This summer will mark my 30th year of working and living in Jacksonville. Having also worked in Charleston, S.C., going to school in Washington, D.C. and growing up in Baltimore, I’ve had a taste of different city sizes and lifestyles. Baltimore is a city that’s really a big town. In fact, Jacksonville is similar to what Baltimore was 35 years ago -kind of a second city on the East Coast. While Baltimore was never quite DC or New York, Jacksonville isn’t Miami, Tampa or Orlando. And neither town wants to be. Washington is a big city with all of the plusses and minuses that go along with that-great restaurants, lots of culture and traffic (and headaches that go along with it). Charleston is about as deep South as you can get (OK, maybe Savannah) and is, as oft described, indeed “charming.” It’s a big tourist destination now, but it remains a bastion of US Southern culture. I often joke that I bought and owned three tuxedos when I lived in Charleston and wore them constantly. Here in Jacksonville, it’s a rare occasion that “black tie” is required. And that’s just fine. Active 9

Sometimes that bothers people from out of town. Especially among my peers in the reporting community, when I travel they always deride Jacksonville in one-way or another. But we’re pretty comfortable with who we are. Maybe that’s what bothers people. They’re always moaning and complaining about something and can’t quite understand why we like it here. There’s a sign at the Navy base in Norfolk that says “there are other duty stations besides Jax.” Just a small inside joke about our Navy population in North Florida and how they want to stay here instead of being stationed elsewhere. “What brought you here,” is a question I ask people when we meet (since it seems nobody is a native). “The Navy,” is a popular answer from dentists and doctors to constructions workers and engineers. A lot of them were exposed to North Florida and South Georgia by being stationed at Cecil, NAS Jax, Mayport or Kings Bay. Do you know what Rob Meier, Paul Spicer, Mark Brunell, Matt Robinson, Tony Boselli and Lonnie Marts have in common? None are from here; all played in Jacksonville and all decided this would be their “home-town” when they stopped playing football. That’s pretty amazing when you think about it. These guys and dozens of others have played around the league but picked Jacksonville as their postcareer spot. When asked they all say, “The people. The lifestyle. I just like it here. Nobody much bothers you and people just live their lives.” Pretty good testimonial. @WJXT4SamKouvaris @samsportsline www.samsportsline.com Sam Kouvaris has been active in Jacksonville since 1981 as a sports reporter with WJXT Channel 4 News. The Wedding is Off!

Everyone’s favorite Playboy, Hugh Hefner, is going to stay a bachelor after all. Five days before his wedding day to 25-year-old Crystal Harris, she called off the wedding. Hugh tweeted, "The wedding is off. Crystal has had a change of heart." Sources are saying that Crystal ditched the wedding because she wants to focus on launching a music career. Crystal told Ryan Seacrest that the Playboy lifestyle was a life she didn’t want for herself. “Hef’s lifestyle isn’t the most normal lifestyle. This isn’t the lifestyle for me, multiple girls around all the time, the Playboy lifestyle. I don’t know. I just wanted to be true to myself.” Many people found it coincidental that the day she called off the wedding happened to be the same day she debuted her first music single, ‘Club Queen.’ There were also rumors about her cheating with Dr. Phil’s son, Jordan McGraw, who is a songwriter. Crystal denies all of the rumors and claims she isn’t seeing anyone and that she has many friends in the music business. Although the introduction is no longer necessary, Crystal will be featured on the July cover of Playboy with the title “Introducing Mrs. Crystal Hefner.” So could this calledoff wedding bring back hope for former girlfriend, Holly Madison? Although she has her own Vegas show, Peepshow, and reality show, Holly’s World, everyone knows how loving and made-for-Hugh she was. We shall see what the 85-year-old Playboy owner does from here. We all know the main result will be girls, girls, girls. 22 Active

Is JLo Moving On?

American Idol set Jennifer Lopez’s career back on track and it seems like she may be thinking about leaving the show already. After one successful season with American Idol, the judge is claiming that she is “on the fence” about returning because she is so busy. Her single “On the Floor” with Pitbull made a huge impact on the charts and many say it is due to the judge being back in the spotlight and in people’s homes. Jennifer made $12 million during her first season on American Idol. She told BBC Radio, “I loved it, but I have a lot of other things happening, and it’s going to come down to me making a choice of what I want to do for the next year.” Her husband, Marc Anthony, has also recently traded in his singing career for television. He will be starring alongside Jada Pinkett Smith on her hit show, Hawthorne. The couple is also working on their own singing competition show called “Que ‘Viva!: The Chosen” which is based on finding undiscovered talent in Latin America.

Keeping it Kardashian!

