Earthmoving tyres play an important role when it comes to the productivity of machines. The article gives some helpful tips on choosing the right earthmoving tyre and ways to make them last longer
Choosing right tyres for earthmoving equipment Other than the cost of the machine itself, fuel and tyres are the biggest expenses one faces in earthmoving and quarry work. While the price of fuel is out of control, there are a number of tyre-related factors one can control that can lower operating costs and increase uptime. It starts with picking the right tyre and just because all tyres

are round and black does not mean they are all the same. Today’s heavy equipment tyres offer a diverse range of technological improvements over designs of just a few years ago.
Selection of right tyres Earthmoving tyres play an important role when it comes to the productivity and efficiency of machines. Thus obviously it becomes necessary to have right type of tyres for the purpose. “Selection of right tyres depends on factors like ground condition, application areas etc,” recommends A M Muralidharan, President, Volvo Construction Equipment – India. “For example, for aggregate and granite stone application in quarries, we generally suggest L4 tyres which are rough, thicker with higher wall thickness. For soft soil or in the normal earthwork condition, we suggest L2 or L3 type which is much lighter and damages also would be considerably less. In addition, we also look at the treads of tyres.”
Earthmoving equipment requires specialised tyres for various construction applications. While many types of equipment have continuous tracks applicable to more severe service requirements, tyres are used where greater speed or mobility is required. An understanding of what equipment will be used for the tires is required for proper selection. Tyre selection can have a significant impact on production and unit cost. There are three types of off-the-road tyres: transport for earthmoving machines, work for slow moving earth moving machines, and load and carry for transporting as well as digging. Tyres are a large expense on any construction project, so careful consideration should be given to prevent excessive wear or damage. “Understanding the application and service conditions such as terrain, load, speed and duty cycle are critical while selecting the right tyres for earthmoving equipment,” says Shyam Gyanani, Director, Trident International Pvt. Ltd. “Specific problems faced such 8

as frequent punctures, fast wear, tyre life are important considerations to minimise downtime, ensure safety and thus achieve optimum machine utilisation and capital efficiency. Based on this, one can select the correct type of tyre i.e. solid tyres, foam-filled tyres, semi-pneumatic tyres or pneumatic tyres for the job.
To suit various applications Off-the-road tyres commonly referred to as OTR include tyres for various applications like mining and quarrying, construction, underground operations, dam building, port operations etc. Sometimes, tyres for industrial applications are also included in the OTR category. With varied applications, OTR tyres require special construction features to meet specific job site conditions. For example, more heat resistant tread rubber is required for operations with long haulage cycles. Sharp rock service demands extra tread depth to minimise cutting. Soft underfoot or muddy conditions call for better than average traction. Unfortunately, improvements in one area of a tyre’s performance often result in compromise. For instance, providing compounds with increased resistance to tread wear typically results in reduced heat resistance. “Heat is a real threat to tyre life. Loads or speeds may have to be reduced to minimise heat generation. Otherwise, the tyre may suffer structural damage

After studying the application, the tyre manufacturer will suggest product that will match the actual as well as desirable operating conditions. Tyre specialists normally consider four major areas before making their recommendations, Mr Sengupta states the same: t 8JMM UIF UZSF ÜU t 8JMM JU DBSSZ UIF EFTJSFE MPBE t %FTJHO TVJUBCJMJUZ GPS VOEFSGPPU conditions t 8JMM UIF UZSF NFFU UIF QSPKFDU 5,1) 8$' SFRVJSFNFOUT After analysing all the above criteria, tyre manufacturer will then suggest the suitable tyre to the customer matching application. A typical suggestion for a 60 tonner (payload) rigid dump truck is illustrated here.
Geographical conditions Also, for better results, it is advised that one should use different tyres for different geographical conditions. “We choose high flotation tyres when the ground condition is very soft or in

case of sand application. There are three types of tyres namely rough condition HSBOJUF RVBSSZ UZSFT FBSUIXPSL UZSFT and soft ground condition tyres, explains Mr Muralidharan. Mr Gyanani also agrees on this line as he says, “Terrain and geographical conditions have a significant bearing on tyre life. One can select from standard, general purpose or extreme service tyres.
Some techniques TKPH rating: This is an important criterion to select an OTR tyre in haulage service. Tyres on OTR vehicles generate and build-up heat. The tire specialists/engineers can help to study the technical things including project TKPH rating and tyre application. Thereafter, they can guide a customer to select the right tyre based on application, believes Mr Sengupta.
Best maintenance practices After understanding the need to have right tyres, the next factor to be considered is the appropriate maintenance practices. Such offerings help build the faith and enhance the opportunities for the concerned industry players as well. “Many times we do supply tubeless tyres which are long lasting. We have been able to prove that they provide higher efficiency and better operation. At the same time, there are customers asking for tyres with the tubes and we cater to that option too. In Volvo, we just believe in offering the right tyres for right applications, says

