New LAUNCH

Daimler India launches 4 new models of commercial vehicles “With the launch of these trucks BharatBenz is now present in all major trucking segments as promised 2 years ago,” says Marc Llistosella, Managing Director and CEO, DICV

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt.

Ltd. (DICV), the 100 per cent whollyowned subsidiary of the world’s leading truck manufacturer Daimler AG, recently launched four new BharatBenz models of commercial vehicles in the Indian market. The models include three tractor models — 4023TT, 4028TT and 4928TT — and one construction mining model 3128CM. The company has sold 7,500 trucks since launch, and now has 17 models on Indian roads. With the launch of the first 3 heavyduty models in September 2012 (2523R, 2523C and 3123C) BharatBenz began its offering of a range of trucks. Subsequently, BharatBenz launched its range of medium-duty trucks in February 2013. It also launched its range of Made-in-India trucks for export under the FUSO brand in May 2013. During 2013, two more heavy-

duty trucks (2528 and 3128) were also launched. While other variants are to be launched, this launch of tractor models enhances the BharatBenz’s range to cover segments from 9 – 49 tonnes GVW. According to Marc Llistosella, Managing Director and CEO, DICV, “The trucking industry in India is experiencing a tough phase. Under such circumstances, customers critically examine the offerings by manufacturers. BharatBenz trucks with their superior all-round performance and TCO benefit therefore enjoy a much greater advantage. With the launch of these trucks BharatBenz is now present in all major trucking segments as promised 2 years ago. The complete experience that the BharatBenz range provides has also triggered a substantial transformation in Indian trucking.”

• 7,500 trucks sold since launch • 3 tractor models – 4023TT, 4028TT and 4928TT • 1 construction-mining model – 3128CM • New products to be launched in 2014/15 • Established network of 75 stateof-the-art facilities

V R V Sriprasad, Vice-President, Marketing, Sales and Aftersales, DICV said, “Tractor-trailers are at the very top of the value-chain in trucking. Hauling heavy goods over long distances, the qualitative aspects that BharatBenz provides in terms of efficiency, reliability, economy and overall TCO benefits become most important and imperative. With all the promised parameters established, the tractortrailer operators would benefit most with BharatBenz. The constructionmining truck on the other hand will provide a very important aspect of reliability considering the conditions in which these trucks will be operated, demand continuous use under tortuous conditions.”

Network Since the launch of the first BharatBenz dealership in Chennai in August 2012, BharatBenz has established a network of 75 outlets in line with its plans to cover more than a 100 locations by early 2015. Finance arm BharatBenz Financial (BBF), a captive financing subsidiary of Daimler offers financing and insurance solution for BharatBenz customers at all dealerships. n

Delayed industrial recovery to put stress on CV loans: India Ratings

The agency expects the ratings to withstand the delayed economic recovery in FY15, barring some transactions backed by commercial vehicle loans

T

he ongoing economic slowdown along with weak private consumption and rising diesel prices are likely to increase the stress in the commercial vehicle loan segment through at least the first half of the next fiscal, says a report published by India Ratings & Research. The agency has maintained a stable outlook on its structured finance ratings. This is because the agency expects the ratings to withstand the delayed economic recovery in FY15, barring some transactions backed by commercial vehicle (CV) loans. Most of the agency’s rated structured finance transactions have an IND AAA (SO) rating which takes into account extreme risk scenarios.

CV loan ABS – Stable India Ratings & Research maintained a stable outlook on CV loan asset backed securities (ABS). Barring some recent vintage transactions which have seen a sharp rise in delinquency, most India Ratings & Research rated

14

B2B Purchase

March 2014

CV loan ABS are expected to continue exhibiting stable performance. However, the agency has revised the asset performance outlook on CV loans to negative from ‘stable to negative’. The delays in industrial recovery and subdued private consumption expenditure will continue to put pressure on the freight demand of medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) and light commercial vehicle (LCV), respectively, for at least first half of FY15. The already narrow operating margins of CV operators can further weaken with the rising diesel price.

Tractor loan ABS – Stable The agency maintained a stable outlook both on asset performance and tractor loan ABS transactions. This is because underlying farm borrowers continue to be aided by a stable rise in minimum support prices (MSP), favourable rainfall and rural development initiatives which have resulted in delinquencies remaining well within the agency’s expectations. India Ratings believes the rural economy continues to be relatively

less affected by the slowdown in the Indian economy.

RMBS – Stable India Ratings maintained a stable outlook on mortgages and residential mortgage-backed securitisation (RMBS) transactions. Mortgage loans continued to show robust performance in 2013 amidst high interest rates and persistent inflation in a slowing economy. The stable performance is the outcome of quality credit underwriting and pro-active servicing deployed by mortgage originators. Also, the high levels of prepayment and rising property prices over the last few years have made current loan-to-value (LTV) ratios lower than 60 per cent across most cities. Hence, any moderate price correction is not likely to have a rating impact. Stable to negative outlook for CE loan India Ratings also maintained a stable to negative outlook for commercial equipment (CE) and a stable outlook on ABS transactions backed by CE loans. 16

g

CV Finance 14

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

f

“CE loan performance has seen some deterioration resulting from a sustained contraction of the mining industry and slow growth rate in key infrastructure sectors. Mining and infrastructure are the key sectors that drive capacity utilisation of construction equipment. While CCI’s continued efforts to clear the logjams in infrastructure projects could push infrastructure growth, mining growth rate is less likely to recover significantly in the next two quarters,” the report said.

What could change the outlook Economic growth at levels lower than India Ratings’ expectation (5.6 per cent in FY15) could impact the outlook of all the asset classes. It said, “The outlook of CV loan ABS could be revised to ‘stable to negative’ from

stable in case of a sustained decline in growth in industrial production leading to lack of freight demand for CV loan borrowers. Conversely, a robust upward trend in manufacturing and industrial production leading to lower CV loans delinquencies would result in their outlook being revised to ‘stable from negative’.” CCI’s continued efforts to clear infrastructure projects, especially road related projects, could help increase the sector’s freight demand. This, along with improved mileage for truck owners due to a better road network, would help their debt serviceability, the report observed.