Kim Kardashian is getting married and it’s going to cost her fiance as well as her guests! With one of the biggest engagement rings in Hollywood as it is at 20.5 carats, the 30-year-old fashionista racked Active 23

up the values on her wedding registry. Kim and basketball fiance, Kris Humphries, registered at Geary’s for a value of over $172,000 on luxury housewares. The registry was confirmed to E! News and has a wedding date of October 31st. Could it be that Kim and Kris are planning a Halloween ceremony? Sources close to the couple claim that it is on the registry but the date is a joke. Their exact wedding date has not been chosen. In the registry, wedding guests can chose from plates at $305 a piece up to vases costing more than $7500. We all know that Kim has big taste but come on now... However, I assume to tend to her “not so rich” guests, Kim stated that her and Kris do plan on registering at Williams-Sonoma as well. Aw, thank you for being so considerate Kim.

Hollywood Babies Arrive!

Two of the most adorable preggers in Hollywood have given birth! Singer P!nk and motocross champion/entreprenuer, Carey Hart, welcomed their new baby girl - Willow Sage Hart. The singer took to Twitter to announce the birth of their first child, “We are ecstatic to welcome our new beautiful healthy happy baby girl. She’s gorgeous, just like her daddy. #beyondblessed”. Fellow first time mother, Oscar winner Natalie Portman welcomed her new baby boy with fiance, Benjamin Millipied. The couple met when they were filming Black Swan. Congratulations to you all!

Beach Bodies for the Win!

It's summer time and here are some of the sexiest bods out there flaunting their stuff!!! Kellan Lutz, who has been filming for Breaking Dawn, and Zac Efron who is currently training to play a marine in an upcoming film have my guy votes. For the ladies, I’m rollin’ with the born stars from reality. Audrina Patridge who has her own show on VH1 never fails to look gorgeous in a bikini. With her, I choose Kristin Cavallari. I didn’t like her on The Hills but since she’s toned down the partying and become engaged to NFL star, Jay Cutler, the girl looks fab!

ASK AN ATTORNEY Q: Can police take and go through your trash can at

the curb to look for evidence that will let them get a search warrant for drugs?

A:

The U.S. Supreme Court has held that police do not need a warrant to search trash left for collection outside the perimeter of the homestead. The reasoning is that a person does not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in property he or she has abandoned or voluntarily turned over to third parties. Most state courts have ruled the same way. By placing your trash at the curb, or anywhere outside the boundary line of your home, you have made it accessible to the public, and it loses its Fourth Amendment protection. The short answer is as long as the police did not trespass on your property to reach your trash, anything they found in it is fair game and can be used to establish probable cause for a later search warrant. However, there may be other ways to attack the search warrant, such as a lack of probable cause; knowing or recklessly making false statements in the affidavit submitted in support of the warrant; or failing to specify or appropriately limit the items to be seized during the search.

26 Active

Be aware that not every invalid search warrant will result in the suppression of the evidence found as a result. Courts will consider whether an invalid warrant was issued "in good faith," and if so, the search can still be upheld. I recommend you contact an experienced criminal defense lawyer who will review the search warrant in your case, along with the surrounding facts and the applicable case law, and advise you as to your prospects of a successful challenge. Very truly yours,

primer

power A good primer is one of my must-have tools to use before every foundation or eyeshadow application. However, when talking with my friends and clients, I find that not everyone is taking full advantage of what these products have to offer. It's time to change that! I’ll admit when foundation primers first came on the market, 34 Active

I viewed them as another gimmick to give money away to the cosmetic companies. I was wrong! Not only do I currently use a foundation primer on all of my clients, I swear by its use in my daily makeup routine.

Smashbox’s Photo Finish

L’Oreal’s Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base

Foundation primers hold two main purposes. They smooth the skin’s surface and make both pores and fine lines nearly invisible. They also take away shine from the face and help to absorb excess oil production throughout the day. An added benefit of most primers is that they are silicone based, which makes them very unlikely to clog your pores. The smoothing effect of a primer allows your foundation to glide on easily and results in a flawless finish. It also results in using less foundation on a daily basis. The second purpose of a primer is to increase the longevity of wear of your foundation. This is extremely beneficial living in the humid climate of Florida! I have two favorite face primers that I switch back and forth using. The first one, and probably my favorite of the two, is Smashbox’s Photo Finish. It is lightweight, Active 35

