JCB wins $50 million U.S. army contract for high-speed backhoes J
CB has won a $50 million contract to supply high-speed backhoe loaders to the United States Army. The High Mobility Engineer Excavators (HMEEs) will be manufactured at JCB’s North American plant in Savannah, Georgia, and will be delivered by 2017, the company said issuing a statement. The US Army was the first military organisation to purchase HMEEs when in 2005 it ordered 636 of the machines – a JCB contract that was worth $ 206 million and which today remains the biggest single order in JCB’s 68-year history. Since then the company has gone on to sell the machine to armed forces in the UK, Sweden, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand and other allied nations. JCB Chief Executive Graeme Macdonald said, “Over the past 30 years, JCB has supplied armies in 57 countries with over 4,000 machines and we are delighted to build on that success by securing this latest contract with the United States Army.”

tractor to have full suspension and antilock brakes. The machine also comes with blast protection systems, so effective that on several occasions it has saved the lives of operators who have encountered improvised explosive devices while on duty in conflict zones.
According to JCB, engineered in Britain and produced in the USA, the 16-tonne HMEE revolutionised the way military engineering tasks were tackled. Capable of speeds of up to 60 mph, the HMEE is able to keep up with military convoys on the road, eliminating the need to transport the machine using a truck and a low-loader.
The machine being supplied under the new contract is the HMEE-1 model complete with brand new air delivery capability by C-17 aircraft. It is also air transportable in a C130 Hercules aircraft. The contract also includes the provision of training and service support. The machines supplied will be a mix of A-kit unprotected models and B-kit models with full crew protection.
As a result roads can be cleared, obstacles removed and routes for the opposition blocked with great efficiency. This is all achieved by combining the digging and loading capabilities of the world-renowned JCB backhoe loader and the innovative high-speed JCB Fastrac tractor, the only
The HMEE-1 boasts a 6.7-litre diesel engine and is four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer. It can lift 1.8 tonnes and dig to a depth of around 13 feet. It is offered in a base model, a fullcrew protection model and a much enhanced protection NATO Theatre Entry Standard model. n

How safe is your aerial work platform In primary stage of any construction project, proper access equipment play a vital role. Safer the aerial work platforms, safer the built project and hence their safety should be taken care of
A
n Aerial Work Platform (AWP), also known as an aerial device, is a mechanical device used to provide temporary access for people or equipment to inaccessible areas, usually at height. They are generally used for temporary, flexible access purposes such as maintenance and construction work. AWPs may also be equipped with specialist equipment, such as carrying frames for window glass. They are

usually capable of being set up and operated by a single person. Therefore, it is obviously important to look at and take care of AWPs from their safety point of view.
Safety first The majority of manufacturers and operators have strict safety criteria for the operation of AWPs. In some countries, a licence and/or insurance is required to operate some types of AWP. Most protocols advocate training every
operator, whether mandated or not. In AWPs offer many advantages. AWPs actually need to get fitted with safety or guard rails around the platform itself to contain operators and passengers. Extreme caution must be taken when using AWPs in the vicinity of overhead power lines. AWPs often come equipped with a variety of tilt sensors. Some models of AWPs additionally feature counterweights while some lifts are also fitted with sensors which 14

of working at heights like scaffolding, ladders, gondolas etc. In addition, AWPs are much quicker to set up as compared to its conventional alternatives.”

prevent operation if the weight on the platform exceeds the safe working load. However, the advantages offered by AWPs are always considered to get built the project in quick time. Commenting on the advantages of AWPs, Ketan Patel, Director, Maco Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. says, “AWP is the safest equipment available compared to the traditional methods

“Haulotte access equipment are manufactured as per European CE standards conforming to EN280, which are amongst the most stringent in terms of safety,” says Souma Ray, General Manager, Haulotte India Pvt. Ltd. “There are safety cut-off systems which prevent the machine to be overloaded or work at an outreach which can result in an accident due to negligence of the operator. Our objective is to produce machines which give a confidence to work at heights.” D Nalin Kumar, Product Manager, Palfinger Cranes India Pvt. Ltd., says, “Palfinger access platforms are custom designed for aerial applications. Our dedicated R&D team makes sure that the unit i.e. the access platform and the vehicle on which the AWP is mounted is completely safe even under robust conditions through various analysis.”
While safety is always the responsibility of the AWP operator, JLG Industries supports safe equipment operation through training, design, and meeting the applicable industry standards. JLG Industries provide decals on all JLG products that alert users and operators to important safety information. All operators are required to read and understand the machine’s operation and safety manual, be properly trained, and to complete all pre-start inspections prior to using the machine.
Safety features Here it will be helpful to see what safety features are being offered by current players in the industry for the purpose. Mr Ray describes some of them which are offered by Haulotte India: • High speed drive cut out: when the machine is unfolded while travelling at high speed there is a risk of the operator being thrown out of the platform in high speed drive function. To avoid such mishaps we provide with high speed drive cut out • Slope sensor: this doesn’t allow the machine to function above a certain degree of slope, so that the centre of gravity is not deviated from the perimeters of the machine • Overload: while working on height an overloaded platform can be a reason to create enough leverage to topple the machine. Hence we use overload sensor to cut off the function of machine when it is overloaded • Protection during scissor lowering: when the scissor is actually lowered, the machine cuts off for 3-5 seconds

There is no wonder that current players in the industry are; therefore, much more concerned about the safety factor they are delivering through their AWPs.
According to Mr Kumar, through this analysis the company makes sure the following: • Stability: to achieve safety factor 1.5 • To determine suitable truck based on the GVW, payload, front and rear axle load, PTO (power take off ), chassis etc. • Safety of the unit: for fully loaded conditions with respect to height, reach and weight • A project drawing based on the company’s analysis proving the unit safety will be handed over to the customer.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES at 3 metres of height. This enables the operator to check that there is no hindrance like a person standing or anything stuck in between the scissor arms while lowering the scissor below this height • Potholes: these are used in electrical scissors, so that the total weight of the machine is distributed equally under the surface area of the machine to give more stability. Moreover, Haulotte active shield bar is designed by Haulotte to reduce over head crushing injuries. The active shield bar is found near the controls in the basket, when the bar is moved 18 degree towards the controls; the active shield bar gets activated, which halts the machine and simultaneously activating the alarm and the flashing light. Once the alarm is activated, the operator can only lower the boom or reverse the machine. On the other hand, Maco Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. offers the complete ‘Genie’ range of products in India. Genie, a part of

the TEREX organisation, is an established brand in the production of material lifts, light towers, portable AWPs, scissor lifts, self-propelled telescopic booms, articulated booms and telehandlers. “Genie AWPs are manufactured in compliance to the International Standards such as ANSI, CE, CSA, and AUS. Hence the machines have all the safety features available,” informs Mr Patel. Mr Patel explains safety features of Genie machines. Few of which are: • Tilt alarms and function cut offs wherever needed to prevent the machines from further advancing thereby preventing accidents • Load sensors to indicate and stop overloading of the machine in all Maco machines (CE) • Touch sensors to stop the machine on the slightest impact in Maco’s boom lifts is offered as an accessory • Pothole guards in Maco’s scissor lifts • Emergency lowering systems.

