India has reached a ‘sweet spot’ and can create an opportunity to propel into a double-digit growth trajectory, said the Economic Survey. The growth at market prices for 2015-16 is expected to between 8.1 and 8.5 per cent, it forecasted. Alarming rise in the stalling of projects was the major bottlenecks during the last 5 years as far as economic activities are concerned. Though the Survey has expressed concern over the same, it expressed satisfaction over the counter measures taken. “The good news is that the rate of stalling seems to have plateaued in the last three quarters. The stock of stalled projects has come down to about 7 per cent of GDP at the end of the third quarter of 201415 from 8.3 per cent the previous year,” the survey observed.

Despite having a favourable demographic profile, labour and skill shortage continues to be one of the key concerns for the Indian industry. Suggesting a step towards mitigating this crucial area, the survey adds, ‘Skilling India’ is no less important and deserves an equal attention as the other important goal of ‘Make in India’.

Commenting on the findings of the study Ramesh Suri, President, ACMA, said, “The automotive industry accounts for over fifty per cent of machine tool end use. With customer requirements becoming more stringent, the machine tool industry needs to evolve to meet the customer expectations. To embark on the next phase of growth, the industry will have to look beyond the current advantages it enjoys in terms of cost and after-sales. Learning from success stories of foreign players and upgrading capability and processes to best-in-class will be crucial for realisation of the Machine tool industry’s Vision 2020.”
Over the next 5 years, the entire Indian automotive industry across vehicle and component segments is expected to witness robust growth. “The growth in the automotive sector will propel the machine tool consumption in India to grow from $ 1.3 billion in FY14 to $ 3 billion by FY20 at 14 per cent CAGR,” noted a joint study recently conducted by ACMA, IMTMA and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. The study titled ‘Enabling Indian auto component industry competitiveness: role of Indian machine tool industry’ was conceptualised identifying the roadblocks faced by machine tool industry and suggest a way forward for the segment. It undertook a detailed survey with sixty ACMA-members (across tier one to three) and more than twenty IMTMA-members. The growth rate for Indian machine tool suppliers can potentially be higher as import substitution is high on agenda of the automotive industry due to the adverse impact of fluctuation in exchange rates, the findings of the study said. While the machine tool industry is becoming increasingly competitive, customer requirements are also becoming stringent with regards to reliability, productivity and cost. Competition is intensifying from foreign players who have certain advantages in terms of technology, workmanship, quality, robustness, delivery commitment, etc. “While the domestic machine tools manufacturers have certain advantages in terms of cost and after-sales; technology development will be critical to meet customer requirements, fend off competition and substitute high imports,” the study revealed. Performance, access, ergonomics and aesthetics of domestic machine tools requires significant 16
Concurring on the need for the machine tool industry to move up the value chain, L Krishnan, President, IMTMA commented, “The domestic machine tool manufacturers provide significant capital cost advantage over imported tools. Over the years, the Indian machine tools have improved in technology and are well positioned for medium accuracy requirements, however to be globally competitive, areas such as reliability, solution engineering, new or improved technology and products and delivery commitment or CRM need to be focused upon.” The study findings suggest recommendations for a 5-year improvement roadmap. These have been prioritised as immediate, near-term and long-term: Immediate measures (to be rolled out within the next 1 year) • Improve machine performance and reliability through better machine maintenance practices and implementation of safety standards • Build confidence in ACMA companies that use Indian machine tools • Offer low cost automation solutions or frugal machines for standard tasks to ACMA companies • Organise knowledge seminars on topics such as machine tool technology, reliability improvement, application engineering topics, etc. Near-term initiatives (to be rolled out within 1-3 years) • Improve reliability of peripherals • Drive project management excellence program • Adopt standards for data collection and acquisition • Conduct detailed machine performance benchmarking • Develop Special Purpose Machines (SPM). Long-term plans (to be phased over 3-5 years) • Joint cooperative development of new machines – involve ACMA companies and auto OEMs • Develop “solution” based approach in IMTMA. n March 2015 n OEM Update

