Our exclusive cover report is an epilogue on the status of the metal cutting and machine tool industry in India. ExxonMobil participates as a technical partner at CII ExxonMobil Lubricants Private Limited participated as a technical partner at Confederation of Indian Industry’s(CII) third edition of workshops with industry associations and technical discussions with accredited energy auditors across multi-cities. The initiative reinforces ExxonMobil and CII’s commitment to create awareness on the significance of Energy Efficiency in industrial lubrication across industry verticals. On the sidelines of the workshops and technical discussions, CII launched the updated version of the report on ‘Enhanced Energy Efficiency in Industrial Lubrication’ incorporating the feedback received from the multicity workshops conducted in 2015. This year’s edition of the report lays emphasis on the technical know-how of energy efficient lubricants and their corresponding benefits by centring on the four parameters to demonstrate Energy Efficiency through real time case studies. ExxonMobil contributed their field case studies to support this: • Reduction in electrical energy consumption • Reduction in lube oil consumption • Variation in operating temperature • Productivity improvement

Alicat Scientific introduces customised Electronic Pressure Controllers package. Alicat offers a choice of valves, valve orifices and process connections to fit customer specifications. EPC instruments are ideal for use in OEM gas chromatographs, fluidics dispensing for flow cytometry, and anywhere responsive pressure control is needed.

Alicat Scientific has added two new families of electronic pressure controllers specifically for high volume OEMs. The EPC family with single proportional valves, and EPCD family with dual valves, provide customised pressure control in embedded systems. The small footprint instruments respond quickly to upstream fluctuations to provide fast, accurate control of pressure in an economical, easy-to-integrate

EPC and EPCD instruments have a 100 ms control response to still upstream pressure fluctuations in real time. NISTtraceable accuracy is 0.25 per cent full-scale. The EPC family’s single proportional valve provides stable control of pressure in flowing applications, such as maintaining flow of carrier gas through the sample injection point in gas chromatographs. The EPCD features a second exhaust valve to provide efficient control of pressure in closed volumes, such as controlling the head space above a fluid for dispensing. Alicat offers NPT, SAE, downport, and NeSSi process connections. Both digital (RS-232, RS-485, Modbus) and analog (0-5v, 0-10v, 4-20mA) communications are available to suit a range of end-user products. A choice in valve type and orifice allows for configuration to specific flow requirements for the best speed and stability.

Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT), the global research, development and engineering arm of Volvo, and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU). With this MoU, Volvo group and IISc will undertake research and development in future automotive technologies. The MoU was signed by Jan-Ove Östensen, VP Advanced Technology and Research, Volvo Group, and K. PaneerSelvam, In-charge Registrar, IISc.

Market outlook Technavio’s market research analyst has predicted a growth in the production of machine tools in India between the years 2016-2020. The industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13 per cent during the forecast period. It is observed that the increase in the automotive industry has been the driver for this market. India has been a hub for major automobile manufacturers of the likes of Ford, Isuzu, Suzuki, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Fiat.

Machine tool industry growing at a healthy rate Brett Allard, Director of Sales & Marketing, Renishaw Metrology Systems Ltd says that the machine tool industry in India has been growing at a healthy rate for over a decade. He says, “The Indian engineering sector, and especially the automotive sector witnessed increased investments as a number of major global players started to outsource production to India. This along with consistent growth in demand for major domestic auto players has led to a greater demand for machine tools. Last year, India was the world’s 10th largest consumer and 13th largest producer of machine tools. The machine tool industry in India continues to grow strongly and is now developing a position to export a range of general purpose standard machine tools to even industrially advanced economies.”

In the recent years, the need to adopt CNC based machine tools to bring in precision and improvise the accuracy has increased. It is no more a hidden fact that non CNC machines utilise more time and energy. In addition to this, the non CNC machines have a tendency to wear and tear in a short period. The increasing demand for CNC machines will aid the further growth of the machine tools market in India. Competitive landscape The Indian machine tools market is a combination of numerous small, medium and large suppliers that consist of international and regional players. The highly intensified competition amongst the vendors has resulted in increased investment in R&D and implementation of high technology solutions in machine tools. Allard is confident that with the industrial growth and capital investment by the government through its renewed policies, the machine tool industry is likely to witness further large growth. He further adds, “Automotive and associated component industries, capital goods industries constitute the major market for machine tools in India presently. Aerospace, defence and consumer durables are other industry segments, where the demand for machine tools has grown in last few years. Currently, all these industries are growing and therefore this trend is expected to remain. Aerospace, dental, medical and electronics are likely to fuel growth in years to come.” Machine tool industry to grow by 15 per cent Shrinivas Shirgurkar, Managing Director, Ace Designers Limited while commenting on the current status of the metal cutting industry says, “Machine tool industry is the mother industry of manufacturing economies. Machine tools belong to the capital goods category of machinery and are of two types, metal cutting and metal forming.” Stating his views on the growth of the industry, Shirgurkar says, “In the current financial year, the industry is expected to grow by 15 per cent after stagnation of nearly 4 years. The best year for the industry so far has been 2011-12. This year promises to be better than the best.” Growth in implementation and productivity Commenting on the current status of the metal cutting industry, Nitin Wakode, Associate Vice President PSG, Onward Technologies Ltd says, “Since last couple of years Indian