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES teach about safety aspect, drawings etc. It also involves hands on training programme for operators and maintenance teams. At the end of the training, Maco conducts an evaluation system by which the eligible personnel are chosen who could be made responsible for operating the machine. Of course, it is not only the AWPs that should be considered responsible for all the safety offered, but the operators working on machines also should be well trained enough and capable.

We provide overload protection system with alarm. Further, emergency cut off, working light on the basket and safety belt, basket load measuring cell, radio remote control, and tool box are some more features from our side.” As per the JLG’s working system, a platform completely surrounds the operator and includes anchors for
connecting fall-protection harness and lanyards worn by operators. Controllers provide intuitive directional control to the equipment that is coupled with a means to prevent movement in the event a controller is accidently bumped. Further, AWPs also have control panels located at the ground to allow a safety spotter to override the operator’s controls on the work platform in the event of an emergency.
Training sessions Since safety is of paramount importance, proper operation and knowledge about AWPs is very important. To meet this aspect, Maco imparts proper hands on training to their customers’ operators time to time. Maco’s training programme includes a classroom sessions which

“We do conduct training for AWP operators on our machines for our customers. We do have standard training, depending on the model purchased,” informs Mr Ray. “We have three standard categories in training: operator, maintenance and troubleshooting. For operator and maintenance training, generally a day each is sufficient. While for troubleshooting training, it takes 2-3 days depending on the type of the model.” JLG also provides training to operators. The company provides training to customers as well through its network of local distributors who are trained directly by JLG. Thus the picture looks enough promising and satisfying on this front as well. After all, safe AWPs and equally safe operation ensure higher efficiency and productivity and that is what any construction project craves for. n
VOLVO CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
Demolishing without disturbing A SUCCESS STORY ON CHENNAI METRO RAIL LIMITED
“The Volvo line of excavators delivers maximum reach and stability with no vibration and very little noise. Now, that’s a killer combination for demolitions.” Mohan Ramanathan Managing Director, Advanced Construction Technologies (P) Ltd, Chennai It is never easy to introduce modernity in places rich in history. In a city like Chennai which has a history of 350 years, great architectural heritage and is so full of ‘oldworld’ charm, the problem gets further compounded. So, when the Metro Rail Project in the city - the largest public project in Tamil Nadu - got underway, the authorities of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) knew they had quite a challenge ahead. And they knew it had to do with demolitions - they had to get that right first before anything else. “You see, Chennai is home to hundreds of heritage structures, quite a few of them in the congested heart of the city along the alignment of the Metro,” says Mohan Ramanathan, Managing Director, Advanced Construction Technologies Ltd (ACT). “And you don’t mess around with Chennai’s architectural heritage - not the slightest bit.” ACT and VolvoCE are in the forefront of demolitions for the Chennai Metro Project. Together, they have been clearing up the ground for the laying of tracks in Phase 1 of the Project. So far, they have got their act absolutely right in the station locations at Mannady, Central Station, Thirumangalam and Washermanpet. “We are talking about text-book demolitions, really,” says Mohan Ramanathan. “It’s been swift, silent, smooth… with no untoward incidents and without disturbing day-to-day activity.”
Tearing them down with ease Starting with the razing of the Police Quarters at Mannady Station in the very busy Broadway Street through to the pulling down of the multistoried Hotel Picnic sandwiched between two famous heritage structures near Central Station, the demolitions have proceeded with minimum fuss and stress. “The tearing down of Hotel Picnic was a particularly tricky one,” says Mohan Ramanathan. “We had to ensure zero-damage to the landmark structures on either side - Ripon Building & Victoria Public Hall. The clearance area available was just 5m on both sides. But our Volvos pulled it off with ease!”
Volvo Construction Equipment
The Volvo line of Excavators have paved the way for Chennai’s dream metro project without disturbing the city’s architectural heritage
For the demolition of the 30m-high Hotel Picnic building and other structures, four Volvo machines were deployed - one each EC210, EC240, EC360 & EC460BLC excavators. The EC460BLC excavator was fitted with a 26m triple demolition boom and hydraulic crusher to tear down the reinforced concrete structure. No damage was caused to the heritage structures, notwithstanding the fact they were over 100 years old and made of masonry in lime mortar. “The Volvo line of excavators delivers maximum reach and stability with no vibration and very little noise. Now, that’s a killer combination for demolitions,” says Mohan Ramanathan.
According to him, Volvos are real workhorses with robust under-carriage system and demolition-grade hydraulics that ensure power and control are never compromised. The operators really enjoy working in the cool, comfortable Volvo cabins, he adds. This is the first time in Chennai that such a high-reach demolition machine has been used. And it has won instant approval from CMRL Project Managers. They find Volvo demolition equipment absolutely safe and recommend them for all future high-rise demolitions in the Project. “Well, Chennai has always been a ‘city of firsts’,” says Mohan Ramanathan. “We are sure glad to be in the list.” The demolition industry in India is currently pegged at about Rs 1,000 crore. With urban infrastructure set to boom across the country, the growth potential for the industry is huge. “But it needs to get a lot more organized first,” says Mohan Ramanathan. “Demolitions are all about bringing it down quickly, efficiently… and as quietly as possible. And you can’t do that unless you have the finest people and equipment around - like Volvo.”

As the vibro hammer already reached its maximum frequency, there is no question of passing a critical frequency. Disturbing vibrations during start-up and stop are eliminated. “The adjustment of the eccentric weights is completely automated. As manual (remote) control for shifting the eccentric weights is possible, the most ideal amplitude can be generated for each soil type,” informs Mr Mukherjee. It is not required to readjust the vibro hammer when stopped and re-started. The hammer will automatically select the last setting. With RF, it is possible to
maintain the hammer at its maximum frequency while bringing the eccentric moment to ‘0’. The hammer can be brought to standstill without causing any vibrations. According to Mr Mukherjee, “Resonance Free Vibro Hammers can work next to even dilapidated structures without causing any damage. better. If we look at the industry figures the heavy duty trucks market has already started growing for the last two months. On the other hand, demand from light duty and medium duty trucks is still going towards the bottom. However, we will see growth within the next six months. Mr Ramarao: With the new government in place we are quite excited. I think with the opening up of the economy, the infrastructure and mining sectors will get a big boost. We are already experiencing positive signals from our customers. We see good opportunity coming for Volvo trucks and similar products around the corner.
Are you witnessing similar optimism even in your order booking? Mr Ramarao: Yes, we are. This year, between January and May, Volvo Trucks

Do you have any expansion plan in pipeline? Mr Aggarwal: Volvo Trucks has one plant here in Bangalore with a capacity of assembling 2,000 units. As of now we do not have any plan for expanding capacity further. Mr Ramarao, with a conducive environment in place, what kind of sales strategy you have? Mr Ramarao: Our sales strategy has always been clear. We have a direct sales approach – our trucks are sold by our own people. We don’t work through independent dealers for Volvo Trucks in India – we run our own dealerships. We are placed very close to our customers and we put the products in place understanding their needs. Fuel Watch Volvo Trucks Fuel Watch competition is part of Volvo Trucks efforts to educate drivers, fleet managers, customers and other stakeholders on the importance of the good driving practices to improve fuel efficiency, reduce cost and increase profitability. has grown by more than 30 per cent. With stable government in place we believe decision making would be faster. It should help in terms of working on the long-term challenges like meeting power deficit and major infrastructure development. All these will give us a great opportunity.
What is your expectation? Mr Aggarwal: It is all related to the economy how the economy grows. In the current outlook, the economy is expected to witness 5.5 per cent to 6 per cent GDP growth in 2014 -15. However next year we should see real impacts of all the steps that the new government is going to take.

