W

hat years ago may have seemed like a lofty far away dream – a new Nantucket Cottage Hospital – is now close to becoming reality.

Thanks to the support of over 1,300 donors, we are now in a position to start site work on the hospital grounds in preparation for pouring a foundation for the new main hospital building. Anyone who has recently driven by the site will notice mounds of earth and the relocation of the Anderson and Founders Buildings. While it’s too early to declare victory in our fundraising campaign, the wheels have been set in motion to start this project which will be the largest construction undertaking in the history of the island. In many ways, the new hospital will not only change the physical landscape of this site but will change the healthcare delivery landscape on the island with the latest equipment, multiple operating rooms, an

improved maternity experience and increased capacity. In this issue of Milestones we feature Wendy and Eric Schmidt who express the thoughts of many on the island relative to the importance of a cutting edge medical facility on Nantucket. Both Wendy and Eric have shared their generosity throughout Nantucket and their gift represents an important statement about the critical nature of this project and its long term impact on the quality of life for all Nantucketers. While we have made remarkable strides toward reaching our goal, the housing component remains the last piece in completing our campus vision. We will be focusing our fundraising efforts to raise the last $20 million for the hospital project which will once and for all yield Nantucket with a medical facility of which we can all be proud. We look forward to the final leg of this campaign and we thank everyone who has helped create what we believe will be one of America’s finest rural hospitals.

Sincerely,

Bruce A. Percelay Chairman, Capital Campaign

Progress Update

In December, the Anderson Building was lifted off its foundation and moved across the hospital campus to its new location along Prospect Street

A

fter an extremely busy fall and winter around Nantucket Cottage Hospital, we are on the verge of breaking ground for the island’s new hospital.

An incredible amount of work has been completed to get us to this point, and the hospital campus has been completely transformed. This process began last October with the relocation of 45 employees, including the physician practices of Drs. George Butterworth and Tim Lepore to temporary off-site locations. The Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation, along with Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON) and members of several other hospital departments, were also moved to satellite offices. These temporary relocations allowed perhaps the most dramatic phase of the enabling projects to begin in December: the move of the Anderson Building to Prospect Street, followed by the relocation of the Founders Building to a property across the street from the hospital on Vesper Lane in January. Construction crews moved the 240-ton Anderson Building in one piece during an overnight operation through the NCH parking lot to its new location, one of the largest buildings to be moved on Nantucket in recent memory. In February, a third structure located behind the main hospital that contained offices and conference rooms was demolished. Meanwhile, a temporary parking area for hospital staff was created at the hospital’s property in Gouin Village, located across Vesper Lane just a short distance away from the main campus. This

TIMELINE

Fall 2016: Raised 90% of money needed for building costs through private donations Winter 2016/2017: Enabling projects began at 57 Prospect Street campus June 2017: Official groundbreaking of new building Late 2018: Construction completed, followed by occupancy of new building and demolition of current building

temporary lot will allow us to preserve as much parking as possible for patients and visitors at the hospital as construction begins. In March, the front parking lot of the hospital was closed for a complete reconfiguration, and the parking area behind the hospital was expanded to accommodate all patients and visitors. Construction crews installed a new subsurface stormwater drainage system in the front parking area in early April before final site work and paving was completed.

In January, the Founders Building was lifted off its foundation and moved across the street to its new location on Vesper Lane

In May, Dr. Lepore's practice returned to campus and back into the Anderson Building, and the new parking area opened in front of the hospital. The new parking area now allows construction crews to fence off the area behind the main building which will then become a construction site for the next 18 months as the island's new hospital begins to take shape. Extensive work and planning have been completed to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the current hospital while the new building is under construction, and all NCH departments will continue to treat patients and respond to emergencies while the project is underway.

In February, the dormitory office building was demolished and removed from the NCH campus

Empowering the Future of Nantucket

Wendy and Eric Schmidt Pledge $5 Million to New Hospital

S

ustaining and strengthening the Nantucket community to empower the future of the island is one of Wendy Schmidt’s many passions.