Lower interest rates could help industry if inflation moderates The key inflation indices sent out

mixed messages in 2013. While the WPI dropped to a 42-month low of 4.6 per cent in May and again rebounded to 7.0 per cent in October, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stayed high in the range of 10 per cent-12 per cent. While the common driver of both indices was the high food inflation, increased fuel prices also contributed to the upsurge in the WPI. The agency expects the average WPI based inflation to moderate to 5.5 per cent in FY15 (FY14 revised estimates: 5.9 per cent). This is likely to provide more flexibility for downward revision of key rates leading to a gradual industrial recovery in FY15. This could improve CV loan borrowers’ debt serviceability due to increased freight demand. n

Shell brings lubricants technology lecture on innovations A panel of industry experts discussed the role of co-engineering and innovation in the development of fuel-efficient lubricants

F

ollowing the success of the first two editions of Shell’s Global Lecture Series at Imperial College, London and Tsinghua University, Beijing, Shell has brought together automotive industry experts at the third edition of the Shell Lubricants Technology Lecture in India at IIT-Madras. Here speakers emphasised on cross industry co-engineering as the fastest route to optimise fuel efficiency in lubricants for vehicles. Dr Selda Gunsel, Vice President, Shell Global Commercial Technology, said, “We, at Shell, believe lubricants alongside new fuel and engine technologies have a unique and vital role to play in meeting the global energy challenge. Our research shows that fuel economy can be improved by using the most suitable quality lubricant for an engine, and that even higher savings can be achieved when the lubricants provider and the automotive original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, work together to develop bespoke products for a particular vehicle. This involves longterm co-engineering projects within the industry.” Co-engineering was further reinforced by Professor Gordon Murray, renowned Formula One and McLaren designer as well as the Chief Executive Officer and Technical Director for Gordon Murray Designs (GMD). He emphasised, “We, at GMD, are developing innovative cars that challenge every aspect of car design concepts, including lubrication. A lubricant is a vital engine component that has more potential than most for improving a vehicle’s fuel economy and cutting its CO2 emissions. That is why we have been working closely with Shell as technical partners since 2010.

Reusing formwork lower in costs, higher in productivity

A good formwork system gives a consistent good concrete finish in spite of multiple usage

F

ormwork is a durable item which can be used on different project, and the reusing formwork is a blessing the industry has. The more a company reuses, the more the productivity. Reusing formwork also results in lower costs.

Need of reusing concrete formwork “The more a customer is able to use the same formwork on different projects, the more profitable it becomes,” explains Mudit Raniwala, CEO, Technocraft Industries (India) Ltd. “A good formwork system will also give a consistent good concrete finish in spite of multiple usage.” The advantage certainly and most importantly is to save on project costs. The associated advantages are saving of environment as the same material is being used multiple times and the consumption of raw material is reduced. “Every project has unique features, requirements and challenges,” Vvikas

Aroraa, Director - Marketing and Sales, Runwal Group, shares his opinions. He adds, “As the design of structural concrete projects becomes more and more complex, a simple method for reducing the cost of construction is too frequently overlooked. Presently, as well as in the past, the most common approach of reducing the cost of a structure was solely to search for ways to reduce the amount of permanent material under the assumption that less is the best. This approach, however, overlooks the most important component in concrete structure cost which is the concrete formwork. The possibility of formwork reuse is determined by the type of formwork and the nature of construction.” According to Pradeep Ghumare, Director, NOE Formwork India Pvt. Ltd., “The ‘number of reuses’ factor represents the number of times the formwork panels and elements can be reused for various projects.”

Reusable concrete formwork There is no restriction to reuse any kind of formworks. The question is — how many times it can be reused and how? “Formwork that are made conventionally using ply is used for a couple of times, but this does not last long and is very labour intensive,” says Mr Raniwala.

The more a customer is able to use the same formwork on different projects, the more profitable it becomes, - Mudit Raniwala, CEO, Technocraft Industries 34

Then there are customised formworks — which are made of plastic, aluminium, steel etc. — can be used for a many times and are also less labour oriented. According to Mr Raniwala, it becomes difficult to use customised formworks in varying projects. After the project’s completion, they are asked to be scrapped. He adds, “Modular formwork systems are not only reusable multiple times but can be used in projects that are differently designed due to their ability to adjust as per requirement.” Modular

formwork systems usually have some adjustments in their panels or some adjustable fillers which enable them to accommodate the panels as per different project requirements. However, these systems too have their disadvantages of not being very user friendly when there are too many vertical members (beams or walls) at close spans. Even reusable plastic formworks can be used. According to Mr Aroraa these interlocking and modular systems are relatively simple, concrete structures. The panels are lightweight and very robust. Mr Ghumare describes it in details, dividing the formwork — which can be reused — in several categories like light-medium duty panelised handset, medium duty nonpanelised H20 timber-based, heavy duty panelised, heavy duty nonpanelised and monolithic custom built. Except the monolithic, custom-built formworks, all have higher productivity.

Enhancing reusability of concrete formwork Taking care of concrete formwork is a no secret to enhance the productivity. “The labour using these systems should be well trained so that misuse can be avoided,” emphasises Mr Raniwala. “If a site supervisor can be deputed by

the formwork supplier for the duration of the project, he not only can ensure proper use of the system, but can train and re train the workers on the system. If the formwork has ply as its skin, it is recommended to use a good releasing agent as this can enhance the life of ply many folds.” Mr Aroraa also gives importance on handing the formworks. He says, “Used formwork panels should be inspected for damage before they are used again. Formwork highly affects the final appearance of the finished structure, so any defect must be checked first and repaired or removed; otherwise the formwork’s defect will reflect on the finished surface of the concrete.” Aluminium formwork should be oiled to prevent it from getting rusty. After the used formwork is repaired, excessive concrete should be removed and oiled. They should be stockpiled and covered. Mr Ghumare has a number of suggestions to enhance the reusability of concrete formwork. His advised measures are minimum number of ties, use of tie-rods (instead of wedges/pins, minimise number of panel connections, fewer number of formwork pieces per unit area, higher single-pour height, larger panel area. He also suggests to lower floor-tofloor cycle time and maintain DIN/EN safety norms. n

In other words, Thermatech technology is able to reflect solar heat, allowing both roofs and buildings to stay cooler. It reduced heat stress also means greater durability for entire roofing systems. Thus, Thermatech solar reflectance technology ensures cool comfort, while reducing energy cost (it reduces electricity consumption by up to15 per cent).

