“Energy efficiency is not a USP, it is considered given”
Amar Kaul, VP and Business Head for Compressed Air Systems and Services business of Ingersoll-Rand India

ngersoll-Rand (India) has recently rolled out an aggressive plan for growth in India. In this interview, Amar Kaul talks on the trends and technological advancements in the field of compressors and his company's commitments.
Q
How do you look at the compressors industry in India? We see a definite shift from oil-injected compressor technology to class O oilfree compressor technology. In centrifugal compressor space, we see a movement from small and medium capacity machines to large capacity machines. Today, energy efficiency is not a unique selling proposition, it is considered given. Customers prefer solutions that have the lowest cost of ownership. Often

compressed air systems in factories and facilities are not energy efficient. System owners have great opportunities to improve operating margins and reduce costs through energy savings. As every industry tries to cut down costs, audits of compressed air systems help in reducing hidden costs and ultimately contribute to increase in revenue. Ingersoll Rand's Audit Solutions offers services that help our customers identify potential leakages and take corrective actions to conserve energy. Some of the real cases after acting on actions from energy audit have had pay back of less than six months after which is pure savings. Through our experience in handling energy audits, we have seen that the audit processes are extremely educational and informative. We encourage our customers to participate and learn the methodology during such audits apart from just monitoring and implementation. With compressed air being one of the poorly managed industrial utilities, there is enormous opportunity to change the way it works now.
Q
How Ingersoll is leading the way through local innovation to cater industries like power, textile, iron & steel, automobile and general industries?

Pentair developing innovative solutions for wastewater applications
P
entair has developed the airlift membrane bio-reactor (MBR) to cater to the needs of municipal and industrial wastewater applications where stringent wastewater discharge norms are expected. This energy efficient treatment concept comprises of ultra-filtration membrane modules which Airlift MBR
process with membrane separation. This technology works on in-out mode of operation so that the modules are placed outside the reactor resulting into easy access and maintenance. Typical industrial wastewater sources shall be from refinery, textile, oil and gas, beverage etc. Leachate treatment is also an application where Crossflow MBR technology is being used. Pentair’s Aquaflex ultrafiltration membranes offer a solution to meet highest standards of turbidity and micro-biology when it comes to reuse of polished effluent from wastewater treatment plants. Pentair has developed Aquaflex skid design with excellent modular characteristics which handle
flows up to 800 cum/hr with an installed membrane surface area of 6,600 sq.m. The skid layout enhances ease of maintenance. Some special features of this membrane are dead-end filtration with low energy consumption, use of low cost chemicals and small footprint. Pentair's X-line is developed in such a way that it ensures easy assembly at site so that a considerable amount of assembly hours are saved. X-line uses the Aquaflex ultrafiltration membranes for the purpose of effluent polishing in municipal and industrial wastewater applications. Some special features include pre-engineered plug and play, minimised turbulence in the X-line rack/ skid and easily scalable. M
allow upstream bio-reactors to operate at elevated biomass (MLSS). Pentair’s airlift MBR technology therefore offers an ideal small footprint solution for municipal and industrial wastewater applications. Added to this advantage, the permeate quality is superior (turbidity < 0.1 NTU) and the same is achieved with very low energy consumption. Some special features of airlift MBR technology are that the modules are placed outside the bioreactor thereby enhancing easy accessibility and clean environment, higher operating flux and low transmembrane pressure. Besides airlift MBR, the company has developed Crossflow MBR with compact 27 ultra-filtration membrane modules to ensure high quality effluent that can be reused directly or further treated.