What is the volume you target this year? Mr Aggarwal: We see volumes getting better this year as many mining and infrastructure projects are expected to be operational again increasing the demand for specialised trucks. Mr Ramarao: We already have delivered more than 300 units in last five months i.e. between January and May. And, with the current optimism, we expect a substantial growth during the current fiscal.
When do you see the 1,000 sales mark crossing again? Mr Aggarwal: Let’s hope it should happen in two years time. In India, you have an assembly capacity of 2,000 units. By when you expect to reach your full capacity and go to the next level i.e. manufacturing? Mr Ramarao: It all depends on how quickly it goes, it is difficult to predict. We have the capacity to assemble 2,000 units in single shift operation. We can easily deliver more than 5,000 units with 3-shift operation. So I don’t think we need any further capacity addition. We just need the right environment to sell more trucks. Today, customers are definitely looking for high performance trucks – they don’t look at the initial purchase price they look at the overall lifecycle value.
Indian industry is dominated by low cost trucks how do you fare in this regard? Mr Aggarwal: We are in premium trucks segment through Volvo Trucks. In low cost segment, we participate with the mass market Eicher brand. We are one of the strong players with light-, heavy- and medium-duty trucks with a market share of 31.5 per cent. What are the features offer Volvo trucks precision with stability? Mr Ramarao: Volvo trucks come with state-of-the-art features. The new product platform that has been launched globally come with path breaking technology. Apart from driver’s comfort Volvo trucks come with some unique features like air suspension for construction applications and new dynamic steering. These innovative features give Volvo trucks precision and n stability. The Winners R Satyanarayana from BGR Mining & Infra Pvt. Ltd. was adjudged the winner. J Sampath Raju from SV Engineering Constructions was adjudged the 1st Runner-up and Sudharshan Dhal from Montecarlo Ltd. was adjudged the 2nd Runnerup.

AG has recently showcased the future of transportation with a representation of a leap in technology that would change the way the world trucks’ in future, at Magdeburg, Germany. Just over 30 km of autobahn, with interspersed open stretches, slow-moving traffic and a brokendown passenger car. So nothing special! On the contrary: there is a truck driver at the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, but something else exercises control in this situation: The “Highway Pilot”
drives the truck autonomously. The driver attends to other matters during the journey, and only intervenes when required. Tomorrow’s technology in a truck of today: driving on the autobahn in the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025.
“Highway Pilot” activated technology takes the wheel
–
The all-important message lights up immediately after starting off: “Highway Pilot available” says the display in the instrument cluster. Using the installed map and the markings on the 3.5-metre wide motorway lane, the technology
Technology
of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 has identified the vehicle’s position on the A14 autobahn near Magdeburg. The driver switches the system on, then takes his hands off the wheel – the display confirms with “Highway Pilot active”. Nothing exciting happens as the revolutionary mode change takes place. The semitrailer combination continues to travel at exactly the set speed, in the centre of the right-hand lane. Using the truck’s intelligent sensors and computing power, the steering carries out slight corrections by itself. The first impression: autonomous driving is amazingly unspectacular. The driver wants to relax in comfort, so he presses a button on the seat armrest: the driver’s seat immediately moves backwards, and pivots to the right by 45 degrees for a comfortable seating position. The driver is able to stretch his legs in comfort, as if sitting in an armchair at home. He is able to reach the steering wheel, but the brake pedal only by an artistic foot contortion. No matter, the Future Truck 2025 is not driverless, the “Highway Pilot” is now doing the driving.
Safely on the road with radar sensors, camera and V2V/ V2I communication The “Highway Pilot” is a combination of radar sensors at the front and sides, a stereo camera behind the windscreen, precise three-dimensional maps and V2V/V2I communication – which stands for Vehicle to Vehicle and Vehicle to Infrastructure – the exchange of information between the truck and other vehicles, and with the world outside the motorway. Tomorrow has already come in the Future Truck 2025, as the instruments already show: Instead of a conventional instrument cluster it has high-resolution, graphic colour display. On the left the display shows the fuel and AdBlue levels, as well as the engine speed, and on the right the driving time and social data. In the centre it shows the vehicle speed in precise digital form, and also in analogue form using a stylised dial instrument. When the “Highway Pilot” is activated, the information in the display is reduced to a minimum and all the data now appear on the screen of the tablet computer in the centre console. This is now the truck’s central control and communication instrument. The developers now no longer refer to the interface between the driver and truck as “instruments”, but as the Human Machine Interface or

stationary on the emergency lane, so the truck automatically moves left to the centreline and passes the brokendown vehicle while keeping a safety distance, as it also has its eye on the traffic in the left lane. After passing the obstacle, the truck returns to the righthand lane and accelerates back to its cruising speed.

Human Machine Interaction, or HMI for short. This is the centrepiece of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, and is presently still a disguised, near-series study.
Acknowledging assignments and reserving a parking space while on the move The semitrailer combination of the future is now moving smoothly with the traffic at a cruising speed of 85 km/h, always keeping the correct safety distance of 60 m from the vehicle ahead and staying precisely on course. The initial apprehension in the cockpit has now been allayed. Likewise the temptation to keep a constant eye on the traffic situation, so as to intervene at any time. This is not necessary. Even gusting cross-winds do not bring the truck off-track – the technology corrects its course more rapidly and safely than any human driver. The driver might now decide to compose an email or listen to music. Or attend to more important matters. For example use the tablet to acknowledge an assignment that has just come in by V2I communication, or take a look at the proposed route in navigation mode and choose a suitable service station for the next break. The menu for the day promptly appears on

