Fuel efficient machines make road building economical
Fuel efficient road building equipment, with their unique advantages, are now finding their use on large scale in many applications. This article talks about the same and how the present players are trying to make most out of it
I
n construction of roads, various road building equipment play a major role. However, owing to increasing operational and maintenance costs, today the need has arisen to use fuel efficient road building equipment on large extent in many applications. However, what exactly do they offer and are they really that much worth? B2B Purchase analyses the same.
New technologies There are definitely some benefits of adoption of technology such as improved accuracy in grading, decrease in labour costs and rework significantly, and improvement in operator performance.

In 2011, Volvo Construction Equipment India introduced a new series of compactor in the 10-tonne category segment, soil compactor and double drum asphalt compactor that are equipped with fuel-efficient engines. Around the same time, a need arose for tier 3 engines for all the wheeled equipment. “When we went for tier 3, we brought in fuel efficient engines for soil compactor and then for double drum compactor too. We have also introduced pavers with fuel efficient engines, says A M Muralidharan, President, Volvo Construction Equipment India.
The fuel efficiency of our machines is mainly because of the design of the engines A M Muralidharan, President, Volvo Construction Equipment India

Managing Director, Case India, says, “Recently we launched the brand new EX Series backhoe loaders in India- the 770 EX, 770 EX Magnum and the 851 EX. All three models feature a proven proprietary engine. The fiat engine S8000, which stands out for its fuel efficiency and performance, features an air aftercooler system that increases the density of the intake air, improving efficiency and decreasing fuel consumption. This engine has been delivering better fuel efficiency than expected.”
Fuel savings Case India believes that much fuel saving is possible with the use of fuel efficient equipment. The new Case EX series backhoe loaders equipped with fiat S8000 engine, deliver the powerful performance and fast response time coupled with a 5 per cent higher productivity and fuel savings of up to 13 per cent. The new graders feature an FPT Industrial 6.7 litre engine with triple horsepower ranges on the 865B model and dual horsepower on the 845B to match the power requirements of various applications and deliver outstanding fuel efficiency. The new Case 752 tandem compactor with water cooled engine,
Kleemann EVO range of Screen
results in a substantial temperature reduction, which benefits customers with the engine’s longer life and lower fuel consumption. Whereas, according to Volvo, who has increased the weight of its machines in order to increase the overall productivity, around 5-7 per cent more fuel saving is achieved than earlier by using these equipment.
Operational efficiency Now the question arises is that do these fuel efficient road building equipment perform at the cost of operational efficiency? The views are interesting.
We have used technologies to make sure that we provide the quality product with operational efficiency Abhijit Gupta, MD, Case India
“The fuel efficiency of our machines is mainly because of the design of the engines. The engines are designed in a way to give additional power even at lower RPM without compromising on the operational efficiency. We have also changed other connected components like axle systems of hydraulics and transmission among others,” informs Mr Muralidharan.

Ajay Shankar, Country Manager, Caterpillar India, also assures that operational efficiency doesn’t get affected using fuel efficient equipment. “Fuel efficiency gains come in the form of less possible rework and less time taken to achieve the desired level or road camber. For example, the 2D Cat cross slope system on a motor grader allows an operator to input desired road camber slope, say 2.5 per cent, in the in cab control box which will ensure the blade will maintain that slope automatically based on operators input. By doing this you are effectively reducing the grade checker to check whether they have achieved the desired grade and eliminating possible rework,” says Mr Shankar.
for compaction of soil, Case India uses anti-vibration mountings to isolate the vibrations from rest of the machine. To keep the operator in vibration free mode, it has adopted elevated operating platforms, which are separated by secondary anti-vibration pads from the Chassis of the machine.
In general, the noise and vibration levels are high in a diesel engine during its operation. These vibrations and noise depends on various parameters.
New fuel efficient equipment Wirtgen has a variety of fuel efficient equipment under its belt. New generation of Wirtgen cold milling machines, cold recyclers, Vogele Dash3 generation of pavers and also EVO range of Kleemann crushers and screening plants are some of its fuel efficient equipment.
“We have used technologies to make sure that we provide the quality product with operational efficiency,” says Mr Gupta. “To minimise the noise level and vibrations, our equipment engines are fitted with turbochargers and perfect fuel injection timing and optimum operating temperatures. All hydraulic components are smooth and low noise components as these are filled with hydraulic oil and the oil will be used as the lubricant during the function.” As the purpose of the compactor is to produce vibration near the drums
Apart from making the equipment fuel efficient, Case India has also worked on improving operator comfort aimed at improving operator’s efficiency. For both soil compactor as well as tandem compactor, it has isolated the operator cabin from the vibrations which are integral to any compactor to make it more comfortable for operators.
Whereas Volvo has products like SD110 – 10-tonne soil compactor and DD100 – double drum 10-tonne asphalt compactor. It also has pavers for paving 5.5 metres width of the road.
Fuel efficiency gains come in the form of less possible rework and less time taken to achieve the desired level or road camber Ajay Shankar, Country Manager, Caterpillar India
Case India claims its Case Motor Grader Model 845 B and Case Model 865 B are one of the most advanced innovative products in their particular segment. Also Case Construction Equipment has recently launched the brand new EX Series backhoe loaders in India -the 770 EX, 770 EX Magnum and the 851 EX. Rich salt harvest with the Wirtgen Surface Miner 2200 SM Wirtgen comes up with its surface miner 2200 SM which is useful for profitable salt harvest with its maximum cutting performance
Exportadora del Sal S.A. (ESSA) operates
huge sea water salt evaporation ponds not far from the city of Guerrero Negro in Western Mexico. The salt level grows by about 20 cm over the course of one year. The resulting salt crust needs to be harvested with great precision to allow for a maximum salt yield, create an even and clean surface and avoid damage to the newly forming salt crust. The Wirtgen Surface Miner 2200 SM, which has been designed with a maximum cutting depth of 25 cm, a cutting width of 3.8 m and an engine output of 708 KW/963 PS, is perfectly tailored to meet this challenge. The cutting drum is mounted close to the machine’s centre of gravity to guarantee maximum cutting performance. It produces even, stable surfaces that are ideally suited to the use of trucks. The four track units can be adjusted in height separately via hydraulic cylinders to allow accurate

setting of both cutting depth and cross slope. Field operation quickly showed that the machine is utilised to optimum capacity when operating at an average cutting depth of 20 cm and working speed of 15 to 20 m/min. Since 2012, the 2200 SM has been setting new
standards in ESSA’s salt mine. The fines content of the mining material precisely meets customer specifications and the machine’s performance is quite impressive too. The 2200 SM harvests an average 895 t/h of salt at diesel consumption rate of only 0.12 l/t respectively. As a result, nothing stands in the way of a profitable salt harvest. n

CB India Ltd. is recongnised as one of the leaders in manufacturing road building equipment. Its continuous focus on innovation while designing its products has helped it meet everchanging market needs. In an exclusive interview with B2B Purchase, Amit Gossain analyses the reasons behind slower growth in Indian market and also talks about JCB’s various road building equipment.
Globally, 2013 was the third most profitable year in JCB’s history. How do you look at its performance in India? 2013 was a good year for JCB. However, we witnessed a slowdown in India due to the overall economic slowdown. India remains to be one of the crucial markets for JCB and we are hopeful of seeing a turnaround in the coming months.
Today, JCB has 59 dealers and 575 service outlets. We have strategically expanded our after sales support around the country. Innovative products, extensive dealer network and manufacturing facilities are the prime reasons that JCB has gained market share across product categories in 2013.
Could you highlight the major reasons for slower growth in Indian market? By when can we expect to see a rise in the demand? Delay in project execution coupled with political uncertainty, land acquisition issues, environmental clearance issues etc. are the major reasons for this hold up. Although government has shown strong intent to resolve these issues by introducing various reforms, successful
implementation on the ground has yet to be seen. Formation of Cabinet Committee on Investments (CCI) and Project Monitoring Group (PMG) to debottleneck and fast track big ticket infrastructure projects has helped a lot. However, it needs to be mirrored at the state level as well with a regulatory body to carry out active monitoring and to streamline end-toend coordination. We are hopeful to see some movement in infrastructure sector in second half of the current financial year. Now government will have to start by unleashing a wave of reforms in multiple sectors particularly in the
JCB has always continued to launch innovative and quality products. We currently offer range of construction equipment products in India and have introduced a series of new and innovative products. In the backhoe loader range, we have introduced a new version of JCB 3DX - the new JCB 3DXcellence. infrastructure sector. The primary agenda is to de-bottleneck stalled infrastructure projects on ground and increase investments in the sector. The infrastructure industry hopes that mechanisms will be put into place to ensure that the top 20 projects of national importance are implemented expeditiously. The need to remove the severe infrastructure deficit across the country is evident and imperative.
Could you update us on your Jaipur facility? When is the production of new range expected? JCB has recently showcased new manufacturing facility which is its fourth in India. The two plants are in the final stages of construction in Jaipur. Road building is going to be a crucial area as far as Indian
infrastructure sector is concerned. So, what are your long- and shortterm objectives to strengthen your position in the road building equipment segment? Road building equipment segment has seen considerable growth in the past few years. For the current financial year, NHAI plans to award 2,000 Km through cash contracts, and is ready with 3,000 Km to be bid via the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. JCB offers road compaction equipment through its Vibromax series (VMT115, VMT860 and VMT330). VMT330 tandem roller is a latest addition to the portfolio. VMT330 tandem roller is a highly versatile compactor with high compaction forces. This machine is ideal for compaction in restricted spaces as it has got high kerb clearance.
JCB VM115 comes with dual antivibration isolation system which reduces the vibration, thus making it more comfortable for the operator to operate the machine. This machine also has a 3 point pre-loaded antivibration pads which also minimises the effect of vibration. The 9T tandem roller VMT860 is designed to offer high productivity and reliability with maximum operating economy. It is powered by robust, fully tropicalised, low fuel consumption JCB engine ecoMAX. The ideal combination of static weights, centrifugal forces and amplitudes makes this asphalt roller perfect for a wide range of both soil and asphalt applications, from rolling sub-base to finish rolling. n

