Nobody lives in North Florida or South Georgia because they have to. Nobody has to stay here because they owe money to the company store. So why is it that our civic leaders, elected and otherwise, can’t figure out that’s the frame of reference they should be using for every decision? Is it right that we’re the largest land-mass city in the continental US and have nine miles of bike paths? And only one dedicated trail for cycling, running, etc.? Recreation and sports are the life-blood of the people who live here. Jobs are tough to come by, and the ones that are here aren’t, on average, the highest paying in comparison to other cities. So people are here because they want to be and their off-the-job activities are important to them. Yet it seems it’s the last thing on the agenda when it comes to spending money on the quality of life here. You name it, ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE ACTIVE 99
there’s not enough of them here. Tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, soccer pitches, lacrosse fields, etc. Many times it’s left up to the private developers to set aside land for recreation somewhere within the confines of the community. Why? Because it’s a selling point. Our part of the country is attractive because of the lifestyle. Everybody does something. Run, bike, swim, sail, play golf, tennis, paddle board, everybody’s got something they do. So it ought to be a priority, along with public education and transportation to keep parks open, to keep building fields where kids and adults can play and to create programs to entice people to get involved. I know there are private, not-for-profit organizations like the Mal Washington Foundation and the First Tee that identify and help kids stay out of trouble and learn life skills through sports. But if you just wanted to go throw the football with friends would you know where to go? Do you know where the nearest basketball court is where you can find a pickup game? Would you rollerblade on your street? Where would you go to ride your bike? Take a walk? Where we live is our greatest asset. Let’s figure out how to use it. New Girl in Town!
Olivia Munn is TV’s hottest new sensation and in my opinion, this female is only tasting the beginning of her career. Of Chinese, German, and Irish descent – Olivia has landed herself at the No. 2 spot of Maxim’s Hot 100 list. She’s raced up the charts very quickly considering she just entered in 2009 at the bottom of the totem pole at No. 99. In 2010, she skyrocketed to No. 8. She is a correspondent on The Daily Show and graces prime time TV on the NBC sitcom Perfect Couples. The new “it girl” has also found herself being linked to some of the most-wanted males. No confirmations on where her heart lies however. At the Maxim Hot 100 Party, Olivia was cozying beside Joe Jonas. Joe just broke off his relationship with actress, Ashley Greene, in the spring. The two do compliment each other quite well but Olivia was also just seen holding hands with Glee star, Matthew Morrison. Maybe I can get a confirmed answer from Matthew on the terms of their relationship when he graces Jacksonville’s Times-Union Center in July. For all the gentlemen who would like to believe she’s happily single and ready to mingle, be sure to pick up her second cover feature of Maxim.
Happy Twins, Maybe #3, and Numero Uno!
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have two more to care for in their household. Mariah gave birth to the twins; her rep commented to CNN, “It has been a long, emotional journey for this family, and I couldn’t be happier for all of them.” The twins do have reasoning to their names from 22 ACTIVE
the happy new parents. Moroccan Scott Cannon was named after the room that Nick proposed to Mariah in. The top level of Mariah’s Manhattan apartment is called the Moroccan Room – for it is filled with Moroccan-inspired décor. Scott is Nick’s grandmother’s maiden name as well as his middle name. Monroe Cannon was named after female icon, Marilyn Monroe, who was an inspiration to Mariah. Monroe does not have a middle name because Mariah actually doesn’t have one herself. Not so thrilled to be expecting a birth could be actor, Ryan Philippe! But it is not from his current on and off again flame, Amanda Seyfried. Model/actress, Alexis Knapp, who dated Ryan at the end of last year is pregnant and has told friends that Ryan is the father. An insider close to Ryan told People Magazine that, “Ryan is aware of the situation and totally prepared to take responsibility should the child be his.” This would be Ryan’s third child. He has two children with just remarried actress, Reese Witherspoon. There’s a new Bear in Hollywood! Yes, yes, having babies seems to be an hourly trend popping from our celebrities but this happily married couple is so cute that you can’t help but be happy for them. Clueless actress star, Alicia Silverstone, welcomed her first child with husband, Christopher Jarecki. They named their 7 lb, 15 oz baby boy, Bear Blu Jarecki. ACTIVE 23
Forty & Fabulous
Alicia’s film, Clueless, was such a major hit with ladies (Rest in Peace Brittany Murphy). Who remembers Dionne? Stacey Dash! She played 17-year-old Dionne when she was actually already in her late twenties. Stacey has gone through chaos in Hollywood, a rampage of issues from her ex-husband who beat her yet remained to look amazingly beautiful in her nude spread in Playboy. She will be on the new show on VH1 that premieres this month called Single Ladies. But at the age of 44, she is definitely NOT the only lady that has it going on in her forties! Jennifer Lopez is the hottest thing on American Idol, is killing the radio with “On the Floor”, has a set of twins and a voice-blessed husband, and manages to look better than even women half her age at the age of 41! Lucy Liu is getting ready for the big release of Kung Fu Panda 2 and the woman is 42 and looking fierce! And I can’t talk about ladies in their forties looking fabulous without the smile of Julia Roberts. Pretty Woman herself, is 43, and still makes men melt. Last but certainly not least, the woman who nabs the men younger than her with the same haircut she’s had for years, Ms. Jennifer Aniston, who has currently been linked to The Hangover 2’s Bradley Cooper. With a body like hers, it sounds crazy to say she’s 42.