metal cutting industry has seen substantial improvement in terms of implementation of latest technology and productivity. The large, medium scale industries including the government and the PSU units are continuously investing in most complex CNC machines, cutting tools and CAD/CAM softwares. We at Onward technologies are continuously engage with metal cutting industry to set new trends using latest technology.” Wakode further adds, “This sector is doing extremely good business due to large infrastructure projects , metro projects and Make in India initiatives. Small and micro level industry though trying to face global challenges is doing so-so.” An industry for SMEs and OEMs Beng Chieh Quah, Head Of Marketing – Asia Pacific, Faro says, “Metal cutting industry falls under the machine working and fabrications industry, a strategic and important industry segment in India, after automotive. Like most industries in India, the metal cutting industry is divided into two sectors – the small and unorganised which is responsible for the manufacturing of components for SMEs and the big and organised which serves the larger OEMs and fabrication house.” An industry worth ` 8,200 crore In response to a question on the current status of the metal cutting industry in India, V. Anbu, Secretary and Director General, IMTMA says, “India is the 13th largest manufacturer of machine tools in the world. The Indian machine tool industry consists of around 1,000 manufacturing units covering large, medium and small companies.” He further says, “The current market size of Indian metal cutting machine tool industry stands at around ` 8,200 crore, of which production in metal cutting machine tools is around ` 4,200 crore (around ` 3,760 crore for CNC and ` 460 crore for Non-CNC). The domestic production accounts for over 45 per cent of the total consumption. The consumption is primarily driven by automobile sector. Die and mould and industrial machinery are other key sector users in this industry. High value machines are imported.” As per Market Research Report on the Indian metal cutting machine tool Industry there are 3 major clusters of countries from which India imports machines. Need to upgrade the machining process Speaking about the current status of the metal cutting industry in India, Lalit Sharma, Managing Director, Rigibore India Pvt Ltd says, “The metal cutting industry in India has come a long way in the last decade with many large manufacturers across various sectors making India a preferred destination for machining precision components. While the industry continues to grow and attract investments into new set ups, most manufacturers continue to use traditional machines and tooling systems.” However, he feels that it is high time we need to incorporate new techniques. He says, “There is a need to urgently upgrade the machining processes by incorporating smart technologies and automation to compete globally with other manufacturers on scale and precision,” in support of his views. A win-win scenario for the industry Commenting on the current status of the metal cutting industry, Maulik Patel, Executive Director, Sahajanand Laser Technology Ltd says, “India has been gradually advancing in steel sector since last couple of years since steel is amongst highly utilised metal, the increase of its demand will bring huge benefit for metal forming industry. Amidst the favourable conditions started making way for metal forming tool industry, Indian government gave the progress much needed momentum by ‘Make in India’ initiative. What the campaign has been essentially doing is distributing the progress in more balancing way. Prior to the aforementioned program, the metal shaping sector was facing the inharmonious growth and the gap amongst the high performing sections and low performing sections were tremendously high.” Patel further adds, “The focus of ‘Make in India’ campaign is going to be the proliferation of small to medium size industries and that involves substantial amount of segments and sub segments of the metal forming industry. It reflects that, the drive is all set to revolutionize the face of all the Indian industry as, the government has determined to

Rajesh Kushwaha, Managing Director, Multi Axis CNC speaks about the current status of the metal cutting industry in India, the technologies to watch for in the new year and also how the recent demonetisation has had an impact on the industry. Excerpts: Need to strengthen knowledge base When asked about the current status of the metal cutting industry, Rajesh Kushwaha, Managing Director, Multi Axis CNC comments, “Manufacturing sector is dependent on the investment climate. The structural reforms since 1990s have made some progress. Despite recent setbacks, it is universally acknowledged that the reforms process in India cannot be reversed and sooner or later these reforms will be implemented. However, the long term competitive ability of Indian firms would depend on production efficiency. Production efficiency, in turn, is dependent on ability to develop, import and adapt new technologies among other factors.” He further adds, “India has made significant progress in various spheres of science and technology over the years and can now take pride in having a strong network of S&T institutions, trained manpower and an innovative knowledge base. Given the rapid pace of globalisation, fast-depleting material resources, increasing competition among nations and the growing need to protect intellectual property, strengthening the knowledge base is an important issue. Being a machine manufacturer is good for us to get 100 per cent advance payment before delivering the machines. Otherwise some customers who are able to pay in advance pay the balance in installments.” Showcasing robotic strength Kushwaha also spoke about how the company will make the most of IMTEX 2017. He said, “IMTEX is big platform to showcase machine tools in Asia sub continent and stand equal to TIMTOS-Taiwan machine tool exhibition. We are participating in association with Delta Electronics and will be showcasing articulated Delta Robot for job loading and unloading live demonstration.”

- contents and discontents The decision On 8th November 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an unscheduled live television address declared that the use of ` 500 and ` 1,000 notes would be invalid from the midnight, the same day. However, the legal tender of the bank denominations of ` 5, 10, 20 and 100 would not be affected. As per the government claims, demonetisation was an effort to stop counterfeiting of the current banknotes allegedly used for funding terrorism, as well as a crack down on black money in the country. The initial days that followed the announcement saw a severe cash shortage throughout the banks and ATMs across the country. As a result of this decision, the BSE SENSEX and NIFTY 50 stock indices crashed for the next two days.