Industry Report
Make in India: Placing ‘Industry 4.0’ in Context
With an increasingly globalised manufacturing environment, it is expected that Industry 4.0 must form a key part of the intellectual debate driving the “Make in India” initiative
The Indian manufacturing landscape contributes around 16 per cent of India’s GDP each year and less than 2 per cent of the overall global manufacturing output. Furthermore, this sector employs around 58-60 million people which is just about 12 per cent of the overall working populace. With nearly 250 million people set to enter the workforce in the next 15 years, the Indian manufacturing scene is expected to undergo a massive revamp in terms of investment, infrastructure, and technology. Taking stock of the issue at hand, the Indian Government embarked on a strategic initiative to resurrect the declining manufacturing industry in the country. Under the new “Make in India” initiative, the government has laid out new policy initiatives that aspire to expand the economy’s manufacturing footprint comprehensively. This includes focus on an extensive list of discrete industries for growth in the coming years. Some of the strategic goals of this new program include enhancing job opportunities, minimising imports, expanding exports and last, but not the least, creating a conducive environment for technological evolution. However, Frost & Sullivan study reveals, if companies and value-chain participants appreciate the benefits of ‘Industry 4.0’ and adapt to the changes, then radical transformations in the competitive landscape can be expected. Industry 4.0 is a platform that enables the unification of information amongst participants in the entire value chain – from product inception to design, manufacturing, services, and even refurbishment. Suppliers would have to reinvent their processes and other capabilities in order to sustain in the rapidly evolving market. There will be new and unorthodox companies with radically new business models making a foray into the industrial space. 18
This revolution would transform the manufacturing processes in sync with the speed of change in customer needs – which implies, making the production process flexible without taking excess time. The four functional pillars or the enablers of Industry 4.0 will be Big Data, Internet of Things, Internet of Services, and Integrated Industries which will converge into three main aspects, namely, Technology, Collaboration, and Processes. These three subsets effectively bring about various aspects of Industry 4.0, providing a basic framework to map suppliers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and production houses across these disparate functional facets. Traditional industry boundaries are rapidly blurring owing to the nature of applications that may sprout up during the course of Industry 4.0. In such a cy ber-physical world, the traditional suppliers may lose prominence and eventually move down as tier 2 companies. Unexpectedly, sensor manufacturers, ICT players, and even banking and financial institutions are poised to make their presence felt in the age of Industry 4.0. However, shrewd and tactical collaborations may allow the traditional industrial players to sustain and possibly offer cradle-to-grave solutions. This will be a utopian view with product offerings becoming a vital part of a larger eco system. Muthukumar Viswanathan, Practice Director - Industrial Automation & Process Control and Measurement & Instrumentation, Frost & Sullivan notes, “Industry 4.0 is unique as for the first time in contemporary industrial history we have pre-conceived an industrial revolution. While it is interesting to note that the tenure of each revolution has been diminishing, it is more important for us to acknowledge the fact that the fourth version is likely to unravel much faster when compared to the previous ones.” n March 2015 n OEM Update

Can robotics create manufacturing jobs?
While robotics in manufacturing is not an utopian concept otherwise conceptualised, they are all about productivity and what they could to manufacturing
The growth story of the country in the last decade has been a one of both success stories and bumpy rides. It would be surprising to learn that in a country like India where the availability of manpower and labour are in abundance, robotics could find itself to become a lucrative industry. Industry experts suggest that robotics will continue to flourish in the manufacturing areas, especially in automation where it will be used to perform tasks that require less skill. When computers came, they basically called for a new skill set. Robotics too like computers will drive the industry and will call for an augmentation of skills or a creation of new skill-set for workers. Although, human capital plays an important role, jobs that attribute to unskilled labour or requiring relatively less skill will be done by robotics. Even though human capital is indispensible it does not go without saying that jobs that are heavily mechanised could involve robotics. Advances in technology coupled with integrated technology will give rise to development of robotics. As the demand for technology in various sectors increases, robotics will have a key role to play. While robotics in manufacturing is not an utopian concept otherwise conceptualised, they are all about productivity and what they could to manufacturing. Market trends in manufacturing As there are improvements in the market and as manufacturing activities are set to rise, robotics will play a crucial role in automation. Market trends suggest that robotics will continue to play a crucial role in automation. In a labour intensive economy, robotics will have a role 20
to play as manufacturers will see value in investing and deploying robots as their initial cost is offset within a few months of deployment. While market trends are usually shaped by several factors, it is necessary to understand that in manufacturing sometimes new technologies work well and are adopted by the industry when they result in increase in productivity and growth of economy. Role of robotics in creating jobs Rajesh Nath, Managing Director, German Engineering Federation (VDMA) India Office has some interesting points to share. Speaking on the role of robotics in the manufacturing industry he tells that most of the manufacturing companies in India already have their in-
More engineers are required for the robotic-based solutions as robot-based solution will require hardware and software applications which have to be manufactured and programmed.

