E

conomic and profitable management of transport operations have brought about increased awareness of mix of vehicles for end to end transport solutions. This in turn has led to an increase in the use of medium and heavy commercial vehicles for long distance haulage and with more highways and better roads; the accent is on heavier vehicles with higher load carrying capacity and better overall operating parameters. The increasing need for competitive positioning by fleet operators, the convergence of developed and emerging markets and stringent environmental and fuel efficiency regulations underscore the importance of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). However, R N Rao, Director Marketing at AMW Motors Ltd. observes, “This

needs a holistic approach, especially in a price sensitive market like India. Even as more and more fleet operators are coming into play, the large volume of single and a few truck owners still constitutes an important segment for manufacturers.” He adds, “As customers are exposed to more technologically advanced products, they are also thinking of follow-up costs that have an equally important impact on TCO.” According to Vinod Aggarwal, CEO of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) Limited, “While the Indian highway infrastructure has improved in the last few years, diesel prices have remained high (except in recent times) creating stress on the fleet owner’s profitability. This has resulted in the need for high

We are consulting with our customers to understand their needs and application segments and working closely with them to ensure that they realise the profitability that these trucks promise,” Mr Aggarwal informed. With the aim to be a trusted sustainable transport partner for India, Scania creates value for its customers by delivering world-class vehicles and services. “Our focus is on safe, efficient, low-carbon solutions to enhance customer profitability. Keeping these values in mind, all Scania vehicles come with the promise of market leading productivity, maximised vehicle uptime and outstanding fuel efficiency all leading to the best possible Total Operating Economy (TOE). The performance and operating economy, the long operational life of a Scania Vehicle and our total product and service offerings will result in lesser visits to the workshop which means lower cost of maintenance,” Anders Grundströmer, Managing Director, Scania India and Senior Vice President, Scania Group said.

I-shift for mining Just three years after the first Volvo FMX was launched, a new one is ready to take performance and productivity to a new level. Rama Rao AS, Senior Vice President,

Sales, Marketing and Aftermarket, Volvo Trucks India, VECV said, “The all new Volvo FMX is an extremely robust, powerful and efficient truck for the toughest operating conditions.” Volvo FMX has been designed considering the learning from Volvo experience in India and global markets in rough deep mining and heavy construction application. Packed with smart new technologies to improve fuel efficiency and features to minimise fatigue on the driver and maximise productivity. “I-shift for Mining” is one of those features (and technology), that improves productivity, driving comfort and fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The all new Volvo FMX 440 8x4 is being introduced in India with two transmission variants – manual and the automated gear box “I-shift” optimised for mining applications. This I-shift gearbox is Volvo’s 4th generation automated gear box, installed with software particularly optimised for mining operations. I-Shift uses its built-in intelligence to quickly and automatically choose the right gears all the times there by improving the fuel efficiency for an average driver.

Besides the compact design of the transmission, the secret lies in the intelligent electronic control unit. It is responsible for controlling the pneumatic system that handles the clutch and shifts. By constantly receiving information about vehicle speed, acceleration, weight, road grade, torque demand and more, it can carry out every shift with extreme precision. It also communicates closely with engine, which in turn adjusts revs and engine brake effect for fast and comfortable gear changing. “The software provides shifting skills that are difficult for even the best of drivers to match. Still if you want to get more involved, you can. The button on the shift selector allows you to step in and change gear manually,” Mr Rama Rao said.

When weight makes the difference AMW’s heavy trucks for long haulage are suited for a wide range of applications and are built for maximum payload. The trucks have proven their performance in relation to drivability, economy and extremely well engineered transmission. These vehicles are ideal as goods carriers for large as well small fleet owners whose demands for maximum capacity by weight or volume are important parameters.

“Highly fuel efficient engines, with a matching superior drive line, extra long life ceramic clutch, double chassis, heavy duty gear box, driver comfort, safety and maintenance features make AMW a must for long distance operators. Comparative fuel tests under similar applications and driving terrain have shown even a 5 to 10 per cent higher fuel efficiency has a significant impact on overall profitability,” says Mr RN Rao. In addition maintenance and repairs, parts support and planned service schedules, training for fleet managers and drivers constitute an important aspect of overall productivity and profitability. According to Mr RN Rao, “Long haulage and heavy go together and as long as you manage every aspect of your operations, the profits are worth their weight.”

Lower costs means higher margins The Scania R 580 6x4, comes with a 580 hp V8 engine, offers high torque at low speed which is essential for overdimensional cargo (ODC) transport. “The Scania V8 engine is coupled with great characteristics such as excellent drivability, outstanding TOE and refined vehicle handling and manoeuvring qualities. A pioneer by itself, Scania R 580 is all set to redefine the truck industry in India,” claims Mr Grundströmer. The Scania P 410 8x4Tipper will later this year come in an updated version equipped with 20 cubic metre rock body developed by one of the world’s leading producers of high strength steel, SSAB. Still equipped with Scania Opticruise, a fully automated gear-changing system

Eicher Pro 6031 truck

for best fuel efficiency and ease of driving, the P 410 now also comes with an option of ‘idle shutdown’, a feature that further strengthens the TOE by lowering the fuel consumption. The complete tipper is significantly lower in weight than current offerings in the market, and with the increased load carrying capacity the customer gets a significantly higher productivity. “This coupled with our driver training program can help even the most experienced drivers to drive more economically, more safely and make a dramatically positive impact on the customer’s bottom line. The customer can expect to save about 10 per cent on fuel alone, with a significant reduction in emissions. What’s more, tyres will last longer; the powertrain will last longer and consume less oil. And lower costs means higher margins,” assures Mr Grundströmer.

Ensuring lifetime profitability Eicher Pro 6000, a new generation product range of heavy duty trucks from 16T GVW – 40T GVW with greater fuel efficiency, superior uptime, faster turnaround time and rider comfort targeted for mass and value segment. Eicher Pro 8000-EICHER Pro 8000 series is a new generation of heavy duty trucks, tractors and tippers from 25T to 49T GVW, meant for emerging mid premium segment that requires high power and torque combination as well as a greater degree of refinement and sophistication.