She and her husband, Eric, are engaged in philanthropy that encompasses issues as global as ocean health and renewable energy technologies, while also having an impact on a local level. Schmidt’s support for education, transportation, and community gathering places in downtown Nantucket includes a bookstore, bakery, culinary center, music center and community school and The Dreamland Theater. Wendy Schmidt’s team at ReMain Nantucket has worked since 2008 to foster ideas, investments and new initiatives that enhance the vitality of the island. The Schmidts’ commitment to the island was further manifested with a $5 million pledge to Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s capital campaign for the new hospital. “We’re talking about Nantucket’s one and only hospital,” Wendy Schmidt said. “The one that has had to serve generations of islanders and visitors as the cost of healthcare soared and as technology advanced rapidly, without many options for keeping up with the demand and remaining current. The need for a good solution for providing ongoing high level health care on the island has never been greater than it is now.” For the Schmidts, a new hospital is one of the essential services that allow a healthy year-round community to thrive, and it provides the bedrock for all the other initiatives ReMain Nantucket is

6

pursuing to enhance the quality of life on the island. They recognize that Nantucket Cottage Hospital has helped enable the island to become the special destination that it is for thousands of seasonal residents who call Nantucket home for some part of the year. “Think about how impossible it would be for families to call Nantucket home without the convenience and security offered by NCH,” Schmidt said. “For summer residents, as well, the comfort of knowing emergency or ongoing medical care is available while they are living on the island with family and friends is incredibly valuable and gives people confidence in the uniqueness of this island community that not only cares about residents and visitors, but offers them excellent care. I have even heard some summer residents say the care they have received at NCH exceeds anything they have in the communities they call home.” The recent expansion of the capital campaign to include new hospital housing that will complete the campus and help fulfill the promise of the new building was an important strategic decision, Schmidt said, and one that will pay dividends for both NCH and the community well into the future. “The housing initiative, as part of the NCH campaign, is unquestionably critical for the future economic health of Nantucket, which is facing an island-wide housing crisis,” she said. “The hospital needs to find cost effective ways to provide safe and reliable housing for its staff. And NCH has another special challenge, as well, in its need to recruit highly trained doctors and nurses to serve the island population. Being in a position to offer good housing options will absolutely enhance that process.”

Completing the Campus

A

mid the island’s ongoing housing crisis, the need for stable, affordable housing for Nantucket Cottage Hospital has never been greater.

The capital campaign for the new hospital was expanded in recognition of this

fact: we must go beyond bricks and mortar to fulfill the promise of the new facility. A cutting edge hospital requires sustainable programs and services, and most importantly, the people to deliver them.

That’s why the next phase in completing the hospital campus includes plans to build flexible-design housing units that will be capable of serving a range of hospital

employees. The building will be located across the street from the hospital on land

the hospital already owns, enabling employees to simply walk to work. The building will feature the latest in apartment amenities, a flexible design, and will allow a room sorting experience by using the model of extended stay hotels.

“We consider housing for hospital staff to be almost a medical care delivery

issue – if we don’t have the people and the programs to deliver high quality care, the building is nothing more than bricks and mortar,” said campaign chair Bruce

Percelay, who with his wife Elisabeth contributed the $10 million gift that propelled the expansion of the capital campaign.

Once the construction of the new hospital is complete, the next building phase will

follow immediately and focus on the housing initiative which is expected to begin in late 2018.

The new housing will provide a substantially improved working environment for the medical team and healing environment for patients. The new campus will set the standard for rural hospitals around the country. Artist concept of housing unit

"Upgrading our housing and creating additional capacity is critical for our success as a hospital. This key initiative of the capital campaign will allow us to recruit and retain the best staff to serve our patients."