cover story
Robotics and automation are reaching a new dimension with manmachine cooperation. Rajesh Nath, Managing Director, German Engineering Federation (VDMA) India house training facilities to train their workforce to be tech savvy with industrial machines. This is a trend set especially by MNC’s where technically skilled workforce are trained from the beginning to accelerate growth for the industry. Speaking of the engineering colleges, Mr. Nath says that with ‘Mechatronics’ becoming an integral part of the curriculum in engineering courses, it has become mandatory for colleges to give students a hands-on training with machines. So, by the time that they graduate they are well accustomed to use them. “This training has helped the manufacturing sector as it has made the students more job-ready and increased the availability of skilled manpower to the industry,” he adds. Raj Singh Rathee, Managing Director, KUKA Robotics India Pvt. Ltd. tells us that robots can create manufacturing jobs in India but we need to look at it from different perspectives: One is the direct jobs created by installing robots in manufacturing. Like all other machines even robots need human beings to install, program, and run and maintain them. The second aspect is the use of robots to ensure a consistent and high quality manufacturing. This increases the business potential of the companies using robots as compared to the ones not using robots. With an improved market and better business prospects, companies progress and employ more people at various levels. It is to be noted that robots can do work where humans will find it strenuous to work especially in difficult and harsh working environment. This is another indirect way of job creation.
technologies that help to enhance operational excellence of a manufacturing facility. Various shortcomings have led to a rate of technology adoption that has not been uniform. In the current context, with renewed industry confidence and a new, stable government at the centre, the country has manufacturing prospects as the economic growth is expected to get a major boost. Speaking of the “Make in India” initiative, Mr Rathee, KUKA says that robots can increase the manufacturing capacity but the economics factors of volume and quality will come into play. Therefore, more robots will be required in some cases. Role of industry in creating jobs through robotics Robotics and automation are reaching a new dimension with man-machine cooperation. Robots are handling work in the place of people whenever or wherever they become monotonous, injurious to health or require no special job skills. This makes workplaces more productive, flexible and ergonomic in nature. “The industry now looks forward to the fourth industrial revolution also termed as Industry 4.0 in Germany wherein manufacturing would be combined with technology leading to a smart factory concept characterised by adaptability, resource efficiency and ergonomics as well as the integration of customers and business partners in business and value processes,” Mr Nath said. With regards to employment and job creation, Mr Rathee says that KUKA has been preparing engineers towards better employability by working to educate them on robots and robot based technologies for nearly a decade now. Apart from running its own training centre, there are training facilities at various engineering colleges and universities. The engineers have a better job prospect with this knowledge. “More engineers are required for the robotic-based solutions as robot-based solution will require hardware and software applications which have to be manufactured and programmed. This will lead to a creation of jobs,” Mr Rathee concludes. n
Optimism and opportunities from “Make in India” initiative Mr Nath tells us that with the “Make in India” initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought the focus of global investors on making India a manufacturing hub. While manufacturing accounts for only 15 per cent of India’s GDP it witnessed a 0.7 per cent contraction in 2013-14. Thus the Prime Minister’s thrust on the sector is well founded. It is quite evident that relevant policies are likely to be announced to facilitate growth of this sector. Manufacturing sector growth is a key factor for sustained economic growth. Also, the sector is not just dependent on demands and investments but also on the solutions and March 2015 n OEM Update

Innovation
Evolution in cleaning of powertrain components Both went into the development of the new EcoCFlex 3 which is available in two sizes as a 3M and 3L version. Custom-designed scara manipulator instead of a modified robot An essential part of equipment is the robot, which is normally a modified standard type. However, despite extensive adaptations, these units cannot always cope with the harsh conditions encountered in cleaning applications, e.g., moisture, high temperatures and use of chemicals. As a result, unscheduled breakdowns and costly repairs occur time and again.
M3 mit EcoCDryfrontal
On the new EcoCFlex 3, one CNC controller for the machine and the integrated scara manipulator replaces the previously required PLC and robot control unit
What strikes the observer first about the new EcoCFlex 3 is Dürr Ecoclean’s proprietary scara manipulator replacing the standard 6-axis jointed-arm robot, as well as the machine’s exceptional design. A view under the hood reveals further details contributing to its superior process reliability, quality, energy efficiency and availability rates in pre-cleaning and final cleaning of powertrain components.
22
The EcoCFlex 3 does away with this problem. A scara manipulator developed by Dürr Ecoclean replaces the standard commercial 6-axis jointed-arm robot in this cleaning machine. Purpose-designed for use in a robot cell, this handling system is made entirely of high-strength aluminium and stainless steel. It needs neither paintwork nor a protective suit. Thanks to its IP69 protection rating, Dürr Ecoclean’s scara manipulator is resistant to highpressure water jets and to immersion, in addition to withstanding booth temperatures up to 65°C. The cleaning chemicals employed may range from pH 6 to pH 10 and need no external robot manufacturer’s approval to be used or replaced. Furthermore, the EcoCFlex 3 overcomes issues associated with the use of different control systems. One joint CNC control unit for the scara manipulator and the cleaning machine replaces the previously required PLC and robot controller. This greatly simplifies and accelerates the programming, operation, maintenance and start-up after a change in parts to be treated. The sensor system for calibrating the scara manipulator is integrated already.
In the pre- and final cleaning of powertrain parts such as cylinder heads, engine blocks and crankcases, robot cells not just improve flexibility. They also allow parts to be cleaned in short cycles, which makes them an indispensable asset in advanced engine and transmission manufacturing lines. With over 400 robot systems built, Dürr Ecoclean of Monschau possesses plenty of experience and has gained extensive customer feedback on optimisation potentials.
Innovative process technology for high quality and short cycles The EcoCFlex 3 also sets new standards in terms of its equipment level and features. A water knife directs the water jet in a focused pattern onto the areas to be cleaned, unlike a conventional round nozzle. Moreover, the machine is fitted with a so-called hybrid nozzle having a variable