Adverse effect on the sales According to Shrinivas Shirgurkar, Managing Director, Ace Designers Limited, the decision has had an impact on the sales. He says, “The recent Demonetisation has definitely impacted sales. While the orders inflow continues to be good, machine dispatches have slowed down to some extent, particularly for the SME sectors.” Shirgurkar further points out, “The banks are unable to sanction loans in a timely manner as they are completely occupied handling the demonetisation effects. We hope this will be a short term challenge and will improve in the coming months.”

Demonetisation to have a positive impact According to Brett Allard, Director of Sales & Marketing, Renishaw Metrology System Ltd, demonetisation will have a positive impact on the Indian economy. He says, “Demonetisation is a very bold but commendable step taken by Prime Minister Modi that will have a massive positive impact on Indian economy. Liquidity crunch could have an impact in the short term.” Allard further says, “In the near term, there could be pressure on GDP growth and thereby government revenues, however in

Ltd, demonetisation will have a mixed impact on the industry. He says, “I believe, the pockets of industry where an informal economy is still dominant will be affected the most. However, the organised sector is likely to stay largely unaffected. From a business point of view, I think, demonetisation will provide the push for unorganised sector to adopt better business practices and thus pivot greater professionalism in the metal cutting ecosystem as a whole.” Wait and watch policy by Rigibore India Speaking about the impact of demonetisation on the metal cutting industry, Lalit Sharma, Managing Director, Rigibore India Pvt Ltd says, “At the moment the industry is in a wait and watch mode. The consumer spending has seen a slowdown but in the long run, we feel demonetisation should not have much the impact on the industry.” He further adds, “ In fact, the demonetisation drive and the cash mobilization in the banks should moderate the interest rates by a fair bit going forward. This will help re-energise spending and investments.” Optimistic approach by Shahajanand Laser Technology Expressing his opinion on the recent demonetisation, Maulik Patel,Executive Director, Sahajanand Laser 38

Temporary impact on the industry In response to the question on the effects of demonetisation on the metal cutting industry, Takahide Yoneda, GM, CNC Systems, Factory Automation and Industrial Division, Mitsubishi Electric India Pvt. Ltd said, “The demonetisation would temporarily impact the metal cutting machine manufacturing industry because of the weak investments especially by small and medium scale sectors due to the unavailability of loans and slow down in banking transactions. Anticipating a high demand again in the last quarter of this FY, the OEMs would continue the machine production by added efforts.” Tier 3 and small companies feel the heat According to Keshav Khurana, Executive Director, Wohlhaupter India Pvt. Ltd, the demonetisation has had not much of an effect on Wohlhaupter. He says, “It has had an impact normally on Tier 3 and few companies which run on cash and have contract labour etc. We have ourselves seen their work coming to a standstill. Even few investors are becoming cautious due to this uncertain situation.” Minimal impact on the pumps and valves industry According to Shankar Rajaram, Vice President – Sales (Industry), Grundfos India, planning will come to the rescue of the industry. “As the industry sector is largely structured and pump forms a part of CapEx planning,the demonetization impact will be minimal,” he says. Deep impact on the secondary sale Swapan Mitra , Business Head, Industry Sector, Kirloskar Brothers Limited states that the sale of small pumps for domestic and agriculture applications, normally purchased over the counter, has been affected due to demonetisation. He says, “As most of the transactions are of smaller value and are made in cash, the sale has been affected. Thus, liquidity issues have had a deep impact on secondary sale of dealer stock business.” He further adds, “However, the industrial pump business is not affected with this new policy as the products are higher valued. Importance of barrier fluid pressure in double seal operation This article gives you an idea about the difference between buffer plan (unpressurised) and Barrier Plan (pressurised). It explains how barrier fluid pressure helps to support double (dual) mechanical seals in a pressurised plan and increases MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of seal.

The use of dual mechanical seals in industries has increased due to its protection against accidents caused by premature seal failures, sealing critical applications and more importantly environmental norms. In order to run dual seals, a suitable API Plan/Seal support system is a must. Study shows that several double seal failures were majorly due to improper operation of API Plans. Hence it is most important to know about API Plans and its operation to run the seals successfully. Barrier fluid pressure is one of the major parameters that need to be looked in when using a pressurised plan. According to API (American Petroleum Institute) 682 Standard, API Plans for dual seals are segregated majorly into two varieties. Unpressurised fluid circulation (API Plan 52, 72) and pressurised fluid circulation (API Plans 53 A/B/C, 54 and 74). The terms ‘Buffer fluid’ and ‘Barrier fluid’ are used to describe lubricating medium. Buffer fluid implies when the lubricating medium is unpressurised or pressurised below the pump seal chamber pressure. The term “Barrier fluid” implies when the lubricating medium is pressurised above the pump seal chamber pressure. Gases are also used as buffer or barrier fluids depending on the design of the mechanical seals. This article mainly focuses on liquid barrier fluids.

This concept helps in the use of pressurised plan in several critical applications such as: • Where no leakage of process fluid to atmosphere can be tolerated e.g. hazardous, toxic, inflammable liquid. Due to high pressure of barrier fluid, it will not allow process liquid to come between inboard seal faces or atmosphere. • Where process liquid is unsuitable as a lubricant for inboard seal faces. Process fluids like slurries, abrasive liquids, dirty liquids or polymerising liquids are not suitable for face lubrication. As they don’t have lubricating property, if it enters between the seal faces, it will damage the faces and cause premature seal failure. Hence sealing these types of applications is highly critical and it can be only sealed by avoiding process fluid coming in between the seal faces. This is achieved by maintaining barrier fluid at a pressure higher than the stuffing box.