Literally Walking On Men!
Keeping it awkwardly sexy and controversial is the one and only Lady Gaga. She made a great mark on American Idol with her featured episode getting 70 million votes but it wasn’t her mentoring or vote count that kept people talking afterwards. It seems American Idol producers spent quite some time censoring the pop star and it wasn’t just profanity coming from her mouth. The censoring went down, all the way to her feet. Gaga showed up with her crazy-high trademark heels but these however were freakishly different. The heels, by London brand Void of Course featured a clear Lucite heel molded in the shape of a male’s genitalia. Yes – you read that correctly. The explicit shoes run over $4500 a pair. American Idol censored the shoes by placing a logo. Check out this photo of the singer. This is at her senior prom in New York City where she attended the private Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic School. So innocent looking - Crazy eh! 24 ACTIVE

ASK AN ATTORNEY Q: How do I get and keep custody of my child? A: These days both parents often want primary custody of the children.
There are many reasons for this. One is emotional. People just love their kids and want to spend as much time as possible with them. Another is practical. He or she who gets the kids will also get child support checks. Florida doesn’t like to use the term custody and instead refers to the percentage of shared time, decision making and responsibility. Be The Primary Caregiver The primary caregiver, or the person perceived to be the primary caregiver, will be the one who gets the kids for the majority of the time. What is a primary caregiver? It means be the one who cares for the children’s basic needs: education, medical, social, emotional, extracurricular, religious, day-to-day decisions. It doesn’t matter if you work full time outside the home. You can still prove you are the primary caregiver if you have a family history of handling most or all matters pertaining to the care and welfare of the child(ren). Be Emotionally, Mentally, Physically and Emotionally Fit If you consume drugs, alcohol or are in some way mentally, physically or emotionally unable to care for the child(ren) you are jeopardizing your chances of having shared time with the children. The court is going to look at the best interests of the child and give the children to the parent who seems most able to provide. A parent who is impaired cannot possibly be the best choice to handle the decision-making and needs that are in a child’s best interest. Stay healthy. Exercise, eat well, keep psychological and psychiatric issues under control, and avoid abusing alcohol and ingestion of illicit drugs.
26 ACTIVE
Be Cooperative with the Other Parent If you cannot put the interest of the child(ren) above your own need to degrade the other parent, you will probably be accused of alienating the children and in extreme cases you could lose your child(ren). You may hate that other parent, but you have a child(ren) together and YOU have to be the parent that is capable of fostering your child in a healthy parent/child relationship including both parents to your child. Do Not Relocate Without Permission Once your child has legal ties to Florida’s courts, that jurisdiction is responsible for making sure the child is in the best possible environment. Typical parenting plans will require permission from the court before removing a child from the jurisdiction. If you must relocate to another state, you must ask permission from the other parent and (sometimes) from the court. I strongly suggest you get the permission in writing. If you have a parenting plan with the court, you will need to have it reviewed by an attorney because you may be required to update/amend the plan to reflect the new agreement. If you remove the child from his jurisdiction, without permission, this may be viewed as kidnapping and you will be jeopardizing your custody.