Innovation mixing chamber. Thanks to this configuration, both highpressure and low-pressure treatments – in addition to injection flood washing – can be flexibly performed in one cleaning station. All cleaning operations, including highpressure deburring, take place below the bath surface, which helps to reduce the noise level to just 72 dB(A). The idling times needed for part handling in the work chamber are likewise markedly reduced with this new process technology. Thus, in conjunction with the modular vestibule design, it is possible to obtain ‘on-spec’ cleaning results in cycles starting from as little as 30 seconds. Proven energy savings When it comes to resource efficiency and sustainability, the EcoCFlex 3 excels by an energy consumption of only 30 kWh. Demand can be easily supervised via the optional energy monitoring system. The latter indicates current consumption values – e.g., for electricity, compressed air, cooling water and heating – in real time and stores them in memory. The energy consumption can be logged per cycle, per shift or per hour. User-specific tariff rates of the individual energy media can be easily entered via an input screen. This allows accurate estimates to be made of the cleaning costs per part. Energy-efficient drying of parts – without compressed air With its reduced footprint of only 32 m², the EcoCFlex again sets a new standard for robot cells. This low floorspace requirement also reflects the fact that no space is ‘wasted’ for drying with compressed air. Instead, drying is

performed in the EcoCDry system, a newly developed highefficiency vacuum drier which uses no upstream compressed air blow-off stage. As a result, the part will cool down only slightly before the vacuum drying step. Thanks not least to this low temperature loss and the complete elimination of compressed air, the EcoCDry needs approx. 65 per cent less energy than a vacuum dryer with upstream air blowing (based on a calculated compressed air consumption of 2 Nm³ per part). The vacuum is generated in the pressure vessel during non-productive times. This results in about 50 per cent shorter cycle times compared to a system with compressed air blowing and vacuum drying. The new EcoCDry vacuum drier can also be retrofitted to existing robot cells. n Contact Dürr Ecoclean GmbH www.durr-ecoclean.com

Creating a new machining revenue stream!
Colibri’s new Typhoon high-speed spindle easily connects to a standard CNC’s existing spindle, reaches speeds of up to 50,000 RPM, and reduces machining cycle time by up to 80 per cent when working with small diameter tools
Colibri
Spindles believes if you already run milling CNC machines with coolant through the spindle with a minimal coolant pressure of 20 bar, your shop can simply and confidently develop a new revenue stream by taking on high-speed machining jobs.
Typhoon is a solo player Unlike any other auxiliary high-speed spindle, the Typhoon’s speed is driven by the force of the CNC’s coolant. So, no other attachments such as compressed air or an external electrical controller are needed.
Colibri’s new Typhoon high-speed spindle easily connects to a standard CNC’s existing spindle, reaches speeds of up to 50,000 RPM, and reduces machining cycle time by up to 80 per cent when working with small diameter tools. “We have the data from tests on a range of applications using different materials that demonstrate the Typhoon’s superb performance,” informed Baruch Books, Deputy CEO and VP Marketing & Sale at Colibri Spindles Ltd.
Attach and go! The Typhoon’s design and compact size allows it to be stored in the ATC from where it is called by the NC program, as if it were another cutting tool.
As machining professionals are well aware, many semi-finishing and finishing operations require small diameter tools in order to get the precise cuts and surface quality needed. If, in the past, your shop was carrying out these operations on a standard machine, you already know that you could have benefitted from a high-speed machine. “Not only do the small diameter tools used in these operations require high speed, but obviously higher RPM machining drastically cuts cycle time and increases productivity, and in the process yields superior results,” Mr Books adds. Using the Typhoon high-speed spindle, a shop can actively pursue jobs that need high-speed machining. “Just a small investment leads to a new avenue through which new kinds of service to existing and new customers can be provided. ROI is seen very quickly,” Mr Books assures. How the Typhoon work and what does makes it so special? 24
Precision is Typhoon’s middle name The Typhoon maintains optimal cutting speed and accurate table feed. Its mechanical integrity accounts for stability during machining – it’s run out is only a few microns, which translates into cutting accuracy. Productivity, savings and revenue Typhoon protects cutting tools and extends their working life; the coolant used in the process keeps tools cool and clears chips from the table, avoiding broken edges – improved quality results. Flexibility Typhoon allows being flexible in two major ways. One, it is easy and simple to install and is stored in the ATC as any other tool and allows the flexibility of transferring from one application to another. The other point is it saves buying a new HSM machine that limits you to working with certain application only. Productivity goes up to 80 per cent, and sometimes even more, since the time once spent on semi-finishing and finishing operations is cut away. A shop can simply take on more work to fill that freed-up time. n For more details on Typhoon, visit www.colibrispindles.com March 2015 n OEM Update