COLORBOND steel ensures that colour of metal roofing/wall cladding lasts for longer time. It has excellent resistance to colour fading and chalking. This is possible only because of usage of stable 100 per cent inorganic pigments and especially developed resin system for exterior application. The ordinary coated steel available in the market typically has organic pigments with standard resin system, which is of low cost and does not provide lasting colour to pre-painted steel used in steel roofing/cladding. Cheap, low-quality paint system has major issue in colour fading as well as early chalking; the difference is easily noticeable after 2-3 years of exposure. While drafting the product specification of project for cladding application, one should choose the product as complete “system” (base steel+ type of metallic coating+ its mass in g/sqm + surface

Tips on using scaffolding materials A

scaffolding system is for providing good, safe access, offering minimum erection and dismantling time. A modular scaffolding system with hardly any nuts and bolts or loose parts such as cuplok system would be an ideal solution.

Technical specifications MAINI cuplok is among the most versatile modular scaffolding systems in the world. Its unique node point connection makes it very fast assembly and dismantling of scaffolding. The absence of loose parts and a unique cup action allow four horizontals units to be fixed or released in a single operation with a hammer.

Step 1: Locate the blade end of horizontals into lower cup

Step 2: Lower the upper cup down the vertical and rotate

Step 3: Tighten with a hammer blow

Step 4: A positive and rigid connection of up to four horizontals

MAINI cuplok is nearly 50 per cent faster than any scaffolding system and therefore, universally accepted and very widely used. The principle feature of MAINI cuplok is the unique node point - locking up to four horizontals in one single action without the use of nuts, bolts or wedges. The locking device is formed by a fixed lower cup, which is welded to the vertical usually at 0.5-m intervals, and sliding horizontals are located in the lower cup. The upper cup is moved down and rotated by hammer blows to give a positive, rigid connection.

Materials used Careful selection of raw materials for various components such as higher grade tubes, malleable cast iron top cups, deep-drawn steel of bottom cups and drop-forged ledger blades makes this scaffolding system a sturdy, yet light. Advantages It is ideally suited for all types of access scaffolding and staging for any type of construction and maintenance work. MAINI cuplok access scaffolding system can be effectively used for buildings, oil refineries, thermal power plant boiler maintenance, chimney stacks, silos, ship, building and

repairs, restoration of monuments etc. MAINI cuplok system is very safe and economical as this type of scaffolding reduces erection and dismantling time significantly.

Reusing capability Due to cuplok’s inherent quality arising out of right selection of various components and with proper maintenance, such a scaffolding system can be used hundreds of times. Maintenance of steel scaffolding equipment some guidelines • Never drop scaffolding materials from a height. • Paint all scaffolding materials once in a year after duly cleaning the same of rusts etc. • Store Scaffolding Materials when not in use in a shed/covered area and stack on raised platform so that stored materials do not get affected by rain/weather.

• Scaffold Accessories such as couplers, joint pins, spigots etc., must be cleaned and greased at nuts/ bolts after every use. • Small accessories such as bolts, hammers, spanners etc. should be taken to the site by “CARRY-BAGS” so that loss of materials are minimized. lt would also keep a check on the inventory of small items. • Have one skilled and experienced person full time responsible for looking after scaffolding equipment. • Also, it will be worthwhile to have regular training sessions for Scaffolders / workmen. • Regular maintenance of equipment through cleaning, painting, inventory controls. • Right use of materials is a must. Also guard against misuse and theft etc. since steel scaffolding is expensive. • Finally, always exchange information which can ensure more effective use of scaffolding. n

and diagonal brace are fattened. This makes the Allround rosette fully useable. To transfer pulling force, every frame is secured by locking pins or bolts to each other. In this way the tower can be assembled on the ground and placed by crane. The product innovation is assembled out of the newly developed Allround Shoring Frame TG 60 as well as Allround standard parts like ledgers and diagonal braces. In this way the advantages are intelligently combined: quick assembly and dismantling, thanks to reduced number of components, light component weight and screw less wedge lock connection technique and optimum material utilisation as a result of variable bay lengths. These can be adapted flexibly to the existing loads and the grid dimension of the formwork beams. Scaffolding companies increase assembly speed with it due to their day-to-day experience and moreover offer an attractive full package: They implement requests of the building contractors no-site without any difficulty with the Allround construction kit — whether they are exact adaptations to difficult building geometries, extensions like production stages and stair towers or supplementary solutions, for example concreting platforms and bracing scaffolding.