and has a blend of vitamins A and E, grape seed extract and green tea. This primer has won several beauty awards, and I can promise you that they are well deserved! My foundation has never looked so good or lasted as long! The second primer that I use regularly is L’Oreal’s Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base. In comparison to Smashbox’s primer, it is considerably heavier, however if you warm it up on the back of your hand before application, it tends to thin out. This primer’s formulation has a combination of light powders that leave the skin matte and velvety smooth. I like the feeling of this primer on my face, and it really holds the foundation throughout the day. The only reason that I tend to use my Smashbox primer more often is most likely the fact that I don’t need to thin it out, which makes application quick and easy! It’s no secret that eyeshadows are one of the hardest products to maintain throughout MAC’s paint pot the day. Our

lids become oily naturally and cause eyeshadow to fade and crease over time. A good shadow primer can prevent this from happening! Not only will a primer hold your shadow for an extended amount of time, but it also grabs the pigment and allows the shadow to show truer to shade. I never apply shadow without first applying a primer, and once you’ve tried it, you wont either. The difference is substantial. My favorite primer by far is MAC’s paint pot. I use the shade Painterly on a daily basis because it is closest to my lid color. However, MAC’s paint pots come in a variety of colors that are sure to enhance and hold any eye look you choose! Try it, you’ll love it! Urban Decay Lip Primer Potion is meant as a primer to allow lipstick to stay around a little longer without fading or feathering I think the true joy of the product is how it aids in application. Prepping lips prior to with this primer will allow for a smoother, even finish. Well that’s it for this month’s article! Add primers to your makeup arsenal and see what a difference it can make.

extensions a hair DO!

Hair extensions are the hottest items of today's beauty industry. Extensions were actually developed in the 80's but because of poor quality of hair and high cost the idea was put away for a few years. Many moons later hair additions have resurfaced due to better quality hair and better methods for attaching them. Some we even borrowed from our feathery friends. Most of the popularity is due to the fact that celebrities use them and the versatility of the new extensions. I would like to clarify what makes the best hair extensions. I loosely use the term Remy. It seems that the hype right now is all about Remy. But to a stylist it simply 38 Active

means that the cuticle is going in the same direction. With that said your extensions should always be Remy. Some companies are marketing their products as Remy, but to the unknowing it sounds like you are getting something magical and amazing. Therefore the most preferred hair extensions are Remy. Remy extensions are those made from all real human hair where the strands are kept close together and the roots all fall in the dame direction from tip to end. This also helps reduce tangling. I always explain to my clients that if you are going to have extensions , you need to take the necessary precautions. When washing your hair, you have to make sure not to scrub at the roots. When applying conditioner make sure you start at the bottom of your hair and only continue to the mid-length of your hair strands. When brushing your hair, start an inch from the scalp when dry and at the bottom when when wet. This prevents your brush or comb from snagging on the extensions where it's attached to your hair. Also another good tip would be to braid your hair if you are going to be swimming or working out. This is just an extra precaution so you don't have a rats nest to detangle when you are done with your activity. Remy extensions are designed to last longer than other types of extensions. These extensions are made from real human hair and are added to your existing hair by way of heat or cold fusion or sewn in to your hair or attached by a cylinder made of aluminum or silicone. Extension are generally used by those with thin or fine hair to add volume or for those with short hair, extensions are used to lengthen your hair into luxurious looking tresses. And because they are made of real human hair extensions are easily styled. Tasks such as washing, blow-drying, and curling to suit whatever look you want to accomplish are easily done. If you were to have synthetic hair pieces you are limited to what you can do because they can melt under certain temperatures. Believe me this is not fun. I once had a girl try to convince me her hair was real human hair and when she put the flat iron to it it sizzled off an Active 39

extra layer to her hair cut. And she was the maid of honor in the wedding I was doing. Note to self get to know your stylist and build a trusting relationship, otherwise they could mislead you into thinking otherwise. Your stylist should be able to consult with you and the two of you should determine what the best extensions are for you to wear. I prefer these extensions over fusion extensions because I believe they are less damaging to hair. They usually take about two hours to apply as a new set. Once you buy the first set of hair you won't need to buy new for at least a year. But all that depends on whether or not you don't change your hair color or style. After that the only maintenance you have is to come back every six to eight weeks to have them raised back toward your scalp because your hair will grow in that time. And that would be around the dame time that you would have to back and get your color touch up done therefore it can be done at the dame time. Color matching is very versatile, and if your stylist needs to color your extensions it is easily done with a demi permanent hair color or it can be lightened with an non ammonia lightener. Another reason to make sure you buy real human hair extensions. If you still have some hesitation about extensions you can always go to Sally's Beauty Supply and buy a pack of clip in extensions to give it a trial run. Of course these are not permanent but they will give you some what of an idea of what it would feel like to have some extra hair in your head. They are great for a night out and to add a little flirty fun! Keep it Classy! Carmen Ivan Liliana’s Hair Studio 904-563-0942