From the name itself the major difference between pressurised and unpressurised fluid circulation plans i.e. Pressure of the lubricating media can be identified. A barrier fluid is used in pressurised dual seals to isolate the pump processed liquid from the environment. As Barrier fluid pressure is above stuffing box pressure and pressure flows from high region to low region, Barrier fluid will penetrate in between the seal faces and then into the process. Fig. 1 shows barrier fluid circulation when operated at a pressure higher than stuffing box.

Hence barrier fluid pressure is very important. Barrier fluid pressure can be controlled and monitored by pressure instruments like switches or transmitters. Now the question is how much barrier fluid should be maintained? It is recommended that Barrier Fluid Pressure should be a minimum of 1.5 barg to 2 barg above the stuffing box pressure. For API Plan 53B, the value is higher and in general it is kept at 4 barg above the stuffing box pressure. It is calculated based on leakage rate of both pairs of seal faces and barrier fluid refilling frequency. Selection of the correct sealing system requires the proper choice of a suitable barrier or buffer medium. The question of which barrier or buffer medium is the right one is therefore very important. The fact is that unsuitable barrier or buffer media may significantly reduce the life of seals and have a negative effect on the process. There are two major types in barrier fluids available, namely aqueous and non-aqueous. Following criterias are important in selecting a suitable barrier/buffer medium: • Good lubrication properties • Good specific heat capacity • No tendency to deposit • Suitable viscosity • High resistance to wetted materials • High ageing resistance • Free of solids • Suitability with the process media • Non hazardous substance • High ignition temperature and high flash point • Sufficient gap between the boiling point and the process temperature • No tendency to foam • Easy availability • Each and every parameter above has its siginficance while selecting barrier or buffer fluid medium. Following are some of the barrier or buffer fluids generally used in industries: Clean water, glycol water mixture, glycerine, mineral oils, synthetic oils, silicone oils, ethanol, methanol, heat transfer fluids, nitrogen and air. Conclusion It is important to monitor and maintain Barrier fluid pressure while operating dual seals with pressurised plans.

Envisioning the future of manufacturing

Today globally distributed manufacturing becomes feasible with products that have been engineered to embrace modularisation and geographical compatibility for product development.

From an outsider’s point of view, the differences between a global manufacturing network and a local production network may seem slightly similar. However, there are crucial strategic differences that put a global manufacturing network’s ability to serve a worldwide market much ahead of a local one. This is particularly true due to a globally distributed manufacturing strategy’s ability to exploit niche advantages available in different geographies. The potential advantages of global production are manifold, viz., cost savings, access to talent, access to local markets, easier adaptation to different market demands, global branding and acquisition of competitive know-how etc. The effectiveness of “going global” depends very much on product complexity, and the maturity of production process. Overseas manufacturing is increasingly being seen as an attractive option by manufacturing businesses based on differential advantages in labour cost, overhead cost, ease of establishment, proximity to resources and grants available in new locations. Interplay between these factors can lead to the emergence of one country location being better or worse than another. There is no single formula for manufacturers to consider locations because requirements and priorities differ by industry, product type, cultural alignment, standards of business ethics etc. Horizontal and vertical integration in manufacturing Vertical or horizontal integration is at the heart of a company’s operations strategy. This decision is also fundamental to the broader business strategy, and the right answer depends on the company, its unique value proposition and its capabilities and resources to deliver small portions or the majority of that value proposition. 44

International diversification is an example of horizontal integration strategy. In the late 1980’s, management thinking around horizontal integration began to emerge as a popular trend. Manufacturers were beginning to question why they were not taking advantage of the much lower costs of manual labour in other parts of the world. Thus, a horizontal approach began to take hold, but it was an approach with some interesting implications; it allowed the company to leverage the success of overseas partners, to foster collaboration, to manage flexibility versus capacity and to lower capital investments. It benefited the manufacturer to expand on to another production stage rather than merging or acquiring businesses within the existing one. Scope of international manufacturing in a digitised era In an era of hyper-digitisation and hyper-connectivity, seamless shop floor to top-floor integration enhanced by the ubiquitous connectivity improvements of networking technologies, and a drop in the unit prices of RFID and other sensor technologies that collect and connect manufacturing data across the supply chain, it can be argued that no manufacturing location can be considered to be a stand-alone site. Networked production is no longer a theory; products have been modularised, manufacturing has been templatised, and a common digital platform pervades across all facets of manufacturing. Advanced analytics now collects data in real-time to perform predictive analysis with a continuous feedback loop with the strategy & decision making process. Application of IoT technologies promises to bring in the fourth industrial revolution (Industrie 4.0). IoT operates as a network of sensors, connectors and transmitters- which January 2017 n OEM Update