Application of Allround Shoring TG 60 For the greatest possible efficiency in

42

B2B Purchase

March 2014

the construction of the 46 metres long and 28 metres wide shoring tower structure, the scaffolding company considered all three construction phases already during the planning: setting up the moulds for the down stand beams, laying and concreting of the semi-finished ceilings as well as creation of the upper floors. In accordance with specifications the scaffolders utilised the material-saving 1.09 metres wide and 1.57 metres long tower versions, which sped up the procedure and simplified logistics. In longitudinal direction they connected the shoring towers at the head of the tower with two 1.09 metres scaffold bays each and one built-in Allround ledger. With the aid of the system components, elaborate calibration was obsolete: After erecting the shoring tower for the first beam axis, the further assembly resulted from the dimensions of the system components and the automatic rectangularity. On the one hand, the scaffolders adapted the 6.5-metre shoring tower structure exactly to the grid of the down-stand beams and at the same

time created ideal prerequisites for the second and third construction phase. The reconstruction work was therefore reduced to the minimum: As a support for the concreting of the semi-finished ceilings, the shoring tower structure was simply raised to the bottom edge of the semi-finished ceiling by inserting a 2.5 metres high Allround standard onto the Allround standard already integrated in the connecting bays. The loads were absorbed by the intermediate bay and transferred directly into the adjoining shoring towers by means of diagonal braces, which made the assembly of additional shoring towers underneath the ceiling obsolete. When building the upper floor, load concentrations were absorbed by square-shoring towers the scaffolders had erected here and there in the intermediate bays. Around 100 tonnes of scaffolding material were used altogether – exclusively Allround standard parts with well-thought-out screw-less wedge lock connection. To assemble the 600-squaremetre structure, scaffolding company,

Construction of Layher Allround TG 60 at South East of Zurich, Switzerland

EXPERT COLUMN this helped to speed up assembly to its experience. In view of the heavy loads, the scaffolding experts chose square shoring towers with a ground plan of 1.09 m x 1.09 m, linked to Allround ledgers and diagonal braces by wedge head connectors and braced — meaning without additional connections using tubes and couplers. The combining of frames, in order to increase load-bearing capacity in the area of the almost 7-metre high wall slabs too, was achieved using Allround ledgers with short intermediate bays. During measuring of the shoring towers, the use of standard Allround Scaffolding components likewise permits a considerable time saving. After assembly of a single tower, the distance to the next tower results automatically with the system dimension from right-angled positioning of Allround ledgers on the ground. The scaffolding solution was also persuasive when it came to flexibility:

the Allround Shoring TG 60 was able, thanks to its two shoring frames of differing height and by the spindle extension length, to compensate for height differences in the angled ceiling and in the slightly sloping ground. The width of the shoring was precisely adapted to the tapering form of the wall of the inlet and outlet structure by intermediate bays of variable width made from Allround equipment, or by extensions in the edge area using Allround standards. It was also possible using simple Allround brackets to build the working levels for the formwork on the wall slab and binding beam, or to construct the site accesses quickly using Allround stairway towers. 150 tonnes of scaffolding material were used in all, which Layher delivered to the site right on schedule and in a very short time when requested. The safe assembly sequence for Allround Shoring TG 60 automatically provides scaffolding erectors with

Scaffolding

all-round side protection, even without additional components, during upright assembly. This allows the valid safety regulations to be met in full for the first time. The use of the new Allround Shoring TG 60 thus ensured crucial advantages for scaffolding company: compliance with the tight schedules required by project planning, optimum working conditions for the formwork and a high degree of safety during assembly work. n

other applications, such as structural sealant glazing or exterior building facade seals.

Points to consider in selecting adhesive or sealant Joint design: The specifics of a joint design must match up with a sealant’s movement capabilities for the installed conditions. Practicality of installation of the sealant and other joint elements and the desired aesthetic appearance also need to be considered. The nature of the substrate is a key factor. Physical and chemical properties: Properties of the sealant, such as modulus of elasticity, its stress/strain recovery characteristics and tear strength influence sealant performance in a joint. The sealant polymeric type along with additives such as fillers and plasticisers affects the performance of the product. Also, the curing type of the sealant will be a critical factor in deciding the sealant to be used. Durability: The adhesion of a sealant to specific substrates and its aging characteristics — which relate to resistance to ultraviolet radiation, moisture, temperature, cyclic joint movement, movement during curing and VOC — can profoundly influence the service life of the installed sealant. Application/ installation properties: Important considerations include the consistency of the sealant, shelf life and tooling time, tack-free time, application temperature range and low temperature “gunnability”. Sealants used for interior applications, even in high-rise or light commercial structures, will have properties and need different from those used in

Key features of sealant Excellent quality: Wacker silicone sealants are well-known in the construction industry for their excellent quality. Weatherability: Wacker’s classic range of silicone sealants for weathering application WN provides good weather ability and UV resistance. The sealant is non-sag and particularly recommended for sealing joints between glass and aluminium composite panels. Adhesion: Primer less adhesion to most substrates. Ready to use at low and high temperatures. They exhibit excellent tooling characteristics for professional use.

Traditional methods of assembling components are use of rivet, fasteners, screws, welding, clamping etc. Most of the time, no one realises whether these methods are sufficient for their products and really required. For those parts, which are required frequently or seldom opening or disassembly, needs mechanical fastening. In such cases, high-precision fastening methods are being deployed. Other than such instances, for most of other assemblies and components, mechanical fastening methods are inadequate. Just because of ignorance to new technologies available today,

TECHNOLOGY

First TIG narrow Gap welding handbook Polysoude has released the first ever reference document for TIG narrow gap welding

T

he quality and productivity requirements relating to welded joints are inexorably driving industrial companies towards the implementation of automatic processes. These primary objectives are however supplemented by more subtle notions such as heat input, weld seam regularity or even aesthetic criteria for sectors affecting the general public. Several decades of progress in TIG welding have seen it become an essential process that offers not only the widest scope of use but also reasonable operating constraints compared with more recent developments (laser or electron beam welding). The effectiveness achieved in producing quality weldments using the TIG process, both in terms of productivity and control in all positions, is at the origin of a large number of automatic applications including orbital welding. This technique has now been popularised with the creation of numerous machines which have boosted recognition of the TIG process as a real alternative for the automated welding of a wide variety of

materials. Efforts made in tool design (miniaturisation, robustness, increased duty cycles, etc.) have made it easier to optimise the designs and service performance of the equipment to be built. The whole range of benefits linked to TIG welding have not only encouraged the automation of sequences that were previously only done manually, but have also been the starting point towards applications involving increasingly large workpieces. Consequently many variants or developments towards highpower welding power sources, or the introduction of additional functions such as the use of hot wire or double wire feed, or the creation of specific tools such as cladding and narrow gap torches have decidedly widened the scope for TIG. Nowadays it is no longer unrealistic to consider using TIG to weld workpieces from 0.5 to 300 mm thick given the numerous relevant advantages. The TIG welding approach on thick workpieces does however require some specific knowledge with regard, on the one hand, to the choice and use of equipment and, on the other,