ELITE FITNESS food for ladies myths

by Noha Soliman

Forever in search of the perfect calorie-burning, fat-melting, do-itin-two-weeks diet – “health gurus” seem to have come up with a million different concoctions of how to get thin quickly and easily. A popular notion is that consuming a diet high in supposedly “catabolic foods” – or foods that require more energy to chew, digest, and absorb than they actually contain (“negative calories”) makes for a good way to lose weight. You’ve probably heard it all: eat only celery, grapefruit and apples you want and you’ll watch the pounds melt away. While it is true that metabolism is increased after eating – known as the thermic effect of food – this caloric expenditure is relatively small, and no study has ever demonstrated, regardless of the dietary make up of the food, that more calories are used to metabolize a food than the number of calories the food contains. Biologically the notion just doesn’t add up. Active 45

Why would we evolve to eat food that provides us with negative energy? As you can tell by the obesity epidemic, a consequence of overabundance of food and low levels of physical activity, the human body is well-suited to hold on to fat. Evolutionarily, we aren’t made to eat food that inherently makes us lose weight. The truth is that there is no scientific research in support of a catabolic diet or any “negative calorie” foods. That’s not to say you can’t lose weight on these “diets.” While you won’t burn more calories eating a food than the number of calories the food contains, you can and should include low-calorie foods in a healthy eating plan to help keep your weight loss efforts on track. Following is a list of low-calorie but nutrient-dense foods that will help you fill up and, as part of a balanced eating and exercise plan, take off the extra weight. Blueberries This low-calories (50 berries contains only 40 calories) nutrient powerhouse contains high levels of antioxidants and may even help to stave off cognitive decline. Grapefruit Low in calories (only 40 calories in a medium grapefruit), high in taste and nutrients, and possibly containing a unique compound that aids in weight loss, grapefruit is a great addition to any breakfast. Artichokes A medium artichoke contains only 60 calories and a whopping 6 grams of fiber which is sure to keep you feeling full. The artichoke is also an excellent source of many 46 Active

vitamins and minerals, including folic acid which is especially important for pregnant women. Spinach The epitome of health food, you can get a good dousing of many of the vitamins and minerals you need with a large spinach salad (if you load up with 2 cups of spinach you’ll only be taking in 14 calories). Lentils Lentils are low in calories (a ½ cup contains slightly more than 100 calories) and high in protein, iron, and fiber. This makes for a super-healthy snack or addition to any salad, soup, or meal. Orange This citrus fruit is tasty, widely available, relatively inexpensive, easy to transport, and a low-calorie (about 60 calories in a medium-sized orange) but filling snack that also happens to be loaded with vitamins and minerals. Watermelon A cup of cut-up watermelon weighs in at less than 50 calories and this refreshing summer fruit is also loaded in vitamins which may help to prevent many diseases . Watermelon also has been shown to help stave off heat stroke. Egg whites Egg whites are a great way to get a ton of protein (4 grams per white) with nil calories (about 20 calories). Throw in the yolk and you’re up to 80 calories and 6 grams of protein, but also a healthy dousing of many vitamins and minerals along with hearthealthy omega 3 fatty acids.

Active 47

Canned tuna Eating a can of water-packed tuna is a low-cal way to get loads of lean protein, omega 3 fatty acids, B vitamins, selenium, and vitamin D. Tuna is a great way to get in the recommended minimum of two servings per week of fish at about 130 calories per can. Bok choy (chinese cabbage) Very low cal (a half-cup serving has only 10 calories) and nutrient-dense (rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium), this Chinese cabbage is a must have for any Asianstyle meal. In general, negative calorie foods come from fruits and vegetables as listed above. Other examples include pineapple, papaya, apples, lettuce, cauliflower, cucumbers, zucchini, peach, honeydew and cantaloupe. These are beneficial because of their negative calorie properties and because they hold strong detox properties. Other vegetables include broccoli, green beans, asparagus and carrots. Celery is especially worthy because they only holds 10% of the amount of calories required to digest this vegetable, so the remaining 90% has to come from somewhere else, like your fat stores.

The Monkees performed before a sold out crowd at the Florida Theatre. Peter Tork, Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz sang 40 songs during the nearly 3 hour show.

BY Evelyn Kormondy

The audience was treated to video clips of the Monkeys on a wide screen projection unit at the back of the stage. Davy treated the crowd to a spry dance routine in a white tuxedo that matched the same routine from the late 60’s. One family from Jacksonville - The Crumptons - saw the Monkees 10 years ago from the balcony of the Florida Theatre. This show they moved up to row 6 and said it was the best show yet. That is some endorsement considering father Tom saw the Monkees in Jacksonville in 1967 when Jimi Hendrix was the opening act.
