I

n June 1962, the University of Alberta announced a new undergraduate program leading to the award of a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Leadership, a four-year professional program in the School of Physical Education beginning in the 1962-1963 academic year. This was the first program of professional preparation for the management of public and not-for-profit recreation facilities and services offered at a Canadian university, although it was preceded in 1960 by a specialization in Recreation within the Baccalaureate degree program in Physical Education at the University of British Columbia. Alas, the latter has not survived, being discontinued more than two decades ago. Thus, the University of Alberta program remains the oldest continuing academic degree program in recreation and leisure studies in the country. It completed its 50th year of operation during the 20112012 academic year.

While leisure has been a subject of philosophical inquiry, religious debate, and social commentary in the Western intellectual tradition for more than two millennia, the formal study of leisure and recreation has existed as a discrete field of scholarly inquiry in North America for barely 60 years. Two important strands emerged during the late 1950s. The sustained post-war economic growth of the 1950s fostered mounting demands for public recreation facilities, parks and programs in cities, town and villages across Canada and the United States. This, in turn, led to calls for academic programs of professional preparation for managers of recreation facilities and services. At the same time, a massive impetus was given to academic inquiry into leisure and recreation by the work of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission (ORRRC) created by the U.S. Congress in 1958 to study the outdoor recreation needs of the nation. The Commission’s 27-volume report, released in 1962, was the catalyst for a remarkable surge in recreation, leisure and parks research during the next two decades.

Today, the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programs in the recreation and leisure studies field. More than 2,000 people have

graduated with the Bachelor’s degree since 1966, while the numbers that have completed M.A. and Ph.D. degrees (which have been available for only about 25 and 15 years respectively) will soon reach 100. The Faculty is a major contributor to research in the field.

It has also been a leader in developing the institutions and organizations that enable research and study to flourish. The University of Alberta is the only academic institution to host the triennial Canadian Congress on Leisure Research twice. It also shares - with the University of Waterloo - the distinction of having provided two of only seven Presidents of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies, a national academic society founded at the Third Canadian Congress on Leisure Research held at the University of Alberta in 1981. The Faculty also hosted the first World Congress on Leisure Research in 1988. And among the academic staff of the Faculty engaged in recreation and leisure research are three Fellows of the prestigious Academy of Leisure Sciences.

Achievements such as these are worthy of recognition - and Friday, September 21, 2012 has been set aside as a day of celebration to commemorate what has been achieved and to reflect on new challenges and directions. The program for the day will enable us to ponder on the legacy of the past 50 years while also considering new issues and concerns that cry out for our attention: the loss of unstructured play in the lives of our children; the epidemic of childhood and adult obesity brought about in an increasingly sedentary society; the deleterious impacts of some kinds of leisure and recreation behaviour on our natural and heritage resources, especially our parks and diminishing wilderness areas; the implications for leisure behaviour of an increasingly digital society; and much more.

The 50th anniversary of the inauguration of a Bachelor’s degree in recreation and leisure studies is worthy of great celebration. But it is also a time for renewal, an occasion to examine and focus our attention on the new issues, problems and opportunities that face our field as we move further into the 21st century. Please join us and help us to celebrate our past as we set about confronting our future.

KEYN OTE SPEA KER Carl Honoré is an award-winning journalist and author from Edmonton. The Wall Street Journal hailed him as “an in-demand spokesman on slowness.”

After graduating from Edinburgh University with a degree in Modern History and Italian, he spent time working with street children in Brazil. He has covered Europe and South America for the Economist, Observer, Guardian, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, Time Magazine, and the National Post.

His first book, In Praise of Slow, examines our compulsion to hurry and chronicles a global trend toward putting on the brakes. The Financial Times said it was “to the Slow Movement what Das Kapital is to communism.” His second book, Under Pressure, explores the good, the bad and the ugly of modern childrearing. His books have been translated into more than 30 languages and landed on bestseller lists in many countries, including Canada.

In Praise of Slow was both a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week and the inaugural choice for the new Huffington Post Book Club. Under Pressure was shortlisted for the Writers’ Trust Award, the top prize for non-fiction in Canada.

Newsweek described Carl as “an international spokesman for the concept of leisure.” ABC TV News called him “the unofficial godfather of a growing cultural shift toward slowing down.” Huffington Post labelled him “the godfather of the Slow movement.” The Financial Times featured him as a Guru of the Week.