Expert column once connected to the world-wide-web, makes distance irrelevant. The factory can be remotely monitored, diagnosed and supported. Thus application of IoT makes a step up in factory management. IoT is not just about distributed sensing, it is about distributed actions- most of the times, actions taken from a remote location. It can therefore be concluded that “globally distributed” is still the future of manufacturing. This concept will assume even more importance in the future as all the advances in technology hitherto, and those that are still forming, come together to provide the right conditions for remote, isolated locations to become part of the mainstream, thanks to IoT. Similarly the promise of consumer facing IoT- we are looking at a future where any product can become connected with any customer at any time. In the grandest scheme of things, a consumer’s action can impact manufacturing real time. The way forward in globally distributed manufacturing “The future is already here, it’s just not very evenly distributed.” The words of futurist William Gibson fit very well in the context of manufacturing systems. Manufacturers need to refresh their understanding of the potential for global manufacturing and carefully design global production networks, built with the essential infrastructure in order to convert digital waste into digital opportunities. As manufacturers brace themselves for the inevitable skill gaps globally and try to work out the optimum way

to serve new kinds of customers by harnessing newer tools and technologies, they will be challenged by standardisation and control at a level that is a far cry from the current scenario where many plants continue to operate in a silo. Connected enterprise Information Technologies (IT), many of which are already operational, will connect one plant with another, and the enterprise at large. Going forward, the consumption model for these technologies will likely shift to a pay-per-use pattern, and the organisational data may well migrate to a virtual data centre operated by a non-traditional IT services providers. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will enable autonomy and reduce the need for manual operation, making it possible for factories to operate 24 hours, anywhere in the world. Manufacturing cost reduction would still be possible irrespective of production location, enabling further flexibility to manufacturers globally, with Best-CostCountry (BCC) manufacturing locations presenting competitive options due to their inherent cost advantages factor. However, the Chinese walls standing between MIG/MAG different manufacturing locations need to come down for a seamless global networked production to take off.

When IIoT Meets Reality

Key considerations for implementing IIoT strategies

There

have been numerous articles written about the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the benefits it can offer industrial organisations such as manufacturers and resource production facilities. Very little, however, has been written about the implementation realities of effectively assembling assorted IIoT technologies and addressing various decision points throughout the process. True IIoT benefits come not from step changes like upgrading equipment to be more efficient, but instead from driving continuous process efficiency by developing a constant feedback loop for data collection and assessment, used to inform IIoT strategy. While there is no one-size fits all approach, this article addresses common questions to help organisations build an effective IIoT framework. Fortunately, industrial automation and networking solutions that help organisations leverage the IIoT already exist. For instance, protocol conversion capabilities allow a wide range of different machines in heterogeneous environments to talk to each other. Industrial Ethernet switches and cellular M2M RTUs or routers enable the reliable flow of data anytime, anywhere. With these IIoT-ready products, data can be easily monitored by operators and engineers to provide a solid foundation for IIoT deployment. By combining the right equipment and systems with technically-savvy people, organisations can then turn IIoT hype into reality and use real-time data visibility to drive business advantage. What is the goal? Many elements of the IIoT can be viewed as an operational toolbox for organisations looking to gain key business

insight, regarding when and where portions of their infrastructure can benefit. Several of the tools available to guide this process tie back to common technologies that include protocol conversion, visual management, remote monitoring and industrial Ethernet. The use of these technologies enables organisations to cost-effectively extend equipment lifetime and improve process visibility while pushing control to the edge. But the question for many is where to start? The first step for effective implementation is goal definition. What is the main reason for deployment? Is the organisation looking to reduce costs and/or improve efficiency? Perhaps is it simply to remotely monitor systems and processes from anywhere at anytime? Once implementation goals are defined, the building blocks can be addressed, starting with existing equipment and where the data originates. What do I already have? After establishing goals, it is important to take inventory of the devices and equipment within the organisation. How old are they? In most cases it is unrealistic and cost-prohibitive to “ripand-replace� legacy equipment. Businesses are likely better off leveraging existing equipment by integrating industrially-fluent communication devices and protocol conversion software to tie all systems together. How to connect? The best data for IIoT investigation sometimes comes from the most challenging places in a facility. To access and assess this information, machines and sensors from all different pedigrees must connect to collect data for an organisation to be able to gain insight. While connecting equipment may sound like a mundane task, consider the fact that legacy operating equipment may have been deployed 50 years ago. How can data be extracted from older equipment without communication capabilities? Perhaps integrating sensors into the equipment or throughout a process can address data collection requirements. is likely a straightforward process if the deployed equipment was designed with communication capabilities. However, a hiccup in this process may arise upon examination of the protocols being used. Are they proprietary protocols, or industry standard? A simple solution is to leverage protocol converters to communicate with IP-friendly protocols. For legacy equipment with limited or no communication capabilities, an organisation should consider strategically overlaying a network of sensors to collect data. How to send data? Once equipment is physically connected and communicating locally, how can data be pushed outside an organisation to the “cloud�? Automation and typical layer 2 networking equipment was never designed to send data beyond the local area network. PLCs, RTUS and HMIs are commonly connected via Ethernet for local communication, but that doesn’t equate to communicating to a remote data repository in the cloud. One approach is to deploy gateways to aggregate data and negotiate with remote sites. These networking gateways, which were traditionally called routers, are being re-labelled as IIoT gateways. This IIoT aggregation gatewaybased architecture minimises implementation time by reducing the amount of configuration required to get an entire system communicating with the cloud. A common challenge at this stage, if required, is how to transmit data to the cloud without an available Internet connection, or where the Ethernet is maintained by IT and cannot be used. An easy-to-deploy solution might be to install a separate Internet connection, like a cellular router. A cellular router can be deployed in-parallel with control networks, and provides a highly secure communication channel directly to cloud portal providers. Where does the data go? The real power of the IIoT and cloud computing comes from centralising data and then integrating applications to digest and process this information. Today numerous IoT platform providers exist. These platforms offer repositories with varying capabilities, from data storage and event processing to device provisioning and reporting. While they often can be configured for unique applications, some are purpose built for easier and quicker implementations. Regardless of application-specific features, there are a number of platform components that should be taken into consideration. For example, how is security handled from data encryption to device authentication, thirdparty application connections to user access? What communication protocols are supported by the cloud platform? Most commonly MQTT, HTTP and AMQP are the primary protocols for transmitting device-level data to a server. Each has its strength, but MQTT seems to be the predominate protocol due to its ability to handle high-latency networks using a publish or subscribe architecture. How to ensure security? Privacy and security are often cited as significant barriers to IIoT investment. Sensitive data must be protected when it is collected and transferred. Special security measures may need to be in place for the systems that collect, monitor, 48

