FORGET CREDIT CARDS — NOW YOU CAN PAY WITH YOUR FACE
A new way of contactless payments Pay-by-Face has arrived in Los Angeles. Pasadena company called PopID is rolling out the American’s first payment system based on facial recognition at a smattering of restaurants near its headquarters, including mom-and-pop operations such as Daddy’s Chicken Shack and regional chains such as Lemonade. The system is simple: A customer signs up on their phone, takes a selfie and adds cash to their Pop Pay account from a credit card or bank account. When it comes time to pay for their meal, they look into the camera of a PopID tablet or kiosk, the cashier verifies their name, and money is withdrawn from the account. For restaurants, the service is fast and cheap, assuming customers sign up for it. Easier ordering can speed up lines, and PopID is offering lower fees to process each payment than other payment processing or credit card companies. august 2020

STARTUP’S PLASTICREDUCING REFILL SYSTEM GOES MOBILE IN CHILE
Chile-based startup Algramo has evolved the concept to include mobile refill units after a successful pilot program last year. This effort is focused on reducing plastic consumption by using refillable containers for products like dish soap and washing detergent. The mobile unit consists of a vending machine attached to an electric tricycle, which moves to different parts of the city. The reusable containers are equipped with an RFID code that provides discounts on future purchases, which helps encourage citizens to participate. “We offer a solution where we decouple consumption from packaging waste,” said Algramo’s Brian Bauer. “There’s a lot of that packaging that ends up in the environment, ultimately, in oceans or other places it shouldn’t be.” august 2020

EZONYX BIO TECHNOLOGIES UNVEILS NEW ECO-FRIENDLY BIOPOLYMER MATERIAL
The Los-Angeles, California-based company Ezonyx Bio Technologies has unveiled Earth Plant Compostable Biodegradable (EarthPCB) ecofriendly biopolymer resins, as part of its sustainable efforts. Ezonyx has started the commercial manufacturing of EarthPCB resins, which are expected to be available to the customers from August this year. EarthPCB is said to be an eco-friendly, earth and plant-based, biodegradable, renewable, sustainable and compostable biopolymer material that is available for most industries worldwide as a replacement for toxic, petroleum-based plastics in the food, beverage, cosmetics, medical device and durable consumer goods industries. The biopolymer material, which is FDA Title 21 food contact compliant, will help address the issue of new long-term waste. The BPA-free EarthPCB is 33% lighter weight in density compared to other polymers, as well as safe from microwave, freezer and dishwasher. august 2020

SPRAY TURNS 3D OBJECTS INTO DISPLAY SCREENS
A new process turning 3D-printed objects into interactive displays using a spray-on material has been developed by a team at the University of Bristol, England. The team were inspired by the work of graffiti artists to develop the technique — ProtoSpray — which creates displays on a wide variety of surfaces. The ProtoSpray technique works by using a novel combination of sprayable electronics and 3D printing. Objects are 3D-printed with conductive plastic, then sprayed with electroluminescent paint. The lead researcher, PhD student Ollie Hanton, said that the process should allow people to build interactive objects of any shape, “even if they don’t have expertise in these materials”. According to Hanton, his team’s work takes 3D printing one step further, printing “not only plastic but also other materials that are essential for creating displays”. august 2020

SEPHORA PARTNERS WITH PAYMENT PLATFORM FOR SHOPPABLE WISH LISTS
Sephora is leveraging the wish list feature from global payment/shopping app Klarma, a leading global payments and shopping provider, in the US. Customers can save and add products from any online store to their Sephora wish list. They can also follow and share Wish lists curated by brands, influencers, Klarna’s shopping experts and others. Internally, Sephora will have access to information such as top wishlisted items and items that are frequently wish-listed during certain times of year to support merchandising and assortment decisions that more closely align with what customers are shopping for, with a goal of increased conversion. Sephora will also be able to use the feature to create wish lists related to certain events, such as weddings, holidays and graduations.