Carl lives in London with his wife, who is also a writer, and their two children.

John Barry. During a 34-year career John Barry (BPE, MA) served as assistant dean, director of operations, coached the varsity wrestling program, taught classes, and acted as the assistant athletic director in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. He was instrumental in the development of facilities including Foote Field and the Saville Community Sports Centre. John is working on the $58 million Physical Activity and Wellness Centre as capital project coordinator. John was inducted into the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003 and the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame in 2009.

Dr. Thomas L. (Tim) Burton holds BSc and PhD degrees in economics from the University of London. He qualified as a professional planner in 1980. He was professor of recreation and sport management at the University of Alberta from 1976 to 1997. He is the author or editor of 10 books in recreation, planning, and environmental policy. Since retirement in 2000, he has volunteered with the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (12 years) and the Community Planning Association of Alberta (seven years). In 2005, he received the Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta.

Dr. Karen M. Fox. Dr. Fox’s research re-thinks theories about leisures from various standpoints including Indigenous, yogic and Buddhist, and marginalized perspectives such as heavy metal, urban Aboriginal hip hop cultures as well as a reflexive, auto-ethnographic engagement with leisures. She is particularly interested in ways to decentre dominant conceptions and understandings of leisure and frameworks that conceive of self as mindbody-soul in compassionate relationship with self and the world. Her publications reflect a deep commitment to collaborative and participatory research/authorship with scholars, students, and community members.

Dr. Elizabeth Halpenny has a PhD in Recreation and Leisure Studies (Unv. of Waterloo), a MES in Environmental Studies (York Unv.), and a BA in Geography (Wilfrid Laurier Unv.). She currently teaches and conducts research in the areas of tourism, marketing, and protected areas management. Elizabeth’s research focuses on individual’s interactions with nature environments, sense of place, and environmental stewardship.

Current research projects include: a) nature-based volunteerism, b) the affect of mobile digital technologies on tourists’ visitation experiences, c) individual’s attitudes towards and use of natural areas, and d) the relationship between World Heritage designation and tourism development.

Kay Kenny is the recreation superintendent for the City of Red Deer facilitating leisure opportunities in Central Alberta. She provides provincial leadership through her role as chair of the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, Kay holds a BA in recreation education from the University of British Columbia and has over 30 years’ experience in municipal recreation environments. She is an active member of ARPA, having served in a number of key administrative roles, including as president.

Kari Medd is the president of the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association. A University of Alberta alumna, Kari holds a BA in Recreation and Leisure Studies (2000) with a focus in special populations. She began her career as a recreation therapist at Alberta Hospital Edmonton in the Adult Psychiatry Acute Assessment and Treatment program. For the past five years she has been part of the Forensic Psychiatry Rehabilitation treatment team. Kari has enjoyed the opportunity to supervise several student practicum placements over the years.

David Mitsui is the practicum supervisor/instructor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation; he has placed and supervised upward of 4,000 undergraduate students in recreation, physical education, and kinesiology over his career. He holds a BA (honours) in co-operative education recreation and leisure studies and business administration from the University of Waterloo, and an MA in recreation from the University of Alberta. David received ARPA’s Merit Award in 2001and the 2006 Citation of Outstanding Achievement Award. He also chaired the national Everybody Gets to Play initiative which received an International Innovation Award at the World Leisure Congress in 2009.

Dr. Kerry Mummery is Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. A renowned scholar in the area of physical activity and population health, Kerry spent 13 years in Australia, most recently as professor and acting pro-vice chancellor, and executive dean of the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton. He has authored over 200 journal publications and presentations to scientific audiences globally; he is a leading architect of Australia’s 10,000 Steps program. And is a Fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation, and an expert voice for Sport Medicine Australia.

Dr. Guy Swinnerton is Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation and is a former Chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies.

He has over forty years of academic and professional involvement with parks and protected areas. In 2007 he received the Canadian Council on Ecological Areas’ Gold Leaf Award.

Dr. Gordon Walker is Full Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta. His research program: (1) integrates social, environmental, and cross-cultural psychology into leisure theory, and (2) examines how leisure behaviour (e.g., motivations for, constraints to, experiences during, and outcomes of, leisure) is similar and different across ethnic and cultural groups. Gordon has received over $1 million in research grants; published numerous research articles and book chapters; and is a co-author of the second edition of A Social Psychology of Leisure. In 2009 he was elected as a Fellow to the Academy of Leisure Sciences.

