It’s about the quarterback. Always will be. It’s the most important position in sports. The only other one in the discussion is starting pitcher and they only get the ball every four or five days. The QB touches the ball on every offensive play, is the leader and the manager and has to be among the best players, and athletes on his own team to be effective. My friend Matt Robinson, a starter at Georgia and in the NFL with New York and Denver and the USFL here in Jacksonville marveled at the power of the quarterback when he stepped into his first NFL huddle. “I’d always just played the game and played my position. But in the NFL, I stepped into the huddle and guys who were 10, 15 years older than me were just waiting for instructions. It didn’t matter who I was. I was the quarterback!” Watch ACTIVE 9

Tom Brady on the sidelines or go back a few years and watch Troy Aikman interact with his teammates. Both are part cheerleader, part psychologist, part teammate, part coach, all leader and confident in their skill. “If you’ve every played quarterback at any level, you’re a brother of mine,” Aikman recently said on ESPN’s “Year of the Quarterback.” “There’s something about that position that calls for all kinds of skills. If you’ve played it, you know. If not, you might not get it.” Where else in football is there room for somebody with “touch.” How can somebody who is expected to stand in the pocket and take the most violent hit also be expected to console a teammate when he’s at his lowest? You might not think Joe Kapp and Peyton Manning have anything in common but as quarterbacks, they had to have many of the same skills. I laugh every time I hear somebody suggest Tim Tebow should switch to H-back in the NFL. Tim’s a quarterback. He was that in high school and before. Out of position as a freshman, Tebow trans10 ACTIVE

ferred to Nease as a quarterback, nothing else. Hard to say if there’s a quarterback competition in Jacksonville or what the Jaguars timetable is for Blaine Gabbert to become the starter. But I can tell you this: When he walks into a room, there’s no question he’s a quarterback. You can tell when an athlete walks into the room, and Gabbert is certainly that. But he has a quarterback’s presence, an air of confidence. I asked him about it when the Jaguars first drafted him in April. “I really like playing football,” he said, “But I LOVE being a quarterback. Absolutely.” That’s obvious.

MR. & MRS. HUMPHRIES

Kim Kardashian is officially off of the market! She exchanged vows with NBA player, Kris Humphries, in Montecito, CA in front of 450 guests. The beautiful bride wore an ivory Vera Wang dress and was walked down the aisle by stepfather, Bruce Jenner. Kourtney and Khloe served as co-maid of honors while Kendall, Kylie, and Kris’s sister, Kaela were bridesmaids. Even Kourtney’s lil man, Mason, did his role as ring bearer. The wedding was beautifully exquisite and full of A-listers who were instructed to wear only black and white to the ceremony. The food was catered by Wolfgang Puck and the newlyweds danced while being serenaded by singer, Robin Thicke. E! was in attendance filming for a two-episode special to be aired in October. While many insiders explained the wedding as “perfect”, some stated that it was “awkward”. Insider told US Weekly that “There were 100 crew members everywhere, people were complaining about almost getting hit by camera guys.” The newlyweds also had to wear microphones, especially since the helicopters over head were so loud that people couldn’t hear. Yet past all that - I must say.. Kim and Kris looked like a magical fairy tale couple - beautiful!

LA INK NOT SO PERMANENT!

Going for round 2 is couple Jesse James and tattoo artist Kat Von D. After calling off their engagement a month ago, the couple has reunited and confirmed it on both of their Twitters. “Sometimes you ACTIVE 21

are only given one chance in life,” Jesse told People. “It was up to me to open my eyes and see it. That girl is my chance. I will never stop fighting and striving to hold on to her. Showing her how special she is, and how much I love her.” Ironically the announcement of their engagement back on comes at the same time that TLC announces that LA Ink will not return and that the current season is its last. Kat stated that leaving the show was her own decision and took to Twitter, “I love how me deciding not to continue doing LA Ink turns into the show being cancelled. Thanks TLC. Regardless of everything, I remain grateful.” The series finale of LA Ink will air on September 15.

SECOND PLACE?

Maybe getting your heart broken and being the runner-up on The Bachelorette isn’t so bad after all. It certainly isn’t for winemaker, Ben Flajnik. After having his heart crushed by Ashley on the finale of The Bachelorette, he found himself having an A-lister tweeting him for a date. Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt posted on her Twitter, “OMG! Ben F accept my final rose! Gotta book a flight to Sonoma!” The two actually found themselves having dinner but claimed on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show that it was “by chance.” It definitely seems like Ben will be just fine after The Bachelorette. 22 ACTIVE

WANTED: 2011 BONNIE AND CLYDE!