Advanced oil and lubricants to reduce emissions

With changing norms for industries on pollution, it has become imperative that companies use oil and lubricants that contribute to less pollution. While Industrial activities have always contributed to pollution, strict global norms on pollution and reducing carbon footprint have changed things

Making good environmental friendly lubricant choices does not have to compromise equipment reliability or functionality.

Emissions – A problem not solved overnight In a larger context, the issue of emissions has taken centre stage owing to various environmental compulsions. In the last decade the agenda of climate change being set by various governmental and non-governmental organisations to reduce emissions. This has been a topic of discussion both in the online and offline world. There have been various documentaries made in the interest of reducing carbon emissions because of several activities in society. However, it is to be noted that such questions raised on emission levels are often seen as being practically impossible as it is difficult to reduce carbon emissions overnight. While issues like pollution and carbon emissions continue to be relevant issues, economic problems of society have taken centre stage in the last few years owing to the changing

nature of both Indian and global economy. So essentially, the various policies framed for reducing pollution and carbon emissions are all keeping in mind the changing economy.

Significance of sustainability and energy efficiency for OEMs Venkateswarlu Tadikapalli, Territory head, General Industries, Klüber Lubrication India tells, “Construction equipment OEMs across the globe are focusing on providing reliable yet highly efficient equipment to their valued customers. The concepts of sustainability and energy efficiency are gaining importance in the construction equipment segment more than ever today. While there are many factors which facilitate in achieving this objective, the role played by speciality lubricants for the same is highly significant.”

Mr Tadikapalli tells us, “Most of the frictional elements like gear boxes and bearings used in heavy construction equipment like excavators are often subjected to heavy loads, frequent shocks and adverse environmental conditions which require speciality lubrication solutions. Using high quality speciality lubricants for each of these various elements presents opportunities to not only improve the performance but also the overall productivity. Selection of the proper lubricant is crucial to reduce long-term costs. The best-fit product selection can mean longer lubricant life, reduced machine wear, power savings and improved safety. Making good environmental friendly lubricant choices does not have to compromise equipment reliability or functionality. In fact, appropriate environmental decisions can be part of a first-rate, cost-effective design. The design aspects include 14

the equipment itself, maintainability, economic life span, ergonomics and operation. The correct choice might be synthetic lubricants, lubricants with different additives, or biodegradable products and/or products with less environmental impact. The best product selection for each application in the construction industry varies, depending upon the equipment specifics and its scope of contact with the environment”

Klüber’s range of sustainable and cost- effective lubricants Speaking of Klüber range of lubricants, Tadikapalli continues, “In the instance of closed applications like gear boxes of machines which has very limited scope of contact with the environment, a more cost effective and sustainable option would be a high performance, synthetic gear oil. Klüber’s Klübersynth GEM 4 is one such product which offers three to four times more service life than that of conventional mineral oils. The savings on oil change over time as well as reduced wastage for the customer. The high load carrying capacity of

synthetic oils not only reduces the wear and tear of the gear tooth flank but also helps to run the gear boxes at lower temperatures. In addition to the aforementioned advantages, synthetic oil like Klübersynth GEM 4 also results in considerable energy savings. It also sufficiently protects the equipment against scuffing even at extremely high peak loads, vibrations and oscillations.”

joint of an excavator or the swing device bearing, a safer option could be to go with a greener product over a conventional high performance lubricant. This is becoming increasingly relevant, given the fact that the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) meeting OECD regulations is receiving more and more attention from legislators around the globe.”

According to Tadikapalli, “High performance synthetic greases too can contribute significantly in improving the equipment reliability. These greases are well suited to withstand the heavy load and dusty environments that are prevalent in the construction industry. For instance, Klüber’s Klüberplex BEM 41 132 is a special grease for rolling bearings operating under demanding conditions. It offers longer bearing life excellent corrosion protection and resistance to media.

Klüber lubricants have addressed the requirements of the industry by working closely with leading OEMs from the construction industry to develop a range of biodegradable speciality lubricants called Klüberbio. For example Klüberbio LG 39-700, Klüber’s new open gear grease is made from 100 per cent renewable resources and provides the perfect combination of biodegradability and performance. As a partner for speciality lubricants Klüber offers tailor-made solutions that cater to the demanding needs of the construction industry - be it cost-effectiveness, high performance or compliance with environmental standards. n

BKT anticipates turnaround for tyre market ”In mining and infrastructure we have concerns and issues dealing with payment. That is an impediment to the smooth flow of the business. I hope the government takes care of it,” says PK Ganguly, Head Marketing, BKT

B

alkrishna Industries (BKT) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of off-highway tyres. At ConMac 2015, the company displayed its display its world-class radial range of OTR tyres for North East market. On the sidelines of ConMac, PK Ganguly talks to B2B Purchase and gives an overview of the Indian tyres market.

What made you participate at ConMac 2015? North East is not a very developed place in comparison to other parts of the country. Therefore there is a huge scope for growth for our business as well as for the industry. We felt that ConMac is the best platform to come and participate and showcase our products to other customers. BKT has a wide profile of construction equipment tyres sold in India and abroad. We participated in ConMac Expo when they put up the show for the first time.

We have 3 factories and the 4th one is coming up in Bhuj, Gujarat. So even before the government made an official announcement on ‘Make in India’, we were already there.

Though you have a strong hold in overseas market, how do you look at the market conditions present in India? In India, so far our growth in the infrastructure and mining has not been in line with developed world. There is always a room for growth. BKT is looking at 10 per cent of the domestic market while our other markets constitute 90 per cent. But amongst the domestic market, you are supplying tyres to many OEMs… Yes, we do. JCB is our partner. L&T, CASE and other Indian OEMs are always there with us.