Creating a Healing Environment Through Design

N

antucket Cottage Hospital President and CEO Dr. Margot Hartmann is committed to improving patients’ overall health and their quality of life. Beyond the enhanced clinical services in the new hospital, Dr. Hartmann and her team hope to create a healing, nurturing environment through thoughtful interior design. According to the Society for Arts in Healthcare, “there is a rich and growing body of research connecting arts in healthcare programs to improved quality of care for patients, their families, and even medical staff. Studies have proven that integrating the arts into healthcare settings helps to cultivate a healing environment, support the physical, mental, and emotional recovery of patients, communicate health and recovery information, and foster a positive environment for caregivers that reduces stress and improves workplace satisfaction and employee retention.” Dr. Hartmann has also introduced the concept of biophilic design into the architecture of the new hospital – a hypotheses that suggests how humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. Dr. Hartmann’s aesthetic vision led her to form a team of local experts to influence the interior design of the new hospital. The NCH Design Team includes well-known names in the Nantucket design world – Michael Molinar, owner of Flowers on Chestnut, Liz Winship, former owner of Nantucket Looms and Cathy Ward, President of the Hospital Thrift Shop Board of Directors. Michael, a long-time hospital volunteer and supporter, has been Dr. Hartmann’s go-to support for interior design advice during her entire tenure as President and CEO. “Michael provides the hospital with an invaluable perspective – he’s a design expert, but he’s also a patient of Nantucket Cottage Hospital and he’s a connected community member who is tapped into the art world,” said Dr. Hartmann. Liz Winship is a member of the hospital’s Board of Trustees and is a dedicated volunteer at the Hospital Thrift Shop. For more than 20 years, Liz owned and operated the Nantucket Looms on Main Street, cultivating relationships with loyal customers and day-trippers alike, until her retirement last year.

Cathy Ward is also a member of the hospital’s Board of Trustees and serves on several hospital committees such as the Patient and Family Advisory Council where she relays patient’s feedback to the NCH Design Team. Hospital staff members Betsey Minihan, Brenda Johnson, Frank Kovac and Shay Maguire join Dr. Hartmann, Michael, Liz and Cathy on the Design Team to bring staff perspectives to the table. Together with Kevin Hickey, Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Trustees, the staff has strengthened the hospital’s relationship with the Artists’ Association of Nantucket, which will be involved in discussions about artwork in the new building. The Design Team has also conveyed to Cannon Design – the architectural firm working on the new hospital – what it means to live on Nantucket. “We’re not like every other community,” said Molinar. “Nantucket is a unique place and the inside of our new hospital needs to be unique to the island.” The Design Team has advocated for subtle Nantucket details throughout the new building; natural paint colors in patient rooms; serene and comforting artwork and photography; and signage and wayfinding that is consistent with island architecture. When the doors open in 2018, it is the Design Team’s goal to combine sophistication and comfort that will ease the stresses that are often associated with a visit to the hospital.

A Glimpse Inside Our New Hospital An expanded Emergency Department will make us crisis ready, while co-locating the department adjacent to the inpatient beds creates flexibility and efficiency for our staff and clinicians. The new Emergency Department will increase in size from the current 4,400 square feet to 7,340 square feet, and expand from the existing seven exam rooms to a total of 12 exam rooms in the new hospital, including two trauma rooms and two patient observation rooms. It will also feature all private treatment rooms, a “racetrack layout for optimal patient observation, observation rooms that convert for the care of behavioral health patients, and a specialty room for OB/GYN service. It will have direct access to the Imaging Department for diagnostic scans, and an additional ambulance bay that will allow two ambulances to access the department simultaneously. In addition, the new Emergency Department will be located directly adjacent to the hospital helipad, improving both efficiency and privacy when medical transports are required.

12

Architectural renderings

The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital will feature an expanded interventional services area that includes two operating rooms, one of which will be dedicated for C-sections, as well as a procedure room for endoscopies. By adding a second operating room, the hospital will have the capability to accommodate elective and emergency surgeries, as well as C-sections, simultaneously. The interventional services area also includes five private infusion bays for chemotherapy treatment and other infusion therapies, as well as a dialysis center with three treatment rooms that increase the hospital’s capacity to provide this critical service.