Casting a couple to play the gangster duo, Bonnie and Clyde, in the upcoming film “The Story of Bonnie and Clyde” has become a hard task in Hollywood. Kevin Zegers and Hilary Duff were both casted to play the couple and have since both been dropped. Hilary and hockey player husband just celebrated their one year anniversary and with the celebration also announced that they will be expecting their first born. Anniversary, pregnant, and dropped from feature film - ouch. She was suppose to play famous bank robber, Bonnie Parker, but due to the baby news, production has decided to move forward with the film without her. Shooting is scheduled for the fall and Hilary will not be available until June. Producers are also looking for someone to play the part of Clyde after dropping Kevin Zegers from the role. They stated it was because of scheduling conflicts - I highly doubt he’s pregnant.

QUICK DISH!

Singer Gavin DeGraw suffered a beating in New York City from three unknown assailants. After the attack, he was then struck by a cab. The singer suffered a concussion, black eyes, and broken nose. He had to be replaced on his tour with Maroon 5 and Train as he healed from the injuries. • It was definitely a Good Morning America when Nicki Minaj had a nipple slip during her morning performance! •It was announced that Kenny Ortega will be remaking the classic film, Dirty Dancing. Kenny choreographed the original with Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. Another dance classic, Footloose, is set to release in theaters on October 14. • Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen has decided to “quit acting.” She wants to focus more on her music career. Producers have announced that the Jenny character will not return at this time to the show. • Amy Winehouse, was found dead in her home in London. Her parents have announced that her home will house an organization in honor of her that will help children in need. The Amy Winehouse Foundation will be partially funded by proceeds by Amy’s last recording, “Body and Soul”, a duet with Tony Bennett.

ASK AN ATTORNEY Q: I am 21 and my doctor says that I am pregnant. I have

called "John," the father, several times to let him know, but he will not return my calls. I finally ran into him the other day and told him. Because it was a one-nightstand, he believes it's not his. I want to keep my baby, but I am in school, have a low-paying job and I am worried about being able to care for my child. Can you tell me what my legal rights may be?

A:

Obviously you have some tough decisions to make regarding your life and the life you will be providing for your child, so first I want to wish you the best. While "John" may refuse to be a part of the child’s daily life, there are some legal rights any parent has to ensure the other parent takes financial responsibility. You should consult an attorney to discuss your situation including the specific costs and attorney’s fees associated with pursuing any option. You should also discuss whether to file a paternity suit against John to establish that he is the father of your child, and to ask the court to award child support. Chapter 742 of the Florida Statutes contains much of the legal framework for filing a paternity suit (your lawyer should be familiar with these provisions). Here are some of the more relevant ones:

24 ACTIVE

Florida Statute 742.011 states: “Any woman who is pregnant or has a child, any man who has reason to believe that he is the father of a child, or any child may bring proceedings in the circuit court to determine the paternity of the child when paternity has not been established by law or otherwise.” If you file suit you will have the burden to prove that John is the father. However, Florida Statute 742.12 says: “The court on its own motion may require the child, mother, and alleged fathers to submit to scientific tests that are generally acceptable within the scientific community to show a probability of paternity”. In other words, either the judge can order that John take a paternity test, or you could ask the judge to order John to take the test if you provide something in writing under oath that the judge believes establishes the legal and factual basis to order the test. Please note that even if the result is positive, the law does not find it to be conclusive. Rather, the result would be considered by the judge as (potentially) strong evidence that John is the father, along with any other evidence you would present. If the judge determines that John is the father, Florida Statute 742.031 also states: “If appropriate, the court shall order the father to pay ... moneys sufficient to pay reasonable attorney’s fees, hospital or medical expenses, cost of confinement, and any other expenses incident to the birth of the child and to pay all costs of the proceeding... The court shall order either or both parents owing a duty of support to the child to pay support pursuant to S.61.30.“ ACTIVE 25

This means that the judge can order John to pay for your medical bills and other expenses up to and including the birth of the child. In terms of child support, the judge will generally look at the financial situation of both you and John, and may order that John pay a certain amount for support (the full criteria for determining whether and how much support is involved is beyond the scope of this response). You should know that if you go to court and lose, there is a chance the judge could order you to pay for John’s attorney’s fees. Also, the court typically will order a parenting plan which will decide who get physical custody of the child, but also may grant John visitation. That is why it is important that you consult with an attorney so you can make an informed decision of the benefits and potential consequences of the paternity suit or other options.

