Thank you for your support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital!

Welcome to the 2018 Boston Pops on Nantucket concert!

Now well into the second decade of this beloved event, it’s hard to imagine summer on Nantucket without the Pops. It’s also hard for me to imagine how Nantucket Cottage Hospital could exist without the generous support we receive from this event. As our largest and most important fundraiser, the Boston Pops on Nantucket sustains everything we do as a hospital, and serves as a financial buffer for our organization over the off-season months when our volume drops off, but our fixed costs remain high. Tonight’s event occurs as we are on the cusp of an historic milestone: the completion of the island’s new hospital. Our dynamic new facility will vastly improve the patient experience, enhance access to our medical providers, and implement new technology to promote better care. While our capital fundraising campaign is separate and distinct from this evening’s fundraiser, the Boston Pops on Nantucket will continue to provide the resources necessary to fill the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital with the best people and programs to fulfill the promise of the new facility. Since we gathered here at Jetties Beach last year, we have recruited and hired a number of new providers, including a primary care physician, a general surgeon, an internist, as well as two physician assistants, expanding our capacity to serve patients and allowing them to stay on the island for more of their care. These are just a few of the examples of the impact your presence here tonight creates for our hospital and our patients. On behalf of everyone at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, thank you.

This celebration of our community hospital is always one of the best nights of the summer on Nantucket. With the incredible music, the fireworks, and the great company of family, friends and neighbors, we should not forget what this event means for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Your presence here tonight means so much to the nurses, physicians and other hospital staff at NCH, and most of all, the patients who rely on quality medical care 30 miles at sea. We have a wonderful evening of entertainment planned for you tonight, headlined by conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. This will mark the 22nd year they have performed on the island at Jetties Beach. Joining the Pops after intermission will be RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles, who will be playing several of the Fab Four’s timeless hit songs. It is a privilege to serve as the chairs of the 2018 Boston Pops on Nantucket and to carry on this remarkable tradition that brings the island together like no other summer event. A concert on the beach with more than 7,000 guests is a feat of logistics, and our team could not pull this off without the help of hundreds of volunteers and vendors who come back year after year to share their time and talents. We are also deeply grateful for tonight’s many underwriters, including presenting sponsors Jill and Stephen Karp, and Fidelity Investments. The Boston Pops on Nantucket represents the extraordinary relationship between this community and its hospital, and we thank you for being part of this special night. Sincerely,

Sincerely, Sarah & Jeff Newton Chairs, 2018 Boston Pops on Nantucket Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President & CEO, Nantucket Cottage Hospital

Conductor Having celebrated his twentieth anniversary as Boston Pops Conductor in 2015, Keith Lockhart is the second longest-tenured conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since its founding in 1885. He took over as conductor in 1995, following John Williams’s thirteen-year tenure from 1980 to 1993; Mr. Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler, who was at the helm of the orchestra for nearly fifty years. Keith Lockhart, who occupies the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair, has conducted more than 1,900 Boston Pops concerts, most of which have taken place during the orchestra’s spring and holiday seasons in Boston’s historic Symphony Hall. He has also led the Pops in 79 televisions shows, annual appearances at Tanglewood, 43 national tours to more than 150 cities in 38 states, and four international tours to Japan and Korea. The annual July 4 Boston Pops concert draws a live audience of over half a million to the Charles River Esplanade and millions more who view it on television or live webcast. In 2017 the Pops organization presented its first self-produced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.

Keith Lockhart’s increased focus on musical theater has attracted leading Broadway artists to the Pops stage. He has worked closely with hundreds of talented young musicians, including Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center, college students from the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, and area high school students. He introduced the PopSearch talent competition and the innovative JazzFest and EdgeFest series, featuring prominent jazz and indie artists performing with the Pops. Having just completed an eight-year tenure as principal conductor, Keith Lockhart is now chief guest conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London, which he led in the June 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II; he is also artistic director of the Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival in North Carolina. Prior to his BBC appointment, he spent eleven years as music director of the Utah Symphony, which he led at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America, as well as many prestigious orchestras in Asia and Europe. Prior to coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Keith Lockhart began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of seven. He holds degrees from Furman University and Carnegie Mellon University, and honorary doctorates from several American universities. Visit keithlockhart.com for further information.

