sectors look at this year.
CASE India to unveil new rental model We would like to introduce purchase or leased rental model which is very prevalent in the passenger car and commercial vehicles industry. Today most of the big customers are hesitant to block their CAPEX though they have capability to buy, healthy work orders, and large projects in hand. So we hope that we will be able to come out with a model with financers where the CAPEX will neither be on the customers nor on the manufacturer. Abhijit Gupta, Managing Director, CASE India

TIL expects 20-25% growth in cranes In 2017, we would expect 20-25 per cent growth in cranes. The upcoming metro projects and the ONGC contracts will give us the desired growth. The reach tracker market is driven by the containerisation of in-land movement of freight. We expect a 10-15 per cent growth for reach trackers. Anil Bhatia, VP – Sales & Marketing, Material Handling Solutions, TIL Ltd
Hope govt will come up with better policies At this point of time, considering the bold steps being taken up by the government including the demonetisation, the industry will be affected at large. I hope that the government will come up with better policies and reforms to come out of the current scenario. Especially for construction equipment and construction industry, things as of now are skeptical and we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Devendra Kumar Vyas, Chief Executive Officer, Financial Services, Srei Equipment Finance Pvt Ltd
Optimising on economies of scale To capitalise on the upcoming opportunities, we are strengthening our presence and expanding our reach. We are by building partnerships with manufacturers to leverage and enhance market share. We are optimising on economies of scale by lowering incremental cost of new products through synergies with existing construction and mining equipment operations.
Target double digit year-onyear Our group’s expectation is to maintain the leadership position and diversify the clientele. Keeping our projection on the infrastructure development, we would like to ensure that the clients are provided the best possible solution. Along with that, we target a double digit year-on-year growth and double our turnover in the next 3-4 years.
Raman Joshi, Vice President, Kobelco Cranes India Pvt Ltd
Will see phenomenal growth from 2018 Going ahead in 2017, everything was set on the dot and we were expecting similar growth. The first quarter may be little slow. Till the time whole economic cycle settles post the demonetisation, we would not see growth picking up. It may take another 3-6 months. However, from 2018 onwards everything will be back to normal and we will see phenomenal growth. Pradeep Sharma, President, Action Construction Equipment Ltd

Caterpillar to develop ‘smart’ machines Our AccuGrade solution helps in achieving almost 30 per cent fuel efficiency and 40 per cent increase in productivity. Andy Dhanaraj, Director - Sales, Global Construction & Infrastructure, Caterpillar India
C
aterpillar, the global giant in construction and mining equipment manufacturing, would like to continue growing it’s machine portfolio and also make the machines ‘smart’ for its customers, informed Andy Dhanaraj, Director - Sales, Global Construction & Infrastructure, Caterpillar India.
What are your projections for the year 2017? Sitting in EXCON 2015 in December 2015 we were talking about whether the industry could grow or not. After reaching the end of 2016, we realised that most of the businesses are getting traction. We saw execution work on stalled projects started picking up. We feel that the year 2017 will probably be a full growth year for the industry. The government will be in full throttle in 2017 to make a significant visible impact in the economy by pushing infrastructure, road building and other sectors. Caterpillar India is very excited about all these opportunities! What will be your focus for the next one year or so? We are present in almost every segment of construction including building construction, roads and bridges and other basic infrastructures. A wide range of our machines are used in the mining segment. We plan to leverage all these opportunities with a focus on technology. We will continue to grow on our machine portfolio and also make the machines ‘smart’ for our customers. That is going to be the key.

Could you explain some of the smart features? Our earthmoving machines for example feature AccuGrade Grade Control System that improves grading accuracy and reduces the need for survey stakes dramatically. The AccuGrade solution is factory integrated, sensor-independent, and features a suite of products which includes cross slope, sonic, laser, GPS, and ATS technology. It helps in achieving almost 30 per cent fuel efficiency and 40 per cent increase in productivity. It saves a lot of material too. Also, one does not need to look for skilled operators as a two-day training is sufficient for the user to operate the device confidently. Also, our Cat Connect technology enables operators and managers to access machine operating data including total fuel consumption, average fuel rate, total idle time and fuel consumed at idle, total operating hours and several other machine data. These new technologies and services provide an increasing ability for customers to monitor, manage and enhance operations, gain more control of their jobsites, reduce costs and increase profits.
What are the smart features of the new Cat B20 Hammer? The good thing about a machine being equipped with Cat technology is that it is merged together with greater perfection. It is just the click of a button that changes the entire circuit of the hydraulics to adapt it to the functioning of the hammer. Though the crusher is coming to the bucket, it is different. Also, it monitors how much time the hammer and its components are being used in the machine. What makes your 950L wheel loaders stand out from the competition? The 950L wheel loaders are powered with the Cat C7.1 ACERT engine which is designed to improve operator comfort, performance and productivity. It also features lower fuel consumption and our proven technology Cat Connect. The 950L delivers considerable additional customer value including a new operator environment layout, new transmission with lock-up clutch torque converter (fuel efficiency and speed on grade) and new optional traction aids. Volvo CE targets 15-20% growth in 2017 Though the road construction equipment market will remain very strong, we expect the mining industry more particularly the coal and iron ore mining to pick up. Dimitrov Krishnan, Vice President and Head, Volvo CE India

aintaining the strong focus on road building sector, Volvo CE India has unveiled advanced compactors and paver at the recently concluded Bauma Conexpo India 2016. On the sidelines of the event, the company’s Vice President and Head Dimitrov Krishnan speaks to B2B Purchase. Interview excerpts:
How was the year gone by? We have done exceedingly well and we are quite satisfied with our business development in 2016. Being a premium brand the kind of product offering that we have very much based on the concept of total cost per tonne. We have been able to hold our own in the market which is booming and generally when a market is booming the way it is the value based the value end is what actually grows the maximum. Despite that we are able to gain tremendous positions in many of our products, particularly in bigger excavator ranges between 30-tonne and 75-tonne our presence is becoming stronger and stronger every year. Primarily it is not only our products that are making it successful but also our aftermarket capabilities and dealer capability is becoming very strong. So 2016 is a year where we have gained market share in many areas. We have achieved around 35-40 per cent growth year-onyear in the past one year. In addition, keeping our focus on new product development, we have introduced the P5320B

ABG paver in early 2016. We have also launched the new DD90B double drum compactor and SD110BA single drum compactor in Bauma Conexpo India 2016.
You have introduced D-Series excavators EC210D and EC250D. What will be your strategy to put these products in the market? Volvo’s D-Series excavators 21-tonne rated EC210D and 25-tonne rated EC250D represent the latest in construction technology and are designed to perform well in a range of applications including road building, irrigation projects or work in materials handling duties. These excavators can deliver up to 10 per cent better fuel efficiency than their predecessors. Our products are sold with very strong relationship with our customers. We have to be closer to our customers and create awareness about the product performance and features. We have invested heavily in improving our dealer capabilities in terms of technical capacities and support them come out of their financial crisis faced due to economic downturn. We need to further improve our penetration in the untapped markets.
What is your projection for 2017? I think it will be a good market. Though the road construction equipment market will remain very strong, we expect the mining industry more particularly the coal and iron ore mining to pick up. The industry should see around 15 to 20 per cent growth depending up on how the government accelerates policies like GST. We target to maintain the similar kind of growth. The only challenge in the next year is the base set in 2016 which is very high and one cannot expect 40 per cent growth rate. n

ccording to Jasmeet Singh, Head – Corporate Communications and External Relations, JCB India Ltd, the industry grew nearly 45 per cent in the period between January to November of 2016 as compared to the same time in 2015. He adds, “We expect to see a growth of around 1012 per cent in the coming years.”
Vipin Sondhi, MD and CEO, JCB India at the launch of JCB’s biggest excavator in India at Bauma Conexpo India 2016
What does the next year look like for the Indian construction equipment industry? After a down cycle that lasted for close for four years, we are seeing an upward growth in construction equipment industry which needs to be sustained. 2016 was a positive year for the industry with several stalled projects been re-
New launches at Bauma Conexpo India 2016 • Excavators in the 22T, 30T, and 37T categories • 3T Mini Excavator • New 11T Soil Compactor – the VM116 • 5.5T Wheeled Loader - the 455ZX • All New and versatile 2DX Backhoe Loader initiated. The industry grew nearly 45 per cent in the period between January to November of 2016 as compared to the same time in 2015. The roads and highways sector has been a major contributor to this growth. As the economy would further stabilise, we expect to see a growth of around 10-12 per cent in the coming years.
JCB is transforming itself into a full range infrastructure equipment player. Which segment will drive your growth in 2017? Roads and highways, irrigation, railways, real estate and other physical infrastructure projects segments are major growth drivers for our industry. Currently, the roads and highways sector is leading the industry revival followed by irrigation. However, for achieving a sustainable growth, at least three to four of the above sectors should perform. How is the acceptance of your material handling products which you launched recently? In today’s scenario, material handling segment is a sunrise industry. We unveiled three ‘Made in India’ machines in 2016, namely the Telehandlers, the Skid Steer Loaders and the Super Loaders. The products are well-accepted in the Indian market and we are sure that our range of revolutionary solutions will transform the material handling practices in India. In the Telehandlers category, which is known as JCB Loadall, we offer three variants - the Made in India 530-70 and 530-110, and we import the 540-170 from the UK. These Loadalls come with a variety of attachments which makes the machine more versatile. Our Skid Steers are the world’s safest Skid Steers as they come with a unique side door entry and are ideal to operate in urban infrastructure applications or for narrow and areas where space is a constraint. Our Super Loaders are designed as a dedicated loader for loading applications at higher heights. n

