A great nuclear leap forward Signalling its intent to fast-track domestic nuclear power programme and give a push to country’s nuclear industry, the Indian government has announced its plan to set up 10 indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR). According to the Power Ministry, the new plants would create ` 70,000 crore worth of business for domestic manufacturers and generate more than 33,400 jobs in direct and indirect employment. The latest initiative will not only ensure self-sufficiency but also secures India’s position as a potential exporter. “With manufacturing orders to domestic industry, it will be a major step towards strengthening India’s credentials as a major nuclear manufacturing powerhouse,” Power Minister Piyush Goyal said. Industry leaders have welcomed this decision. Terming the move as ‘bold and historic’, SN Roy, Wholetime Director, Larsen & Toubro said, “This decision, which envisages an investment of around ` 1,05,000 crore is another step forward in the ‘Make in India’ initiative and will give a major boost to the Indian industry.” He adds that the decision will further enable Indian industry to mature to global standards and in the process develop and nurture Indian skill and talent in the nuclear sector. Sanjay Kirloskar, Chairman & Managing Director of Kirloskar Brother Limited said, “For a power-deficient country like India, this is a great development and we are looking forward to the implementation of this project. We are confident that the new indigenously-developed nuclear power plants will go a long way in reducing the perennial energy deficit that the country has been living with.” At present, India has installed nuclear power capacity of 6,780 MW from 22 operational plants. Another 6,700 MWs of nuclear power is expected to come on stream by 2021-22 through projects presently under construction. Setting up of 10 more PHWR with a generation capacity of 7,000 MW within five years will bring about a renewed vigour in the country’s power generation sector. POWER UPDATE ABB India expands footprint with service center for energy saving The ABB remote service center will provide 24x7 access to information and support on drives installed at customer facilities for predictive maintenance and condition monitoring for all industries including power, cement, oil and gas, metals, ABB Global Remote Service Center for digitally enabled food & beverage and many drives with ABB AbilityTM Condition Monitoring solution other applications. The new center is the third of its kind in the ABB global footprint and is now fully activated in India. It will support customer installations in India and around the world. In India, 31 per cent of total electrical energy is consumed by industrial motors. Drives control the speed of these motors and hence are a key component of enabling energy efficiency and improving productivity. Benefits of such a remote center include faster identification of potential problems leading to increased uptime of customer assets and ultimately savings in operational costs. “This is a reinforcement of our commitment to our nation and customers by establishing a world-class center using our expertise in digitally enabled technology,” said Sanjeev Sharma, CEO and Managing Director, ABB India. The new production line manufactures digitally enabled low voltage drives ACS560 and ACS580 series. The drive information in the cloud can be accessed securely with daily devices like smartphones. Drives are an environmentally friendly option to use energy efficiently while

running motors based on their current load instead of running them on full speed continuously. These drives provide multiple energy optimisation features, are easily commissioned via smartphone, and include features for uninterrupted operations during power fluctuations. “ACS560 has been developed in India for Indian customers, having user interface in Hindi and energy calculator in Indian Rupees. The new drive has application macros for industries like plastic, textile water and pharma, and unique icon based display for quick commissioning fulfilling the requests of Indian customers”, said Morten Wierod, Managing Director of ABB’s global Drives business unit.

India, China surpass US in renewable energy attractiveness index India and China have surpassed the US at the top of the latest EY Renewable energy country attractiveness index (RECAI). The fall – the first for the US since 2015 – to third in the ranking of the top 40 countries follows a marked shift in US policy under the new administration. India continued its upward trend in the index to second position with the Government’s program to build 175GW in renewable energy generation by 2022 and to have renewable energy account for 40 per cent of installed capacity by 2040. The country has added more than 10GW of solar capacity in the last three years – starting from a low base of 2.6GW in 2014. POWER UPDATE Modi calls for setting up model solar cities Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the setting up of some model solar cities in the country where the power requirement is fulfilled solely by solar energy. He made this proposal while reviewing the progress of key infrastructure sectors including petroleum and natural gas, power, renewable energy and housing. The review meeting, which came soon after the review of connectivityrelated infrastructure sectors in the last week of April, was attended by top officials from PMO, NITI Aayog and all infrastructure Ministries of the Government of India. The PM also emphasised that manufacturing of solar equipment should be given priority, to drive employment generation, and derive maximum benefit from the renewable energy drive. According to a PMO release, the total renewable generation capacity has crossed 57 GW, with an increase of 24.5 per cent being registered in 2016-17. The capacity addition in solar energy in 2017-18 was the highest-ever, at 81 per cent. Solar and wind tariffs have now achieved grid parity, with rates well below ` 4 per KwH.

