Industry Speaks

Putzmeister strengthens focus in localisation being one step ahead with the ability of our product and innovation. We are basically providing the customers the product they need.

Localisation is more than 80 per cent and it will surely increase. If the volumes increase, we might increase localisation Wilfried Theissen, Managing Director, Putzmeister Concrete Machines India

What is your outlook on the overall scenario of CE industry? It will be changing for betterment. It was a peak time in the year 2010-2011 and last quarter of 2011 it went down, and it kept going down in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Up to September 2014, it’s just left out and not going down anymore. The outlook is somewhat brighter, inquiries are increasing, a lot of equipment are occupied again – showing positive signs. We expect about 10 per cent increase in 2015 as compared to 2014, but still it will be 20 per cent behind from 2011 figures. So we need another 3 years to get back to 2011 figures. We are sure the market will turn back in next 3 years.

Is it for the entire CE segment? It’s concrete as well as road construction. The whole CE manufacturing industry has suffered a lot in last 3 years, so everybody is in hope that it will go up. What about increasing competition? Competition is not increasing – it’s just the number of players. But in turn prices do suffer. Prices in India are absolutely unrealistic. Customers have to accept the prices in future as it is not possible to continue to run with this kind of prices. We have always focused on

8

B2B Purchase

January 2015

What sort of initiatives you have taken to lower the production cost without compromising machines’ quality? During the past 3 years we worked a lot to achieve international quality standard of Germany. We have achieved that in 2012 which has helped us to export our products to Thailand, South Africa, Brazil, and the United States commencing March 2013. Today, export contributes to 30-35 per cent of our turnover and has helped us in achieving sustainability. Are you doing any innovations in the product feature to bring down the cost? Yes, we have done a lot to localisation in our facility located in Goa. We manufacture waste on chemical standards and also worked a lot on our environment like our e-smart machine. We have reduced the quantity for hydraulic oil from 300 litres to 70 litres. Our machines are made lighter and we have used intelligent software systems to monitor the operations. What is the percentage of localisation? Will it increase in future? Localisation is more than 80 per cent and it will surely increase. If the volumes increase, we might increase localisation.

What will be your key strategy to consolidate your position in the Indian market? To consolidate our position in the Indian market, we have to listen to our customers first about their needs. Then we have to increase the number of people using mechanisation. In India, around 80 per cent of the concrete is not pumped which is a big potential area. We need to convince the government that construction industry should not be barred by the RBI because finance is a big obstacle. Construction industry cannot fund itself as it has no credit. The government should also bring in GST to provide ease in logistic. And finally, we need to continue innovate.

What are the USP of your products? Reliability is the major USP of all Putzmeister products. Also, we are one step ahead of the industry in terms of innovation. Our after-sales and support services on pan-India is an added advantage. Are you going to introduce any new technology in the market? We will be introducing a batching plant range during the first quarter of 2015. This is going to be a major innovation as far as Indian market is concerned. We may also launch products like plastering machine and shotcrete machines. n

Ajax Fiori makes concrete sense

Ajax Fiori is the personification of concreting equipment and solutions to help deliver concrete, whenever required of whatever type and wherever required

Ajax Fiori Products

D.K. Narang, Director, Ajax Fiori

As people are talking about the ease of doing business, did the situation really improved? The sentiment in the market has certainly turned positive after new government taking over at the center. A number of initiatives to step up investments in infrastructure have been announced, this should boost the sales of construction equipment. However, we need to wait and watch how the market is behaving in the last quarter of FY 14-15 for assessing the situation. We feel the medium- to long-term growth prospects for CE industry appear quite bright, due to the rightful emphasise by the new government in stepping up investment on various infrastructure projects. Do you feel that PPP is a broken model? The government at the centre has emphasised on the PPP model which is a global practice. It is true that there is promise in the model, which had raised the hopes of the nation, especially in the areas of mega-infrastructural development projects. Due to the slow economy clubbed with restriction of funding by the financing or banking sectors, the PPP model is finding it more difficult to attract investment. Also

10

B2B Purchase

January 2015

careful evaluation to be made from the time of bidding is a key to success for a PPP model. This model is in an infant stage unlike in developed countries. Hence the ups and downs in the market to be considered and all stakeholders should work in tandem to ensure the success of this model.

Talking about Ajax Fiori’s business, how is it going? We take this opportunity to thank our esteemed customers for their continual support to us, despite market sluggishness, Ajax Fiori has shown a growth in the last 3 years and the year 2014 was a memorable one to Ajax Fiori. In June 2014, Ajax Fiori delivered its 5,000th machine from the Doddaballapur facility, a truly landmark achievement. We are committed to deliver cost effective and reliable products to our customers for their concreting needs. Last year, you launched a few products in the batching plant segment. How is the response from market? Ajax Fiori is the personification of concreting equipment and solutions to help deliver concrete, whenever required of whatever type and wherever

required. Ajax Fiori solutions make productivity sense, economic sense and investment sense, in short Ajax Fiori concreting solutions ‘Makes Concrete Sense’. Our self-loading concrete mixer a truly flagship product caters all types of application viz, irrigation, roads and bridges, buildings and industrial foundations to name a few. Our radius lift arm batching plant, a unique design is being well appreciated by customers and finds its application for all concreting needs. We have setup a new manufacturing facility exclusively for batching plant in Gauribidnur, Karnataka which has an initial capacity of producing 300 plants per annum. The response from the market is pretty good and which motivates us to invest on our expansion plans.

Are you open to any merger and acquisition? Ajax Fiori is always looking at widening its offering to its customers. In this direction we are open to considering both organic and as well as inorganic route. n

BKT’s Bhuj plant to be fully operational in 2016 BKT’s plant in Bhuj to be fully operational by third quarter of 2016, to enhance capacity by 75 per cent

B

KT is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of off-highway tyres. The company has wide product range with more than 2,300 SKU’s (Stock Keeping Units) and is has been focused on becoming one stop shop for all off-highway tyre solutions. With more than 25 accomplished years of global leading presence in the offhighway tyres segment, Balkrishna Industries (BKT) is undoubtedly one such company.

Keeping up with demand In the last quarter of this calendar year, BKT saw rise in demand and anticipates it will continue to grow. The company also expects some new announcements from the new government, especially in infrastructure industry. Infrastructure doesn’t mean only to the road building; it could be roads, bridges, power, irrigation and so forth. “As the new government announced that infrastructure is going to be its core sector, the momentum of growth will continue in coming years,” informs Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director, BKT. “We are expecting a growth of about 15 per cent in 2015.”

“We are expecting that the Bhuj plant will be fully operational by third quarter of 2016. It will enhance our total capacity by 75 per cent,” informed Mr Poddar. The company has invested over $ 375 million in this plant. It will add about 120,000 tonnes per year in addition to its 180,000 tonnes obtained from the other three plants.

State-of-the-art products Quality conscious users who adhere to stringent conformity standards in Europe and America prefer BKT as their supplier, thus implying that every BKT product is superior most in creation and delivers expected performance.

BKT’s Bhuj plant Until 2012, BKT had three state-of-theart production plants for manufacturing tires. The production started in 1987 in the landmark Aurangabad plant. In 2001, the company set up its second production site at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.

This is achieved by using the foremost quality of raw materials that are processed through the most advanced technology creating a BKT product. “Each product passes over 450 stages of tests. The result of this rigorous practice being that BKT products are known for their reliability and have the lowest claim ratio in the industry,” informs Mr Poddar.

BKT recently initiated production from its 4th plant at Bhuj, a Greenfield facility in Gujarat. The project complex comprises of about 300 acres of land in the Gujarat region, just a few kilometres away from the Mundra port offering logistical advantages in transport of raw materials.

Construction and mining segment BKT is working hard on the domestic and agriculture industry and built its independent team. In fact, the company has developed two ranges for domestic agricultural applications which included bias as well as radiant. “BKT has already opened in seven states and will be

12

B2B Purchase

January 2015

spreading in more states, slowly but steadily,” adds Mr Poddar.

Driving tomorrow Indian tyre companies are no longer just manufacturing tyres for commercial vehicles but the market has expanded encapsulating high-end consumers with heavy OE needs for industrial, construction and mining purposes. A company like BKT is a huge factor in this growth with its selling chains covering almost the entire world. However, as they say, with great success comes great responsibility. n

We are expecting that the Bhuj plant will be fully operational by third quarter of 2016. It will enhance our total capacity by 75 per cent.

ElectroMech, Zoomlion: complementing each other

E

lectroMech’s expertise in material handling together with Zoomlion’s proven-efficiency in tower cranes is creating a win-win situation for the highrise building construction in India. On the sidelines of bC India, Tushar Mehendale speaks to Subhajit Roy and discusses on this synergy. Excerpts:

There are lots of talks about ‘Acche Din’. How do you look at the real scenario? It is clear that the intent of government is much about increasing business. By the time we start noticing the benefits of it at the ground level, it might take a few more months. We had been cruising through a very bad phase for past three years as the downfall had started in 2010-2011. So people are obviously expecting things to happen very fast. Keeping in mind the way the country was running for past 10 years, things cannot be changed overnight. However, when it comes to visibility of

Key attraction at bC India At bC India, ZoomlionElectroMech displayed the Zoomlion TC 5013-5, an India-specific external climbing hammer head tower crane. Designed specifically for high-rise construction projects, the crane has a 50-metre jib with a 1.3-tonne tip load. The maximum lifting capacity of the crane is 5 tonnes.

the things on the ground, whatever is visible is the euphoria. The sentiments are looking good as stock markets have gone up. To keep momentum going on, the government needs to go on.