Liebherr unveils slew of ‘intelligent’ products made for India Though the market dynamics is not as high as it was expected, the situation remains hopeful with a stable, progressive government in centre. Dr. Gerold Dobler, Head - Corp Comm., LiebherrInternational Deutschland GmbH
I
n its bid to meet the ever-increasing demands of the construction industry in India, construction equipment manufacturing major Liebherr unveiled a slew of advanced products like NC-B top-slewing crane and LTM 1250-5.1 five-axle Mobile Crane. At the Bauma Conexpo India 2016 in Gurgaon near New Delhi, the company announced the world premiere of a new series of top-slewing cranes with a flat-top design: the NC-B cranes. With 6 tonnes of maximum lifting capacity, 62.50 metres maximum radius, 501 metres maximum hook height; the new cranes are specifically developed to meet the requirements for use in conurbations in emerging economies like India. Liebherr flat-top crane NC-B at Bauma Conexpo India 2016
Producing German quality in India Liebherr manufactures cranes tailored to suit the local market in India at its LiebherrCMCtec India Pvt Ltd site opened in 2012 in Pune, ensuring short lead times whilst still using time-tested, high-quality German technology. “NC-B 6-62 tower crane is engineered in Germany and being manufactured in India at the company’s Pune plant to meet the very specific needs of India and neighbouring countries,” said Dr. Gerold Dobler, Head - Corporate Communications at Liebherr-International Deutschland GmbH.

Revival in corner The tower crane market in India maybe hit due to prolonged slump in real estate industry, Liebherr is quite optimistic about quick revival. “Though the market dynamics is not as high as it was expected, the situation remains hopeful with a stable, progressive government in centre,” he said. Intelligent features of NC-B cranes The first two models in the new series can cover a wide range of construction projects in these areas. “The 9-tonne version is ideal for hoisting heavy prefabricated components – for example for building shopping centres, production plants and car parks. The 6-tonne NC-B 6-62 crane, meanwhile, is perfect for erecting tower blocks in inner city areas where they work with low load weights but enormous hook heights,” informs Dr. Dobler. In contrast to existing Liebherr flattop cranes, the new NC-B models have a full jib element rather than the compact head. Talking on the intelligent features of NC-B cranes, he said, “In contrast to existing Liebherr flat-top cranes, the new NC-B models have a full jib element rather than the compact head. The new concept includes LiConnect jib connection system that enables the jib to be shortened or extended quickly and easily in steps of five metres.”
Most powerful mobile crane on 5 axles! Liebherr also introduced its 250-tonne mobile crane LTM 1250-5.1 which is being touted as the most powerful mobile crane on 5 axles available in the market. Intelligent feature ECOmode allows the machine to be run with particularly low fuel consumption whereas VarioBase makes its operations safer. A mechanical shaft ensures particularly high efficiency levels and low engine speeds in the chassis engine, providing sufficient power for crane work. “The benefits of not having a separate superstructure engine include reduced maintenance work and lower weight. The lower weight can be used for load-bearing components, thus increasing the crane’s load capacity,” said Dr. Dobler.

eeing the increasing opportunities in the Indian road building sector, France-based Fayat Group has set up a manufacturing facility in Sanand, January last year with an investment of 16 million Euros. The new manufacturing base strengthens the position of the company in India, informs Joachim Blatt, Business Unit Managing Director, Marini S.p.A.
Marini is one of the global majors in the production of asphalt plants. Could you tell us about your business activities in India? In India, we have been offering Marini mixing plants for years. Today, India is a growing market and understanding its potential, we have strengthened our presence in this market by setting up a worldclass production unit in Gujarat. Considering how aggressive the Indian market is, setting up a shop in India for localised production was imperative, which is bound to increase our competitiveness in the industry. What is the percentage of localisation? Our plants are known for its reliability; however, the Indian supply base hasn’t been tested yet, so we haven’t localised as much as we would have liked to. Therefore, most of the key components are still of European origin and few are sourced locally from international manufacturers stationed in India. So, we stand at around 60 per cent localisation now. There are few players who are dominating the market segment in India. What will make people come to you?

The reputation of our brand will bring the clients to us. Marini is known for reliability, performance, and productivity, with a high level of equipment quality. Customers seeking these features are with us and we are hopeful of attracting more. As I said earlier, having set up production facility here to be closer to the Indian contractors will result in the costs coming down by around 2530 per cent, thereby, taking import duty out of the equation, hitherto a big turn –off for end users. We, therefore, look forward to increasing our reach and brand which will only grow in the Indian segment.
Fayat offers a complete range of products for road lifecycle. Are all the products available in Indian market? Not yet. Presently we are supplying Fayat range of mixing plants. Products for road maintenances are already popular from Fayat in India. There are other products like compactors, stabilisers, recyclers and pavers which will be brought to the Indian market once we have adequate after-sales support to cater to the entire spectrum. Which country is most promising to you? India is one of the promising markets for us due to its huge potential in the infrastructural segment. Increasing population and rapid socio-economic development will spur the demand for better road connectivity in India. Could you name companies who’ve placed orders with you for your localised mixing plant? In India, we have been able to serve our existing clientele through the supply of high quality plants from our factory in Sanand. Advance technology plants to GR Infra for their several projects, HG Infra, EKK etc., are some of the other customers whose supplies are in the pipeline. Are you looking at increasing your presence in India? We have our sales team who are doing a fantastic job. However, we are looking for potential partners to penetrate the market further. n

Mtandt creating new horizons In the next two year, we will be investing around ` 700 crore for expanding our Group’s business out of which more than ` 600 crore will be invested in rental. Rakesh Modi, Managing Director, Mtandt Group
Mtandt targets 60% growth in turnover over financial year 2015-16. Could you discuss your strategies to achieve it? Strategy of any business is to make the customers earn money. Once you make it sure, you earn money. We have made significant investment in the new technologies and new machines. On the management side, we have had changes in the management in the last 24 months and have delegated authorities to the grass root levels. We have tried to make the organisation more efficient and put in more human resources in place. We have increased our market presence by strengthening our sales and distribution network – today we have around 80 dealers. Apart from increasing your presence in the local market, are you going abroad too? Yes, we recently signed up for Mtandt Sri Lanka which will be operational from January 2017. We are already servicing Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh and will be in Afghanistan commencing 2018. Can you tell us more about the functioning of Mtandt Sri Lanka? We have floated a joint venture with a Sri Lankan company named Pro Lanka where we will be having 51 per cent stake. We will be setting up a 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility for scaffolding in Colombo and start our rental business too. The trading and renting will start in January whereas the manufacturing operation will begin in July. To start with, we will be producing around 100 tonne aluminium scaffolding per annum.

2018 will be a record-breaking year: NORD for this purpose. They are sturdy in terms of design and can take more load. The casings also have less mechanical components that reduce the chances of failures of the device.

ord is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of drive technology – for mechanical and electronic solutions. PL Muthusekkar, Managing Director, Nord Drivesystems speaks to Subhajit Roy and talks about the advancement in drive technology and Nord’s commitment. Excerpt:
How is the acceptance of high efficient drive systems in India? Today the world has become a global village – technology is available across the globe. The transformation is taking place everywhere. For us, one can buy our product in any part of the world from 46 companies of Nord in 36 countries. The customers get the same quality and the same product worldwide. We also have ‘one product global warranty’ concept. However we expected the Indian government to emphasis on energy efficiency norms like IE2 onwards mandatory for motors. What are your offerings in the construction equipment industry? Nord offers German designed, safe and rugged products. On top of that our products have longer lifespan with high degree of performance efficiency and trouble-free operations. Generally, construction equipment operate in difficult terrain at remote locations. In such conditions frequent maintenance is not possible due to minimum accessibility. Gear motors and gearboxes have to specially build to ensure optimum performance of construction equipment with reduced downtime. NORD heavyduty, one-piece housings are precisely machined

What assurance do you provide to the OEMs and end user in terms product performance? In terms of the product, we always talk on efficiency and total cost of ownership of enhanced product lifecycle. The prices might be slightly higher than the products completely indigenously produced in India as our 100 per cent components are imported from Germany. The bigger advantages are the longevity and sturdiness. Our parts like the oil seals are not just oil stopper, but are designed in such a way so that they can push the oil back in the gearboxes. This may be a very small component of a product, but can play significant role in terms of enhance efficiency and life of product. It will also cancel the clogging and nullify the overheating which enable consistent output for a longer period. Also, with the fitment of our geared motor in an overhead crane, the structural weight can be substantially reduced and span width of operation is increased.
What are your projections for the 2017? In the current scenario, the two major issues are demonetisation and the GST Bill. It is expected that the spill over of the demonetisation topic will last for at least first two months of 2017. GST will also have an impact for over three months. Putting this aside, we are positive about growth for the industry. In the wake of the demonetisation issue, we will have to wait for 2018 to be the record-breaking year for the industry with a double-digit growth. Do you have any major announcements for the new year? In early 2017, we will be launching a last mile service vehicle – a fully-equipped service van that is of the stature of a factory fitted conditions. It will be equipped with a hydraulic power press, working bench and testing equipment where gearboxes, motors and drives can be tested, assembled and serviced. Initially we will be launching it in Pune to cover an area of approximately 600 kms. After seeing its success, we will replicate the same in other parts of the country. Almost 12 Indian airports have baggage handling systems driven by Nord drive systems. Our last mile service vehicles will be able to cater to service these airports. n

