ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Seven, 11 March 2022
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, Like me, most of you are currently in survival mode as we navigate our way around this very challenging Omicron period. I have confidence that, as a school and community, we are putting in place strategies and pragmatic procedures in order to continue to operate as best we can to normalise this situation. We do have staff who are either positive, or who are isolating at home with their families, and these staff are continuing with Zoom lessons and supporting students when they are not actually unwell. The staff left at school are covering lessons in their non-contact time and making sure teaching and learning is as streamlined as possible. All students will have continuity of learning opportunities. The number of active student cases is still around 20 and the vast majority, if not all, have contracted the virus away from school. However, particularly in the Primary School, some parents are keeping children at home at present. We respect your decision and, in all cases, either hybrid lessons or material on ClassDojo or Blackboard will be available.
To be kept up to date with Covid-19 and school information, please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
I am confident this period will pass quickly. Looking across to Australia, particularly in New South Wales, their active numbers have dropped quickly and there is an atmosphere of normality which appears to be developing. On a much more positive note, the new Preschool is very near completion, with the playground the last component going in. It really is going to be a wonderful addition to our campus, and I personally cannot wait for young ones using this facility.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone and stay safe. Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Preschool Zooming their Writing Lessons
Preschool had a great week learning and exploring many indoor and outdoor activities. Our learning focus is Modes of Transport and children really enjoyed the activities teachers provided them. In our Zoom lessons, children had a show and tell time. They were excited to talk about their favourite vehicles and this is really helpful to build their self-confidence. This week children learned the three types of mode of transport ( the water, the air and the land). They also learned about different sounds of the vehicles like bus, car, motor bike, fire truck, police car, ambulance and aeroplane. I also told the children that in India, animals are still important in many places in the world as a means of transport; consider camels, donkeys or mules, and elephants.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:

Dear Parents and Caregivers TERM 1 CHARITY: Surf Lifesaving NZ In Term one, ACG Sunderland is supporting Surf Lifesaving NZ. This summer there have been significantly more drownings and water-related injuries than previous years. Every drowning has a catastrophic effect on family and friends, but what is also upsetting, is that most fatal drownings on our beaches and coastline could have been prevented. Surf Lifesaving NZ is the leading beach and coastal safety, drowning prevention and rescue authority in New Zealand. SLSNZ helps save thousands of lives but can only do so with generous donations made by members of our community. We encourage you to donate so that Surf Lifesaving NZ can continue to pay for new equipment and resources to train new lifeguards, in order to keep our water safe. We will also recognise the kind donations made by announcing the Family names of those who donated (if they would like) in the weekly newsletter. This will ensure that no act of generosity goes unseen. To donate to Surf Lifesaving NZ by credit card please complete the form attached and return it to reception or return it via email to sunderland@acgedu.com. If you prefer to complete a bank transfer, please use the following account and reference. ACG Sunderland account: 03 0252 0820953 00 “SLSNZ” as the reference. There is also a raffle currently taking place for the same cause. It only costs $2, and the winner receives an exciting gift basket. Please encourage your children to participate in this enjoyable activity too. Thank you for your support for the safety of our community. The Student Leadership Team ACG Sunderland 11

Travis Hill – Guitar and Bass Tutor We’re very lucky to have a new guitar teacher at ACG Sunderland. Here’s what a long term colleague had to say about him. Travis is a great colleague. He is easy going, approachable, and an excellent communicator. Travis has really expanded his teaching skills and strategies and has thrived (not just survived) with his online teaching during the periods of lockdown. He is extremely positive and friendly, and many of his students remain in lessons with him through their entire time at school. So if you child is keen on the guitar I’m sure they will be very happy to have Travis as their teacher! You can contact him directly to set up a lesson time: Travis Hill travisjameshill11@gmail.com
Violin Teacher - Fiona Haughton There are so many ways that learning the violin can positively impact the lives of our young people. It brings physical confidence through improved co-ordination, stamina, posture and flexibility. It also brings mental and emotional confidence through developing memory, co-ordination of the senses, the ability to perform in public, working with others in ensemble situations, and the ability to express meaning and emotion through music. Children who learn the violin can play comfortably in ensembles, which allows them to engage with their friends and peers in a new way, and to experience performing in public with the security of being surrounded with others.

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022. 18