Material handling for efficient manufacturing A detailed analysis on the role of material handling equipment in increasing productivity for a manufacturing facility
MHE are being increasingly used in industries such as mechanical, automotive, engineering, oil and gas, petrochemical, glass, paper, aerospace and so on
Dayanidhi Anand, Country Head, STAHL CraneSystems Stahl Crane Systems
Material handling and manufacturing go together Material handling refers to handling system of products; at various stages of manufacturing, through lifting, moving, and setting it down in the safest possible ways while controlling the cost of such system for overall process. Manufacturing and material handling are both complimentary to each other. No manufacturing facility or warehouse is complete without material handling equipment (MHE). MHE also play important role in large warehouses where they are used to carry heavy loads. Increasingly, MHE are having wide applications in a number of industries and verticals that involve lifting of materials and shipments that weigh heavy.
manufacturing and post manufacturing. This is important in a world where every second counts.
Material handling has always played an important role in manufacturing and is rather an integral part of manufacturing. To shift focus, it is also interesting to learn that small MHE are playing important role while shipping large or heavy parcels ordered online on E-commerce portals. There is an increasing focus on design, a new trend observed in the market. MHE today are focusing on design even as they evolve to fulfil new demands from industry. There is also a great focus today on automated or computer controlled material handling tools. Material handling tools are also increasingly becoming application focussed. With increasing R&D being done on material handling, a lot of development is taking place in the field. A trend of custom made or personalised technology has led to the development of custom made MHE that allows users from specific industry or verticals to use them.
Advancements in material handling “Over the years, material handling has had various advancements through developments in technology and

MHE are efficient enough to help workers in large manufacturing facilities. Let us look at some important aspects of material handling in manufacturing: • Reduce cycle time of manufacturing • Improve safe working condition • Reduce effort and stress during process • Build a reliable environment for production • Efficiently use equipment, people, space and energy at increased convenience, safety and comfort for working teams.
With the fast growth of manufacturing units across the country, the demand for material handling and equipment is directly driven through requirements at project sites.

Industry analysis on the research front; developments in design have contributed to MHE being used in more specialised applications across industries. MHE are being increasingly used in industries such as mechanical, automotive, engineering, oil and gas, petrochemical, glass, paper, aerospace and so on,” says Dayanidhi Anand, Country Head, STAHL CraneSystems. MHE can be segmented, depending on the various stages of production in which the equipments become involved. These include the following: • Transportation of material to the plant, inside or outside of the plant • Positioning of material at work stations during manufacturing • Unit load formation, to increase speed of handling • Storage of materials post production. MHE in driving efficiency In the last several years material handling has become a new, complex, and rapidly evolving science. For moving material in and out of a warehouse many types of equipment and system are in use, depending on the type of products and volume that are handled. The efficiency of MHE adds to the performance level. “With the fast growth of manufacturing units across the country, the demand for material handling and equipment is directly driven through requirements at project sites,” observes Tushar Mehendale, Managing Director, ElectroMech Material Handling Systems. The demand for material handling is also indirectly driven through growth in allied industries such as cement, steel and others. Power projects are a key demand generator for both material handling as well as construction equipment. For the power sector, MHE is required both at the project execution stage as well as to be installed in the power plant itself for various applications. Products and solutions ElectroMech has a wide product range, designed to suit its customer applications, working environment and usage cycles. “ElectroMech offers precise material handling solutions for wideranging applications in manufacturing plants and infrastructure projects,” Mr Mehendale said. His company’s product portfolio includes electric wire rope hoists, single girder and double girder electric overhead travelling (EOT) cranes, gantry and semigantry cranes, jib cranes, wall travelling cranes, goliath cranes, underslung cranes, as well as special purpose cranes such as stacker cranes and tunnel mucking systems. ElectroMech cranes and hoists are supplied to diverse industries including automobile, construction, general engineering, heavy engineering, oil and gas, power, railways, shipbuilding and steel. Speaking of quality compliance followed by ElectroMech, Mr Mehendale says, “Each of ElectroMech’s cranes undergoes design validation to make sure the right motors; gearboxes and electrical components for the application are selected. To improve the energy efficiency of the entire transmission system in the cranes and make the overall product less energy-consuming, ElectroMech uses geared motors for most of its cranes instead of the traditional motor, gearbox and coupling combinations.” VFD drives installed in ElectroMech’s cranes give an added feature of micro speeds. This, he says, negates the need for repeated starts on a motor when precise control is needed in an operation. March 2015 n OEM Update