Mr Muralidharan. “Importantly, the operators need to regularly check the air pressure and leakages, if any. Some tyres can also be filled with gas to give smoother operations. The storage of tyres is also very important. The shelf life of tyres is not like any other metals as they are made of rubber hence should not be stored in wet area or very hot climate. The best maintenance practices for earthmoving tyres vary depending on who’s asked. Getting the right OTR products for the job is critical for overall production. To make sure heavy equipment like earthmoving vehicles get products best suited for the current job the size and pressure rating must be determined. Once this is calculated, it’s best not to exceed the load weight in order to make them last longer. This decreases the chance of damage like deformation. Once the OTR earthmoving tyres are installed it’s important to check the tyre pressure regularly. The best time to do this is after the vehicle has been stopped and allowed to cool on a flat surface. If the earthmoving equipment can be parked in the shade it will speed up wait time. To ensure the right pressure is found, leave the vehicle for 24 hours before testing. It’s recommended that the pressure be checked every 30 days. This will help them wear evenly and avoid early damage. Driving with low pressure will increase the heat within the tyre which can become a major problem. Remember also to put the caps back on the valves in order to prevent air leaking out. Other things to remember with the best maintenance of earthmoving tyres include: t "EKVTU UIF QSFTTVSF JO SFMBUJPO UP IPX far an earthmoving vehicle is to travel as this will change according to the distance travelled t 3FHVMBSMZ DIFDL USFBE EFQUI t 3FBEKVTU UIF UJSF QSFTTVSF XIFO UIF load is removed for the trip back to the location of origin t %P OPU FYDFFE UIF TQFFE
recommended for the tyre t "MMPX UZSFT UP DPPM FWFSZ NJOVUFT during long hauls. These are some helpful tips on choosing the right earthmoving tyre and ways to make them last longer. Replacing earthmoving tyres is extremely expensive. Proper earthmoving tyre maintenance also decreases the chance at loss of life of other motorist or the driver. According to Mr Gyanani maintenance practices would depend on type of tyre selected. Solid, semi pneumatic and foam filled tyres require very little maintenance. However, for pneumatic tyres, overloading causes excessive heat build-up in tyres and may lead to premature failure. So it should be ensured that load is within machine specified parameters. Also when changing tyres, one needs to ensure that replacement tyres are of the correct load and speed rating and correct pattern. A vehicle should never run on one tyre of a dual assembly. In case of directional tyres, correct direction of rotation should be taken care of. In addition, following points are recommended: t 3FHVMBSMZ DIFDL BOE NBJOUBJO UIF correct tyre inflation pressure t 8IFO XPSLJOH JO IBSTI DPOEJUJPOT regular inspection to check for tyre damage and carcass integrity t " UVCF TIPVME OPU CF VTFE JO B UVCFMFTT tyre as an easy fix for a puncture or air leakage t 6OEFSTJ[FE SJNT TIPVME OPU CF VTFE Heating, welding or brazing a rim should be avoided.
End note Above all, choosing the right tyres for any equipment is very critical as it contributes to energy efficiency of the FRVJQNFOU JNNFOTFMZ 6TJOH XSPOH tyres leads to spending more energy to get productivity of the same machine. Earthmoving equipment, with their specific applications, would definitely deliver more efficient and reliable results provided right tyres are applied to them. „

xcavators are primarily designed for excavating with a bucket and are capable of operating speeds and movements. Excavators are used on slopes, rough terrain with attachment like bucket, rock breaker etc. Measures like levelling or compaction of ground, load bearing support should be taken into consideration to prevent instability and overturning of excavator. Moreover, when it comes to excavators in particular, the versatility of hydraulic excavators is remarkable in the world of construction equipment. Other than digging, one of the most frequent tasks performed by hydraulic excavators is lifting. As a result, understanding to lifting safely is a primary concern for every contractor who owns or operates a hydraulic excavator. “Hydraulic lift capacity and the tipping load define the rated lifting capacity of hydraulic excavator,” says Nischal Mehrotra, Director – Sales and Service, LiuGong India Pvt. Kobelco’s SK3500D: designed to meet complex demolition tasks K
obelco Construction Machinery has come up with its excavator mounted demolition machine manufactured by Kobelco Japan and being marketed through their Indian arm in India recently as one of the new and most advanced products from its range. Recent urban redevelopment and renewal of obsolete plants, such as iron foundries and power plants, is encountering structures, to be demolished, which are becoming taller and stronger making their demolition work complex and difficult. To overcome such difficulty, there is a need for large demolition machines and large attachments mounted to the machines. In response to such demands, Kobelco Construction Machinery has developed a demolition machine. There are two methods to demolish tall buildings and plants. One is to install a machine on a roof and demolish the structure from the roof downward. The other is a demolishing method from the ground, involving ultra-
long attachments extended from the ground. The later provides advantages in demolishing plants, such as iron foundries and power plants, having insufficient floor strength to install demolition machines on the roofs. Demolition work requires not only work efficiencies, but various other factors, such as short demolition periods, including assembly and disassembly of the machines, and safety for increasing high-place works.
Environment related needs, not only in the demolition work, are more and more diversifying and specific requirements are increasing. Kobelco will strive to produce unique products
*The and up are demolition machines used for buildings six-stories tall or higher.

