Preschool

A positive foundation for learning During these early years, children acquire a variety of important skills, knowledge and attitudes that will affect their ability to learn, their personal development, their relationships with others and their future participation in society. ACG Sunderland Preschool encourages children to see learning as both enjoyable and useful and provides a strong foundation for their future intellectual, physical and social development. The ACG Sunderland Preschool is licensed for twenty-four children. The teacher/child ratio is one to nine. This ensures quality of care and education for all children in the Preschool environment.

Activities The Preschool children experience a range of activities both at the Preschool and out in the community. These activities enhance their education and align with our holistic approach to education. Visitors include Police and St John’s Ambulance, Fire Engine and crew, Guide Dog and handler. Students also enjoy visits to the museum, preschool graduation ceremonies, Christmas parties and other trips.

Curriculum The Preschool provides children with the fundamental skills required to succeed at primary school. Since oral language is the basis of literacy, there is an emphasis on language-based activities that provide opportunities for thinking, problem solving and experimenting. Through opportunities to listen and respond to stories, children are encouraged to attempt independent writing and reading. Staff plan for the children’s learning using the models provided by Te Whariki, the Ministry of Education’s Early Childhood Curriculum and Kei tua o Te Pae, the Narrative Assessment, using Learning stories to provide a ‘where to now’ for individual children. All children and their families have the opportunity to contribute to their online portfolios at any time.

Additional support Additional support for individual children is accessed as necessary. These may include Ministry of Education, Special Education with its Speech-Language therapists, Early Intervention staff, Psychologists and Occupational Therapists. We also work closely with the B4 School team and the Ministry of Health, Vision and Hearing Team.

Fees Enrolment Acceptance Fee A $200 enrolment acceptance fee is payable to reserve a place at ACG Sunderland Preschool. The enrolment acceptance fee will be deducted from a Primary enrolment acceptance fee when the child transitions. The enrolment acceptance fee cannot be transferred from one ACG School to another.