BITZER: inching towards growth BITZER, one of the largest compressor manufacturers globally, is gradually strengthening its foothold in Indian market. In an exclusive interview with Subhajit Roy, Rob De Bruyn, Managing Director, BITZER Refrigeration Asia Pte Ltd.; and John Ritmann, Director – Ammonia System Engineering, BITZER Kühlmaschinenbau GmbH talk on the company’s business activities in India and future growth plans. We are trying to get a lot of input here from India regarding the opportunities here.
OS. (A) 85 Series
OS. (A) 53 // OS. (A) 74 Series
India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. How is the current state of doing business here? Rob De Bruyn: Doing business in India is very different from doing business in Europe, China or US. We need to keep an open mind of how we can adapt to different functions and situations of our products to introduce in the Indian market. A recent good example is India launched the space rocket to Mars with 10 per cent of the cost it required to do it in the US. So from our perspective, adaptation and innovation are something that the Indians do very well. We need to understand how we can adapt to the Indian market while maintaining our standards as the most successful private company in Europe. John Ritmann: We have our development department in Denmark with 6 engineers and we are making the global designs for industrial integration for BITZER. We have started off with a test unit in Germany where we made a full scale test with 3 compressors and a complete range where we can do 1.3, 1.4 MW with 78 kg of ammonia. It is some of the ideas we have to stride for lesser and lesser amounts of ammonia in the plants. It is just a showcase of thinking out of the box which opens possibilities of really drive the charts to minimum level. We feel there are possibilities if you think outside the box to develop systems which can have much more compact and lower charts of ammonia. Rob, could you brief us on your recent initiatives in ammonia-based compressors technology? Rob: We have built a test unit in Germany where we have made the additional design. We have built our first ammonia factory in Schkeuditz, Atlanta in USA. At the same time we have introduced this system in Brazil. There a lot of ammonia plants coming up and they have a tradition of using ammonia so there was a huge interest. We have been monitoring the success of what we are doing. 30
How do look at the demand scenario in India? Rob: The demand is substantially high in India as compared to other countries. However it is going to be an open minded view how we bring in the technology and adapt according to the situations. We would like to get the most efficient operating system at all conditions no matter whether it is in Denmark or in India. Here, the situation is high condensing. We need to be able to adapt to any situation of part load of ambient temperature and control minimum generation of electricity from the plants. Over the years, Ammonia has been proven as an efficient refrigerant. How efficient it is in terms of performance and power consumption? John: Ammonia is efficient in terms of part load. For instance if we use 2-3 compressors, the first one will work with greater speed drive and take care of the part loading and shifting in and out of compressor 1 or 2. So we are always running with greater speed drive or we put compressor into 100 per cent and try to maintain the maximum COP of the system all over the operating area. This gives a lot of advantage not only for COP but also for redundancy. No matter if you have a one compressor failure – we can simply isolate it and operate the other compressors which would still function in an optimum way. No matter the demands we are having outside we will always be giving the best respond to COP. This is gaining fellow perspective in the future of energy. Rob: We get wind and solar energy through windows but we cannot control the sun or the wind. We would be forced

to adapt the capacity according to the source of energy. At BITZER, we are putting ourselves in a situation that all the controls of our systems will guarantee maximum performance in any situation. This is the idea that we are looking into. We want to see the constraints to make sure we provide solutions in warmer regions. But there is a clear shift. The industry is moving towards natural gases... John: For HVAC industry, efficiency is always important. That has to go hand in hand with the energy consumption because it is related to our environment and there has to be a balance between the two. The industry is moving towards natural gases but we need to create a balance between ammonia and natural gases to get optimum efficiency and save a lot of money. We are trying to achieve that balance which is not easy. Are you working on some product or technology development keeping the Indian conditions in mind? Rob: We are trying to bring new refrigeration technology to India and balance it with very high demands during the summers. Also, in India, it is not easy to get service in tier 3 cities. How will a machine start to take care if something is going wrong on the maintenance side and how does the equipment limit itself from running that side of the problem? These sort of high-end technologies are available in other markets and will start entering India as the demand grows. Training and awareness also play key role. What is BITZER’s commitment in these areas? Rob: Yes, training is a key part for long-term success especially in our business. Ammonia is a highly dangerous substance and we really have to take care while we start utilising ammonia and hydro carbon in new applications – that is the big threat. namely SCHAUFLER Academy close to our major factory at the Rottenburg-Ergenzingen in Germany. This international training centre will cater to us over 1,000 students in the next couple of years. Currently the academy is having training for CO2 systems. The SCHAUFLER Academy will be the central training location for customers and employees from all over the world. Here we’ll offer the training courses that keep the maintenance teams of our business partners up to date. Do you have any such plan for India? Rob: In India we already do the training. We have ‘green point’ service centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata etc. The purpose of these service centres is to be able to support the product with factory rebuilding. Here we bring back the original factory specifications, guarantee the spare parts as original and bring it back to its proper conditions. A part of this process is education. Interestingly our new green point service centre in Kolkata has been very successful with a number of people walking-in and asking us about the process of repairs or retrofitting. These centres support our customers and at the same time help us to serve the customers better. We do a lot of training here in India and this is important because we see a lot of brand equity BITZER has in India. India has been a very successful market for BITZER. In an aim to educate our customers on product and technology availability, we have set up a Technical Brand Centre in Delhi. This has been a very successful experiment for us because it helps us to understand the local market scenario. Do you feel that India still a cost-sensitive market? Rob: India market is gradually maturing and they understand the technology and value for high-end products. World-wide BITZER is known for its high-quality product and no high-quality products can be acquired at lower price. At BITZER, we look at the optimum efficiency throughout the lifecycle of a compressor. Life cycle cost is the most important criteria for us. The initial procurement cost for a BITZER product may be high, but the early return on investment is assured. What are the major growth drivers for refrigeration equipment in India? Rob: Thanks to the burgeoning economic activities, the country is witnessing tremendous increase in the number of middle-class population, growing demand of food quality, and demand of quality export. These factors are majorly driving the demand of refrigeration equipment in India. How did BITZER perform during the past couple of year? Rob: India is a very important market as far as BITZER is concerned. Its technological support service is excellent. Though we do not have a huge footprint here, it is growing by around 23 per cent per annum. n 31