rasad Ganta, Technical Operations Officer, Reactore interacts with B2B Purchase about his views on how 2017 will turn out to be for the Indian construction industry, his projections about the business and explains the strategies that will be undertaken to achieve those targets.
Mining industry to leverage technology benefits “Mining, being one of the largest contributors towards the industrial sector of the Indian economy, is recovering well from the challenges faced recently in the commodity sector. Now that FDI inflows have been permitted up to 100 per cent under automatic route in the mining industry, its growth is expected to shoot up rapidly,” says Prasad. He further adds, “Where companies were busy acquiring mines in 2016, the real action of setting up systems and starting mine operations would be witnessed 2017 onwards. Along with the mines, the construction industries also have shown their interest in adopting the latest technology to automate operations and reduce manual efforts. In short, the Indian mining and construction industry is looking forward to leverage the benefits of latest technology and the 4th industrial revolution to maximise on productivity and efficiency.”
Getting a hold on the market When asked about the projections Prasad has for his business, he says, “We are motivated and striving to bring a digital transformation in the mining and construction industry in India. We’ve been working closely with mining companies in India and abroad having spent 3 years performing feasibility studies and active research and development in building our product until it was market ready. We started marketing our product in India in April 2016. From the time we introduced our product in the main stream market of mining and construction, we’ve been getting immense positive responses from different companies of all sizes.” Throwing light on the specific targets set for Reactore, he says, “As we see a huge opportunity of our solution implementation in India, our focus in 2017 lies strongly in capturing the Indian market. Listen, understand and analyse “In terms of business development we have already attended various conferences and trade shows. The response has been phenomenal thus far and we will continue to pursue this course of action,” says Prasad about the strategies that will be used to realise the set targets. Prasad further adds, “In terms of delivering the solution, the first step is to listen, understand and analyse the problems that the clients face with their operations and existing systems. We also acknowledge that every mine is different in terms of its operations and resources, and fine tune our implementation accordingly. Since our product provides real-time data of overall activities carried out within the mines, it makes it simple for the decision makers and the managers to have an overview of all the operations from a single system. Our unique 3D visualisation of operations transforms the way that users engage with software.”
Services by Reactore When asked about the services provided to Foyer Construction Ltd, the company’s first client in India, Prasad says, “Foyer is a mining aggregate company that supplies the construction industry. L&T and Komatsu exhibit complete synergy in M&CE space Komatsu provides excavating equipment whereas L&T provides hauling units. So, there is an absolute alignment of thoughts between both the companies without any competitiveness. Hemant Mathur, General Manager & HeadCEB, Larsen & Toubro Ltd
W
e would like to maintain the market share in the range of 18-20 per cent and a growth of 15-20 per cent CAGR, said Hemant Mathur, General Manager & Head-CEB, Larsen & Toubro Limited while speaking about the growth of L&T. Excerpts from his interview with Subhajit Roy:
What will be the focus of L&T’s Construction Equipment Business in 2017 especially in the area of product innovation? In the Construction Equipment Business, we have two portfolios to deal with. In one hand, we are the exclusive distributor of Komatsu’s world-class construction and mining equipment in India. On the other hand, L&T designs and manufactures its own range of equipment for road construction. During the past one year, we have introduced wheel loader and two models of vibratory compactors. The third model of vibratory compactor will be commercially launched by March 2017. Seeing the upsurge in road building industry, we would like to launch 2 -3 indigenously developed new products. Could you give us more information on the upcoming products? Our future products will be for skid steer loader and paver finisher segments. The products are conceptualised and designed with latest technology having very unique specifications that are ideally suited for the Indian conditions. The products will be integrated with the best technical competence that we have. Today OEMs are focusing more on increasing fuel efficiency, productivity and safety. What’s your take on that? Absolutely! We work with Komatsu which is the second largest construction equipment manufacturer in the world. It is also the world’s largest manufacturer of excavators. Their products have inherent features in terms of engine efficiency, longevity, productivity and safety. Also with the advent of telematics, electronic involvement in Komatsu machines is probably the highest in the industry. Komatsu machines are integrated with high technology, sensor based telematics systems to enable remote access of their performance in real time. At Bauma Conexpo India 2016, we have launched Komatsu’s PC 350 excavator having such intelligent machine control. We have also introduced Komatsu’s

GD 535 advanced motor grader during this event. Komatsu products come with standardisation of components for across the products that gives a common platform for bring a lot of commonality which results in ease of support. One engine, one power system that is calibrated differently through controllers generates different horsepower at a different speed and torque as per the requirement. We are going to incorporate the same kind of culture even in L&T machines.
Are you doing any kind of customisation with Komatsu range of products for the Indian market? The way Indians use the machines is different than other countries. Particularly, we are in the habit of using smaller machines for bigger jobs. In case of smaller machines, they are strengthened by toughening the structures. So, in India, we have stronger machines than the internationally designed standard ones. Machine of this type is not made anywhere in the world. On top of that, we have made them rugged for hard applications by strengthening their attachments. Kinematics of the attachments is completely modified to suit applications. For example, our PC 350 excavator having the carriage capacity of 30-tonne can carry up to 45 tonnes. How do Komatsu and L&T complement each other? Apart from manufacturing and selling our own L&T-make products, we are the exclusive distributor of Komatsu. In India, Komatsu primarily manufactures hydraulic excavators and mining dumpers and rest of the machines are imported from Japan. Komatsu caters to the construction and mining segment mainly excavation and material handling applications whereas L&T manufactures wheel loaders and vibratory compactors. Komatsu provides excavating units whereas L&T provides hauling units. So, there is an absolute alignment of thoughts between both the companies without any competitiveness. We do not manufacture anything that does not have the approval of Komatsu and we confine ourselves mainly to the Indian market. We also represent Scania for their trucks. Therefore there is the complete synergy within the three companies to offer end-toend solutions for construction and mining segments. What is your outlook for the Indian construction equipment industry? The construction equipment market in India is booming as of now! We anticipate a growth of 30-35 per cent in next one year. We have already seen a growth of about 40 per cent this year and in the last 6 months there has been a growth of 25 per cent. In the long term, the growth of the construction equipment industry can be somewhere in the range of 18-19 per cent over the next 5 years. Speaking about the growth of L&T, we are in pace with the market. We would like to maintain the market share in the range of 18-20 per cent and a growth of 15-20 per cent CAGR.

P
roman Infrastructure Services recently launched its plaster sand mortar plant in technological collaboration with Sotecma Group of Spain. On the sidelines of Bauma Conexo India 2016, the company’s Managing Director RS Raghavan briefs about the market trends and new product development.
How was the Bauma Conexo India 2016? It was much better than the previous editions and the location seems to be right. However we feel the organisers need to put more efforts to bring in relevant crowd. We did get some quality customers from northern region and received a few order booking. We have also got some quality leads which will help us to grow business in the future. Did you launch any new product? Yes, we have launched our new series of vertical shaft impactor VSI 1530 and high frequency screening equipment ProSizer for fine screening. We expect that the new machines would allow producing high quality aggregate and manufactured sand in the North Indian market. What are your expectations from 2017? The first three quarters of financial year 2016 has been good for Proman. The last quarter will be slower as the infrastructure segment will look forward for clarity on the government’s budgets post demonetisation. In 2017, the growth of the industry will depend on how much the government spends on developing the infrastructure. Hopefully, with demonetisation

whatever money comes to the government, a major chunk would be brought back in the form of investment towards infrastructure development.
What is your projection for Proman? Proman would like to grow by around 30 per cent. I don’t know whether it will be possible to achieve this target keeping our focus only in India. We may have to look at other markets also to increase our export share from the current level of 25 – 30 per cent. Are you looking at any kind of partnership? We have recently launched our plaster sand mortar plant in technological collaboration with Sotecma Group of Spain. This will allow us to cater to more market segments. We will be manufacturing this equipment and plant in India with almost 80 per cent of localisation. Please discuss more about this new product. This is a niche concept of producing plaster sand and mortar in bags to be readily used. This is an addon to the sand plant and will allow our customers to expand their business and add value to their customers. n Wendt Corp. partners with Proman Infrastructure New York based Wendt Corporation announced a partnership agreement with Proman Infrastructure Services Pvt Ltd that will make Wendt’s shredding and separation technologies available in India. Everest Engineering set to get bigger We have a plan to start major parts manufacturing in India with proper technical knowhow, proper jigs and machineries. It may take couple of years, but we will come up. PV Ramdev, Managing Director, Everest Engineering Equipment Pvt Ltd
E
verest Engineering Equipment Pvt Ltd (popularly known as EEE), a CRISIL rated, ISO certified tower crane service company, is inching toward a 25 per cent growth in sales revenue in 2017 over the previous year. In the long-run the company aims to be recognised as a manufacturer of cranes, hoists and allied components. In an interview with B2B Purchase, EEE’s Managing Director PV Ramdev speaks on his projections.
Everest tower cranes at work
Mr Ramdev, would you like to make any major announcement? We have started manufacturing our own passenger hoists under Everest Engineering brand in China. These passenger hoists are designed and developed as per Indian conditions and building requirements. After successfully using the products for more than two years in our rental division, we are introducing them for Indian market. We have received many enquiries from Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata during the recently concluded Bauma Conexpo India 2016. Will you be manufacturing the same passenger hoist in India? We have a plan to start major parts manufacturing in India with proper technical knowhow, proper jigs and machineries. It may take couple of years, but we will come up. How do you look at the opportunities in rental space? The rental business for construction machineries will grow definitely and it’s a good business. corporate companies have their own huge fleet and are not keen to increase their machinery fleet assets because rental machines are easily available in the market. Also they can get the passenger hoists and tower cranes on rental according to their project requirement. At Everest, we would like to strengthen our rental arm by putting more machines.
Why a rental company should go for EEE products? Our tower cranes and passenger hoists offer maximum safety, reliability and much better lifecycle which are very critical for rental companies. Indian tower crane market is dominated by a few MNCs. How do you look at the competitive scenario? We are focused on the execution and maintenance of industrial units such as power plants, steel plants, cement plants and construction of dams. Precast building is also an emerging area and we recently got the biggest order in the history of tower cranes in India. We are going to supply 32 units of 12-tonne capacity tower cranes to Pune based precast company BG Shirke Construction Technology Pvt Ltd. Earlier we supplied 86 units of tower cranes to the same company for their DDA projects. So it is proven that even we can also add some value to the industry. How the market is going to respond in 2017 post demonetisation? We expect improved market scenario in 2017 because of the demonetisation, We feel that the people will get more power to buy and the bank interest rate for housing loans may come down to 8 per cent from the current 10 per cent. Real estate market may witness a surge post all this revival measures which will boost tower cranes industry. What is your projection for 2017? In 2017 we expect an increase of 20-25 per cent in the tower cranes and passenger hoists sales. At EEE, we anticipate the same range of growth for us. What are your long-term strategies? Gradually we would like to project ourselves as a manufacturing company in India. We plan to start manufacturing of passenger hoist components, anti-collision systems and safe loading indicators in India. The products will be designed and developed to suit the Indian requirements with proven technology collaboration. n