to workpiece preparation and the development of operating techniques. Productivity is a question that is invariably posed on developing a Narrow Gap operating procedure. However, in order to choose an operating technique, the strengths and weaknesses of that technique must be known beforehand to avoid ending up in an impasse. Productivity gains are considerable and increase in proportion to the thickness to be welded. It is vital nonetheless to assess the thresholds below which the restrictions involved in Narrow Gap welding outweigh the substantial gains. Several decisive factors come into play when analysing this question and the final choice must take account of the notion of relativity which may exist between the various situations. It can therefore be seen from comparative tests that, for thicknesses ranging from 12 to 15 mm, the increase in productivity between a conventional groove (angle of approximately 20 deg) and a Narrow Gap groove optimised in relation to the materials is not significant. if necessary) for all runs from root to cap. All Narrow Gap solutions (i.e. 0 to 100 mm V2 and V3 nozzles, and 0 to 150 mm, 0 to 250 mm and 0 to 300mm NG torches) exist as fixed electrode or oscillating electrode versions.

A D E

The deliberate reduction in the volume of metal to be deposited, which is the main objective of Narrow Gap applications, highlights several operational difficulties including that relating to the lack of visibility for operators to track the welding.

A

E

D

Fig. 3: Increase in productivity between a conventional groove and a Narrow Gap groove

will then increase, reaching a factor of 3 on sections around 55 to 60 mm thick. At thicknesses of 30 mm and above, apart from the specific case of welding one-off parts, a Narrow Gap procedure must be used. The difficulties relating to materials or other operating restrictions are to be considered in order to choose the Narrow Gap technique that is appropriate and compatible with the application in question. Today, POLYSOUDE has a comprehensive line of Narrow Gap welding torches for all thicknesses from 30 to 300 mm. The ranges and thicknesses to be welded are to be considered on the basis of the line of torches created and constructed according to various technological constraints. Each torch has a scope which enables it to be used from maximum thickness (maximum torch insertion depth into the groove) up to completion of surface capping runs. With conventional torches from 0 to 45 mm, electrode stick-out has to be adjusted every 5 to 10 mm, when filling up the weld groove. So-called conventional torches remain fully versatile torches that are suited to all

64

B2B Purchase

March 2014

types of work. A category of intermediate tools called “V2 and V3 nozzles” exists for 0 to 100 mm thick sections. These nozzles have the particular feature of being insulated and channelling the gas to the root better than a conventional torch but without guiding the tungsten via a true electrode lance. From an insertion thickness of approximately 45 mm, these nozzles are combined with removable trailing shield assemblies to complete the weld, oscillated capping run included.

These difficulties are explained by the effect of several combined factors that differ slightly according to the applications, but which include: • Groove width commonly between 10 and 20 mm for depths of 100 to 300 mm. • Welding on flat sheets or large diameter workpieces rendering tangential viewing angles almost impossible. • Preheating which is very often used when welding heavy wall thicknesses. In addition to these technical aspects, it is also natural to seek comfort for the operator stations and to move them away from the arc given that the radiation remains quite strong due to the use of high currents.

For thicknesses of 0 to 150 mm, 0 to 250 mm and finally 0 to 300 mm, a line of torches is also available with trailing shield assemblies (removable

To remain compatible with the industrial environment and refrain from overburdening the tools, it is possible to integrate the video function by design, as opposed to the use of addon external cameras which disfigure the

TECHNOLOGY industrial nature of the equipment. The torch is not only the most complex tool, but is also the one that has the greatest exposure and the greatest influence on weldment quality. Consequently, testing methodologies have been developed

to verify and validate the predominant functions where failure could impinge on welding results. Two essential factors are to be considered: • The duty cycle (all functions mounted on the torch being globally combined and validated by the lack of deterioration of its initial function over time). • Bead shielding quality. Validation is performed for each new torch reference with regard to functions such as video and gas shielding. More comprehensive tests are performed per torch family or as a result of a notable technological development.

Fig. 6: NG torch with integrated front and rear cameras

Once validated, the concepts are reused per family to reduce the development time of variants and to capitalise on lessons learned on each model. It can be considered today that there are no longer any technological issues in using a Narrow Gap torch to

Welding

weld sections with a thickness of 30 to 300 mm. As there is no technological barrier, only technical criteria can be considered. Based on this fact, what are the alternatives, the common features, and the strengths and weaknesses associated with each methodology? The first choice to be made in TIG welding concerns the process variant: cold wire TIG or hot wire TIG welding. Hot wire TIG welding machines generally have higher duty cycles with the capacity to use currents approaching 450 A. There are only advantages to be gained in opting for hot wire welding over the cold wire process and the former is increasingly used to weld sections over 10mm thick. These machines also offer the benefit of versatility and can make use of the two TIG welding variants quite easily. Workpiece profiles, thickness ranges and the environment are all essential data when it comes to defining welding equipment. Welding machines are generally matched to the welding tool to be used. A few typical examples of equipment configuration according to the thickness of the sections to be welded are provided below. For sections less than 45mm thick, usual mechanised or orbital welding equipment is suitable as long as it is compatible with the required duty cycles.