the screen. So the driver can take the opportunity to pre-order the meal of his choice and reserve a parking space. Are there any friends or colleagues loggedin on the same route? Easy to find out, perhaps they can arrange to meet up for the next rest break.
The Future Truck 2025 pays attention and makes room The traffic of tomorrow will likewise have its share of unforeseen incidents and breakdowns, occasionally slow down and come to a stop, but the Future Truck 2025 smoothly adapts to the conditions. A message appears in the display: “Emergency vehicle approaching”. The information comes from a police car, by V2V communication. The communication between vehicles works perfectly, the truck automatically moves over to the right until it reaches the lane marking, clears the way for the fast-moving police car and then returns to the centre of its lane. Meanwhile the driver remains in his working position and merely observes the scene. And uses Skype to answer an enquiry from a colleague travelling well behind about the cause of the delay.Because the “Highway Pilot” is able to announce a brokendown vehicle ahead in advance. It is
Minutes later the display reports a slow-moving vehicle ahead. In autonomous mode the Future Truck 2025 would patiently follow the slowmover, as it never leaves its lane. But in this case overtaking is worthwhile, owing to the large difference in speeds. So the driver pivots the seat into the driving position, takes over manual control, indicates and changes lane to overtake. Returning to his lane, he can then hand control back to the “Highway Pilot”. Important note: The driver of the autonomous truck is always in full control, and can always override the technology by steering, braking or accelerating as required.
Plan the next tour while on the move There are more important things to do than manually keep pace in a convoy of trucks: the tablet reports another assignment, this time with a refrigerated semitrailer. Once again V2I communication comes into its own: an app is used to activate the trailer’s refrigeration unit directly from the tablet, and it is pre-cooled at exactly the right time. When the driver arrives to pick up the trailer, it will be at just the right temperature. But there is still time for a break beforehand: the vehicle is approaching the chosen service station. In good time the “Highway Pilot” announces the exit road on the tablet and display, then starts a countdown for the driver to take over the necessary manual control. A welcome break: the reserved parking space is available, and the pre-ordered meal is on the dining table in the service station right on time. All perfectly normal in the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck, and in 2025. n

urface International, a Jodhpur-based manufacturer of shot blasting and peening machines with global presence has introduced multi indexing hangertype shot peening machine. Shot peening is a process specifically designed to enhance the fatigue strength of components which are subject to high alternating stress. Surface treatment procedures like grinding, milling, bending or heat treatment procedures cause tensile residual stress. This tensile residual stress leads to low life cycles of the parts. Shot peening converts tensile residual stress into compressive residual stress which leads to significant increases in the life cycle of parts and their maximum load capacities. Multi indexing hanger type shot peening machine is especially suitable for automation of tractor industry for shot peening of big gears and gear shafts. BIM: smarter way for scaffolding and formwork Scaffolding and formwork have a significant impact on construction projects and hence must be designed in detail. With its better designs, BIM proves to be a smarter solution for the purpose.
S
caffolding and formwork have a significant impact on construction projects and hence must be designed in detail. The safety of labour largely depends on the scaffoldings being used at a site. The system therefore should be designed keeping the safety of workers in mind. At the same time, it should also be easy to erect and should not be over designed as it can pinch the contractors or owners pockets. The drafting of formwork systems for concrete structures is even more complex task than the design and selection of the formwork systems. The 2D Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) is the most commonly used tool for drafting along with addins for the 2D CADD software so as to reduce the amount of time and complexity in drafting the formwork systems.

“At times, more sophisticated 3D CADD is preferred, 2D technique suffers on the fact that it cannot incorporate the actual site characteristics such as the concrete shape, alignment of the formwork and construction sequence of the formwork, which are the detrimental factors in the formwork construction,” says Mudit Raniwala, CEO, Formworks, Technocraft Industries (I) Ltd. Using Building Information Modelling (BIM) proves to be a satisfying solution. BIM is simply a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. It involves creating and using an intelligent 3D model to inform and communicate project decisions.
Why BIM? BIM’s main feature that makes it desirable is its ability to automatically coordinate between drawings and details from a

given as hand-outs to the foreman to erect the formwork in the field.” However, formwork layout has traditionally been a 2D process, field situations are often overlooked, inadequately accounted for, resulting in stripping and redoing of the formwork.

model eliminates errors and improves the accuracy. “As the design and construction documentation are dynamically linked, the time needed to evaluate more alternatives, execute design changes, and produce construction documentation is reduced significantly,” points out Shekhar Banerjee, Marketing Director, Dhruva Scaffoldings. Nirmalya Chatterjee, COO and Business Director, Tekla India Pvt. Ltd., says, “BIM helps to automate the formwork layout that saves the field crew time by eliminating the need to layout formwork for every wall in the building manually. The layout drawings are then

Considering their significant impact on construction projects, scaffolding as part of the temporary facilities category in construction must be thoroughly designed, planned, procured, and managed. The current practices in planning and managing scaffolding though is often manual and reactive, especially when a construction project is already underway. “BIM technology can be used for modelling all the scaffold and formwork for whole buildings, offering a better level of planned occupational health and safety (OHS), edge protection and equipment fall protection to contractors prior to site commencement,” says Anand Sirohi, Head-Engineering, Natural Resources and Infrastructure (ENI), Autodesk India & SAARC. “It can be really helpful for the contractors as they can validate site planning for council, suggest most efficient site egresses and guide internal safety management processes. It also assists in quantity planning for scaffold and formwork requirements on both small and large projects.”
Uses of BIM Use of BIM actually goes beyond the planning and design phase of the project, extending throughout the building lifecycle, supporting processes including cost management, construction management, project management and facility operation. BIM helps a lot in formwork and scaffolding modelling and also automates many processes intelligently, some of which are: • GA drawings/erection plans/layout drawings/3D views • Create shop drawings • Single parts drawings • Formwork bill of materials • Feed CNC files to workshop.
Having the bill of materials being generated through the systems helps us avoid the painstaking activity of drafting the entire layout before getting the material list.
Mudit Raniwala, CEO, Formworks, Technocraft Industries (I) Ltd.
Current styles of design and planning Formwork for concrete has to be designed to support all applied vertical and lateral loads until these loads can be carried by the concrete structure itself. In general, formwork system consists of sheathing to retain concrete and supporting members necessary to hold the sheathing firmly in place. Members which support sheathing directly are referred as studs in vertical formwork and joists in horizontal formwork. Vertical loads include weight of reinforced concrete, weight of forms, and live loads imposed during construction due to material storage, workmen, and equipment. Lateral loads include lateral concrete pressure, wind loads, and impact loads due to starting and stopping of equipment. A scaffolding system-loaded BIM model can be utilised in communication, billing of materials, scheduling simulation, and as a benchmark for accurate field installation and performance measurement. However, it is useful to see what types of designs and planning are being implemented by current players in industry. July 2014

information from the Tekla structures model.” Mr Raniwala adds, “We use BIM extensively in design of our formwork systems too. The layout of concrete formwork systems is the most important factor to be considered in the formwork construction besides even the design and selection of the formwork systems.”

