MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD Good evening and welcome to the 23rd annual Boston Pops on Nantucket!
T
hank you for joining us tonight and supporting Nantucket Cottage Hospital at our largest fundraiser that benefits all aspects of patient care 30 miles out to sea.
Tonight, we’re celebrating our community and how it came together in support of the remarkable capital campaign that has resulted in Nantucket’s new hospital, the first new medical facility on the island in more than 60 years. Thanks to you, our new building is now open, we are providing exceptional care to patients in this dynamic facility, and our capital campaign is nearly complete. The funds raised this evening at the Pops will help sustain our operations in the new hospital, and your contributions touch every department in the new building, and thus every patient who walks through our doors seeking care. While this year is my last as President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, I will leave with my heart full, comforted by the knowledge that NCH will always have a generous and supportive community that understands the importance of a remote island hospital. It has been a privilege to represent NCH at the Pops, and wonderful to see Nantucket residents and visitors come out year after year to be part of this event. It is just as important to us today as it was 23 years ago when this tradition began. So, thank you once again for being part of the Boston Pops on Nantucket, and enjoy tonight’s entertainment! Sincerely,
Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President & CEO, Nantucket Cottage Hospital

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRS Laura & Bob Reynolds Greetings and welcome to Jetties Beach for the 2019 Boston Pops on Nantucket concert!
W
e are so grateful for your presence here tonight as we come together in support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital during an historic year for this island institution. The new hospital is now open, so tonight will be a celebration of the completion of this years-long project, and the funds we contribute tonight go directly toward sustaining excellent care in our island’s new healthcare facility. This will be the 23rd edition of the Boston Pops on Nantucket, and we have an extraordinary evening of entertainment ahead of us. As always, tonight’s event is headlined by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, which includes some of the finest musicians in the country. Joining the Pops after intermission will be The Spinners, who will be playing the classic sounds of Motown and I’m sure will have all of us out of our seats and dancing. We are so proud to serve as the chairs for the 2019 Boston Pops on Nantucket, joining the hundreds of volunteers, vendors, and hospital staff members who make this wonderful event happen. This concert brings the island community together in support of the one organization that everyone on Nantucket needs, and we can all be proud of the way in which it helps sustain Nantucket Cottage Hospital. We also want to express our gratitude to tonight’s many underwriters, including the presenting sponsors, Jill and Stephen Karp, and Fidelity Investments. So, thank you once again for being here tonight, and enjoy the show! Sincerely,

