ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Three, 11 February 2022
Please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com

The Preschool children had a very busy week, getting to know our new friends who have just started and making them feel comfortable with our daily routine. They enjoyed playing alongside others, building friendships, learning to share, and taking turns in small groups as well as the feeling of belonging.

Rivers and Mountains - Senior Camp - 2022 It all began with a lengthy bus journey on an incredibly hot summer’s day, a journey all the way from School to Tongariro National Park. We had arrived at our location, as that’s when we set up our Campsite for the next few days. We grabbed a bag of tent components in teams of two and proceed begin the process of assemble our new shelter, only then go back and remove the short rod from where the long rod was actually meant to go, with a similar cycle of ‘two steps forward, one step back’ until miraculously a complete tent emerged from our combined efforts. Once the setting up was completed, the focus shifted to dinner preparations, and this is where I must emphasise that if you plan on taking part in the year 12/13 camp, I encourage you to always taste the food as you cook it to ensure it is well cooked. The next couple of days were composed of an extensive canoeing voyage along the Whanganui River, which involved braving the many perilous rapids that lay in our path, suffering from some quite dramatic capsizes while braving said rapids, and more peacefully admiring the beautiful riverside scenery of soaring cliff faces, picturesque cascading waterfalls, sweeping stony shores, and looming half-sunken fallen trees. Our first day of canoeing concluded with our return to the campsite, and I discovered the need to drink enough water during the voyage. After a good night’s sleep, we all felt remarkably better including myself, which was rather fortunate as that was when we had to take down the campsite and fully repack our bags for the next stage of our camp. We then loaded the bags and tents into the vehicles and settled into the next phase of the canoe voyage, which after a rather large rapid at the beginning went a lot smoother, now that we were somewhat more ready for what the river had to throw at us. Our river voyage concluded sitting at around 50km of travel over the two days, finally landing upon a small stony shore opposite a particularly towering cliff face, we loaded our canoes onto a trailer and after briefly getting changed into drier clothing, we drove to our accommodation for the third night. That accommodation was an apartment hotel, and after two nights in a tent and sleeping bag with a travel pillow that was just slightly too flat to provide true comfort, sleeping the night in a room with a proper bed, and a true pillow was a magnificent experience. It was amazing how much you suddenly appreciated everyday comforts so much more, how just a few nights could change your perspective so much. That night we also ate like royalty, with burgers and garlic bread cooked on a barbecue.

The next morning, we packed our bags once again, and after breakfast we climbed into the buses and travelled to our next activity. Mountain Biking. We were fitted with helmets and bikes and soon set off for the Old Coach Road bike trail. There was a little apprehensive at first. I soon found my worries to be ill-founded, and found myself quickly settling into the experience, appreciating the beautiful forests, remnants of the old twisted cobbled road, and especially the two enormous and towering curved viaducts, which remain incredible feats of engineering even to this day, despite being over a hundred years old. While one of the viaducts no longer has a traversable surface, the other leads across a wide gorge to a small picnic spot where we rested and ate our morning tea before continuing onwards. The trail continued to twist and turn, but the gradual climb of the first half had now concluded, so the ride continued at a slightly faster pace. We began the long drive back to Auckland. Senior Camp was a rather extraordinary experience, set in a beautiful environment, with challenging yet rewarding activities, full of new experiences, and above all with wonderful guides and instructors who made you feel safe at all times, even when attempting something you might be stepping outside your comfort zone to do. It also instils a new appreciation for the simple pleasures of everyday life, such as sleeping in an actual bed, and having a solid roof over your head. By Jack Sedcole – Year 13