From your product ranges, what are the innovations you exhibited at ConMac 2015? One of the latest developments like the radial range in tipper is exhibited at ConMac 2015. We have exhibited some of our construction backhoe loader tyres which we recently developed. Its excellent grip range will give customers a great value for money. Customers have developed great curiosity for these products.

What are the major challenges you are facing as of now? We have started growing. The major challenge is that the infrastructure and mining segments are not growing the way they should have. Another challenge is the planning and execution of policies by the government. If these things go well then our tyres will flow freely in the market. Therefore the market should grow and it must grow fast.

The government is emphasising on ‘Make in India’. How do you look at it?

Do you think there is a cash and credit issue present in this industry? In mining and infrastructure we have

16

B2B Purchase

March 2015

concerns and issues dealing with payment. That is an impediment to the smooth flow of the business. I hope the government takes care of it.

How do you look at the competition in the OTH segment? Competition should be there and it is there. Many overseas companies are also setting up their business in India. However, our strength is the quality of our products. Our tyres are worldclass because 90 per cent of our base is outside India. We understand the market outside India where we sell in the most competitive environment and our development process is inline with that. So when we develop tyres in India, we keep in mind the Indian terrain and Indian roads and we are successful in our efforts. Service is another factor on which we stand out. Another thing is that we have 2,300 SKUs, which is a great strength. We have the widest product basket. Our products have quality with the widest product market for customers, given for any application. It is well supported by services. Also, R&D is our core strength.

A lot of tyres are being imported from China. Will this hamper the economy of domestic players? If China starts dumping stocks, it will definitely hamper the local tyre industry and the economy in turn. But if it provides a level playing field, then it should not be a problem. n

“Need to ensure cash-flow for project sector” ”The government has to foster a climate of investment in the PPP or similar model and step up direct investment in core sectors for the projects to roll-in faster,” says Manoj Gupta, Head- Marketing Communication, Gates India Pvt. Ltd.

G

ates, the Indian subsidiary of Gates Corporation, USA, has established itself in the Indian hose and hose assemblies market. It has been emerged as one of the most preferred hose assemblies players within construction equipment OEMs. On the sidelines of ConMac 2015, Manoj Gupta speaks to B2B Purchase and highlights the businessrelated challenges and road ahead.

Being an international company, is having an established presence in India going to be an advantage for Gates India? Definitely! As a lot of product suppliers will come to India for better prospects and better product quality, we are raising the bar by creating quality products. Also customers’ demands are very volatile and expect quality products in a quick service time. After sales service and service point will be very important for us. We have around 120 distributors at strategic locations and will keep adding in future. Recently we started the concept of Gates Shoppe in India, a Shoppe dedicated exclusively to Gates products. This is aimed at providing solution as part of the Gates value chain. It will be providing solution to hydraulic and industrial activities. Many OEMs have feedback that there is a cash issue. Is it true? Though a lot of projects have been announced, the crunch of funding still exists. Executions of projects have been started but the only issue is that there have been no or very minimal funds allotted. The government has to foster a

climate of investment in the PPP or similar model and step up direct investment in core sectors for the projects to roll-in faster.

Are there any issues you are facing like pending payments or credit? No, as an organisation we are not facing any payments and credit issues except one or two accounts. However, we are impacted and influenced heavily by changes in prices of rubber or raw material. Being a flexible company with strong internal systems and process, we are trying to cope up with these challenges. Is there any new product range or offerings coming up? We offer a wide range of hoses, couplings and assemblies covering various hydraulic applications and a range of industrial transfer hoses to convey a variety of media, concrete and chemicals. We have also commissioned a tube assembly facility last year to offer best in class tube assemblies to OEMs for fluid conveyance requirements. All the hose and tube assemblies supplied by us are custom made products for individual OEMs. To cater to the growth in this segment and ensure high service levels we have recently expanded and commissioned a new assembly facility at Pune, augmenting our existing capacity at Faridabad and Lalru near Chandigarh. All this is backed by our team of application and technical engineers who work closely with the customers to provide the most optimal solution for the installation.

Which sector do you have a strong foothold? The construction equipment market is the largest segment for hoses and fittings and the domestic market is relatively small compared to Europe, China or US. However, all global major players are present in India leading to a very wide variety in standards and specifications and managing such a variety in smaller volumes has its own challenges. As the market grows we see export of equipment from India also growing and this along with growth in different end market segments like process industries will be important growth opportunities. What are your future plans? Are there any new development from Gates India? We are going to launch 3-4 more products in the coming years. We have recently had a expansion of our the Pune assembly plant to cater to the increasing demand of customer in that region. Gates advantage has always been to work closer to our major customer to provide on JIT (Just In Time) concept to make our clients delighted with speed and quality of deliveries. Since the time Gates established its operations in India in the late nineties, there has been a rising expectation from the customer on safety, high performance and reliability. Gates has well met the customer requirements by continuous innovation and offering products and services through its national network resulting in the Industry leading position and is now well positioned for further strong growth as the country’s new growth era is unfolding. n

Drill more, earn more with your excavator machines opens new opportunities for operators,” said Lionel Smitka, Digga’s Marketing Manager. “The more jobs they can do the more money they can earn for the owner,” he continued. Instead of just moving digging, operators can now use their excavators to drill holes for piling, anchoring or general augering work such as drilling holes for fencing and foundations. “On large jobs time and money savings can be fairly substantial,” said Mr Smitka.

Digga has been manufacturing drilling attachments for over 30 years and is renowned worldwide for its quality and performance through world leading technology and in-house manufacturing. Digga attachments are manufactured in Brisbane, Australia at a state-of-theart manufacturing facility which covers over 12,500 sq.m. Digga also operates facilities in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia as well as the UK and in Iowa, US. Digga’s modern, spacious facility houses numerous machining stations utilising CNC technology to ensure the finest tolerances are achieved. Even the gear sets from the planetary reduction assemblies are cut on site and heat treated to Digga specifications. Checks are made and measurements taken at every step to ensure the overall quality of the Digga product remains uncompromised. Digga has increased its warranty period on all its drive units. Such is the build quality of the Digga product that they can afford to offer industry leading warranty of 5 years gear box and 3 years motor warranties. “These terms are virtually unheard of in the earthmoving industry,” said Mr Smitka. “Quality is everything especially when your business and livelihood rely on these attachments. If they’re not working, neither are you,” he added.