process and store IIoT data securely. But, security is a doubleedged sword, and finding a balance between implementation costs related to time and resources combined with data protection can be challenging. Regardless, security must be a key consideration for all IIoT deployments because it impacts all layers from actual sensors to the platform itself. When determining how to ensure security, many questions need to be addressed. For instance, how many locations are connecting to the cloud? Does the implementation require unidirectional or bidirectional communication? What protocols are being used to transmit data between sites and the cloud? Does the solution support end-to-end encryption? What is the cost? When evaluating IIoT solutions, reoccurring costs associated with each component need to be considered. The most common IIoT solutions will typically be a combination of capital expenditures and reoccurring charges. Platform costs are typically billed based on a data received or sent model with additional costs for data storage and add-on features such as control or notification capabilities. Reoccurring services may also come into play if satellite or cellular equipment is deployed for connected equipment. Similar to IIoT platforms, data backhaul solutions also require capital expenditures for hardware and on-going operational costs for the data plans. Conclusion If the IIoT is still difficult to rationalise, consider the resources and time it would take for a business with thousands of employees continuously running around collecting data on clipboards from legacy equipment and manually feeding information into a data analysis tool. When thinking about how much sensor or process-level data to collect, consider the best output will only come from data that is both strategically and securely gathered. Simply collecting easy-to-access surface data will likely not provide the stepchange required for ultimate success. This is why organisations need easy-to-deploy IIoT-ready solutions and tools that can seamlessly automate data collection and mining from systems and processes to minimise inefficiencies. By more effectively gathering information, businesses are able to better analyse data to gain more insight into operations. This increased visibility helps drive productivity by highlighting improvement opportunities. In closing, regardless of the goal associated with IIoT implementation, it is important to build a feedback loop for all actionable data. A cyclical process should be established and re-visited periodically to ensure process improvements and cost reductions are continuous. But we also need to consider the fact that we Indian are better innovators and entrepreneur as compared to our Asian peers. Modular connectors: The backbone of smart factory

New features transform the classic industry connector into an Industrie 4.0 component.

I

ndustrie 4.0 and the associated dramatic changes driven by Smart Factories –which are resulting in the modularization of machines and plants – are seeing the connector undergo a fundamental transformation. Whereas decentralisation was a structural change in deployment, and installation technology driven by the manufacturer of machinery and plants, modularisation is a user-initiated change brought about by flexibility. Modularisation has implications beyond the traditional responsibilities of employees. It first and foremost impacts the plant operator interested in configuring the plant in the simplest way possible. The task here no longer lies with the automation expert or the maintenance engineer – rather, it is the operator who wants to use the simple via Plug-and-Produce system. This has a fundamental impact on the connector since it becomes an integral part of a smart infrastructure. Development phases of the industrial connector 1950-1980: Centralisation The introduction of electric drives in machinery made it necessary to supply them with power as well as control them. These control and power supply functions were combined in a central switch cabinet which was then later used for the PLC. The industrial connector makes it possible to separate the switch cabinet and the mechanical areas of the machine. This represents significant customer benefits including rapid installation and reduced errors compared to hard wiring. 1980-2010: Decentralisation As a result of the fieldbus introduction, it was no longer necessary to connect directly all signals to the switch cabinet. Sensor data could now be decentrally collected, and actuators could also be switched on. This resulted

in a decentralized configuration technology which was characterised by IP67 devices on one side, but also by decentralised, smaller switch cabinets on the other. The Han- Modular which was invented to transfer data, power and individual signals to these distributed switch cabinets, can do so in a pluggable manner. The real benefit of decentralisation was the simplification of installation, consequently prolonging the machine lifecycle. 2010-2030?: Modularisation Future Smart Factories will be much more transformationcapable than today’s factories. “Mass customisation” will demand the production of individual products using mass production standards and efficiency. This goal can only be achieved if production can be continuously adapted to individual requirements as fast as possible. A modular with standardised interfaces is consequently a requirement. Here, a module must be supplied with all lifelines – the Han Modular fulfils this demand. However, enhanced requirements arise when a connector is no longer part of the installation but becomes the standardised infrastructure interface. In a Smart Factory there is no traditional commissioning that ends with a standard system configuration. In principle, a Smart Factory is continuously commissioned over and over again in operation, or a reconfiguration takes place, even during operation. All the associated possible configurations cannot be tested in traditional commissioning. This has ramifications. The new configuration must be able to be produced easily and securely. Here, it cannot be assumed that specially trained personnel will be available for this purpose. Consequently, the new configuration must be supported by integrated management. Since the addition and replacement of a module always implies the insertion of a connector, connectors gain a new central meaning. The HanModular connector is endowed with features for docking or undocking, functionality for high-uptime operation, active locking, visualisation and communication, which further develop the connector from a passive installation component into a smart infrastructure component. Many Machine Builders find it helpful to bring in an