INDUSTRY UPDATE
SDLG fleet goes beyond expectations at Indian seaport G
ujarat experiences diverse weather conditions with mild, dry winters, extremely hot summers (reaching over 49 C) and a wet and humid monsoon season. The climate provides the perfect conditions for over 400 species of tree to grow – including the most abundant, Neem. Swayam Shipping Services Pvt. Ltd. specialises in handling, storing and transporting Pine, Neem and hardwood timber logs at four ports along the 1,600-km Gujarat coastline using a fleet of five SDLG LG938L and five SDLG LG958 wheel loaders to move cargo for 10 hours a day. Swayam Shipping Services was founded 20 years ago and has since grown to be one of the region’s major players. And, over the years, careful handling of the timber has become more and more important. “Timber comes in various categories and can be hard or soft,” explains Keyur Thakrar, the company’s director. “Delicate handling is essential to ensure no damage is caused to the logs. Previously we were using big machines that were cumbersome and it took a long time to load and unload a vessel carefully. So when it came to changing our fleet, we took advice from our local dealer – Sarvajit Construction Equipment (CE) Services – to find a solution.” R Narasimhan, dealer principal at Sarvajit CE Services, advised Thakrar to use a smaller wheel loader and introduced him to the 3-tonne SDLG LG938L fitted with a locally sourced log grappler attachment. “It’s as though the machine was perfectly engineered for our site,” Thakrar continues. “It’s able to
handle both soft and hard timbers delicately – but importantly, the machines are still quick, reliable and efficient.”
Beyond the call of duty The 3-tonne LG938L wheel loader is designed to be agile, productive and fuel efficient, featuring the powerful and reliable German-designed Deutz 6.1 l tier IVi certified engine. The air-conditioned cab with AM/FM radio and USB interface is designed for operator comfort, whatever the weather. While the hydraulic quick coupler and in-cab activation switch allows the operator to switch easily and quickly from one attachment to another. “Sarvajit CE Services really does go beyond the call of duty to ensure our machines are kept up and running,” Thakrar explains. “Our first challenge we presented to them was our requirement for a full fuel tank to last 24 hours at a time – but this was no problem as Sarvajit ensured we had a fuel tank extension fitted.” The five LG938L wheel loaders have been in operation at the Swayam Shipping Services’ site for 16 months and have racked up over 16,000 operational hours between them. Thakrar confirms that they’ve experienced zero defects. In fact, he’s taken delivery of five more SDLG 5-tonne LG958 wheel loaders.

Kumbhojkar Cable Drag Chain
Kumbhojkar Plastic Moulders, a trusted name in engineering plastics, has developed product that is used in NC and CNC machines viz. cable drag chain. The product is designed, developed and manufactured by Kumbhojkar. Available in five sizes open type and three sizes in slide fit design (Design Regd. No.194396) the cable drag chain is made from modified polyamide material. The individual links can be easily press fitted with hand as per the length requirement. The chain is available with metal clamps. Enclosed electric cables, pneumatic hoses, coolant hoses, etc. move along with the drag chain that moves to and fro with the moving parts of the machine. This improves the life of the enclosed cables or hoses by avoiding direct stretching. Usually one end is fitted on the machine bed with end clamps and the other end is fitted to the moving part of the machine. Kumbhojkar recommends that in case the length of the cable drag chain is more, cable guides should be used. So that the drag chain while returning to its position seats in between the guides. „

then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted into place. In contrast, standard concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site. By producing precast concrete in a controlled environment (typically referred to as a precast plant), the precast concrete is properly cured. Utilising a precast concrete system offers many potential advantages over site casting of concrete. The production process for precast concrete is performed on ground level, which helps with safety throughout a project. There is a greater control of the quality of materials and workmanship in a precast plant rather than on a construction site.
Application areas Concrete is one of the most widely used materials in the world. Using precast concrete all different kinds of structures can and have been built in almost every
part of the world. These range from villas to high rises and from culverts to bridges. Precast products such as architectural cladding, structural components, bridge components etc. are used widely in every part of the world. “Specifically in building construction, in India also, more and more developers, builders and contractors are adopting precast concrete technology, says Chander Dutta, Managing Director, Elematic India. Today there are many examples of villas, mid rise, high rise apartment buildings, and commercial buildings such as malls, industrial buildings etc. in various parts of India. environment friendly structures should also be taken into consideration.” However according to Mr Chougle, high demand for housing, schools projects, increasing power and other infrastructure projects, stadiums and hotels etc. are definitely increasing demand of precast. Requirement of fewer resources for precast projects is also a factors driving demand of precast. “The precast industry requires substantial investment in production plant setup, transport and installation cranes etc, as well as a skilled manpower, which is very much unlike mass labour requirement in the conventional cast in place construction,” says Mr Bhate. “Mechanisation plays a very important part of this process which may be the major cost, though precast industries can also start small time with zero mechanisation and at a very low cost.”
Challenges Srinivas Rohidas, Manager – Structures, PRECA Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., points out some challenges as he says, “Nonavailability of skilled manpower and local machinery are some of the issues. Infrastructure bottlenecks including logistical issues, shortage of high capacity cranes for handling and erection of elements and breaking mindset of structural engineers and clients are major challenges.” “The biggest bottleneck in the implementation of precast technology
“The main challenge for precast industry in India is low awareness of precast. Much efforts are required to be done to educate the industry leaders, architects, engineers and other construction professionals about advantages of precast and it’s optimum utilisation for of projects,” adds Mr Chougle. Another challenge is transportation and availability of high capacity cranes required for precast installations. The precast industry has not gained a strong foothold in India only due to the fact that there are not too many players willing to explore the technology. There are virtually no reasons for hindrance of growth, other than ignorance and impractical approaches. Whereas Mr Bhate says, “Our strategy is to first internally get a strong foothold on basic constraints of any new technology industry – in this case, structural design and analysis; production methodology, quality controls, good planning and monitoring of products, technically correct matters regarding testing of elements; in lifting insert positions, safe installation, developing of internal resources like automatic production machinery for various items, mechanisations, handling equipments like tower cranes etc.” It is observed that available IS codes do not provide sufficient information for designing various precast structures ranging from mid to high rise. There is still a high dependency on foreign codes such as American code, New Zealand code, European code etc. However, work is in progress to produce precast design handbook for practicing structural engineers.

