ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Two, 13 May 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, It’s yet another beautiful late autumn day, the sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky with a light breeze from the South. It’s hard to believe we are only days away from the official beginning of winter. I have just come back into my office after spending time in the carpark and you as the parents navigate our new/improved carparking processes. You will all appreciate the 20 more carparks available on the Primary side (gate one) at drop off and pick up plus the one-way system we have generated on the College and Preschool side. We understand that there is a learning phase as you all get used to our new systems but overall, I wish to compliment you all on how it is operating. I hope you all appreciate the opportunity to have face to face conversations for the first time in at least 12 months with the College Parent/Teacher interviews taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. I know most staff were available to meet. However, if you missed the opportunity to speak with a particular staff member then please email them directly to make an alternative time. I understand Mr Dawson was away both nights. Mrs Rubin came back specially to see Year 11-13 parents on the Tuesday night even after we have farewelled her on her maternity leave. I personally thank her for that. Mrs Hayley Carter is now back onboard from her maternity leave, and I know the students have enjoyed her return also.

If your child has an appointment during school hours and you are collecting them, please email their class teacher advising them of the time of pickup so your child can be down at reception ready.

I appreciate that students in years 5-13 will be studying hard as they prepare for the mid-year examinations which will begin on Tuesday next week. Students new to ACG Sunderland can find support material specially designed to assist the revision process on Blackboard. Also, don’t hesitate to speak with Mrs Lambarth or your classroom teachers directly. As I expressed last week, our Athletics Day was perhaps our best ever and we had the privilege of presenting ribbons and certificates to children at the Primary assembly on Monday. It really was a wonderful day, both here at school and at the Trusts Stadium, too. We will more than likely run a similar programme on 2023. Certificates will be presented to the College athletics after the examinations. It is great to see winter sport back in action for 2022. I have had the pleasure to see Netball and Basketball games in action over the last week or so. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff coaches and managers who give up a significant amount of time to make all this sport possible on and off the court. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Nathan Villars Campus Principal ACG Sunderland

Value for the next week is: Perseverance Persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

In the Under 2s room, the children have been making the most of the sunny Autumn weather by exploring outdoor play with balls, sand, water and climbing on the playground.

This week we have welcomed new children and their families into our Senior and Junior Preschool. The Senior children have been focusing on their letter of the week, "A", discovering how to sound out the letter and recognize words with an "A" sound. The Junior children have been focusing on number recognition, counting and using numbers within their play.

With plenty of sunshine this week, children have enjoyed being outside in the water play and using kinetic sand to support turn taking and collaboration. Children have used the large concreate area to create masterpieces with chalk, and a Hop-Scotch!

Eesha Ranchhod Year 11 has been selected to represent New Zealand in the Female Cadet Kata Division at the Oceania Karate Championships to be held in New Caledonia in June. We congratulate Eesha on her hard work and efforts with being selected in this. Well done!

Mixed Feelings Returning to school is unarguably full of mixed feelings, on one hand it’s good to see friends again after a two-week period separated from them, on the other hand the two weeks full of absolute peace and freedom is hard to leave behind. Most students would have gotten used to the routine of the holidays and had difficulties waking up early on Monday, picking up a textbook that had been left unmoved, wearing school uniform again etc. Overall, having to go to school is, in my opinion, tiring and I am sure many can agree. Many people have used the holidays to study, for what may you ask? I hope this question did not cross your mind, as this term is very important, and you should know the answer! Internal exams are arriving very shortly! They are often seen as a “lead-up” or “practice” to the Term 4 exams, however it’s still important we try to do well in them. This is most likely the ultimate reason people may have mixed feelings about this new term, exams are a nerve-racking time period that, as far as I know, few people genuinely enjoy. All in all, this term is going to be full of emotions and I look forward to making new memories as a whole!

Rock the Park concert was a great way to end Term 1. We had three bands: Victorious, Sweet Can’t Wait and Amelie & Fabian. They all performed original songs. These three groups are getting ready to take part in RockQuest later on this term. Other performances were by, Hyunju Kim and Tony Lu, who are both taking A Level Music. As part of their coursework, they had to perform an extended set of pieces for an audience. Hyunju covered a number of styles from Jazz, K-Pop to RnB. Tony was the drummer from his band - Black Truths which did covers of songs by ‘White Lies’. As it was an outdoor concert, we had to hire a PA and sound man. He did a brilliant job of making our bands sound their best. He mentioned to me that he was very impressed by our bands performance skills. I too am very proud of what they were able to perform. Coming up this term… “Battle of the Bands” with over ten different bands competing! 7

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
