ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Four, 18 February 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, The first full week of 2022 has just concluded here at Sunderland, and the school is in wonderful spirits even with the rapid spread of Omicron covering the country currently. It is on that note that I have included below the Sunderland protocols for the Omicron outbreak. I can assure you that no positive cases have been identified in our community to date. However, we must plan for all eventualities and the protocols below is part of that planning. If you or any of your family are close contacts, please contact the school straight away, so we can review how this is going to impact our community, too. This is very important.

Please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com

Any communication received about positive cases or students/staff identified as close contacts should be forwarded to the senior leadership team (Nathan, Lawrence, Leanne & Sue) immediately and they will then communicate with the family/staff member in question. Further communication with the family may then be done through deans if directed by the senior leadership team. Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 must immediately isolate for ten days. If they are at school they should be placed in a space away from all others, ideally a separate room but if not available a well-ventilated area at least 2m away from anyone else and wearing a mask. Family will then be contacted to have the student collected as soon as possible. Anyone at school who has Covid-19 symptoms (any of: runny nose, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, a fever, cough, shortness of breath, headaches, muscle pains, vomiting or diarrhoea) should be placed in a space away from all others, ideally a separate room but if not available a well-ventilated area at least 2m away from anyone else and wearing a mask. Family will then be contacted to have the student collected as soon as possible. Anyone with any of these symptoms should get tested and then isolate themselves at home until they recover AND receive a negative test result. For any Covid-19 positive case, close contacts should be identified (if there are any). A close contact will be anyone who: o Lives with someone who is Covid-19 positive. o Has had DIRECT contact with someone who is Covid-19 positive (kissing, sharing a drink bottle) o Has spent more than 15 minutes within 1.5 metres of someone who is Covid-19 positive AND they are not wearing a mask or not wearing it properly. o Has spent more than 1 hour in an indoor space with a Covid-19 positive person who is either not wearing a mask, not wearing it properly, or the room is poorly ventilated, or the room is under 100m2 (our normal classrooms are all under 100m2). Being in contact with someone who is then deemed a close contact does not mean they will also be classified as a close contact. Anyone identified as a close contact should get tested and then isolate themselves at home for seven days AND receive negative test results from their initial test and a day five test. The seven-day period begins from the last contact they had with the infected person. In some situations, public health officials MAY advise household members of a close contact (secondary contacts) to stay at home and isolate as well until the close contact returns a negative day five test. The parent of any student having an isolation period should communicate test results as they are received with a member of the senior leadership team or the relevant dean. The student should not be returning to school (even after an isolation period) without communication of negative test results to the school having already occurred from their parent. 2

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Any students self-isolating at home due to having Covid-19 or being identified as a close contact / secondary contact will be provided distance learning work by their teachers via our Blackboard Learning Management System. Any questions or problems with this can be directed to the relevant dean.

Below repeats the email sent out earlier this week. ACG Sunderland – Red Light Phase 2 I wanted to touch base today with regards the phase changes with isolation! To be clear, Phase Two now requires cases to isolate for seven days rather than ten. Anyone who tests positive for the Covid virus in Phase Two will be notified by text message and be directed to an online self-investigation tool which will focus on high-risk exposures. Household contacts will be managed by contact tracing services with close contacts requiring a PCR test on day five. I also wish to remind all parents that anyone wearing a mask and having contact with others for less than one hour are characterised as not being a close contact. Parents, please drop your children at the gates or front doors and do not come into school unless you have an educational meeting. Preschool parents are requested to park in the preschool side of the school for pick up and drop off also. (When the gates are open, otherwise, please feel free to come through the main school.) We acknowledge these are challenging times and your attention with these new protocols in going to be hugely appreciated. Have a great weekend. Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Preschool had a fantastic week playing and learning altogether. We planned many literacy and numeracy-based activities that are focused on children learning and development. Preschool enjoyed many activities like number games, letters, cutting, painting, messy play, music and movement, physical fitness, use of technology and family play.

We teachers always encourage the children to participate in all activities and it is good for their over-all development 4

My name is Kylie Tan. I’m currently in Year 13 and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. I am wanting to make a chip packet blanket to be able to donate to the homeless, for my service project as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. To be able successfully create the blanket, I will need to collect 25 cleanly-opened (not ones that have been ripped open) foil packages (from chips and other foil-wrapped products) of any brand and size. Chip packets are what most creators use to make the blankets. I would greatly appreciate if you could please donate your cleanly-opened foil packages to the box left at reception. Donating chip packets to me, in order to be able to create something for homeless is a great idea, as one chip packet takes 8 decades to decompose but donating them can bring out good use and help others, instead of going to the landfill. Thank you very much for your donations! To find out more about the chip packet project, feel free to email me at 260003754@acg.ac.nz.

The Student Voice’s New Series It’s week 4, and the Student Voice is back up and running! This year, instead of only having articles about current events, outside and in school, we are introducing a new series! Every second week, we will have one person writing about an environmental issue, surrounding the school, Aotearoa specifically, or something important to them personally. Be sure to look out for these special pieces every fortnight, and if you want to contribute send me or Ms. Tyler an email. Everyone is welcome to join The Student Voice, we write about current events, creative pieces and, obviously, environmental pieces. We hope to see some new faces, wanting to write for us! Start of School 2022 Wow, what a way to start the year! A few days before school started it was announced we would be moving to the red light in our new COVID-19 protection framework, which cast a lot of doubt on what the school environment was going to be like when we started the academic year. However, information was quick to be sent out and we started the year as close to normal as we could in our circumstances. Personally, I was feeling very excited to be returning to Sunderland for my second year because of how much I enjoyed the first. While the restrictions in place were different compared to those we had when school opened again at the end of last year, I still felt safe and comfortable going to school, and all of my worries and doubts were silenced the second I walked in. Sunderland was lucky in the way we started school as we were slowly phased into it due to the Wednesday start and public holidays in the following two weeks. My holiday was laidback, so I appreciated the ability to ease into a new routine. It has taken a bit of time to adjust to the fact we’re now in another year and 2021 has passed with such speed. I still find it hard to believe we’re already halfway through February. Being a Year 10, there have been a few opportunities thrown at me, and the rest of my year group; such as the Duke of Edinburgh and Model UN. There have also been a few things presented to the rest of the school like a new Debate Club which I can’t wait to see. Overall, I would say this year has started really well and while I don’t want to jinx anything, I think 2022 is starting to show some great promise at Sunderland.

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022.