“A rule-based system that automatically plans scaffolding systems for pro-active management in BIM proves to be very helpful. A rule can be prepared based on the current practice of planning and installing scaffolding systems,” suggests Mr Sirohi. “The corresponding computational algorithms operating in a BIM environment will have the capability of automatically recognising geometric and non-geometric conditions in building models and produce a scaffolding system design which a practitioner can use in the field.” Talking about the same rule-based system Mr Raniwala informs, “For our scaffolding products at Technocraft, we have developed a rule-based system that automatically plans scaffolding systems for management in BIM. However, the scope of this system is limited to traditional pipe and board scaffolding systems. Having the bill of materials being generated through the systems helps us avoid the painstaking activity of drafting the entire layout before getting the material list.” Technocraft Industries caters to the scaffolding requirements in construction as well as industrial or oil and gas sectors. It also makes designs and manufacture formwork systems for building and infrastructure projects. Mr Chatterjee says, “By generating the formwork in 3D, complex issues and project specific issues are easily identified and assessed at an early stage which in turn avoids rework related to formwork erection. Formwork panels are prefabricated on site based on the

Earlier, the formwork components and its associated accessories were first drawn and then connected to form the finished formwork systems. However, this was time-consuming, thus later, the pre-drawn CAD elements known as Blocks/Templates were developed to draw the commonly used formwork systems. These blocks/templates are used as a separate or as add-ins for the 2D CADD software so as to reduce the amount of time in the drafting the formwork systems and its layout. Mr Banerjee says, “Design, visualisation, simulation, and collaboration enabled by Autodesk BIM solutions provide greater clarity for all stakeholders across the project lifecycle. BIM makes it easier to achieve project and business goals.” Technocraft uses 3D modelling extensively in design of the formwork to suit the shape in its infrastructure projects. The 3D CADD is efficient in providing an optimum solution but it is not impartible, means the changes made on it cannot be altered easily so as to coordinate with other construction elements involved in the project. Thus, there arises a need for an intriguing tool

for enhancing the parametric change characteristics besides the perfect layout of the system. “The BIM is one such technique that is adopted in our projects to overcome the shortcoming of the 3D CADD. This comprises of creating 3D BIM of the concrete structure like pier cap of flyovers and converting it into a wire-frame model and set as reference,” believes Mr Raniwala.
Bottom line In summary, the most immediate benefits of BIM for formwork design are better designs and increased efficiency and productivity. Certainly, the way BIM is making its significance and importance felt, will open more doors n for BIM applications in future. Pier Cap

major worldwide airports. This includes using formwork, falsework and shoring from RMD Kwikform for concrete construction. The company offers an ideal mix of international expertise in airport construction with local support. It operates from Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi offices and has branch operations to support the entire country. Commenting on this capability, Arul Raja, Managing Director, RMD Kwikform India says, “We have worked with the Indian construction industry for 3 years offering both engineering support and
equipment to help solve the challenges on numerous projects. This expertise is easily transferable to the aviation sector so that customers can gain the cost and time benefits of working with formwork and falsework.” He adds, “We take real pride in understanding every project and work with the customer to develop the right solutions through our engineer and design teams, supplying technical drawings. From there we support the customer right through to completion, with on site assistance from technicians to provide practical and effective support.” 46

“Adding to this local expertise and support is all of the resource and experience that we bring from operating as a global company for over 65 years. It means that we have extensive experience of construction projects across many sectors in India plus specific international experience of airport construction,” Mr Raja continues. There are numerous good examples of RMD Kwikform’s expertise in airport construction from around the world including Muscat International and Salalah airports in Oman and Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Salalah Airport For Salalah Airport, contractors Larsen & Toubro approached RMD Kwikform to provide a shoring solution to support the construction of the terminal building and ancillary buildings. The company has supplied shoring for more than 40,000 sq.m. on rental basis for this large-scale project, which demanded an incredibly high level of efficiency and communication. This proved particularly important to meet the first deadline for the passenger terminal building. James D’Souza from Larsen & Toubro said, “We were faced with the challenge of Muscat Airport Control Tower, Oman
Salalah airport distance
casting the first level of the passenger terminal building in just six months.” The structure for the passenger terminal building had numerous one metre high plinth beams, which the contractors didn’t have enough time to backfill to start shoring. Spanning the Alshor frames over the plinth beams saved time for the contractor without having to use additional equipment and therefore solved the problem.
Muscat International Airport For Muscat International Airport, contractors Carillion Alawi used RMD Kwikform’s self-climbing formwork system, Trulift, on the 100-metre tall Air Traffic Control tower. A fast and safe solution was needed to enable the contractors to meet their deadlines. Trulift was ideal since it requires a minimal number of components to ensure quick and easy assembly while maximising construction cycle times.
Abu Dhabi International Airport The construction of the new Abu Dhabi International mid-field terminal building really demonstrates RMD Kwikform’s design and technical expertise with the design of specialist jacking equipment mounted on Megashor towers. International contractor China State Construction used the system to help

erect the huge steel frame structure for the building. The structure curves in both the horizontal and vertical axis and needs millimetre accuracy for the installation of specially fabricated arches and a central girder. The RMD Kwikform engineering team used 3D modelling to design the special jacking frame, with each piece of the three-section design aimed at making the adjustments necessary to reach the precise accuracy needed. Commenting on the project, Zhi Lai, construction Manager from China State Construction said, “The solution gave us more available working space onsite and also reduced the hire costs of the equipment.” For large infrastructure projects such as the construction or expansion of an airport, the benefits of working with RMD Kwikform’s engineering and site assistance teams cannot be underestimated. As part of a total equipment solution, they provide innovative solutions that save customers time and money. n

Saicon offers portable UPVC window welding machine Saicon has come up with a solution which is suitable for both corner welding as well as V welding
E
stablished in 2005, Saicon has developed into one of the India’s leading UPVC windows and doors related product manufacturers and suppliers, specialising in UPVC window manufacturing machines. In order to meet the growing requirements of market, it has always been experimenting to present some innovative products and now they have come up with portable UPVC window welding machine.
Portable UPVC window welding machine The portable UPVC window and door welding machine which is available for both corner welding as well as V welding. Being developed by Saicon, a Kolkata based company; the product is being manufactured in India. According to the company, the product is very light in weight as compared to other UPVC welding machines available globally by Chinese, Turkish or German suppliers. The company claims that the machines available globally weighs almost 300 kgs, whereas the Saicon portable UPVC welding machine weighs only 21.5 kgs. This offers a big advantage that it can be easily taken to the site for work if the factory is far away from the site to reduce transportation cost. The machine also works in 220 V single phase which is generally available everywhere. One more benefit it offers is its reduced welding time. It takes only 10 seconds to weld each corner of the UPVC frame whereas the other machines require a minimum time of 30 seconds to weld each corner.