Insulation
How to select proper rigid roof insulation system
Rigid roof insulation is a critical component to consider when selecting a roofing system for building. This article examines considerations for selecting a roof insulation system and available product options
T
oday the insulation layers have become an integral part of the roof assembly and must function in concert with the roof membrane and the structural deck. Wise choices result in successful roof systems that perform over the long term. Poor choices can negatively impact roof performance, possibly within a short time after the roof’s installation.
To have an effective insulation system that facilitates proper roof performance is fundamental, but is only one of the factors to keep in mind when it comes to roof insulation. Roof insulation selection must also consider the thermal needs of the building, satisfy applicable energy codes, and result in a roof assembly that is approved by the property insurance carrier.
Selecting an appropriate insulation system
roof
There are certainly some considerations for selecting a roof insulation system. Selecting an optimised roof insulation system is essential to achieve better and efficient results. However, there is, obviously, not a single factor to determine the same.
In all cases, it should be understood that effective water proofing is a major fundamental requisite in any roof insulation system.

It should essentially be fire safe.” Some of the other elements to be taken into account include the supporting, anchoring or adhering arrangement, air barriers/vapour retarder, noise barriers, if any, water proofing and its compatible substrate, outer load bearing/wearing/aesthetic surface finish. “A roof insulation system needs to be selected based on some particular criteria,” says Biswajit Roy, Manager – Building Solution, U P Twiga Fiberglass Ltd. and explains as follows: t "JS DPOEJUJPOFE PS OPO BJS DPOEJUJPOFE or mixed type of building t 5IFSNBM USBOTNJTTJPO WBMVF PG SPPG considered for heat load calculation t Required fire safety standard to be adhered to: for example, FM approval for roofing structure or Class 0 surfaces as per The Building Regulation 2000 t Acoustic rating required: STC value of the roofing or absorption (NRC value) requirement against hailstorm/rain t Aesthetic requirement of the roofing: interior view. per aesthetic requirement t Overall design of the roofing: single skin, double skin, standing seam, membrane roofing etc. Moreover, correct choice of insulation technique requires many more points to be considered right at the beginning of design work. Mr Srinivas elaborates the same: t Type of building: industrial / commercial or residential. t The substrate or the structure on which it is to be deployed: is the insulation system to be placed over a concrete slab already provided or is it to be built up over a structural frame? t 5IF MPDBUJPO UIF XJOE WFMPDJUZ EBUB and the shape of roof to determine the wind uplift forces to be countered t Climatic data of the location where the building is situated: summer, winter ambient temperatures and rainfall intensity to be considered t Nature of use to which the completed roof is to be put: It could be used as an accessed terrace on which normal foot traffic is expected or the user may want to feature a green roof t The colour, texture and aesthetics of the outer finish: particularly if architectural design features sections of finished roofing which are visible.
Some other considerations Many concepts involve choosing
individual elements capable of performing each of the duties listed above to the degree required and assembled in-situ to be deployed as a built up assembly. In all such cases, a major consideration involves compatibility of each item with others apart from practical aspects related to TJUF XPSL JOWPMWFE 5IJT FYFSDJTF DPVQMFE with commercial considerations, would result in an optimised short list. Factory finished prefabricated building elements combine many major GVODUJPOT UPHFUIFS 5IFTF DPODFQUT reduce site activity considerably and BSF UIFSFGPSF QSFGFSSFE UPEBZ 5IF TQFFE of work and quality premium afforded work are in their favour. “In all cases, it should be understood that effective water proofing is a major fundamental requisite in any roof insulation system. Failure of this element even over a small area can result in total failure of the entire system, says Mr Srinivas. Fire safety is another major consideration while evaluating any completed system. Assemblies are tested and benchmarked in respect of their capacity to maintain integrity while resisting local incidence of fire and their ability to prevent spread of fire over the roof surface.

