TENANTS IN MILES PLATTING ARE ‘S’MILES’ MORE SATISFIED! Key results from the Miles Platting Tenant Satisfaction Survey 2018 In June/July of this year, The Renaissance Consortium (Miles Platting) carried out the Annual Tenants’ Satisfaction Survey, designed to explore tenants’ views on a variety of issues including satisfaction with the local neighbourhood, opportunities for resident involvement and the top issues they encountered within the estate. Here are just some of the key results to show exactly what tenants thought and how much improvement has been made in certain key areas since 2007 when we first took over the contract. Key results from the Tenant Satisfaction Survey 2018 (with comparisons to last year and the year Renaissance began managing the PFI)

Other key findings 1. Satisfaction in Miles Platting is significantly higher than national averages. Satisfaction levels are also significantly higher than the average for local public services (78.2% UKCSI July 2017) and the leading companies in terms of satisfaction such as Amazon and First Direct! 2. Just under nine in ten tenants say they are satisfied with the local neighbourhood and, encouragingly, of those who have reported antisocial behaviour to us, seven in ten (71%) are satisfied with how their case was handled. This is a slight drop from last year and will be monitored closely over the next 12 months. 3. Satisfaction with customer service remains high with almost all (95%) saying they found staff helpful and that they were satisfied with the outcome of their enquiry, in line with last year. 4. Tenants felt the biggest problems in their local neighbourhood were off-road motorbikes, drug use/dealing, litter/rubbish and car parking with more than three in ten tenants feeling these were a very or fairly ‘big’ problem. Those

concerned about these neighbourhood issues were not confined to a particular area/estate or demographic. The proportion concerned about off-road motorbikes has increased by 10.9% on last year and will be explored further, particularly as there has been an increase in concern about this area year on year. 5. The majority were satisfied with the opportunities we provide for resident involvement. Here are just a small selection of tenant’s comments about the improvements they’ve seen in Miles Platting: “Any repairs have been done quickly and satisfactorily by very pleasant workmen; very satisfied” “All Adactus staff are doing a good job for me: thankyou” “The Adactus groundsmen do a brill job, when it comes to the up keep of the estate, you constantly see them gardening and clearing rubbish, the guys are always friendly and pleasant.” miles platting spotlight | 3

Winstanley Nursery How to Make Terrible Twos Easier Compliments of Winstanley Day Nursery, Winstanley Rd M40 7WN

“Terrible twos” is a term that refers to a period in a child’s social development associated with a very defiant and unruly behaviour. The tendency to say “no”, hitting, kicking, screaming, biting, ignoring rules, and other forms of defiant behaviour usually start around the age of two years, hence the name. That said, some children can exhibit signs of unruly behaviour as early as after their first birthday, but some kids can start acting out after they turn three. Tantrums and other forms of defiant acts can be stressful and difficult to control, but not impossible. Here are simple tips to make terrible twos easier.

Firm “NO”

• Toddlers are used to getting what they want and they expect you to accommodate all their wishes whenever they need something. In most cases, kicking, screaming, and tantrums occur when a child doesn’t get what he or

8 | miles platting spotlight

she wants i.e. when parents say no. In order to make their children stop crying, parents give in. Huge mistake! You should not undermine your own decisions and choices just because you don’t want your child to cry and scream. If you want to make terrible twos easier, then

practice “firm no” policy i.e. when you say something is not allowed, stick by your words even when your child starts crying. Children are smart, they know crying works. Repeat this strategy and you’ll notice an improvement.

Hitting People Is Never Okay

• It is not uncommon for toddlers who are going through “terrible twos” phase to hit someone. First, you should bear in mind their reaction is not a true reflection of their feelings for you. Many parents feel discouraged thinking their child hates them. Hitting is a negative reaction through which child expresses disagreement and tries to persuade you to oblige to their wishes. As soon as your child hits you or tries to do that get down on their level, hold their arms gently to

their sides and say “we do not hit people.” Don’t try to explain why we don’t hit people because toddlers have the short attention span. Stick to your message and be consistent. Do the same for biting. One thing you shouldn’t do is to spank your child to teach him or her not to hit others.

Other Things to Do

• Connect and trade experiences with other mums or dads. • Get enough sleep and make sure your child has a regular sleep pattern too.