Digga offers the largest range of planetary auger drives, catering for mini machines to 90-tonne excavators for boring, screw anchoring and piling applications. 31 years of design and manufacturing experience has produced the most advanced drive units in the world. Renowned for being “bullet proof” Digga drives have gained a cult following in areas as far as Canada and Russia. EERM recently tested a new Digga PD4 auger drive with Digga’s own ‘swing control’ technology. As predicted, the unit performed flawlessly and the swing control unit leaves one wondering why it’s not compulsory on all jobsites. Swing control eliminates sideways swing while the auger is hanging in the air, while still allowing it to hang true as required for perfect plum line accuracy. The torque achieved via the planetary reduction box was demonstrated in virgin ground with a 450-mm auger, cutting its way into the ground at an impressive rate. The auger tools themselves were easy to remove and replace as required. Digga has tied up with Suretech Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. for sales and product support for its Auger Drives, for the Indian sub-continent. “Suretech is known for its superior product knowledge and excellent after sales service in the Indian Infrastructure industry and thus were our natural choice,” said Mr Smitka. Commenting on this, Sunil Newatia, Chairman, Suretech said, “It’s an honour for us to be associated with Drilling Augers, known worldwide for their superior quality, rugged construction and unmatched performance.” He adds, “If quality, performance and uptime are important to you, then Digga Auger Drives are the smartest choice.” n

Why OEMs need Service Life-cycle Management To ensure efficient service delivery, OEMs have brought all service processes under one roof called SLM

A

ccording to Quest Informatics, for OEMs, on an average aftersales service constitutes 34 per cent of their total revenue and it generates an astounding 25 to 55 per cent of profit. The parts business account for 10 to 15 per cent of sales and averages 25 to 50 per cent of profits. Additionally, profit margins on service contracts are around 25 to 50 per cent, with strong impact on customer loyalty. Warranty costs can impact up to 3 per cent (or more) of yearly net revenues. So, it is evident that the success or the failure of an OEM is dependent on its quality of after-sales service delivery. OEMs are dependent on service because of various reasons, including the following: • Stiff competition has reduced the margins from new product sale • Equipment or product buyers looking for performance are commitments than just owning them. To ensure efficient service delivery, OEMs have brought all service processes under one roof called Service Life-cycle Management (SLM).

What is SLM? Service Life-cycle Management (SLM) is the profit-driven optimisation of the gamut of processes employed by manufacturers and their service partners ensuring the products perform as promised. SLM is a key value differentiator in durable goods, product, or equipment industry. SLM includes following service processes: • Complaint/call registration and management • Technical support • Spare parts management • Warranty management • Knowledge base and feedback

24

management • Proactive service suggestion based on historical data • Right resource allocation • Returns management • Resource travel management • Escalation • Workshop management • Reports and analytics like KPI, ageing analysis, mean time to respond, mean resolution time, First Contact Resolution (FCR) etc. For effective SLM operations, OEMs must deploy comprehensive IT and process systems that facilitate seamless integration of activities across various actors at different stages. World-class SLM solutions require integration of explicit and implicit knowledge routines, effective management allocation and comprehensive service management. Many SLM solutions available in the market are point solutions, that they have a deep dive of a particular stage or group of stages. They can’t smoothly integrate with other enterprise solutions including parts, sales, and vendor management. OEMs deploying these solutions may need to invest in high customisation and API development. Quest Informatics is an aftermarket specialist company, which has developed a comprehensive collaborative SLM solution. Quest SLM solution is based on industry best-practices across different verticals. Quest SLM development is a culmination of its more than two decades of solution development expertise for Fortune 500 companies across the world. Quest SLM is a highly scalable, outsourcing enabling, enterprise class solution that can be deployed in couple of weeks.

NOEtop: forward-looking formwork concept

N

OEtop is a synthesis of frame and beam formwork. This makes it a multifunctional system that opens new areas of use with opportunities far in excess of those offered by other ordinary steel frame formworks. With a permissible concrete pressure of 88 kN/sq.m., NOEtop is suitable for use on all construction projects i.e. Buildings and Infrastructure. NOEtop is used for concreting of: foundations, open retaining wall sections, walls for cut-and-cover tunnel sections, walls in ventilation and electrical galleries, lift cores, staircase shear walls. It is also used without problem as singlesided formwork. NOEtop steel frame formwork system has integral bracing, hence is used as beam formwork. The tie-rods can be positioned anywhere within the bracing. All the system’s frames and profiles are hot-dip galvanised from inside and outside to make them extremely robust and durable. NOEtop formwork is available in many different panel sizes: Height 0.66, 1.32, 2.65, 3.31 and 5.30 metres; Width 0.25 to 5.30 metres. NOEtop XXL panel, with dimensions of 5.30 m x 2.65 m and a form-face area of over 14 sq.m. is one of the largest formwork panels in the world market. NOEtop large panels can be used end-on or side-on without disrupting the panel grid. NOEtop performs excellently, thanks to its particularly thick-walled steel frames of 3.5 mm, which give the panels their extraordinary strength. NOEtop system eases the task of site construction team in respect of huge range of available accessories: selfsecuring walkway brackets, articulating external formwork corner units and much more. Portable NOEtop stripping corners are specially designed for use in lift shafts, stair wells and building shells where space is tight. With its unique