However, the company assures that being faster and lighter also, it does not compromise with the quality of the product. It also becomes a very essential machine when the size of the window or door is too big to lift it at site, then the profile can be welded on the spot at the site using this machine. Saicon initially developed fully portable UPVC window manufacturing machines in India. Till date UPVC window making machines used to be very expensive and required factory setups to manufacture the windows. However the new light-weight range manufactured by Saicon gets tested in laboratories to pass all the necessary strength and quality tests. The company offers services for fully portable UPVC window and door manufacturing plants. It has already sold 900 machines in 3.5 years out of which 150 have been sold in India only. It is exporting the
product to 40 countries globally as well. In fact Saicon not only supplies fabrication machinery, but also provides holistic training and after sales support to the prospective fabricators, the company backs its offerings with comprehensive warranties. Saicon also specialises in innovative products like high quality coloured UPVC windows and doors. Traditionally only white colour has been used for UPVC windows, however the company has brought 12 beautiful shades for its clients to choose from. Thus it believes that it offers its clients complete windows and doors solutions from imagination to satisfaction. n Contact:

Fasteners
PROFILE
Unbrako fasteners now available in stainless steel Unbrako fasteners known for quality, safety and innovation for over 100 years, are now also available in austenitic stainless steel – 304 and 316 However, if an application calls for a material with corrosion resistant properties better than that of SS304, SS316 is the logical candidate. The 2-3 per cent molybdenum provides improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistant properties, especially in environments containing chlorides. Unbrako SS316 fasteners find their applications in pulp and paper mills and water treatment plants. They are also used in phosphoric and acetic acids.
Unbrako fasteners are now into stainless
steel. These are considered to be ideal for corrosive, magnetic, hygienic, cryogenic or elevated temperature environments. Unbrako stainless screws offer good resistance to rust and corrosion from acids, organic substances, salt solutions and atmospheres. Its notable properties include retention of a high percentage of tensile strength and good creep resistance up to 800 F, without scaling or oxidation. A complete range of Unbrako stainless steel fasteners including socket head screws, hex head screws and nuts, washers (plain and spring), threaded rod and socket set screws are now available in A2-70, A4-70 and A4-80.
Why stainless steel? Why Unbrako? Today, with labour costs at record levels and going up, greater consideration at the design level is being given to the reduction, or even elimination of maintenance. The cost of removing rusty bolts and replacing them with

the new ones is more expensive than using corrosion resistant fasteners to begin with. Other costs resulting from fastener failure, such as downtime and lost production, make an even stronger case for stainless steel fasteners. Unbrako stainless steel fasteners, available in SS304 and SS316, offer excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of environments, especially in low chloride waters (less than 2000 ppm chlorides). Additionally, they are nobler (cathodic) than the structural members they join, and are therefore protected by them. Unbrako SS304 fasteners are used in many applications. They are virtually immune to foodstuffs, sterilising solutions, most organic chemicals and dyestuffs, and a wide variety of inorganic chemicals. They are thus useful in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and electronic chip industries, as they maintain product purity, with the minimum contamination.
Unbrako stainless steel fasteners do not require any form of protective coating. This stainless characteristic makes them suitable for many architectural applications and atmospheric (indoor and outdoor) services.
Performance at high temperatures At elevated temperatures creep occurs leading to reduction in stress, which means bolts are unable to maintain a tight joint. Unbrako stainless steel fasteners show retention of a high percentage of tensile strength and good creep resistance up to 800 F (without scaling or oxidation). Performance at low temperatures Unbrako stainless steel fasteners show quality performance even at low temperatures. They are essentially useful in cryogenic applications like Liquid Nitrogen Gas (LNG) processing, especially SS304, because it does not become brittle as it is chilled. It not only remains tough and ductile at LNG temperature (-) 260F, but also retains excellent properties with liquid hydrogen at (-) 423F and liquid helium at (-) 452F. n For more details visit www.unbrako.com

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES
Flooring is one of the most important applications for epoxies and today many fields are experiencing the use of epoxy floor coatings. The article analyses overall need and performance of the same. Image: Mathur Corr Tech Pvt. Ltd.
Epoxy coating: a unique solution for flooring E
poxy floor coatings play a major role in meeting the standards required for high quality flooring, especially in public buildings like hospitals or food processing plants, where hygienic floors are of the utmost importance. Epoxy floor coatings are durable hard wearing solutions for both commercial and industrial floorings. These can be applied over concrete floors to provide a high performing film, both aesthetically and functionally.
It’s different The conventional floorings that are available include tiles, stones, and vitrified etc. However, epoxy floors are found to be unique from them for the following reasons: • Unlike tiles and stones, the epoxy floorings are joint free leading to a

surface which has no potential for dirt pick like in case of the joints in tiles • Epoxy floors other than polyurethanes are the only floors on which forklifts can easily move • One can provide any colour that is desired by the client and if the client wishes to change the colour after some time, it can be done with a simple flash coat. “The epoxies have become part of the drawing in industrial constructions. The coatings are easily repairable at the localised level. The labour has become very expensive in our country,” points out Amit Mathur, Director, Mathur Corr Tech Pvt. Ltd. “A team of 6 persons can hand over an extent of nearly 3,000 sq. ft in a day’s time that makes the labour cost very inexpensive. The epoxies bring a world-class looks and

appearance to the industry which actually has been mandatory in the first world.” “Epoxy floorings are formulated by various polymers, hardeners and graded filler. They can lengthen the life of the floor and achieve a great appearance. They can be applied over many different materials, including steel, concrete, and wood. However, concrete is the best surface,” says Hasan Rizvi, Vice President , STP Ltd. V Raghunathan, Vice President, Cerachem Pvt. Ltd. shares, “Using an epoxy floor coating over the concrete floors will create a durable, high gloss, hard wearing surface. They stay intact for a long period of time and are widely used due to the inherent tough nature of the film to withstand operating pay loads if the loads are not pointed ones.”
Advantages Epoxy floor coatings offer a number of benefits and advantages. The following are some of the main advantages associated in choosing an epoxy floor coating for commercial or industrial purpose. • Chemically inert nature: Epoxy floor coatings are chemically resistant flooring option for manufacturing plants, warehouses, garages, and industrial plants and commercial establishments • Environment friendly: Epoxy floor coatings are an environment friendly flooring solution for corporates interested in choosing “green” alternatives and building materials as the coatings become plastic and inert for chemical exodus • Self-levelling, easy and quick to apply: Epoxy floor coatings are selflevelling products which allow any experienced professionals to apply the coatings with ease. Self-levelling overlay system itself offers numerous advantages. It can correct uneven floors, repair damaged concrete, and provide a smooth and durable new surface for decorative requirements. • Style: Epoxy floor coatings offer an excellent gloss and sheen and are available in a variety of colours and styles. One can chose to use one solid colour or create a decorative pattern using several colours in order to create an attractive and durable flooring solution.
Using an epoxy floor coating over the concrete floors will create a durable, high gloss, hard wearing surface.
V Raghunathan, Vice President, Cera-chem Pvt. Ltd.
Safety + Economy + Productivity Epoxy floor coating products can improve safety by creating a slip, impact, heat, and fire resistant flooring solution. These high gloss floor coatings can also improve brightness in a work area by 300 per cent. Also it is possible to use different colours of epoxy floor coatings simultaneously to define safety zones, forklift traffic zones, and other work zones. Its application cost is also affordable and no maintenance is required for long run which helps on ROI front. Thus it proves to be a cost effective flooring
However, epoxy floor coating performance is directly affected by surface preparation. “The integrity and the service life will be reduced significantly if the surface is improperly prepared. A proper surface preparation ensures epoxy coating adhesion to the substrate and prolongs the life of the epoxy coating system,” adds Mr Rizvi.

