SAM KOUVARIS WJXT & SPORTSLINE.COM

A friend of mine was sitting in a sports bar during a recent Jaguars road game with some “real” Jaguars fans. Not just casual observers but guys who have been supporters of the franchise since the beginning. When the opposition took the lead, my friend was at first appalled and then amazed when these fans were rooting for the enemy to win and win big. Why? “Because we’ll sacrifice this season to get rid of Jack Del Rio,” was the quick response. And that’s how it goes in the NFL. Coaches have a shelf life in the league. Long tenured coaches are a rarity anymore. Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Tom Landry, all legendary coaches whose stays in Miami, Pittsburgh and Dallas spanned decades are now the products of a bygone era. They won, sure, but they also lost. And that was acceptable by their owners who had confidence that ACTIVE 9

they were “rebuilding” and would make the team competitive in the near future. Again. And they were right. Partially because of the unlimited money that owners could put into their clubs and partially because those guys were actually great coaches. Nobody called for their jobs. Players and fans respected what they could do and owners were sometimes the object of scorn for being “cheap” or “lazy.” That all changed with the salary cap. It leveled the playing field for just about everybody when it comes to acquiring players (maybe not when it comes to making money) so owners have a shorter attention span and less patience when it comes to winning. They want results and based on how teams are built now, about 5 years is the time frame for a coach to prove whether he can produce a champion or not. Right about that time in Del Rio’s tenure, the Jaguars looked to be an ascending team. A road playoff win at Pittsburgh and an emerging quarterback looked to be the building blocks for a championship run. Del Rio and David Garrard were rewarded for what seemed to be their potential with new contracts. Which never panned out. Garrard never got any better and the Jaguars free-agent moves backfired. Having gone from good to very good, the team never got to great and started to back up. “A coach rarely survives a quarterback change (Leftwich) or a retooling of the roster once let alone twice,” Del Rio admitted before the 2011 season. But in fact, Jack had done just that. “We’re going to be a good team,” he declared more than once in the preseason and into the regular season, saying it with such confidence that it was hard not to believe that he really believed it. Little things, most self inflicted, 10 ACTIVE

kept the Jaguars from being somewhere near .500 early in the season and as the team’s won-loss record became more lopsided, the calls for Del Rio’s job got louder. In the end, it’s Wayne Weaver’s call regarding Del Rio’s future. While Weaver can be emotional, he’s very measured before making any kind of major personnel move. He’s actually concerned about the people working for him. Contrary to some opinions, Weaver is not cheap. And he wants to win. He also wants to put people in the stands and generate some excitement for his team. Del Rio isn’t doing any of that. It’s a results oriented league. And if he’s not winning, “potential” doesn’t keep any head coach on the sidelines in the NFL.

TOP 10 MONTHLY LIKES I want to make a Facebook account and the name will be Nobody so when I see stupid crap people post, I can Like it. And it will say “Nobody Likes This.” Facebook is like jail: you sit around and waste time, write on walls, and get poked by people you don’t know. The teacher asks Timmy, “Why is your cat at school today?” Timmy says, crying, “Because I heard my daddy say to my mommy, ‘I’m going to eat that pussy when the kids leave.’ so I’m saving him!” Touch it gently, put two fingers inside, if it’s wide use three fingers, make sure it’s wet and rub up and down. Yep that’s how you wash a cup. Wife: honey I want you to whisper dirty things in my ear! Husband: kitchen, living room, dinning room, patio. In the past, when you were angry with someone you fought them. Now you just delete them off Facebook. That’ll teach ‘em to mess with you. I never get jealous when I see my ex with someone else, because my parents always taught me to give my used toys to the less fortunate. I changed all my passwords to ‘incorrect’. So my computer just tells me when I forget. No I didnt trip The floor looked like it needed a hug. Why is there a show called “When animals attack”? It should be called “When stupid people go near dangerous animals.” Have some good Facebook status’s you want me to submit into the monthly column?! SHIA TAKEN DOWN IN VANCOUVER!

Transformers star Shia LaBeouf is no stranger to getting in trouble. The 25-year-old actor was involved in a street fight in Vancouver where he is currently filming. Shia and another man got into an altercation inside a bar called Cinema Public House. Both men were kicked out of the venue and the arguing continued in the street. It became physical as the shirtless, bellied man punched Shia to the ground. TMZ obtained a video of the fight. It features the man beating down Shia and then as he gets up, he attempts to chase after the attacker while being held back by a friend. The video shows Shia’s friend telling him that he needed to “lay low”. Shia was arrested back in 2007 for not wanting to leave a Chicago drugstore as well as being involved in a serious car accident in 2008 where he ended up needing hand surgery. The fight may not have been long but it sure did look like Shia could’ve used some help from Bumblebee.

ASK AN ATTORNEY Q:

A:

I have worked hard my whole life and I have accumulated certain assets, which I was going to leave to my children in my will. I am a self made man and don’t really trust others to manage my money but an advisor recently told me that I should not wait to give my wealth away. I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot by giving away money, which I may need as I age but I also know doing nothing can cost you. Now is the time to implement a strategic comprehensive plan for your family’s wealth transfer. Transferring wealth now eliminates the future appreciation of those assets from your taxable estate. For this reason financial advisors and attorneys who practice estate planning have long recommended that taxpayers transfer their underutilized wealth as soon as possible. Asset values, particularly for real estate, are still artificially depressed. As the value of assets recover and begin to grow, so do the current, and future, tax burden. We expect the value of personal and business assets to increase in the near future. Also, your loved ones can use those underutilized funds to increase the economic benefit via reducing debt, as capital to launch a new business, take advantage of other opportunities, or simply enjoy additional tax savings via maximizing their yearly contributions into retirement investment accounts. ACTIVE 25

As it stands now, the 2010 Tax Act will expire automatically at the end of 2012. The current estate tax exemption is 5 million dollars for individuals and 10 million per couple. This will drop to 1 million dollars per person. The lifetime gift tax exclusion of 5 million will also drop to 1 million dollars. The window of opportunity to transfer wealth to family and loved ones is narrowing. Also, knowledgeable estate attorney’s can utilize these same strategies to transfer business assets, which are currently devalued to reduce transfer taxes. Transfer taxes can be significantly reduced or avoided by transferring businesses by gift, or sale, to family members or into certain corporate entities while allowing you to continue to maintain control. Additionally, the most effective leveraging techniques are enhanced by a near historic low in interest rates. Allowing sophisticated financial planners to transfer even more wealth without gift taxes reducing the body of the estate. Very truly yours,

christy Greene

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS TAKE THE RED BULL FLUGTAG TAMPA BAY TITLE 125,000 Cheer on as Fearless Water Bound Teams Attempt Flight TAMPA, FL – Even a stern northeastern wind off the channel couldn’t keep 125,000 Floridians from crowding into the bay to witness 38 teams unsuccessfully attempt to defy gravity in their homemade flying machines at the second Red Bull Flugtag Tampa Bay. The scene was packed with everyone from the young to the young at heart with roaring cheers heard for miles. Judged on distance, creativity and showmanship, these wacky, fun loving crews inevitably all took the plunge, but it was returning 2008 champions who surfaced with the title. From Tampa Bay Watch in ’08 to Willy Wonka’s Amazing Flying Flugtag Adventure, they continued their winning ways to take the title yet again. PLUNGING TO THE PODIUM With a hint of luck, a swirl of spirit and the most famous chocolate connoisseur behind them, there was no stopping these reigning Tampa Bay champions. Willy Wonka’s Amazing Flying Flugtag Adventure flew their scrumdidlyumptious flying machine into the history books with two wins. “We weren’t sure we could fly and the pressure as reigning champions

was incredible,” said team pilot Keith Humphrey who was joined on the podium by his trusty Oompa Loopa crew- Kevin Riley, Dave West and Christopher Elmore. “We went good distance despite the winds and are just so excited to take the title again.” Team BigStuff took Back to the Future to a whole new level when they launched their Danny McFly inspired DeLorean off the flight deck and into a second place finish with high creativity scores from the judges. The U.S.A Team wasn’t pittin’ the fool today when they took the podium for third place and a special place in Judge Evan Longoria’s heart as his favorite team of the day.