Very truly yours,

christy Greene

Everything you ever wanted to know about

DJ Shotgun Born in the Philippians, DJ Shotgun moved to Detroit when he was 3 years old. Little did he know or yet understand, it would be the best move of his life. He started in the music industry at a very young age. In fact, he was the youngest DJ to be on a radio station in Detroit. During his newfound passion, Shotgun learned how to not only mix music, but also entertain the crowd through the movie, Beat Street. He played all over Detroit from house parties to clubs entertaining crowds. DJ Shotgun knew that Detroit was famous for their battle scene, so he knew he would be taking on the best of the best. He practiced for a year straight in his basement and came out on top. No one expected the whirlwind of a young kid blowing experienced DJ’s out of the water with his fresh new skills. Now that he had conquered Detroit, it was on to bigger and better things. Shotgun moved to Atlanta, GA where he could pursue his passion, hip-hop. Today, DJ Shotgun has played all over the nation, with some of the biggest DJ’s. We can’t wait to see what is in store for him next! 28 ACTIVE

So how did it all begin and who inspired you? I would have to say, Beach Street the movie, DJ Jam Master Jay and Jazzy Jeff. Where did your name come from? I was blowin’ out this whole fleet of DJ’s in a basement and my boy Marcus said, “Man, you blew them out like a shotgun. You’re DJ Shotgun.” What was the first event you ever played at? Ha, that was Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School Ice Breaker Dance. What was the best event you ever played at? When I was an opening DJ in Bogotá, Columbia, and I played for the whole city of Bogota. That’s 60,000 people in the die-hard rain. That’s some gangsta shit, showin’ us love. What was your first album you ever bought? Fat Boys. What is your favorite song of all time? Eric Baez, President. When all of the partying is over how do you like to chill out? Go to the crib, watch a little TV and work on music, or in the studio. What is the funniest thing that ever happened at an event? Recently, at a local spot in Jacksonville, there was this girl I’d been lookin’ at standing in the booth with her shirt off. Security comes over and throws her jacket on her. So I keep Dj’in and I look down and she’s curled up in the DJ booth with no bra and just panties on! ACTIVE 29

What is your favorite genre to mix? Electro and House. What is one thing that you would like to change in the local music scene? I want to see DJ’s get more into turn tables. I want to see them turn into Dj’s. I don’t want to see all these robots just pressing buttons and trying to look cool for the ladies. What is one thing that you would like to see stay the same with the local music scene? I don’t want the biggest small town in the world feelin’ like they need to change anything cuz Jacksonville will always be the biggest small town in the world. If you had a chance to work with anyone of your choosing, who would it be? Cee lo. What are the main spots you DJ at? You can find me at Club Liquid on a Thursday, Latitude 30 on Fridays for Flashback Fridays and Marks on Saturday for Industry Saturdays, my biggest night. What advice would you give to up and coming djs? Learn your music, man, learn your music. Learn the history of the music, why you’re playin’ it, because at the end of the day, it will make you a better DJ. Dj Shotgun's Words of Wisdom: Being a DJ is a musician. If you want to treat it like that, it will do good things for you. If you just want to treat it like a fad, it will wear out.

the do's & dont's of

make-up I've put together a list of some of the most crucial do’s’ and don’ts’ to follow when playing with makeup. If you’re clutching your year-old mascara out of fear that I'm getting ready to call you out, you’re right! Get prepped! DO! Makeup should only go on a freshly washed and moisturized face. 34 ACTIVE

DO! When applying makeup, make sure to have bright even light in front of the mirror your using. If possible, use natural light by sitting or standing near a window with your mirror. DO! BLEND! You don’t want to see where color begins or ends. Whether it’s foundation, blush, or eye color, be sure to blend completely to avoid hard, drawn lines. One exception to this rule would be a defined eyeliner line. DO! Find out what type of skin you have because different skin types require different skin care products and makeup. DO! Exfoliate your skin before you apply makeup, to prevent dead skin cells from getting trapped in the pores. Flaky (dead) skin can show through your foundation. DO! Check for expiration dates and get rid of any expired makeup! On the bottom of your makeup items, look for a little picture of a jar with a number on it. That number is telling you how many months that product is good for. Start making it a habit to write the month/year on the package to help ensure you don’t ever use an expired product. Bacteria builds up over time and can cause a bad reaction with your skin. Get rid of it! DO! Clean your makeup utensils often to prevent and eliminate bacteria which can form on your makeup utensils ACTIVE 35