Bill Werry is deputy minister of Alberta Aboriginal Relations. Over the course of a 30-year career he has also served as deputy minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation, as well as assistant deputy minister for Parks, Conservation, Recreation and Sport Division in Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture. He also served as the executive director of Resource Consultation and Traditional Use in the Department of Alberta Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. He holds a BA in recreation administration from the University of Alberta and an MSc in physical activity studies from the University of Regina.

PR EFACE I have been engaged in the recreation and parks field in one way or another for my entire working life, beginning when I entered a Ph.D. program at the University of London (England) in 1963 – just one year after the launch of the undergraduate degree program in recreation leadership at the University of Alberta! The subject of my Ph.D. dissertation (completed in 1967) was Economic Aspects of Selected Outdoor Recreation Enterprises in Rural Britain. It was undertaken in land economics, there being no recreation and parks degree programs in England at that time.

I moved to Canada in 1970 and to Alberta in 1976 where I took an academic position in the Department of Recreation Administration within the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta. My specific mandate upon arrival was to develop a research-based graduate degree program that would build upon the established undergraduate program. During the following 21 years, I served as Graduate Program Chair (3 years), Department Chair (10 years) and Associate Dean of the Faculty (4 years) before taking early retirement for personal reasons in 1997. Since 2000, I have been actively engaged in the field of recreation and parks practice - as a volunteer with the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association, the organization that represents municipal recreation and parks agencies in the Province, where I served three consecutive two-year terms as Vice-President, President, and Past President.

What this brief résumé illustrates is that the short history outlined here is not just a product of intensive study of University, Faculty and Department archives and current documents.

It is also founded upon my personal recollections of the events, scholars and practitioners involved. I feel privileged to have been a part of the story.

BAC H ELO R ’ S DEGR EE PR OGRAMS OV ERVIEW The story of the undergraduate degree program in recreation and leisure studies at the University of Alberta - the oldest continuing undergraduate program in the field in Canada - reflects the constant ebb and flow of relations between practitioners in municipal recreation and parks management and the academics who design and deliver undergraduate recreation education. The program’s origins are to be found in the efforts of practitioners in the emerging municipal recreation and parks field to obtain a program of study in Alberta geared specifically to the preparation of future practitioners. While professional preparation became (and has remained) an important objective for the educators who deliver the program, the latter have also had an enduring interest in the concept of leisure and its evolving place in a post-industrial (and increasingly digital) world. Maintaining a judicious balance between professional preparation and academic inquiry has been a central concern of the program throughout its 50-year history.

The second date for each program indicates the year in which new student enrolments ceased. Students already enrolled in the previous program could opt to complete it or transfer to the new program, usually without loss of credits.

Each of these iterations reveals or reflects changes in one or more of six variables: the availability of financial and human (academic) resources; the total numbers of credits required to complete the degree program; specified mandatory or required courses; areas of concentration or specialization within the program; professional fieldwork and practicum requirements; and the establishment - and later dissolution - of academic Departments within the Faculty.

By the advent of the 1950s Alberta’s economy had reverted from its wartime disposition to a peacetime character, just in time to reap the benefits of a decade of uninterrupted economic growth fuelled, at least in part, by the first of Alberta’s modern-day oil booms. The Leduc No. 1 oil well blew in on February 13, 1947, following years of unsuccessful exploration activities. (Imperial Oil alone had spent millions of dollars drilling 133 dry wells in the preceding years!)

The sustained economic growth of the 1950s saw mounting demands for public recreation facilities, parks and programs in Alberta’s cities, town and villages. Prior to these years, municipal governments had played very limited roles in the provision of public recreation and parks facilities and programs, usually in response to - and in support of - the efforts and activities of not-for-profit organizations. Beginning in the 1950s, they began, aggressively, to develop and manage their own facilities, parks and programs employing their own staff to do so. The B.A. (Recreation Leadership) program responded to a need articulated by these pioneer staffs for qualified personnel to manage and deliver rapidly increasing numbers of recreation and parks programs and services in Alberta’s municipalities.