Fig. 10: Carriage-type head with straight rail

More versatile and modular PC power sources are suited to mechanised applications, or even more complex applications such as welding robottype holder-based solutions or orbital welding machines. “Carriage”-type heads offer the advantage of being able to be used on circular or straight rails. The POLYCAR MP (friction drive) can be implemented on combined sections (curved or elliptical, etc.). Due to the simplicity of the POLYCAR MP profile, industrial companies can create their own tool. Straight rails are identical to the “seam welder” notion except for the fact that they can be used in all positions and are an easily implemented solution for linear welds. For thicknesses up to 100mm, the torch holders are the same as for conventional torches. Beware however of circular welds in a horizontal plane which, other than the particularity of being so-called self-restraining welds (high stress concentration), also call for Narrow Gap torches with a curved profile (to be avoided). Beyond 100mm, the tools gradually increase in size forming, in certain

cases, modules that weigh several hundred kilograms (turbine rotor applications, for example). For so-called mechanised applications, the solutions are identical but constructed on the basis of more robust components adapted to the context, the geometry and the weight of the subassemblies, in keeping with the thickness of the workpieces. For orbital welding, however, the weight of the torches, the engagement strokes and the need to consider use of 15kg spools (justified by the volumes of metal to be deposited) call for larger tools than the POLYCAR 60-3 and MP orbital heads. In this case, choose heads capable of moving heavy loads (80kg) with an offset providing sufficient flexibility to adapt to heavy-duty sheet metal workpieces. Use of a welding robot is also recommended for anything other than circular trajectories or where the industrial company wishes to acquire a more versatile tool. There are no particular considerations for solutions involving torches intended for applications up to 45mm. A retractable nozzle torch offers a multipurpose solution provided that electrode changing can be accepted as a non-automatable operation. For heavy wall thicknesses, torch weights and dimensions must be integrated and robots compatible with wrist loads of 10 to 50 kgs selected. The notion of trajectory remains linked to the profile of the torches which limits movements and implies studying torch positioning along the usual three axes. The use of a Narrow Gap torch renders the notion of automated preventive maintenance, such as electrode changing, somewhat illusory. The other approaches are specific to robot use and are to be addressed according to workpiece dimensions and the level of automation (gantry, multi-robot station, seam tracking, etc.). Narrow Gap TIG welding is no longer a solution for exceptional circumstances. It is important to consider it whenever the thickness to be welded exceeds 30mm. An initial analysis is imperative to ascertain the potential benefit, verify the absence of notable contraindications and above all to choose the methodology and equipment best suited to the context. There are a multitude of solutions with a significant level of industrial maturity confirmed by

numerous concrete examples. The difficulties involved in implementing the welding procedures vary according to the chosen technique. The temptation to take a simplistic approach and skip a case-by-case assessment must however be avoided as there is no universal solution. Moreover, in terms of tools, the entire 30 to 300mm thickness range is covered with numerous variants and adaptation possibilities for special cases. For the welding process, knowledge and mastery of TIG are highly important and enable the technique to be popularised, with recourse in the event of difficulties. From the point of view of industrial companies, the implementation of a Narrow Gap application calls for a structured approach with marked steps. In parallel, corresponding approaches for machining facilities, tracking and traceability of materials

and inspection techniques may need to be undertaken requiring validation steps close to those used in welding. All of these anticipatory

measures are justified by the prospect of substantial gains compared with the use of more conventional techniques. n

ECO SAVER with flow meter and integrated gas saver function T

he ECO SAVER reduces the waste of gas, especially in case of tanoncontinues welding process. The ECO SAVER keeps a constant level of the gas pressure on the downstream side at the end and beginning of each weld. This prevents that pressure and flowsurges are created in the pipe line system. The pressure and flow-surge create gas waste and can cause a poor weld.

Functions • Cylinder regulator -- 200 bars inlet pressure, 2 – 30 l/min • Reduce the inlet pressure from 200 bar in two stages

• Saves gas during inlet pressure changes (consumption of cylinder) • Saves gas during flow changes (noncontinues welding) • Available with connections for most markets in Europe. n

BASF introduces innovative microspherebased admixture technology Microsphere-based admixture technology for freeze-thaw durability eliminates the need for air-entrained concrete

T

he Admixture Systems business of BASF’s North American Construction Chemicals division announced a breakthrough technology for freezethaw durability that eliminates the need for air-entrained concrete. This patent-pending, microspherebased admixture and point-ofuse manufacturing system is being developed to help concrete professionals overcome the challenges traditionally associated with the variability and uncertainty of producing air-entrained concrete.

susceptible to variations in ambient conditions, concreting materials, construction practices and other factors that often impact the air void system in concrete. In addition, the compressive strength of concrete treated with the microspherebased admixture technology can be over 30 percent higher than an airentrained concrete, because of the difference in air content. This results in opportunities to optimize concrete mixtures for performance and sustainability.

Microspheres are extremely small, hollow spheres that have a highly resilient, tough, but flexible, polymeric shell. Similar to entrained air, they provide stress relief zones for the expansion of freezing water within concrete, enhancing its long-term durability.

“Microspheres are manufactured at the producer’s plant to provide consistent, stable performance, every time,” said Paul Seiler, Technology Manager, Admixture Systems for BASF in North America. “They are dispensed and uniformly mixed into concrete at a fixed dosage and are the optimal size for freeze-thaw durability.”

However, unlike traditional air entrainment, microspheres are not

Dry microspheres have been used successfully in Europe for many years in niche concrete applications. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the cost of delivery. The pointof-use manufacturing system BASF has developed makes it economically feasible to use this proven microsphere technology for freeze-thaw durability of concrete. “Up until now, air entrainment has been the state-of-the-art technology for freeze thaw durability of concrete,” said Juan Alfonso Garcia, Vice President, Admixture Systems, for BASF in North America. “But concrete professionals deserve a technology that is more stable and predictable no matter what the environmental conditions may be. ” BASF plans to commercialise the microsphere-based admixture technology in 2015. n

Cold galvanising zinc metal spray: why important? Zinc metal spray is a premium performance epoxy coating which fuses to metal substrates to guard against corrosion - Pradeep Vaidya, Innovative Coating Industries

T

he reason for the extensive use of hot dip galvanising is the two-fold nature of the coating. As a barrier coating, it provides a tough, metallurgically bonded zinc coating, which completely covers the steel surface and seals the same from the corrosive action of the environment. Additionally, sacrificial action of zinc protects steel even where damage or minor discontinuity occurs in the coating.