26

B2B Purchase

March 2015

design, the stripping corners can be drawn-in on themselves easily, to release the forms from the concrete, and let out again into position for the next pour, without having to dismantle the internal formwork units. Hence dismantling the internal formwork unit, e.g. in the case of lift shafts or stairwell cores, is not necessary when using NOEtop stripping corners. Moreover, NOEtop’s adjustable internal and external corners make erecting non-square (non-ninety degrees) formwork corners a very quick operation. They have an easily operated mechanism that allows corners to be set at angles between 60 to 180 degrees. A PU corner strip protects the mechanism by preventing cement or rust from forming deposits inside it and stops water from bleeding out of the concrete. Hence the NOEtop stripping corners considerably simplifies the work of the site construction team, where very few walls meet at right angles. It is possible to cast 15- metre high fair-faced concrete walls in one singlepour only by using NOEtop - the proven wall formwork system manufactured by NOE-Schaltechnik, Süssen, Germany. The 15m wall height not only presents the risk of concrete segregation; but particular care is also necessary in the design of the formwork. Its great height generates enormous concrete pressures

on the panels during the pour. To be adequately equipped for these tasks, the NOEtop steel frame formwork system is capable of withstanding a concrete pressure of 88 kN/sq.m. and outstanding robustness. Whenever there is a demanding requirement of aesthetically uniform concrete surface viz. where majority of concrete surfaces are fair-faced and to be left visible – then use of NOEply formwork facing offers several advantages: It strips off easily from the concrete and gives the surface a consistent appearance, despite being used a number of times. Variations in colour can be avoided. • NOEtop formwork system saves time and labour • NOEtop large panels result in short construction times for affordable housing • Large cast concrete areas offer huge advantage of final perfect and fairfaced concrete surfaces • NOEtop formwork system is highly cost-effective. Layher Allround Shoring: ideal for honeycomb-shaped silo Square, rectangular or hexagonal – thanks to its flexibility in application, Layher’s Allround Shoring TG 60 proved to be the ideal solution for building a honeycomb-shaped silo complex around 90 metres high at Brake in Lower Saxony

L

ayher Allround shoring TG 60 uses a simple, unique and bolt free connection technology. Sliding the wedge head over the rosette and inserting the wedge into the opening immediately secures the component. There is still sufficient play to secure the other end of the ledger. A hammer blow to the wedge transforms the loose connection into a superbly strong structurally rigid one. The face of the wedge head is now precisely positioned against the standard.

Layher’s Allround Shoring TG 60 proved to be the ideal solution for building a honeycomb-shaped silo complex around 90 metres high at Brake in Lower Saxony. With this system of modular design, the construction company was able to adapt the shoring structure for supporting the wall and ceiling formwork precisely to the geometry, and also use it both as work/ protection scaffolding and as a site access.

When a silo complex around 90 metres high and with 38 cells is built directly on the lower Weser, which is a river of sea depth, that’s no small thing for all concerned. For example, it’s not just that the inhabitants of Brake, a sea port in Lower Saxony, have to get used to a completely new skyline: the construction company was faced with challenges by this new structure. “Strong support” were the key words in this context in addition to 360 concrete piles, which extended as far as 19 metres down into the soil to provide the foundation for the structure, which is some 1,400 sq.m. in area, a complex shoring structure was also required for the various construction phases. To enable trucks to drive directly underneath the appropriate silo for loading, walls were built only partially, and then a honeycomb-like grid of beams was provided 12 metres up as the joist for the six-sided cell shafts. The shoring performed several functions in this project: support of the wall and ceiling formwork, work and protective scaffolding for providing this formwork, and site access. The geometry posed a

held in Dubai in Feb 2014, at their XXVI convention.

MAINI has developed innovative technologies such as MAINI Aluminium Formwork System (MAFS) ideally suited for high rise buildings and mass housing projects. MAINI helps to cut down construction time, provide better finish with no need for plastering besides providing a safe working environment. Within a very short span of time within its introduction in the market, MAINI Aluminium Formwork System (MAFS) has bagged the Builders Association of India’s award for excellence in formwork

MAINI specialises in design and manufacture of all types of steel access scaffolding systems such as MAINI Cuplok, MAINI Ringlock, MAINI Quick Stage etc. which cater to power plant boilers, oil refineries, cement plants, shipyards, monuments etc.

While MAINI is continuously upgrading its systems and services through in-house R&D Facilities, MAINI has consolidated its manufacturing facilities with further capacity additions for aluminium formwork plant based at Rudrapur, Uttrakhand with an annual capacity almost Six lakh sq.m. MAINI has also opened a new in-house manufacturing unit at IMT Bawal, Haryana for all types of steel scaffolding, formwork and multi-level car parking system. Its manufacturing facility has an annual capacity of 1,00,000 tonnes.

“Access Scaffolding solutions from MAINI are backed by safe erection and dismantling supervision services and training programs on safety and maintenance of scaffolding

extremely economical way in terms of work preparation, logistics and handling, thanks to fewer basic components. With hexagonal shoring towers inside the honeycombs, the construction precisely matched the six-sided contour of the wall formwork, with a maximum clearance of 30 cms, for example in the area of the walls in their zigzag configuration. Layher steel decks were used as non-slip work surfaces and as fall prevention devices, as well as decks with hatches for integrated access. The installation of further shoring towers between the individual supporting walls to disperse vertical loads during the concreting work for the joists presented no problems. “However, for supporting the ceiling formwork at the edge areas it was rectangular shoring towers that were used. Since we had the option of extending the bay length – from 1.09 to 3.07 metres depending on the load – we made savings both in material and working time. The shoring towers for the individual wall sections were coupled by bolt-free wedge-head connections with Allround ledgers and diagonal braces. Once the concrete was sufficiently strong,

the shoring towers could also be quickly repositioned by crane and modified for the next sections – an efficient solution”, as the site engineer emphasises. This was how Allround Shoring TG 60 provided with strong support for the construction of what is now known as “Silo 6”. The new complex shot up by nearly three metres a day – and the facility for storage and processing of grain, animal feed and oil seed has since been officially opened. This construction project had become necessary in response to rising market demand for higher turnover rates and separate storage of agricultural products. However, the existing silo capacities had proved insufficient at peak periods. With a storage volume of more than 500,000 tonnes, the port of Brake will now be further consolidating its role as one of Europe’s leading agricultural locations besides Ghent in Belgium. n