The list of more than 250 guest artists with whom Mr. Lockhart has collaborated is a virtual “who’s who” of performers and pop culture icons. He has led eight albums on the RCA Victor/BMG Classics label, including two—The Celtic Album and The Latin Album—that earned Grammy nominations. Recent releases on Boston Pops Recordings include A Boston Pops Christmas–Live from Symphony Hall and The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers. Released at the beginning of the 2017 Pops season, Lights, Camera…Music! Six Decades of John Williams features Keith Lockhart leading the Boston Pops in a collection of Williams compositions from the 1960s onward, some of which can be considered rarities. 10

In 2018 the Boston Pops entered its 133rd season of entertaining audiences in Boston and beyond. Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart marked his 24th year at the helm of the orchestra. In 1881 Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, calling its establishment “the dream of my life.” From the start he intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his musicians. In May 1885—a little more than a month before the inaugural “Promenade Concert”—German-born conductor Adolf Neuendorff, under the aegis of the BSO, conducted a series of “Popular Concerts” in the Boston Music Hall, where the audience sat in typical concert seating and no refreshments were served. On July 11, 1885, Neuendorff—who became the first conductor of the Pops, before that name was officially adopted—led the first official “Promenade Concert,” distinguished from “Popular Concerts” by virtue of seating (tables and chairs instead of auditorium-style rows), program format (three parts divided by two intermissions, during which patrons could promenade around the concert hall), and the availability of food and beverages. For the rest of the 19th century, although formally called “Promenade Concerts,” they continued to be referred to informally as “Popular,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name officially adopted in 1900. The following year the orchestra performed for the first time in its new home, Symphony Hall. There were seventeen Pops conductors—beginning with the aforementioned Adolf Neuendorff—who preceded the legendary Arthur Fiedler (1930-1979). The first American-born musician to lead the orchestra, he established the Boston Pops as a national icon. When John Williams (1980-1993) succeeded Fiedler in 1980, he was the most highly acclaimed composer in Hollywood, and today, with 51 Academy Award nominations, he is the most-nominated living person in Academy history. With the Pops, Mr. Williams made a series of best-selling recordings, broadened and updated the Pops repertoire, and entertained audiences with live orchestral accompaniment to film clips of memorable movie scenes, many of which featured iconic music from his own scores. Keith Lockhart (1995-present) has led concerts spotlighting artists from virtually every corner of the entertainment world, all the while maintaining the Pops’ appeal to its core audience. He has made 79 television shows, led 43 national and four overseas tours, led the Pops at several high-profile sports events, and recorded fourteen albums. Mr. Lockhart’s tenure has been marked by a dramatic increase in touring, the orchestra’s first Grammy nominations, the first major network national broadcast of the July Fourth concert on the Charles River Esplanade, and the release of the Boston Pops’ first self-produced and self-distributed recordings. In 2017 the July Fourth concert opened a new page in its history, as the Pops organization presented its first self-produced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.

THANK YOU

THANK YOU

The Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation thanks the following businesses and individuals who helped to make this year’s Boston Pops on Nantucket concert possible.

Over the past year, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has recruited and hired new medical providers to expand access and allow patients to stay on-island for more of their medical care. These new additions to the NCH medical staff demonstrate that the promise of the new hospital is already bearing fruit, even before the building opens.

Frank O’Connor, MD

Last October, Nantucket Cottage Hospital welcomed a new full-time staff surgeon, Dr. Frank O’Connor, to the medical staff and surgical team. Dr. O’Connor, a former captain in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, brings vast general surgery experience and laparoscopic surgical skills to the island, and will be an important part of the team that will maximize the capabilities of an expanded surgical suite within the new hospital. Dr. O’Connor has served as a surgeon at Naval hospitals in North Carolina, Spain, Rhode Island, and at Camp Lejeune. Over his 26 years in the military, Dr. O’Connor was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, aboard the USNS Comfort in support of Hurricane Katrina relief in 2005, as well as in Kuwait, and Djibouti in Africa.

Derek Andelloux, MD

In April, Dr. Derek Andelloux joined the medical staff as a full-time, year-round primary care physician. Dr. Andelloux’s new family practice opened in the hospital’s Anderson Building at 57 Prospect Street where he is welcoming new patients of all ages, and serving patients at the Walk-In Care service. Dr. Andelloux was previously affiliated with the South County Medical Group in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, where his practice provided care to more than 2,000 patients of all ages. He was also part of South County Hospital’s urgent care service, and helped oversee nurse practitioners and registered nurses in the management of acute injuries and medical illnesses.