Road Building Equipment
Less fuel consumption to bless the road building segment “Fuel efficiency without operational efficiency has no meaning at all. The major business of road building is to build roads by consuming minimum possible fuel,” says Rajinder Raina, General Manager - Marketing, Escorts Construction Equipment.
T
he Escorts Group is among India’s leading engineering conglomerates operating in the high growth sectors of construction and material handling equipment, railway equipment and auto components. It manufactures and markets a diverse range of construction and material handling equipment like cranes, loaders, vibratory rollers and forklifts. Today an increasing need of fuel efficient machines could easily be observed in road building equipment segment. In an e-mail response to B2B Purchase, Rajinder Raina explains the significance of less fuel consumption and talks about the solutions offered by Escorts CE as well.
In road building equipment segment, what are the new technologies you have developed to reduce fuel consumption? Fuel comprises the major cause of operation in production machines. With increasing fuel prices the importance of fuel consumption has increased multifold. As we speak about the production machines, the best measure of monitoring fuel consumption is the amount of work done per unit of fuel consumed. We, at Escorts, have been working up on getting the best output from the machine out of every litre of
20

fuel consumed. Also, lesser the fuel consumed lesser the cost of lubricants. We are currently supplying machines with Bharat Stage III compliant engines on our entire range of vibratory compactors. A lot of work has been done on heat balance of the engines as these machines have to work in ambient temperatures going as high as 45-47 C.
major deliverable of compactors is compaction which is measured against laid down norms and it is non-negotiable. For manufacturers, delivering operational efficiency is a given and fuel efficiency is the competitive differentiator. Therefore it is imperative that fuel efficiency cannot come at the cost of operational efficiency.
Up to what percentage of fuel savings the new models offer compared to the earlier versions? It would be pertinent to state that fuel consumption in compactors has to be linked with the compaction results delivered by the machine. Escorts soil compactors and tandem vibratory compactors give a saving of 10-15 per cent on the fuel consumption for delivering specific compaction results as compared with the earlier variants.
Please name your new fuel-efficient road building equipment and their capacities. Escorts offers the widest range of road compaction equipment which are as follows with their maximum operating weight: • Soil vibratory rollers: EC 5250 - 10.3 tonnes and 2420 - 12.1 tonnes • Tandem vibratory rollers: HD85 9.3 tonnes • Mini tandem vibratory roller: EC 3664 – 3.2 tonnes.
Being fuel-efficient, is it possible to maintain operational efficiency also? To start with, the term ‘fuel consumed per hour’ is highly misleading term in any production machine. Fuel efficiency without operational efficiency has no meaning at all. The major business of road building is to build roads by consuming minimum possible fuel. Today the
Improvement is a continuous process which is ongoing for all these machines. The compactors have to deliver through exceeding the job requirements and customer expectations. Escorts has its ears to the ground, particularly keeping in view the fact that there will be an increasing demand for road compaction equipment in near future. n

Chicago Pneumatic’s RX8 breaker simplifies telecoms trenching A rig-mounted hydraulic breaker from Chicago Pneumatic is playing a vital role in a trenching project to lay telecoms cables in Himachal Pradesh, which is based in mountainous Himalayan region.
A
t the start of 2014, contractor M/S Ravi Kumar S/O Deshraj, began a trenching project to lay telecom cable wires across the whole of Himachal Pradesh. However, due to some difficulties like narrow roads, it wasn’t possible to deploy a large 20 tonne excavator. Hence, it was needed to use a smaller 8 tonne excavator, with an appropriately sized powerful hydraulic breaker to remove the rocks that would

Material Handling
PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES
Choosing right material handling systems for efficient warehousing For real control of warehouse operations, a flexible, integrated control system is required to make sure an overall efficient outcome. Material handling systems are finding their extensive use and increasing significance in serving the purpose
A
s we know, a warehouse as understood internationally is a very large area that provides space for optimum storage of different kinds of material. Of late there is an entry of some multinational players in this area and this has brought about the concept of a real warehouse management. Typically these operations in India are managed either manually or with the help of forklifts. While these methods may be good for certain types of commodities, it may not be an efficient mechanism to manage all types of commodities, for example, machineries and heavy components, specialised material and so on. Therefore efficient material handling systems need to be practised for warehousing. However, what could be done to increase the efficiency?
Improving efficiency Material handling efficiency can be enhanced by selection of right storage systems and compatible material handling equipment. A great opportunity for reducing non-productive time in warehouse operations exists in the use of the right material handling and storage

systems. Benefits of using advanced material handling equipment include reduced work-in-process and shorter lead times. Therefore it is important to carry out this function as efficiently as possible. Manojit Acharya, Executive Director, Demag Cranes and Components (I) Pvt. Ltd., “A good and efficient warehouse management system provides for easy load-unload mechanisms, proper storage and retrieval of stored material.” “The role of an efficient materialhandling system is to ensure that a given material in the right quantity is safely delivered to the desired destination at the right time and at minimum cost. Actually this is an integral part of any manufacturing activity,” says Rahul Sagar, Senior Manager Marketing, Maini Materials Movement. Moreover, efficiency can be improved by choosing the right population of the equipment that a warehouse requires, thus eliminating the over burdening the equipment particularly running on battery power.
A good and efficient warehouse management system provides for easy load-unload mechanisms, proper storage and retrieval of stored material. Manojit Acharya, Executive Director, Demag Cranes and Components (I) Pvt. Ltd.
“Right population can be elaborated as right combination of the equipment dedicated for the purpose and operation; this will enable longevity of the equipment life, less maintenance, less running cost, quicker and expected ROI,” explains S S Khasim, CEO Marketing, Horvert Incorporated.
Choosing right material handling system To achieve efficient results through increased productivity, it is necessary to use right type of material handling system in warehouse. 26

Commenting on the same, Mr Khasim says, “The warehouse could be meant for FMCG, automotive spares, cold storage, food products, perishable goods, hazardous products and so on. The material handling systems are chosen depending on the application, the storage racks, the throughput of pallets, and size of the warehouse.” According to Mr Sagar, the selection of right material handling equipment starts from the very first stage of designing of the warehouse, selecting right storage systems based on the type and no. of SKUs, frequency of movement and speed of the operations. “A well planned warehouse will have identified areas for bulk and containerised store. Smaller and heavier components should be stored in designated areas,” points out Mr Acharya. “The material handling systems for different areas would be different. For example, for smaller components up to 3 tonnes or so modular cranes are available, whereas for larger and heavier components, an EOT crane is used. A warehouse can be planned in a manner whereby EOT crane can provide access to all areas and the modular cranes are installed in areas where smaller and lighter loads are stored.” Further, automation can be employed to improve productivity of warehousing operations, whilst consuming less energy and generating less waste.
The operational benefits of automation include speed, repetition, accuracy, safety, efficiency, adaptability and reduced utility and labour costs Rahul Sagar, Senior Manager Marketing, Maini Materials Movement

Mr Sagar also focuses on the use of automation as it has a notable significance. “The operational benefits of automation include speed, repetition, accuracy, safety, efficiency, adaptability and reduced utility and labour costs,” points out Mr Sagar. “The scope for automation is immense as every aspect of warehousing can be automated including entry and exit operations, inventory management, updating and control,” he adds.
Current solutions offered After accepting the need of material handling systems for warehousing, now it is required to see what products and solutions are being offered by current manufacturers in industry. “Horvert has offered many successful solutions to various corporate clients in the span of a decade now. It offers a complete solution for the warehouse and production assembly area with consultancy, supply of the appropriate solution, system, equipment as a turnkey,” assures Mr Khasim. Having experience of over 28 years in its journey of design, manufacture and supply of material handling equipment and electric buggies, Maini Materials has excelled and seeded the industry with mechanised products which helped improve productivity and efficiency of user industry segment. “The strategic alliance with NACCO Material Handling Group, USA to manufacture Yale-Maini co-branded forklifts and reach trucks in India is a significant step forward. Armes Maini, a joint venture with Ferretto Group, Italy is another enabler to provide world class storage systems to modern warehouses,” informs Mr Sagar. At present, Maini Materials is one of the leaders in the market and is adding many new products to its offerings. It provides warehousing solutions to manage warehouse by optimising space, handling time and resources
The material handling systems are chosen depending on the application, the storage racks, the throughput of pallets, and size of the warehouse S S Khasim, CEO Marketing, Horvert Incorporated
while streamlined processes and cost savings. Maini’s range of industrial storage systems and material movement equipment cater to the needs of large and small warehouses across sectors, believes the company. Demag is one of those few manufacturers who have a warehouse management system. It has modular crane systems that can be installed to handle loads up to 3 tonnes. As these cranes are modular in nature, in the event the warehouse at a later date plans expansions, natural extensions can be seamlessly fitted into the cranes installed earlier. ”Our modular cranes or KBK cranes are very popular for such applications. Further these cranes do not need only concrete surfaces for suspension. They can be suspended from wooden or any other structural support,” informs Mr Acharya. Demag Universal Cranes present another alternative for loads larger than 3 tonnes. These cranes can be supplied with various degrees of automation, like manual or remote controlled operation, semi-automatic operation. Thus, from such players’ side, the picture looks enough promising to increase the productivity and efficiency of warehouses by using the material handling systems offered by them. n

fter several studies, and backed by a thorough understanding of customer needs, Konecranes has launched the BOXHUNTER and reinvented the RTG crane. “We are very pleased to announce the launch of the BOXHUNTER and are very much looking forward to offering this innovative crane to our customers in India,” says Nitin Erande, Port Cranes & Lifttrucks AGM, Konecranes India. “We are confident that this outstanding container crane which is an excellent value for money, will meet the needs of our clients,” he adds. BOXHUNTER is outcome of an intense product development effort that reinvented the Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) crane. The BOXHUNTER operating concept is based on advanced video and laser technology that Konecranes has developed for its top-of-the-line Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs). Video cameras located at strategic points around the crane and a sophisticated Graphical