David Gregory Host
D
avid Gregory has spent the last three decades in journalism. During his career his work has taken him across the country and around the world. He is now a political analyst on CNN as well as a visiting professor at Georgetown University. David also speaks around the country about politics, leadership, media and, perhaps surprisingly, on FAITH after writing a critically acclaimed memoir, “How’s Your Faith?” in 2015.
Best known for his nearly twenty years at NBC News, David served for six years as the moderator of Meet the Press and Chief White House Correspondent during the entire Presidency of George W. Bush. As a correspondent, David covered the trials of OJ Simpson and Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh as well as other breaking news around the country. He contributed anchoring duties to all the network’s major programs including Today and Nightly News and served as a political analyst. Gregory traveled with President Bush on 9-11 and during Mr. Bush’s first visit to Ground Zero after the attacks. From the White House Gregory covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and earned a reputation as the toughest questioner in the press corps. At Meet the Press, David scored a string of exclusive interviews generating headlines across the world, including the interview with Vice President Joe Biden which represented a major shift by the administration on gay marriage. David also broadcast from Afghanistan after conducting the first interview with General David Petraeus once he took up his position leading US forces there. During the 2012 campaign he moderated a debate among the Republican candidates as part of a special broadcast and conducted interviews with numerous foreign heads of state. David was a staple of the network’s special coverage at NBC- anchoring the breaking news of Osama Bin Laden’s capture and death and was a key player in election night coverage spanning four Presidential cycles. In addition to Georgetown, David has served as a scholar in residence at American University’s School of International Service and as a professor of the practice at Tufts University. David is also involved in nonprofit work serving on the board of Martha’s Table in Washington, Cardigan Mountain School in New Hampshire and the Dreamland Theatre on Nantucket. He lives in Washington DC with his three children and his wife, the litigator Beth Wilkinson. 9
Brynn Cartelli
Singing the National Anthem
A
t age fifteen, Brynn Cartelli was crowned the winner of Season 14 of The Voice making her the youngest champion in the history of the competition. Her debut single “Walk My Way,” written by Julia Michaels (Britney Spears, Selena Gomez) and Justin Tranter (Justin Bieber, Gwen Stefani), peaked at number 2 on the all genre iTunes chart and has amassed over 2 million streams in the US alone. She recently followed up with “Last Night’s Mascara,” a self-penned track that sees her collaborating with Jesse Shatkin (Kelly Clarkson, Sia) and Mozella (Madonna, Miley Cyrus) for a brilliantly candid anthem. Now sixteen, her latest release is the self-penned track “Grow Young (Version 1),” which she recently debuted on The Voice. The Longmeadow, Massachusetts native’s passion for music began early on with piano lessons at just five years old followed by guitar. Drawing influence from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Adele, Coldplay, Allen Stone and Stevie Nicks, Brynn’s dream is to bring darker tones and lyrics to pop music that fans of any age can connect with. As a Voice contestant, Cartelli performed stunning covers including Coldplay’s “Fix You,” Adele’s “Skyfall” and a beautiful rendition of “What the World Needs Now,” all of which made it into the Top 10 on iTunes. Since winning The Voice, Cartelli has been nominated for a People’s Choice Award and has appeared on the TODAY Show, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Radio Disney Music Awards and at Fenway Park. Poised for a massive year ahead, she is currently in the studio working on her debut project and just finished touring as opening act for Kelly Clarkson on her North American Meaning Of Life Tour.

The Spinners Special Guests
M
ost often thought of as a Motown recording act, the classic group sound of legendary R&B recording artists, The Spinners has never lost its universal appeal. Throughout the years they have sold millions of records and topped both the Pop and R&B charts with smash hits like “I’ll Be Around” and “Then Came You.” Today, original member Henry Fambrough is joined onstage by lead singer Charlton Washington, high tenor Marvin Taylor, tenor Ronnie Moss, and bass singer Jessie Peck; a soul-infused 5-piece band, led by Keith Ferguson, backs them up. After a brief time at Motown, The Spinners signed to Atlantic Records in 1972. There, under the helm of producer and songwriter Thom Bell, The Spinners charted five top 100 singles (and two top tens) from their first post-Motown album, Spinners (1972) and went on to become one of the biggest soul groups of the 1970s. A partial list of their hit singles on Atlantic include “Mighty Love,” “Then Came You,” “I’ll Be Around,” “One Of A Kind (Love Affair),” “Games People Play,” and “Could It Be.” In 1979, The Spinners completed their first collaboration with producer Michael Zager, and by early 1980, the single, “Working My Way Back to You,” was topping Pop and R&B charts giving the group its 12th gold record. The Love Trippin’ album’s release included “The Cupid Medley,” one of the fastest selling records in The Spinners’ career. The follow-up album, Labor of Love, featured such stand-out tunes as “Yesterday Once More,” and “Long Live Soul Music.” With the release of “Can’t Shake This Feeling,” their fourth LP in just over two years, the quintet entered a brand new phase of their remarkable career as they joined the award-winning producing/ writing/ playing team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. Other past releases include songs on the motion picture soundtracks of “Twins” and “Spaceballs,” and a single on Arista Records with Dionne Warwick entitled “Then Came You.” The Spinners have six Grammy nominations and have performed twice during the awards ceremony. Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, they have also been awarded the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Award for their contribution to the genre. The group has performed for presidents, received a star on the Hollywood “Walk of Fame,” and has appeared in numerous network and cable television specials paying tribute to the music of the 70’s. In September 2011, 57 years after forming in Detroit and 50 years after “That's What Girls Are Made For", the group was announced as one of 15 final nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, their first nomination. Today, this legendary R & B group maintains an active touring schedule, performing for fans of all ages in sold out houses around the world.