Furniture effects on interiors: must guard the internal air quality Reclassification of formaldehyde by the international agency for research on cancer as carcinogenic to humans has triggered enormous concern globally. Lack of awareness in India on the formaldehyde emissions from UF bonded panels is even more worrisome
T
he furniture is a functionally needed utility value keeping in view the ergonomic design for good working conditions. Good lighting and aesthetics enhance the interiors. One of the most neglected aspects in India is the awareness to keep the level of formaldehyde emissions to acceptable level in the office or home interiors released from the furniture, more particularly the formaldehyde emissions from the wood panels used in the fabrication of furniture like plywood, blockboard, particleboard and medium density fibreboards (MDF).
Why formaldehyde emission is so critical and important? Formaldehyde exposure potentially cause a variety of symptoms and adverse health effects, such as eye, nose, throat, and skin irritation, coughing, wheezing, and allergic reactions. Long-term exposure to high levels of formaldehyde has been associated with cancer in humans. Formaldehyde can affect people differently. Some people are very sensitive to formaldehyde at a certain level while others may not have any noticeable reaction to the same level. What affects formaldehyde levels in indoor air? Formaldehyde levels in indoor air can vary depending on temperature, humidity, and air exchange rate within the indoor space. In addition, several studies have shown that, in the presence of ozone, formaldehyde levels increase; therefore, the outdoor and indoor ozone levels are also relevant. Formaldehyde levels in internal office or home spaces may change with the season, day-to-day, and day-tonight. Levels may be high on a hot and humid day and low on a cool, dry day. What are the major sources of indoor formaldehyde emissions in our offices or homes today? Measuring formaldehyde emissions from individual consumer products is difficult because a variety of products in the office or homes can release formaldehyde or trap formaldehyde emitted from other sources. Products with greater emissions and larger surface areas in the office or homes will most likely have a greater contribution to indoor air formaldehyde levels. Keep this in mind when prioritizing the different product types below. Pressed-wood and wood-based products: Pressed-wood (i.e., hardwood plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard (MDF)) and wood-based products, especially those

Re-emitters: Because they are porous, products, such as carpets or gypsum board, do not contain significant amounts of formaldehyde when new. However, they may trap formaldehyde that is emitted into the air from other products and later release it into the indoor air.
What are some of the symptoms and potential adverse health effects of formaldehyde exposure? Formaldehyde exposure can cause a variety of symptoms and potential adverse health effects. A person’s ability to smell a chemical odour, such as formaldehyde, does not always mean that the levels of the chemical are of concern or will cause an adverse health effect. Therefore, some people can smell formaldehyde before being adversely affected by it. Chembond offers its way to repair cracks using epoxy resins C
oncretes based on hydraulic binders such as ordinary portland cement have a common tendency to crack. Cracks may appear in a floor slab, foundation, basement slab, roof slabs a beam or a column. These cracks may affect structural, aesthetical or environmental performance of the utility. This creates a need to treat these cracks carefully, with proper materials and techniques. There are a number of methods and techniques which are developed by the construction industry to such cracks. However, crack injection using either epoxy resin or polyurethane resin based grouts, is considered as one of the most effective techniques. In order to decide whether to use crack injection, it is important to understand the cracking in a particular place or structure in detail. Further need is to understand whether the crack is structural or non-structural i.e. on a non-load bearing element. If the crack is subject to subsequent movement, an epoxy repair may not be suitable.
Structural crack repair using epoxy resins The injection procedure depends on the application and location of the crack(s). Horizontal, vertical and overhead cracks need different approaches. Size and accessibility of the crack shall also be considered. Depending on the specific requirements of the job, crack repair by epoxy injection can restore structural integrity and reduce moisture

penetration through concrete cracks 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) in width and greater (ACI RAP Bulletin 1). ACI has given a complete procedure for structural crack repair, in ACI RAP Bulletin 1.
Surface preparation As for all repair procedures, surface preparation is the key to crack injection. Depending on the condition and location of cracks, it must be cleaned from foreign matter and any loose or damaged concrete shall be removed. The surface where the injection takes place must be strong to take the pressure of the injected resin. Proper sealing of crack surface is necessary to avoid losses during injection. Follow the instructions, given in the manufacturer’s product literature. Selecting the right material Material selection is critical. Moisture tolerant epoxies are required in damp conditions. Sometimes initial polyurethane injection or use of cement based water plugs may be necessary to stop the flow of water. ACI RAP Bulletin 1, ASTM C-881 would help in making correct decision. Air assisted guns, hand actuated delivery systems, and spring or balloon actuated capsules are suggested by ACI.
Repair procedure The procedure begins with the installation of injection ports at proper spacing generally at 40 mm in centre.
Wider crack may have longer spacing. Cracks are then sealed through its length with suitable sealing material. If a crack penetrates completely through a section, then both sides need to be sealed for best results. Epoxy, polyester, cement, Silone based materials, may be used for this purpose. Injection is carried out after the cap seal is set. On horizontal places, the injection shall be started at the widest section. Vertical cracks are injected from the bottom up. Generally cracks are injected until the material flows out from the adjacent port or until refusal. Smaller cracks may require higher pressure. After the injection is complete, the ports are removed. The cap seal may be completely removed using suitable procedure such as grinding or left in place, if it is not objectionable. The success of this repair may be verified by taking cores at suitable places or by non-destructive testing such as impact echo, ultrasonic pulse velocity or spectral analysis of surface waves. „