User Interface in the cab gives operator excellent visibility everywhere he needs it. BOXHUNTER is built around the needs of container terminal operators who want the best but do not need all the features or peak performance of Konecranes’ top-of-the-range 16-wheel RTG. BOXHUNTER maintains a steady level of performance, around 15-plus container movements an hour, while still offering the high reliability and low downtime that lie at the heart of the Konecranes philosophy and brand.
Turning things on their head The new BOXHUNTER is built around the operator and the Graphical User Interface operator works with. Main idea was to turn things on their head, literally, and bring operator down to ground level. With sophisticated video and laser technology which is currently available, it’s no longer essential to have the cab at the top of the crane. While bringing the cab
down, hoisting machinery was also relocated down to ground level. This simplifies the overall structure and brings a new ease of access to this machinery, which is great from service perspective. BOXHUNTER also has a new counterweight system that eliminates weight of spreader from every load lifted, thus saving energy.
Standard RTG A simpler structure brings valuable savings to customer across the board. BOXHUNTER is the most modular and standard RTG ever, offered with a minimum of customisable options. It is delivered in containers, by regular container ship. As with all Konecranes container cranes, BOXHUNTER can be equipped with extra operator-aiding, safetyenhancing features such as DGPS Auto steering, TRUCONNECT, Konecranes remote monitoring services. n

Monsoon preparation for tower cranes P.V. Ramdev explains the general checkpoints for monsoon season

T
ower cranes are the critical equipment in the construction industry and face abnormal breakdown during the monsoon. Hence, preventive maintenance for monsoon is essential to reduce the down time. Majority of the technicians or engineers are not aware of this important aspect. Also, extended production pressure due to approaching monsoon forces them to skip preventive maintenance.
A brief check up schedule is discussed here: • To prevent water entry in to motors, cover only the motor terminal boxes with plastic. Do not cover the fan or motor body which may restrict cooling air flow and may burn the motor. • Ensure all electrical panels are closed property if the panels are to be covered with plastic do not cover
the cooling fans. Because the VFD (variable frequency drives) have their own protective cooling system. This hot air must be flown out from the panel. Check all the limit switch (hoist slew and trolley) covers are fixed properly. Check the cable glands are intact. If not, cover the cable entry points with plastic. Check the cable entry of overload and over moment limit switches and protect it from water. Check all gear box oil filling caps and breather caps to avoid water entry into gear box oil. If water mix with oil will damage the seals as well as corrode the internal parts. Check the hoisting brake drum and liners have proper rain cover. Water entry to the braking system not only corrodes the parts but may slip the lifting loads. n

Sai-Ansh comes up with versatile foamed concrete Sai-Ansh Engineers is into foamed concrete plants, dry mix plants, construction equipment, concrete product making equipment etc. It is exporter and supplier of foam concrete plants for various applications.
T
he company presents foamed concrete that finds its use in many applications as explained below in detail.
Light-weight foamed concrete blocks Foamed concrete is used for making light-weight blocks in India, China and Thailand which are mainly used to build partition walls. Due to the light-weight nature of the blocks, they impose a minimum loading on the building. Foamed concrete blocks also provide good thermal and sound insulation. It has low water absorption and a closed cell structure. When it rains, water does not pass through the foamed concrete. When plaster is applied to foamed concrete walls, water remains in the plaster so that the plaster does not crack.
Void filling Foamed concrete is useful for void filling as it will pour into even the most inaccessible places. It can be used not only for planned work, but also in emergencies to provide stability and support very quickly.
34
B2B Purchase
June 2014
Foamed concrete has been used to fill old sewers, basements, storage tanks and voids under roadways caused by heavy rain. It can be applied even through small openings making the work much easier and cheaper than other methods. If necessary, it can also be pumped into position over considerable distance.
Roofing insulation Foamed concrete has been supplied for roofing insulating. A low density mix is chosen and the resulting air content gives the material excellent thermal insulation properties. The low density also has the advantage that it does not significantly add to the overall weight of the roof. Roofing is probably the most widespread application of foamed concrete. Foamed concrete has two benefits when it is used for roofing. It provides a high degree of thermal insulation and it can be used to lay a flat roof to falls. A typical specification for roof insulation is shown here:
Where, 1- structural slab, 2- lightweight foamed concrete laid to falls (50 - 200 mm or more), 3- waterproof membrane, 4- mortar, 5- tiles
Bridge abutment As it does not impose the large lateral loads, it is particularly suitable for bridge abutments. Using foamed concrete, the lateral load is practically eliminated, so the bridge walls do not have to be as thick. This in turn means that the wall foundations can be made less massive. Huge cost savings can be achieved by reducing the thickness of the walls, and the size of the foundations. Trench reinstatement For trench reinstatement also foamed concrete is a good material. The traditional methods of filling trenches in the roads, i.e. the use of granular fill materials, result in settlement and damage to the road and potentially, to the pipes. With foamed concrete
there is no settlement; and as it is very fluid, it will fill any voids and cavities in the trench sides. Also, due to its load spreading characteristics, axle loads are not transmitted directly to the services in the trench, so the pipes are not damaged by the weight of traffic. Unlike traditional granular backfill materials, foamed concrete does not require compaction. This is important since the use of such tools can cause vibration related illnesses among the workers.
Road sub-base Foamed concrete can be used to make road structures less heavy. This helps solve the problem where the traditionally heavy road structures cause severe settlement of the road, particularly in areas of soft ground. By constructing the road sub-base from a light-weight material, the overall weight of the structure can be greatly reduced. Foamed concrete, with a wide range of densities, has proved to be a cost-effective material for solving this problem. Wall construction It can be used for cast in situ walls. These can be made either by using traditional shuttering or hollow polystyrene moulds. This provides a quick and cheap method of building, with the added advantage of excellent thermal insulation. Tunnelling For tunnel construction and repair also foamed concrete is useful. It is used for the filling of voids created and exposed during tunnelling, and for grouting the finished work, including gaps behind the tunnel lining. Floor construction It provides very good material for floor construction. It is ideal for building sub-floors quickly and cheaply. Also it can be used for levelling terrain and raising floor levels as well as for insulation purposes. Ground works It finds its use in various types of ground projects, including stabilising embankments after landslides, highway widening schemes, land reclamation and filling in of harbours. As it does not sink into soft subsoil, redevelopment can begin much sooner after application. For similar reasons, it is also useful for road foundations. Fire breaks The excellent fire resistant properties of foamed concrete make it an ideal material for fire breaks in buildings where there are large undivided spaces. It is used to prevent flame penetration through the services void between floor and ceiling in modern construction, and also to protect timber floors in old houses. Sound insulation It reduces the passage of sound, both from background noise and due to impact. It is, therefore, an ideal material for internal walls and suspended floors in multi-storey buildings, especially ones with communal use n

How to modernise and restart your old batching plants? A plant is as good as software. Hence, by upgrading batching software, customers could actually improve upon the performance of the plant than before
T
he Indian construction industry was suffering from policy paralyses for quite some time. Now, with a stable government in centre, infrastructure projects are expected to move. However, the construction companies in India would still face severe difficulty in kick starting projects due to lack of liquidity. Huge fund is required for purchasing new equipment. In such a situation, many companies could consider refurbishing of existing equipment for minimising capital investment. If you are restarting an old project or else, preparing for starting a new one, here is good news. You can modernise your old batching plants at minimal expenses and save significant sum on capital investments.

IDS Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. specialises in concrete or precast batching plant modernisation. The company has so far modernised nearly 200 old plants across the country and abroad. Sharadh Mukkannavar, Marketing Director of IDS states, “It’s
advisable to modernise a batching plant and try to avoid capital investments until fund flow scenario becomes healthy. Any plant of any size, type or make can be upgraded by doing mechanical repairs and upgrading software.”
TeCHNOLOGY What is upgradation of batching software? If you have a old batching plant, then it’s quite likely that you have to upgrade the software because of following reasons: • Over a period of time, your requirements would have changed • Improved and consistent quality • Receive reports at your office • Generate reports at will • Improved safety • Make use of latest technologies • Receive instant SMS or email alerts • Adhere to changing government requirements • Avoid frequent rejections or breakdowns • Instant support over systems. Then you desire to change batching software to suit your new requirements. For example at many government projects it is mandatory to have a SCADA and computerbased software. The officials require observing certain parameters. Under such circumstances, one can choose to upgrade software instead of an entire control panel.
What is the upgradation process? The upgradation process is simple and economic. Components are to be replaced which are not useful and retain useful components. Typically, during up-gradation one can retain the cabinet, electrical components and electrical wiring. The PLC and other related instrumentation may require to be changed. The solution provider would replace old PLC and components with that of new one on which the new technologically advanced software is built. Within 4-5 days, the plant would work more efficiently than before. By replacing the software the plant owner is assured of better quality and improved performance. When asked to elaborate the benefits of upgrading to new software, Mr Sharadh added, “Any plant can be upgraded to incorporate SCADA and thus honour policy guidelines both central and state governments. He continued, “By upgrading to new software one can increase productivity, improve quality and reduce frequent breakdowns.” Mr Sharadh added that every few years, customer requirements evolve and new software surely satisfies emerging requirements. Many customers could feel that modernising plants is not a great idea from a long term perspective. However, Mr Sharadh opines that spending on upgradation is not a wasteful expense. The upgradation would typically costs around 15 per cent of plant cost. After minor mechanical repairs, the plant life can be extended by few years. Thus, a plant owner can avoid the expenses of buying a new plant.
Concrete
Mr Umesh, Managing Director of IDS said, “Customers don’t have to hesitate investing on very old plants which they may intend to scrap in 2 to 4 years. The same PLC, instrumentation and software license can be used for some other plant with bare minimum expenditure.” Mr Satish, Operations Director of IDS opined, “Any old plant can be upgraded by adding new software including plants with microcontroller based panels”. IDS Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. has been upgrading plants by installing latest software since a decade. The company offers many software options to suit customer requirements. Mr Umesh suggests, “A plant is as good as software. Hence, by upgrading batching software, customers could actually improve upon the performance of the plant than before.” n