Diversification makes sense for Ajax Fiori an extensive usage after 3-4 years. These make us stand out from the crowd.
Now we feel that we need to diversify to add value to our esteemed customers in the concrete equipment value chain. Jagadish Bhat, CEO, Ajax Fiori
A
jax Fiori is a leading concrete machinery manufacturer with a range of solutions including self-loading concrete mixers, batching plants and pumps. Now the company would like to give a new dimension to its business by diversifying the product range, informs Jagadish Bhat, CEO of Ajax Fiori.
Congratulations on launching the JSP 50 concrete pump. Could you brief us on the unique features of this new launch? We entered the concrete pump industry in 2013, with two models, the JSP 40 and the JSP 70 with a pumping capacity of 40 cu.m/hr and 70 cu.m/hr respectively. Concrete pump with 40 cubic metre capacity is not suitable when continuous pouring of concrete is needed as the activity happens in batches depending upon the transit mixers availability. Also, a capacity higher than 70 cu.m/hr will be too high to meet the current demand. Therefore we felt that the gap between these two ranges is quite higher and the market needed an intermediate product in terms of capacity. JSP 50 is an ideal size to meet the fairly large volume of concrete in a stock-stop basis. So the new concrete pump will bridge the gaps between our existing product ranges. What makes the customers reach out to you even when there are other competitors in the market? We have been known for the support to our customers. Our nation-wide reach and spare parts availability is second to none. On top of that, our products get a very high resale value even after

How was the performance of your company during the past one year? We performed pretty well last year. Even the current financial year was good as we will be growing at a rate of almost 35-40 per cent than the last year. We are also planning to launch some new products in the coming year. We have always been perceived as a single product manufacturing company with self loading mixers for years. However, now we feel that we need to diversify to add value to our esteemed customers in the concrete equipment value chain. The diversification will allow us to grow faster in terms on product portfolio and market penetration. Is road sector going to drive your growth? In case of developing bigger roads like national highways or express ways, the requirement of concrete is huge and we need to set up larger size of batching plants to cater the need of the project. While developing comparatively smaller roads like intra-state roads and rural roads, the requirement of concrete is lower. Self loading concrete mixers and concrete pumps are in high demand in these projects. However, a bulk of our machines is used in irrigation projects and making rural roads and bridges. Ajax Fiori has presence all-over India. Still which region has been your prominent for your business? The markets in southern part of India are strong contributors to our business. Of late, because of increasing infrastructure development related activities, Telangana has become a hub. We have provided many machines for the irrigation projects in this new state. However, we will continue to grow all over the country with the introduction of new product verticals. n Launch of JSP 50 concrete pump

Sandvik: Developing Competence You can have a great Ferrari, but you need to have a competent driver to make its performance sustainable. Subhasis Das, Vice President, Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology India
Of late, Sandvik India has renewed its focus by combining both construction and mining businesses. Could you shed some light on this? Yes, mining and construction businesses have been merged into a new business area, Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology. There are a lot of synergies at the back end and also in the front lines. We were together till 2012. However the mining industry was then cruising through the ‘super cycle’ and needed more focus. Now, when the market has stabilised, rather we are witnessing de-growth, we wanted to utilise our entire resources optimally to enhance efficiency. Therefore, we decided to combine our two businesses and today we are witnessing improved performance in terms of sales and productivity. Can we ever really expect to see the ‘super growth’ of the past again? We might not see the ‘super growth’ globally soon that we have witnessed in 2008-09. However Indian economy is expected to grow exponentially with GDP to hit US$ 3 trillion by 2020. I feel that the economy will grow at much faster rate i.e. around 7-8 per cent CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate). From a construction and mining equipment manufacturer perspective, we foresee increased spending in terms of CAPEX. Keeping this positive economic growth in mind, what will be your strategy?

We are launching advanced technologies to meet the Indian requirements. Our globally proven bolter miners that are used in underground coal mining will be introduced in the Indian market soon. These machines are also designed for rapid entry roadway development operations. We have already received an order from Coal India and the machine will be commissioned in early 2017. More importantly, we are working more on the building competency and we have set up a training academy at Nagpur in this regard. One may have a sophisticated machine. But if he/she doesn’t know how to maintain and operate it to its highest level of productivity continuously, won’t be able to generate sustainable revenue. In the mining industry this is key challenge. You can have a great Ferrari, but you need to have a competent driver to run it and make its performance sustainable.
Do you foresee any momentum in the construction segment? There is an overall 6-7 per cent growth expected in infrastructure, construction and real estate business for the next 5-10 years. I see a boost in the dimensional stones like granite and marble. Chinese market for polished stone has recently picked up so we see some upward movement. There are positive movements in the aggregate market too. As sand mining is becoming illegal in many parts of the world, the requirement for artificial sand is catching up. We have technology to break sandstone faster to make sand which is used as building material. We also have different drills which are used by the aggregate industry. Demand for advanced crushing and screening machines is also picking up. At present, road and tunnel connection is driving the growth of construction industry. However, once the construction activities for smart cities take the desired pace, we will see more activities. As the government plans huge development initiatives, what kind of growth you expect in next five years for Sandvik in India? We are growing at a CAGR of 20 per cent for the past 2-3 years and would like to maintain the same at least for next 2 years. n

Off-highway tyres market will be on a roll in 2017 A
s the government is putting lots of efforts in pushing the stalled projects and announcing major new projects, we can only expect exponential growth for the industry as well as BKT, observed Ashok Chhajer, Sr. DGM - OE Sales, BKT.
Balkrishna Industries Ltd (BKT) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of off-highway tyres. How was the year 2016 for BKT? The year 2016 was a good from every front for BKT. From a very opening in the first quarter of calendar year 2016, the market went down little in the second quarter. Again after a quick recovery in the third quarter with a moderate performance, the sales in last quarter really picked up. So the bottom line in 2016 was good for us. Although the industry figures are not at par with 2009, BKT has seen remarkable growth after a gap of many years. We are expecting a year-on-year growth of 15-16 per cent. Which are the segments driving your sales growth? In India, BKT is growing in every segment of its business including agriculture, industrial, construction, port, mining and material handling. Globally, the major target industries like mining, farm equipment of large horsepower and construction industries are yet to pick up. So, does the renewed focus on domestic market have somehow helped you to maintain the growth? Though we have increased our focus in the domestic market, exports remain the key contributor to our revenue with around 83 to 84 per cent sales. We would like to continue with the same strategy.
Although the industry figures are not at par with 2009, BKT has seen remarkable growth after a gap of many years. We are expecting a year-on-year growth of 15-16 per cent. Ashok Chhajer, Sr. DGM - OE Sales, BKT (Balkrishna Tyres)
What is your projection for 2017? Based on the domestic market base we have seen during the last quarter of calendar year 2016, if this continues definitely there will be an excellent growth. As the government is putting lots of efforts in pushing the stalled projects and announcing major new projects, we can only expect exponential growth for the industry as well as BKT. In India, construction industry remains the prime mover for off-highway tyres (OTR) industry with 50-55 per cent contribution. Now, if this construction industry alone gets double digit growth, the OTR would surely achieve excellent growth. What kind of growth you target for BKT? We are looking at a growth of around 15 per cent in terms of units. To conclude, how Bhuj facility has helped BKT in the past couple of years? Built with an investment of 500-million-USdollar, it is a state-of-the-art, world-class all steel radial tyre making facility. It has increased BKT’s manufacturing prowess and competence dramatically. Today, about 175 tonnes are rolling off the production lines in Bhuj every day. The plant has a capacity of 350 tonnes per day. It has the production capability for the sizes ranging from 17.5-inch to 49-inch and in early 2017 it would go up to 51-inch for specialised mining application. n