Epoxy injection and repair of structures When it comes to structure, strengthening epoxy grouts plays an important role. STP Ltd. has a range of epoxy grouts which are used for different applications, especially in repairs segment
E
poxy injections are generally used to repair cracks in structural concrete in the process restoring structural integrity while preventing ingress of moisture. The process involves sealing of the crack surface with an epoxy paste followed by the injection of low viscosity two part resins through ports placed strategically on the surface of the crack. The types of epoxy, equipment utilised and the method of repair are dependent upon the application. Epoxy injection provides a permanent repair to structural cracks in concrete and masonry. Added benefits are that it aids in the waterproofing of a structure by preventing leaks through the cracks and prevents moisture from corroding steel. The success of repair and rehabilitation of structures depends on the specific plans designed for it. STP Ltd. has been associated with repair and rehabilitation of numerous structures.
Reasons for distress The basic distresses are cracks and spallings. The reasons for these distresses are due to aggressive chemicals ingress inside the concrete structure. The water penetration helps corrosion of the steel reinforcement. As the rust has more volume then the original steel bar, the rust causes tension in the surrounding concrete.

As the cover of concrete is limited on the outer side, the resultant tensile force causes cracks formation and the crack permit more easier entry of water and oxygen to form more rusting. This leads to more increase in volume and also the cracks in concrete get wider and wider. The surrounding concrete becomes partly disintegrated which finally causes spalling. The porosity of the surrounding concrete also plays an important part. ShaliGrout EI of STP is 100 per cent reactive, two component epoxy injection grout designed as a moisture insensitive adhesive for numerous injection and sealing needs. Surface preparation Surface must be strong, dry, free from dust, oil, grease, curing compounds, coatings and other loose materials. Nozzles should be fixed by drilling of holes into the crack of diameter more than the grouting nipples, drilling up to a depth of at least 1/3rd of structural member. Then fixing injection nozzles in to the drill holes at the intervals along the length of the crack should be done. The distance between each nipple will depend on width and depth of crack. consultant in metal finishing products manufacturing having work experience of over 35 years. He has several products to offer for corrosion protection of steel fabrications. Promtech recommends following products and the process sequence:
RUSTOGEL 1406: rust remover Rust is a sub surface phenomenon and hence needs to be attended in a very scientific manner. All shortcuts in pre-cleaning and pre-treatment will eventually lead to failure of final coating and re-rusting. The first step shall be removal of existing rust (lose or adherent) from the metal surface. The methods adapted for this process is to treat the entire surface to be cleaned with RUSTOGEL 1406. This is a light green, phosphoric acid based de-rusting gel. This is offered in a gel format so that it stands on the vertical surface. The minimum reaction time for rust removal shall be 10 – 15 minutes. Second application, if necessary, may be done at an interval of 2 hours. RUSTOFIX 1411: rust converter, rust preventive & premium grade primer RUSTOFIX 1411 is an off-white, emulsion type of liquid, applied by brushing or spraying as supplied. Rustofix -1411 leaves a brownishblackish polymerised air dried film which converts the adherent rust into a neutral complex of iron, form a rust preventive film and offers a primer coating with good hiding property. This will have an excellent adhesion to the base metal and to all synthetic paint / finish coats to follow. ZINKOTE -20 Premium & ZINKOTE 20 GP: zinc rich paint coating ZINKOTE 20 is a quick air drying zinc flakes rich paint. Its single application offers a 25 microns coating. On cleaned,

Samafit VK is a two pack waterproofing and sealing system for permanently solving the persistent capillarybased rising dampness in the superstructure. Rising dampness brings with it, dissolved salts and chemicals and results in peeling of plasters, paints and acceleration of rotting of wood in affected areas. Rising dampness is on the account of failure of Damp Proofing Course (DPC) or its absence. Old structures and monuments built several years back and with unconventional building materials are more prone to rising dampness. Samafit VK system eliminates rising dampness by sealing the capillaries in the structure and providing an impermeable barrier to the passage of water by converting the hygroscopic capillaries to hydrophobic by the process of silicification. The two components of Samafit VK react in the capillaries and form a gel product, which makes the capillaries non wettable. Therefore water does not rise in the capillaries against gravity and therefore prevents rising dampness. The two components of SamafitVK should be introduced separately into the structure through zigzag pre-drilled holes, after a small time gap. Samafit VK thus protects the structures from dampness, and the associated moss, fungus and root growth. The walls are rendered dry for better plastering and painting. Samafit VK can be effectively used for masonry superstructures, unconventional porous construction materials, old structures, monuments, for structures in built in high water tables and to prevent the rising dampness occurring due to splashing rains in the lower unprotected zones. Using UV disinfection to ensure bio-security in pharma, F&B industries Pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries need to meet stringent standards on water quality and bio-security. UV is ideal for such applications as it is both effective and chemical-free
T
he pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries are unique in that their products are either consumed directly or are used in products that are actively consumed by people. In an increasingly regulated and safety-conscious market, these industries have to meet ever more stringent standards on water quality and bio-security. It is vital to treat the water used in the manufacturing process to remove toxins, biohazards and any unwanted organic materials, while at the same time not incurring any residual taste, colour or reagents that could affect another part of the downstream process. In these industries the ‘raw’ potable water they source at the start of the process may not be completely free of biochallenges, as needed for their individual processes, resulting in active growth of microorganisms to harmful levels. UV is ideal for these applications as