Steel industry welcomes new govt’s focus on infrastructure Radhika Markan outlines the recent bottlenecks in infrastructure sector and roadmap for the new government
A
t present, India faces a crisis of inadequate and crumbling infrastructure. Lack of proper planning has resulted in poor infrastructure such as congested roads, inferior transport facilities, power shortages, inadequate steel consumption, and substandard food storage facilities. Previous administrations have failed to move beyond setting up of committees and formulating grandiose plans on paper. As a result implementation and outcomes were dismal. However there is fresh hope in the country with the dawn of a new government headed by Narendra Modi - a man known for his stellar administrative record in Gujarat. Expectations are high and people want Prime Minister Modi to hit the ground running. For sure there are some low-hanging fruit that Mr Modi and his government can pluck right away. One immediate way of building on the already upbeat sentiment is to start projects that are fairly easy to kick off — such as making roads. This is a surefire way of generating jobs and having a multiplier effect on sectors such as iron,

steel, construction material and even transport. On 29th May, short on the heels of his swearing-in, Mr Modi unveiled his top 10 policy priorities with the foremost being a focus on infrastructure. Clearly he seems determined to unblock the investment logjam and revive the economy. The announcement is in line with his grand vision for India which includes building 100 new cities, creating satellite cities around large cities, developing port infrastructure and interlinking rivers. The determined spotlight on infrastructure and in particular road building is very welcoming as India has one of the lowest road densities in the world. India’s road density (measured in terms of kilometres of highways per 1000 people) stands at 2.75 as against the world average of 6.7. Policy delays and regulatory blocks reduced the rate of highway construction awards to just 500 kms of new road projects in 2013. The target was to build 20 kms per day. India will need to invest $1.7 trillion on infrastructure projects before 2020
to meet its economic needs. Half of this investment is expected to come from the private sector. Naturally, the private sector is keenly watching the new government’s first moves. The latter has made a good start by aborting the previous administration’s plan of setting up a road regulator. A regulator would have meant going back to the licence raj. Secondly the performance of government agencies such as Border Roads Organisation and others should be regularly reviewed. Delays resulting in cost escalation should be harshly dealt with. The industry is also paying attention to the back-end reorganisation being carried out. In a welcome move our new prime minister has brought three oftenquarrelling, energy-related ministries under one minister, hoping to crank up the supply of power so desperately needed to advance economic growth. With the disconnect between the departments of power and coal stalling major projects, this move is likely to reverse the trend of declining investment in the sector and improve power generation – the backbone of any industry. 54

The new power, coal, and energy minister intends to realign various functions of his three related ministries for better cohesiveness and to help resolve raging disputes such as coal supply to power stations. Additionally, our coal mining policy has been crying for attention. This is evident from the fact that although India sits on top of the world’s fourthlargest reserves of coal, it has become the third-biggest coal importer after China and Japan. The outgoing regime had drawn flak for allotting coal blocks to private firms instead of auctioning them. Following widespread media and public pressure, the central government cancelled 29 suspect coalblock allocations during the past two financial years. Such fundamental flaws have to be corrected and the new establishment should have the political will to do so. A proper policy framework and seamless co-ordination between the three inter-connected ministries would
surely boost India’s energy supply, and in turn help the steel, cement, and construction material industries to provide for the increased needs of the infrastructure sector. Steel is a critical component of a country’s development and directly reflects on the state of infrastructure in the country. The policies of the past 10 years has led to little or slow growth in steel consumption which presently stands at 75 million tonnes whereas it should have been around 200-220 million tonnes by now. This meagre per capita steel consumption of 60-65kg is that found in a ‘developing’ country (50-150 kg). To become a ‘developed’ nation and a global power, the steel consumption has to be at least 350 million tonnes or the 250-300 kg per capita consumption. It is thus apparent that India has to concentrate on massive infrastructure investment, never seen before in the country. The Modi government has started their work in right earnest. In the few
days since assuming power, they have sent out the correct signals about their style of functioning and priorities inflation and infrastructure figure high on the list. Abandoning of the EGOMs and GOMs is just the start we were looking for – a signal that decisions will be quick because bureaucrats are being empowered. Yes, aache din aane wale hai. n Authored by__

Best PEB solutions for warehousing
Today PEB technology has become one of the most preferred modes of construction for warehouses being setting up across India. This is giving rise to various innovative PEB solutions for warehousing as well as creating enough scope for the present players to prove themselves
I
n earlier days, warehouses were built with traditional brick and mortar construction and then structural steel with trusses and other types of sections made inroads in the warehousing construction. However, with the advent of sustainable construction, pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB) technology came into limelight in the warehousing segment. This concept of PEB technology has now become a widely accepted solution with proven benefits for construction in the Indian environment. Also with ecofriendly construction and fast growth curve in the Indian market, PEB is the most viable construction solution as it is a green product with very little impact on the environment.
Current scenario The trends in technology along with innovations are further giving impetus to the PEB technology in the warehousing segment. Presently more than 80 per cent of warehouses are being built with PEB which has taken over the conventional mode of construction. “Most of the warehouses are standard box type buildings as the design and other infrastructure for any warehouse

depends on the storage requirements. We have always taken care of all these requirements right before starting the design of the building,” says D Raju, MD, Kirby Building Systems India Ltd. It is observed that in the recent past, there has been a significant increase in demand for PEB solutions for warehousing applications. According to Ernst and Young‘s ‘India’s Warehousing Industry – An Overview’, demand for industrial warehousing space is estimated to have grown from around 420 million sq. ft. in FY11 to 475 million sq. ft. in FY13.
Why PEB for warehousing? The surge in warehousing demand is driven by favourable changes to trade and commercial policies. There is an increase in domestic consumption, as well as export activity. Manufacturing has increased and discerning customers are demanding greater efficiencies. As a result, organised retail has emerged strongly. Logistics hubs and multi-modal facilities are replacing the small and scattered warehouses of the past. There is a shift from owned to leased spaces. Flexibility to expand is an increasing requirement, as is environment control.
Most of the warehouses are standard box type buildings as the design and other infrastructure for any warehouse depends on the storage requirements D Raju, MD, Kirby Building Systems India Ltd
Rohit Ranjan, General ManagerMarketing, Tata BlueScope Building Solutions, explains, “The building requirements to support these changes are best met with engineered steel building solutions. Warehouses have to be built faster, so that they can generate revenues faster. Moreover, they have to be built without increasing cost. Since time and cost are their two universal advantages, PEB solutions are the best options for typical warehouse applications.” 58

Challenges do remain as modern warehousing and logistic parks are still at nascent stage of development in India with the growth potential of warehousing industry being very high due to existing demand-supply gap.
New solutions offered by players Understanding the whole picture, it is now interesting to check out what PEB solutions for warehousing are being offered by present players in the industry.
Further, for warehousing segment, PEB structures offer some of the natural advantages like factory controlled fabrication on CNC machines, most optimised design due to usage of standard design softwares, reduction in manpower costs and time because of supply of material without any delay, accident free installation with the highest safety and many such factors.
Tata BlueScope Building Solutions currently offers engineered steel building solutions under the premium quality BUTLER building systems, and contemporary ECOBUILD building systems brands. The FM approved MR24 standing seam roof system, has a one of a kind 360 degree Pittsburg double lok seam.
As the market evolves further, we will selectively bring in newer products and draw more from our overseas experiences
“As the market evolves further, we will selectively bring in newer products and draw more from our overseas experiences,” assures Mr Ranjan.
Commenting on the same, Mr D Raju says, “Kirby has already executed such type of warehouses and is in the process of creating a separate packaged solution citing the increasing demand for cold storages.”
Warehousing segment is increasingly addressing specific requirements for its customers such as offering bare storage, storage with crane facilities, food storage, storage with multi-level stacking and open storage. Kirby India provides a package solution for these types of requirements with its new concept of ‘Rack supported warehouses’ based on the end use of that warehouse. “We are the only player to offer such packaged requirement and have already supplied such buildings to leading logistic companies,” says Mr D. Raju. Kirby is present in both PEB and storage solutions and it becomes strategic for the company to provide end to end solution for increasing demand for such type of requirements in the market.

PEBS Pennar also has received FM approval, a US-based quality approval system, for its double lok standing seam roofing system which comes with 360 degree seaming. The system ensures 100 per cent leak proof roofing system with 10 years leak proof warranty as well. The double-lok roofing system has built a track record of being the most reliable leak-proof roofing system globally. Talking about the benefits of this system, I V Ramana Raju, Sr General Manager-Sales and Marketing, PEBS Pennar, explains, “It reduces risk of leakages from roof, facilitates thermal expansion and contraction of the panel without any damage. It is tested for wind uplift, fire and hail damage, offers simplicity, flexibility and durability, and comes with pre- punched panels and components. With its assured weather tight advantages, this system is better suited for India.” There is now huge opportunity to logistic players to set up temperature controlled warehouses or cold storages as the industry is estimated to grow rapidly in coming years. This will give further boost to the PEB technology as the building part of these cold storages can be done by this technology.
Rohit Ranjan, General Manager-Marketing, Tata BlueScope Building Solutions
As the demand for PEB is on the rise, PEBS Pennar is planning to expand its production capacity (currently 90,000 MT) by setting up another manufacturing facility in North region of India to meet the requirement of the Northern region. “We believe that effective steel building solutions go a long way in helping building owners realise their business goals. This is why our solutions are carefully engineered and customised to meet the unique requirements of customers including on-time delivery,” adds Mr Ranjan. “Our leak-proof roof systems protect our customers’ investments, and our safety techniques assure peace of mind.”
End note In all, PEB technology has become the centre of attraction across India especially in the agriculture and food and beverages industries due to series of measures announced by the government to provide proper warehousing and cold storage facilities for fruits and vegetables, food grains, etc. However, there is more need of temperature controlled warehouses close to farms and transportation of same in temperature controlled vehicles as they preserve the quality, integrity and longevity of the product. n