Why cold galvanising zinc metal spray? For damaged galvanising, corroded and welded galvanised surfaces, cold galvanising by zinc metal spray is an ideal cure. This quick drying, high solids coating provides superb protection to steel and ferrous metals against harsh corrosive environments. Zinc metal spray is a premium performance epoxy coating which fuses to metal substrates to guard against corrosion. This coating constantly fights against rust and corrosion. It is highly resistant to salt water corrosion, does not sag and may be top coated with conventional primers, paints and epoxies. Cold galvanising spray provides the protection of hot dip galvanising plus the convenience of on the job aerosol application. Cold galvanising spray contains 95 per cent pure zinc, forms a tough, durable, zinc metal coating that bonds electrochemically with the base metal to protect against rust and corrosion. Characteristics of cold galvanising zinc metal spray Zinc metal spray offers 99 per cent pure zinc deposit. It has electrochemical

bond and very quick drying, and needs minimum surface preparation. It is also easy, user-friendly application for predespatch inspection stages and on-site use for touch-up. The spray stops rust and corrosion on any iron and mild steel surface, adds corrosion protection to galvanised and welded surfaces. It is extremely useful for indoor/ outdoor use. Efficient spray nozzle minimises drips and runs. Zinc metal spray can be applied over a wide range of temperatures and humidity. Years of protection for structural surfaces eliminates the need for constant scraping, wire brushing, and repainting.

Physical and chemical standards • Zinc contents: 35 to 40 per cent in the formulation • Purity of zinc: 99 per cent pure spray dried vacuum evaporated zinc • Flakes: zinc contents in the DFT 88 - 92 per cent • Colour: greyish and silver finish • Spray cone (spray at 10 - 12 inch distance): 2 to 4 inch cone • Film thickness: 20 - 25 microns • Propellant: hydrocarbon • Salt spray life: over 500 hours of fog chamber salt spray • Test-recommended coats: maximum two coats • Solvent type: non CFC or chlorinated solvents • Resin (carrier/binder): modified acrylic • Touch dry time: 3-5 min • Over coating time: 30 min • Hard dry time: 24 hours • Can shelf life: 1 year • Storage conditions: store the aerosol spray cans in a cool, dry place in cupboard/closed shelf.

Surface preparation Surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and totally free of dust, dirt rust and scales and burnt carbon. Wipe the surface with solvent/thinner (for removal of oil and grease) followed by wire brushing/grinding. Using method Shake the can well for 1 to 2 minutes before spraying. Repeat shaking of can often during application. Wear protective eyewear when spraying. Point spray nozzle away from face. Hold spray can upright about 8 inch -12 inch from surface, apply thin, even coats with consistent back and forth motion. Allow 15 min to dry between coats and 6 hours to dry before top coating. After use, or if spray spatters, turn the can upside down and spray to clean the spray mechanism. Protect surrounding surfaces from over spray. n Contact:

Flooring

PROFILE

Polished concrete: The future of industrial flooring “Even though today polished concrete is being used mainly in industries, warehouses and big retail stores, it is only a matter of time before other applications of this great concept being explored in India,” says Sachin Surie, Marketing Head, Surie Polex Need to understand industrial floors Industrial floors have always been a problematic issue for most industrialists. There are various factors that come into play when designing an industrial floor. These include considerations of the kind of machinery and equipment that will be installed, the usage the floor will be subjected to and the kind of traffic the floor will experience-foot traffic, pallet trucks, forklifts etc. After determining these factors an expert should be consulted to determine the thickness of the floor, the quantity and design of steel reinforcement required and the grade of concrete to be used. Unfortunately, a lack of knowledge and the need to control the overall project costs leads most people to make bad decisions when it comes to choosing the type of concrete floor. It is therefore important to educate clients today about making the right decision when it comes to concrete flooring because it is the hardest to repair in a functioning industry. Floor treatment options for industrial floors Most concrete floors need further treatment depending upon the industry. By their very nature concrete floors have a tendency to release dust. Run your hand over an untreated concrete floor and your palm will come up gray. This release of concrete dust is a result of non-reacted Calcium Hydroxide that is present in the concrete. If left unchecked it leads to the continued deterioration of the concrete floor. Many types of treatments are available for concrete floors but the two main options in India today are:

80

B2B Purchase

March 2014

Dust collector

• Coatings: epoxy, polyurethane etc. • Polished concrete. Coatings have a higher initial cost and also need to be renewed every few years. For renewing coatings they first need to be completely removed and then re-applied. In comparison polished concrete has a lower initial cost and unlike coatings can be easily re-polished as and when required at a much lower cost. The other main factor which goes in favour of polished concrete is that it is “green” and ecofriendly. Coatings are composed of a wide variety of chemicals but polished concrete only requires a water based densifier. The best part is that polished concrete floors are eligible for LEED Ratings.

Polished concrete: the way forward Surie Polex offers a complete range of concrete grinding machines, dust collectors and diamond tools for polishing concrete floors. The entire technology has been developed inhouse and today Surie Polex is the

Waterproofing

PROFILE

MC-Special Plus: integral waterproofing of concrete E

ven in the case of excellent composition and compactness, concrete consists of small voids. The so called “capillary pores (on average 13-16 percent by volume)” are due to a generous addition of mixing water. The additional mixing water is used to obtain sufficient compactness and workability. Owing to these capillary pores, concrete is always more or less pervious to water or hygroscopic. As opposed to conventional waterproofing products, MC-Special Plus provides integral waterproofing properties by combining two characteristics into one specially designed product. The properties that give concrete the extra edge in protection against water ingress are: • Reduction of capillary pores: Special additives in MCSpecial Plus make the concrete more workable (increases slump) at the same w/c ratio or provide a reduction in w/c at the same workability levels. This property helps concrete achieve excellent compactability, thereby reducing capillary pores. • Hydrophobic pore blocking mechanism: In addition to reduction of capillary pores and the Dynamic Sync Crystallization, MC-Special Plus has special additives, which cause contraction of capillaries as well as convert the waterabsorbing capillary forces into water repellent capillary forces due to the hydrophobic effect of the constituent. Thus water is pushed out of the capillary pores, and the concrete is kept dry. A combination of the properties above provide the concrete an efficient, reliable and durable waterproofing protection against rains, ground water, moisture, dampness, humidity etc. MC-Special Plus is an integral waterproofing compound in powder form, used for all types of concrete, requiring water impermeability. It complies with IS 2645.