Island’s Real Estate Community Comes Together

T

he capital campaign for Nantucket’s new hospital has received support from all corners of the island, including individuals, families, businesses, and our fellow non-profit organizations. One major sector of Nantucket’s economy that stepped-up in a big way to support this historic initiative was the island’s real estate community. In June 2016, former Nantucket Cottage Hospital Trustee and philanthropist Maureen Hackett issued a challenge to the island’s brokers, agents, and other members of the real estate sector. Hackett, who together with her family had already contributed a $6 million gift to the campaign, urged them to join her in supporting the effort. She emphasized that a new, first-class community hospital would not only benefit the health and wellbeing of Nantucket, but also directly impact the real estate industry as quality medical services are a major consideration for anyone interested in investing in a new home on the island. “We all depend on this hospital. It is the safety net that takes care of us and makes life on this remote island possible,” Maureen Hackett said to the members of the real estate community who gathered during an event at The Dreamland Theater last June. “You are a key to our success, and this is an opportunity for you to give back. This island has given us all so much.” Hackett upped the ante by committing to placing a full-page ad in The Inquirer and Mirror recognizing all the names and firms of the real estate community members who made a contribution to the capital campaign before the end of the summer. “This is our hospital and I believe it’s paramount that we have a good facility here on the island for year-round residents, seasonal residents, and everyone who comes to Nantucket,” said Craig

14

Hawkins, broker at the Maury People Sotheby’s International. “It’s our community’s hospital, and I feel strongly that everyone should contribute whatever they can.” In just two short months following Hackett’s challenge, a total of 87 individuals representing 23 different island real estate firms contributed more than $150,000 to the campaign. And beyond the immediate impact of the gifts, the real estate community’s support demonstrated to other sectors of the island economy just how important the new hospital campaign is to everyone on Nantucket. “Our island's population has grown tremendously over the previous three decades and our needs, especially with health care have changed greatly,” said Bill Liddle, principal broker at Great Point Properties, who urged the members of his office to join him answering Hackett’s challenge and contributing to the campaign. “The new Cottage Hospital will meet the needs of our 21st century population and I want to be a part of this major endeavor.”

Spotlight: Allyson and Sean Mitchell Longtime island residents Sean and Alli Mitchell have a growing family. Over the past two years, the Mitchells have welcomed two healthy boys to their family – Thomas and Patrick – who joined them and their three dogs under one roof. Sean, a member of the Nantucket Fire Department, and Alli, a property manager and member of the real estate community, have become well acquainted with Nantucket Cottage Hospital during this time. “I wasn’t someone who used the hospital too much in the past,” Alli said. “But now? You’d have to pry me off this island to have a baby anywhere else!” Beyond their experiences at The Birthplace, the Mitchells know that their family and the community they love depend on Nantucket Cottage Hospital in so many ways. From routine check-ups with their children’s primary care physician, to visits to the Emergency Department or the Walk-In Care Service, the hospital has given them the confidence to build their lives on Nantucket. “It’s comforting to go to there and everyone from the reception to the nurses to the doctors all know you and your family,” Alli said. “From day one, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has been awesome and we know that a new hospital building will only enhance the patient experience even more.” 15

Dr. Joel Hass, Nantucket’s New Physician

N

antucket Cottage Hospital is pleased to welcome Joel J. Hass, MD, to the hospital’s medical staff as a full-time, year-round primary care physician.

Dr. Hass, who signed a five-year commitment with the hospital and has purchased a home on the island, will open his practice at Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s office at 4 Bartlett Road this summer before eventually moving into the new hospital building when it is completed in 2018. His practice will be open to new patients of all ages, and Dr. Hass is looking forward to welcoming families and seeing island pediatric patients for their ongoing medical care. “As the complexity of healthcare continues to grow and access to primary care continues to burden Nantucket, I am eager to do my part to help island residents get the care they need,” said Dr. Hass. “A healthy partnership between patient and physician will allow patients to gain the most out of the healthcare system. I believe my 25 years of experience practicing medicine will help me to serve the needs of this great island.”

16

Dr. Hass will join the primary care group practice at Nantucket Cottage Hospital that includes Drs. Kristy Acosta, George Butterworth, Mimi Koehm, and Diane Pearl. His hiring demonstrates Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s continuing efforts to provide the island community with a full complement of physicians of varying specialties, and options for primary care. “Dr. Hass shares our commitment to meeting the primary care needs of the island and we hope the community will join us in giving him a warm welcome to Nantucket,” said Dr. Margot Hartmann, President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “His background in successful family medicine practices and familiarity with the Cape and Islands area make him a good fit for our community, at a time when the Nantucket population continues to grow and the need for primary has never been greater.” Dr. Hass was previously affiliated with the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and most recently operated Hass Family Medicine in Sandwich, Mass. He is fully certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and is a graduate of the Chicago Medical School.