Tekla BIM: ideal for steel fabricators Tekla BIM software helped TTJ Design and Engineering design 18 giant steel and concrete trees, in the complex geometries involved in constructing canopy “Gardens by the Bay” will have conservatories that will bring in plants native to more temperate climates as well as themed gardens that explore the different cultural traditions that make up Singapore. And drawing attention to these are 18 giant steel and concrete trees, between 25 metres to 50 metres high. These Supertrees, as they are called, consist of concrete trunks with a canopy made of a complex of steel tubes that form the branches at the top of each tree. The tops of some of the trees will have solar cells that will generate power for use in the conservatories below. The trunks of the Supertrees are similarly clad in a steel frame and draped with many types of climbers, flowers and ferns.
A 128-metre long suspension bridge links two of the taller trees together and allows visitors to soak in the view from 22 metre above the ground. Steel is a critical component of the entire project, from the frames around each trunk to the network of branches that form the canopy. The steel work was the responsibility of Singapore company TTJ Design and Engineering, which relied heavily on Tekla BIM software for the entire project.
Design has complex geometries On this project, TTJ worked closely with the architects and structural construction consultants to fabricate the parts needed for the Supertrees.
“Any time you have curved parts, it is good to use Tekla,” says Madam Tan Yumin, the Engineering Manager at TTJ. “This is because the company’s other software has difficulty handling curved members. From our experience, Tekla is the best.”
The Supertrees will also allow visitors to enjoy the view from above.
Working with the design drawings for construction, TTJ began by using

Tekla software to create the general arrangement drawings together with connection details. The drawings were then sent back to the architect and consultants for their approval. Tekla software has been deployed within TTJ for the past 10 years, being one of two pieces of software that the company uses to create drawings of steel parts. Tekla, however, is used exclusively for complex jobs.

relies on Tekla’s 3D models to help the fabricators visualize the structure, a vital step given the complex geometries of each part. After the parts are made, they are pre-assembled at workshop first for checking before being blasted, painted, then sent to the actual site for erection. of the complex geometries involved in constructing the canopy. The interlocking branches at the crown of each tree are a delicate network of steel tubes encircled by a stainless steel cable that pulls the structure together. The cable ensures that the branches do not start sagging and putting undue stress on the entire canopy. To reduce the weight of the overall structure, the steel used in this canopy is very thin, some of them being just 3.2 mm thick. As a result, just 920 tonnes of steel were used to build the 18 soaring Supertrees.
Fabrication process speeds up According to Madam Tan, Tekla has numerous attributes that make it ideal for steel fabricators. For example, it is able to handle changes on the fly so any changes proposed by the architect to the original
drawing are automatically reflected in the general arrangement drawing. TTJ took about one and a half months to model each tree with Tekla. “If we had used ordinary CAD software to do the models, it would have taken us three times longer, says Madam Tan. Part of what speeds up the process is the extensive library of parts that exist, and that can be manually added to. Once architects and the consultants approve the general arrange drawings for the tree, TTJ uses Tekla software to generate the shop drawing for fabricating the joints and every steel part needed, right down to the bolts.
At the site, workers from TTJ begin assembling the different parts to form each tree again, relying on the drawings and the 3D models to help them. Overall, the project has taken about two years to go from the drawing board to the actual structures on the ground, ready to welcome the first of many thousands of visitors. With the help of the 18 Supertrees, Gardens By The Bay will undoubtedly pull in the crowds, all anxious to see these giants close hand. All with the help of TTJ and Tekla. n Contact:

ESurveying developed ESurvey KML to convert maps easily ESurveying has developed a solution to port data between AutoCAD and Google Earth, named as ESurvey KML
Google Earth and AutoCAD drawing Google Earth implementation has brought in a new dimension for visualisation of earth surface. This created the opportunity for civil engineers to present their data in geographic coordinate systems. Mostly, civil engineers display their information for clients with maps and two-dimensional graphics (cartesian coordinate system), either on paper or digitally. With Google Earth there is a way to represent two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions, with an understandable backdrop of earth image. This has enabled civil engineers with a greater opportunity to make it more understandable and impress clients. With simply powerful interface, Google Earth combines and displays stunning graphics and a planet full of data to which anyone may add information and share that information with the rest of the world in just a few clicks. In a very short time Google Earth became very popular (more than 1 billion downloads) because of

its simplicity and power. It is simple to use yet highly stable. Civil engineering drawings such as survey maps use cartesian coordinate system to represent a point. Google earth on the other hand uses WGS84 map datum to represent data. To make drawings compatible with Google Earth a geodetic transformation is required.
KML file Google Earth can open documents called Keyhole Markup Language (KML) documents and overlay the content on available world imagery. KML is a simple text-formatted syntax that provides basic information regarding location, data type (points, lines, polygons), symbology, and attributes. ESurveying develops solution for land surveying requirements such as contouring, earthwork, cross section and longitudinal section. Engineers at ESurveying have now developed a solution to port data between
AutoCAD and Google Earth, named as ESurvey KML. ESurvey KML can convert KML file into AutoCAD drawing and viceversa. Survey engineers can now convert their map drawings easily as a Google Earth KML file and open it in Google Earth. This helps in cross checking the survey data. ESurveying has also developed another free solution using which elevation data from any point on earth surface available in Google earth can be extracted. Using this software even simple 2D drawing developed in AutoCAD can be represented in 3D on Google Earth with simple steps. The pictures represent 3D KML files created using ESurvey KML. With release of ESurvey KML it has become very easy to convert any survey drawing (road, railway, irrigation, canal, layout, city map) to a KML file that can be opened with Google Earth Geo browser. When any survey drawing is seen in relation to imagery and terrain, it becomes very easy to understand the drawing. n

Insulation
PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES
Mumbai International Airport – Terminal 2 Lloyd Built - up TPO Membrane Roofing System
What is the best way to
insulate a steel building? In steel buildings any type of temperature regulation could be a wasted effort if not insulated properly. Hence in order to lower energy costs, effective insulation is needed. However, the question arises is what is the best way to insulate a steel building?
Users
today have found very large benefits in adopting PEB concepts for creating attractive new buildings. In its simplest form, PEB features rigid frame built-up primary structures with secondary structural arrangement to support the external covering of various types. The steel building structures provide advantage of quick erection, aesthetic look and better protection. However, for tropical countries like India, major challenge is due to solar energy absorbed by the roof, heating the roof sheathing and causing the underside of the sheathing and the roof framing to radiate heat downward. Thus steel buildings can be frustrating structures to maintain. The heat can run constantly in the winter, with air conditioning in the summer, and yet hardly a difference can be felt on the inside. Still, steel buildings nowadays have higher market penetration than before and they need to get insulated. Actually type of insulation depends on the nature
72
B2B Purchase
June 2014
of the steel buildings. Some of the major segments of steel buildings are industrial PEB, rail-depot, cold storage, warehouse, textile mills and light gauge residential. However, first of all, we need to understand why the insulation is needed for these steel buildings.
Need for insulation When it comes to metal buildings, insulation addresses two important goals—stabilising the structure’s interior temperature and preventing moisture from entering or collecting via condensation. Temperature controlled built environment is demanded in more and more projects today, whether in manufacturing facilities, retail outlets or in commercial complexes, since ensuring acceptable work environment is a matter of high importance among the users. With extreme summer ambient temperature and humidity conditions obtaining in countries like India, users adopt many energy consuming
systems to attain acceptable interior conditions. Where conditions are severe, HVAC systems, involving mechanical refrigeration, are employed to optimise indoor conditions involving expenditure of energy. In dry areas where summer conditions are nominal, acceptable indoor temperature conditions may be attained by ventilation featuring air washers, as in evaporative cooling systems.
Best way to insulate steel building is adopting right design and right execution strategy all at a time Biswajit Roy, Manager- Building Solution, U.P. Twiga Fiberglass Ltd.
“In all such cases, provision of an external insulated envelope is indeed an absolute necessity to prevent wastage of energy. In addition, designers may demand a high level of air and vapour tightness in the envelope as well,” says N Srinivas, Mentor at Llyod Insulations India Ltd. “In moderate environments, indoor conditions may be kept within limits merely by provision of insulation coupled with suitable natural or mechanical ventilation. Enclosures with air or vapour tightness may not be demanded in such cases.”
Safety matters There is need for insulation from safety point of view as well. In addition to absolute weather integrity, all building envelope systems need to possess the required structural strength to meet external loads like wind and gust forcespositive, negative as well as cyclic. Again without exception, all building enclosures have to be safe against fire- both external and internal. Ways to insulate steel buildings The conventional insulation way or product does not offer a long-term effective solution and it rather becomes a costly affair due to high repair and maintenance costs or sacrificing the comforts. Keeping in mind this issue and to overcome the same, Atul Khanna, General Manager, Supreme Industries Ltd., introduces its new product, “We have developed a cost effective solution to this perennial problem - INSUshield 5/6 mm composite with both side factory laminated aluminium foil, which works as a effective radiant heat barrier blocking the excess heat coming through the roof structure.” INSUshield works on the principle of reflective heat insulation. The bright surface of aluminium foil has the ability not to absorb but to reflect more than 95 per cent of the infrared rays which strike it. Since aluminium foil has very low mass-to-air ratio, very little conduction can take place, particularly when only 5 per cent of the rays are absorbed. The amount of radiation emitted is a function of emissivity factor of the surface. As the radiant barriers reduce only radiant heat transfer, the use of INSUshield helps in providing added advantage of barrier against conductive heat transfer. Reflection and emissivity by surfaces can only occur in space. The composite INSUshield can be installed very easily while erecting the roof panels by placing and fixing the sheet maintain an air gap of 20 mm or more. For existing structures installations can be carried out with the support of steel wire or wire mesh. Further, it is observed that the hotter the climate, the more beneficial the radiant barrier installation becomes. Lloyd Insulations finds its way to better insulate the buildings. In applications where high noise transmission rating and good internal noise absorption are called for, the company offers built-up or factory finished solutions which

are easily integrated into the metal building structures. Llyod’s products like ROCKLOYD rock wool, ISOLOYD polyisocyanurate and LLOYDFOAM polyurethane (both pre-formed and in-situ sprayed) and LLOYDPANEL system, which is a metal faced factory finished sandwich panel for high efficiency structurally strong thermal insulation, provide the base for the company’s bespoke offerings. “All these products, apart from high functional efficiency and robust strength, provide pleasing aesthetic elevations as well. Innovative concepts like hidden fastener fixing, horizontally laid disposition and a wide array of colours in which these can be offered give the architect an exciting set of options today,” believes Mr Srinivas. Whereas assuring the performance of INSUshield, Mr Khanna comments, “The composite INSUshield when placed on the falls ceiling, much of the heat radiated from the hot roof is reflected back toward the roof. This makes the top surface of the falls ceiling cooler than it would have been without a radiant barrier and thus reduces the amount of heat that moves through the ceiling into the room.” Supreme Industries believes that its composite INSUshield insulation solution is ideal for steel prefab structures, industrial sheds, textile units, automotive workshops etc.