Now the government is promoting ‘Make in India’ whereas RBI Director is advocating ‘Make for India’... It is just the playing with words. People should not get carried away in ‘Make in India’ or ‘Make for India’. In fact, ‘Make in India’ is there for years because the multinational companies have been coming and manufacturing in India. For example, many of the automobile companies have come and set up their plants in India earlier. They are manufacturing in India and exporting to the rest of the world. There are many capital goods and power equipment companies as well. Thus things have already been happening here. It is just a rebranding exercise and something to spur the industry. Because previous government was only into the talking business and this government is taking some steps proactively in addition to it. As it is putting the efforts into the positive manner to spur the people, to move on and do something, the picture looks good today. However, one should not be so sceptical at the same time. We have become sceptical from the past experience; but we should keep some slag for the new government and hope that it will do something.

How is your JV with Zoomlion doing? The JV is doing good; we have got a new fraction in market. People have recognised Zoomlion tower cranes as superior products. In fact, Zoomlion today is the leading manufacturer of tower cranes with one of the biggest range available. It has played significant role in building the infrastructure of China which is renowned for the scale of projects and timeliness with a squeezed timeline. In India the size of infrastructure is small compared to international standards. If we want to make India a developed country, the size of the infrastructure has to be implemented and the required timeline should be framed. Zoomlion’s experience in China will help a lot when it comes to our offerings to the Indian customers.

ElectroMech is experienced in material handling and Zoomlion is dealing in tower cranes. Where is the synergy? Synergy is in both – in cranes as well as in material handling. Our major customers are from infrastructure industry. So we have got overlap on the customer side. Also when it comes to the product side there is much overlap on the way the product is manufactured. All structural fabrication, electrical sections and metallic components are even similar. As there is a huge amount of synergy in both, more or less the product category remains the same. n

L&T joined hands with Kemco from Japan to offer a complete range of sand making solutions that can produce superior river quality engineered sand without impacting rivers and ecological systems L&T-Kemco’s e7 Sand Plant

L&T displayed advanced sand manufacturing solutions L &T’s Kansbahal Business Unit, a part of L&T’s Metallurgical and Material Handling business, displayed a complete range of crushing solutions at bC India.

L&T’s track record in crushing and screening extends to over four decades. The company enjoys a dominant market share for limestone crushing in the cement industry. Its limestone crushing plant installations are supplied across more than 90 per cent of major cement plants in India. Its large crusher installation base caters to coal crushing as well in different applications in mining, coal washery, power plants etc. L&T has also supplied many stationary, semi-mobile and now mobile crushers also for different mineral applications including aggregate crushing in construction sector. Another popular product from Kansbahal is L&T’s indigenously developed surface miners used across Indian coal mines and also some limestone mines.

Focus on ‘manufactured sand’ In addition to displaying crushing and

16

B2B Purchase

January 2015

surface mining product range, L&T’s intent of participation in bC India show was to showcase its ‘advanced sand manufacturing solutions’. It is widely known that good quality river sand is scarce in India. On the other hand, manufactured sand in the country continues to be at a nascent stage of development. Current methods being adopted in India can address just one part of sand quality i.e. removal of unwanted ultra-fines by ‘wet’ or ‘dry’ processes. Two major aspects of good quality sand continue to remain unattended – the shape and the gradation (or fineness modulus). These quality aspects therefore continue to drive the need and prices of river quality sand. L&T recently joined hands with Kemco from Japan, one of the world leaders in sand manufacturing technology. With this arrangement, L&T now manufactures, supplies and services a complete range of sand manufacturing solutions starting from dry air classification (air screens) to the revolutionary ‘e7 sand manufacturing

system’. This enables the company to meet the increasing demand for superior quality sand for construction. With these L&T-manufactured systems, Indian construction industry can now produce engineered sand at par with superior river quality sand without impacting the country’s rivers and ecological systems.

Improving sand quality Manufactured sand is made from crusher dust (0-5 mm size). Such dust typically produced by jaw or cone or even regular VSIs is angular and flaky shaped, and has gradation which is a mix of coarser particles on one end (2.5 mm-5 mm) and too fine particles (ultrafines < 150 microns) on other end. The intermediate useful particle size range content in the gradation (150 microns to 2.5 mm) is generally lower than required as compared to standards and hence have high fineness modulus. The ‘e7 advanced sand manufacturing system’ precisely ensures these most desirable aspects of premium quality sand: sizing and shaping of +2.5 mm to 5 mm to finer desired gradation by a special crusher 18

called Vertipact and cleaning of ultrafines and ensuring the top size of product by closed-circuit air-screening. The Vertipact has unique 5-port rotor design along with hammers to ensure breaking and shaping of smaller particles (2.5-5 mm) and air-screen is a technological masterpiece for performing the dual function of screening of sand at low cut points to achieve desired fineness modulus and removal of ultra-fines by optimised air flow. The blower and dust collector work in tandem with air screen through an automated system. The engineered sand thus produced with equi-dimensional shape, right gradation and free-from-ultrafines. When compared to conventionally manufactured sand, it helps to improve workability or flow-ability of concrete, reduce water and cement consumption, improve strength and finish of concrete. This is why good river sand quality (addressing all these critical aspects of concreting and plastering) comes at such a highpremium today.

Market prospects and demand The requirement is in excess of a billion tonnes every year going by industry estimates and proportions of cement consumption. The scarcity of good quality river sand and non-availability of good quality manufactured sand has created a very difficult situation for the construction industry. It must be borne in mind that some of the river sands available also do not meet the desired standards and have high percentage of silt and oversize material. One has no control on such naturally occurring sands. The construction industry is therefore left with no other option but to pay a huge premium for river sand or end up doing poorer quality construction. With such scenario, it is obvious that quality conscious construction companies are looking at superior options to manufacture river quality sand economically. To cater to even 5 per cent of total sand requirement in India, there will be hundreds of such sand plants required which have typically 60 tonnes to 100 tonnes per hour capacity.

L&T and Kemco collaboration It is a technical collaboration where design knowledge of these sand solutions is shared with L&T by Kemco. The manufacturing of complete plants will be done indigenously by L&T in India as per technical know-how from Kemco. L&T will guarantee the performance of the product and provide service support to all its clients. L&T will have exclusive rights for marketing these products in India, Gulf and African countries. L&T is also planning to set up a test sand plant for testing of different materials to produce engineered sand to deliver comprehensive solution in this segment. Focus regions The sand markets are mature in Western and Southern regions in India where construction Industry have already adopted to manufactured sand and continuously looking for improvements in this segment. However, L&T does not intend to limit its marketing efforts in these select regions. The need for sustainable future is true for whole of India. The nonavailability of river sand is going to be reality very soon and everywhere. Boost for quality construction With L&T’s advanced sand manufacturing solutions, quality conscious construction companies do not need to compromise on sand quality while contributing their bit to sustain future of India’s rivers. Though, L&T will cater to all sub-segments of sand manufacturing market, its focus however will continue to be to educate customers to embrace technologically advanced solutions to produce ‘engineered sand’ fit for the purpose. n

How safe your Hoist are? We are manufacturing construction hoists for more than 50 years and we never had safety-related accidents on them when the hoists are operated properly. Our major customers are from the US, Canada and Russia where safety standards are very high and of utmost priority. So, safety is one of the major features of our hoists and we pay due attention to it. We ensure the same kind of attention from Esquire. What are major safety features your hoists have? Every motor of our hoists are equipped with brakes which are capable enough to hold a hoist in its position when fully loaded. So if we have two drives in a construction hoist there are two independent brakes each one is capable of holding a hoist in case of power failure or any such incidence. If due to some unexpected both the brakes fail, though it never happens,

there is a TUV certified safety device designed by Stros, which is patented. It will slowly stop the hoist and prevent it from falling.

Are you going to manufacture this safety device in India? Safety device is one of the machines which will not be manufactured in India. We’ll also import our pinions and rollers from Czech Republic because we realised that customers in India have big issues of higher material consumption on rollers. Pinions and rollers are replaced in every 3-4 months which is very difficult to perform at construction site. So we’ll provide our pinions which have longer life span of around 3,000 working hours. Usually, in US, our customers replace their pinions or rollers in 3-4 years period. This is a big saving for end-users as it reduces replacement and downtime. At bC India, Defence Minister visited your stall and talked about the

products for defence. What are the products Stros has for defence? We are manufacturing special purpose elevators which are used in dry docks for providing the maintenance and uploading materials to the submarines. This is industrial elevator based on the mobile platform which allows travel based hoists in dry docks to move in different positions which is necessary for maintenance of submarines. We have developed such platforms for the Royal Navy and they are using for last 5 years satisfactorily. Apart from these, we make elevators for many other applications and are being used around the world. One of the most prestigious customers we have is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which have our industrial elevators on rocket launching towers. Most recently, our elevator was used for launching of Korean rocket. n

How do you represent Magni in India? We are the sole distributors for India, SAARC countries and middle-east. Apart from the tele-handler range Magni also has a special range for boat handler and also for working on the palm trees. How innovative is the 35-metre telehandler? RTH 5.35 by Magni intends to offer the highest working height among the rotating telescopic handlers, reaching a maximum height of 35 metres with a load capacity of 2.2 tonnes. Despite its massive performances, it remains a very compact machine being built on a chassis just 15 cm longer than the one of the RTH 5.30; which has been reinforced to sustain the machine in all the strains due to the lifting process. What is really innovative and original is the boom construction; it is made of 6 sections and 2 extension cylinders, both positioned on the outer side of the boom leaving more free space on the inside for hoses and pipes. This solution is optimal hoses are protected inside the boom and are not exposed to hits or accidental damages. The internal hoses are of two types, six-glued hoses and four-glued hoses which eliminate the problem of friction in their movements or to the problem of twisting.