Green mining solutions by MMD Throwing light on the green mining solutions of MMD, Chaudhuri says, “Green has never been a new word or a passing fad for MMD. We have been recognised as as global leaders in ‘In-Pit Sizing & Conveying technology’ (IPSC), the company have been providing greener and more cost-effective solutions for operators worldwide for over 38 years.” He further adds, “MMD have been producing Semi-mobile IPSC units since the early 1980’s. They are generally fed by a small fleet of trucks transporting material short distances from the mine face. The Sizer unit reduces material in preparation for efficient conveyor haulage out of the mine. As the mining face progresses these units are relocated occasionally to minimise the truck haulage distance.MMD has, throughout its existence, developed purpose designed mobile units to suit any mining method and material. The whole range of Sizers can be incorporated into a wide range of transport options available to suit the duties and throughput required.”
Optimistic about the year round performance Chaudhuri is optimistic about how the year will turn out to be for the mining industry. He says, “As there are lot of opportunities in Indian mining industries, I hope that year 2017 should be busiest year compare to last couple of years for mining equipment manufacturers.” Sharing the projections Chaudhuri has for MMD India, he says, “We have business projections for different verticals such as spares for existing machines, capital equipment, turnkey solutions and rental services.”
24x7 after sales When asked about the major strategies that the company will undertake in order to achieve the set targets, Chaudhuri says, “We have different strategies to realise these targets. We built world class manufacturing facility on 15 acres land in Sri City, Tada, Andhra Pradesh to supply mining equipment based on the concept ‘For India From India’. We intend to provide 24 x 7 after-sales support to our clients in India.” n

shok Tanna, Managing Director, Linnhoff India Pvt Ltd, speaks about his experience at the Bauma Conexpo 2016 and shares the company’s strategy for 2017 in the wake of the recent demonetisation.
Bauma a successful event for Linnhoff Sharing about how the experience at Bauma Conexpo 2016 was, Tanna says, “The experience was one of a kind. I congratulate my team and the organisers of the event, for pulling off such an amazing show this year. Though the first day didn’t go as expected due to a public holiday, footfalls gradually picked up the succeeding 4 days. As always the response was overwhelming.”
Adding further, he said, “We are proud to have sold 4 of our plants (two MSD 3000 with HRC and two 120 cum/hr Concrete Batching Plant) on the spot and bagged more orders. Our order book is satisfactorily full as the year is coming to an end.”
Not all eggs in one basket With the government changing policies, it is obvious that company’s policy will be framed with those guidelines. Demonetisation is a heated topic for the business world. When asked about the strategy that Linnhoff will apply, Tanna said, “Demonetisation has not adversely affected us in the industry. The new government is bringing in new reforms and policies which will prove fruitful in the long run. As for Linnhoff India, with 65 per cent of the market share, that forms our core business strength is in asphalt plants. However we don’t believe in putting all our eggs in one basket. The road construction equipment market is very comprehensive, and to touch base with customer needs, one needs to be dynamic.” In conclusion, he says, “Our mission is to be regarded as a one stop solution to our customers’ asset construction and maintenance needs by offering comprehensive products right from batching plants, concrete pavers, road maintenance equipment and surface miners through strategic alliance for sales and after sales in India and neighbouring countries.” n
Columbia to have a significant growth spurt The future of Indian construction and equipment significantly depends on government spending on infrastructure, Vijay Kumbhani, Director, India, Columbia Machine Engineering (I) Pvt. Ltd.
V
ijay Kumbhani, Director, India, Columbia Machine Engineering (I) Pvt Ltd speaks about how 2017 will turn out to be for the construction industry, his projections about the business and the major strategies in place to realise the set targets. Construction industry on improvement mode “The future of Indian construction and equipment significantly depends on government spending on infrastructure,” says Kumbhani. He further adds, “The continued slowdown in infrastructure and real estate sectors in India results in a weak market for our machinery. The steps being taken by the present government to clear stalled infrastructure projects and increase infrastructure spending on roads, ports, smart cities, industrial and freight corridors should greatly improve market conditions in the near future.”
Consolidating the position to grow the business Sharing his projections for the business, Kumbhani said, “We have just launched our larger concrete block machine model SPM 30 at Bauma ConExpo, along with automated handling of pallets, racks and products. This will provide the Indian customer with the next generation of concrete block plant with higher capacity and handling automation made in India at an affordable price.” Kumbhani further adds, “With this launch, we expect to consolidate our dominant position as the industry leader in India and grow our business significantly. With the increase in housing and infrastructure requirements, concrete block industry will also grow simultaneously.” Looking through the eyes of the customer Kumbhani is very clear when it comes to applying the strategies to realise the market. He says, “In an economically slow market situation it is very difficult to come up with the right strategy.” He further adds, “However, we have been practicing the simple principle of ‘through the eyes of the customer’ and we are sure that this will carry the day for us, on the other hand we are utilising the time to design and build the new, better and bigger products and also we are in process of augmenting our production capability by adding new machines and infra to be ready for the surge in the market.” n January 2017

Cosben expects double-digit growth to continue in 2017 We feel proud to announce that almost 99 per cent of our products and components are developed and “Made in India”. Amit D Popatwala, Managing Partner, Cosben Equipment
C
osben Equipment is a home grown manufacturer in powder material handling equipment such as conveying and feeding equipment, specially developed dust /pollution control solutions, valves and actuators, aeration systems for fluidisation, pressure control equipment, vibratory equipment and bag unloading equipment. Having established the brand and goodwill in the construction, cement, glass and paint industries, the company is now diversifying into other sectors like chemicals, food and pharma and its Managing Partner Amit D. Popatwala is quite upbeat on this movement. Excerpts from his interview:
Which are the sectors that are driving the growth of your company? Apart from construction sector, cement, glass and paint are the sectors where powder is handled in bulk. These are the ones that are helping us grow. What are the opportunities you foresee in this domain? It’s high time that all the sectors start moving at a brisk pace. Many major projects are announced by the government which will fuel the increase in the demand. There may be a kind of slowdown due to demonetisation. However, by the end of the January, we expect the situation to be normal. What are your expectations for 2017? In terms of growth, we expect the growth to continue in double digits like it has been for the past two years. Apart from the current focus
sectors, we would like to diversify our focus in to chemicals, food and pharma. We have introduced specialised screw conveyors with the intention to target these sectors. It’s our endeavour to churn out new products on periodical basis, based on industry needs. One of such product is Automatic Bag Slitting Machine which has been very well accepted not only by local customers but also by overseas customers. This product has been fetching us substantial revenue and instrumental in our growth. We feel proud to announce that almost 99 per cent of our products and components are developed and “Made in India”.
What will be your growth focus for the next one year? Without food and pharma, we expect a growth of 20 per cent over the past year. However, if we include food and pharma, we target a growth up to 30-35 per cent. We will have a clear picture about our readiness in the food and pharma industry by the end of May 2017. How are the things moving at the construction sector? The way we were expecting a surge in the demand, it has not taken place. Hence the growth is steady. We are looking at reducing the cost and providing more dimensions to our business. The company was formed with the same philosophy. We will be holding hands with the OEMs to work on the same and we believe it will help us to grab more business across new spectrum. How about the competition? There is not much of a local competition in the construction equipment sector for us. One needs to offer quality solutions on time. Our philosophy of offering “global quality at local price” is helping us to stand out from the competition. Can you tell about the company’s presence in the overseas market? First and foremost, we wanted to get well-established in the local market. That is why for the first year, we did not try to extend our reach in the overseas markets. However, in subsequent period, we started exporting our products to Middle East, Far East, Africa and Europe (including Italy) a kind of reverse trend about which we are very proud of. We are developing products to suit the strict norms of developed economies, so as to cater their market. n January 2017

As the mining industry is going through a difficult phase, what are your strategies to remain competitive? Yes, mining industry especially coal mining is not doing well. Joy Global has taken an initiative globally to venture into other minerals like hard rock, copper, zinc, salt and phosphate. In this direction, we have acquired a Canadian company called Mining Technologies International, Inc. (MTI) in 2014. MTI is a manufacturer of underground hard rock mining equipment serving the North American markets and a leading supplier of raise bore drilling consumables. We have also acquired Doosan Infracore’s hydraulic breaker and attachment business Montabert in 2015. How is the scenario in India? What are your objectives as far as Indian market is concerned? In India, coal mining is yet to stay because of the requirement of power and we have to depend on coal-fired power plants. Going by the recent announcements of Coal India and the Ministry of Coal regarding production ramping up to 1.5 billion tonnes by 2020-21, there is a great opportunity.

How unique is your HAC and how are you going to promote this concept in India? HAC (high angle conveyor) system is a versatile and money-saving method for elevating or lowering materials continuously from one level to another at extremely steep angles. Over the years, this system has been successfully used in a variety of commercial applications, conveying a wide range of materials. To be very precise, HAC is a substitute for dump trucks. In a surface open cast mine there is a long haulage road that results non-environment friendly emissions. In this context, HAC technology can be useful that can take the materials from down the pit to the surface directly at a steep angle of even 90 degree. This eliminates truck movement quite a lot therefore it is much cleaner. Have you started introducing this technology in India? HAC is almost 60-year old concept globally and in India we are working with Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI). Recently they have got an approval for a pilot project at South Eastern Coalfields Limited. We are working with them and hopefully in couple of years we will be installing the prototype. Have you been supplying to Coal India as well? Earlier we have supplied equipment to Coal India. But recently due to the L1 (lowest bidder) tender system, a lot of Chinese players are coming across. So we have requested Coal India to be more specific on the technical specifications and strictly adhere to that. This will enable them to get the access of best technologies – not only the lowest price. What are the other difficulties you face while competing with Chinese players? Unfortunately we cannot resize our products or remove technologies from our products to become cost-competitive. We cannot even remove the world-class safety systems from our products to remain competitive with the Chinese companies. So we try to make the specifications in such a fashion that the bidder who is bidding for the particular equipment must have those key features in the product. n

On the sidelines of Bauma Conexpo India 2016, B2B Purchase caught up with the company’s Managing Director Jayesh Vadukiya. Here’s excerpt from his interview: What is your outlook on the construction industry in India? The outlook for construction industry in India is very positive for us. There is the need of extensive growth in the construction industry. In the last two years the condition of the industry has improved and we expect faster growth now. What are the areas that you are prominently looking at? The new target that we have set for ourselves is wind power generation sector. Our suspended platforms are becoming increasingly popular in maintenance of the windmills. We would look forward to pan India markets for wind power sector especially Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Can you comment on the competition with the MNCs?