Different buildings different needs In practice, there are different types of steel buildings for various purposes. Hence, obviously these structures set different criterion for insulation according to their needs and application. “Best way to insulate steel building is adopting right design and right execution strategy all at a time,” comments Biswajit Roy, Manager Building Solution, U.P. Twiga Fiberglass Ltd. Unconditioned steel buildings like warehouse and some industrial sheds require long and flexible insulation with tough facings. Polypropylene or high density reinforced aluminium based FSK laminated fibreglass wool with lateral facing extension is an option where blanket length can be in a range of 15m to 30 m. The insulation should have thermal resistance in a range of R(SI):1.2 to 2.1 sq.m.K/W for roof as well for the wall. Fire safe insulations complying non combustibility, Class P, Class ‘O’ /Class 1 rating are must. For conditioned steel buildings like few areas of industrial shed, cold storage and light gauge residential, thickness of insulation need to be about 100 mm to comply thermal resistance R(SI)-3 sq.m.K/W. Again polypropylene or aluminium based low density (e.g 16 Kg/cu.m) and high thickness fibreglass insulation can be applied at roof and wall so that heat load is reduced and energy can conserved. For textile mills the application of insulation need to be designed for humidity. Aluminium based vapour retarder can be used on both faces of the flexible insulation blanket that placed over the purlin. The metallic grids of the false ceilings also need to be insulated to avoid any possible condensation. According to Mr Roy, while designing insulation for steel building, following checks need to be followed: • What is the R-value needed for roof and wall as per the design? • What is the best possible combination
In moderate environments, indoor conditions may be kept within limits merely by provision of insulation coupled with suitable natural or mechanical ventilation N Srinivas, Mentor Llyod Insulations India Ltd.
of light density and thicknesses that matches the R-value? • Is the insulation non-combustible and meets all required fire safe criteria? • Which facing option is having better strength to avoid weld mesh requirement? However, the real task starts after finalising the design, which is nothing but the actual execution. Hence while executing insulation in a steel building following checks need to be applied: • Is the laying of the insulation proper and applied under tension? • Are the facing tabs are stapled to join laterally? • Are the longitudinal joints made on the purlin? • Are there any damage patches that need to be sealed? The emerging trend of high speed and low energy intensive construction, insulated steel buildings would definitely play a key role. “High performing and sustainable fibreglass wool insulation is the answer for passive and futuristic architecture,” believes Mr Roy. In all, proper insulation can save energy and in turn heating and air conditioning costs. Moreover, it can muffle sound from interior equipment or activity as well as exterior noise. Last but not the least; it can significantly improve return on investment. Thus to avail such benefits, it is essential to insulate steel buildings in best way. n

building industry a range of thermal efficient colours and even greater durability because of the reduced heat stress on the entire roofing system,” said Mahendra Pingle, DGM, Market Development – Coated Steel, during the launch. Thermatech technology in Colorbond steel reduces the temperature inside the building by up to 6 C in hot weather, depending upon the level of insulation already installed, thus reducing the need for air conditioning. In moderate to hot climates, it can reduce annual cooling energy consumption by up to 15 per cent as compared to roofing materials of similar colour with low solar reflectance. The technology also helps mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. The company has further expanded its colour range by adding 5 new colours with the high SRI values other than Surfmist (SRI-81), these include Mosaic Blue (SRI-82), Aloe Green (SRI-82), Fantasy Yellow (SRI-82),
Neutral Beige (SRI-80) and Ivory Grey (SRI-80). Riten Choudhry, Managing Director, Tata BlueScope Steel Limited said, “Colorbond steel with Thermatech solar reflectance technology sets a new benchmark in the industry and provides property owners, architects, builders and developers with a better building material option to keep pace with the changing need of the hour. The launch of this technology is a step towards creating a future that is comfortable not just for people but the environment too.” Colorbond steel with Thermatech technology is manufactured at Tata BlueScope Steel’s coated steel manufacturing facility in Jamshedpur. Use of jute geotextiles
The moment has come to support jute geotextiles for the sake of a cleaner environment and larger national interests
in rural road construction G
eotextiles belong to a class of technical textiles that have varied applications in geotechnical engineering. The engineered fabric improves soil behaviour through separation, filtration, drainage and reinforcement. Developed countries invariably use geotextiles made out of man-made fibres in road construction, for control of erosion, consolidation of soil and stabilisation of slopes. In India we have the advantage of abundance of jute fibres supported by an industry that has century-old experience in making of any type of jute fabric, besides providing sustenance to about 4 million people directly and indirectly.
Jute Geotextiles (JGT) and its technology Jute geotextiles is a natural variant of man-made geotextiles and used in the same way as its man-made counterpart the technology which is accepted all over the world. Extensive studies and experiments have been conducted on JGT in technical institutions in India (e.g. IITs in Kharagpur, Delhi, Roorkee

and Mumbai as well as Bengal Engg. & Science University) and abroad (e.g. Singapore State University, Bangladesh University of Engg. & Technology, Cranfield University, UK). The purpose of using geotextiles in road construction is to strengthen the sub-grade for ensuring both longer life of the pavement and economy. Geotextiles—be it man made or natural—act as a separator between the sub-grade and the base course of the pavement overlying it, prevents migration of the top soil particles, and helps dissipate development of overpressure by draining off water across and along its own plane. The aforesaid functions help consolidate the soil without extraneous mechanical intervention. Soil consolidation being a time-dependent process, the road sub-grade becomes self-reliant with the passage of time. Usual period of such consolidation, as observed in laboratory studies and field trials, is 1-2 years at the most, depending on the type of soil and nature and intensity of traffic.
In fact, all geotextiles act as change agents to the soil on which it is laid for the initial period of 1-2 years after which
Condition of the road before application of JGT

Expert Column use of any geotextile is redundant. JGT scores over man-made geotextiles due to its eco-concordance, price competitiveness, excellent drapability (the best among all geotextiles when wet), high initial modulus and roughness co-efficient. It has been established after extensive field trials that improvement of CBR percentage of the sub-grade is minimum 1.5 times its control value. As soil consolidation is a protracted process, improvement in bearing capacity of soil may continue for several years. In some cases, CBR value is seen to have increased even more than three times its control value after a lapse of 6 years. The higher CBR implies a lesser thickness of pavement. The cost of JGT is thus partially or fully compensated. When mechanism of functioning of geotextiles as indicated is considered, bio- degradation of JGT is not a technically discouraging factor. Jute can be treated suitably with an eco-friendly additive to last for two to three years and thus help achieve the desired consolidation of the sub-grade. IIT Kharagpur has

recently identified such an additive and conducted durability studies on jute fabric in a research project assigned to the institute by the National Jute Board under Jute Technology Mission launched by the Union Ministry of Textiles. Jute geotextiles can also add to the stability of road embankments. Appropriately designed jute geotextiles can be inserted within an embankment
at different levels to control settlement and rotational slides. Additionally, the embankment slopes, which are vulnerable to erosion, can be overlain by open weave jute geotextiles to reduce the velocity of surface run-off after the rains and entrap the detached soil particles. is in fact a bio-engineering measure that is being increasingly favoured in the developed countries for controlling surface soil erosion with obvious environmental advantages. The World Bank is supporting such measures. It has been observed in laboratory experiments conducted in Jadavpur University that the loss in strength of JGT is compensated by the gain in strength of the soil body. This means that the rates of the two contrasting phenomenon, i.e. degradation of JGT and improvement of soil, are in consonance. Sub-grade in a road draws its strength from separation and membrane effects principally. Pore water pressure is relieved as a result of concurrent filtration and drainage functions by JGT, which was also used as a capillary cut-off in the pilot project to prevent ingress of water from below.
Pilot project with JGT in rural roads The National Jute Board (NJB), the promotional body under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India (erstwhile Jute Manufactures Development Council), upon a pilot project under PMGSY with the support of Ministry of Rural Development, National Rural Roads Development Agency and the Ministry of Textiles in December 2006. The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) was appointed as the technical consultant. The project was spread over five states (Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odissa and West Bengal). Ten roads, two in each state, were decided to be constructed with JGT to study its effectiveness as separator, filter, drainage medium and reinforcing material. The main objectives of this pilot project were to evaluate the beneficial effects of the use of JGT in all its three major functions and standardise different types of JGT for different applications in road construction. Detailed project report for each of these roads was prepared by CRRI. The project roads were constructed by the respective state agencies (State RRDAs and PWD). CRRI was entrusted with the job of quality management and third-party random quality checking and performance evaluation. STUP