Machine Builders can work with their automation provider to assess their current controls architecture and determine if it can provide the data logging, analytics and reporting capabilities needed to support a smart machine vision. This can help identify where to expand capabilities or engage external collaborators with expertise in areas, such as wireless and mobility, information and visualisation, and industrial security. Of course, it’s one thing to make lists – it’s another to make things happen. Designing, supporting and sustaining smart machines and equipment will require new knowledge and skillsets. Industrial networking training and certification courses can help workers get up to speed. However, Machine Builders don’t have to do everything on their own. They can work with third-party business allies to supplement in-house resources with consultative, design, integration and support services. Experienced collaborators can help determine the best technology to leverage, and offer network and security services like security assessments and reference architectures to help design more secure control systems. In addition, the right collaborator can fill specific needs like safety services for compliance with current and emerging standards, or virtual support engineers who can analyse trends and recommend actions to help prevent downtime. Machine Builders also should look to collaborate with existing industry alliances that offer additional technological, competitive and strategic advantages. Hedging for foreign currency risk

Decoding the foreign currency risk and hedging techniques.

Risk is inherent in every trade you take, but as long as you can measure risk, you can manage it. Currency risk is emerging as most crucial risk for all Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and their Tier-1 and 2 vendors in recent days. The movement between JPY and INR noticed almost around 15-20 per cent. This motivates us to share you about foreign currency risk and hedging techniques. In 1971, the Bretton Woods system of administering fixed foreign exchange rate was abolished in favour of market determination of foreign exchange rate. Economic globalisation has provided worldwide market to most of companies who are operating internationally and performing global activities. Numerous companies increasingly engage in global activities which can be categorized as import, export, outsourcing, and setting up productions and sales bases abroad. Most of MNCs face gain or losses due to uncertainty in foreign exchange rates. Currency risks are even inevitable for organisation whose productions are mainly indigenous and exports are minimal. This is majorly due to global sourcing agreement between different geographies to take cost advantage in competitive world. These agreements emerge issue of currency mismatch and enhance currency risk further. In India, exchange rates were deregulated and were allowed to be determined by market in 1993. Currency risk directly impact to your cash flows and margins. The bottom lines of businesses are severely impacted due to same. Foreign currency risk arises majorly for: • Importer, due to foreign sellers demand to pay in their local currency e.g. if goods are imported from the United States and one needs to pay in dollars. • Exporter, due to competitive market and foreign buyer demand for payment in their local currency 58

like exports from India to Japan and buyer in Japan insist to pay in Japanese Yen (JPY). • Borrower, who take foreign currency loan like buyer credit loan on imported goods or external commercial borrowing wherein his/her obligation to pay is in currency other than local currency. In all these cases, if currency depreciate, foreign exchange losses comes into picture which directly force you to pay more INR to bank in case of imports and borrowing and accept lower INR due to lower conversion rate in case of exports. The volatile nature of foreign exchange rate poses a great risk of sudden and drastic movements, which may cause significantly damaging financial losses from otherwise profitable transactions. With help of hedging of foreign currency, you can reduce your losses. Many instruments are available in market to protect you from foreign currency losses. The most important instruments prevail in market are as follows: • Forward currency contracts: “Forward Contracts” is an agreement to buy or sell an asset on a specified future date for a specified price. In simple words, it is like reserving a hotel room for future date wherein price reserved in advance. To illustrate this, suppose the spot price of one dollar in today currency market is Rs 65. It means you need to pay Rs 65 to buy one dollar for immediate delivery. In contrast, assume 180 days forward rate is Rs 68 means to pay little bit higher price for dollar on future date. The difference between spot price and forward price is called as “premium on forward contract”. The main advantage of forward is that it can be tailored to specific need of the firm and an exact hedge can be obtained. On the downside, these contracts are not marketable. A forward transaction is an irrecoverable contract. • Futures: A futures contract is similar to forward contract but it is more liquid because it can be traded in an organised exchange i.e. the futures market. Depreciation of a currency can be hedged by selling futures and appreciation can be hedged by buying futures. • Options currency contracts: Options currency contracts are like forward contracts gives its holder right, but not obligation to buy (call options) or sell (put option) to take or make delivery of currency on or before specified date at a stated price. The owner of a call option can generate profit from increasing price, whereas for owner of put option, it is the inverse. Options are particularly suited as a hedging tool for contingent cash flows, as in case of bidding process. • Currency swaps: A currency swap is an agreement between two parties to agree to exchange different currencies normally at prevailing spot price with an agreement to reverse the exchange of currencies, at the same spot rate, at fixed date in future, generally at maturity of spot. These instruments are normally called as Forex derivatives that allow companies to take advantage of the global markets more efficiently by bringing together two parties that have an advantage in other market. It is very difficult to assess how much payment or receipt need to hedge. Normally cost associated with booking of hedging instrument

