G
reetings from Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Since January, we have made significant progress on many fronts in the campaign to build a new hospital for our island community. It is the combined effort of a wide array of actors, including the Board of Trustees, hospital staff and volunteers that has enabled us to reach this point. It is profoundly gratifying to see and feel the support we have received from our teams and from the Island community that has rallied behind this initiative. The generosity of so many with respect to their time, energy, and funds has truly brought us progress toward the right hospital for our Island. We still have more to do, and we can all anticipate that this summer will witness a flurry of activity as we make the final push to complete our permitting, fundraising, and enabling projects before construction begins in early 2017. As early as this fall we will begin preparing the site to accommodate the new building and the inevitable disruption we will manage during its construction phases. Our schematic designs for the new hospital have been completed, and the following pages contain floor plans and architectural renderings that showcase the results of the comprehensive process we embarked upon to design the right hospital for Nantucket.
In May and June, we submitted our plans to the island regulatory agencies including the Historic District Commission and the Planning Department, as well as the state Department of Public Health. We are working closely with local and state officials to refine the plans for the new hospital, and listening carefully to feedback during this public review process. To date, the reception has been extremely positive, including the unanimous approval obtained in June from the HDC. Having tangible plans to share with our supporters has given our capital campaign significant momentum as we approach our September deadline to raise 90 percent of the $89 million campaign goal. Donors have responded with enthusiasm and generosity, pushing our total commitments to $75 million as of July 1. The new hospital campaign thermometer hanging on the Pacific National Bank on Main Street is a public testament to the robust community support for our campaign and the steady progress we are making thanks to the hundreds of households on the Island that have stepped up. This progress would not have been possible without the early investments of so many members of the island community who shared a vision for the future of healthcare on Nantucket and generously contributed a campaign gift. This hospital is for all Nantucketers, and we sincerely hope everyone will feel the responsibility of this ownership. Sincerely,
Kevin Hickey Chairman, Board of Trustees 3
Progress Update

T Preliminary Timeline
his spring, we completed our plans for Nantucket’s new hospital and submitted them to state and local permitting boards. These plans are the result of months of work with our architects, and reflect extensive feedback from our staff, patients, and community members. We believe the design honors the architectural heritage of Nantucket, while also reflecting the state-of-the-art care provided inside. And most importantly, our new hospital will transform the patient experience by enhancing privacy and safety, increasing access to our providers, and incorporating new technology throughout the building. It also creates the foundation for our future by providing new opportunities to expand services and attract the best clinicians available.

Maximizing Our Existing Site The site plan we have developed for our property at 57 Prospect Street will maximize the hospital’s current location, while allowing us to continue operating the current facility during construction. It is roughly 106,000 square feet, slightly larger than the existing hospital and outbuildings. The new layout, subject to approvals, will create dedicated street entrances for patient parking from both Prospect Street and Vesper Lane, as well as separate entrances for the emergency department and deliveries to the loading bay. To create a viable construction site for the new hospital, several buildings on the NCH property need to be moved. • The Founders Building will be relocated to hospital property at 10 Vesper Lane.
• The Anderson Building and medical offices will be moved to the northeast end of the hospital property along Prospect Street.
• The old nurses dorm will be donated and moved offsite or demolished.

Floor Plans Level 1
The ground floor of our new hospital is the home for most of our 24/7 medical services, including the Emergency Department and inpatient beds, as well as our specialty physician clinics and primary care practices. It is a welcoming space that accentuates natural light, provides enhanced privacy and safety, and easy access to our services. An expanded Emergency Department makes us crisis-ready, while co-locating it adjacent to the inpatient beds creates flexibility and efficiency to better utilize our staff and clinicians. Bringing many of our primary care and specialty physicians together under one roof encourages teamwork among the medical staff, and allows them to work together in a collaborative setting to improve patient care.
6
Level 2 The second floor of our new hospital is the home of a modern interventional suite that includes two operating rooms, one of which will be dedicated for C-sections, as well as a procedure room for endoscopies. Upgraded and expanded areas for infusion, including chemotherapy treatment and dialysis, improve privacy and comfort for our patients. Our cardiac rehabilitation patients also benefit from an expanded program area on this floor. The privacy and safety of patients will be greatly enhanced in the new hospital, with clearly designated public spaces versus clinical areas accessible only to patients and staff.

The Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital Raising $1 Million for Our New Hospital
A
Tad Lee and Tyler Hardy, Co-Chairs of the Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital
new generation of island leaders and donors came together in 2014 to create the Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, a group that respects the 100 year history of the hospital and brings new insights to help guide its future.
The Friends was established at a critical juncture in Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s history, as planning and fundraising for a new hospital got underway. After a hugely successful kickoff event attended by hundreds at Jetties Beach, The Friends have since embarked on an ambitious effort to raise awareness around the need for Nantucket’s new hospital, and have set a goal to raise $1 million for the project. On Nantucket, in Boston, and points beyond, The Friends are engaging with the people in their circles who love Nantucket and are encouraging them to join the capital campaign for the new hospital. In early spring 2016, The Friends hosted an event at LIR in Boston to raise funds for the campaign and have several initiatives in the works for this summer on Nantucket.

“The new hospital is something that will touch everyone who sets foot on the island and we will need the support of the entire community to make it a reality,” said Tad Lee, co-chair of The Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Vice President of New England Development. “Our group recognizes that there is no more important investment in the future of Nantucket than helping to build our new hospital.” Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital co-chair Tyler Hardy agreed. “We’ve set a big goal for The Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital and that’s because this cause is so important to us, and for the island,” said Hardy, who serves as Senior Vice President and Director in the Global Markets and Banking division at Citizens Bank. “The response we’ve received so far has been tremendous.”
Putting their collective skills and networks to work, their inaugural “Après Beach” event at Jetties Beach in 2014 attracted 225 people to meet, mingle, and learn about NCH. This summer, the Friends are planning another event at Jetties Beach on Saturday, August 27th — save the date!

s lifelong island residents, Allyson Mitchell and Betsey Brooks were already invested in the future of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. As they both became new mothers over the past two years, their relationship with the hospital has continued to grow. In late 2015, Mitchell and Brooks joined the hospital’s new Pediatric Patient & Family Advisory Council, and as co-chairs they spearheaded the group’s first major initiative: the Be Well Children’s Health Fair at the Great Harbor Yacht Club in March. Mitchell and Brooks also joined the ranks of volunteer ambassadors for the new hospital, contributing their time, talents and enthusiasm to the campaign within the year-round island community. “Going through childbirth here was phenomenal, and knowing that the hospital has done so much with the space they have,
I just imagine what they’re going to do in a new building,” Mitchell said. “Everyone who is working on the new hospital is so smart, and it’s really going to expand and improve to make it what it needs to be over the next 50, 60, or 100 years.” For Brooks, who grew up around Nantucket Cottage Hospital as the daughter of a nurse, contributing to the historic project to build a new hospital for future generations was a no-brainer. “People used to ask me why we need a new hospital, which was humorous to me because I grew up in the hospital,” Brooks said. “Both my parents at one point worked at the hospital, so after school I would walk there, sit in the nurses station, do my homework and drink many ginger ales. The hospital hasn’t really changed since then. The care has grown and I’ve needed it in different ways, but you see how outdated the building is. So I tell people the time is now.”
Alli and Betsey have continued their support for the hospital by spearheading the Little Builders fundraising campaign to engage the youngest islanders in the project for the new building. Learn more about the Little Builders by visiting nantuckethospital.org or call (508) 825-8250. 11

Fundraising Progress For more than a century, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has been sustained by the support of our island community. That tradition continues today. As Nantucket Cottage Hospital embarks on our largest and most ambitious project to date, the community has once again come together and responded with an outpouring of generosity.
As of July 1, 2016, $75 million in gifts and pledges has been committed toward the project goal of $89 million. For many of our past fundraising efforts, we have displayed a campaign thermometer on the Pacific National Bank on Main Street. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we honored that tradition this spring with a new thermometer.

Thank You, Nantucket!
T
he new Nantucket Cottage Hospital is for everyone who loves Nantucket. Our new hospital will provide the very best in quality, compassionate care for our patients and their families. From spacious patient rooms to lightfilled lounges, the state-of-the-art facility supports wellness and healing throughout. The new hospital will be energy efficient, with an emphasis on natural and sustainable materials. It is designed to provide quality care today— with the flexibility to adapt as our needs evolve in the future.
In addition, the exterior of the building, beautifully conceived by our architects at Cannon Design, will be aligned with the historic architectural features of Nantucket we so proudly preserve. The design also takes advantage of our verdant surroundings, with a serenity garden off the main lobby and chemotherapy treatment rooms on the second floor overlooking conservation land. A project more than five years in the making, our new hospital has been a true community effort. We thank each of you for being a part of this historic project. With gratitude,
Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President & CEO, Nantucket Cottage Hospital