The perforated structure of the boom’s element contributes to the performance of the machine in terms of capacity and allows reaching 2,200 kg of lifting capacity at the maximum height.

SDLG India: adding a new dimension

We have developed our own brand of lubricants, gear oil and engine oil that meets our specifications.

SDLG stall at bC India

I

dentifying the need for trusted maintenance products to support its growing machine population, SDLG has launched a range of oils and lubricants at bC India. In an exclusive interview with Subhajit Roy, B Sridhar talks about this new dimension.

What was your purpose of launching lubricants in India? The purpose of launching lubricants in India basically is to support the aftermarket and the customers. This launch will offer them a complete range of engine, hydraulic and transmission oils that are designed especially for SDLG machines. Today customers are buying different brands of oil and most of the time it does not match to our machines’ requirement. Therefore we have developed our own brand of lubricants, gear oil and engine oil that meets our specifications. The product is locally developed and refined in Mumbai.

How different it is going to be from the existing range of lubricants of other brands? The existing lubrication specifications

26

B2B Purchase

January 2015

are based on general equipment. So what is needed for the tier 3 engines like VDS 3 and other specifications have been incorporated in this oil to meet our equipment standards. It will benefit the customers as the wear and tear of the internal components will be less and it will meet the internal chemical component which meets our machines’ specifications. It also enhances the life span of the components and the equipment. We will market it through our existing chain of dealers.

What kind of marketing strategy do you have to promote this range of lubricants? Marketing strategy is simple as we advise our customers to use our lubricants to enhance the life of their equipment. Today some components come with 6,000 to 8,000 hours of life span and by using a genuine lubricant one can enhance the life span to 9,000 to 12,000 hours, thus it is a value addition for the customers. Our marketing aim will deliver genuine oil to our customers and derive the full output from the product. We had launched the oil earlier in China and it is well accepted over there. However, in the global market we have launched it for the first time.

B Sridhar, Business Head, SDLG India

What kind of volume you are looking at? We have our technicians and services employed wherever our machines are working. So the only gap was the lubricants which we have fulfilled by launching it now. We are not just launching the oil we will also be testing the oil at our labs. Hence in case of any failure, we will come to know if any component is running unevenly. It will help us come to a conclusion whether to stop an engine and do some repair. The pricing will also be at competitive market prices only. Volume is based on operation and the usage of the machine. Today, we feel that if we combine all India volume it is 12-14 kl. Stocks are already available with all our dealers.

Where do you develop this lubricant? We have developed the product in Mumbai with our co partner GS Caltex. There are no investments made yet. Despite the proprietorship with it, the brand will be with us. There is no third party involved as the lubricants will be sold by our chain of dealers only. n

Quest Informatics launches new software for CE industry

We launched Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) and Bay Management System (BMS) the two new software products at bC India.

Satheesh Srinivasa, Managing Director, Quest Informatics

Mr Satheesh, did you launch any new product at bC India? Yes, we launched Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) and Bay Management System (BMS) the two new software products at bC India. EPC enhances the reach of catalogue as it can be accessed from anywhere from any device or gadget and enables easy maintenance and updation of the catalogue. Whereas BMS helps in efficiently plan work shop resources and manage prompt deliveries. EPC can be deployed on PDF, CD or Web. How do you see the demand of such solutions? We see that there is a lot of requirement in the manufacturing companies are looking to efficiently manage their workshop activity, on how do they keep their customers happy, and how they keep customers informed on the status of service. BMS will enable them to have control on every stage of service. Could you name some of your major clients? We are working with Volvo across the

process of customers reaching out to OEMs and get their problems addressed. That’s where our solutions come into play.

What are the USPs of your products? Our products are unique and positioned to service our customers specifically in aftermarket segment. Our products are built with strong business process and hence our implementation is simple, less time consuming and saves significant implementation costs. Our products can work in tandem with other legacy systems. The products can be licensed owned or bought as Software as Service (SaaS) on cloud. Our products can manage multiple organisation layers including warehouses, dealers and dealer branch apart from regions, countries or geographies etc. All our products are built with high intelligence and thus reduce user time of filling data. For instance any complaint or enquiry can be registered in less than a minute. The products are enabled to work with Mobile SMS, Mobile Devices, GPS and RFID devices.

How beneficial are solutions for CE players? One of the key aspects is discrepancies in their goods while they are managing inventory. This is also a revenue leakage area as far as construction equipment companies are concerned. We are working towards efficient solutions through RFID to minimise such discrepancies, we have already worked on a prototype to address this. n

How much the CE industry contributes to your business? We get reasonable revenues from construction equipment industry. In India, customers are increasingly looking to adopt aftermarket products. Construction equipment players are eager to take advantage of aftermarket revenues which significantly improves their revenues and bottom lines in difficult market situation. We are definitely looking at this opportunity. Why more and more OEMs should implement such solutions? So far India was a selling market – manufacturers were more focused towards selling. But today they are increasingly looking at revenues from aftermarket. Apart from this our products help OEMs in servicing their customers rightly in the first attempt and eases the

Wirtgen to set up a new plant in Pune for screening machine

We are putting up a new plant for screening machine in Pune investing around ` 80 crores

Ramesh Palagiri, Managing Director & CEO, Wirtgen India

Mr Palagiri, how do you see the current scenario? There are clear signs of improvement, even for customers also. Especially for the road sector, clear signs of revival have been seen and within 3-6 months of time we can really see things improving. The government has taken right decisions to go ahead and award more EPC contracts. Almost 40 tenders are expected to be opened up by end January. All these projects are going to take off in the next 3-6 months. Thus we are witnessing definite signs of revival and getting ready for the growth phase.

Wirtgen stall at bC India

Now that GST is almost through, how will this make an impact? GST will definitely help the industry by simpler taxation. It will also help in the development of rental industry. Machines can move freely from one state to another which has been a problem. The government is also doing away with the clearances to expand roads from 2 to 4 and 6 lanes. Policies are being made simpler and faster for land acquisition. Most of the bottlenecks which had earlier stopped the growth of the road sector are getting removed. From BOT they have moved to EPC, thus they are trying to make land acquisition simpler. Do you think that PPP was a failure? Most important thing is funding of infrastructure projects. We have to go back to PPP projects as the government is having limited funds. The only problem here was the contractors did very aggressive bidding. A lot of projects were not viable, in turn the land acquisition got delayed and project cost went up. In the past 4-5 years there is a clear shift in technology as far as road building is concerned... Wirtgen has been a pioneer as far as road building and road rehabilitation technologies are concerned and we have already introduced the milling and recycling in the past few years. Milling is well accepted in India as we have more

than 100 milling machines in the country now and this market is going to grow now.

What are your expectations from the Kleemann launch? At bC India we have launched EVO series of Kleemann crushing and screening plants. Kleemann has got more than 130 years of experience in crushing and screening industry. When Wirtgen group took over Kleemann in 2006, it was having expertise in quarry line. In the past few years we have developed the EVO series of contractor line which we call the new revolution of crushers. Our focus is on productivity and fuel consumption. These machines are doing well in Germany. With better productivity and fuel consumption, Kleemann range of products should be able to compete in the market. Is this product available in the Indian market? We will be offering the screens in India from 1st of April. We are putting up a new plant for screening machine in Pune investing around ` 80 crores. On 27th March we are having the inauguration of the plant. In April the first screening machine will roll out. How was the year 2014? What is your outlook for 2015? Though the overall market was down, it has been a good year for Wirtgen India. We have launched the Kleemann compactors 3 years back and now we are in the growth phase as the product is also doing well. This year we will be delivering 450 machines in the domestic market. Business has improved to about 20 per cent and this year we expect to end up with ` 400 crores. The outlook for 2015 has been very good. Customers are quite positive with the approach. There are a lot of things to do especially with the improvement in the road and mining sectors. We are also working on new products. n January 2015

Aquarius joins hands with Elematic Are you going to provide similar solutions for defence forces? As of now we are not focusing on this. We will surely do it in future.

At bC India 2014, we announced a tie-up with Elematic Oy, a Finnish world leading manufacturer of precast concrete plants and production lines for walls, floors and frames

A V Dikshit, Director, Aquarius Engineers

Defence Minister had visited your stall at bC India and talked about the construction technology for difficult terrains. What would you like to say on this regard? While developing border roads it becomes difficult to take bigger size vehicles. So the concrete plants have to be designed for the trucks to take in such difficult terrains. The Minister also talked about high-altitude, low-temperature applications where the plants have to work on the higher altitude as the oxygen content is less and temperatures are low. On both these counts we have supplied our machines, but not for defence forces.