The degree program structure was relatively simple, with courses drawn from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and physical education. There were three required Recreation courses, equivalent to five single-term courses: Principles of Recreation, Recreation Administration, and Institutional Recreation. There were also a few other recreation-related courses: Community Organization, Camp Counselling, and a two-week Outdoor School. For the most part, however, the recreation aspects of the program were drawn from Physical Education, Art and Drama courses. The program had a strong liberal arts foundation, reflected in its requirement of a minimum of 26 Arts and Science courses (78 credits).

There were no graduates with a B.A. in Recreation Leadership. It is clear from a document entitled Annual Report of the Recreation Administration (Professional Program) 1965-1966 that the name of the degree was changed within the first two or three years of its operation. Graduates were to receive a B.A. in Recreation Administration. The composition of the program, however, did not appear to undergo major re-structuring until 1968.

A complete program review was carried out at the end of the decade, resulting in a decision to restrict enrolments (by means of a quota) in a revised program. Perhaps the most significant changes were the reduction of total requirements to 132 credits and expansion of the patterns of concentration from five to nine reflecting more and greater opportunities for specialization.

On paper, the changes to the program were small: the 3-credit Fieldwork course, two required Activity courses (6 credits), and two approved options (6 credits) were removed from the program, freeing up 15 credits to be used for the Practicum and accompanying Practicum Seminar. But the changes were important in character, giving a radically more visible emphasis to professional preparation.

BAC H ELO R ’ S DEGR EE PR OGRAMS Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Administration [Version 5] Severe funding cuts to the University in the early 1990s led to the dissolution of academic departments and the adoption of a flat administrative structure in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. This, in turn, led to another revision of the B.A. program. In an environment of financial exigency, the need to eliminate redundancy in course offerings was critical. So, too, was the pressure to identify and implement opportunities to combine courses across degree programs, specifically between those in Physical Education and Recreation Administration. It was also decided to bring the total program requirements for the degree into line with other Bachelor’s degree programs at the University: 120 credits for a four-year degree. Finally, there was a detailed examination of the need for and viability of the nine patterns of concentration within the degree, leading to major changes in these.

The increased focus of the degree program on professional preparation was given a boost in this revision. The program still contained liberal arts courses, but there was no longer an explicit recognition of the program’s liberal arts foundation and no minimum requirement of Arts and Science courses. As well, the reduction in the numbers of patterns of concentration (to three plus an Individual Program) suggested a renewed focus on broadly-based (rather than narrow) areas of knowledge and competence in the field of practice similar to that which had been emphasized in the five areas of concentration offered 20 years earlier in the 1975-76 program (Version 2).

The 1995-96 revisions to the program were an immediate response to sudden and severe financial restrictions.

But they also reflected turbulence in the Alberta economy and society that continued through the decade.

The digital revolution accelerated throughout the 1990s, raising questions about the ways in which many established sectors of society and the economy functioned. Current models of education, at all levels, were increasingly challenged in a developing Information Age. New ideas about knowledge and learning were percolating vigorously.

Public recreation administration fell on hard times as financially strapped municipal recreation departments and agencies cut both staff and services. Put simply, public recreation was seen by very few students as a viable career path. In response, a revised undergraduate program attempted to re-position itself by focusing attention on the broader concept of leisure and its place within a society in the throes of fundamental change.

While the connection to professional practice in municipal recreation and parks remained, emphasis was increasingly placed on other career paths as well - notably those in sport and tourism.

In its final form, the revised program introduced in 2000-2001 was not greatly different from the one that had been put in place in 1995-96. But the change in the name of the degree from recreation administration to recreation and leisure studies was both symbolic and vitally important, an acknowledgment that the program needed to be about much more than the preparation of students for careers in public recreation and parks management.

There was also concern about the soft demand for the program that had continued from the 1990s. In contrast, there seemed to be considerable interest from students in obtaining access to sport and tourism course offerings within other Faculty degree programs that they could combine with courses from recreation and leisure studies to develop personalized programs. This led to the most recent revision of the degree program, designed to include a core focus on leisure while, at the same time, drawing attention to its many manifestations through recreation, sport and tourism environments and practices.