CMI bags ` 36 cr order for supply of cables to GETCO CMI Limited, a BSE & NSE listed cable company, has been awarded an order worth ` 36.24 crore by Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) for supply of 66KV XLPE cables. The order is revenue accretive and will be delivered within two quarters of 2017-18. CMI Limited recently started commercial production at its newly acquired facility at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, which was a subsidiary of General Cable Corporation, a fortune 500 company. The cables for the new order will also be manufactured at the new facility. Amit Jain, CMD, CMI limited said, “We are becoming a preferred partner for wires and cables for the utilities, including the power sector covering both transmission and distribution. Currently over 12 per cent of our total revenues come from the power sector and we expect that around 15 per cent of our revenues by 2019 will be from the segment. Our latest order from GETCO is another feather in our cap and we are going from strength to strength here.”

Siemens digital solutions to connect Vedanta power plants in India Siemens Limited has announced that it has secured an order for Digital Fleet Center solution from Vedanta Limited, India’s natural resources company, to connect its power plant assets at Talwandi Sabo Power Plant (TSPL) in Punjab and Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) in Chhattisgarh. he Indian electrical equipment industry comprises of two broad segments – generation equipment and transmission and distribution (T&D) and allied equipment. The generation equipment sector stands for around 28 per cent while the T&D equipment sector accounts for close to 72 per cent of the total industry size.

Power-evacuation constraints and high T&D losses have attracted the attention of policymakers for more investment in transmission infrastructure to match the investment in power generation. The outlook for the transmission sector for the next 5-7 years is bright, forecasts Sharan Bansal, Director, Skipper Ltd. He said, “The growth trajectory of the transmission industry is based on the facts such as increased emphasis on the grid reliability, decentralisation of the power generation due to increased focus on the renewable apart from the fossil fuel, and the increase in load centres arising from the urbanisation and major thrust on rural electrification.”

He adds, “A lot of smart technologies are being deployed to ensure that the traditional thermal generation, the transmission and also the intermittent renewable in different parts of the country can be integrated into the grid. A lot of smart technologies are being deployed and we are seeing a good uptick there.” At the end of 12th Five -Year Plan, 42 per cent growth in the transmission line capacity addition is expected and 69 per cent in the substation capacity. By the end of 12th FiveYear Plan it is expected that the national grid inter regional power transfer capacity will be 72,250 MW. The government is also targeting to bring down T&D losses in the power sector to 15 per cent by 2019 from over 20 per cent currently. Such severe electricity losses during the T&D process affect the country’s economic growth adversely, which is why India requires infusion of large amount of capital and modern technology into the Indian power T&D sector. The government is focusing more on T&D sector especially in the smart grid and ultra high voltage segment. “We believe power saved is power generated and we are constantly undertaking our role in reducing the losses. While sharing his views on the power T&D industry in India, Harish Agarwal, CEO, Supreme & Co Pvt Ltd says, “In the context of discoms, the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) already has 27 member states that are ushering in operational and financial efficiency within their discoms. Aggregate technical and Commercial Losses (AT&C) have come down from 24 per cent in FY16 to 22 per cent by April this year. The gap between the average cost of supply (ACS) and average revenue realised per unit sale came down to ` 0.4 per unit by December last year from ` 0.56 per unit in March the same year.” Agarwal adds, “Although total sales of the industry in FY16 grew up by around 1 per cent from FY15, industry seemed to have squeezed their margins on account of low priced imports and tough competition in global market. The T&D sector globally is expected to attract investment of $1 trillion over next 5-7 years. Indian power sector is witnessing massive transformation in terms of implementation of policy, technology upgradation and investments in the renewable sectors to harness the potential of natural sources of energy. “India is already self-sufficient in terms of energy generation and is contributing to the export of power to neighbouring countries which is opening up huge potential in the T&D sector. With the ‘Make in India’ thrust, the manufacturing sector will see huge opportunities in new technology development, building up manufacturing base to cater to the global markets and claim global leadership. This needs manufacturing sector to develop high quality process and norms which shall meet the global standard to make the grid reliable, safe and affordable. TTDI is positioning to address the above markets by offering complete products and solutions which are energy efficient and highly reliable to the grid. In line with its ‘Make in India and Export from India’ commitment, the company made a 3-billion Yen investment (approximately $ 30-million) in 2016. It also boosted production capacity for transformers by 50 per cent by setting up a new manufacturing line for Ultra High Voltage transformers up to 1,200 kV and improving manufacturing and operational efficiency of distribution transformers. In the field of switchgears also, the company established a new line for production of Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS) and Solid Insulated Switchgears (SIS). This expansion allowed TTDI to meet the growing demand in India and in countries across the world. With the government’s ambitious plans to install 100 GW of solar power capacity by 2022 and 10 GW of wind power every year, evacuation of this power will be a challenge. Realising this, the central transmission utility, Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), is developing nine high capacity green transmission corridors. The government has also announced a Desert Power Plan, which outlines the transmission capacity needed to evacuate solar and wind power from the desert regions of India by 2050. India is planning to construct several crossborder interconnections with its neighbouring countries to boost power trade. These links are part of the country’s larger plan of creating an integrated SAARC power market. Four new interconnections – one each with Bhutan and Sri Lanka and two with Nepal – are either under way or at the planning stage. “The changing requirements of the transmission system are driving technology developments in the area. Excelling in global level Power is a scarce commodity and a large part of the globe still faces shortage of power. With rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, the demand for power is growing day by day necessitating substantial investments in power generation and T&D infrastructure. Despite several improvements in power infrastructure, around 17 per cent of the world population is still without access to electricity. Global transmission towers market has grown historically and is set for a strong growth in the future as well. According to World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2015, a total of $19.7 trillion investments are expected to flow in the power sector between 2015 and 2040, averaging $760 billion per year. The global electric power transmission network is set to expand from 5.5 million circuit kilometres (ckm) of high voltage transmission lines in 2014 to 6.8 million ckm by 2020, representing a CAGR of 3 per cent.