What is your current focus? At bC India 2014, we announced a tie-up with Elematic Oy, a Finnish world leading manufacturer of precast concrete plants and production lines for walls, floors and frames. Could you explain us about this partnership? We have signed a co-operation agreement for development and supply of batching and mixing plants for the precast industry. Elematic will provide its state-of-the-art technology to Aquarius for manufacturing of twinshaft mixers and tower batching plants. Elematic will also include Aquarius’s batching and mixing plants into their offering for the Indian market and later on for selected markets globally. So this is a win-win situation for both. Our plants have been proved successful for their extruders whereas their extruders have a market demand in the precast applications. How do you see the demand of precast solutions? Precast will definitely pick up because people have realised its advantages. If the government needs to realise its target of developing mass housing projects, then the time and number of units that have to come out are never going to match without precast application. Even the married accommodation for defence forces can be a potential area. Our new tower batching plant solution will offer great value to precast factories and ready-mix companies, working in the fast growing metro cities. Thanks to its compact size, the plant installation uses fairly small area, thus bringing clear savings in land costs. Another significant benefit is that the complete set-up will be environmentfriendly and also avoids sound pollution.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurating a machine at Aquarius stall during bC India

30

B2B Purchase

January 2015

By when the market should pick-up? Today market is peaking up, but there

is a serious liquidity crunch. The newly formed state governments are yet to come with their budgets. Central government has to come with the proper budget statement by February. So I think by next financial year the market should pick-up.

Being an Indian company what are the disadvantages you face? Being an Indian company, easy finance is the biggest problem for us. No matter where you work, as an Indian company dealing with Indian banks and getting finance is always a challenge. What about the advantages? Advantage is that we enjoy our job. We are into the Indian market and are really proud of that. This is more important aspect as we are not working for a foreign company. We are working for ourselves and contributing to the nation building. We are doing the good work even on a global level. And that goes with ‘Make in India’… Yes, that’s completely correct. ‘Make in India’ makes a lot of good sense. It means foreign companies can come to India but they have to make it in India.

New launch Aquarius has launched the highcapacity concrete pumps range. This range will feature pumps, viz.1410 D and 1400 HPD+, with a dual advantage – higher reach in vertical pumping blended with high pumping output. The new launched concrete batching plant, model MP 19 will provide a site based solution for production of quality concrete. The plant has a high-quality planetary mixing technology with facility of discharge into the concrete pump directly, facilitating quick placement of concrete. The plant is equipped with the state-ofthe-art microprocessor-based control system - SMART minimising overhead costs for the user.

Shyam Gyanani, Director, Trident International (P) Ltd.

T

rident International specialises in the design, development and distribution of specialty tyres and wheels for industrial, construction and off-highway applications. In an exclusive interview, Shyam Gyanani gives an overview on the latest industry trends.

Do you think that the government is doing enough to promote domestic manufacturing? It is very early to form an opinion on this; the government has made a good start by declaring intent to increase the manufacturing in India. It is very important because manufacturing as a percentage of GDP in India is very low, between 1415 per cent. In a country like Thailand it is 30 per cent while in China it is 33 per cent. If we are able to increase manufacturing, there will be benefits across the industry and the country as a whole. Why there is such a huge setback in the field of manufacturing?

32

January 2015

We have had legal issues and things have not been established in a proper systematic manner. There is a need to change this mindset. Now we are seeing some announcements being made by the government. For example, if certain renewals and approvals process not responded within 3 working days it is deemed to be as allotted. These are very small steps and many more such steps need to be taken and implemented. We need plans and policies to be executed in an effective way.

Your business is directly related with the growth of the mining sector. The mining sector has not been doing well. So what helps you to keep the momentum going? Our products are used in mining and infrastructure projects and both the sectors are affected. We do not just sell products but we provide solutions to solve problems. We approach the problems differently and hence most of our products or solutions are quite unique to Indian market. We integrate and offer our solutions at a single point. Therefore our business is growing despite the present challenges in mining. In the next few years once the concept are accepted and people have a better understanding of what we are trying to do, then there will be a link to the broader business momentum.

How difficult it is to compete with your competitors? We don’t have an issue to compete. However, we basically have to compete with the mindset of our customers. To help them understand and appreciate the benefits and value our solutions deliver.

Trident’s foam filled tyres

What is your major target – OEM or end-user? Our natural customer base would be the end-users and our solutions cannot be deployed through a dealer network. We have to be in direct contact with the end-users. To develop a solution or solve a problem we need to know what the problem is. Our products are application specific and meant for severe duty service, therefore the OEMs need to advise us the application/service conditions to enable us offer a suitable solution.

Will you continue with the end-users segment or try for OEMs in future? We do engage with OEMs when they are developing a new product or when they have certain issues. We are in contact with a major OEM who is developing a new product for use in rough terrains. Thus we are already in touch with them and understood the concept. They have also placed a trial order to us. How do you compete with pricing? Pricing in India has always been a challenge but now there is a growing awareness of TCO (total cost of ownership) as against the concept of price, the customers are becoming more aware of the implications of the downtime, higher maintenance and safety. These are the things which certainly become more important in the minds of customers. n

R

esidential buildings form major market for aluminium formwork in India. Though there is some slowdown in this segment, replacement of traditional formwork by aluminium formwork has ensured growth of the industry. In 2014, MFE Formwork sold 35 per cent more formwork than the previous year. In an interview, Ketan Shah talks about the company’s future plans.

Do you think after the new government has come in things have really changed? Though sentiment has changed for sure, it has not translated in to actual growth so far. The construction industry is predicted to do well because government has ambitious plan to provide housing for all by 2022. With entry of reputed corporate houses like Tata, Mahindra and Godrej, considerable affordable housing projects will kickoff across the country.

Proman to set up a new factory near Bengaluru

P

ROMAN, one of the leading players in the crushing and screening segment, is expanding its production capacities by building up a new factory near Bengaluru. The company is investing around ` 15 crores for this purpose. In an interview with B2B Purchase, R.S. Raghavan talks about the company’s future plans.

How do you look at opportunities from projects like smart cities and other infrastructure projects? Yes, highways and infrastructure projects are going to be the key for our company’s growth. We are also expecting the exports to the countries in the Middle East, Africa and America so that we will be able to grow much better. Do you think the Indian government is taking enough efforts to encourage Indian manufacturers to set up a manufacturing unit or facilitate export outside India? I don’t think the government is doing enough except for the initiative for ‘Make in India’. Even if this is done in a proper way by giving the right kind of support in terms of clearances, it will help us a lot. However, manufacturing in India has a long way to go and there is huge potential. We are waiting for GST to be in action also as we have learned that it is going to be implemented from the 1st April 2016. How do you see the shift in technology in the past few years when there was a downturn in the industry? In crushing and screening equipment a lot of people depend on solutions and they look for quality and reliable equipment. People have also realised that it is not necessary to import the equipment. The companies like ours focus on to get the best collaboration and technology and make the best

equipment here in India. We even export products to other countries. Customers have built up trust and we have been able to deliver with their expectations with good quality and reliable products.

How did you perform in the overseas markets? We worked with our partners like Ramco in the US. It has now become our distributor for our other products like jaw crushers and cone crushers. We worked in close cooperation and developed the product and based on that we launched it on a global platform in March 2014 at Las Vegas. We have been doing our exports in Middle East, Africa and America. About 25 per cent of our turnover is exports. We have opened up the product line like jaw crushers, cone crushers, screens and complete plant systems. These are the things which we have started exporting back to the US. How many dealers and distributors you have? Ramco has 18 dealers and it will be distributing through its dealers. It has done well for our products in North and South America. We have dealers in New Zealand, Middle East and also started selling in Africa. We would like to open some more markets this year. In the neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka we are working with some customers where things might happen. As the market is yet to open up, what kind of strategies do you have to capture the market? We are getting geared to manufacture equipment as per international standards. We are also putting in the systems in terms of complete plant like conveyors and hoppers and to do most of the work through our trusted and certified vendors along with in-

house services depending upon the load. We are expanding our production capacities by building up a new factory near Bengaluru which will be ready within a year. We have already started our fabrication unit which we had inaugurated recently. For our big equipment and heavy assembly there is a new factory coming up.

How much you are going to invest for the new facility? We will be investing around ` 15 crores to build the required infrastructure. Having our own technology we will be able to make bigger machines at greater volumes. We are also looking for some tie-ups which we are working on. Complementing our existing range of crushing and screening to the infrastructure and mining industry, we would also be working on material handling and screening machines. n

Creating the truck of the future

With a design that slopes slightly forward and a rebellious grille, it is reminiscent of a racehorse at the starting gate, ready to take the world by storm. Which is precisely what it is! We are talking about Volvo Trucks’ next truck generation – the new Volvo FH Series.

1

9 years. That is how long it is since Volvo Trucks last launched an entirely new truck generation. It was 1993 and the trucks were the Volvo FH12 and FH16. The series was an immediate success and, one year later, it was chosen as the prestigious Truck of the Year. The Volvo FH has been the obvious choice for many truck customers for many years. It goes without saying that Volvo Trucks has not simply been sitting back, doing nothing, since 1993. It has instead remained at the cutting edge when it comes to product development by continuously improving its trucks. This has included making a number of updates to the Volvo FH Series and developing the driveline; it has

44

B2B Purchase

January 2015

become both more powerful and more environmentally sustainable over the years. One of the main challenges when it comes to creating an entirely new

truck generation was to make a new truck that was even more unique than the old Volvo FH and took product development to a totally new level.