DO! Remove your makeup every night before bedtime to allow your skin to breath. Clogged pores=blemishes. DO! Wear sunscreen under your makeup especially during the summer but also throughout the rest of the year. Lets keep our faces as young as possible for as long as possible! DO! Choose an eye shadow that complements your eye color by selecting contrasting color. Blue eyes are generally complemented by brown shadow, green eyes by violet, and brown eyes by blue. Sweep a pale pink or peach eye shadow across your upper lids for a natural look. Apply your lightest shade first, followed by progressively darker colors as you move to the outside and crease of the eye, and blend well with a brush. DO! Try a dramatic eyeliner color across the upper lids for a striking evening look. DON'T! Pink complexions should not wear pinkish foundations. Try to wear a more yellow-based foundation to even out your skin tone. DO! Curl your lashes before applying mascara. It will open up your eyes and make them 36 ACTIVE

look bigger. If you wait until after, you can risk damaging them. DON'T! Lend your makeup to anyone. Bacteria can be transferred through makeup from one person to another. DON'T! Choose very pink eye shadow or liner; they can make your eyes look irritated DON'T! Apply a frosted or metallic eye shadow across the entire lid WITHOUT first applying an eyeshadow base. During the course of wearing it, the shadow can settle in fine lines and make you look older than you actually are. DON'T! Line the entire eye (upper and lower lids) in a single color; this will make your eyes appear smaller. It can work perfectly for a night out, however during the day, try using a lighter shade of eyeliner on your lower lid to keep your eyes looking big and bright!

Until next time -M

summer

damage

Summertime is an invitation for a more lackadaisical approach to hair care. It means maybe letting bangs grow into a long cheek bone length layer not being in curly or wavy hair denial anymore by skipping the blow dryer and letting hair air-dry. Rocking summer appropriate updo’s and braids, getting beach hair from actually going to the beach, and covering up three day unwashed hair with hats and scarves. But with this season also comes certain hair hazards like chlorine, UV rays, saltwater and humidity. All which can lead to pool hair, fried scalps and frizzy, dried out hair. Because we are more active during the summer months, people tend to wash their hair more during the hot summer months. The heavy detergents in most shampoos can dry out strands. This is a problem that is then exaggerated by the frying effects of the hot 38 ACTIVE

sun. Using a sulfate-free shampoo is a gentler option. While damaging hair can be easy, repairing can be frustratingly hard. The primary components of hair fiber, keratins (proteins) and melarin are the hairs natural shields against UVA and UVB rays. While your skin can heal itself after exposure to UVA’s and UVB’s (skin is in a continuous state of renewal – if you burn in the sun and peel afterwords, you know your skin will be back to a healthy condition in a few days), hair cant be spontaneously repaired. Excess exposure to the sun can end up causing Keratin degeneration, which ultimately leaves you with dried out, discolored hair that can only become more damaged if it isn't repaired. Sun, wind, salt, and chlorine are all harsh on your hair. Heat has a drying effect( the hair’s moisture content is reduced, so it loses it’s softness) Wind dries out the hair and increases static electricity, and salt and chlorine attack the hair. The cuticle opens up, and the hair breaks and split ends appear. Therefore your hair loses it’s natural elasticity and becomes dry and brittle causing breakage, hair loss and other problems your hair is dry, dull and impossible to style. First, you need to prep your hair before you head out into the sun or the pool or ocean, wet your hair with water before swimming. Most beaches and pools have a shower near by for rinsing off after, but you should make it your first stop before swimming. If you do, this will dull the chlorine and salt water, not allowing it to permeate the hair membrane. If the shower is not available, you can always carry a bottle of water with you so you can wet throughout the day before jumping in for a swim. ACTIVE 39

