ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 13, Term Two, Week Six, 7 June 2019

Dear ACG Sunderland Community We all woke on Thursday morning to a cool but clear sky, ready for our annual Cross Country event to take place.

What’s in this issue:

I wish to thank all the staff, and also a thank you to our Parents and Friends who supplied all the cut fruit. I particularly want to thank Mr Philip Keen, and Mr Sam Baker and their team of Senior Leaders who lead all the organisation on the day. The racing was as usual very tight particularly in the lower College area. The ground conditions were surprisingly dry and the students really enjoyed the fast surface. Congratulations on the entire school for embracing this very important House event here at ACG Sunderland.

On Tuesday morning you will all have received confirmation that ACG Sunderland has now joined the Inspired group of schools. As stated in the letter, I personally see this connection as being very positive for our school with discussions already taking place with regard to new developments here at Sunderland in the next six to twelve months. Again, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come in and see me. On Wednesday, two students; Fania Kapao and Cassandra Pauling-Munro attended the Wellbeing Budget debrief as guests of our local MP, the Honourable Phil Twyford. I know both these young women got a great deal out of the experience and have expressed this below.

It was (for us) educational. For me, it felt like I was looking at my future as I want to be in Prime Ministers position in the next 20 years. Being in a room of people that I respect and that I now get to rub shoulders with as Youth MP, is nothing short of a privilege. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern showed that to be in a position of power does not mean that you think that you are above everyone else, but you remember that you are human and that people only want to feel OK and a part of society. That is the type of person I aspire to be. And for Cass, it was a good opportunity to gain knowledge from the creators of the budget as it benefits her interest in commerce. Cassandra found the conference to be moving and that being aware of where we are economically is the foundation on which change and social reform is built. She was also very excited to meet the Prime Minister and other ministers as well. She found the experience to be eye opening, learning more in depth of the societal problems that new Zealand faces. We both will cherish this as fond memories and use them to better ourselves and our peers. Fania Kapao, Year Thirteen Student I interviewed the youngest people in the room at the PMs budget lunch for the west yesterday and spoke to Cassandra and Fania in Year 13.Tthey were awesome and gave soundbites for my newsfeed to PMN English ………just wanted to say how impressed I was with their responses -- both great Sunderland ambassadors!