Feature

Commercial Vehicle

Another design target has been to ensure that the new Volvo FH Series sends a powerful message.

“We have had a long journey with the current Volvo FH Series, which has been the subject of a number of successful face-lifts and has thereby maintained its competitiveness,” says Claes Nilsson, President Volvo Trucks. He adds, “The only way forward has been to develop something that is even more outstanding. We want to be able to offer our customers the chance to share in the future and the new Volvo FH Series enables us to do precisely that”. From the beginning, the target was to create the truck of the future, a revolution in the industry, and the journey from the drawing-board to the finished truck has been comprehensive. It is not simply a question of moving from A to B. It has instead been an adventure-filled expedition through a jungle of different parameters, all of which have required detailed attention. “We started the product planning for the new Volvo FH Series back in 2003. This initially focused on studies of the business environment and analysing future developments in the transport industry, together with future customer requirements and legal standards,” explains Staffan Rödjedal, product

manager for the development of the new Volvo FH Series. He says that the Volvo Group’s core values – environmental care, safety and quality – have naturally inspired the guidelines throughout the project, but that one factor has ultimately played by far the most important role: the customer. It has been a question of building a truck for the people who are going to use it. The starting point when Volvo Trucks began developing the new Volvo FH Series was to ask customers exactly what they needed and wanted in a truck. “We can only dream of having the same amount of knowledge drivers have. They are the experts. That’s why it was so important to obtain their input at an early stage in the project. Among other things, drivers tested different entry solutions, mirror designs, storage, beds and mattresses, lighting and driver’s environments. We then took the best concepts, the ones that obtained the highest rankings from our customers, and incorporated them in the new truck,” says Staffan Rödjedal. Using a functional design solution in which the rearview mirror housing has been removed, freeing up the glass to be fitted on slender arms, visibility – and thereby safety – has been significantly improved. “Another illustration of function is the way our designers have collaborated with aerodynamic experts to produce a truck which, even if it has a larger cab, generates as little air resistance as possible. This is essential for low fuel consumption,” explains Rikard Orell.

The most important change to the design of the new Volvo FH Series relates to the A pillars. They are now upright, increasing the size of the cab by not less than one cubic metre. This change is yet another illustration of the functional design of the truck, as a larger living area and more storage were clear-cut requests from customers. During the design process, the customer was also the focal point. To begin with, customers were asked to test wooden models, so-called “mock-ups”, and test vehicles in which different new components had been incorporated in the current Volvo FH Series, after which they also had the chance to test and evaluate finished prototypes. “We have also conducted a number of field tests with the truck at our customers, in which they have driven the new series in commercial traffic. All the input from them has then been followed up and improvements have been made as the project progressed,” says product manager Staffan Rödjedal. An enormous test programme has been conducted at the same time. The service life and reliability of the Volvo FH Series have, for example, undergone quality tests in shaking rigs, extreme environments and climates of different types. The new truck series has also undergone safety tests to verify that its structure is reliable. This has included 1,000 simulations, 200 component tests and 50 sleigh tests. The most comprehensive test is known as a fullscale test, which is conducted more than 25 times. “There is absolutely no question that the drivers have helped to design their new working equipment and home. Many drivers live and sleep in their trucks more than five nights a week, so they know what’s important for them to enjoy work and do a good job. In all, we spoke to almost 900 drivers.” January 2015

Commercial Vehicle

Feature “This is a world first in the truck industry and the new Volvo FH Series is definitely going to make us world leaders,” says Martin Palming, as he describes the road holding offered by the new truck series.

Volvo Trucks’ design team, with Rikard Orell at the helm, played a key role in this process. Because designing this truck has focused equally on function and aesthetics. “In the safety tests, we crash a complete truck and test everything, absolutely everything – from the way the exterior, interior and electrical systems are affected to how the crash dummy is protected,” explains Carl Johan Almqvist, Traffic and Product Safety Director Volvo Trucks. “These tests show that, with the new Volvo FH Series, we have reduced both penetration in the cab and the driver’s risk of sustaining knee injuries,” he adds. It is, however, important to point out that Volvo Trucks has always conducted extremely active safety programmes, even when it has not been involved in launching a totally new truck generation. Since 1969, Volvo has had its own Accident Research Team which investigates accidents that occur in

real-life traffic situations. The aim is to evaluate how and why accidents take place, with the aim of reducing them. Carl Johan Almqvist believes that a great deal of progress has now been made. “Safety has been part of Volvo since day one and it is one of our most important core values. This new truck is totally outstanding when it comes to safety. I often say that it is a driver’s dream. This is what a truck should be like,” says Carl Johan Almqvist. Two of the most important results from the drivers’ clinics are clearly related to safety and one of the main requests from the drivers has related to the design of the instrument panel. “When you drive, you want all the commands, all the switches and all the levers to be readily accessible. They have to be in front of you, so that you never need to take your eyes off the road. The instrument panel in the new Volvo FH Series has been optimised to match these needs,” explains Carl Johan Almqvist. The road performance of the vehicle – in other words, the way the driver perceives the truck and the way it handles different situations on the road, such as ruts and corners – is another aspect of safety. The improvements and optimisation relate to the front-wheel suspension, rear-wheel suspension, cab suspension, engine suspension and steering geometry – in fact, everything that could have an impact on road performance. This has been achieved without compromising on Volvo Trucks’ world-leading comfort.

46

January 2015

Another key factor for Volvo Trucks has been to develop a fuel-efficient truck. One of the most important new features in is context is I-See, an auto-didactic system that complements the intelligent I-Shift transmission. This system streamlines up- and downhill driving, which can reduce fuel consumption by as much as five per cent. “You could say that I-Shift has now been given eyes,” says Anders Eriksson, an engineer at Group Trucks Technology, who has been responsible for developing I-See. “The first time a route is driven, I-See registers its topography and, when the truck then covers the same route again, this stored information is used to check the vehicle speed, gear selections and auxiliary brakes. In this way, the energy generated by the truck is used in a more fuel-efficient way,” explains Anders Eriksson. Lars Mårtensson, head of environmental affairs at Volvo Trucks, thinks that both I-See and a new Volvo FH Series combine to produce a huge step in the right direction. “Our vision is sustainable transport and we can see that haulage company owners, their customers and society as a whole are also working towards similarly challenging environmental targets. With the new Volvo FH Series, we are on the right track and we shall be able to give our customers a competitive advantage as they strive to realise their own objectives. So it’s good for the environment and good for business,” says Lars Mårtensson. “This is the true definition of teamwork. We would never have been able to develop the world’s best truck, which I am convinced this is, if we had not had such skilled employees who feel the same burning enthusiasm for their work and for the product,” he says. n

When used as a support beam for a scaffolding structure, podium or roof structure, the Allround bridging system is connected to the structure above it by using Allround standards integrated into the top. Using the wedge-heads welded onto the sides, even suspended scaffolding structures can be connected, or several bridging units can be connected next to one another for a further increase in the load bearing capacity. When a footbridge is built, the Allround bridging system is connected to Allround standards using the wedgeheadsprovided on the sides of the posts. Depending on application, either event decks or steel decks can be used. The bridge can also be clad using Layher Protect cassettes and roofed. The bridge is mounted on Layher heavy-duty supports with specially designed support elements. These support elements permit pre-assembly on the ground and subsequent insertion by crane, which is a major advantage when spanning bridges across roads.

Application of Layher Allround bridging systems to access station Refurbishing work with ongoing operation: after demolition of the existing bridge, a temporary bridge solution was needed to allow passengers to cross the tracks safely. This is where the flexibility of Layher’s Allround equipment came into its own. With the Allround bridging system, efficient building was possible not just of two free-standing bridges, its rapid assembly: the combination with the Allround construction kit also permitted integration of a stairway structure plus a wheelchair ramp for unimpeded access. India’s first prefab health centre comes up in Bihar

A

CME has commissioned India’s first prefabricated health centre at Gaya District in Bihar. The Mehkar health centre is built in three months using the prefabrication technology. The hospital bed per 1,000 population ratio in India is barely 1.3, significantly lower than the other BRIC economies and the WHO guideline of 3.5 beds per 1,000 population. In India, the healthcare infrastructure constitutes about 70 per cent of the overall sectoral expenditure and this highlights the need for fast and efficient healthcare infrastructure in India. Offering a solution to this challenge, Samir Sharan, Chief Executive Officer, ACME said, “The prefabrication technology is the key to India’s infrastructure development and 52

we hope that its immediate adoption shall help the country heap in savings in terms of time and money. The first prefabricated Health Centre set-up at Bihar is a model infrastructure for the infrastructure players to emulate and help in nation-building while cutting down carbon footprint.” The use of prefabrication technology in comparison with the conventional methods of construction brings in savings to the tune of 50 per cent while it also helps cutting down the carbon footprint. The savings also constitute the terms of construction in all terrain and weather conditions, the company said.

site-environment • Thermal insulation leads to reduced energy requirement of infrastructure • Versatile and suitable for all types of built environment starting from residential blocks to offices, warehouses, commercial complexes, site offices, telecom shelters etc • Virtually zero maintenance throughout life. ACME has used Prefabrication technology to commission various state-of-the-art infrastructure including commercial buildings, highaltitude accommodation units and cold-storage infrastructure.