f late, India has been tagged as the ‘net exporter’ of electricity for the first time. As per Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the designated authority of government of India for cross border trade of electricity, during April to February this year, India has exported around 5,798 million units to Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar which is 213 million units more than the import of around 5,585 million units from Bhutan, India’s Power Ministry said in a statement. Export to Nepal and Bangladesh increased 2.5 and 2.8 times respectively in the last three years. Lighting home For years, a major population of rural India was deprived of electricity. According to a power ministry report, there were 18,452 un-electrified villages when the current government assumed power. Out of this 13,469 villages have been electrified as of as of 18th May. The Reality India’s sustained efforts of taking electricity to its neighbouring countries are laudable. The country has been able to achieve this feat due to heavy investment on generation infrastructure over the past few years. Also, a massive surge in the domestic supply of raw materials like coal in the past two years has also helped power companies boost output. However, ‘net exporter’ doesn’t mean India has surplus power to export after meeting its domestic requirement – it means the country’s export volume of electricity is larger than the imported ones. As per the information available in Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana website, out of 597,464 census villages, 593,479 villages as of 25th May. Again, there are many households yet to get electricity connection within the ‘electrified’ villages as a village is deemed electrified if at least 10 per cent of total households are electrified. Rajesh Nandwani, VP and Business Unit Head– Switchgear, Anchor Electricals Pvt Ltd points out, “The reality remains that even today, 35 per cent of rural India has no access to the grid electricity. While the renewable energy is expected to bring a difference here, the fact remains that the nation still faces a power-deficit and we have to aim to bridge this gap first and make the country selfreliant, prior to exporting power.” Electrical & Power Review

ndian solar power sector has seen enormous growth during the past few years. Shekhar Dutt, Director General, Solar Power Developers Association (SPDA) gives an overview of the current solar power market in India. He also talks about the probable impacts of GST on solar power projects. What is your assessment of the current solar power market in India? The national target of 100 GW solar by 2022 and further plan of taking it up to 250 GW as part of Government of India’s commitment to have 40 per cent generation from renewable energy sources by 2030 (In COP21) has made India a hub of solar market in the world. Sector has seen enormous growth by reaching 10 GW operational in last 3-4 years and approximately similar capacity is under execution to be commissioned during this year. It is an interesting fact that, most of the Indian companies took the initial risks and backed the government’s solar mission by investments made in solar sector and demonstrated the growth potential. As a result, the market is now seeing great interest from investors and utilities from various parts of the world entering to solar market in India. Post allocation of 17-18 GW projects until last year, currently the market is facing inconsistency to maintain the similar pace of allocation and if this gap continues long, it may affect the investor’s interest and ultimately

the target of 100 GW. Based on our member’s feedback, SPDA has also raised this concern with Ministry at various forums. Solar tariff has become highly competitive. Wouldn’t such low tariffs impact on solar power producers ‘profitability? With such a large participation from domestic and international players, the competitiveness has increased at its highest level. The way tariffs are falling critically as low as sub ` 3/Kwh (recent bids in Rajasthan) would have surely constrained the investor’s expectations on returns in a short run but the factors like adapting best performing technologies and scaling the capacity to multi GWs will have a balancing strength in long run for solar power producers. However, tariffs are an output of multiple assumptions and certain risks being taken by investors. It will be interesting to see how lenders perceive these trends of tariffs falling down continuously. Do you expect that the tariff can fall further? Every bid has its own dynamics and features to attract participation and discover its tariff. In the past few bids, assumptions related to imported module prices falling down even lesser than 30 cents/Wp considered to be major factor of bidders quoting lowest