Keith Lockhart Conductor
N
ow in his 25th season as Boston Pops Conductor, Keith Lockhart is the second longest-tenured conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since its founding in 1885. He took over as conductor in 1995, following John Williams’s 13-year tenure from 1980 to 1993; Mr. Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler, who was at the helm of the orchestra for nearly 50 years.
Keith Lockhart, who occupies the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair, has conducted more than 2,000 Boston Pops concerts, most of which have taken place during the orchestra’s spring and holiday seasons in Boston’s historic Symphony Hall. He has also led annual Boston Pops appearances at Tanglewood, 45 national tours to more than 150 cities in 38 states, and 4 international tours to Japan and Korea. The annual July 4 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular draws a live audience of over half a million to the Charles River Esplanade, and millions more view it on television or live webcast. In 2017 the Pops organization presented its first self-produced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. Mr. Lockhart has led eight albums on the RCA Victor/BMG Classics label, including two—The Celtic Album and The Latin Album—that earned Grammy nominations. Recent releases on Boston Pops Recordings include The Red Sox Album, A Boston Pops Christmas—Live from Symphony Hall, and The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers, which was a Boston Pops commission premiered in 2010 during the orchestra’s 125th season. Released at the beginning of the 2017 Pops season, Lights, Camera...Music! Six Decades of John Williams features Keith Lockhart leading the Boston Pops in a collection of Williams compositions from the 1960s onward, some of which can be considered rarities.
10 12
Keith Lockhart’s increased focus on musical theater has attracted leading Broadway artists to the Pops stage. He has worked closely with hundreds of talented young musicians, including Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center, college students from the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, and area high school students. He introduced the PopSearch talent competition and the innovative JazzFest and EdgeFest series, featuring prominent jazz and indie artists performing with the Pops. During his eight-year tenure as principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra, Keith Lockhart led the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II. He is now the orchestra's chief guest conductor. He is also artistic director of the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival. Prior to his BBC appointment, he spent eleven years as music director of the Utah Symphony, which he led at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America, as well as many prestigious orchestras in Asia and Europe. Before coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Keith Lockhart began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of seven. He holds degrees from Furman University and Carnegie Mellon University, and honorary doctorates from several American universities. Visit keithlockhart.com for further information.

ABOUT THE BOSTON POPS
I
n spring 2019 the Boston Pops, affectionately called “America’s Orchestra,” enters its 134th season of entertaining audiences in Boston and beyond, and Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart begins his 25th year at the helm of the orchestra. In 1881 Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, calling its establishment “the dream of my life.” From the start he intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his musicians. In May 1885—a little more than a month before the inaugural “Promenade Concert”—German-born conductor Adolf Neuendorff, under the aegis of the BSO, conducted a series of “Popular Concerts” in the Boston Music Hall, where the audience sat in typical concert seating and no refreshments were served. On July 11, 1885, Neuendorff—who became the first conductor of the Pops, before that name was officially adopted—led the first official “Promenade Concert,” distinguished from “Popular Concerts” by virtue of seating (tables and chairs instead of auditorium-style rows), program format (three parts divided by two intermissions, during which patrons could promenade around the concert hall), and the availability of food and beverages. For the rest of the 19th century, although formally called “Promenade Concerts,” they continued to be referred to informally as “Popular,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name officially adopted in 1900. The following year the orchestra performed for the first time in its new home, Symphony Hall. There were seventeen Pops conductors—beginning with the aforementioned Adolf Neuendorff—who preceded the legendary Arthur Fiedler (1930-1979). The first American-born musician to lead the orchestra, he established the Boston Pops as a national icon. When John Williams (1980-1993) succeeded Fiedler in 1980, he was the most highly acclaimed composer in Hollywood, and today, with 51 Academy Award nominations, he is the most-nominated living person in Academy history. With the Pops, Mr. Williams made a series of best-selling recordings, broadened and updated the Pops repertoire, and entertained audiences with live orchestral accompaniment to film clips of memorable movie scenes, many of which featured iconic music from his own scores. Having led more than 2,000 Boston Pops concerts in the past 24 years, Keith Lockhart (1995-present) has created programs that reach out to a broader and younger audience by presenting artists from virtually every corner of the entertainment world, all the while maintaining the Pops’ appeal to its core audience. He has made 80 television shows, led 45 national and four overseas tours with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, led the Pops at several high-profile sports events, and recorded 14 albums. Mr. Lockhart’s tenure has been marked by a dramatic increase in touring, the orchestra’s first Grammy nominations, the first major network national broadcast of the Fourth of July spectacular from the Esplanade, and the release of the Boston Pops’ first self-produced and self-distributed recordings. In 2017 the Pops opened a new page in its history, as the Pops organization presented its first selfproduced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. 14