ADVANCED PROJECT OPTION An opportunity for advanced scholarly development as a substitute for the Practicum Placement and Seminar

This (the current) version of the degree program gives explicit recognition to the importance of the liberal arts foundation on which the original program was built 50 years ago. It has retained a strong connection to the professional field of practice through the Practicum Placement and core Faculty courses. But, at the same time, it continues to position the study of leisure as being about more than just a preparation for careers in public recreation and parks administration - a position central to the previous program revision in 2000-2001.

It makes no attempt to prescribe areas of professional concentration but, instead, permits students to develop self-selected focus areas through both In-Faculty and Out-of-Faculty Options courses. It also allows individual students to choose an Advanced Project Option as a substitute for the Professional Practicum, thereby ensuring a place in the program for those whose interests may be scholarly rather than professional.

MA ST E R ’S DEGR EE PR O GR AMS OV ERVIEW A proposal for a Master of Arts degree in Recreation Administration was submitted by the Department to the Program Subcommittee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in September 1975. Acting on the advice of an Ad Hoc Committee created to consider the submission, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research rejected the proposal. In doing so, it offered three principal suggestions: •

That the Department develop an improved research capability and experience;

•

That it enter into arrangements with one or more related Departments to provide its academic staff with opportunities to teach graduate courses and to participate in the supervision of graduate theses; and

•

That, on the basis of these proposed activities, a new proposal should be submitted a few years later.

The recommendations of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research were vigorously pursued over the next several years. The Department dramatically enhanced its research and graduate program activities in four principal ways: •

Through the addition of new academic staff with considerable research and graduate advising experience (three new staff members with research and supervisory experience were added in the two years following rejection of the 1975 submission);

•

Through increased research activity on the part of the already existing academic staff of the Department;

•

Through the participation of Department academic staff in advisory and supervisory graduate program activities in related departments, notably in Physical Education, Education Administration, Geography, Sociology, and the Division of Community Development; and

•

By the development, in cooperation with the Department of Physical Education, of a specialization in Recreation Administration within the Master’s degree program in Physical Education. Developed during the 1977-78 academic year, this specialization enrolled its first student in September 1978.

With these activities under its belt, the Department submitted a new proposal for a separate Master of Arts degree in Recreation early in 1980. This was approved a year later, with the first student being admitted in September 1981.

The Faculty’s adoption of a flat administrative structure in 1994 led to a re-examination of its graduate degree programs over the subsequent year, and resulted in the adoption in 1996 of two forms for a Master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies – thesis-based and by coursework. A decision was also taken at about the same time to offer the opportunity for qualified students to undertake Doctoral study in the recreation and leisure studies field.

The Specialization in Recreation Administration within the Master of Arts in Physical Education program that began in September 1978 required both extensive coursework and the completion of a research thesis.

Students had to meet all of the basic requirements for completion of a Master’s degree in Physical Education, including a mandatory course on the Nature of Scientific Inquiry in Physical Education (counted as a Recreation course for purposes of meeting program requirements). However, mandatory and approved graduate courses in recreation (with a Recreation prefix) were substituted for physical education courses. In addition, students were required to complete a mandatory course in the Principles and Practices of Public Recreation Administration.

Four graduate courses in Recreation (not including Directed Study courses) were offered as part of this program: •

It continued - and, indeed, enhanced - the thrust begun with the original Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Leadership program 16 years earlier and pursued through the (then) current version of the Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Administration program.

The new program had two principal objectives: to develop an understanding of the broad field of recreation, with particular attention to theoretical constructs and philosophical concepts; and to examine basic theories of policy making, the principles of planning, and the theoretical bases and general practices of the administration of public recreation services in Canada.

Students were required to complete a minimum of 8 courses, at least 5 of which had to be in Recreation.

The remaining 3 courses could be taken from among any approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. There were three required Recreation courses: •

When the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation adopted a flat administrative structure in 1994, graduate programs became Faculty rather than Department offerings. A Master’s degree program by coursework had existed in the former Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Following a review, the Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies was introduced to replace the Master of Arts in Recreation, and was made available in two versions: thesis-based and by coursework only. Both programs are current offerings. The former is described here.

The minimum requirements for the thesis-based Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies are the completion of 4 courses and a thesis. Two courses are mandatory: Concepts and Theories of Leisure and Recreation; and a graduate research course (PERLS 581 - Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Research Methodology - recommended). There is a residence requirement of two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta. As well, students must complete an ethics and integrity training requirement of eight hours.