MAINI also designs and manufactures all types of system formwork, decking systems, wall column and purpose made formwork compatible with international systems on similar lines.

f

particular challenge: to adapt the shoring precisely to the formwork in the area of the partly zigzagging walls too, an extremely flexible system was needed. So our choice was for Layher’s Allround Shoring TG 60. Layher’s Allround Shoring TG 60 is a combination of high-strength shoring frames and standard parts from the proven Allround Scaffolding range, ensuring rapid building progress: firstly, rapid assembly considerably improves efficiency at construction sites. This is assured by the reduced number of components in the prefabricated shoring frames when compared to individual parts, by the low component weight of no more than 18 kilograms, by bolt-free wedge-head connectors, and by the efficient use of material thanks to variable bay lengths. In this way, the TG 60 system adapts variably to the existing loading situation and to the specified geometry. The key advantage for us of Allround TG 60 Shoring was its compatibility with the comprehensive component range of the Allround system. It was possible for all these requirements to be implemented not only optimally, but also in an

It has very good surface finish with no need to plaster and also ease of use,” the company claims. The panels can be fixed and attached with each other with the help of locking handles which arte of the exact size and they fit into the panels exactly and there is no gap between the when locked. The locks help the various panels to join together and make it a single panel as the panels lock very well and there is no leakage of concrete from in between the panels. While making the walls, these panels are attached in two lines having the face of the panels parallel to each other in such a way that the panel tie rod holes match each other and by using aligner/ wallers the ties rods can be reduced and with the help of spares have a exact distance between the panels as of the size of the walls.

It has already been used in all types of construction like caps, foundations, rafts columns, shear walls, retaining walls, wall slab, beam, monolithic formwork etc. It is the best system for verticals and casting cast-in-situ cellular low weight concrete walls and has been adopted by LNT in their projects for inner walls in Gurgaon and some other contractors in projects in Lucknow. The slab system is with the drop head system where one can achieve slab cycles of 4-5 days as well. Now slab plates are also available with plastic steel combination. The company has started a rental of Nova formwork for columns and slabs. “Nova is open to associates with companies for its rental and sale in different cities who have a local presence in construction field in that city,” the spokesperson adds. n

Innovation

Cellular morphology façade offers green solution for building industry rat[LAB]’s cellular morphology façade optimises climatic aspects of heat and light in buildings sector, as this a green building concept, which nowadays is believed to be the future of real estate industry. A large-scale prototype was on display at an exhibition held at Delhi’s Alliance Francaise. Sushant Verma, CoFounder of rat[LAB] is among 20 designers from Delhi, who have been shortlisted for ‘DesignXDesign 2015 20under35’ annual exhibition. The young architects have showcased their prototype of ‘Cellular Morphology Façade system’ which can be retrofitted on any building. The new age computing platforms are deployed with customised and advanced algorithms to design an environmentally adaptive building skin.

Façade is designed to optimise the changing solar insolation and daylight as per the requirements of a building. The componentbased building skin is parametrically designed through an algorithm that can control the apertures of each component based on views, visibility and environmental criteria and prepares fabrication data accordingly. This mathematically driven prototype at display consists of 917 unique cells made of 5,392 non-identical surfaces and 5,227 customised joints

fabricated through digital prototyping techniques. Elaborating further, Mr Verma stressed on the need of computational technology in India and how he aims to bring more focus on developing a new generation of computational designers to the country. He said, “Majority of architecture and design studios in India are not equipped with in-house computational cells and there is a missing gap between design and technology. We aim to bridge this gap for studios by facilitating them with our computational design research cell and bringing in emergent technologies in the design discipline.” He further added, “Computational techniques are being developed today at an increasing rate and can potentially change the way design is practiced, processed and articulated. Computation, with its varied subsets, is one of the most advanced and growing areas of research that potentially takes control of all design tools and processes at multiple scales, and is utilised by majority of leading architects and designers around the globe.” rat[LAB] is optimistic about this new fascinating possibility in building skin design in addressing the growing environmental concerns and would contribute in reducing the global carbon footprint through harmonising energy utilisation through intelligent building skins. This new-age architectural discipline could lead the way in revolutionising the way our roofs and facades are designed in times to come. n

indows and doors systems manufacturer VEKA India announced its plans of expanding its operations and making strategic inroads into the Indian markets including residential projects, hotels, hospitals and other commercial establishments. VEKA India, a subsidiary of VEKA AG – the world’s second largest manufacturers of windows and doors systems recently marked 10 successful years of operations in India. To commemorate the occasion, Andreas Hartleif, Group CEO and Managing Director, VEKA AG visited its India facility located in Navi Mumbai and inaugurated its newly built state-of-the-art showroom and application centre. “The overall market size of PVC window profiles in India is about 40,000 tonnes in an annum. In Germany, VEKA by itself surpasses the figure in less than a month. We believe there is room for exponential growth in India and we are here to capitalise on it,” Mr Hartleif said. “Currently the door and window profiles in India are dominated by aluminium and wood. Also the fabrication is very primitive. World over, uPVC profile is the default choice. This not only provides greater durability, but also offers stunning looks and ultimate energy efficiency by entirely keeping out noise, dust, heat or cold. uPVC profiles also are more cost effective than aluminium and wood when compared apple to apple,” adds Mr Hartleif.