igus tribo-filament for 3D printing Print your own components for moving applications with the new tribo-filaments from igus times more abrasion-resistant than materials that are traditionally used in 3D printers. These special materials are the result of years of research conducted in the igus test lab, where all products are put through their paces, so that service life, coefficients of friction and wear, can be reliably predicted.
Tribo-expert igus offers several components for 3D printers -- from plain bearings and energy supply systems to friction and wearoptimised filaments. (Source: igus GmbH)
3D printing offers users new ways to print objects with complex designs. This is a good alternative, especially for designers, to manufacture components using the latest low cost technology. igus, the tribo-expert, manufactures suitable linear systems for use in 3D printers, but also the right printing filament. With the iglidur I180-PF, igus now introduces an advanced filament that is easier to process which means that real components for real applications can also be easily manufactured and used immediately. After the world’s first tribo-filament for 3D printers was premièred at the Hanover Show, igus; specialist for ‘plastics in motion’, now offers its second filament that has been optimised for friction and wear. “iglidur I180-PF, the new material from our 3D filament range, is even easier to process than the iglidur I170-PF material presented at the Hanover Show, because it has a higher elasticity,” says Tom Krause, Product Manager for iglidur tribo-filaments at igus. “It is now already available in 1.75 or 3 millimetre diameter.” The tribo-filaments from igus are up to 50

Components for 3D printer The filaments, and other ‘motion plastics’ products from igus are also suitable for use in 3D printers for axis. For instance, igus has recently released the low-priced solid plastic bearing drylin RJ4MP. The bearing made of wearresistant igus plastic, iglidur J4, has the dimensions of the so-called compact “Japanese standard”, which has in the meantime established itself as a popular size for linear guides in 3D printers. Like all products of the drylin linear and drive systems, the new solid plastic bearing operates completely dry and without external lubrication and maintenance. This reduces costs due to reduced downtimes through routine lubrication and maintenance. The complete drylin E systems have already established themselves. They are delivered including a stepper motor in a variety of designs and can be installed immediately. In addition to plain bearings, lead screws, and linear plain bearings, igus also offers compact energy chains for use in 3D printers. The E2 micro series is available in over 180 different variations. Designed for horizontal, vertical, hanging or standing, circular or lateral movements – the E2 micro can be attached easily to the machine using various mounting bracket options. A chain opener is always included in the delivery for the openable models. n

The future of welding The article highlights new norms and technology that set trends in welding
New technologies, new material, stringent timeline, market competition, all which pose a challenge to welding industry.
VV Kamath, National Sales Director, Fronius India Pvt. Ltd. insightful analysis. The report said, currently, electric plasma and arc welding machinery accounts for about 40 per cent of the global demand while the remaining market share is divided between electric resistances welding machinery (24.9 per cent), other electric, ultrasonic and laser welding machinery (30.5 per cent), gas welding machinery (2.7 per cent) and other welding machinery (4.6 per cent). A historical perspective The technology of welding has enabled man to progress mechanically over the past century. Welding which is synonymous with the construction business and every other item involving metals and machines has helped people to lead safe and secure lives. Future of welding is an analysis of the trends in technology that are shaping the welding industry. As global trend is being set by light weight and sleek design for all of technology in general, technology in welding will go that way. Welding is an important part of the industrial revolution and still remains important to the manufacturing industry. The technology of welding has developed so much over the years with several projections of future technological developments in the field. Welding as we know it today is a hi-tech skilled job and historically it dates back to many centuries ago where it existed in its primitive form. Welding has played its role ever since, men started building houses or structures to live in. Over the years, welding has been used widely in transport, to build bridges, roads and highways and to manufacture goods and services. Welding has a role to play in every facet of life where metals are involved. Market scenario The global welding industry is touted to grow at a rate of 3-4 per cent according to current figures and industry reports. However, this growth figure has not been effectively realised owing to the economic slowdown and unfavourable market conditions. Also various new norms and compulsions have put tremendous pressure on the welding industry. A report published by Global Research & Data Services Oy on the welding market globally, has some

