Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
We hope that you all managed to enjoy your weekend and reflect on the short month of February. March is a very busy month for all of us and we encourage you to reach out to Advisors and Homeroom Teachers if you have any questions, concerns or need help with anything. This Friday (4 March) marks two years of ACG School Jakarta navigating through the global pandemic. After receiving the devastating news of a staff member with Covid-19 on 1 March 2020, we closed the school for two days to prepare for virtual schooling and begin a 14-day self-quarantine period. It has been a monumental effort from our entire community, and we are all very proud of the way we have managed this very long stretch of interrupted teaching and learning. It is important that we continue to provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills in formal and informal settings in and outside of school. This year, our student leadership model across the school has enabled students to develop important foundation skills in leadership including communication skills, decision-making, organizing, action planning, and strategic thinking. One of the main goals of our work in developing strong student leaders is to provide opportunities where students build strong teams. We have seen many examples of great leadership throughout the year. Some examples of this include events such as Mental Health Awareness Week, ACGs Got Talent, Movie Night, HalloWeek, and the Green Space Project. Students have worked together to learn and develop new skills such as collaboration, organization and most importantly, leadership. We thank our student leaders for the work that they do to celebrate school spirit and keep our community connected. School Photos We can no longer postpone this very important event that has been a part of our school calendar since the school’s opening sixteen years ago. This year, we will once again work with Kingfoto to schedule photo sessions on campus. Photo sessions will be held at the beginning of Term 4. Further details about registration and photo ordering procedures will be released soon. Our values drive our decision making and should guide our actions every day. Please take advantage of “teaching moments” to talk to your children about our values and encourage them to discuss their own understanding of these words and how they relate to actions. At this time in the school year, we all need to work hard to strengthen our partnerships and show compassion when interacting with others. Sincerely, Shawn Hutchinson Principal 2 | ACG JKT

Message from the
VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, It has been a hectic month of shifting between online and face to face sessions in school and I would like to commend everyone for their stoicism, pragmatism and enthusiasm. Mental Health Awareness week was very well received and provided much needed recognition for taking care of ourselves and others; after such a long time in a stressful situation, it is too easy to forget to check our expectations so opportunities and reminders like this are much appreciated. The Year 13’s are one step closer to graduation with the completion of their Extended Essays and accompanying Viva Voce interviews. Well done to one and all. Speaking of graduation, our committee of teachers and students have now met several times and made lots of progress regarding the content and structure of what will be a wonderful celebration on June 4th. We also have a few holidays to look forward to on 3 March and then the Spring Break starting at 2:40pm on March 11th, I hope you enjoy a well-deserved break. As we bring February to a close, I am particularly aware of time and several of its more illusive qualities. Over the last few months of this academic year I have been engaged in many conversations about the past, specifically my youth, many more than I would normally expect. Discussing the past with friends and family, comparing memories of events shared can be a wonderful, warm experience that reminds us of commonalities, interesting differences and also an experience that can shed light on long unanswered questions. Which is all very lovely, warm and fuzzy, but of what real use is it, this delving back into the past? I suppose the point of me sharing this with you is that I learned a lesson form simple interactions that I was not really looking for or expecting. I think what I have learned is that we have ‘hindsight’ all wrong. Looking back has its own inherent benefits, but hindsight has no time-travel ambitions; hindsight has no undoing super-powers. Hindsight is truly a gift of the future, ironic or paradoxical as that might sound. Hindsight is a timealtering super-technology as long as you point it in the right direction. It is never too late to use it, so why not think about applying its far-reaching powers in March?