which will impact to PL in spite of movement in positive or negative side. So, most of management is very cautious to take such decision. There are typically three types of hedging: fair value hedging, which covers translation risk for net monetary assets and liabilities; cash flow hedging, which covers transaction risk on both actual and projected cash flows, and net investment hedging. Of these, the most complex business case for hedging is in the areas of projected cash flow hedging and net investment hedging. According to Corporate Risk Management Study, comprising 307 companies, 77 per cent hedge net monetary FX assets and liabilities, 76 per cent hedge forecast exposure while 22 per cent hedge net investment exposure. The decision of hedging depends upon a company’s appetite to bear risk or gain. 100 per cent of hedging of balance sheet is not advisable at all. Normally 25 per cent to 40 per cent of hedging of transactions is advisable. Most of companies take this decision as per their internal hedging policy. While drafting the hedging policy, one must take into account external factors like geographies, currencies, time period and economic advantages; and internal factors like risk bearing capacity and CFO tolerance. As for the company’s offerings in the solvents area, Mitra adds, “For solvents, we have KPD and KPDP series of pumps, which can be offered in austenitic stainless steel material of construction or in exotic material of construction like Duplex stainless steel or in Hastalloy. KBL has supplied various process pumps in pharma industries using patented replicast technology for various intricate pump castings.” KBL also offer solutions for utility applications. Throwing light on the applications for utility, Mitra says, “For utility applications, we offer end-suction pumps as well as split case pumps. For condenser cooling, reactor cooling, RO systems, body washer and eye showers, we have pumps suitable with VFD driven motors, which can be offered with HYPN systems. In addition to this, KBL’s corrocoat applications have been offered for many cooling transfer pumps in pharma companies.” Mitra further explains, “Each pharma unit have effluent treatment plants for which we have been supplying self-priming pumps for small flow requirements and split casing pumps for larger flows. Now-a-days, provision of fire fighting system is mandatory as per national safety norms. Pumps required for this application, viz. motor driven, engine driven pumps and jockey pumps are supplied by KBL. KBL has a dedicated FM/UL cell, which follows a single door communication for AMC of pumps, spares requirement, FM global audit and for imparting training to users. For formulation units, most of the required utility pumps are supplied by KBL.” In a concluding note, Mitra shed light on the offerings for KBL HYPN Systems. He said, “We have a wide variety of pumps and in house engineering capabilities to select best suitable pump for HYPN Systems (Hydro Pneumatic Systems) rather than restricting only to inline pumps. This was performed by 467 contestants from 34 countries at the last 2015 manus award. In the end, an innovative system for ear surgery from the Leibniz University of Hanover won the golden manus, which is used to treat inner ear deafness and severe hearing loss. Opportunities worth ` 50,000 Crore in capital goods sector Though the demand for capital goods in the country has grown by almost two-and-a-half times over the last decade to ` 3.7 lakh crore in 2015, sectors’ contribution to India’s GDP is 0.6 per cent as compared to 4.1 per cent for China, 3.4 per cent for Germany and 2.8 per cent for Korea. Much of the demand was met by imports, thus making it the country’s fourth-largest import category after crude oil, electronics and gold, as per a report by FICCI and McKinsey & Company. As per the report, the capital goods sector grew at only 2 per cent per annum between 2010 and 2015, compared to the overall economic growth rate of 7 per cent. The demand for capital goods, driven by overall economic growth, has been increasing at the rate of 10 per cent per annum, pushing the imports of capital goods to $ 30 billion in 2015. For a $ 2 trillion economy, the sector is still relatively underdeveloped. The study reveals that the sector could have been weighed down due to low investments in technology and talent. In Indian capital goods sector, less than 1 per cent of revenue is ploughed back in R&D as compared to 5-6 per cent in Germany. The sector has attracted an annual investment of ` 18,000-20,000 crore and has been

stagnant at 1.4 per cent growth. Indian goods sector has also been missing a deep component supplier ecosystem along with limited B2B sales and marketing capabilities. Dr. A Didar Singh, Secretary General, FICCI said “Capital goods is now the fourth largest import category after crude oil, electronics and gold. The future growth trajectory of the sector could be accelerated. Based on the push under the “Make in India” campaign and the trends in key enduse sectors, there are multiple growth opportunities on the horizon in India for capital goods players.” In order to change this scenario, there are certain sectors that need to be tapped. According to Abhishek Agrawal, Associate Partner, McKinsey & Company, if the following sectors-Emission norms regulations, investing into railways, ports, roads, thrust on indigenisation of manufacturing in aerospace and defence, Urbanisation and meeting India’s energy, material and food demands are tapped, it could result in an annual opportunity worth ` 2 lakh crore. He further stated that tapping these could also accelerate the growth of this sector and thus add ` 40,000 – 50,000 crore to country’s GDP. Such a scenario will create additional 5 lakh direct jobs and 50 lakh jobs in total.

Axis drop problem in CNC machines The introduction of Computer numerical control (CNC) machines radically changed the manufacturing industry because of it is key advantages like high accuracy and faster production. In one sense, CNC machines may be said to represent special industrial robot systems, as they are programmable to perform any kind of machining operation. Most of the manufacturing industries face problems in position control of the vertical axis during machining on CNC machines, in the event of an unprecedented power failure. The axis slips downwards due to inertia and gravitational force acting on vertical axis of CNC machines. In case of die and mould applications, where the accuracy of jobs are comparatively very high, the damages caused due to this problem are very expensive when the material being machined is titanium or other costly materials. In order to avoid this problem it is necessary to stop the axis run away immediately, by applying the electromechanical brake connected to the axis servomotor or ball screw rod in advance so as to apply the axis brake in advance and protect the axis run away. The unit senses the three phase input voltage of the CNC machine and in the event of power failure, the voltage to the brake is cut-off in advance thereby preventing the vertical axis of the CNC machine from dropping.