It is just as important to protect your scalp from the sun, so you don't burn and turn into a flaky mess. So this is what I have discovered: spray on suncreens are miracle workers. Not only are they great for your body but they are also great for spraying on your scalp. Unless your head is covered with a hat or scarf, the sun will burn your scalp. So since you are already putting sunscreen on your body and face, what’s a couple more spritzes on your scalp. They also make clear sprays which make less of a mess. You can also use some products on your hair that block UV Rays frying it. Companies such as Frederick Fekkai, Kerastase, Redken, and Biolage all have products from sprays to gels, that contain a UV shield that will protect your hair from root to end. The biggest concern is actually remembering to apply these products, so make sure you keep them handy in your beach tote. If your hair has been ultra fried in the sun and surf, you should invest in a good treatment mask to replenish moisture to it. Once a week or max, twice, if your hair has really been through hell, use a heavy duty moisturizing mask after you’ve shampooed your hair. Make sure you saturate each and every strand with the mask, leave it in for 5-10 minutes, then rinse out with cool water. You’ll find your hair is much silkier and smooth. Keep it Classy! ACTIVE FITNESS with DAN MASSEY I want to jump right in and clarify some myths about protein consumption. Time and time again, I get customers that walk into Jax Sports and Nutrition ask me, “whats the best fat burner you sell?” My response if always, “What do you typically eat on a daily basis?” The typical response is the customer saying how they know they eat horribly, but they just want a fat burner to help get them motivated. Well ladies and gentleman, I’m here to tell you right now that fat burners dont actually “burn fat” like you may think. What they really do is assist in increasing your metabolism if you are getting enough protein in your diet. Confused? Well, let me explain. In all actuallity, the best fat burner is a good protein powder. In order for the body to hold onto existing muscle and burn off body fat you have to take in 1 gram of protein per 1 pound of lean body mass, (not your total body weight), daily. now this is a far cry from the 2 grams of protein per 1 pound of lean body mass ratio used to gain

Rapid weight loss can be quick and easy -- if you believe the advertising claims. Fad diets and weight loss supplements promise a slimmer body in no time. And Americans want to believe those claims, spending $33 billion every year on weight loss products. Do any of these products really produce rapid weight loss? Are they safe? And what are the risks of such fast weight loss?

1. Rapid weight loss rarely works over the long-term. Most people (more than 95%) who lose weight rapidly, regain it at some stage.

2. It makes you look old! Research shows that extreme thinness makes the face appear older 46 ACTIVE

3. Rapid weight loss does not equal rapid fat-loss. 4. A person losing a vast amount of weight in a short time frame (say, 5-10 LB per week) is losing more water and muscle than they are fat. Lighter does not always equal leaner.

5. When that person regains weight (and they usually do), they will have more fat and less muscle than when they started.

6. In other words, rapid weight loss is a very effective way to lose muscle, get dehydrated and change your body composition for the worst. 7. When the extreme dieter finds him or herself back at their original (pre-diet) weight with less muscle and more fat, they will also have a slower metabolism (than they had pre weightloss/gain) because muscle is metabolically active. 8. In other words, rapid weight-loss will ruin your metabolism. Badly.

9. Most (maybe all?) Rapid weightloss plans are not mentally, emotionally, physically or practically maintainable. So why start? 10. People who ‘sell’ such programs and products understand that, when it comes to the very emotional matter of weight-loss, some ACTIVE 47

people will believe and buy anything. Desperate people are easy to manipulate and take advantage of.

11. The optimal rate to lose weight is about one percent of our body-weight per week. 120 LB = 1.2 LB per week. 200lbs = 2lbs per week. And so on.

12. Weight loss supplements that promise rapid weight loss are sometimes not suitable for those with certain health problems. Some of the products that promise rapid weight loss can often have negative side effects. 13. Many of the rapid weight loss products on the market have not been approved by the Food and Drugs Administration.

14. Many of the symptoms associated with rapid weight loss are as follows: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Low resting blood pressure Headache Soar throat Fatigue and/or Lack of Energy Skipped period (in women) Constipation Bloodshot eyes Rapid and frequent mood changes Increase in stress Insomnia Vomiting/Nausea Depression

15. Depleting the body of the nutrients and the calories it requires to perform effectively and efficiently will only make normal everyday activities more difficult. On the other hand, maintaining a caloric deficit that is sustainable and healthy will produce a more consistent rate of weight loss, provide the daily energy required to perform all activities, support a predictable rate of weight loss that will allow the individual to define their weight loss goal milestones, and eliminate motivational issues and concerns.

16. One of the top concerns associated with any weight loss program is the possibility of nutritional deficiency which occurs when the body is consistently deprived of the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and amino acids that it requires to function optimally. This increases the risk of serious illness and/or disease increase exponentially. 14. According to a 2007 medical study, approximately 1/3 of teenage girls currently, or at one time, suffer from anorexia. In addition, this statistical number has continued to rise since the completion of the 2007 medical study.