There is not much of a problem when it comes to competition. With the competition we grow better and better. We believe that healthy competition adds to the innovation. What is the current volume of the business? What is the number of units you sold last year? In 2016, we made a sale of around 400 rope suspended platforms. Along with that we have cutting and bending machines. We also have introduced scaffolding that has contributed to a considerable sale in the last year. What are your offerings in the scaffolding sector? We are new into the scaffolding sector and providing our expertise through rental. We have introduced aluminium scaffolding system that is fast replacing conventional scaffolding like bamboo due to safety and ease in use. Why rental? The rental market is in a good shape in all the sectors. We plan to provide rental services in the scaffolding sector throughout India. That will give us a growth in the business. What is your focus for 2017? The focus for the next year is on the suspended platform and bar bending and cutting segments. The growth in the last quarter will decide our target for the next year. Do you plan to expand the manufacturing units? We are planning to expand our bar bending and cutting business. We want to increase the production to 100 units per month from the current capacity of producing 30-40 units per month. Your comments on the demonetisation decision... The demonetisation will not have any adverse effect on our business. However we will have to wait for the things to settle down, but I am optimistic about the positive impact of this landmark decision. n

FE, a specialist in formwork system for building projects, has introduced a self climbing system for safe working at height, informs Ketan Shah, Managing Director, MFE Formwork Technology India.
What is your projection for 2017? The year gone by was not as good as 2015 and we hope that the year 2017 has something in it. The things will not be easy as a result of the after effects of demonetisation and other factors. We are an industry that is dependent on the real estate market, which is perceived to be worst affected due to demonetisation. Hence unless the real estate sector improves, which could be at least next 4-5 months the business will be challenging. What are the challenges that were faced by you during the past year? There is a slowdown in the launching of new projects. So the demand of formwork has come down. A lot of players have entered the market; hence the competition has also increased. What per cent of variance in demand have you observed? It was a strange situation in 2016 till November! It was not that there were no orders. We had secured enough orders, but those did not materialise in terms of delivery due to delay in project execution. The orders might have dropped by 5-10 per cent. However, the execution has

January 2017
So what’s your revival strategy? We are completely reviving our business strategy with value engineering. We are redesigning or products and production process to bring down the end-product costs as pricing is one of the major criteria in today’s market. With the introduction of stir friction welding which is so far being used in aviation industry, we are able to give far better quality at lower cost. Isn’t it the right time to introduce a new product to current industry demand? Our current focus is to reduce the final product costs by applying various innovative measures. We are also exploring various other products. However, it is too early to say anything as of now. How do you look at the industry in the mindand long-term? Once the demonetisation wave settles, the industry will move upward. However it may take at least next two quarters and we can expect some positive movement third quarter onwards. The government’s focus on mass housing projects may result in some breather for us as our formworks are used only in building development projects. Did you develop any new product? We have developed a self climbing system for safe working at height. We completed the testing of this product in a project in Malaysia and now we have put it in the market. The product will be delivered for a Mumbai project which is expected to start in January. We are expecting few more orders. What are the advantages of this system? Safety is a very important factor when it comes to working at a height of say 40 storeys. It also puts lots of psychological pressure on workers. Unless you provide a safe working environment for the worker, it is very difficult to get desired output. The self climbing system gives complete safety as it has perforated MS wind screen all around the building. A labour can walk freely with complete peace of mind and perform his work even when wind speed is high. n

Due to innovative products, superior technical solutions and Layher’s absolute customer orientated service package Layher has become the standard in scaffolding systems worldwide.
To build the greenhouses with their diameters of 11 and 9 metres and heights of 15 and 11 metres respectively, it was necessary to put up complex work scaffolding. On the one hand the scaffolding had to fit within a small space owing to the nearby river, and on the other it had to provide full access to the interior and exterior of both structures during every phase of construction. This included the “neck area” connecting the ultramodern domes to the existing brick building, the area around the foundation and finally the central area

The Allround Scaffolding offers unsurpassed versatility to be used in Layher’s present product characteristics and services help customers achieve long-term success and increase the profitability of their companies construction sites, chemical industry, power plants, aircraft, shipyards, event sector, theatres and arenas. Allround Scaffold applications
Scaffolding is a challenging task. The scaffolding had to be constructed that exactly followed the complex contours of two new greenhouses. The Allround Scaffolding was the natural choice. Its comprehensive range of parts not only made it possible to put together the circular structure without difficulty and modify it as the work progressed, the bolt-free wedge-head connection technology allowed the work to go very fast.
The modular system with its comprehensive range of parts offers unbeatable versatility, in particular for dealing with extremely challenging environments or complex architecture. Thus the circular scaffolding was erected step by step without any trouble. The high load-bearing capacity of the Allround system allowed safe, material-saving assembly even though access to the site was limited. Another important advantage was the system’s high degree of adaptability, because the scaffolding had to be modified on a continuous basis. And this had to be done very quickly in order to keep pace with the construction schedule. The modifications were made easy by bolt-free wedge-head connection technology and precisely fitting, self-explanatory assembly using system components. Thus the scaffolding erectors succeed in implementing a well-though-out structure that gave craftsmen of various trades safe access at all times Continued to 62

Paschal sees opportunities in defence for underground construction After couple of sluggish years in most of segments due to India’s economic reasons, we are expecting a boom in the defence sector during 2017-18 especially in the underground construction projects. Manikandan Mahalingam, Technical Manager, Paschal Formwork India
How do you see the technological transition in the field of formwork? After a couple of years of sluggishness, we could see some upbeat in the infrastructural and construction project execution. Based on that, we have modified some of our products that are going to be useful for our customers. We have introduced the adjustable modular formwork that is useful for residential building industry. Further, the product being versatile can be used in other sectors as well. As most of the construction industry is adapting to shear wall technology, our adjustable modular column formwork will allow us to cater to this new segment. The simple universal principle enables to form a variety of different reinforced concrete columns from just a few individual panels of the adjustable modular column formwork. RFID (Radio Frequency Identifier) embedded in our modular panels can be an effective tool for asset management.
Today, the focus is on reducing cost, increasing productivity and ease in handling of formwork. What is your take on this regard? In any segment of construction projects, maximum utilisation of resources reduces the cost and gives us return on investment. Paschal’s modular is a system that suits in any segments, thereby provide maximum usage in any project. For the horizontal sections, we use lightweight Paschal deck which increase the productivity and are easy to handle. Together, these products make an excellent combination to attain all three benefits mentioned above. It also reduces the cycle time compared to slab systems thereby offers better cost advantage. The USP of this system is flexibility that allows overlapping in any dimension in either direction.

Depending on availability, the formwork systems can be moved completely by using a crane or can be dismantled into individual components for material movement and assemble manually in a project. Our products can be racked in an effective manner in space constraint situation too.
What about the reusages? Paschal products are known for their repetitions because the skin parts (surface) can be used for about 250 times. The same can be refurbished in our factory at Vizag even after using it for 250 times within a span of 4 years or so. About 20 per cent of the costs go in to the refurbishment. The frame can be used for approximately 20 years after timely refurbishment. Moreover, to adapt the technology in to our systems, we have incorporated RFID in to it. Now a user can feed and track all the parameters of a system – how long and how many times it has been used etc. We are also offering our services of redesigning with available Paschal formwork forfree of cost and it save’s timeeffectively for our customers.
Do you provide training too? We consider every project of our clients as our own project. We depute our own engineers to provide support to the endusers especially during the initial 2-3 cycles. During this time we make the users get acquainted with our systems. We don’t leave any site unless the people responsible at end users are not adequately trained. We also provide occasional training at our center in Hyderabad for budding engineers and formwork enthusiasts. What is your focus for 2017? Paschal entered in the Indian market in 2010 and has emerged as one of the leaders in the industry. We have been present in all the segments of constructions like, infrastructure, industrial, commercial, power and buildings all through these years and are now focusing on the industrial and defence sectors. After couple of sluggish years in most of segments due to India’s economic reasons, we are expecting a boom in the defence sector during 2017-18 especially in the underground construction projects. What is your revenue target for 2017? Our target remains satisfied customers than the figure based. We wish to add about 24 new customers every year, in addition to serving our value happy customers. As of now we are focusing more on our popular modular formwork, as it suits Indian industry perfectly. Gradually we will be introducing more products to strengthen the portfolio and diverse our reach. n

ZINCALUME steel jacketing for thermal insulation
Z
INCALUME steel meets the growing demands of a changing built environment for durability, resilience and sustainability. It is designed not only for the distinctive architectural applications such as roofing panels, wall panels and metal tiles, but also other special applications where corrosion resistance and longevity are of top priority. The thermal insulation for piping especially in processing industry, plays a vital role. It is highly imperative to maintain the required temperatures of fluids or gases. In applications like hot / cold insulation properly designed ‘Insulation System’ enables achieving targets set through energy conservation, implementing the designed insulation system, through best erection practices at work site. Typically the material used for jacketing are aluminium sheet, aluminised steel, stainless steel, zinc coated steel and 55 per cent aluminiumzinc alloy coated steel. ZINCLAUME steel is preferred material due to its excellent impact resistance, higher strength, flexibility and excellent corrosion resistance and economical in some of the processing industry requirements. The 55 per cent aluminium-zinc alloy coating provides both the long term corrosion resistance of aluminium along with the galvanic protection of zinc at scratches and cut edges.