solution. Further it can be applied over any new or old concrete floors.
where epoxy floor coatings are being widely used.
Moreover, productivity could be greatly enhanced by using epoxy floor coatings in a factory, warehouse, or industrial plant. Because it can reduce wear on transport vehicles, allows faster material movement, and prevents wear and damage to the floor.
Moreover, today they are considered to be suitable for a variety of applications like computer rooms, hotel and restaurant kitchens, hospitals, sports facilities and gyms, shopping malls, cinema halls, galleries and lobbies, etc.
Choice of epoxy floor coating Now the obvious question arises is how to choose the best epoxy floor coating for the required purpose.
Solutions offered today Taking into consideration all the benefits and probable application areas of epoxy floor coatings, it is now useful to see what solutions are being offered today in the industry.
Mr Mathur helps to understand, “The choice of system depends primarily on the service requirement of the industry. Epoxies are basically chosen on the basis of two parameters: physical and chemical.” Physical aspect would be terms of usage of the floor being coated. Based on these aspects, one can choose the film thickness ranging from 250 microns to 6 mm dry film thickness. Whereas chemical aspect depends on the application industry in which floor would be used. Different industries, such as chemical, computer, oil etc need different type of coating. So keeping this in mind, suitable grade of epoxy should be implemented. Mr Raghunathan suggests using the following checklist for the purpose: • Whether the product has good film built up? • Has it a good self levelling? • On what primer it is recommended? • Is the primer a screed and what thickness does it offer?
Applications Epoxy floor coating products, once dried, become durable, seamless surfaces that can easily be wiped free of dirt, dust, and debris. Because of this ability for easy cleaning, these are ideal for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical as well for the packaging plants. Additionally, in OEM plants, commercial facilities, warehouses, chemical plants ad laboratories are some more areas

he reason for the extensive use of hot dip galvanising is the two-fold nature of the coating. As a barrier coating, it provides a tough, metallurgically bonded zinc coating, which completely covers the steel surface and seals the same from the corrosive action of the environment. Additionally sacrificial action of zinc protects steel even where damage or minor discontinuity occurs in the coating.
How zinc corrosion

Zinc forms a metallurgical bond with mild steel. Zinc coating has good impact and abrasion resistance. Zinc spray offers corner and edge protection. Zinc metal spray offers satisfactory corrosion performance in sea water and salt spray testing an in saline atmosphere. For damaged galvanising, corroded and welded galvanised surfaces, cold galvanising by Zinc metal spray is an ideal cure. This quick drying, high solids coating provides good protection to steel and ferrous metals against harsh corrosive environments. Zinc metal spray is an acrylated epoxy solvent deposited coating which fuses to metal substrates to guard against corrosion. This coating constantly fights against rust and corrosion. It is highly resistant to salt water corrosion, does not sag and may be top-coated with conventional primers, paints and epoxies. Cold galvanising spray provides the protection of hot-dip galvanising plus the convenience of on the job aerosol application.

Soccer stadiums and infrastructure and urban projects count on inorganic pigments from LANXESS
Brazil wears Bayferrox L
ANXESS inorganic pigments have brought beauty and sustainability to sports arenas, popular landmarks and urban infrastructure such as streets, sidewalks and plazas all over the world for decades. In Brazil, the specialty chemicals company is part of the game as well: more than 120 metric tons of inorganic pigments, marketed under the brands Bayferrox and Colortherm, can be found there in architectural and infrastructure projects, bringing colour to the world’s biggest soccer event. One example is the Arena das Dunas in Natal City on the coast of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. The yellow and brown LANXESS pigments Bayferrox 918LO, Bayferrox 601 and Bayferrox 975M were used in the coloured concrete pavers surrounding the stadium that give it such a bright and friendly atmosphere. Another example is the Pantanal Arena, located in Cuiabá, a town with around 550,000 inhabitants. The

population of Brazil calls this the “green city” because it is in the north of one of Brazil’s most important ecosystems (the so called Pantanal) and has a high proportion of green areas. In designing the new multi-functional sports arena, the planners therefore implemented an environmentally friendly concept. This includes the recycling of the rubble generated and the use of construction timber from sustainable sources. The sustainably produced yellow pigment Bayferrox 921 fit this concept perfectly. The concrete slabs in warm and friendly yellow shade are an attractive feature of the stadium’s forecourt and help the arena fit in harmoniously with its natural environment. LANXESS’s inorganic pigments bring colour to otherwise drab concrete and also have excellent light, weather and chemical resistance. “Another great advantage of using through-coloured concrete is the low maintenance cost over a long period of time,” explains Dr. Hans-Peter Baldus, head of the
Inorganic Pigments (IPG) business unit in the Americas region. The use of a conventional paint would not have been appropriate due to the Brazilian climate, with its hot sun, heavy rain and high moisture, and would have necessitated extensive maintenance over time. Besides being present in stadiums such as Arenas das Dunas, Pantanal, Maracanã and Mineirão, Bayferrox also brings color to several urban projects in Brazil. For example, Bayferrox brightens up the new Luiz Gonzaga Museum, which is in the Cais do Sertão tourist complex in the state of Pernambucoin Northeast Brazil. Architects Marcelo Ferraz and Francisco Fanucci, responsible for the project chose the LANXESS pigment Bayferrox 975M to colour the concrete because it best matched the original ocher shade of Sertão’s sandstone. “We wanted a material that represents the sandstone of the region and that contrasts with the white lacy latticework that covers parts of the facade,” says Ferraz. n

that promotes standardisation developments worldwide. The ISO employs a quality management standard that applies to the procedures that create and manage the products and services offered by an organisation. The ISO has laid out a series of standards to establish accepted practices, technical requirements, and terminologies for products, services and systems that, when adopted by a company, ensures clients, suppliers and end-product users of a universal level of quality for that particular area of certification. The standards are
designed to ensure the most effective, safe and efficient methods and products possible. Individual countries generally have their own national standards certifying bodies with accreditation for auditing and certifying companies and institutions according to the ISO standards. Information on how to get ISO certified is available through literature provided by these certifying bodies, or directly from the ISO. include not only improved efficiency in operations, but also international recognition. The companies certified for a particular standard may display the ISO logo with the proper standard number, to publicise compliance, on their labels, posters and other media.
Procurement guidelines under ISO 14344:2010 Now as for other industries, there have been set procurement guidelines for welding consumables also. ISO 14344:2010 specifies tools for communication between a purchaser and a supplier of welding consumables within quality systems, such as those based upon ISO 9001. “In production, the components of welding consumables are divided into discrete, predetermined quantities so that satisfactory tests with a sample from that quantity will establish that the entire quantity meets specification requirements,” says Rashmiranjan Mohapatra, National Sales Manager, KEMPPI INDIA. “These quantities,
known by such terms as heats, lots, blends, batches and mixes, vary in size according to the manufacturer. In practice, for identification purposes, each manufacturer assigns a unique designation to each quantity. This designation usually consists of a series of numbers or letters, or combinations thereof. This data enables the manufacturer to determine the date and time (or shift) of manufacture, the type and source of the raw materials used, and the details of the procedures used in producing the welding consumable. “The designation assigned by the manufacturer stays with the welding consumable and can be used to identify the material later, in those cases in which identification is necessary,” adds Mr Mohapatra.
The actual method ISO 14344:2010, together with an applicable International Standard or other standard for welding
consumables, provides a method for preparing those specific details needed for welding consumable procurement which consists of: • The welding consumable classification (selected from the applicable International Standard or other standard for welding consumables) • Lot classification • Testing schedule. Selection of the specific welding consumable classification, lot classification, and testing schedule depends up on the requirements of the application for which the welding consumable is being procured. However, ISO 14344:2010 does not apply to non-consumable electrodes or shielding gases. Thus it is clear that these procurement guidelines need to be followed by the professionals in the welding industry to ensure quality of their products as well as get recognition on global platform for business n development.