Advantages of using prefabricated technology for construction: • Structurally strong • Low wastage and spill ensures clean

The company is underway to commission the 35th National Games Village at Kerala through prefabrication technology. n

Access to the bridges took the form of two stairways and a wheelchair ramp. For these jobs too, the Layher product range always has the right components to hand: from lightweight aluminium platform stairways and separate stairway stringers for different loads, to child safety guard rails. For the safety of the many passengers, the scaffolding constructors selected for the stairway access two parallel structures to match the double bridge solution. The combination of size 750 stairway stringers and standard decks used as steps permits variable widths of the stairways: in this case 2 metres, matching the width of the bridges. Thanks to the convenient pitch dimensions, the size 750 stairway stringer is also ideal for public areas.

substructure, the scaffolding erectors chose a combination of lattice beams and Allround equipment. Thanks to the option of flexible height adjustment, the ramp could be built with exactly the required inclination of 4 degrees including its horizontal intermediate platforms – and in a space-saving U-shape. Wheelchair-suitable and childsafety guard rails ensure a high degree of safety during use. In this way, the Layher Allround Bridging systems to build a solution for access of passengers not only tailor-made, but also economical and time saving solution (constructed in just 10 days). n

f

During construction of the bridge, the Allround bridging system was a crucial advantage. With the extremely strong Allround supplementary component – a modular lattice beam – it is possible to build both bridges with a free span of up to about 30 metres long and support beams for heavy loads quickly and easily. It also ensured that electric cables and communication equipment could be routed without problems. For wellorganized passenger flows in both directions, the scaffolding erectors built two parallel bridges each with an 18 metres span and 2 metres width. The use of Layher Event decks ensures trip-proof movement – on foot or in a wheelchair. The bridges were assembled on the ground and then emplaced by crane. The high fitting accuracy of Allround equipment played a big part in speeding up assembly.

Steel PEB: versatile solution for warehouses Nowadays, if we observe, most of the warehouses are built using PEB technique. Let us find out what are the aspects that are making PEB a preferred method for building warehouses on large scale

I

n earlier days, warehouses were built with traditional brick and mortar construction. However, with the advent of sustainable construction, pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB) technology came into limelight in the warehousing segment and various companies are taking efforts to establish themselves in market.

PEB way for warehouses PEB technology has now become one of the preferred modes of construction for warehouses being setting up across India. This erstwhile concept in India has now become a widely accepted solution with proven benefits for construction in the Indian environment. “With eco-friendly construction and fast catching up the growth curve in the Indian market, PEB is the most viable construction solution as it is a green product with very little impact on the environment,” says D Raju, Managing Director, Kirby Building Systems India Ltd.

PEB is also considered as a perfect fit for developing warehousing sites because of the recyclable nature of steel used in the buildings. Kirby has already been designing buildings that meet the green building and eco-friendly construction norms. A combination of standard hotrolled sections, cold-formed sections, profiled sheets, steel rods, etc. are used for the construction of industrial steel structures with PEB systems and are

the preferred practices followed in the warehousing industries. “The most popular configuration of the industrial warehouses currently being used is of PEB which varies in multiple width modules each of about 25-30 metres, having equal nos. of bays varying between 7-10 metres with an eave height around 6-10 metres,” says Anjan Dutta Roy, Vice President, Tiger Steel Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. “In a study between a typical PEB frame when compared with Conventional Steel Buildings (CSB) shows that the PEB provides a better economic output.” PEB as the name indicates that the concept involves steel building systems which are predesigned and prefabricated. These are produced in a workshop under a global standard quality control by using latest manufacturing techniques. “The basis of the PEB concept lies in providing the sections varying throughout the length according to the bending moment diagram using non-prismatic rigid frames with slender elements. Tapered built up sections are 58

very commonly used which are made out of thin plates,” informs Mr Roy.

Choosing right material “Selection of right material of steel depends up on many factors like building occupancy, steel grade, economy, availability, chemical composition, physical property, durability etc.,” says Sanjay Loya, Director, Loya Pre Engineered Buildings Pvt. Ltd. Today steel is one of the most common materials in the world. Modern steel is generally identified by various grades defined by Standards organisations. For example, the society of automotive engineers has a series of grades defining many types of steel. The American Society for Testing and Materials has a separate set of standards, which define alloys such as A36 steel – the most commonly used structural steel in the United States.

Use of steel Steel as a material with high strength per unit mass, has an advantage in constructing structures to have large column-free space. An industrial warehouse is a storage building and is usually configured as single storey steel structure with or without mezzanine floors. The designing of industrial warehouse includes designing of the

structural elements as it consists of rafter systems or roof truss, columns, purlins or girts, gantry girder and its accessories etc. “Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon that is widely used in construction and other applications because of its high tensile strength and low cost,” says Mr Loya. Frames of pre-engineered buildings are made from an extensive inventory of standard steel plates stocked by the PEB manufacturer. PEB frames are normally tapered and often have flanges and webs of variable thicknesses and depth along the individual member. In regular/conventional steel buildings mill produced hot rolled sections (beams/columns) are used. The size of each member is selected on the basis of the maximum internal stress (bending moment) in the member. Since a hot rolled section has a constant depth many parts of the members are over designed. Use of steel or metal is much more advantageous while building warehouses. Mr Roy explains the same through following points: • Many business owners and investors are choosing steel as their material of choice when planning their new warehouse project due to its versatility to meet the storage needs. • PEB warehouse project layout can avoid any interior load-bearing columns to maximise the useable square footage for storage. • PEB being an all-steel design generally eliminates any repairing and maintenance concerns that of other

building materials suffer from. • Metal buildings are extremely durable and typically last longer than other types of buildings. They are also immune to termites and are much more likely to withstand extreme weather conditions than other building materials. As a result of this durability, they usually require less maintenance and tend to cost less to insure. • Steel buildings take less time to build than other types of structures, thus getting a project done a few weeks sooner than normal saves investors quite a bit of money.

Advantages and applications Generally PEB has number of advantages over the CSB which is widely accepted after obtaining results from various software analysis and literature studies. Weight of PEBs are lighter than CSBs on primary members (about 30 per cent) and secondary members (purlins and girts) made out of coils compared with HR sections used in CSB. PEB design are more efficient compared to CSB in optimising through various software analysis compare to fewer design aids, hence each project require more time. Connection design is also lesser for PEB when measured against CSB. Foundation support reaction for PEB is also much lesser than CSB, hence light-weight foundation can be adopted which leads to design simplicity and reduction in cost. “PEB warehouses offer a unique blend of stability, value-engineering, economy and unmatched speed of construction,” says Mr Roy. “Also future expansion is easy and simple for PEB

Standards and codes “The lack of standards and codes leaves the customer in a doubt. Presently, in some developed countries like USA, the engineers follow AISC/MBMA recommendations for PEB applications, whereas in India, PEB specific code is yet to be formulated,” says Mr Loya.

as compared to CSB which is also very tedious and costly.” There have been early experiments in RCC structures for godowns and warehouses but large spans render RCC options ineffective. In the past the predecessor to PEB was fabricated structural steel shed with trusses and stanchions. But again since this involved usage of standard sections, often left the structure a bit over-designed and cost inefficient. Thus, makes more popular and well accepted concept while choosing the projects such as warehousing. The PEB buildings are fabricated in such a way that they just need to be bolted to erect, thus reduce the man power requirement and equipment deployment. It can be planned viewing ‘just-in-time delivery’ basis for optimising

the logistics and construction schedules to match the warehouse developers’ programme. This helps in bringing down the overall project schedule quite a great extent as compared to CSB or RCC buildings of similar configuration. This results in lesser gestation period on investment and faster ROI. Accurate PEB scheduling provides the investors to suit the dead-lines to start renting out the spaces for faster returns. The most important aspect of PEB warehouses is that they are made out of largely sustainable structures since the materials used are being sourced from sustainable producers. Financial institutions’ strategy on investments in warehousing business has evolved with large format sustainable and efficient warehouses built to matching global standards sought by global players. “Warehousing is an ‘investment opportunity’, therefore it needs to be managed through a very optimal management expenses and PEB warehouses are the right answer to it,” believes Mr Roy.

In a study between a typical PEB frame when compared with Conventional Steel Buildings (CSB) shows that the PEB provides a better economic output

In all, we can say that advantages of PEB include: cost savings, faster ROI, quicker delivery, faster installation, single source responsibility, low maintenance, flexibility in expansion, Architectural flexibility, earthquake resistant, superior quality, etc. and these have become vital for any type of warehouse construction.

Anjan Dutta Roy, Vice President, Tiger Steel Engineering India Pvt. Ltd.

Solutions offered Warehouses are increasingly addressing specific requirements for its customers such as offering bare storage, storage with crane facilities, food storage, storage with multi-level stacking and open storage. Kirby India provides a package solution for these types of requirements with its new concept of Rack Supported Warehouses based on the end use of that warehouse. It has already supplied such buildings to many companies. “Kirby India is the torch bearer for introducing the PEB technology in India,” says Mr Raju. “Kirby’s warehouse buildings are customised to meet the unique demands of the customers. As a result, today Kirby has become synonymous with PEB warehouse buildings in the Indian market.” Kirby is present in both in PEB and storage solutions and it becomes strategic for the company to provide end to end solution for increasing demand for such type of requirements in the market.