ZINCLAUME steel jacketing outlasts regular galvanised steel in marine salt spray and industrial atmospheres for a long lasting installation. It provides superior fire resistance and protection compared to aluminium. The special alloy coating of aluminium and zinc combines the best properties of both metals; it has the corrosion resistance, high temperature oxidation resistance, and heat reflectivity of aluminium with the formability and galvanic protection of cut edges (typical characteristic of zinc). ZINCLAUME steel roll jacketing is primarily used as a thermal insulation jacketing over piping and equipment when the design considerations require greater fire resistance than that offered by aluminium, but at a cost that is less than stainless steel. However, it is not recommended for harsh acidic chemical environments. It is recommended that it should not be allowed to come in contact with lead, copper or water runoff from any copper source. There shall be no contact with cement or concrete at any point.
thickness of insulation shall be carefully calculated so that the temperature transmitted to external jacketing shall not exceed more than 45 C to 50 C. Though ZINCALUME steel can perform up to 350 C before alloy metallic coating embitterment occurs but the resin will flash off by 200 C. Hence, it is recommended that in no case the temperature on external ZINCALUME steel sheet shall be more than 150 C for better performance of the product. Prominent players in insulation jacketing business like Lloyd insulations have comprehensive competence to execute industrial Thermal insulation projects on turnkey basis that live upto international standards. With an expertise in design, fabrication, supply and installation of advanced insulation, they cater to the special, individual requirements that the projects demand. J
ashan Bhoomkar, Director, Soujanya Color Pvt Ltd share his take on how this year will be for the industry, his projections for Soujanya and the strategies that will be undertaken to achieve the set targets.
Indian construction industry will have an expansion Sharing his thoughts on how the year will be for the Indian construction industry, Jashan Bhoomkar, says, “India’s construction industry will continue to expand over the forecast period (2016–2020), with investments in residential, infrastructure and energy projects continuing to drive growth. Various government flagship programs, including 100 Smart Cities Mission, Housing for All, Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Transformation (AMRUT), Make in India and Power for All – will be the growth drivers. The industry’s output value in real terms is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.65 per cent over the forecast period; up from 2.95 per cent during the review period (2011–2015).” He further stated, “There are certain challenges associated with India’s construction industry outlook. Limited funding, slow policy reforms and a weak currency are factors that will continue to limit the growth potential during the early part of the forecast period. Due to industrialisation, urbanization, a rise in disposable income and population growth the demand for construction services is set to rise. The government efforts to improve the country’s residential and transport infrastructure will also support growth.”

Demonetisation to cause a slight drop Projecting the status of the industry in the coming year, Bhoomkar says, “Industry is likely to grow by 1517 per cent. However, with recent demonetisation there would be slight drop in business potential. We feel that, this would be temporary effect on the market. Eventually construction industry has a good potential to grow.” He further says, “As a colour manufacturing company, we understand importance of colour and its strong relationship not only with aesthetics but also with performance, particularly for the construction domain. Broadly, we cater to three key aspects of the construction domain – decoration, protection and flooring.”
Decent technology at affordable price When asked about the strategies that can be used to achieve the set targets, Bhoomkar says, “The market is demanding and increasing. Government policies are looking to be in favour of growing market challenges by investing more and more money into infrastructure development. Meeting government demands itself would be a challenge in front of Indian companies. A demand for a decent technology at affordable price for lower segment of the market is going grow giving opportunity to companies like us to grow, penetrate and be a part of nation building.” Bhoomkar further comments, “Innovation is a key to meet the growing performance demands on any product. At the same time, we are focusing on having sustainable innovation, using maximum ‘green’ resources to have minimum impact on environment. If the products are ‘green’ they will be welcomed by the society at a large. World is looking at India and also Government is projecting India as a manufacturing hub. Companies need to invest lot of money in building manufacturing capabilities to produce quality products at a faster rate.” He concludes saying, “At the last, skilled manpower is required to develop products as per changing demands, producing quality products and for supply chain and end application. Lot of training programs are organized in improving skills of the human resource.” n

Tough time, courtesy demonetisation As per Ramesh, it is in everyone’s opinion that the construction industry is going through a turmoil in general and building segment in particular. “This could be attributed to the liquidity crunch in the market partly owing to the so called ‘Demonetisation’ policy of the government and partly due to the market sentiments. This is expected to be continued until the first quarter of the next financial year, unless some big boost is provided to the construction Industry in the impending Union Budget which is around the corner.” He however adds, “The governments policies like reduction of housing loan, announcement of major infrastructure projects in the transport segments such as NHAI and state government roads, railways, sea ports and airports can be game changers and agents of progress in the construction industry.”

This industry is likely to undergo a paradigm shift due to the fact of government’s ‘Housing policy for all by 2022’ .” Speaking further, he said, “As the Government is planning super support for developing untapped areas like, the development of townships and their associated infrastructure in new arenas, better future trends and scopes are envisaged for the Indian construction industry. It is only a matter of time with the current buffer period posing to be a threat to be completely changed into a realm of frenzy activities ahead with renewed vigour and map for growth.” According to Raghunathan, the current user friendly norms for FDI in 15 sectors including real estate and construction development gives a very

positive platform for construction sector to be exposed to a wider economy. He says, “Updating its growth projection from the one it issued in April 2017, the IMF said in 2016 and 2017 India is projected to grow at a rate of 7. 4 per cent.”
Cera-Chem to have a positive organic growth Sharing the projections that he has for the business, Raghunathan said, “Our business trend shows a primariodal growth path despite the lower CAGR trends. We envisage a positive organic growth with a minimum of 12 per cent overall viz-a-viz last year’s projected performance. We also feel the increase in high value low volume products making the balancing act with low value high volume products netting the effect towards positive side, increasing the WASP (Weighted Average Selling Price) perse.” He further stated, “This is based exclusively on the new constructions, repair and rehabilitation opportunistic sales as per answer number one and prolonged integrated construction network enhancement.” Generating avenues will be the key Sharing the strategies that will be used by CeraChem to achieve the set targets, Raghunathan said, “Generation of new avenues in the existing, futuristic construction practices along with new avenues in the place of repair and rehabilitation practices would do justice to this goal. With respect to the decorative products which also forms part of construction industries’ contribution, we are into a new set of wall coating products of its own kind which will play ‘prima ballerinos’ role in the coming days which are eco-friendly and promising towards acceptance by major target audience.” Raghunathan further said, “Another arena would be dealing with liquid applied membrane which will turn ‘elasto-plastic’ post application and with enormous strength and flexibility will serve as an excellent waterproofing membrane where the strains and constrains of conventional torching.” He further added, “We firmly believe that the niche products as cited above along with coating products for marble and stones of high architectural value would also help us increase the reality of achievement of the set targets. Terrace flooring, anti-aging coating products, anti-root products etc., are also introduced to attain the extrapolated targets for the year 2017.” n

nandita Kakkar, Deputy General Manager, Kryton Buildmat Company Pvt Ltd shares how this year will be for the industry and her projections for the business.
Infrastructure and manufacturing to be the buzzwords “We are moving through very interesting times. The economy is shifting and changing every day. Where real estate was the ruling the roost for close to a decade in the Indian economy, infrastructure and manufacturing are the new buzzwords,” says Anandita. She further says, “Airports, railways, metro, transportation and water and electricity infrastructure is developing at a rate never seen before. The country is going through a maze of economic changes and this is reflecting on the way construction companies and their auxiliary services are moving. Looking at the trends of the past year the industry view is upbeat but cautious.” Anandita believes that the biggest game changer will have to be to look at construction differently.