“The largest welding markets in the world are represented by developed nations, namely Canada, China, Germany, Japan and the United States while countries like India represent a smaller share of the pie, the report observes. A change in the way the industry works VV Kamath, National Sales Director, Fronius India Pvt. Ltd., has some compelling points to share with us. Mr. Kamath tells us that the Industry is going through a change, both in terms of technology as well in the way it works. The new emission norms are bringing about changes in the technology as they call for reduction in emissions. Also there is a new found awareness about welding in our customers. The foreign clients and investors also look for greater quality in the welding and they also want to cut costs. Changes in welding are also shaped by the way the market functions. Even as the welding market in India is unorganised, we are competing with companies on a global scale. He also adds that the Industry doesn’t give importance to the money invested in welding accessories which are very important and crucial in welding. He points out that, over the past few years welding has adopted itself to advancements in technology and the inclination towards quality. The Inverter technology, once considered the future of welding is now widely adopted by the industry. As there are new developments in global technology they will shape the future of welding by bringing new developments in the field. Mr Kamath points out that, the market forces determine the way the economy works and this is important for March 2015 n OEM Update
feature welding. With new found career options in other sectors and lucrative pay packages, a lot of people are opting for careers that they find exciting and this has created a vacuum in welding. The experienced and skilled workers usually choose to pursue their careers abroad. This has resulted in less number of skilled workers remaining in India in comparison to what is required by the Indian market.
offers a quite challenging and quality welding requirement. At present this challenge is negated by countries in SouthEast Asia and the Middle-East. “Our country is slowly becoming one of the major players in this segment and we see lot of future in this segment for Indian industry,” Mr Kamath concludes. n CMT Glas Schatten
He also believes that the new government is adding life back to the economy. He says, “New technologies, new material, stringent timeline, market competition, all which pose a challenge to welding industry. Until and unless we change the mindset of allotting very low capital investment and giving least preference to training it would be more and more difficult for the welding industry to meet challenges.” Future trends and demands in welding On the Future of the welding industry, Mr Kamath observes that the Indian market is shifting from manual to automation. The future belongs to robotics and automation. Most of the global majors already have the presence and adequate resources to meet this demand. MIG/MAG welding with its variants will play a major role in terms of process. One of the areas, which will see rapid growth according to Mr Kamath, would be the high deposition welding market. Fronius has Twin wire welding in its portfolio and we have seen a great demand for the product line. Welding SPM with very good quality and repeatability will be of high demand in precision welding areas. Oil and gas segment

Graebert India unveils first DWG-based, full CAD solution for Android tablets
ARES Commander and ARES Touch The Cross-device CAD Experience
To address the fastgrowing tablet market on Android platform, Graebert India announced the launch of ARES Touch 2015, the CAD solution for Google Android. Far more than a simple viewer or editor, ARES Touch 2015 is a complete professional CAD solution, using the same engine powering ARES Commander on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Capabilities • Native DWG support: Create and modify drawings in the same format without import or export • An intuitive user interface that is completely optimised for touch and offers an easy transition for any CAD professional • Synchronise projects with the Cloud via Dropbox and soon Google drive as well as other services. If any customer is not linked to cloud storage from Graebert, any solution that best fits his/her needs, can be chosen. • A complete set of tools to not only review, but create or modify drawings on the go. • Designed for tablets of size 7-inch’ or more. One can also run ARES Touch on a smartphone but mostly for viewing due to the size of the screen. Gartner predicts a total of 320 million tablet sales worldwide in 2015, versus just 316 million PC sales (desktops and laptops) with Android making up 62% of worldwide aggregate tablet sales.
“ARES Touch is the first CAD application to include an open API for developers to easily and quickly migrate their applications from desktop to mobile,” the company claims. Previously, developers of vertical applications had to redevelop apps from scratch when moving to mobile. “With ARES Touch, any add-on created for ARES Commander or AutoCAD can now be migrated painlessly to mobile. As a result, developers can maintain the same core stream of code for desktop and mobile platforms and only need to focus their development on Touch UI adaptation,” Graebert said in a release. “While we believe users will keep using their PC for heavy duty CAD tasks, we see a growing demand for agility to work from multiple devices including tablets and smartphones and are very excited to introduce ARES Touch 2015 to meet that pent-up need,” said Wilfried Graebert, CEO and founder of Graebert GmbH. Graebert is a pioneer in developing high-performance CAD solutions across desktop and mobile devices. “Users of ARES Commander 2015 will have the privilege to receive ARES Touch 2015 for free this year,” informed Surya Sarda, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Graebert India. Pricing Users of ARES Commander will receive ARES Touch for free and vice-versa, for the duration of their Graebert subscription. “When Graebert customers buy a license of ARES Commander, they will receive a license of ARES Touch for their Android tablets,” the company said. n For more details, contact Graebert India at sales.india@ graebert.com

Every manufacturer shall enter and progress through the stages of ‘The Connected Enterprise’ that is most appropriate for it, at a pace determined by its own needs, infrastructure, readiness and resources. In these markets, there is a rapid growth due to increased rate of urbanisation and with this opens huge prospects for Rockwell’s products and solutions.” Mr Sawhney further said, “Manufacturing is tightly linked to overall business processes for the enterprise. This has manifested itself in a convergence of IT and automation technologies, driving real time decision making from demand fulfilment back through the supply chain. We have seen great gains in productivity as a resultSmart manufacturing is a fundamental need for all manufacturers.” n