Polysoude presents TIGer bicathode technology Zero defects and surprisingly efficient operation: Polysoude makes it possible with its TIGer bicathode technology
T
oday engineering companies, contractors, pipe manufacturers, etc. agree that the GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) process and its variants (CMT, STT, cold arc, etc.) have almost reached their limits in terms of productivity and in particular quality.
However, with GMAW, achieving zero defects is very difficult, but not impossible, believes Polysoude. Most players in the field of offshore oil and gas exploration concerned agree that within the next 3-4 years, the unavoidable combined request for mechanical resistance/fatigue and corrosion resistance will lead to zero defects (zero lack of fusion and zero porosity). Concerning the TIG process, zero defects is considered normal, but up to now, the issues of productivity and efficiency have subsisted. Polysoude, has constantly been working on improved technology solutions, and now it has launched its latest development in the TIGer bicathode technology. This involves the
juxtaposition of two TIG arcs and thus allows for considerable improvement and efficiency of the process. The optimisation of the layer thickness leads to significant savings, while the optimised welding speeds go approximately 3 times faster than the conventional TIG Hot Wire technology. In all cases and whatever the pass thickness is chosen, complete control over dilution is provided with a rate of 1.5 to 2 per cent after the second layer deposited. After showcasing the product for the first time in an exhibition in Germany, Polysoude is planning to organise live demonstrations and cladding tests on samples from potentially interested companies as n well.

Ador presents KINGBOND: a value for money product Ador Welding Ltd. understands the applications demanding various requirements and combines such conflicting requirements into one single electrode to come up with KINGBOND
Ador Welding Limited provides service to
Indian industry as well as the global market with the range of welding consumables and equipment. The company takes care of customer satisfaction via its state-ofthe-art manufacturing plants and its comprehensive sales and distribution network. Most of the traditional electrodes available are meant for specific applications. However, there is the need to choose correct type of electrodes depending on the application. Some examples are: • If welding with AC power source is good, then there is no low OCV performance • When good weld bead finish is obtained, then smooth vertical down welding cannot be done • When there is welder’s appeal, then there is no weld toughness • If there is good slag detachability, then the spatter loss is high. Hence, keeping in the mind the need to combine many of the above conflicting requirements into one single electrode, Adore has designed its new product ‘KINGBOND - King of E 6013 Electrodes’, as they call.

Special features Kingbond can be operated on AC, DCEP, DCEN i.e. on transformer, rectifier and generator. It can also be operated at voltage as low as 55 V OCV, hence even local transformers can be used. With very smooth arc, the metal transfer across the arc is smooth. This results in least spatter – more deposit and less work to remove spatter, thus higher value for money. Due to soft arc, poor fit up of edges can be easily managed even in light sheet metals without any defects like burn through, undercuts etc. As the arc is very stable, the skill required for the welder is low. Fast freezing slag enables easy vertical down welding. The cup depth is less compared to most of the electrodes in this class and this makes the arc re-striking much easier by short circuit mode. This also makes repeated welding of small beads or spot welds easier. It has good self peeling slag and less trouble with de-slagging resulting in higher productivity and better quality weld. The weld bead obtained is fine rippled and smooth and does
not require an extra surface dressing. It is a low fume emitting electrode. The coating is designed to take higher currents without electrode losing its properties, even with higher currents, welding can be done till the end of the electrode, without any weld defects. The result is a weld which passes X ray test and gets a weld metal with toughness even at 0 C.
Quality and applications The high quality of Kingbond is approved and certified by BIS with IS 814 – ER4211X classification. The application areas involve general fabrication of mild structural steels like IS 2062, 226, ASTM SA 283 etc., light construction works, storage tanks, shipbuilding, sheet metal work, furniture, automobile bodies, pipes, machine frames, truck bodies, construction equipment and railway coach panels. Kingbond electrodes can be used with any welding equipment, using welder of any skill level, in any welding position and in any application involving C-Mn steel of 25mm (max) thickness to deposit welds that meets radiographic n quality and toughness up to 0 C.

anchsheel Fasteners is mainly in manufacturing High Strength Structural Fasteners (HSFG) conforming to IS, ASTM and now it has developed manufacturing fasteners conforming to EN-14399 standard. It offers its standard product in set of bolt, nut and washer assembly, in both systems i.e. HR and HV. In HR system, the thread length of the bolt varies with the total length of the bolt, the nut height is more and the product is available in the grades 8.8/8 as well as 10.9/10. While in HV system, the thread length of the bolt is fixed irrespective of the total length of the bolt, nut height is small and product

experts or structural engineer. Panchsheel offers the product from M12 to M36 and the length from 35 mm to 200 mm. As a special case it can also manufacture M42, M45 and M 52 dia. bolts having length 125 mm to 500 mm. in 8.8 or 10.9 grades. The company has chosen the quality high grade alloy steel to manufacture the bolts and high grade carbon steel to manufacture the nuts and washers. It also uses some special lubricants for nut threads. Panchsheel offers the product in natural finish or in hot dip galvanised finish or as per the customer’s requirement. The coating process is carried out according to the need of the standard at its works and is under control of the company’s experienced technicians, assures the company. A tightening test is conducted at the company’s laboratory to verify the suitability of high strength bolt/ nut/washer assemblies for preloaded connection in steel structures. A test is carried out to check the behaviour of the fastener assembly so as to ensure that the required preload can be reliably obtained by the tightening methods with sufficient margins against over tightening and against failure. The company has installed all the necessary inspection and test equipment to check the dimensional parameters, thread profiles, mechanical properties and metallurgical parameters. Recently the company has purchased an induced load measuring machine. In addition,
it is also planning to buy equipment measuring the torque and angle of nut rotation which is core requirement for the fasteners conforming to EN-14399. The specialty of these fasteners is they are tested for induced load developed within the bolt at specified torque and the rotation of the nut. In other words this measures the loss of torque during the tightening. This loss is due to friction between nut face and washer face, and friction between bolt threads and nut threads. This ensures the proper installation of the bolt. The product finds its applications mainly for the wind mill structures, heavy civil structures and bridges. Panchsheel manufactures and supplies bolts, screws, studs, nuts, lock nuts, washers, direct tension indicating washers, foundation bolts and components as per the customers drawing and specifications. It also manufactures the fasteners as per IS, ISO, BS, DIN, EN, ASTM and SAE standards, or as per customer’s specifications. The company believes its core strength is manufacturing and testing fasteners. Its plant is capable to produce 500 MT/month of fasteners with latest manufacturing technologies and testing facilities. n Contact:
