There are many cliché’s involving sports and life. “Sports doesn’t build character, it reveals it.” “Sports imitates life.” But perhaps the truth is how sports gives us a chance to gain perspective on what might be going on around you. As the tragedy at Penn State continues to unfold, it’s much more a story about responsibility, accountability and how an organization works (or doesn’t) as it is about sports. The time-honored ideas of loyalty and leadership, so valued in a sports oriented situation, play a big part in what happened and how it was handled in State College. Here in the state of Florida, we’ve been lucky to witness the domination of college football by Miami, FSU and Florida in the last 20 years. If one of those teams didn’t win or play for a National ACTIVE 9

Championship, they had some say on who did. It’s heady stuff, knowing your team is going to be good year after year. There’s a whole generation of fans who don’t know anything but winning when it comes to their teams. That shapes your thinking, shapes your actions and especially shapes your expectations. But somewhere along the way, that changes, leaving fans with a couple of choices going forward. Do I now hate my own team? Do I chastise them for letting me down? Do I affix blame from the ownership on down and demand they all be fired? How fans react in those situations is a pretty good indicator as to how they’ll react when it really counts. Fans of the “U” used to have a swagger that bordered on the absurd. Now they’ve been forced to retreat from that stance, as Miami is a mid-level team in their own conference. FSU’s fall from grace forced Seminole fans to make their own decisions about their icon, Bobby Bowden. How they reacted to that will give them a future lesson on a changing of the guard in their own lives. We often joke that the most important three words in the University of Florida football media guide are “Since Nineteen Ninety.” A great many Gator fans don’t even know what you

10 ACTIVE

mean when you allude to the one-time rallying cry of “Wait ‘till next year!” Nonetheless, while the 2011 season seems like only a bump in the road, it is giving a lot of Gators a taste of how it felt to their opponents in the last twenty years with the Orange and Blue were on the other side of the line. While the Jaguars, Bucs and Dolphins have had their moments of excitement, it’s been a test of patience for their fans all over the state recently. Some people can probably learn a lot about themselves by reflecting on what kind of fan they are. Loyal, fickle, fair-weather whatever. What’s that say about you?

NUMBERS KEEP ROLLING IN!

Just shortly after my story regarding Round 2 between Kat Von D and Jesse James, it's officially over. Cause of the break-up: 19 women and counting. Kat Von D wrote on her blog that she deserves a big, fat "I told you so." from everyone in her life. While trying to rekindle their love the past couple months, woman after woman came forward to the tattoo artist about her unfaithful fiance. Jesse James who went through a hasty divorce with actress, Sandra Bullock, was pinned as a cheating man. Jesse cheated on Sandra quite often with porn stars and strippers. Kat claimed that with her love for Jesse she was hoping to "prove the world wrong," the two were planning on a summer wedding. Kat told People magazine, "I wish Jesse nothing but the best in life and in love." Jesse has had no comment since the allegations.

72 DAYS LATER!

After all the reports about Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian's quick marriage, the NBA star states that he is ready to sign the divorce papers and just get the whole thing over with. When the divorce went public, Kris laid low and stayed in his hometown state of Minnesota with family and close friends. The shortly-lived marriage of 72 days has been mocked on every talk show, award show, and comedy show across the board. Kim is the one who filed the divorce and reports have been that Kris was completely blindsided by the situation. This was Kim's second marriage; her first one being to music producer Damon Thomas when she was ACTIVE 21

only 19 years old. Although she states that the wedding and love with Kris was real, many say that it is ironic that the same lawyer that prepared their pre-nuptials agreements is the same lawyer that is representing Kim. However, fans of the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" drama will not see anything regarding the divorce. The couple filmed a two-part wedding special but we will not get a divorce special. Let's be honest. Kim has extensions that have lasted longer than her marriage.

KRISTIN VS. LC!

Our favorite The Hills leading ladies have been busy in the love department. Dancing with the Stars contestant Kristin Cavallari has reunited with longtime boyfriend, Jay Cutler. She must be his good luck charm because since the reunion the Chicago Bears quarterback has been playing like a football star. The two have been all over the Windy City, Chicago. She was involved in rumors that she was enjoying time with her DWTS partner, Mark Ballas, but all were denied. Lauren Conrad, on the other hand, was cuddling publicly for a few months with DWTS dancer, Derek Hough. Since then, the two have split and she's been seen with two different gentlemen! First, the 25-year-old was partying at a LA nightclub with Gossip Girl star, Chace Crawford. The two were seen making out and later went to an after-party at a mutual friend's house. A week later, LC was having a night full of glee with Glee star, Cory Monteith. They snuggled up in conversation and exchanged numbers. While Kristin is shacked up, LC is single and ready to mingle! 22 ACTIVE

JUSTIN'S NIGHT SALUTING TO THE MARINES!

Justin stayed true to his word and escorted 23-year-old combat instructor Kelsey De Santis to the Marine Corp ball in Richmond, Virginia. After the event, Justin put on his blog that the evening was "one of the most moving events I've ever had." He wrote on his website, "I felt so proud to be there. I felt like I was getting a chance to be among my heroes."

QUICK DISH!

Singer Jessica Simpson and fiance Eric Johnson are expecting their first child together. Jessica is loving the experience and stated that "Pregnancy is made for her." She loves the spiritual connection and already has the desire to "have more kids." Congratulations to the couple! While Hilary Duff is celebrating her pregnancy and first year of marriage, sister Haylie Duff has split from boyfriend, Nick Zano. The two were together for three years after meeting on the movie set of "My Sexiest Year." Haylie's rep told US Weekly that the relationship just simply ran its course. Maybe this break up will spark their acting careers again being as that its been non-existent the past year! Merry Christmas, everyone! See you next year. XOXO — D! ACTIVE 23

ASK AN ATTORNEY Q:

A:

I have seen and heard commercials for different 1-800help lines that say they will help you find an attorney after you have been in a car accident. I think one of them said you can get a specific amount of money if you are hurt in the accident. Other commercials for lawyers said you *may* be entitled to $10,000 depending upon the facts. Even though I have not been in an accident, I wanna know what is the story (in case I get in an accident, I would like know the truth from the fiction)? If you are ever hurt in a car accident, and you are concerned about finding an attorney, there is a lot of information available which can be confusing and intimidating. First, let me be clear: an attorney CANNOT promise or guarantee any result for you after an accident. An attorney CAN: • Talk to you about the facts of your case; • Discuss the law involving negligence and how that applies to your facts; • Review available insurance and other information about everyone involved in the accident; • Consult with your doctor or review your medical records to find out the doctor's opinion about the extent and severity of your injuries; and • Give you an opinion about the strengths and weaknesses of your case and advise you of various possible monetary outcomes. ACTIVE 25

As for 1-800-help lines, I do not want to address any specific situation, especially without knowing what someone has or has not sa If you are ever hurt in a car accident, and you are concerned about finding an attorney, there is a lot of information available which can be confusing and intimidating. When they say you 'may be entitled to $10,000', obviously they are being careful about guaranteeing anything but instead identifying one outcome that may happen. They are most likely referring to the $10,000 personal injury protection benefits that most, if not all, Florida drivers carry under their car insurance. Whether or not medical bills or lost wages can or will be covered by insurance is something you should discuss with an attorney, along with any other questions you want to ask. I always recommend that someone consult with an attorney if they are hurt in an accident. Remember, you are not obligated to hire any specific attorney, but it is always to your benefit to be fully informed. Very truly yours,

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT

DJ KevinSantos Only a resident in Jacksonville for the past year and a half, DJ KEVIN TOS hails from Long Island, New York. His unique and eclectic sound was derived from years of Dj’n bars and nightclubs on Long Island, in New York City, and the Hamptons as well as what he described as an infinite number of Weddings and Sweet 16s. Working private parties helped Kevin master the art of MC’n, giving him the ability to rock a party solo on the mic as well as the wheels simultaneously. In NY, Kevin did not stop at just Dj’n. His ability to fill a club evolved into him becoming one of Long Island’s biggest club promoters. He has worked with some of the industries biggest names such as FatMan Scoop, Ray J, Cascada, Bret Michaels and many more. Since crashing into Jacksonville, he has taken his experience in the bar and nightclub industry to becoming a part of the management team at Whisky River and becoming their resident Dj every Friday night. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DJ'ING? 13 Years and counting. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED WHILE YOU WERE DJ’ING? I’ve been offered undergarments as a tip to play a song. Bras and Panties! I’m sure that wouldn’t be weird to any other DJ but its the types of woman that I get to offer me them, you would not believe. This isn’t a solo occasion either, this is multiple times. Jacksonville women are FREAKY! I guess I could take them to Platos and get some actual cash for them.. WHATS THE MOST ANNOYING SONG PEOPLE ASK TO HEAR? Right now.... The Wobble, I don’t get it! Honestly do people actually YouTube 28 ACTIVE

this song to learn the dance? I mean Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, OK.. The dance is in the song. Even the WOP I can understand, but what is the Wobble? At Weddings... Paradise by the Dashboard Light that song is like 7 minutes long of nonstop Meatloaf. GROWING UP WHO WAS YOUR ROLE MODELS OR INSPIRATIONS? I grew up in NY with Radio Djs like Spin Bad, and Funk Master Flex. Hip hop was a huge influence over every music scene in NY - NYC, Long Island and the Hamptons. We didn’t see an influx of House music into the club scene until the 2000’s where Djs like Vic Latino and Theo took the Jersey Shore and Hamptons clubs over which inspired me to collaborate between the two genres and diversify my style. WHERE DO YOU DJ AT? WHAT NIGHTS? I am currently the resident Friday Night Dj at Whisky River. It is the best venue for my style of dj’n. Coming from a Wedding, Bar, and Nightclub background, Whisky River lets me explore other genres like Party Rock and Disco, where other venues would focus more on Hip Hop and House. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE NFL TEAM? NY Giants Baby!! G-MEN! The Big Blue Wrecking Crew! I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WOULD YOU ONLY PLAY? Mashup Top 40 Remixes. House/Dance tracks of the most popular mainstream tunes on the radio. Something about the driving ACTIVE 29

beat of house to make people dance while singing all the vocals of their favorite tracks on the radio. WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING RIGHT NOW? I’d immediately get into some early 2000’s NY Hip Hop. The older the better, there are a tons of classics that came out of this era of music. Biggie, Puff Daddy, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Fat Joe, FatMan Scoop, Ja Rule, etc... All crowds vibe to this set, old or young the classics never die. WHICH TYPE OF EVENT WOULD YOU PREFER? WEDDING OR NIGHTCLUB? They both hold a place in my heart. Nightclubs are my niche, something about the lights and fog and the hundreds of people screaming their lungs out. Keeping the energy level wherever you want it, turning the dance floor into your puppet. Yet I do miss dj’n Weddings. Making a lasting memory for a young couple is priceless. No one remembers how good the flowers or cake were, but they remember what a blast they had all thanks to the Dj. Unfortunately I haven’t dj’d a wedding since moving to Florida but I wouldn’t mind getting back into it soon. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE SHOT? I’ve bartended almost as long as I’ve been Dj’n. Moving to Jacksonville, I was introduced to the vast array of flavors Three Olives Vodka has to offer and I’ve switched to Bombs as my shot of choice. Berry, Grape, Cherry, Rangtang... The list goes on. So Ladies if you wanna hear that song request, instead of taking off your panties - just bring me a CHERRY BOMB! Extra Chilled!!! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ARTICLE IN ACTIVE MAGAZINE? Diana’s Dish. I don’t get to watch E! or TMZ too often cause of work so it’s a quick and easy way to get all of today’s gossip. I dunno if it’s the curlers but she’s pretty haaaawt. 30 ACTIVE

eye candy EASY WAYS TO BRIGHTEN YOUR EYE COLOR

By Michelle Axtell • www.MichelleAxtell.com

Time and time again I have women ask me what shades of eyeshadow/ eyeliner should be used for their specific eye color. Of course, there are no rules with makeup, other than to have fun! However, there are a few simple techniques that can be applied to each eye color to help enhance them. The best part about these techniques, is that they're easy. One simple eyeshadow switch, or eyeliner change-up, can make the world of difference when it comes to brightening your eye color. In this article, I have laid out the shades to complement each eye color, along with products that are currently available to stock up on. 36 ACTIVE

FOR GREEN EYES

Eyeshadow: Gold and coppery brown; plum and purple. Soft peach, warm-pink, or rose tone on the crease and underneath the eye. This application will ensure your green eyes shine even brighter. Beautiful mustards and warm peaches will give also give instant brightness. Pair these shades with a deep brown for depth and balance. Apricot or champagne hues are good choices for highlighting the brow bone without looking over done. It has been suggested that you should not wear green shadows with green eyes, however, light green can be very flattering when applied sparingly Eyeliner: Espresso-toned Sephora Collection: Pro Lesson Palette: Green Eyes: $28.00 What it is: A makeup palette and illustrated lesson to help you create two looks: a khaki natural eye and a black-purple smoky eye. This kit contains: 6 Eyeshadows in Universal Beige, Black Purple, Dark Green, Burgundy, Olive, and Ice Beige; Eye Pencil in Coffee; 2 Illustrated Lessons (day/night)

ACTIVE 37

FOR BLUE EYES

Eyeshadow: Warm bronze tones, rust colored shadows will make your eyes look almost electric. Pairing the rust shade with a teal gray, will deliver an instant dreamy effect.Taupe, gray, violet, purple (purple and shades of lavender—using these will give the eye a true gray blue tone). Blue shadow done right, like a dark navy blue, can help bring out the cool tones in your eyes without a super matchy-matchy element. Silver showcases blue eyes in a sexy, sparkly way like no other color can. Eyeliners: Grey or charcoal eyeliners, highlight blue eyes without being overpowering the way black sometimes can. Sephora Collection: Pro Lesson Palette: Blue Eyes: $28.00 What it is: A makeup palette and illustrated lesson to help you create two looks: a beige natural eye and a navy smoky eye. This kit contains: 6 Eyeshadows in Porcelain, Navy, Retrochic, Catherine, Soft Beige, and Bright Silver; Eye Pencil in Gri Gri; 2 Illustrated Lessons

38 ACTIVE

FOR BROWN EYES

Eyeshadow: Slightly shimmery taupe, bronzes, champagnes or gold-colored shadow. Soft, sheer greens bring out the many dimensions. Shades of grey, purple, plum, and burgundy. However, be careful to avoid the “black eye” look that some purples can give. Rich navy and midnight blues give brown eyes a sexy dramatic effect. Eyeliners: Blue eye liners, in blue green and bluish-purple shades. Blue eye liners can sometimes make dark eyes appear a lighter shade of brown. Sephora Collection: Pro Lesson Palette: Brown Eyes: $28.00 What it is: A makeup palette and illustrated lesson to help you create two looks: a brown natural eye and a purple smoky eye. This kit contains: 6 Eyeshadows in Universal Beige, Warm Gray, Medium Brown, Midnight Kiss, Soft Gold, Peach Beige; Eye Pencil in Chocolate; 2 Illustrated Lessons

RMANCE WITH JERRIAN SANDERS

CORE TRAINING is essential to the development of an athlete. It is responsible for the transfer of energy between your upper and lower extremities. A strong core can help with balance, agility and speed to name a few. Core stability also aids in protecting the lower back from injury that is common for athletes that weight train or perform movements on all three planes. A sound core program should consist of stability training, flexibility training and strength training components. Stability exercises are used to support the spine. Muscles controlling spinal stability are trained to adapt to stress placed on the back. Being that a back can move in multiple planes a program should be designed in which the athlete performs movements in all 3 rotational planes the sagital, coronal and transverse planes. The sagital plane is a vertical plane that divides your body into right and left halves. Side planks, side leg lifts and side crunches are all exercises that will help with movements performed along this plane. The coronal plane is the vertical plane that divides your body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) halves. Basic crunches, leg lifts, and bent knee lifts are all exercises that will train along the coronal

ACTIVE 47

plane. The transverse plane is the plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) halves. Shoulder raises, pull-ups, and push-ups are examples of some exercises you can do that will work along the transverse plane. Flexibility in the core is important because it maintains a stable spine. When an unexpected force is applied to the spine it can cause inflammation at a vertebral joint, which leads to back pain. If the deep spinal muscles in your body are flexible, it will allow you to maintain a stable spine. Stretching the lower back, hip extensors, and back extensors will aid in keeping the core flexible. Push-ups with your hips to the ground, hamstring and quad stretches are all good for flexibility. Core strength increases efficiency of movement and is the power output for the primary muscles, as well as the peripheral muscles. Core strength training should follow the same principles as any other strength program which consist of progressive overload, periodization, and specificity. 48 ACTIVE

An athlete should begin a core program in a stable environment. Laying on the floor preferably. Core muscles usually fatigue fast which makes them more susceptible to injuries. For this purpose you want to make sure that you start the athlete off with body weight exercises and gradually progress them to weighted exercises. The repetitions can be high and evenly distributed throughout the core. Crunches, toe touches and leg raises are all good exercises to use as you can add medicine balls, dumbbells or kettle bells as the athlete gets stronger. Core training in an unstable environment is the most functional way to train. Most of the time we are competing in an unstable environment that requires us to use a lot of different muscles at one time. Wood choppers with medicine balls, single leg –single arm rows and cannon ball launches are all exercises that can be used to engage different muscle groups at one time in an unstable setting. Everything you do athletically starts with the core. The stronger you make your core the better you will find yourself moving. If you have lower back problems consult with a physician before beginning a core program. ELITE healthy FITNESS babies BY NOHA SOLIMAN

HEALTHY BABIES BEGIN WITH HEALTHY MOMS! The foods you eat before you become pregnant are important to help you and your baby be as healthy as possible. Eating well now will ensure that your baby gets all of the vitamins and minerals required in the early weeks of development. FOLIC ACID is a vitamin needed both before you conceive and during pregnancy. It helps reduce the baby’s risk of developing a type of birth defect, called neural tube defect, which affects the brain and spinal cord. This is why it is so important to make sure you’re getting enough folic acid every day before you get pregnant. Cooked asparagus, cooked spinach, romaine lettuce, kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, orange juice and sunflower seeds are some excellent sources of folic acid. Since it is difficult to get enough folic acid from food alone, women of childbearing age should take a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement that contains 0.4 mg of folic acid before becoming pregnant and in the early weeks of pregnancy. IRON During pregnancy, your requirement for iron increases. This extra iron will be used to make red blood cells that carry oxygen through your own body and to your growing baby. Feeling tired may be the first sign 50 ACTIVE

that you are low in iron. Start to build up your iron stores now by eating more whole grain and iron-enriched breakfast cereals, lean meats, dried peas and beans, dark green vegetables, dried fruits and nuts. To help your body better absorb the iron from plantbased foods, eat them with foods that are high in vitamin C such as berries, tomatoes, peppers, orange juice, broccoli, cauliflower, and potatoes. At the same time, avoid tea and coffee (during and after meals) as they decrease the amount of iron that your body absorbs from plant-based foods. CALCIUM helps keep your bones and teeth strong. Get used to eating lots of calcium-rich foods now. Milk and fortified soy beverages are excellent sources of calcium and they also contain vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium. Other calcium-containing foods to include in your diet are: yogurt, cheese, orange juice with calcium, almonds, canned sardines or salmon with bones, legumes and leafy green vegetables. Other things to think about when planning a healthy pregnancy: WEIGHT A healthy lifestyle with regular, enjoyable physical activity and healthy eating will help you achieve a healthy body weight. CAFFEINE Caffeine crosses into the baby’s blood when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Instead of caffeinated beverages, drink water, milk, soup and fruit and vegetable juices before and during your pregnancy. HERBAL TEAS Most herbal teas, such as camomile, ginseng, licorice, lemon balm and fennel, should be avoided during pregnancy or when you are trying to conceive a baby because there is not enough research to determine if they are safe. Herbal teas that can be consumed in moderation include ginger, bitter orange, orange peel, Echinacea, peppermint and rose hip. Have no more than 2-3 cups of these safe herbal teas per day. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS Aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame-potassium are used in many foods such as soft drinks, desserts, yogurt, salad dressings, chewing gum and candy. Although evidence shows that aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame-potassium are safe for pregnant women, it’s wise to use them sparingly. Read food labels to see if artificial sweeteners have been added. Avoid using saccharin and cyclamates. MERCURY AND FISH Pregnant and breastfeeding women and women who may become pregnant can particularly benefit from the nutrients offered by fish. However, because the developing fetus is also at risk from mercury exposure, it’s important to be aware of what types of fish are a good choice for frequent consumption and which should be eaten less often. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and women who may become pregnant are advised to limit consumption of frozen/fresh tuna, shark, swordfish, marlin, orange roughy and escolar to 150 grams per month. ALCOHOL, SMOKING AND OTHER SUBSTANCES Avoid alcohol and these other substances if you are planning a pregnancy and when you know you are pregnant. Check with your physician before using any medications. Smoking during pregnancy is one cause of babies being born premature, smaller and at a lower weight. Try to quit smoking now, before you become pregnant. Look for smoking cessation programs in your area.