it is both effective and chemical-free. It eliminates all known pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, yeasts and moulds (and their spores) and is low maintenance and environmentally friendly.
The importance of bio-security Bio-security is very important to understand from both the supplier and customer perspective. It is a fine balancing act between providing an appropriately-sized treatment system on the one hand while ensuring viable cost of ownership on the other. Where a UV system is required to target a specific bacteria, virus or other bio-hazard, the precise minimum dose needed to achieve the required reduction of that hazard must be well characterised and monitored in delivery. Three general types of system can be used for this task: t 7FSZ DPTU FòFDUJWF TZTUFNT NPOJUPSFE
for a minimum lamp intensity that achieve a minimum delivered dose which is not defined t $PTU FòFDUJWF TZTUFNT UIBU IBWF CFFO referenced to known validations and therefore offer an assured bio-security, but without the absolute cost of a full validation t $PTUMZ TZTUFNT UIBU IBWF CFFO GVMMZ validated to monitor the precise dose delivered and the power of the system controlled to continually deliver that required dose.

making them unable to reproduce and effectively killing them. A typical UV disinfection system for process water or liquid ingredient consists of a UV lamp housed in a protective quartz sleeve and mounted within a cylindrical stainless steel chamber. The liquid to be treated enters at one end and passes along the entire length of the chamber before exiting at the other end. Virtually any liquid can be effectively treated with UV, including raw mains water, filtered process water, viscous sugar syrups, beverages and effluent. There are no microorganisms known to be resistant to UV; this includes pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria, Legionella and Cryptosporidium (and its spores, which are resistant to chlorination).
UV dose The irradiated UV dose necessary for microbial deactivation varies from one species to another and is measured in millijoules per square centimetre (mJ/ cm2). Values for specific microorganisms have been experimentally established and are used to determine the type and size of UV system required. The dose received by an organism in a UV treatment system is dependent on five main factors: 1. The energy output of the UV source 2. The flow rate of the fluid through the treatment chamber 3. The transmission value (ability to transmit UV light) of the fluid being treated 4. The geometry of the treatment chamber 5. The chemistry of the water.
low pressure and medium pressure. Low pressure lamps have a ‘monochromatic’ UV output (limited to a single wavelength at 254 nm), whereas medium pressure lamps have a ‘polychromatic’ UV output (between 185-400 nm). As UV has no residual effect, the best position for a treatment system is immediately prior to the point of use. This ensures incoming microbiological contaminants are destroyed and there is a minimal chance of post-treatment contamination.
UV applications in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries Direct contact water Although municipal water supplies are normally free from harmful or pathogenic microorganisms, this should not be assumed. In addition, water from private sources such as natural springs or boreholes could also be contaminated. Any water used as an ingredient, or that comes in direct contact with the product, can therefore be a source of contamination. UV disinfects this water without chemicals or pasteurisation. It also allows the re-use of process water, saving money and improving productivity without risking the quality of the product. CIP (Clean-in-Place) rinse water It is essential that the CIP final rinse water used to flush out foreign matter and disinfecting solutions is microbiologically safe. Fully automated UV disinfection systems can be integrated with CIP rinse cycles to ensure final rinse water does not reintroduce microbiological contaminants.
By optimising these criteria, a UV system can be tailored to effectively treat large or small flows, as well as viscous fluids or those containing dissolved solids and high levels of starch or sugar compounds.
Filter disinfection Reverse osmosis (RO) and granular activated carbon (GAC) are often used to filter process water, but can be a breeding ground for bacteria. UV is an effective way of disinfecting both stored RO and GAC filtered water and has been used in the process industries for many years.
UV technologies There are two main types of UV technology based on the UV lamps used:
GAC filters are also often used to dechlorinate process water, removing the ‘off’ flavours often associated with
60
B2B PURCHASE
September 2014
chlorine disinfection, meaning the flavour of the final product remains untainted and free from unwanted flavours or odours. Placing UV systems ahead of GAC filters used for dechlorination improves the performance of the filters and results in longer carbon runs, so decreasing operating costs. As the usual dose for removing free chlorine is 15 to 30 times higher than the normal disinfection dose, an important additional benefit of using UV dechlorination is a high level of UV disinfection, reduction in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and improved overall water quality at point-of-use. TOC reduction Short UV wavelengths (below 200 nm) are highly effective at breaking down organic molecules present in water, commonly known as Total Organic Carbon (TOC), especially low molecular weight contaminants. This works in two ways: the first method is by direct photolysis, when energy from the UV actually breaks down chemical bonds within the organics; the second method is by the photolysis of water molecules, splitting them to create charged OHradicals, which also attack the organics. Cooling media and chiller disinfection Some meat and dairy products are subject to contamination after heat treatment or cooking. UV provides an excellent way to protect foods from contamination by contact-cooling fluids. Sugar syrups Sugar syrups can be a prime breeding ground for microorganisms. Although syrups with very high sugar content do not support microbial growth, any dormant spores may become active after the syrup has been diluted. Treating the syrup and dilution water with UV prior to use will ensure any dormant microorganisms are deactivated. Liquid sweeteners Sucrose-based sweeteners can be a prime breeding ground for microorganisms. UV systems are available specifically for treating these syrups.
TECHNOLOGY De-aerated liquor De-aerated liquor is added as part of a high gravity brewing process, often in the packaging operation. This liquor is added directly to the beer so needs to be kept free from contamination by gram negative bacteria, which can cause offflavours and acidity. Yeast preparation The problems associated with yeast preparation in breweries are well recognised and include hazes, altered fermentation and surface membranes on packaged beer. A single cell of Sacchoromyces (var. Turbidans) in 16 million cells of pitching yeast will cause detectable hazes. UV destroys all known yeasts and their spores. Waste water Effluent from pharmaceutical, food and beverage facilities can be treated without the use of environmentally hazardous chemicals. This ensures all discharges meet with local environmental regulations. As already mentioned, because process water can
be treated and re-used with UV, this also leads to a significant reduction in the amount of waste water produced.
Ongoing Research As part of its ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of UV science, Hanovia recently opened a UV Application Centre in Shanghai, China. Serving as an R&D centre of excellence for research into the science of UV for new and emerging applications worldwide, the centre will directly support existing and future requirements in Hanovia’s traditional markets for food & beverage, pharmaceutical and high purity water. Working in collaboration with leading universities from around the world, such as Imperial College in London and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, as well as some of the leading global brands in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage industry, the centre is already enhancing our understanding of UV efficiency in the control and destruction of inorganic compounds.
Industrial
“The centre is completely customerdriven and is set up with a very clear mission: to develop UV application science that our customers actually need and to answer those searching questions that only empirical test work can answer,” comments Hanovia’s Technical Director Dr. Mark Aston. “This means working as a partner with our customers to push the boundaries of UV science and align our product range with their existing and future needs. This will directly help them achieve their primary goal of meeting all necessary quality standards with ever increasing efficiency and security.” The centre’s Principal Engineer, Dr Elaine Feng, added, “Why speculate about UV performance for a new application when a series of targeted experiments will bring certainty to UV performance and efficiency? We believe our investment in the science will allow our customers to enjoy scientific rigour in their process development, gaining the peace of mind that comes with the hands on experience of moving from bench top to pilot to full scale.”