The crowd did more than cheer as soaring crafts and future Top Ten Best Crash List nominees rolled off the flight deck. The SMS voting for “People’s Choice Award” went to Stumble Force, a local Tampa team. “We just went all out with everything and just had fun,” said James Bell team member. “We knew what the people wanted to see and put as much work into marketing our team as we did our craft.” GOING THE DISTANCE The teams had to blow away the panel of celebrity judges, including Evan Longoria (Tampa Bay Rays), Lexi Thompson (youngest LPGA winner), Ryan Nece (former NFL player), Jaime Edmonson (PlayBoy Playmate), MJ (93.3 Morning Show host) and Tarah Gieger (female motocross rider). “It was fun, it was exciting, we saw creativity and craziness with teams just going out on a limb enjoying life and having a great time,” said Ryan Nece. “This is what Red Bull Flugtag is all about and I was honored to be a part of it.”

We went good distance despite the winds and are just so excited to take the title again.”

Tampa Bay was the only US Red Bull Flugtag this year, but this wild and crafty competition has deep Austrian roots with the first flying day held in Vienna in 1991. Since then, more than 90 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the world from Rome to San Francisco. While the winds were strong today the world record stood even stronger, with a distance of 207 feet hich was set last year in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Some are more exciting than others (my favorite has always been by MAC, specifically for their holiday-only mini-brush sets), but they are usually always a great deal and tend to make great Christmas gifts. I have been told that I’m the hardest woman to shop for, so here’s a tip: buy me a cosmetic holiday set and feel confident that you’ve got a fool-proof present! DO'S & DON'TS DO bring in pictures with desired cuts, colors, and styles. This way you will be on the same page with your stylist DON’T rely on your stylist to be able to read your mind .Most stylists have an ability to some what translate your thoughts into a finished product. However we are not miracle workers, so bringing in pictures for ideas is a great way to communicate the direction you ACTIVE 39

would like to go towards. This is key especially when you are planning on a major change.

DO some research when looking for your stylist and salon The easiest way is to ask people with a style you like where they go. It also helps to go to the salon and check it out. Just because you walk into a salon doesn’t mean you have to get your hair done. Take time and look around, ask for a service menu. This way you can get an idea of what their prices are. Chat it up with the receptionist and inquire about who has been there the longest or who works better with your hair type. You can also see what kind of hair comes out of their chairs. Finding the right stylist is nearly as difficult as finding the right mate. The stylist- client relationship involves trust, communication and loyalty and, just like dating, finding a stylist can be awkward and expensive repairing a botched cut or a color mishap can cost you hundreds of dollars, not to mention your dignity.

DON’T be afraid to ask about discounts. Complimentary consultations are standard practice, and many local salons offer special events , free treatments on select day, free bang trims and client loyalty programs. Be sure to find out what the salons policy is for unhappy clients, will a stylist fix the problem for free? How long do you have to determine if you love it loathe it.

DO schedule a consultation… always!!!! To ward off color drama, schedule a consultation to discuss the full range of color options and choose the right one for you. This should help you avoid that last minute decision to spring for all over color your budget only allows for highlights. Also ask about touch-ups between regular appointments and half head color if you just want to hide the grey.

DON’T get your hair done professionally then try to recreate the look at home. Professional stylist are trained and experienced so when you go in and have them do a double process blonde that looks like a million bucks, don’t go and buy a box color and expect it to look remotely the same. All that will do is cost you double the next time you go in to see your stylist. And they will just be frustrated with you and not feel inclined to work so hard on your color.

ELITE dieting FITNESS 101 BY NOHA SOLIMAN

CALORIE CONTROL The biggest factor in a diet is calories in versus calories out; your total calories will determine if you lose or gain weight. Eating too many calories will lead to fat gain. But if you don’t eat enough calories you will not gain lean muscle. Setting a target calorie intake and counting the amount of calories you eat each day is vital to losing fat and gaining lean muscle. MACRONUTRIENT MANIPULATION While your total caloric intake is the most important diet factor, the ratio of protein to carbs to fat can dictate whether the weight you gain/lose is muscle or fat. A diet that contains 80% of calories from carbs, 10% from protein, and 10% from fat will produce different results than a diet containing 40% of calories from carbs, 40% from protein, and 20% from fat. STAY HYDRATED You should drink plenty of water every day. Try to drink at least eight glasses (or 64 oz.) of water per day. The benefits drinking water provides are optimal hydration as well as a feeling of “fullness” without added calories. Sometimes people will mistake thirst for hunger. Because of this, staying hydrated can also prevent overeating.

42 ACTIVE

QUALITY CONTROL Choose fresh, wholesome foods over prepackaged, processed foods which are loaded with preservatives— especially sodium and saturated fats—and often have high amounts of sugars, such as high fructose corn syrup. You will be amazed at how fast you can lose fat just by packing meals from home rather than purchasing fast food or packaged foods. INSULIN CONTROL Insulin is the “storage” hormone. Controlling insulin secretion by choosing low GI carbs can decrease fat gain and increase fat loss. Stable blood sugar levels also improve energy levels and ones mood. ADEQUATE PROTEIN In order to gain lean muscle, you need to eat enough protein to sustain the creation of new muscle proteins. You may not be used to eating the amount of protein, but once you get into the groove, you should not have any problems and will enjoy how full and satisfied you feel. ESSENTIAL FATS Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are vital to the proper functioning of your body. Dietary fats got a bad rap due to the low fat diet fads of the 80s and 90s, but in reality, EFAs are needed by the body and are part of a healthy diet. Eating fats does not equate to getting fat. In fact, most EFAs help support the fat burning process and maintain a lean body. Do not be scared to eat good fats. Also, be sure to supplement with a quality EFA product, such as Fish Oi. Women do not need to diet much differently than men, which is the reason why women tend to do very well on a low carb diet. We recommend women follow a low-carb (not no carb) diet to lose fat and gain toned, lean muscle.

ACTIVE Fashion BY MIA

THE FASHION FOCUS IS ON FOR FALL! MIA Styling has picked some pieces that are n Inteman sure to be your objects of affection this fall. Melissa perator O Owner + ng They will not only win your hearts but will keep MIA Styli you and your style one step ahead of the rest. MIA Styling took a moment this month to hone ACin on the hottest looks for fall. Let’s get this started!

MIA Girl Crush #1: The Bow Blouse: This is definitely fall’s luxe ladylike fashion for the season. Why? It’s a fun and feminine twist for fall. Not only is a bow blouse fresh, chic and sleek, its tie-neck screams CLASS! The blouse skims over the body’s curves and feels as easy as your go-to button-down shirt. Another benefit, the bow blouse has no gaping across the chest. LOVE! Paired with a pencil skirt, the bow blouse (also called the tie-front blouse or the secretary blouse) is prim and proper, evoking a retro, Mad Men-esque office style. Not into the pencil skirt? No problem! Wear it un-tucked with skinny jeans and heels. Now go ahead, rock it.

MIA Girl Crush #2: The Wool Cape One of MIA’s favorite trends for fall 2011 is the cape. There is nothing more captivating than the wool cape. Why? Because there is no clothing item that will perfectly transition your wardrobe into the colder months than a classic cape. Worn over a favorite pair of jeans or dressed up trousers, this is one silhouette that never goes out of style. Who does casual cool? You do, and you will do it better than most. So hush now, and follow my crush. MIA Girl Crush #3: The iPad Bag Alright ladies, get ready for this one. Have you been looking for a replacement for your boring iPad Case? Well, no need to look any further. Now, you can carry your haute iPad in style with Diane Von Furstenberg’s, Harper Connect Leather Day Bag. This bag, which I have had the privilege of touching and feeling, has a sleek secured zip-pocket made for every geek girls ‘”can’t live without toy”, her iPad! This bag comes styled with signature hardware, a front closure, a metal and leather chain strap and a removable tassel (but why would you remove it?) So basically, you will be connected wherever you go. Yet another classic by the utmost of class, DVF. We bow down to you.

MIA Boy Crush #1: Get Horizontal Horizontal stripes are so hot right now. I found some at GREAT price points. Just so you know, every guy looks good in a bold chest stripe. It has an athletic, collegiate and vibrant feel to it. Stripes are snappy and graphic and the bold chest striped sweater were made for men, so MIA Styling gives it a 10! MIA Boy Crush #2: Blue Steel Gentlemen, it’s all about the blue face watches this fall. You will see everything from the new Daytona Rolex, which is over $15K, to a Timex, which is $75. Don’t worry, it’s not like wearing a bright color on your wrist, but I must tell you that THIS color looks good with everything! The blue face looks best on the black watch, so go out and get yourself one. It’s a trend that is sure to be top notch. MIA Boy Crush #3: The Skinny Mini ties are an inch to an inch and a quarter wide. Until now, they used to be considered a little bit punk, but there’s an irreverence to them now. You’ll be seeing a lot of the traditional patterns like the preppy stripe. The skinny cut and colors are so vibrant it has a younger appeal to it. It would be cool to put this tie with a navy suit and a blue shirt. Suit it up or jean it down and you’ll be ready for a night out on the town. ~ www.miastyling.com ACTIVE 53

CELTIC THUNDER HERITAGE TOUR 2011 You do not need to be Irish to appreciate the amazing range and the diverse talents of Celtic Thunder. The performance at the Times Union Moran Theatre touched the heart of all who attended. Keith, George, Neil, Emmet and Daniel were amazing and entertaining. The lighting and special effects from the fog machine gave all a feel of Irish Lore. The show was amazing, electrifying and moving. When 13 year old Daniel Furlong sang “ Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, the crowd was silenced in awe of his talent. When Emmet came to the stage to sing romance filled the air. His voice was powerful and beautiful. Neil with the amazing voice and many talents on guitar was fun and entertaining. What a talent. Keith’s interaction with young Daniel on stage was fun and comedic. One of my favorite songs of the evening was George singing 500 Miles with the crowd clapping and singing along. Keith, incredibly handsome and talented, almost stole the show with his voice, multiple talents on guitar and keyboard and playfulness with the crowd. Celtic fans are called Thunderheads. All were very happy to sing along with their favorite performer. This is one Thunderhead that cannot wait for them to come back. The Artist Series continues to bring the best shows to Jacksonville. SOUTH PACIFIC

South Pacific was first performed on Broadway April 7, 1949 . It is a brilliantly told story of love, loss and gain amid WWII. The Rogers & Hammerstein’s gem was performed at the Times Union Center Jacksonville. The Cast sang and acted superbly. The show centers around two love stories that are heartbreakingly beautiful. Love stories that combat prejudices and war itself to survive. Marcelo Guzzo as the dashing French exile Emile de Becque has you falling in love with him when he sings “Some Enchanted Evening“. His voice is a thing of splendor. His heartfelt feelings have you wanting him and his beautiful children to be loved by Nellie Forbush, played by Katie Reid. Nellie, a nurse from Arkansas, finds herself on an exotic island during World War II and falls in love with Emile. Katie’s incredible voice and playful antics while performing “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair“ was a joy. Shane Donovan as the strong but vulnerable Lieutenant Cable sings with a voice that gives you chill bumps. He falls in love with Liat (Hsin-Yu Liao) a beautiful island girl. Bloody Mary played by Kathy FoyMahi - Sings “ Bali Hai “. This haunting hymn of reaching for your dreams has you mesmerized by her voice. This is a rare gem of a musical. Go to the show and bring someone with you and you will fall in love all over again. The Artist Series has brought the Theatre fans of Jacksonville a rare treat in South Pacific. Purchase your tickets at www.artistseriesjax. org and enjoy the show. Look for me in the crowd ~ Evelyn Kormondy

DERRICK SIMMONS ACTOR, STUNTMAN

The acting career of Derrick Simmons began at the early age of 10. He attended Harbor JHS of Performing Arts in Harlem, NY, and Talent Unlimited where he majored in drama. An agent saw him in a showcase and sent him out on his first audition. Years later, Derrick was inspired to become a stuntman. His love and passion for the Arts continues to grow. His performance as ‘Billie Keane’ on HBO’s gritty prison drama “OZ” was a strong statement of his undeniable talent. ACTIVE: We know you started to do film at the age of 10. What was your first movie? DS: It was “Enemy Territory.” I was 13 and it started opening more doors for me. ACTIVE: What is the hardest stunt you’ve ever done? DS: I was hit by a car going 40 mph! I have jumped off of bridges, done flips off buildings, all of it!! 64 ACTIVE

ACTIVE: We loved the show OZ! How was it working on the show? DS: It was a great time. I played my first gay character ever, it was something to get used to, but I did it and the show was a hit. I remember when people would catch me out, and they would come up to me and be like, “Hey, you’re that gay guy on OZ”, and I was like “No. I am that gay actor on OZ.” He laughs. ACTIVE: We know you have done a lot of work with Tyler Perry. Who else have you worked with that was cool to be side? DS: I’ve worked with so many people. Michael J Fox , Hale Berry, Ben Stiller, it’s always good times, and memories in the books! ACTIVE: Is this your first time in Jacksonville? DS: Yes it is! I love it, it’s nice! Takes about 20 minutes to get everywhere, it was crazy because when I came into town at the airport, I knew I was doing an interview with “Active” but I didn’t really know much about it, and then I saw the magazine coming out the Airport! I love it. ACTIVE: Where is the coolest place you have filmed? DS: Hawaii, it was so beautiful! ACTIVE: It’s been great talking to you Derrick. Remember when you come to Jacksonville who are you looking up to find out what’s going on? DS: The Active Magazine all day! We want to extend a big thank you to VisitJacksonville.com and Valerie Denise Jones Events and Promotions. ACTIVE 65

UNSIGNED ARTIST WITH T-ROY FROM 93.3

BEAST BOY ACTIVE: Okay, let’s get this started today. I’m sitting here with? BB: Beast Boy from Vendetta Nation. ACTIVE: How did you get started doing music? BB: My parents had a band so I started playing instruments at 5 and developed a passion for the mic after watching his father entertain. ACTIVE: Why do you think it’s so hard for artist to get discovered in Jacksonville? BB: Because artists are scared to leave the city...get the *bleep* outta Duval. Even Jesus wasn’t a profit in his home town. ACTIVE: What is your current project? BB: The No Square Tour, promoting my last release Vendication III. Simultaneously working on my next release The Ruler. The title has a double meaning, Ruler of Vendetta Nation as well as The Ruler for independent artists, the measuring stick of success. I’ve released 3 mix tapes in 1 year. ACTIVE: Who are your major musical influences? ACTIVE: Jay Z, Michael Jackson, 2pac and BB King. ACTIVE: What is some of the best advice you were ever given? BB: Scared money don’t make money. As an independent rapper you must have financial backing. The amount of money for promo, marketing, production, wardrobe, mixing, mastering etc etc is way beyond the reach of an average income. 66 ACTIVE

ACTIVE: What was your most embarrassing moment? BB: Forgetting my lyrics on stage. As an artist you never want to not know your material. ACTIVE: What was the craziest thing you’ve ever done? BB: Pursuing my music career. It’s literally against all odds in this business. ACTIVE: What were your greatest disappointments in your life? BB: Too many to name, life is a disappointment in itself. You spend your entire life trying to acquire riches and once you gain it your youth is gone, your spirit is down and life isn’t what it seemed. ACTIVE: How has social media influenced your career? BB: It made me dumb my material down. The way they portray success is illusion. ACTIVE: What is the worst job you ever had? BB: Buffalo Wing Wings, spinning chicken in sauce. ACTIVE: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? BB: Lincoln Park. ACTIVE: What is the most rewarding thing about creating a new album? BB: Pleasing the fans. ACTIVE: How can people get in touch with you? BB: VendettaWhatsBetta.com or google Vendetta Nation. ACTIVE 67

UNSIGNED ARTIST WITH T-ROY FROM 93.3

ACTIVE: Who is Jasmine Rhey? JR: Jasmine Rhey is a lover of life. I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a singer, a songwriter, a performer, a student of life and a lover of God. I love to perform, write songs, record songs, travel, learn languages and cultures and laugh. ACTIVE: How did you get started doing music? JR:I have always loved singing. I was not born a great singer. I began voice lessons at 12 years old and joined a chorus called the International Peace Performers. I performed in a lot of restaurants and festivals with my voice coach as well as the chorus. ACTIVE: Why do you think it’s so hard for artists to get discovered in Jacksonville? JR: Jacksonville has no music industry. There are no opportunities for artists to really see how the music business works and therefore, they think that they have reached the climax of their career just by getting on the radio one time. It takes a lot more than what Jacksonville has to offer to get into the real music business. ACTIVE: What is your current project? JR: I am working on creating a buzz for Jasmine Rhey in major cities in Florida. I am pushing a few singles to DJs, networking and growing my fan base as much as I can. I want to do as much as I can on my own before I have any contracts involved so my main focus is getting my worth up. ACTIVE: Who are your major musical influences? JR: Michael Jackson for his complete range—singer dancer and humanitarian. ‘N Sync for their 68 ACTIVE

sound and cohesiveness. Celine Dion for her perfect pitch and ability to capture an audience just by standing on stage. Eminem for his lyrical ability and his strength to be himself and express feelings that some might be afraid to show. Tupac for his contemplative lyrics. Ne-Yo for his songwriting and his voice is gorgeous. ACTIVE: What is some of the best advice you were ever given? JR: “Let go” meaning be myself and not be afraid of the judgments that may follow. ACTIVE: What was your most embarrassing moment? JR: I don’t really get embarrassed. I take life as it comes and deal with embarrassment well. I guess in middle school just being me was embarrassing because I was always made fun of for being bigger than all the other girls and hairy and ugly. That was embarrassing. Ok yea...one time at some event we had to dress up nice for in middle school my mom had me dressed in some white pantyhose and I didn’t shave my legs yet so I was embarrassed out of my mind with the long hairs sticking out of them. ACTIVE: What was the craziest thing you’ve ever done? JR: I don’t do crazy things. ACTIVE: What were your greatest disappointments in your life? JR: Not being self-confident for such a long portion of my life. I ACTIVE 69

am still working to gain complete confidence in myself. ACTIVE: How has social media influenced your career? JR: It is the main reason I have the fan base I have right now. Facebook has been huge in my career. I have two pages and I love being able to speak personally with my fans. Twitter is very helpful as well. It allows you to speak to people who might not in any other situation speak to you. ACTIVE: What is the worst job you ever had? JR: A hostess at a breakfast restaurant in Atlanta. I had a hostessing job at another more classy restaurant in the evenings, but this restaurant was not cool. I was working with 12-year-olds I think. ACTIVE: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? JR: Michael Jackson. ACTIVE: What is the most rewarding thing about creating a new album? JR: Listening to the finished product in my car with the windows down and being able to say “I did that!” ACTIVE: What was your worst subject in school? JR: English, and now I love English and can’t stand when its used improperly. When I started studying Spanish and French and Arabic, I became more aware of all of the little details in languages that make them unique and it brought me closer to my own native language. ACTIVE: How can people find you and your music? JR: facebook.com/ JasmineRhey2, twitter.com/JasmineRhey, youtube.com/JasmineRhey soundcloud.com/JasmineRhey2, reverbnation.com/JasmineRhey