Very truly yours,
christy Greene

natural
beauty There are an endless amount of makeup products on the market that hide, highlight, bronze, color, and bring drama to a woman’s face. I believe that with this plethora of options, we sometimes get overwhelmed and just start stock piling them on top of each other. It’s time to simplify things and take the less is more approach. Let your natural beauty show with a few easy adjustments and time saving tricks! 32 ACTIVE
When it comes to natural beauty, and the less is more approach, skincare is key. When your face is flawless, you will no longer have the need for excessive foundation, concealer, and powder applications. All of these products can not only lead to clogged pores, but also an aged appearance. I don’t know about you, but I am NOT trying to look a second older than I am! For healthy glowing skin, all you need to do is add a few face friendly products to your current routine. Exfoliate Exfoliation is key to shedding away dull skin and bringing your healthy glow to the surface. Not only will your skin look and feel refreshed, but it will also help in minimizing any fine lines. Fine lines appear deeper by dead skin cells stacking up on top of each other. Thus making the ‘cavern’ in between those cells more defined. One of my favorite new skin miracles on the market right now are cleansing brushes. Im sure you’ve seen the commercials for the Clairisonic Skin Care brush that runs $150. Well, I'm here to tell you that not only does a cleansing brush work WONDERS, but I've found a cheaper version that’s equally as beneficial. Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System runs for $29.99 and is virtually identical. I did a lot of comparison research and couldn’t be happier with my purchase! Not only does this brush exfoliate away all those pesky dull cells, but it also cleanses your skin 6x better compared to washing with your ACTIVE 33
hands. That means that all of your skincare applied after cleansing with be working 6x better as well! My skin has never looked or felt better! Moisturizer and Eye Cream After your fantastic cleansing experience, you’ll want to follow with a moisturizer and eye cream. This will help to lock in that healthy glow and keep your skin feeling soft and supple throughout the day and night. Sunscreen Make sure that your moisturizer includes an SPF to keep your skin looking its best. 34 ACTIVE
SPF now means less damage later! If you find yourself with some extra time during the week, try to throw in a face mask for added benefit. The varieties of face mask options are endless, and they really do give an extra boost to your skin’s appearance.
If you’ve made your skincare a priority in your routine, I can guarantee that your makeup is going to look noticeably better. Try switching to light-weight foundation (remember the heavier the application, the older our skin appears) and use a fuller coverage concealer for any problem areas. This will leave the overall appearance of your skin light and healthy, but also give you the coverage you desire. Finish with a colored lip balm (find one with SPF to keep your lips protected), a little bronzer, some blush, and a great mascara, and that’s that! You’re naturally beautiful in no time at all!
Until next time -M

girls with curls
Any person with naturally curly hair is going to tell you that they hate it. Known for its dryness, unpredictability and lack of control, curly hair is one of the most difficult to manage hair styles. With that being said 85% of women with straight hair are jealous of women with curly hair. Women with limp, stick straight hair spend hours of their lives using curling irons trying to mimic natural curls. I know this because as a stylist I get asked to teach my clients how 36 ACTIVE
to curl hair rather than straighten it. So here are some tips that may make your curly hair lifestyle a little easier, you might even learn to love your hair.
cut & style
Curly hair should get be cut every four to six weeks. This will not only keep your hair in tip top shape, it will also stop the ends from losing their curl and going straight. Most importantly you need to have a lengthy consultation with your stylist. Curly hair can tend to take on a triangular shape when it has not been cut correctly, and this is a problem that can be very difficult to remedy. Your stylist will need to fully understand curly hair and how your curls will fall. Layering curly hair can make it easier to handle and achieve hair styles. A good stylist will be able to advise you on a haircut and style that will make the most of your curls. They will also tell you the proper way to care for your curly hair.
maintenance
Washing is just as important. But washing your hair everyday will strip the hair of its natural oils, which is the best way to keep your curls healthy. To remove tangles, always use a wide tooth comb. As most of you may know, the only time you actually get to comb your hair is when it's wet. And brushing it is totally out of question. Not only will brushing cause frizz but it will also cause breakage. When using a diffuser, keep your hair dryer on a low setting. Once your curls are dry, run a little pomade into the palm of your hands and smooth over your hair gently

products
Avoid any styling products that contain alcohol or that will weigh the hair down. Use gels and creams that offer light moisture and curl definition when wet. Then let your hair air dry. If you have some extra time use duckbill clips on the crown of your head to lift top curls, or use a diffuser. Use shampoos and conditioners that are full of moisturizers. Curly hair requires extra moisture and this will also help reduce frizz. MOROCCAN OIL CURL DEFINING MOUSSE $19.99; Amazon.com; Taming curls for long lasting soft and natural hold; eliminates frizz.