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 1 In our fourth Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, Year 1 students are currently exploring the central idea “Artists make choices to communicate ideas and feelings. Students explore how food can also be used to create an art piece and how music is used to convey or express feelings. Students were able to experience how music influences our feelings as Ms. Vinnie played different types of music on the piano. They had the opportunity to share if the music played makes them feel happy or sad. They then created their own music through an online app called music lab. We also integrated patterns and shapes in our inquiry, students reflected and used their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes to create designs. Students put on their creative hats in class to create patterns in different shapes and colours. We look forward to investigating different types of Art expression and how Art has changed over time. Check out the fun foodie faces artwork created by the Year 1 students.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 This month, Year 4 students were fortunate to host two guest speakers for the Unit of Inquiry – ‘How The World Works’. We had architect Andi Faaza Rinaldi sharing his work on apartments and skyscrapers, and structural engineer John Tilley share his work as project manager of Phase II of the MRT in Jakarta. Students learned about the process of creating structures and the environmental factors to consider when building apartments, skyscrapers, bridges and tunnels in a busy city like Jakarta. For Science, Year 4 students explored the three states of matter with fun experiments they conducted at home and school. We created carbon dioxide with baking soda and vinegar, demonstrating that Carbon Dioxide gas, though invisible can extinguish a candle flame that feeds on Oxygen. They enjoyed learning about non-Newtonian fluid in a messy Oobleck experiment and created their own DIY ice cream maker to make ice cream.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 5 In Year 5, we have been inquiring into the central idea ‘We are shaped by our inherited traits and our personal environment’ under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Who We Are’. So far for this unit, we have been able to investigate physical traits and learn how we inherit traits from our parents and other ancestors. As we were curious how it is possible for parents and children to sometimes have different traits, we invited Mrs. Jolanda Labora to our class to share her knowledge and answer some of our questions. Mrs. Labora is an obstetrician with many years of experience in her field. We enjoyed listening to hear explanations of how some traits are dominant, recessive, and can be inherited through one gender or another. Students were enthusiastic to ask questions not only about genetics, but also about her role as a doctor. We learned that now we have twins more often due to medical procedures, however, natural twins are still rare. Even more rare is the likelihood of conjoined twins. We will continue through the rest of this year learning about the variety of factors, both inheritable and environmental, that contribute to our identity.

Ode to Pop Mie by Nabiel Muthmain
In my life, love was never a real thing, but that suddenly changed, a while ago. I was too nervous in the beginning, but now I wrote this for you so you know. In my heart I will love you forever. Even if something horrible takes place, my never ending love will not sever. This world can’t stop me from loving your face. But even if you reject this poem, my heart will still love you no matter what. You might not love me, that is no problem, but my love can’t stop for just a minute. My love is so strong even when I’m dead. I won’t forget you, I’ll love you instead.

Oh My Dear by Andrea Tabalujan Oh my dear, you, you always amazed me How we would spend all day with each other
Forever cherish you like the white snow
You are still as beautiful as can be
Is something I shall forever do Miss
I promise I’ll never find another
For you have taught me all I need to know
She was as sly as a fox, but still kind
Since you filled my knowledge with tons of bliss
Heart of gold they would say, I can agree
I hope I am your favourite student
Laying on the ground, our hands intertwined
Since I try my hardest to get good grades
Re-reading her book underneath our tree
For that it shows I am quite imprudent
I swore, swore to burn the earth to the ground
And it shows I’m not the jack of all trades Let’s go back to camp and eat some Pop Mie I miss those times back in 2019 And let’s go back to make more memories And let’s go see the gracious grassy greens
Find the person who would do such a thing It rained that day, yet my cries had no sound Sadness and grieving, to the past I cling Alas, it’s time to move on, my good friends Oh my dear, I’ll love you til the world ends
Thank you, Ms Joanne, since you are the best I hope I get good grades for the next test.

Mental Health Awareness Week The student council started off the second semester with a special event titled “Mental Health Awareness Week”. This event aimed to encourage students to voice their concerns with school and even their personal lives to other students who might feel the same way. To start off the event on Wednesday, we had discussions on different ways to deal with stress and even had a mini-meditation session at the end. On Thursday, we explored how sleep affected our mental health and daily life and in the end, we got creative and drew what we thought our minds looked like. To end the week, we dove into the topic of anxiety by watching a clip from a movie and analyzing the character’s behavior. We all reflected on the week and how these discussions helped us. Students had a chance to submit their concerns to an anonymous advice box where the members of the student council contributed their help in any way they could. Overall, there were many positive reactions from the ACG community regarding this event and the student council would like to thank everyone for their willingness to participate in these vital discussions. As always, please stay tuned for our next event that we have planned. Link to MHAW Informational Video: https://youtu.be/qbFT1Qj7zLA