N
antucket’s new community hospital, the first new medical facility on the island in more than 60
years, opened for patient care on February 20, 2019. Our new hospital enhances access, safety and privacy for patients, allowing us to better serve the island community with a broad range of medical services. We are proud that Nantucket sets a national standard for small community hospitals by offering expanded outpatient services with capacity for inpatient care and surgery, giving patients a central location for all their healthcare needs, including primary, emergency, and specialty care, as well as diagnostic testing. Thanks to an unprecedented $120 million capital campaign, the largest in Nantucket history, the new hospital was built entirely through private donations, debt-free, and with no taxpayer dollars.

Our New Chemotherapy & Infusion Suite If you’re a cancer patient who calls Nantucket home, even for just a few weeks during the year, you’ll be both amazed and comforted by the new Cancer Care and Infusion Center at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Developed in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital and led by Medical Director Jon Dubois, MD, our program brings a team of cancer specialists to the island on a weekly basis for patient treatment and consultation. This allows our patients to receive much of their care, including chemotherapy treatments, right here on Nantucket. The new hospital features five infusion bays where patients receive care in comfort and privacy.

Our New Physician Practices Patients now have one-stop-shopping for their doctor visits, as we have co-located most of our primary care doctors and many of our specialty physicians under one roof. This gives patients more convenient access to the island’s medical providers while enhancing collaboration among the medical staff and the continuity of care between primary and specialty providers.

Our New Inpatient Rooms The inpatient rooms now provide patients with a spacious, private, and comfortable setting that is full of natural light, conducive to healing, and overlook the nearby conservation land. Situated adjacent to key clinical and diagnostic departments, the new inpatient rooms also have direct access to a family center to facilitate social network support, as well as participation in the process of patient care. An upgraded and expanded physical therapy gym on the inpatient floor provides greater opportunities for recovery, allowing patients to heal close to home after major surgeries or other medical ailments.

Our New Birthplace With an all-time record number of babies born at Nantucket Cottage Hospital in recent years, the growth of the island community underscores the need for a first-class maternity unit. Overlooking a serenity garden, the new iteration of The Birthplace includes three labor and delivery rooms, a labor/exam room, a post-partum room, an expanded jacuzzi tub for laboring mothers, and a state-of-the-art nursery. A stunning skylight and a view of the historic Old Mill are included in the maternity unit to welcome the next generation of Nantucket Natives.

Thank you to Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Blue Coat Volunteers! GIVING TIME, ENERGY, AND COMPASSION TO OUR PATIENTS Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Blue Coats are often the first people you see when you enter the hospital. We know how the sight of their familiar faces reassures anxious patients and loved ones. These volunteers meet and greet Emergency Department visitors, guide people through the hospital, register patients for surgery and support our administrative staff. We thank them for making a meaningful impact on the success of our hospital and the delivery of quality patient care, 30 miles at sea!