ACTIVE FITNESS with DAN MASSEY Welcome back everyone! I’m back again this month with six weeks until my next competition. Reminiscing about previous competitions, I’ve never looked better at this stage in the game. This month I am going to take some time to talk about the steps that I have taken to get my body to the next level. Last month, I touched on gyms selection. I spoke of the benefits of my new gym where I have been training. A couple of months ago, I realized that my workouts were becoming dull. What better way to get my body back into gear and spice up my work out than to switch gyms? I decided to set foot to go and find another gym to train at. After doing my homework on finding the perfect gym, I decided on Lifestyle Gym on Atlantic Blvd. and Hodges Blvd. The gym had a perfect combination of large size, good ventilation and various equipment. The cardio section was absolutely ridiculous in the fact that it had three tiers of equipment that ranged from treadmills to stair steppers. I knew that by switching to this gym I would never have to wait another minute to get on a machine. Another major make- or- break point is the gym’s cleanliness. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the cleaning crew and the sparkling locker rooms. The icing on the cake at Lifestyle Gym, is the friendly, helpful staff. They are always ready to 42 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE
help answer any questions. With a no contract membership that only costs $20 a month, I knew I couldn’t go wrong. So, have I sold you on Lifestyle Gym yet? If you are interested in checking out the gym, stop in a talk to Brian. Another big change I made in my daily routine, was getting a new trainer. A few months ago, I met with IFBB pro bodybuilder Don Long, and I was blown away by his professionalism. We hit it off immediately and started training together. He took control of all aspects of my training from my food to the gym floor. Fine by me, less thinking involved and more action is the way I like it! Talk about tough training! For the first few weeks I thought I was training to be a Navy Seal. It has been great to have a real pro look at me and make adjustments as he sees fit for the next level. If Don is a little too much for you, his wife Sara, who is also a figure competitor, might be your speed. They both only take on a few clients at a time because they don’t like to overbook themselves. Don and Sara Long can be reached at (954) 609-1489 for fitness and diet consults. Well guys, that’s all I have for this month. As always, were doing free diet plans for all of you who come out to Jax Sports Nutrition to see us. We’re located between The Fresh Market and Steinmart on Atlantic Blvd. and San Pablo. Until next month, train hard!!

1. PRESERVATIVES • Sodium Nitrite: Mostly found in cured meats such as bacon, turkey, ham, or hot dogs. Its main purpose is to prevent the growth of bacteria that cause Botulism. Sodium Nitrite leads to the formation of nitrosamines in foods, which are carcinogenic. Many Nitrite-containing foods have ascorbic acid added to suppress the formation of nitrosamines. Even so, most products containing sodium Nitrite are not nutritionally good choices since they tend to also be high in sodium, fat, or both. • BHA and BHT: both are antioxidants used in potato chips, oils, or some cereals to delay the rancidity of fats. Some studies suggest they may be carcinogens in the human body.
2. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS • Acesulfame Potassium (Acesulfame-K): used in baked goods, soft drinks, and some “diet” yogurts. There are concerns about it being a potential carcinogen.
ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 45
• Sucralose (Splenda): used in frozen desserts, sugarless baked goods, soft drinks, and sweetener packets. Is made by reacting table sugar (sucrose) with Chlorine. Studies indicate it to be generally safe; however, in the food system it is often used in combination with Acesulfame-K.
3. COLORINGS • Yellow 6, Blue 1, Red 40: Animal tests using Yellow 6 and Blue 1 suggest some cancer risk, while the tests on the health effects of Red 40 are not well-designed. Yellow 6 may also cause allergic reactions in some individuals. All three are often found in junk foods such as candy, sodas, and other sugary beverages.
4. SEASONINGS • High Fructose Corn Syrup: This sweetener is used instead of sugar in many processed foods and sodas. Foods that are high in high fructose corn syrup or sugar tend to contain empty calories and very little of any other nutrients. • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein: Often found as a flavor enhancer in instant soups, chilis or processed meats, this product is obtained when protein from a vegetable source (such as soy) is broken down into its amino acids. A similar product obtained from dairy sources is hydrolyzed whey protein. It may cause reactions in individuals who are sensitive or allergic to the original source.
5. OTHERS • Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils: found mainly in processed baked goods and frozen ready-to-eat entrees. The main health concern associated with partially hydrogenated oils is the formation of trans fats, which adversely affect blood lipids. 46 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE
EASY WAYS TO AVOID THE ADDITIVES Try to prepare your favorite meals eaten in restaurants at home or buy them from the market. When you bake, make multiple batches and freeze the extras. It is much better to supply your own homemade food than rely on the pre-packaged version that can sit for months on the store shelf without going bad. Consume fresh fruits, yogurt, and occasional homemade cookies or dessert. If you really want to provide juice as a drink, buy 100% fruit juice.