How to protect fasteners from corrosion attacks

J.H. Pavnaskar, Technical Head at Panchsheel Fasteners P. Ltd. summarises importance of protecting the fasteners form corrosion attacks

P

anchsheel Fasteners is a manufacturer of the precisely forged fasteners and allied components suitable for engineering industries, pre engineered buildings, infra structure projects and off road vehicles such as tractors, dozers and earth moving equipment. Panchsheel Fasteners is in this field for more than 35 years. Panchsheel Fasteners has long list of many satisfied customers, this includes government, semi-government and private sector organisations. An off-highway vehicle is any wheeled motorised vehicle not designed for use on a highway and capable of cross-country travel on land, or other natural terrain. An off-highway vehicle is normally classified in 4 categories: l Type I off-highway vehicle is a vehicles are not road worthy. To be operated by one operator, and has handle bar for steering control, example is dirt bikes

l Type II off-highway vehicles are having

height less than 50 inches and weigh less than 1,200 pounds. These vehicles travel on 3 to 4 wheels; example is ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) l Type III off-highway vehicle weighs less than 8,000 pounds, travels on track, designed for cross-country use, example is golf cart l Type IV off-highway vehicles are those heavier than the above three types, designed for heavy work like earth moving, farming etc. example is farm equipment, excavators. It can be easily understood that these vehicles are subjected to most corrosive conditions and are designed for rough use. So it is most important to protect the fasteners form corrosion attacks. Similarly, the fasteners used in bridges, buildings, fabricated structures, and engineering products need to be protected from corrosion attacks. This also increases the life of the product where these fasteners are used.

Panchsheel Fasteners is well aware of the corrosion protection needed. So Panchsheel Fasteners has installed darco coating, geomet coating in collaboration with Nippon Dacro Shamrock Co. Ltd., Japan. Panchsheel Fasteners has also installed mechanical zinc coating plant. In addition to existing hot dip galvanising plant and electro plating zinc and cadmium plant. “Dacromet & Geomet is technologically advanced and environment friendly and is being used in many industries throughout the world.

Advantages l The non electrolytic process does not cause any hydrogen embrittlement (Brittlement caused due to hydrogen attack. This failure cannot be ascertained in advance, and occurs only in use). l The surface is fully covered example is internal threads of the nuts. l Pollution free process. l The coating has a corrosion resistance superior to many other coating systems. l Conforms to Cyclic Corrosion Test. (CCT) l Can withstand up to 250 C. n

PROCUREMENT GUIDELINES

Guidelines to make concrete durable Hasan Rizvi, Vice President, STP Ltd speaks of products and mix of chemicals offered by STP that helps make concrete durable and resistant to several environmental factors

D

urable concrete structures can be achieved only through careful attention to many details. Durability is a key determinant for both new construction and repair of old structures. The durability of concrete structures can be defined as their ability to sustain the serviceability for which they were designed. In concrete, quality assurance is a matter of testing and inspecting to ensure the proper selection, proportioning, mixing, handling, placing, and curing of the materials, as well as the appropriate design of the structure itself. The following points should be taken into account for both the construction of new concrete structures Water Proofing of Structures

and the repair of old and deteriorated structures:

Factors affecting the durability of structures • Poor quality construction • Lack of waterproofing treatment • Poor maintenance, blocked drain pipes • DPC failure • Lack of proper slope causing stagnation of water • Leaking pipe joints. Waterproofing of structures • Basements (SuperThermolay APP membrane/ STP PVC membrane) • Roof (SuperThermolay APP membrane / STP PVC membrane / ShaliCem EWP) • Sunken ( ShaliCrete –R) • Planters (STP Hybrid System: ShaliUrethane LHM and ShaliCrete-R) • Over Head and Underground Tanks (ShaliCem EWP). Water bodies, fountains (ShaliCem EWP, Injection grouting with ShaliGrout IP)

General concrete deterioration Most concrete deterioration can be attributed to water penetration. Concrete absorbs moisture until it becomes saturated. When water enters in to the concrete structure it results in spalling of the concrete. Therefore, this

needs to be prevented. Migratory Corrosion Inhibitor, being Amine based bipolar in nature, used as an additive during concreting / Repairs, can protect the steel from corrosion in aggressive environment. • Migratory Corrosion Inhibitor (ShaliPlast RCI) • Microconcrete (ShaliFix MC) • Epoxy Bonding Agent for joining old and new Concrete (ShaliBond Concrete). Providing good slopes and effective drainage, it is possible to prevent water from ponding and application of waterproofing treatment thus preventing water from being absorbed. Structure design should accentuate water-shedding characteristics for vertical elements — for example, the proper design detailing of window ledges can prevent the wall from wetting — and incorporate slopes and drain holes for such horizontal elements as decks. Steel in reinforced concrete is prone to chemical attack in certain corrosive environments. Sealing the concrete surface with an Acrylic Polymer like ShaliCrete R of STP, widely tested and used for waterproofing and protection of concrete. Adequate cover helps in

fter using good concrete and waterproof plasters, the final stand against water would be a physical barrier to ensure the water does not enter the building envelope and deteriorate structural or cosmetic elements. Physical waterproofing barriers can be of preformed membranes or they can be slurry-applied membranes. Whilst having many advantages, preformed membranes have the inherent limitations such as overlapping joints and the difficulty of application across change in geometry of the structure. Slurry applied membranes help in overcoming these limitations. Slurry applied membranes are advantageous on account of their ease of application and mouldability to form seamless membranes over any structure. Polymer modified bituminous emulsions with low VOCs are popular for basement waterproofing especially in aggressive soil conditions. Slurry applied membrane should be of breathable type capable to avoid blisters and craters which an eventually effect the barrier performance. These membranes have crack bridging properties in addition to covering complex geometric shapes. These systems are compatible with moist surfaces, are environmentally friendly, and free from solvents, all the essentials needed for today’s green buildings. These products are also easy to apply, making it perfectly suitable for applications in difficult, space-limited sites.