What is evident from these requirements is the absence of a dominant focus on public recreation and parks practice. The thesis-based program gives primary attention to academic inquiry in leisure and recreation, through the mandatory course on concepts and theories and the required completion of a research thesis. The roles of public sector organizations in the field continue to be addressed in available courses but are no longer overriding. Put simply, the thesis-based Master’s degree program has a research emphasis that permits – and, indeed, requires – independent academic inquiry beyond the kind of learning that comes from coursework alone.

MA ST E R ’S DEGR EE PR O GR AMS Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies [By Coursework] As noted earlier, the Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies introduced to replace the Master of Arts in Recreation was made available in two versions: thesis-based and by coursework only. Both are current offerings.

The coursework version outlined here is primarily focused on advanced learning through the completion of specific substantive courses. It is, perhaps, more likely to be attractive to recreation and parks practitioners since it has no residence requirement. It also has no research requirement, although students have the option of completing a research project as part of the program. A research project is generally of lesser quality and stature than a research thesis and is often problem-oriented. Though not limited explicitly to issues of professional practice, a student clearly has the opportunity to orient the program in this direction.

The minimum requirements for the Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies by coursework are the completion of 8 courses, plus a capping exercise in the form of either a completed research project or a comprehensive examination. Two courses are mandatory: Concepts and Theories of Leisure and Recreation; and a graduate level research course (PERLS 581 - Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Research Methodology - recommended). The intent of the latter is to provide the student with an understanding of - and an appreciation for - the nature and characteristics of research and the research process, regardless of whether or not he or she opts to carry out a research project as part of the program.

D O C TO R A L DEGREE PR O GR AM Ph.D. (Recreation and Leisure Studies) The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is a research degree, although specific graduate-level courses in recreation and leisure studies may also be required as part of a student’s program of study. Course requirements will be determined on an individual basis according to need and must be approved by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. Notwithstanding this, the emphasis of the degree is on the conduct of original research leading to a dissertation and not on specified course requirements. In addition, all students must complete an ethics and integrity training requirement of at least 8 hours.

The minimum period of residence for the degree program is two academic years of full-time study. Normally, a minimum of three years of full-time study is required to complete the program. The maximum time allowed for completion is six years from the date of first registration.

A CAU SE FO R CELEBRATI O N CO MMENTA RY These are NOT official lists of the kind prepared twice annually for the University of Alberta’s Spring and Fall Convocations. They are both more modest and more ambitious: more modest because they do not attempt to provide full legal names of graduates as is done at Convocation; more ambitious because, collectively, they are an attempt to bring together in one place the names of all persons who have graduated from academic programs in Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Alberta during the 50 years from the initiation of the Bachelor’s degree program in 1962-1963 until the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. The names of the graduates are presented according to each degree program and each graduating year. The latter includes both the Spring and Fall Convocations in the specified calendar year, not the academic year.

The lists have been prepared as part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Leadership at the University of Alberta the oldest continuing degree program in recreation and leisure studies in Canada - and the academic, professional and research legacy that it has spawned.

Compilation of the lists has required detailed examination of multiple, diverse and archival sources. Great effort has been taken to include all who graduated from the various programs during the past 50 years. This has not been an easy task: graduates of M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, in particular, have sometimes been difficult to verify since specializations within degrees are not always evident. As well, some sources give maiden names of female graduates who have married while others give married names. Ideally, we would have liked to show names as they appear on degree certificates but this has not always been possible. On behalf of the Recreation and Leisure Studies 50th Anniversary Committee, then, I offer sincere apologies to any graduate whose name has been inadvertently omitted from the list or has been entered incorrectly.

While the lists have been prepared and printed for a one-time event - the 50th anniversary of recreation and leisure studies at the University - the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation proposes to maintain them in an electronic form and to update them annually.

There are undoubtedly errors in the lists included here. Not that we are missing large numbers of graduates – probably only a few. But there are slight discrepancies in numbers based on counts of individuals and tables of degrees awarded during the years from 1993 through 2010. As well, there are likely numerous errors in names and spellings. The Faculty would be grateful, therefore, for any information that will help make the lists more accurate. Indeed, in only two of the 47 years (1971 and 1974) did the numbers of male graduates exceed the numbers of women graduates, while in two other years, 1966 and 1979, the numbers were equal.