Summary Advantages offered by PEB have made it more suitable and preferable method for building warehouses. In current market scenario, more than 80 per cent of warehouses are being built with PEB which has taken over the conventional mode of construction. n

Vantaanjoki, pile slabs, underpass and an associated trough. In addition to cast in place structures and reinforcement, the project parties modelled the roads and earthworks and utilised BIM in checking and approval process and on site. The winning project in the Precast category was the Mons railway station garage in Belgium, an unexpectedly beautiful structure by Hurks delphi engineering. Architect Santiago Calatrava created complex frame and wall element shapes that Hurks cast flawlessly as they communicated the fabrication information to mouldbuilders and rebar workers directly from Tekla software. The best among the Structural Engineering projects was the multifunctional Torun Concert Hall in Poland by Fort Polska. The geometrically very complex building consists of five modules, of which two can be joined to create a larger space for all kinds of events. The hall has inclined load-bearing concrete walls below partially movable ceilings made of hundreds of polymorph faces angled together. Without BIM, mapping this architectural thought would not have been possible. The winner of the public vote was the 2010-metre cable-stayed Cao Lanh

Bridge in the river Mekong delta in Vietnam. Created by VTCO Investment’s team of new Tekla users, the bridge model will not only be used for shop drawings production but also will play an important role in the operation and maintenance after the completion of the bridge, scheduled for 2017. The bridge was the clear favourite of over 3,500 online voters. In the Student category, the winner was a team of five students studying Architectural Engineering at Chosun University, South Korea. Jindal Stainless launches stainless steel modular toilets

J

Prefab

Mr Jain adds, “Towards this goal, Jindal Stainless has developed India’s first stainless steel modular toilets with biodisposable tanks, focussing on areas where accessibility to toilets and waste disposal is abysmal.” Stainless steel modular toilets provide an appropriate solution for this longstanding problem. In terms of structural strength, product life, maintenance, hygiene, eco-friendliness and scrap value, stainless steel toilets have proved to be better than fibre, mild steel or brick-and-mortar toilets. Due to the modular design, the toilets can be assembled on site, saving time and transportation costs. Weather resistant and with PVDcoated interiors, they can be installed easily at government schools, hospitals, tourist places, pilgrim centres, marketplaces, public auditoriums and fairs, railway stations and bus stands. Most importantly, these are competitively priced against fibre or brick-and-mortar toilets – a single-unit toilet costs ` 99,999 onwards, while the community toilets which are six units start from ` 3.99 lakhs and eight unit starting from ` 4.99. The disposal tanks cost approximately ` 59,000 per unit. Moreover, a bio-digester tank solution is been jointly developed with the DRDE, Railways and RDSO, which will solve hygiene issues on railway tracks and areas around them by converting human waste into gases and water with the help of specially-developed anaerobic bacteria that survive on such waste. n

indal Architecture Ltd., a subsidiary of Jindal Stainless Ltd., has announced the introduction of economical, ecofriendly, durable and convenient stainless steel modular toilets, as part of its expanding product range. The recyclable toilets are available in a range of single units and as community toilets of six and eight units, respectively. These toilets have the option of being upgraded to automated biotoilets. Emphasising on the need of modular stainless steel toilets in India, Anuj Jain, CEO, Jindal Architecture Ltd. said, “Human waste disposal is an ever-growing, perennial problem arousing aesthetic inhibitions, together with the threat of infectious diseases due to the contamination of groundwater. Less than 30 per cent of Indians presently have access to toilets. In rural regions, only 10 per cent of houses have toilets, with the rest resorting to open defecation. Although people in cities have better infrastructure facilities, nevertheless, here also just 70 per cent have access to toilets. This increases mortality rates because untreated waste causes diarrhoea, amoebiasis, cholera, typhoid and other dangerous diseases that threaten the lives of lakhs of children and their families.” Open defecation is one of the main causes of diarrhoea, causing the annual deaths of more than 750,000 children less than five years of age. Significantly, many of these deaths occur in India, where almost 30 million schoolchildren lack access to toilets. As many as 595 million Indians practice open defecation daily – almost 45 per cent of the populace. January 2015

Waterproofing

Profile

Supreme Bituchem’s modified waterproofing membranes

T

echnically, waterproofing is “the treatment of a surface or structure to prevent passage of water under hydrostatic pressure”. It is critical yet neglected issue when it comes to finishing works of a structure. One has to understand that the basic purpose that gets served by waterproofing is the increase of service life of the structure, by preventing the corrosion of the steel of the structure. The importance of waterproofing, especially in Industrial areas and in manufacturing units can’t be neglected as machineries and materials of corers of value are at stakes. Today, the world’s 60 per cent of waterproofing works are getting executed by using APP/SBS modified membrane. The method not only saves labor cost but also there is no possibility of manipulation from

contractor’s end while executing the work as it is a pre fabricated material. These membranes have wide range of applications like on residential and industrial roof tops and deck slabs, basements, reservoir, tunnels, gardens, podiums, bridges and flyovers. The easy application is the reason why it has got a wide acceptance across the globe. Following is the method of application of APP/SBS Modified bitumen based polyester reinforced waterproofing membrane: • Clean the surface thoroughly to make it smooth and free of any foreign material. • Apply a coat of Supreme Super Primer @ 0.3 litres per sq.m. and allow it to dry. In areas of high humidity, the primed surface should be left overnight. • Laying Supreme Super Shield

Membranes on the primed surface, start laying of membrane at lowest point of the slope roof ( or any other structural member) and progress to the higher point. Unroll using a LPG torch and applying uniform pressure with a roller/wet cloth to ensure to remove entrapped air, if any. • Heat both layers of membrane at the overlap and use round tipped hot trowel to seal overlap. Excess compound should be smoothened and pressed into seam using hot trowel. Overlap joint shall be provided of 75 mm in longitudinal direction and 100 mm in transverse direction. • Super Shield Membrane is also available in self adhesive sheet hence no torching is required. If work is executed properly, we give the guaranty of 5 to 10 years depending upon the thickness of the membrane used. n

Construction & Chemicals

Industry Analysis

Construction chemicals industry: slow but steady on its growth path Today’s construction chemicals industry, with some recently observed positive signs, seems to have a good productive future in coming years for value-creating solutions across product segment and industry sectors.” “Concrete structures are being designed with a 100-150 year design life (infrastructure and metro projects). This kind of design lifecycles can only be achieved if concrete is protected with the correct protective systems,” says Mr Surlaker. “In our experience, our coating systems themselves have shown a life in excess of 15 years on some structures. If the coating can last that long, the structure it protects can have a virtually inexhaustible design life.”

T

he construction chemicals industry generally caters to the chemicals used for construction, repair or maintenance of concrete structures. This article talks about the current scenario, opportunities and current solutions offered in the field.

Current scenario According to data published by the Construction Chemicals Manufacturer’s Association (CCMA), the market size of construction chemicals is currently pegged at ` 3,300 crores in sales and 900 – 1,000 KTA in volume during 2013. According to another analysis by the planning commission, the construction chemicals industry is slated for a 16 per cent p.a. growth. The current scenario thus looks very promising and is burgeoning at an excellent pace. Demand-supply gap “Considering today’s scenario, we do

74

January 2015

not believe there is a gap in the supply as opposed to the demand, but we do hope with the rising construction industry and awareness of our industry, the demand for these high performance chemicals will grow,” believes Sunny Surlaker, Head – Admixtures Division, MC-Bauchemie India Pvt. Ltd. “We are poised to cater to the demands of the construction industry.”

Opportunities The opportunities in the sector have to be availed by raising awareness about the material segment. Today the keywords in construction are durability and sustainability. “Markets are expanding and would continue to expand due to growing construction industry,” says Upen Patel, Business Director, Construction Chemicals South Asia, BASF India Ltd. “We have more and more opportunities

Once the market is convinced that protecting concrete structures using suitable coating systems is a benefit over the lifecycle of the structure and not an undue cost, the application of protective coating systems will rise much faster than it is now.

Markets are expanding and would continue to expand due to growing construction industry.

materials as substitutes for cement clinker), by reducing the energy demand of buildings (a broad portfolio of insulating materials) and by extending the service life of buildings (e.g. repair mortars).”

Several benefits can be obtained by incorporating the surface treatments in a welldesigned manner right from conception of project.

Sunny Surlaker, Head – Admixtures Division, MC-Bauchemie India Pvt. Ltd.

“Material quality, technically sound application systems and correct specifications would play a key role in creating more opportunities in this sector,” adds Mr Surlaker.

Products offered “We have a strong sales team, spread through the length and breadth of the country interacting with developers, architects and consultants and offering unique solutions from our portfolio,” informs Mr Patel. The global presence and experience which the company has makes it a formidable supplier with whom its customers rely for any of their situations. From making the basements watertight to making the roof leak proof, it offers value which is appreciated by the customers. The admixtures required for pumping the concrete to a height of more than 100 metres could be a unique challenge for developers, but the global connect it has with its counterparts in various regions on projects like Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and Shanghai Tower, makes it a partner of choice. “We offer an array of products and systems which are as per global standards,” says Mr Patel. “Our products reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector by increasing the energy efficiency of the construction process (supplementary cementitious

Its low VOC dispersions are used as raw materials in adhesives, coatings and sealants as well as those formulated products themselves, reduce indoor emissions. Its Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) not only provide outstanding insulation values, but are also light-weight and therefore eliminate the need to transport heavy brick and stone. The company’s research and development activities aim to continuously optimise the technical and sustainability performance of its products and the processes in which they are used.