BOTTOM LINE Terrible twos are frustrating for parents and children, but it can be easier when you know what approach to take.

At WMB Winstanley Day Nursery, we are always ready to support your child go through this life phase and we are always ready to make it a loving, caring, enriching and happy childhood experience for your child.

Visit our website at WWW.WMBCHILDCARE.CO.UK. We look forward to hearing from you and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 0161 205 7933. We would love to welcome your child into our family!

Community gardens Our community gardens have had to compete with the baking hot sun that we have experience in the last couple of months! •

Chippenham Road beds are now fully allocated with three new starters in July. The gardens will be seeding overwinter vegetables for the Community Grocers.

Ridgeway Street is having a revamp with solar lights and looking at doing an art project on the brick wall getting the area ready for volunteers on the six available beds.

Holland Street have been enjoying their DIY automatic irrigation system and presented to Brunswick residents their ideas for what make a community garden project work – the visiting group were really impressed! The external beds have been covered to discourage weed growth which can easily be bedded when our partner project re-starts in Autumn half-term.

If you would like to get involved or have any questions please speak to Rosemary Grant-Muller on 0161 203 2650. miles platting spotlight | 13

Pat’s Gardening Corner

I do hope you enjoyed the fabulous summer months we’ve had. As I write I can’t believe its September already, where has the year gone? If like me you spend the summer busy in your garden it’s easy for the months to just slip us by ……. As summer slowly drifts into autumn there are things we can do to pro-long colour in our gardens:• Keep deadheading summer plants such as dahlias and geraniums this will prolong flowering. • Keep up weekly feeds. • Replace bedding plants that are finished with vibrant violas, pansies and asters. • Introduce some fancy foliage – this will provide longer lasting colour. Autumn is a time when we need to prepare our gardens for the coming winter months ahead, there are a number of jobs which can be done now which include:• Trim hedges before the onset of winter to keep them compact and bushy from ground level. • Check your lawn and make sure any weeds you sprayed last month are dying. Repeat the treatment if necessary. Aerate the lawn with a garden fork and scatter lime lightly over it. This sweetens the soil after many years of lawn food application. Rejuvenate tired lawns with an autumn feeding to ready them for the onset of cool winter weather. • Gather any fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps and shredded prunings and layer them in a compost bin. Turn periodically with a garden fork to allow air to circulate and feed organisms, and decompose the organic matter quickly. Don‘t overload your compost with one particular ingredient – maintain a mix. 14 | miles platting spotlight

• Transfer the leaves that fall on your garden and lawn to the compost bin on a regular basis, otherwise they will smother your plants and grass. • Divide evergreen perennials. Lift them from the soil, divide at the root and replant into well-conditioned soil.

Autumn Garden Giveaways* Keeley was one of our lucky winners from our summer giveaways; she was quick off the mark and bagged herself a selection of flower seeds and a metal wall plant holder – WELL DONE KEELEY! There are plenty of Autumn garden giveaways……….. • • • • • • • • •

Q&A Q&A

A couple of great gardening questions in the mail bag this week… Q. My back lawn has suffered over the summer months, how can I repair it? A. Grass is pretty robust and does recover well. You can mix some grass seed with some finely sieved compost and cover the bald area, water in well and protect from birds with some netting.

Q. When is the best time to plant spring bulbs? A. Anytime between October and December before the first frosts. Avoid any that are damaged, shrivelled or feel soft and go for plump, firm bulbs. Aim to plant within a week or they’ll start to sprout. Plant two to three times their own depth and around 2 bulb widths apart making sure the top of the bulb if facing upwards. Replace the soil after planting, breaking down any large clumps and firm in gently, making sure there are no air spaces around the bulbs.

Summer Photo competition Congratulations to MANDY NASH who was the winner of our summer photo competition. Mandy was up early to snap this sun rise over miles platting and bags herself a £20 high street voucher. Well done Mandy!

Don’t forget the wildlife this autumn and winter Encourage birds into your garden by hanging out a couple of bird feeders; you can buy wild bird seed at most supermarkets or garden centres. Fat balls in the coldest of months are a favourite and a welcome treat!

…..Pause for thought Consider your garden as ‘AN EXTRA ROOM’ - it deserves as much consideration as the inside of your house. Please care for your garden and keep it tidy - IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! miles platting platting spotlight | 15 miles