Sharing the company’s projections for the business, Anandita says, “As I stated earlier with the economy shifting, it is too early to do definite projections, but without doubt, we know that the next year will bring with it opportunities which have till date not been available. I believe it is the time of the Tier 2 and 3 cities to now show a sharp boom in the construction. These cities are just a few steps behind when it comes to infrastructure and development. However, these cities are also the gateway to manufacturing as they have space and human resource easily available.” She further adds, “Also with more and more international brands entering these cities, the need for better infrastructure, housing and entertainment is a top priority.” Anandita is a also sure that this year there will be a shift towards warehousing and factory which in turn will push the transportation infrastructure into over drive. Adding on this, Anandita says, “Our projections are positive and will move in the direction of growth.”
Entering markets with good technology Stating the strategy that Kryton will be using to reach the set targets, Anandita said, “We have set the structure in place to enter markets with minimal reach of good technology. We are expanding through manpower and by adding new products and packaging into our product mix.” Anandita further says, “Our strategy has always been simple - to focus on client satisfaction and give best products at market friendly prices. We have always paid great attention to quality solutions that actually work for our clients, because in our industry repeat customer is the key to success.” “Our BIS and ISO certifications are a proof of our quality consciousness,” she concludes. n

How to rehabilitate building structure Some FAQs on building repairs. From the beginning of 20th century, cement concrete and cement mortar based on ordinary Portland cement, have been accepted as the main building materials for the construction of buildings and the infra-structures, considering the ease, speed and the strength they offer. However, every building undergoes wear and tear thus deteriorating with time. A J Charles, Director, Perma Construction Aids Pvt Ltd answers to some of the FAQs that help in structural rehabilitation of buildings. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Why do buildings show cracks after a few years? Buildings show cracks because of two main reasons and hence there are two types of cracks. Multi storied buildings are more of dynamic structures rather than static. They go through the normal phenomenon of settlement, deflections, vibrations and movement because of the movements of loads and wind. With time this dynamism causes some stresses, which show up in the form of cracks in the walls ceiling etc. Such cracks are only plaster deep. In the case of reinforced concrete, moisture reaches the steel by leakage or because of the porosity of concrete. This water in the presence of carbon dioxide oxidises the steel and causes rusting or corrosion. This expanded steel puts lot of pressure on the neighbouring concrete and the concrete develops cracks. The cracks due to corrosion appear on the columns and beams. These cracks are larger and generally associated with brown coloured stains.
How to identify that the building has a structural problem?
86
B2B Purchase
January 2017
Cracks in the columns and beams, cracks associated brown stains and large chunks of concrete falling off from the RCC members and cracks being very big are all signs of corrosion to indicate that the building has structural problems. Physical examination of the steel by a competent structural repair Consultant, after removal of the cover concrete establishes the degree of the problem.
Is it safe to stay in buildings that have corrosion problems? Since the process of corrosion progresses very fast and could cause the collapse of the structure it is advisable that the repairs are carried out faster. If the sound steel is reduced to less half its original volume, then it is not safe to stay in such buildings. It could be a great risk to life and valuables stored in such buildings.
How do we know whether reinforcement is corroded? Brown marks associated with the cracks indicate corrosion. Bigger cracks on the beams and columns also indicate corrosion. A physical inspection after removing the cover concrete will show the corrosion if it is there. Corroded reinforcements can be separated, by picking from the fingers, as they are very weak.
When to take up repairs? Repairs need to be taken up immediately after the first signs of the corrosion to steel are detected so that the minimum damage can be repaired economically. Any season is suitable for repairs except the rainy season.
What causes corrosion of reinforcement? Corrosion is caused by the oxidation of steel. Reinforcing steel when comes in contact with atmospheric carbon dioxide in the presence of moisture the corrosion process starts and spreads fast like a cancer. Ground water containing chlorides sulphates etc, rising in the capillaries of the concrete when comes in contact with the reinforcing steel the reaction between the two oxidizes the steel and the corrosion process starts. Do leakages cause corrosion? Yes leakages are the main cause of corrosion of steel. Hence a good waterproofing treatment always ensures a protective atmosphere around the steel for a long time and contributes to the longevity of the structure.
Which are the main products used in structural rehabilitation? Styrene Butadiene rubber and Acrylic Polymers (pure acrylic emulsions) are the main products which are used in a slurry form with cement as the anti corrosive coating over the steel reinforcements. Mortars modified with these products from the protective corrosion inhibiting cover concrete. These mortars show strengths in excess of the parent concrete. n

Mott MacDonald Bentley demonstrates BIM leadership
in UK water industry to commissioning that could also manage information from other vendors’ applications as well as interoperate with SAP.
Llanpumsaint WWTW - MMB’s first project delivered using global design centre and connected data environment
I
n 1999, global multi-discipline consultancy Mott MacDonald formed a joint venture with civil engineering contractor JN Bentley, creating Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB). The joint venture, now wholly owned by Mott MacDonald Group, grew steadily over its first decade serving the UK water industry.
MMB selected OpenPlant PID and a successful pilot program proved the seamless exchange of information between Autodesk Revit and OpenPlant PID. This workflow freed data that was historically buried within third-party applications and enables it to be controlled and managed more easily, through a simple interface, by engineers and technicians. The data can be verified and approved as any other MMB deliverable. This represents a significant step forward toward delivering a synchronised set of numerical and visual data as an asset information model, and assists MMB clients with achieving their aspirations for better information management. Simon Kerr, senior project technologies consultant, Mott MacDonald, said, “Bentley’s ProjectWise has had a hugely positive influence on MMB over the past four years. It has helped us scale our business significantly to meet the demands of the new AMP period by providing a rigorous and robust means of storing all technical information on over 500 projects.” n
MMB selected Bentley’s ProjectWise as the cornerstone of its information management and connected data environment strategy. The adoption of a BIM methodology, together with a well-established, robust, and rigorous information management system, contributed to MMB’s ability double the size of its operation in a little more than two years. ProjectWise and OpenPlant, Bentley’s applications for plant design modelling, introduced rigor into the management of BIM project information to improve the flow of information through all stages of the projects. This methodology helped MMB improve compliance within its own stringent IMS system and exceed client expectations. MMB leverages ProjectWise’s connected data environment, which ensures the integrity of project information across the project lifecycle, for the entire Mott McDonald group. MMB capitalises on the expertise and resource availability of global teams adopting a consistent and rigorous way of working and as an internal client to the Global Design Centre in Chennai. This process has allowed MMB to save more than 50 per cent in costs on aspects of its design work, and increased daily productivity by 62.5 per cent. A large proportion of the work conducted by MMB in AMP6 is process-engineering related. As such, it became a business imperative to adopt a consistent means of delivering intelligent process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). In short, it required a system that would facilitate a seamless flow of information from the outset of the design through January 2017

Welding
Technology
TIG Welding: A technology to clad pipes Another major concern is making sure that production lines are corrosion resistant. If the concentration of chloride, carbon dioxide or sulphur ions exceeds a certain level, the high strength low alloy C-Mn steel can corrode at a rate of about 0.2mm per year. Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA) such as austenitic and martensitic stainless steel and nickel-base and titanium-base alloys can withstand the strain of the corrosive chemicals.
Corrosion resistant alloy clad pipe To combine the strength of low-alloyed Carbon steel with the corrosion resistance of CRAs, the inside of C-Mn steel pipes is covered with a layer of a suitable corrosion resistant alloy. Excellent bonding between the parent metal of the outer pipe and the deposited layer inside can be achieved if overlay cladding is applied. CRA clad steel pipes are characterised by the firm metallurgical bond between the host pipe and the inner CRA layer. It meets the highest quality standards.
TIGer-weld overlay cladding of advanced metallurgical quality
T
he safe production and transport of oil and gas is highly dependent on reliable pipelines. Currently, there are several million miles of onshore and offshore pipelines that are currently in use.
Offshore pipelines and their constraints Production lines are used to transport production fluids from subsea wells and manifoldsto offshore processing facilities, loading buoys, and S2B (subsea to beach). These production fluids are still unprocessed and are usually composed of hydrocarbons from gas and condensates, crude oil, water and solid impurities in varying proportions. Where the pipes close to connect with the subsea wells, the pipes often have to carry crude oil which is of a very high pressure and temperature. Whilst design regulations for pipelines are less stringent than those for production lines, there is a growing demand for higher quality pipelines due to the immense environmental damage which leaks or failures of tubular structures can cause. Due to the declining productivity of existing wells, operators are forced to extend their exploration activities into deeper offshore waters. Consequently ever more production lines, with improved mechanical strength, will be necessary.
The TIG weld overlay cladding process is becoming ever more popular for the manufacturing of CRA clad steel pipes. It is known for providing a smooth and regular surface with only small variations in thickness. The layer has ‘zero defects’, no pores, no lack of fusion and particularly low dilution rates. Conventional GTAW/ TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas) is characterised by the creation of an electric arc between a refractory metal (alloyed tungsten) electrode and the workpiece in an atmosphere filled with inert gas. The electrode withstands the high temperature of the arc and directs it towards the fusion zone. The impact of the electrons causes the fusion of the parent metal, forming the weld pool which is shielded by the inert gas flow. In case of the Hot Wire TIG process, the wire is preheated by the Joule effect of a separate current which is provided by an additional power source. Hot Wire TIG cladding allows increased melting rates and advanced productivity without compromising the reliability of the process or the quality of the deposited layers.

Welding
Technology
TIG Welding: A technology to clad pipes 104 f
Wire cladding applications have been made yet more efficient thanks to a recent development, known as TIGer technology. It is based on a new torch design. Whilst a common TIG torch has one single tungsten electrode, the distinct TIGer torch is equipped with two electrodes. Each electrode is supplied with current by its own power source. The low arc pressure of the TIGer arc, combined with high welding intensity allows extremely fast welding speeds to be reached (over 1000mm/min). Furthermore, high deposition rates of 6 kg per hour or more per TIGer torch can be achieved, with only a low dilution rate between the deposited alloy and the substrate material. The dilution rates are less than 10 per cent for the first layer and 2 per cent for each of the following layers. If only one layer is deposited, it is possible to adjust the welding parameters to limit the dilution at 6 per cent. It is possible to optimise the thickness of each layer to within a range of 1.0 to 3.0mm, this meets all known codes and standards.
Consequently only the exact quantity of corrosion resistant alloy material need be added, which creates significant cost savings, considering the cost of CRA filler products.
Conclusion TIGer overlay cladding technology is an advantageous way to satisfy the increasing demand for metallurgical bond CRA clad steel pipe. It is of a suitable quality for production lines and the crude oil exploration. The technology is 100 per cent defect-free CRA depositions, reasonable investments, increased efficiency and high flexibility are the reasons why companies have chosen and are successfully using Polysoude’s unique cladding technology in their production processes. n