Proactive coatings The application of protective coating is an attempt to increase the effective cover of concrete in terms of both quality and quantity. By virtue of their formulations, anti-carbonation protective coatings provide the protection quotient of meters of concrete cover in a very thin layer. Therefore the principle of equivalent cover is very valuable both in repair strategies and even to safeguard new structures that have a very long design life. “Several benefits can be obtained by incorporating the surface treatments in a well-designed manner right from conception of project,” assures MR Surlaker. Although the main function of any surface protectant is moisture ingress control, the coatings can also be designed for resisting chemicals, chlorides, diffusivity of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Root and vegetation growth can be prevented in concretes under damp conditions. Another benefit these protective coatings provide is equivalent cover to concrete. MC’s Zentrifix-elastic at 2mm thickness provides a cover equivalent to 72 cm of well-compacted M30

concrete. Its EmceColor-flex system at 331 micron thickness provides a cover equivalent to 74 cm of well-compacted M30 concrete. The application of these materials in terms of waterproofing or protective systems thus becomes imperative. Mr Surlaker explains MC-Bauchemie’s offerings in coating systems to safeguard concrete structures as follows: Thick coatings (1-2mm): These are breathable waterproof cementitious polymer modified coatings. In this category, MC has to offer Zentrifix Elastic, Dichtament DS-flex and the crystallisation based Dichtament DS2 System. Application areas include: marine structures, wastewater treatment structures, wet areas in bathrooms and building construction, terraces, interior walls of water tanks, etc. Elastic-elastomeric, anticarbonation, breathable, crack bridging, UV resistant coatings (200-300 micron thickness): MC’s product systems include the EmceColor-flex and Betonflair systems. Application areas include: exposed concrete structures like bridges, power plants, fair face finished building walls, external faces of water tanks, etc. Breathable hydrophobic impregnation coatings, based on silicone, silane-siloxane: MC’s product systems include Nisiwa SH, Emcephob SX, Emcephob AC and the Betonflair CT system. Application areas include: masonry facades, natural stone facades, decorative plasters, low abrasion resistant floors, etc. Resin based coatings: The company has MC-DUR range of epoxy coatings for a variety of purposes. Applications areas include high chemical resistant concrete applications, low pH concrete applications, etc. where there is no water movement/osmosis. n

Instrumentation & automation of waste treatment plant Ajit Joshi of Forbes Marshall Ltd. (Pune) describes some important and mandatory instruments for waste water plants

I

ndia as a developing country has seen rapid growth of industries over last 2/3 decades. Along with economical development we are also praised with air pollution/water pollution. For many years industries have been dumping liquid as well as solid waste in lakes, rivers and open field. Now we are feeling its cumulative effect in terms of more and more unfertile land, increase in water related diseases, scarcity of drinking water, loss of aquatic life, etc. Over the past few years concern for the environment in India has been growing. This is due to forceful execution of laws and procedures by pollution controlling authorities, also people have realised the need and benefit of treating / recycling of wastewater. Even if most of the Industries have their own ETP to treat the wastewater, ETP always gets last priority from all fronts. Actual design and steps involved in ETP are based on the effluent load generated by that particular plant. Based on the type of effluent generated different treatment processes can be designed to take care of specific effluent generated by plant. However, people do not give due importance to know the nature of effluent. Most of the parameters like quantity of effluent generated and different chemical pollutants present are based on one time test or on mere assumption of some senior experienced person in the plant. During actual operation of effluent treatment process also most of the people depend on off line measurement of different parameters. You can definitely save on the cost of online instruments, however you are losing much more in terms of inconsistent control over process parameters. If you are not aware of exact effluent load you would never attend stabilised control over effluent treatment. With the help of

82

offline analysis, which will be only once or twice a day, you won’t know the ups and downs taking place in terms of effluent load on different controlling parameters such as pH/TSS/MLSS/DO/COD/BOD etc. Some tests require the measurement to be conducted on line since the process of obtaining a sample may change the measurement. E.g. DO. Offline measurement will give lot of error because of absorption of O2 from air. Also the process by which the sample is taken, may greatly influence the result. Developed countries are using lot of instrumentation and automation of wastewater plants. In India also most of the instruments are available. However keeping in mind Indian industry culture and their experience of instrument here we would like to discuss about some important and mandatory instruments for waste water plants. Complete effluent treatment process is designed to treat all pollutants present in effluent. It is important to know the quality of final effluent which gets discharged out of plant. The typical parameters, which can be monitored, are pH/Turbidity/DO/MLSS/Redox/ Suspended solids/COD/BOD/TOC Most of the above measurement s are global measurements. There are some chemical constituents, which need cross checking before discharge of effluent out of the plant. Major parameters out of this are ammonia, sulphide, nitrate, phosphate, and chromium. Today titration based on line analysis of these parameters is possible.

Organic load is another major pollutant which needs complete conversion before discharge. High concentration of organic load means consumption of more DO. Regular practice is to monitor BOD/COD levels to know the oxygen demand. With todays technology it is possible to monitor COD/BOD on line. Even there are some lab techniques available which can monitor true BOD in 40 minutes in place present BOD3 or BOD5 method. In India many industries have started using on line analysers for wasterwater plants. Online analysis will provide a clearer understanding of process variability and provide a rapid response to change in the process. On line analysers optimise process performance and indicate operational problems. It also improves knowledge of treatment processes and indicates long term performance trends as well as conformity with environmental regulations before discharge. Total instrumentation available today includes water quality parameters such as pH, redox, DO, turbidity, suspended solids, sludge profiler, sludge level indicator, MLSS, ammonia, nitrate, sulphide, phosphate, TOC, COD, BOD, oil and grease, phenol, water in oil analyser, magnetic flow meter, ultrasonic level indicators, dosing pumps, and VFD. We must appreciate that responsible and efficient effluent management is the future of all water consuming industries and effluent from well controlled plants can be recycled only if you monitor your process. Unmonitored treatment of wastewater is just wasted water. n

AIVA: committed to provide fresh water to everyone

We take pride in taking part in the movement of ‘fresh water to everyone’ and ‘water conservation’ by providing quality, innovative products at very affordable prices. We will remain committed towards community and customers to serve them better. Anant Nampurkar, Managing Director, AIVA Engineering Pvt. Ltd. (Pune)

A

lot have been spoken about the concerns of need of water conservation. Many eminent organisations are working towards it. However, a lot is yet to be done! Every person need to understand the gravity of this issue. Today every individual should take it as personal goal to save water. India on one hand is making significant progress to become one of the top economic giants in the world. But on the other hand many people, not only in rural but in urban areas, are deprived from regular supply of fresh drinking water. Many health and global organisations have funded projects for supply of fresh water to every household customer. In many developed countries having a fresh water supply is treated as fundamental right of every citizen. Now, the government has rightly adapted the same principal and started in this direction. Now it is every citizen’s prime responsibility to use the water judiciously. It is right approach taken by government to charge each house

connection with nominal charges which will help to maintain high standards of water supply preferably on 24x7 principal. It is proven that supply of fresh water on 24x7 helps to reduce the water consumption than supply it for limited period. However there is a long way to go to provide drinkable water to each and every house hold. Now every individual, industrial organisation should come forward to help government to achieve this as their social responsibility. Today, it is the responsibility of every industrial organisation to actively involve in the efforts of various community welfare activities. It is very encouraging to see that number of industrial organisations is taking keen interest in Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) and making efforts to help community to reduce the pain areas if not completely dissolve it. Many more such industrial organisation should come forward and take their share in shouldering many

responsibilities which will surely help to make this country and this globe a better place. AIVA Engineering has identified the importance of water supply and water conservation well in advance and with vast experience in this field AIVA have already developed entire range of products with short span of time for its customers, which not only help to reduce the cost but also help to save on time so as to make more connections per day to reach out each needy household customer as early as possible. Further to reduce total administration time and cost for government officers and major contractors, AIVA has developed complete basket of products required for house service connections so that they get an innovative, durable and reliable source of supply of these components at a ‘single window shop’. While doing so, AIVA is also becoming a pride member of ‘Make In India’ movement too by developing manufacturing base for Multinationals in our Production plant at Pune. n

WIN INDIA 2014 empowers “Make in India” mission

H

ANNOVER MESSE 2015, the world’s biggest industrial trade fair will be inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12th April together with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The show will host around 300 Indian exhibitors in the India pavilion, including public sector giants which will be participating in the five-day fair, seeking technology collaborations,

business tie-ups and showcasing their capabilities to the world. WIN INDIA 2014, an annual event organised on the same lines of HANNOVER MESSE, showcased new technology and products manufactured by Indian exhibitors and international exhibitors from 10-13 December 2014 in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

The Automation Application Park at WIN INDIA, was a first of its kind & demonstrated live factory automation solutions like batch production assembly cell unit using Robot, high speed production line, Material Handling system using a QUATTRO robot and MIS gadget application – controlling machines through mobile.

Solutions showcased at WIN INDIA Automation is increasingly playing a critical role in the operations of the manufacturing industry, helping it to stay competitive, fit and quality conscious.