However, the recent release of GST rates (drafts) have created a big concern among the industry player as the items being imported under HS code 8541(PV cells, whether or not assembled in the modules or made up into panels) have been specifically kept at 18 per cent. Solar modules are currently being imported under same HS code at nil duty. There will be a major impact on project cost if these rates are going to be final and may also affect the falling trends of tariffs in upcoming bids. The volatility in the rupee and dollar exchange rate also is a factor to be considered. Can competitive pricing be a major hurdle in achieving 100 GW solar target? There has to be an integrated focus in terms of generating regular demands from states, maintaining the consistent pipeline for investors to plan better, protecting the investments from payment risks and resolving the challenges like curtailment for solar power generation, which would be required to achieve 100 GW mission successfully. It will be a challenge to maintain the balance between low cost and better performance in terms of quality to run these plants for next 25 years. However, if the focus remains just on competitive pricing and not the overall aspects of the sustainable implementation, that may not give the optimal support to the mission in long run. ower generation, transmission and distribution are the three activities in power industry. Energy is consumed and loss is incurred in every step of these activities. Among the three activities, a loss in power distribution is the maximum as it has grown up in an unplanned manner. The parameters of aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) loss, that provides a realistic picture of energy and revenue loss situation, consist of two parts that is technical loss and commercial loss. Technical loss depends upon losses incurred from machinery (transformers), lines and improper maintenance of plant and machinery etc. However, under commercial loss, theft is one of the main causes of the high losses. Theft occurs in several ways like namely by tapping transmission lines and tampering by passing meter. Dr Sanjiv Kawishwar, Sr. Vice President, ReGen Powertech outlines the various aspects of distribution loses as: • Theft of electricity means unlawful usage of electricity by individual or industry or commercial premises. • Due to unaccounted consumption of electricity by various entities, India loses billions of rupees because it becomes unbilled consumption. • Non-payment of bills is

another type of loss incurred by the electricity supply companies and boards and it is estimated that only half the revenue is realised. • Power theft losses are also termed as commercial losses that are difficult to estimate but run into huge amounts. • It is evident that electricity theft occurs across domestic users commercial users and industrial segments in rural areas and also in large cities. • Mostly the electricity is stolen by tapping it from live wires that also poses life risks. The scope of AT&C loses in a developing country like India is very high – ranging from 11 to 71 per cent across States. However, putting corrective measures in place will help to curb it. Commercial losses contribute to maximum percentage and this can be corrected with better billing and collection efficiency. However electricity theft is an important aspect to be plugged. Commenting on advanced solutions for power theft loss detection, Anil Kadam, Senior Manager – Solution Architect (Utilities), Schneider Electric, India said, “Smart gird technologies bring in various solutions like online energy audit and big data pattern recognition to help reduce AT&C losses

due to electricity theft. Technical losses can be reduced by implementing with increased operational efficiencies using advanced distribution management systems and of course with low loss equipment.” Dr Kawishwar also highlights some of the advanced solution for power theft loss detection: • Use of smart meter is one of the most effective ways to prevent electricity theft. Smart meter is used to measure electricity remotely and can switch the power supply off for individual appliances based on demand response. It can remotely control electricity consumption to maximize energy efficiency and load balancing. • Smart Grid refers to a network of transmission lines, substations, transformers and more that deliver electricity from the power plant to consumer with improved security measures from theft and safety. • Electricity theft detection using GSM is a smart preventive means. Most common way of theft is bypassing the meter using a piece of wire, people simply bypasses the electricity meter by placing a wire before and after the meter. oor power quality can cause huge loss to the electrical devices, disrupts the operations and sometimes all these drawbacks can also result in hesitation to invest heavily on instruments. Hence to meet the power quality standards there is increasing importance of T&M instruments in power quality management. Monitoring of power quality and checking the consumptions is very crucial so as to know what is going in system, whether devices are operating on desired inputs or are getting some poor quality power damaging the devices. Decent power quality and uninterrupted power are extremely important goals at many types of set-ups, ranging from manufacturing plants, commercial and government buildings to data centres, healthcare centres. When it comes to reliability of power in a set-up, foresight is a lot better than hindsight. Poor power quality can cause damage to costly electrical equipment, reduce productivity, and – if severe enough – disrupt daily operations. Variations in power quality can result from voltage spikes, swells, and sags; harmonic disturbances; and short and long interruptions of power lasting from a few milliseconds to over two seconds as well as fast switching devices. And any of these events can occur at any time. Even it is compulsory to maintain the power factor unity as per rules. If it is not maintained unity, there will be a fine charged

It does what fixed-function devices on the market can’t do because the functionality is defined by software. This approach to grid instrumentation uses a common set of hardware with software-designed measurements and communication protocols. With this approach, the grid automation system can deliver new measurements to operators and power system engineers while integrating with existing systems.

Additionally, the software-based measurements can be upgraded in the future as standards, research, and needs evolve. Full access to the streaming waveform data is available for inline processing, online monitoring, and storage on the device. One can program the grid automation system to intelligently select which data to monitor, store, or transmit to reduce storage and bandwidth requirements. The analog input channels that are designed for potential transformer and current transformer inputs use high-speed, high-resolution converters that sample at more than 1,000 samples per cycle with 24 bits of resolution. Using a hybrid, customisable device like the grid automation system can help simplify the transition between technologies by bridging existing setup with new technology and minimising the need for excess equipment. For example, the grid automation system programmed as a remote terminal unit can collect data from slave devices communicating over one protocol and output to the SCADA/EMS system over another. This prevents upgrading more equipment than needed and allows power engineers to selectively replace systems that are legacy or outdated.

mart meters are the heart of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployed for better energy efficiency through demand side management and flattening of dangerously fluctuating peak demands, integration of renewable energy sources, better forecasting of energy demands, asset management and many such advantages aimed at achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of 24x7 ‘Powers for All’.

Agarwal observes, “At present, one of the biggest pain area of the utilities is the direct control at the consumer end and this problem can be taken care by smart meters.” Ministry of Power is also aggressively working with all the stakeholders for deployment of smart meters in entire country. Central Electricity Authority has released functional specifications for smart meters and BIS has also released relevant standards of smart meters recently.” Kulkarni also believes that IoT enabled electricity meters are well accepted in India and especially in the private sector. He says, “This (IoT enabled electricity meters) meter is well accepted in India.” Nearly all the new consumer meter tenders floated by the state electricity companies insist on IoT enabled ‘connected meters’. Since there is very little standardisation in this space, the tenders ask for different ways of connecting – using ZigBee, DLMS, 6LoWPAN, PLC and others. But overall the concept is well understood and sought after in India,” believes Kulkarni. In addition Kulkarni says, “In private sector, there is even more drive towards these meters because of direct benefit in regards to detecting problems and saving electricity costs. The main challenge is to find companies which can provide end-to-end solutions or interoperability with different types of IoT meters. But that problem is reducing with recent advances in technology.” It won’t be wrong in saying that India till now has been one of the fastest adopters of IoT technologies in India. Whether it is Zigbee or 6LowPAN or GSM/GPRS, we have installations of all the technologies in field. And this is the reason that India has a very good knowledge base of which technology performs how and in what field conditions. “Smart electricity meters have been happening now from past 10 years. However, the drive did catch up in last few years especially, but the best part is more and more POC’s are happening with newer technologies integrated inside smart meters,” observes Misra. “We already have a huge base of smart meters installed and used in field. And with power utilities, ministry of power and semiconductor solution providers like Texas Instruments the effort of refining and defining the next generation smart meters is more focused and directed,” informs Misra. The user today wants to know more and more and wants to be connected always with everything. This has actually laid the

Uncovering the invisible Why the integrity of the ground grid needs to be checked Invisible danger in older substations The integrity test for the ground grid basically consists of verifying the continuity between two different points on the grid. It ensures that the internal connections within the grid are in a good enough condition to dissipate fault currents. Such a test is particularly important in older substations where the grid has been buried for a long period of time and it is not possible to verify the connections visually. In addition, soil with low resistance is often chosen for constructing substations, which can corrode the grid’s metallic components over time. In the “IEEE Guide for Measuring Earth Resistivity, Ground Impedance, and Earth Surface Potentials of a Grounding System” (IEEE 81 standard) different methods for measuring the continuity are mentioned. A 230 kV substation was examined using the high-current test method.

Only a CPC 100, a voltmeter and a clamp ammeter are used to carry out the test.

he grounding system is an important component for the correct function of a substation. When it is not in suitable condition, there is an increased safety risk for people and control and measurement equipment may be affected as well. Different standard tests give an indication of the overall functionality of the ground grid but they cannot determine the precise internal condition of the grid itself. The commissioning and maintenance strategy for electrical substations normally includes testing that assesses the condition of the ground grid: Measurements of the soil resistivity are done during the design stage; ground grid impedance and step and touch voltages are checked regularly. However, these tests cannot reveal the condition of the grid’s connections that affect its continuity. Therefore, a ground grid integrity test should be done in order to assess it.

With the CPC 100, ground impedance, step and touch voltages and integrity tests can be carried out with one test set.

High-current test method In the first step, different reference and test points are identified in the floor plan of the substation. Then the measurements are done. A DC current (ideally 50 A minimum) is injected into the ground grid from a ground riser, it then passes through the grid itself to a reference riser. One part of the current flows to the ground grid while the other part flows above ground to grounded structures. The branch current that flows to the ground grid is measured with a DC clamp meter (Figure 1) in order to determine the resistance of the conductors that are buried between the injection points. The corresponding resistance of the buried conductors is calculated based on the measured branch current and voltage values. In order to compare the resistances of different test points to each other, the distance between the two injection points has to be taken into account. Therefore, the measured resistances are divided by the distance. A practical experience The resistances between different reference and test points were measured in the 230 kV substation. The equipment that was used during the test was a CPC 100 for delivering the 300 A DC that was required, a DC voltmeter, a DC clamp ammeter and markers for identifying the test points (Figure 2).The resistances per meter were determined for several test points in the substation as shown in Figure 3. The measurement showed no significant deviations between the relative resistances within the substation. All of the values were between 0.4 mΩ/m and 1.2 mΩ/m.

Further investigation is recommended if the test points show a significantly higher resistance value compared with other test points. The test point should be revealed in order to carry out a visual inspection. In addition to measuring the impedance of the ground grid and the step and touch voltages of the substation, it is also important to be aware of the integrity of the grid itself. An integrity test for verifying the continuity of the grid at any of its points should be a standard procedure in the maintenance strategy of a substation. Small Hydro, Big Opportunity Analysing how small hydro projects bring big business opportunities

mall Hydro Power (SHP) projects are done in small rivers streams or are enforced in the existing water infrastructure. SHP projetcs are mainly developed for generating power in the remote regions. Like solar and wind small hydro power can lead in the renewable energy segment as it has huge potential also due to its versatility in low investment prices it can turn as promising and economical energy solution for future power requirements. Apart from being one of the major source for power how SHP projects can bring big business opportunities is a thing to watch and to take the small hydro projects ahead the government also need to boost the sector. To understand how SHP projects can bring big business opportunities, this article will describe about the same. India’s SHP potential is 19,749 MW with 6,474 identified projects and Karnataka has the largest share of over 4,000 MW. Of these projects, a total of only a little over 1,100 MW are under implementation. Sharing his views on the growth of the small hydro power Neelav Samrat De, Asst. General Manager (Marketing & BD), ANDRITZ HYDRO Pvt. Ltd states, “Even though SHP comes under renewable energy and enjoys the benefits of renewable, however, we have not witnessed a considerable growth in this domain. Clearly, under the government’s ambitious renewable energy thrust, we see importance given to solar and wind and the least to SHP projects. Even though SHP is a very state related

issue, where the state utilities through their renewable department give developer licenses, we as equipment manufacturers, have not witnessed the zest from state governments to put thrust in SHP projetcs, maybe barring Himachal Pradesh, where HIMURJA, the nodal state renewable agency, has in the recent past given developer licenses for over 750 SHP projects.” Small hydro enjoys sops and tax benefits as it is under the renewable ambit. MNRE has implemented some commendable steps to encourage investors and developers to take up the SHP initiative as this caters primarily to the local population and does not get involved in issues of land acquisition, huge capital investments and other issues related to large sized hydro projects. Briefing on how SHP projects can bring big business opportunities Neelav adds, “While looking back at the opportunities, SHP projetcs are a very good proposition for developers not only from the benefits of sops and lesser risks, but also from interests during construction, lesser project completion schedules and rebates. Also with the solar wave going the promising way, SHP projects also belonging to the same category would also see a push, as we in the industry anticipate. SHP projects are looking towards a push and we could probably be looking at a good opportunity in this segment in the coming months. Specifically, also with the MOP trying to push for the hydro sector’s revival, we are hopeful for SHP too.” Electrical & Power Review


Green Zone Dr. Rajib K Mishra, Director (Mkt. & BD), PTC India Ltd believes, SHP projects are generally required to supply both a local community and industry or to contribute to the distributed generation in regional or state electricity grid. Generally the SHP projects are without dams and pre-dominantly developed on streams with good hydrology on run-of-river scheme. The option of supplying power to remote hilly areas and townships can either be through long transmission lines or through generation at the point of consumption itself. The distributed generation for remote hilly areas are best suited for SHP projects. If we see the western countries and particularly hilly countries like Norway and Sweden, SHP projects with ownership of local community are pre-dominantly supplying power in remote areas. “In India the focus in recent past is adding capacities in thermal and

This can be owned by local municipality or panchayats and can be on the franchise models as well. The participation of community and the women self-help groups for installing small hydro and supplying power to the local communities can equally be harnessed. So therefore there are many opportunities for small hydro projects that are not tapped.”

Machine intelligence from IMx-8 data will help customers to avoid unplanned downtime and schedule maintenance proactively, prolonging machine availability and minimising maintenance and repair costs. IMx-8 integrates easily with SKF Cloud for storing and sharing data, enabling SKF Remote Diagnostic Services for expert reporting and recommendations. The IMx-8 is DIN rail mounted, and can be housed in an IP65 cabinet to provide additional protection in demanding industrial environments. SKF has developed an app-based turbine maintenance support. Would you like to introduce this solution in the Indian market? The app-based turbine maintenance support is possible with our product IMx-8. What is your strategy to expand activities in India for the wind segment? India is one of the fastest growing market, and with government’s focus on “clean energy” and manufacturing, it is expected to grow with a double digit in the coming years. With our clear focus to tap the growing market and cater to the global players, we are regularly customising and launching products appropriate for the market and as per industry requirement. Solar projects: No compromise on material and workmanship quality Highlighting the common issues that have plagued several solar projects across the country over their operational history.

O

ver the past few years, Excelsior Engineering Solutions has carried out various plant audits and quality checks for several MWs of ground mount and rooftop projects spread across locations in India. The outcome of these audits unravelled certain findings that were quite universal, familiar in characteristic. Even though the projects were installed in different locations by various competing vendors for a diverse clientele with dissimilar technologies, there are several findings to be identical. In this article, we would like to focus on the common issues that have plagued several solar projects across the country over their operational history.

Solar modules • Formation of hot spots within the cells. • Snail trails on the modules. • Failure of bypass diodes in the module junction box. • Sagging of frameless thin film modules. MMS • Lack of code compliance in the design criteria of the structure. • Utilisation of smaller or lighter sections that are not in keeping with the design to reduce overall material utilisation per MW. • Absence of concrete or re-bars below the pile foundations.

• Inconsistency in the mixing of concrete used. • Inaccurate pile foundations leading to misalignment of the structure columns. • Pile caps of column post missing. • Holes drilled on the purlins at the fabrication shop being inaccurate leads to on-site drilling; workmanship of such fixes tends to be poor. • Rusting of parts due to improper galvanisation. • Sagging and buckling of structures. • Aluminium sections of inadequate load bearing capacity being used for rooftop installation. • Rusting of fasteners and the threading of the bolts being worn off. • Nut bolts mounting the module to the structure are found loose. • Necessary grade of fasteners not being used. Inverter • Central inverters not maintained properly. Layers of dust are found inside the equipment. • Inadequate equipment earthing. Civil works • Due to the use of local and unskilled workers at site, several issues arise with the civil works of control room, equipment foundations, peripheral walls etc. • Proper compacting of the ground not being carried out causes the building or equipment to tilt post the monsoon. • High speed winds damaging doors and causing street lights to fall.

Cables • Cables missing proper tagging/ ferruling making it difficult to trace the cables during fault finding. • Improper crimping of lugs at the equipment. • Cable insulation is not tested post installation to find if any damage took place done during laying of cables. This results in faults

O&M • It is a common notion by several clients that cleaning modules regularly is the sole O&M practise to be carried out. • Preventive and predictive maintenance activities of equipment’s are hardly ever undertaken. • No proper records of spare parts

consumption, fault analysis or grid shutdown are found. • Personnel’s on site are not given professional training to handle the equipment and safety procedures to be followed. The above observations are not the findings of any single project. These are common observations made by Excelsior site team. To counteract aggressive bidding by cutting corners for small savings, will always be met with a negative impact on the project. We are at the dawn of an energy revolution. The solar projects will not be able to withstand 25 years of working lifecycle if we compromise on the material and workmanship quality.

Testing high-voltage plants with thermal imagers from Testo The solution With the high-resolution thermal imager testo 890, these sources of malfunction can be quickly and precisely identified before they become serious problems endangering the reliability of supply. The wide-angle lens of the imager quickly provides a meaningful overview of the overall status of the plant being tested. In order to assess distant measurement objects precisely, the telephoto lens is recommended. It reliably and precisely measures objects with a size of 19 mm from a distance of 15 m. Anomalies, so-called hotspots, are identifiable from a size of approx. 6 mm.

s an integral part of electrical supply networks, high-voltage plants such as substations must ensure as uninterrupted a supply of electricity as possible due to the high availability of their electrical systems. A malfunction or interruption of the electrical grid is often preceded by thermal warming caused by electrical resistance. This must be localised, evaluated and if required, the time frame for a repair determined. Using the thermal imagers from Testo, thermal warming can be tested without contact and from a safe distance, without endangering the user or needing to shut down the system. The challenge Most symptoms of wear, material fatigue or cable rupture in the transmission of electrical current are preceded by thermal warming due to increased resistance. If this resistance becomes too high, the heat development destroys the component, with the possible result of a power cut. The objective of maintenance work is to obtain an overview of the switchgear which is comprehensive as well as detailed

– including all circuit breakers and power switches, converters, insulators, screw fittings, cables or other connections. A further challenge lies in the cooling oil of the transformers. Due to eroded insulation, slurry can occur here, which is deposited in the cooling ribs. The blockage of the throughflow in the affected cooling ribs initially compromises the cooling, and in the worst case can result in the failure of the complete cooling function of the transformer.

This allows the smallest cable ruptures or warming in circuit breakers, for example, to be evaluated from a safe distance. The large fold-out, rotatable display of the testo 890 allows overhead imaging work, and in combination with the rotating, ergonomic grip, the imager can be confidently handled even in difficultto-access places. Insulation resistance testing in high induction environment I

nsulation condition is the key factor of operational safety and correct operation of electrical devices and systems, and in addition, it is a protection against direct contact. Systematic examination of insulation condition is necessary in order to detect any deterioration of insulation and is a permanent element of inspection and measurement works. In the case of measurements of industrial equipment, the tendency of resistance value changes is of key importance, because it can indicate gradual deterioration of insulation condition. Basic elements influencing deterioration of insulation are: electrical and mechanical exposures, chemical aggression, thermal exposures and environmental pollution; as a result of their influence during normal operation of electrical equipment, its insulation is subjected to ageing. Insulation resistance measurements are performed with direct current in order to eliminate the influence of capacitance. The method for performing insulation resistance measurements and the required measurement voltages are defined in the standards: HD 60364-6, E-04700, EN 61557-2. After applying

measurement voltage, physical phenomena occur in insulation, causing the flow of current. During resistance measurement, the following components of the current flowing through insulation (1) can be distinguished: The capacitance charging current (2) - depending on the capacitance (e.g. the length of measured cable), the absorption current (3) - resulting from charge and dipole movement in the electric field, the insulation leakage current (4) - the sum of currents flowing through and on the surface of the material. Due to the nature of current flowing through insulation, the measured value is influenced by the time of measurement, as well as humidity, temperature, measurement voltage and Cleanness of the insulation material surface. The three-lead method, used in all advanced instruments, allows for eliminating the influence of the surface leakage current. In the case of cables, the core insulation must be wrapped in a metal foil connected to the shield terminal of the instrument - only the leakage current flowing through insulation is measured. International Copper Association India (ICA India) in association with Central Electricity Authority (CEA) as a part of its seminars and workshops on Electrical Safety across India, conducted 3rd National workshop on ‘Electrical Safety’ in Delhi. The workshop aimed to outline the regulations to ensure that electrical installation safety standards are followed properly. Electric defaults have been seen as the largest single reason for cause of building fires. The government of India has accorded high importance to this area.

Unfortunately poor practices, improper and weak installations, undersized and inferior quality of wires in the buildings have resulted in an increasing number of electrical accidents. The objective of this workshop is to create awareness about electrical safety amongst stakeholders and sensitise them on how to mitigate risks in such situations. ICA India and CEA along with the panel of experts organised this workshop with the aim of increasing the industry professionals’ awareness of various safety measures and precautions while installing, handling, repairing or working on electrical installations and urging them to follow the revised standards. he latest generation of chainflex data cables with a new alloy conductor and a halogen-free TPE outer jacket is ideally suited for the smallest bend radii down to 4xd with cycle numbers of over 40 million strokes. The new highperformance conductor alloy from igus is the solution for highly dynamic, fast applications with small radii from 15 millimetres. The new chainflex series CF298 and CF299 are a unique cable series for extremely heavy duty at the

smallest radii, and can be delivered from stock.

For confined spaces, igus has now introduced the new data cable series in the product range. The CF298 (unshielded) and the CF299 (shielded) have been tested intensively in the largest test lab in the industry with a floor space of 2,750 square metres, and have qualified for small bend radii down to 4xd in continuous motion. This enables igus to offer on the market the smallest bending factor for moving data cables in e-chains. This is made possible mainly by the combination of the new high-performance alloy conductor material and the highly flexible igus TPE outer jacket, which prevents cracks and breaks. The jacket material additionally offers the highest possible abrasion

They are also suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications due to their resistance to UV, low temperature and oil.