Consultants Pvt. Ltd. was engaged as the supervision consultant by the National Jute Board to ensure quality control over the works. Ultimately, out of the 10 subprojects, the one in Hooghly district of West Bengal could not be taken up due to unworkable site conditions. The road remains perennially water logged. All the remaining nine roads have been completed. The road length in Jajpur district of Odissa, however, had to be reduced to 2.70 km (instead of 4 km) owing to land problems. CRRI has completed the exercise on performance evaluation of five roads, viz. two roads in Assam, one road each in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. CRRI monitored performance of the five roads for more than 18 months from the date of completion. It has also taken measurements (Benkelman beam deflection test, DCP test) on the five roads to evaluate performance of the pavement proper. CRRI has finally commented that the performance of all the five roads designed with lesser thickness with JGT is similar to pavements designed as per IRC: SP 20: 2002 for rural roads without use of JGT. JGT samples were also exhumed and taken to the Institute of Jute Technology Kolkata for tests to observe the extent of degradation. It was observed that the tensile strength of the fabric got reduced by about 20 to 30 per cent after 11 months and by about 70 to 90 per cent after 23 months. Despite progressive de-gradation of JGT, the pavement performed satisfactorily that JGT or any geotextile act as a change agent to the soil (in the instant case, subgrade) for a limited initial period by which time the soil progressively gains strength and ultimately becomes selfreliant as a result of development of effective stress within the sub-grade.
Gist of other salient case studies JGT has been and is being applied in many roads — mostly low volume roads — for improvement of sub-grade with success all over the country. A synopsis of case studies
in some roads constructed with JGT under varying climatic, geotechnical and loading conditions is presented below.
Re-construction of a damaged road on soft marine soil at Kakinada Port, Andhra Pradesh (case study by CRRI) • Objective: Minimising postconstruction settlement, lateral dispersion of fill by use of JGT • Soil composition: Mainly clay up to a depth of 4 metres • Year of reconstruction with JGT-1996 • Results: After 7 months, the shear strength of the sub-grade ensured the desired factor of safety. • Water content, void ratio and compression index decreased while dry density and CBR value of the subgrade increased substantially (nearly 3 times the control value after 7 years) • The road is in excellent shape after more than 10 years after its reconstruction. Internal road in Kandla Port, Gujarat (case study by CRRI) • Objective: Mitigation of the problem of settlement due to intermixing of sub-grade and sub-base in apportion of the road by use of JGT • Year of construction: 1997 • Results: Rut depth was minimised and other visual signs of distress were eliminated • Settlement of the test section was compared to conventional pavement construction with increment of extraneous load from 0.5 tonne/sq. m. to 2.0 tonne/sq. m. at 0.5 tonne/sq. m. per month 3 months. Negligible settlement was observed with no visible signs of distress. International project on JGT Currently an international project on JGT for application in rural roads have been taken in hand with the financial support of the Common Fund For Commodities (CFC), Amsterdam, a financial institution of the United Nations, with the support of the Government of India and Bangladesh. NJB is the PEA of the project. The project envisages 16-field applications in India and 10 in
Expert Column Bangladesh. All the works in India have been completed and those in Bangladesh will be completed latest by a couple of months. Out of 26 field applications, 12 applications are in low volume roads (7 in India and 5 in Bangladesh). Performance is being monitored at regular intervals. The outcome will be known at the end of the project (in 2015). Interim measurements conform to previous results.
Standards on JGT In the annual session of the Indian Roads Congress 2011 in Lucknow, a state-of-the-art report (Special Report 21) on application of JGT prepared jointly by CRRI and NJB was released. BIS standards on rural road and river bank erosion control applications (IS 14715: Part I and Part II: 2013) have also been published, besides a standard on guidelines for slope erosion control with JGT (IS: 14986:2001). The Indian Roads Congress has permitted the use of JGT in roads as an innovative engineering material provisionally.
Availability and quality assurance of JGT The composite mills in West Bengal are capable of manufacturing jute geotextiles meeting the specifications of end users. These mills will assure availability of jute geotextiles. There exist full-fledged testing facilities in department of jute and fibre technology, Calcutta University and Indian Jute Industries’ Research Association in Kolkata. NJB offers its free services for design and quality assurance of jute geotextiles ordered by end users.
Conclusion More than 50 field applications with JGT in roads in India have been so far undertaken with remarkable improvement in CBR value (measure of bearing capacity of soil) of the subgrade. Extensive laboratory studies in engineering and research institutes of India and abroad have been and are being carried on JGT. Besides, JGT fits in with the current global trend to

use such materials in constructions as would ensure reduction of carbon footprint. Jute products are a major foreign exchange earner and play an important role in the national economy. Jute provides sustenance to at least 5 million people of the country directly and indirectly. Jute industry is struggling for survival in view of the ingress of artificial polymeric materials in the sack-market. It is time to support JGT to the extent technically permissible in geotechnical applications for the sake of a cleaner environment and larger national interests.

IMFA starts production of eco-friendly low density aggregate ` 75 crore project enables path breaking use of fly ash
I
ndian Metals & Ferro Alloys (IMFA), a fully-integrated producer of valueadded chrome in India, has started production of Low Density Aggregate (LDA), which is an eco-friendly product made from fly ash generated by thermal power plants. Given its fully integrated business model, IMFA operates 258 MW captive power generation capacity and own chrome ore mines. LDA is a substitute for natural aggregates (stone chips) quarrying of which in itself adds to the pollution load. Moreover, LDA has the added advantage of being light weight so it adds mass to concrete without corresponding weight.
The permeable surface of LDA pellets also enables better quality concrete as opposed to stone chips. Although LDA is in use globally, it is being produced in India for the first time. The composition is about 85 per cent fly ash and this plant which has been put up at a cost of ` 75 crore will gainfully utilise about 120,000 tonnes per annum of fly ash. IMFA also has 2 units of fly ash brick plant with collective capacity of 1,00,000 fly ash bricks per day. Commenting on the development Jayant Misra, Director (Corporate)
and COO, IMFA said, “This investment demonstrates our commitment to the environment. We are also delighted to be a trailblazer yet again and are confident this product will be of great use to the construction industry.” IMFA is fully integrated producer of value-added ferro chrome with capacity of 275,000 tonnes per annum. Incorporated in 1961 and headquartered in Bhubaneswar, the company has manufacturing complexes in Therubali and Choudwar backed up by captive power generation of 258 MW and own chrome ore mines in Sukinda, Mahagiri and Nuasahi. n

Nature of construction chemicals industry in India “Currently it is observed that a concrete admixture has become essential for construction and completion of a new structure can’t be imagined without the use of construction chemicals,” explains M A Waheed, Technical Director, Perma Construction Aids Pvt. Ltd.
With time the performance demands on concrete increased and R&D of chemicals for modification of concrete became a regular industry which is now known as ‘Construction Chemicals Industry’. To keep with the pace of developments, it took upon itself to develop products which help construct modern structures by imparting easy workability and better strength development characteristics. In addition, it also maintains structures through various climates extending their life.
Classification Starting from waterproofing compounds, construction chemicals have expanded range to ease the workmanship in demanding situations at various stages of construction. Today each full-fledged manufacturer in this sector manufactures 50 to 100 various construction chemicals. These construction chemicals can be generally

divided into the following groups: • Waterproofing compounds • Tile fixing adhesives and joint fillers • Repair and renovation products • Admixtures for concrete and mortars • Coating and protection products • Construction and workmanship aids.
Codes and standards Generally construction chemicals are thought of when the structure is leaking or in distress or in situations when some extra-ordinary requirements are expected out of structural member such as very high strength bridge girder or superior industrial floor etc. For creating safe healthy structures for mankind, it is needed to revise outdated building codes and civil engineering practices to incorporate the latest technology. India not only needs to create new codes for civil
engineering but also for construction chemicals so that wrong materials do not enter the construction arena putting the structures to risk.
Construction chemicals in India With the increase in demand for RCC structures and the government taking up large infrastructural projects, the need based scope for various construction chemicals opened up in India in later part of 1980s. This gave rise to construction chemicals industry and then discussion of the utility and necessity of the same. Since the construction chemicals were not specified, they were not reflected in the bill of quantities and hence not quoted for. The knowledge about the use of right type of admixture in concrete, for the required end result comes from understanding of the concrete in depth. This should be with respect to available raw 88

materials ingredients, type of cement used, strength and placement requirements and site condition. Again, as the admixtures were not specified, the said industry had to train engineers into this discipline of understanding and using specific chemicals in civil construction. Nowadays it takes knowledge of civil as well as chemical engineering to become a construction chemicals professional. Today we see constructions chemicals executives moving on various sites providing solutions through their knowledge. They help in fine tuning the concrete mix designs for achieving desired workability and strength apart from suggesting the precautionary measures to be exercised.
Current scenario of industry Construction chemicals industry is knowledge based industry which has got to go on evolving itself with new products, technologies and specifications. The relationship of construction chemicals to the civil engineering industry is exactly like that of a pharmaceutical industry to human body. Spurious and duplicate medicines are threat to the pharmaceutical industry, as well as to human life, so is the case with construction chemicals industry too. Some factors like lack of specifications, non cooperation of consultants, absence of a regulating body similar to FDA and the human tendency to pick up the most economical product available have encouraged the unorganised sector jump into this business. Today spurious integral waterproofing compounds, tile adhesives and tile joint fillers are being manufactured and sold by the unorganised sector in such quantities that the organised sector can hardly catch up. Unfortunately this industry doesn’t get any support from civil engineering fraternity, architects, specifiers and the government. Moreover, because of non recognition and lack of knowledge

about the importance of this industry, every manufacturer is fighting his own battle with the central excise or sales tax departments. However, explanation of the classification of such products is not easy anyway even for an engineer to understand. The time and energy which is thus wasted could be harnessed for constructive developmental works. The role of this industry is close to that of a doctor in providing solutions to the civil engineering industry to get healthy and long lasting structures which last for years without any risk and fear.
Conclusion In an effort to safeguards their interest, the manufacturers have finally been able to form an association which is CCMA (Construction Chemicals Manufacturers Association). This association is in touch with various organisations like FICCI, BIS, Architects Associations, Civil Engineering Associations etc to get a deserved status for this industry from the government. However, removing mindless bureaucratic hurdles faced by this industry in its classification under excise/sales tax and getting the requisite specifications incorporated through codes and relevant specification documents would be the focus. The sensitiveness of this industry, its utility in the construction and nation building, demand that it should be treated in slightly different way and the government needs to simply support it. n

hembond Chemicals Limited is into manufacturing of construction chemicals, water proofing compounds, concrete repair products etc. The company has a well equipped R&D laboratory for testing products, raw materials, multiple regional offices and production plants. The company provides chemicals needed for construction industry. In an exclusive interview with B2B Purchase, Deepak Kanitkar talks about its water proofing products and explains how R&D helps in delivering the new and innovate products.
Low margins are generally attributed to a stiff competition in bulk consumables such as concrete admixtures as well as conventional repair and waterproofing systems.
Brief us on the current scenario of construction chemicals sector in India. The sector has been growing at a good pace since long time. Despite of some setbacks during recent times, the growth has by far been steady. With increasing consumer awareness and probable legislations in future, the growth is expected to keep the momentum or even accelerate further.
Did you launch any new product in concrete admixture or waterproofing segment? Our company has a very responsive and innovative R&D team. We have done a lot of work on PCE based concrete admixtures and have launched various products for major projects across India. In water proofing segment, we have started promoting reinjection hose system along with our in-house injection resins.
What are the challenges this sector is facing? The biggest challenges are increasing credit periods and dipping margins. The credit issues are mainly arising due to financial conditions of major infrastructure development companies as well as a down turn in the real estate sector.
We have also launched Kem Proof 86 and Kem Proof 87, which are meant for water proofing and protection of exterior walls and roofs respectively. Both are elastomeric single component systems based on acrylate emulsions.