Advantages Following are a few advantages of using MC-Special Plus as an additive to concrete. • Resists water penetration and absorption • Makes the mix more workable (improves the slump) • Makes the w/c ratio reduction possible • Does not change setting time nor adversely affect the reinforcement • Disperses rapidly and makes a homogenous mix • Free from chlorides • Provides an efficient, durable barrier against rainwater, moisture and ground water. MC-Special Plus is easy to use, either in the concrete batching plant or in a transit mixer at site. MC-Special Plus

NEW LAUNCH

Pumps & Valves

Grundfos India launches new Circulator Pump “MAGNA3 pumps are energy-optimised, flexible and have no maintenance requirements”

G

rundfos India has launched the MAGNA3 circulator pump. The new pumps are designed for circulating liquids in heating systems, domestic hot-water systems and air-conditioning and cooling systems. Designed for commercial hydronic applications, MAGNA3 is an energy‐ optimised, variable-speed wet rotor circulator that features a permanent magnet motor design. It cuts power consumption up to 85 per cent through its innovative AUTOADAPT function which automatically analyses the heating system, finds the optimum setting and then continuously adjust its operation to changes in demand. This also features an in-built energy or heat meter

that not only avoids the need for a separate energy meter but also monitors the system heat energy distribution and consumption. The result is optimum comfort and minimum energy consumption. MAGNA3 is also equipped with the new FLOWADAPT control mode that

reduces the need for pump throttling valves. In addition, MAGNA3 pumps are extremely flexible and reliable, and have low noise levels, long life and no maintenance requirements. They are fitted with radio communication (15 metres from line of sight) and can offer external control and monitoring via expansion modules. Furthermore, wireless connectivity enables handheld pump control and monitoring capabilities by Grundfos GO, a mobile toolbox available on Apple and Android devices. The MAGNA3 range of pumps can also be used for solar-heating systems. Another important feature of MAGNA3 is its GENIair connection (wireless) which helps control the pump/s (up to two pumps connected in parallel). n

INDUSTRY SPEAKS

Lubrizol globalising CPVC plumbing technology T

“Backed by robust research and development capabilities and the technical expertise of piping systems consultants, billions of feet of Lubrizol’s CPVC piping systems have been installed globally,” says Manoj Dhar, Head of TempRite Engineered Polymers, Lubrizol Advanced Materials India Pvt. Ltd.

he Lubrizol Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway company, is a technologydriven global company that combines complex, specialty chemicals to optimise the quality, performance and value of customers’ products while reducing their environmental impact. Headquartered in Wickliffe, Ohio, United States, Lubrizol owns and operates manufacturing facilities in 17 countries, as well as sales and technical offices around the world. Founded in 1928, Lubrizol has approximately 7,500 employees worldwide. Among the technologies it produces and supplies, The Lubrizol Corporation is the innovator and world leader in chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) resins and compounds. Its high performance and low-combustibility CPVC technology can be found in FlowGuard Gold® Pipes and Fittings, BlazeMaster® Fire Sprinkler Systems and Corzan® Industrial Systems designed for a variety of applications including plumbing, fire protection and industrial piping. Backed by robust research and development capabilities and the technical expertise of piping systems consultants, billions of feet of Lubrizol’s CPVC piping systems have been installed globally. Having expanded manifold in India in recent years with its advanced plumbing products and mechanism,

Lubrizol manufactures CPVC compound and sells it to its authorised licensee in India, which makes pipe and fittings that are used in the residential as well as industrial applications. Manoj Dhar talks on the company’s business activities in India and the challenges it faces.

Lubrizol has significant presence in more than 100 countries. How important is the Indian market? Lubrizol has three enduring strategies that have been the foundation for sustainable performance —organic growth, improving operational profitability and efficiencies, and strengthening of our portfolio through complementary acquisitions. Recognising the tremendous growth potential for CPVC resin and compounding products, Lubrizol is committed to supporting the Indian industry with the necessary technology and manufacturing enhancements.

Lubrizol range of pipe and fittings

BlazeMaster fire sprinkler system is a versatile, specified non-metallic sprinkler system option. It also offers corrosion resistance (including resistance to Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion/MIC), superior hydraulics compared to CTS piping products used for plumbing applications, plus high heat tolerances and superior flame and smoke characteristics. Corzan Industrial Systems have turned out to be an elixir for industries like steel, paper and pulp, power, desalination and waste water management. Corzan and Corzan HP industrial piping systems are made from a non-corrosive, durable CPVC technology that makes them chemically inert to most mineral acids, bases and salts, as well as aliphatic hydrocarbons found in industrial applications, including metal finishing, chemical processing, water systems, wastewater treatment.

Are you planning to enhance your manufacturing capabilities in India? With an aim to increase our footprint In India, we are developing a new CPVC compounding plant and a warehouse. The total investment will be about $40 million. We’ll be setting up these plants either in Gujarat or Maharashtra. The CPVC compounding plant in India will be expanded during Phase II, to add extra capacity with an additional investment of $15 million.

What are the challenging Lubrizol faces in CPVC plumbing market in India? Poor infrastructure is blight on Indian economy. On top of it, real estate in India is not organised even though its size is $12bn and grows at 30 per cent per annum. Major challenges faced in plumbing market are slowdown in Indian economy, de-growth of foreign investment in real estate, weak position of Indian rupee against dollar, delay in environmental clearance of projects, hesitation by banks to focus more on home loans to real estate sector and increasing competition from conventional piping systems like GI, PVC, PPRC etc. Lastly, the mushrooming of generic CPVC piping players in the country also poses a challenge. n