Applications for these kind of membranes are multifold, in basements, wet areas, swimming pools, tanks, deadwalls, terraces, terrace-gardens, structural elements and so on. The main point to remember while using a slurry applied membrane is the correct detailing of joints, waterstops and interfaces (covings) between horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Another benefit, these waterproofing membranes such as zentrifix-elastic, manufactured by MC-Bauchemie, provide is equivalent cover to concrete. For e.g. zentrifix-elastic at 2mm thickness provides a cover equivalent to 72 cm of well-compacted M30 Concrete. This feature allows Zentrifix-elastic to be used in repair and protection projects apart from waterproofing applications. The specifier or constructor has innumerable materials at its disposal, each claiming to be the best. Most of these materials are characterised by

generic properties. These properties are suitable for quality control to produce batch certificates, but do not address the waterproofing system as a whole. The best waterproofing system is made of good base, good material and good application. The success of waterproofing system depends not only on the materials alone, but also more on application and understanding limitations of the materials in question. Rather than asking for guarantees from applicators, which has not stopped failures, the adherence to quality assurance systems should be reverted to. n

Construction Chemicals

How to enhance performance and durability of concrete structures This article talks on the use of construction chemicals to enhance overall durability and sustainability of structures

U

se of construction chemicals has become a necessity due to improved construction techniques and stress on durability of structures. Extending service life of structures and improving their performance, reducing maintenance cycles can be achieved through the use of these materials. The onus now lies on the manufacturers of these materials to ensure quality and efficacy of the offered products and systems. Sustainability is a must. Ever depleting natural reserves, and escalating costs are driving towards optimisation of materials and resources. Minimising cement content, use of pozzolanic materials and reducing water content are some of the steps which are already in place. Use of protective coatings, proper water proofing systems and joint sealants helps in protecting structures from aggressive environment and water ingress. Timely maintenance and repair helps in avoiding failure of structures within their service life span. Retrofitting of old and damaged structures, helps in increasing their life thereby achieving the objective of sustainability. Overall use of construction chemicals is essential for ensuring the durability and sustainability aspects of structures.

Concrete additives One of the most important and critical ingredient of modern concrete is the chemical admixture. The introduction of admixture has change the way anyone can work with the cement concrete. Water reducing admixtures based on various chemistries. The invent of PCE based admixtures has made it possible to reduce the water binder ratio down to even 0.20. Very efficient dispersion properties make PCEs the best choice when the water binder ratio is below 0.4 and the strength requirements are above 50 MPA. The versatile chemistry of PCE polymers, ensures their use in almost

every mix design. SCC has been mostly associated with PCE based admixtures. Along with the excellent water reduction, they also produce almost flowing concrete, which means, if the mix is properly designed there is either no need for VMAs or their usage could be limited. Nowadays modified PCE based admixtures are available which also offer rheology control. One of the challenges in earlier PCEs was the increased stickiness of the concrete mix, now there are some molecules which offer excellent reduction in stickiness. This is often necessary while designing very high strength mixes which have a tight water cement ratio. In SCC, the stickiness also results from higher amount of fines. Shrinkage reducing admixtures are another example. They are very effective in reducing cracks caused due to drying and autogenous shrinkage, also known as self-desiccation. They act on very fine capillaries with diameters between2.5 to 50nm in diameter, by reducing surface tension within pore solution. This helps in preventing collapse of capillary walls, thereby reducing cracking. Their uses in heavy duty industrial floors enable increasing the span and reduce the requirement for number of joints. SRA’s are mainly based on ethylene and propylene glycol derivatives. While using SRA’s, one must consider their effect on final compressive strength and air entrainment. Use of internal curing agents for concrete is also gathering momentum. They act by providing additional moisture in concrete for a more effective hydration of the cement and reduced self-desiccation. Internal curing means the introduction of a curing agent into concrete to provide this additional moisture.

Two major methods are currently available: l Use of saturated porous lightweight aggregate (LWA) in order to supply an internal source of water. l Super-absorbent polymer (SAP) particles can absorb a very large quantity of water during concrete mixing and form large inclusions containing free water, thus preventing self-desiccation during cement hydration. For optimum performance, the internal curing agent should possess high water absorption capacity and high water desorption rates. Most tunneling work will never be complete without the use of gunniting or the sprayed concrete. Spraying concrete is a very sensitive application. The nozzlemens’ job will not be easy without the use of an accelerating admixture. Typically, quick setting is as critical as controlling the reheology of sprayed concrete. Accelerators combine both these requirement, thus reducing the rebound to a great extent and achieving the quick setting.

Conclusions Construction chemicals offer solutions to a variety wide of issues, faced by the construction industry. From the construction stage to the maintenance of structures and finally even for repair and retrofitting, use of construction chemicals is growing. Understanding the core issues of construction industry and offering quality and cost effective solutions shall be the objective of construction chemicals manufacturers. Educating the buyers and users and developing user friendly systems is also necessary. n

TaeguTec’s new 4NKT increased productivity T

aeguTec is proud to introduce a new product compact four corners double-sided insert for multiple applications – the 4NKT 6 mm insert for end mills, face mills and modular cutters.

The 90 degree entering angle insert, despite the double sided design, is suitable for high ramp down angle applications. Its high positive geometry generates low cutting force while the cross edge insert geometry prevents unexpected insert failure. The increased insert thickness and high strength, combined with the cutter’s wide bottom for improved clamping, enables excellent high stability and productive machining. Furthermore, the 4NKT’s smaller 6 mm size compared to the 11 mm and 16mm sizes increases the number of

teeth on the cutter which is not only good for machining small components but also makes it a finer pitch tool that increases productivity. The new line of cutters is offered as end mills (D16-40 mm), modular types (D16-40 mm) and face mill types (D3263 mm). All cutters include an internal coolant delivery system for efficient chip evacuation that prevents built-upedges. The 4NKT 06 inserts are available in two geometries: “M” for general purpose machining applications and “ML” for low power machining in unstable set-ups and long overhang applications. It is ideally suited for die and mould, automotive, miniature and general purpose industries, and is a versatile tool for general face milling, true 90 degree shoulder milling, full

slotting as well as helical ramping and pocket machining. The Chase2Mill 4NKT new line was put to the test against several competitors’ similar offerings and was seen to substantially increase productivity and tool life. While machining grey cast iron, the new Chase2Mill 4NKT increased tool life by 25 per cent versus a popular competitor’s similar insert. In another test against a competitor’s tool on a work piece that was made from mild steel, TaeguTec’s new 4NKT increased productivity by 100 per cent. n