Titrator with a 40,000 step burette dosing pump from Hanna Instruments Hanna Instruments announced the launch of two new automatic titration systems utilising an industry first 40,000 step dosing pump
Hanna
Instruments launched HI 903 Karl Fischer Volumetric Titrator and HI 902C2 two-channel Potentiometric Titrators. Designed to streamline and simplify the titration process, these two units offer an excellent balance of features, accuracy and price. The HI 903 Karl Fischer Volumetric Titrator conducts moisture analysis, combining an ultra-precise titrant delivery system with a magnetic stirrer, sophisticated endpoint determination and background drift correction algorithm. The titrant delivery system is capable of dosing as little as 0.125 μL of titrant maintaining a minimal amount of drift rate. The HI 903 also features a 61
unique anti-diffusion tip preventing unwanted diffusion of titrant into the solvent. These features allow for a 0.1 per cent accuracy when measuring water content from 100 ppm to 100 per cent. The HI 902 Potentiometric Titrator supports two analog inputs allowing sequential titrations to be performed with different sensors for the precise analysis of acid/base, ISE, Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), and complexometric reactions. The HI 902 uses the same 40,000 step dosing pump as the HI 903 for the precise dosing of titrant used in end point determination. Both titrators offer Hanna’s unique “Clip LockTM” Exchangeable Burette system for quickly and easily swapping burettes with reagents used to perform different titrations. The Clip Lock system prevents cross contamination since a separate burette can be used for each titrant. Having the ability to swap burettes reduces the time it takes to change reagents for a separate titration since the titrant does not have to be purged from the burette. The other advantage of the Clip Lock Exchangeable Burette system is the ability to utilise burettes of different sizes (5, 10, and 25 mL) allowing
for flexibility in the accuracy (0.1 per cent full burette volume) and the minimum amount of titrant that is dosed. Each unit offers a large, easy to navigate colour LCD and can be connected to a PC using Hanna software. At the end of titration, all data is automatically stored in memory and can be copied via the included USB flash drive or through direct connection to a PC.