Chris Brannigan, PA-C

Chris Brannigan, PA-C, joined the medical staff in May as a full-time physician assistant who will support the primary care practices. Brannigan, a former island resident, has returned to Nantucket after several years working overseas as a medical health officer with the St. George International School in Sofia, Bulgaria. Prior to that, Brannigan served as a medical hospitalist at the Anne Arundel Medical Group in Maryland.

John D'Avella, MD, FASN

In addition to Dr. O’Connor, we welcomed Dr. John D'Avella to the hospital’s medical staff as an internal medicine physician. Dr. D’Avella moved to the island year-round following a distinguished career in Connecticut, where he was a physician at Hartford Hospital for more than 30 years, with an extensive background in nephrology and dialysis. Dr. D’Avella joined Dr. Diane Pearl’s practice on a part-time basis, while also providing nephrology consults in the hospital’s medical/surgical unit and in the emergency department, and accepting referrals for patients with kidney issues, difficult to manage hypertension, diabetes, and kidney stones.

24

Caitlin Kaplan, PA-C

Caitlin Kaplan, PA-C, joined the medical staff as a full-time physician assistant in June and supports the Walk-In Care service and primary care practices. Kaplan, who previously worked at Nantucket Cottage Hospital as an emergency room technician, has returned to the island after completing additional education and clinical training through Northeastern University and serving as a physician assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital.

25

Just over one year after Nantucket Cottage Hospital staff and island community members gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony for Nantucket’s new hospital, the facility is now nearing completion and we are preparing to open what will be one of the finest community hospitals in the country. Over the past year, the new hospital has risen behind the existing building, creating a sense of excitement and anticipation among patients, staff, and community members who have witnessed the dramatic progress on a daily basis. As of late July, the interior of the building was a beehive of activity as construction crews put the finishing touches on the 106,000-squarefoot facility, while the hospital administration is fine-tuning the plan to transition into the new building before the end of 2018. While the exterior of the new hospital was designed to reflect the island’s architectural heritage, with the requisite cedar shingles of course, the interior will be state-of-the-art. The new facility will be modern, efficient, and flexible enough to adapt to the rapidly changing nature of health care delivery and meet the challenges that come with being the ultimate safety net for a community 30 miles at sea. When patients enter the new building later this year, their entire experience will be transformed through enhanced privacy and safety, increased access to providers, and new technology throughout the building.

26

What they may not notice right away is that the new building will also set a new standard of resiliency for the island. The hospital has been designed and is being constructed to withstand hurricane-force winds in excess of 150 mph. The design of the facility factors in lessons learned from other hospitals that have experienced crippling power outages and other damage during natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. That’s why the new hospital’s mechanical systems have been installed on the roof, rather than in a basement, to preclude the possibility of a flood knocking out power. New redundancies in the electrical system, including two 500kw generators, will make the building even more resilient. The new hospital will also be certified as a LEED Gold v4 building, a standard that will provide synergies within the building systems, solutions for optimizing performance, and allow NCH to achieve better environmental and economic outcomes from the new facility. These advances will lower our operating costs, making our organization financially sound, and allow us to invest more resources in programs and services instead of an outdated and aging facility. Most of all, the new facility will create the foundation for our future by providing new opportunities to expand services and attract the best clinicians. The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital is an investment in the future of the island, and will be the hub for the community’s health and wellness for the next 50-plus years. The new hospital is being funded entirely by private donations to our capital campaign, with no taxpayer support, and represents the largest fundraising effort in island history. To the hundreds of Nantucket residents and families who have already contributed, we thank you.

Stay tuned for our grand opening events!

On Nantucket, we’re bound together not only by the Atlantic but something even deeper: the sense of responsibility we feel for each other. It brings out the best in us. Challenges us to be more resourceful, more collaborative and more determined than ever to meet the healthcare needs of year-round residents and summer visitors alike. On behalf of our island doctors and the entire staff at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, thank you for your support by attending tonight’s event.

The Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation was created to advance the mission and programs of the island’s nonprofit hospital and to secure the future for the next generation of Nantucketers. Working closely with volunteers, staff, and the Board of Trustees, the Foundation encourages participation through fundraising, events, community outreach, and communications. Please contact one of the members of the Foundation team to learn how you can be more involved or to answer any questions. You can find us in the Founders Building at the hospital, or contact us below.