STP: increasing floor life through epoxy floorings T
oday STP’s epoxy floorings and coatings are considered to be suitable for a variety of applications like computer rooms, hotel and restaurant kitchens, hospitals, sports facilities and gyms, shopping malls, cinema halls, galleries and lobbies, shop floors, auto showrooms and garages, chemical factories and laboratories etc. Epoxy floorings are formulated by various polymers, hardeners and graded filler. Epoxy coating can lengthen the life of the floor and achieve a great appearance. It can be applied over many different materials, including steel, concrete, and wood. However, concrete is the best surface for laying epoxy floors. Epoxy floor coating performance is directly affected by surface preparation. The integrity and the service life will be reduced significantly if the surface is improperly prepared. A proper surface preparation ensures epoxy coating adhesion to the substrate and prolongs the life of the epoxy coating system.
STP’s range of epoxy floorings • Self-levelling epoxy/PU floor topping – ShaliFloor SL TC 4E/ ShaliFloor SL TC 3PU • Screed/ underlayment – ShaliFloor 3ES • Acid resistant coating – ShaliFloor TC 2ARE • Anti corrosive coating – ShaliFloor TC 2PU • Anti static floorings – ShaliFloor SL AS 3E. Abrasion resistant epoxy screed floor ShaliScreed is a three-component epoxy screed system designed to provide abrasion, impact resistant. It is tough and chemical resistant. It is formulated to withstand heavy industrial traffic and is available in a variety of colours as well. It should ideally be top coated with transparent epoxy/ polyurethane sealers or with self-levelling epoxy. It gives abrasion and impact resistant property to floor.

Self-levelling epoxy antiskid floor topping ShaliDeck SL is a four-component pigmented epoxy floor topping which is laid at a thickness of 1mm to 2mm. ShaliDeck SL Antiskid is joint less, textured, non-porous, hygienic and chemical resistant and easy to clean, maintain. It is available in a many colours and has sufficient strength to withstand industrial traffic with nylon and rubber wheels. It has excellent bonding with concrete and other substrates like Kota stones. Installation Installation process includes surveying, preparation and installation. Here surveying includes surface condition, location of joints with their types and condition, contamination of floor. Also it is important to check the concrete strength, moisture level, presence of vapour etc. while surveying. Surface preparation is considered to be the most important activity in the flooring treatments and requires utmost attention. In majority of the cases the failure of epoxy/PU floor systems is due to improper surface preparation. This process includes removing of existing surfaces like paint, sealer or topping along with removal of contamination like oil, grease, acid, and alkali.
Methods of surface preparation: • Acid etching • Mechanical scarification • Captive shot blasting • Thermal preparation . Out of which, thermal preparation is recommended for oil soaked floors. Its application involves burning of oil through special torch by flame. However, primer application should take place in hot condition only for better penetration. n

INDUSTRY SPEAKS
KiTEC offers unique composite pipes “KiTEC is an aluminium and polyethylene composite that combines the best features of both materials to form a pipe that is light, strong and free from corrosion. KiTEC pipe avoids the unaccepted thermal expansion and deformation of plastic pipe and retains the flexibility as well,” says Avinash Laddha, MD, Kitec Industries (India) Ltd.
K
itec Industries (India) Ltd. is excelling in the business of manufacturing plumbing products. Its consistent efforts to introduce newer technology and newer products help it offering quality pipe fitting and plumbing services to clients. In an exclusive interview with B2B Purchase, Avinash Laddha explains why KiTEC pipes are unique in plumbing applications.
What are the products you are offering in the plumbing segment? We are not in many products as we are offering pipes only and focused on the same. We started in 1996 with composite pipes in different sizes. We have also developed technologies like fitting and jointing to meet the market needs. Industry should start realising that plumbing pipes for a residential or commercial unit are as important as the blood vessels in human body. KiTEC Composite Pipe System (KiTEC CPS) combines the performance of polymer – high density polyethylene, and metal – aluminium, to give a light-weight, high strength, high performance product.
Explain us about the different range of your pipe fittings service. KiTEC pipes are available up to 4” size. KiTEC India is possibly the first company in the world to manufacture multilayer pipes up to 4” size. Full range of fittings in all sizes is also available to meet the specific application requirement.
98
B2B Purchase
June 2014
Kitec composite pipe is considered to be a unique pipe in its segment, please elaborate. There are various types of pipes available in plumbing, mainly plastic and metal pipes. Keeping in mind, each material has its own strengths and weaknesses; KiTEC combines their strengths and eliminates drawbacks to bring a product. KiTEC is an aluminium and polyethylene composite that combines the best features of both materials to form a pipe that is light, strong and free from corrosion. By combining the two materials along with adhesive layers, KiTEC pipe avoids the unaccepted thermal expansion and deformation of plastic pipe and retains the flexibility as well. Moreover, Kitec PE-AL-PEX pipes can be used for hot water up to 95 C whereas plastic pipes can be used up to 65 C only.
What are the present challenges or roadblocks the industry is facing? There are challenges but they are just part of a game. We believe that generated money should be put back into technology. We insist for innovation while manufacturing our products so that they will go a long way. Though there are some difficulties, I won’t call them as roadblocks as I feel roadblock is basically a mental block. Every product has its market. When we came up with composite pipes, nobody was thinking beyond GI pipe or PVC pipe. However, we started people making realise that there is a need to chase such product.
Is there anything that government can do to encourage the industry? It is important to have availability of continuous power at uniform rate throughout the country to avoid unhealthy competition. Govt should ensure the same. In addition, some factors should be taken care of which include availability of finance, improved infrastructure and elimination of labour unrest by providing them satisfying wages. What type of industries you are looking at in order to grow? We definitely want to grow. We are working on new type of jointing system which will make things easier and be economical also. It will be revealed once we are done. Currently we are looking at different industries including gas market. Today composite pipes are finding themselves in domestic gas markets of countries like Australia and New Zealand. Though this is not the case in India, slowly the picture is changing. We just need to move on from our traditional way of thinking. Would you like to share about your future expansion plans? At the moment, we want to develop simpler jointing system. Our second priority is to increase size of pipes even more. Also there is a need to look for some other materials to increase the pressure rating of pipes. Further, we are working on international markets as well which mainly includes Indonesia and USA and hope for more in the future. n

P
entair has developed the airlift membrane bio-reactor (MBR) to cater to the needs of municipal and industrial wastewater applications where stringent wastewater discharge norms are expected. This energy efficient treatment concept comprises of ultra-filtration membrane modules which allow upstream bio-reactors to operate at elevated bio-mass (MLSS). Pentair’s airlift MBR technology therefore offers an ideal small footprint solution for municipal and industrial wastewater applications. Added to this advantage, the permeate quality is superior (turbidity < 0.1 NTU) and the same is achieved with very low energy consumption. Some special features of airlift MBR technology are that the modules are placed outside the bio-reactor thereby enhancing easy accessibility and clean environment, higher operating flux and low trans-membrane pressure. Besides airlift MBR, the company has developed Crossflow MBR with compact 27 ultra-filtration membrane modules to ensure high quality effluent that can be reused directly or further treated. Crossflow MBR combines the biological process with membrane separation. This technology works on in-out mode of operation so that the modules are placed outside the reactor resulting into easy access and maintenance. Typical industrial wastewater sources shall be from refinery, textile, oil and gas, beverage etc. Leachate treatment is also an application where Crossflow MBR technology is being used. Pentair’s Aquaflex ultra-filtration membranes offer a solution to meet highest standards of turbidity and microbiology when it comes to reuse of polished effluent from wastewater treatment plants. Pentair has developed Aquaflex skid design with excellent modular characteristics which handle flows up to 800 cum/hr with an installed membrane surface area of 6600 sq.m. The skid layout enhances ease of maintenance. Some special features of this membrane are dead-end filtration with low energy consumption, use of low cost chemicals and small footprint. Pentair also offers innovative solution called X-Line keeping in mind the customised requirement expected from various customers. X-Line is being well received in the market due to its serviceability, scalability and flexibility. X-line is developed in such a way that it ensures easy assembly at site so that a considerable amount of assembly hours are saved.

HM Digital: first step to the perfect water
Unlike many firms in water treatment industry in India,
HM Digital India began as a global OEM, coming to the Indian market in a later stage of growth. From the company’s inception in 1987 as Heemang Electronics, Inc., the Korean based manufacturer of water testing instrumentation, it designed and sold products to companies around the world. It quickly established a reputation and today, an ISO-9001 certified factory in Seoul is one of its two facilities. The second factory, in Qingdao, China, opened in 2005. It wasn’t until 2012 that the India office was opened in New Delhi. HM Digital believes, as sales increase, the number of roadblocks also rises. This has prompted the company to begin a new campaign: to unite reputable manufacturers from across the water industry in an alliance against intellectual property infringement. It provides marketing, customer service and distribution to a host of locations all over India. Today, all of its products are co-designed between the US and Korean offices. While the company offers a line of testing instrumentation and monitoring equipment as well as OEM services for customised products and private labelling, most in the industry know HM Digital for their inexpensive, handheld TDS meters, which are widely used in the world, claims the company. They have been sold in over 60 countries to date. The company holds international design patents and the recent trademarking of their marketing slogans, ‘How pure is your water?’ and ‘Your first step to the perfect water’. The privately held corporation has a single, simple goal: to provide needed products that are excellent in quality at a competitive and accessible price. n
