Where to Go?

YPAC

.…………………..………...

YPAC run Youth and Play Sessions in Miles Platting and Collyhurst. We work with young people from ages 6-19, though will work with older young people as well! Summer has been a really busy time for us with lots of changes in our organisation, as well as lots of activities going on. We ran some taster sessions for our junior club, including Sports, drama and Graffiti art. We also took the group away for three days to Wales on an outdoor residential activity. They did Gorge Walking, canoeing and Raft Building (which amazingly didn’t fall apart) as well as some late nights spent at the beach building fires from driftwood, eating marshmallows. Fortunately the weather was great so we could enjoy swimming and playing in the sea.

YPAC are part of a project with three other youth work organisations from across Manchester called ‘Home is Here’. It’s a project about belonging and challenging some of the different narratives that make young people feel disconnected from Britain. One session at St Georges, we had 40 young people across Manchester sharing a meal cooked by Young People who come to our Friday group. It brought up loads of similarities and differences with young people and created lots of things to talk about as we work together. September has seen three new additions to our team, Kenny, David and Shannon. Kenny is our North Area Lead worker and will be

developing our work in Collyhurst, David Is going to be working with us in Collyhurst as well, working on detached work sessions. (Detached work is where two youth workers will try to meet young people on the streets and develop work with them there). Shannon will be working on Tuesday and Thursday clubs in Miles Platting as well as some detached work in Collyhurst. All our sessions are open access, and young people can drop in at any time. There will be registration forms for parents to fill out at each session; these are for us to ensure the safety of the young people in an emergency and to help us to keep the activities free. YPAC are part of the East Manchester Youth and Play Partnership, a group of 12 organisations offering sessions to young people throughout the week. Registering with one of the 12 organisations means that you can become a member and access activities run across the week! If you want more information about activities we run, then get in touch with us on 0161 834 5665.

Winter Wellbeing with Manchester Cares

Physical Activity Referral Team (PARS) New gentle exercise class for Miles Platting

Health & Wellbeing

For many of us, winter is a time of high heating bills and wearing as many layers as possible. Icy pavements, dark nights and shorter days can make the weekly food shop seem daunting and with Manchester’s streets, buildings and skyline rapidly changing, although it’s lovely to have Strictly Come Dancing and Great British Bake Off back on our screens, it can be a worrying time. At Manchester Cares, we are launching our Winter Wellbeing project, across the City of Manchester and are offering support over the coldest months of the year. Throughout the year our community network brings together younger and older neighbours to share time, skills, friendship and laughter. As part of Winter Wellbeing we can support those over 65 by:

Church of the Apostles Miles Platting Every Thursday 1-2pm £1 per session (Referral only) For people who may suffer from Coronary heart disease, respiratory conditions, cancer, diabetes, joint pain or balance and stability issues. Ask your GP or health professional for a referral to PARS where you will receive an individual consultation to review you physical activity needs.

• Delivering a blanket or warm item of clothing to your door • Connecting you with organisations that can help reduce your bills and offer benefits and insulation advice • Arranging a small grant, of up to £100, to help if you are struggling to keep your home warm or need a winter coat • Inviting you to our 15 free Social Clubs each month, and other activities close by • Introduce you to a young professional for weekly visits for a chat and a brew We may knock on your door soon to see how we can help you stay warm, active, healthy and connected. We’d love to hear from you and have the opportunity to meet you. If you would like to call us for more information or to arrange a date for us to visit, please call… Amy on 0161 207 0800 or email amy.saunders@manchestercares.org.uk

Need support getting back on track? Motiv8 can help...

Are you aged over 25, living in Greater Manchester and not in employment or training? If so, we can help you get back on track. We will support you with a personal action plan that is unique to your own needs. Your issues could range from debt and financial hardship, homelessness, domestic abuse, physical health, mental wellbeing and alcohol and drug dependency - and many more besides.

Childhood is the most rapid period of growth and development. From birth to adolescence, children go through many changes physically, mentally, and emotionally. In this life stage, growth and development are largely dictated by a lot of factors such as their environment, family, school, friends, and ultimately their exposure to screen time.

By helping to improve your health and wellbeing, self-confidence, self-esteem, finance and employability skills we will improve your chances of accessing training or finding a job.

Just enough screen time can actually be beneficial to your child’s learning. However, what happens when kids spend too much time in front of the TV, computer, or tablet?

Poor sleep quality - In a study done on children aged 3 to 17 years old, it is evident that children with a higher amount of screen time are more likely to sleep poorly. This is a direct effect of screen time on children’s sleep quality, which manifests through restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, sleep disturbances, and trouble falling asleep among other detrimental effects. Behavioural problems - In the same study, a secondary effect of increased screen time is behavioural problems (internalising, externalising, peer problems) due to poor sleep quality. For children aged 2-6 years old, it is common to develop short attention spans and poor emotional management with too much screen exposure. Obesity - Obesity or being overweight has been linked to screen and media exposure for a long time, perhaps ever since the television became a must-have fixture in the home. Children who spend too much time in front of the screen have less physical activity through traditional play. Increased energy intake is also an evident cause of obesity since children often eat mindlessly while watching shows or videos. Moreover, obesity can also be related to lack of sleep, which is a direct cause of increased screen time. Long-term consequences - Children who are exposed to screen time too early and too much are more likely to develop long-term consequences, such as behavioural problems or imbalances in the brain. This is due to the slowing down of signals (neurotransmitters) in the brain as an effect of too much screen time. Language delays - Infants younger than 18 months may experience difficulty in learning words. Giving them an educational app is not enough for them to learn how to communicate. If not stimulated appropriately with actual interaction, infants may grow to develop language and speech delays.

CONCLUSION

For busy parents who have a million other things to do, giving their child a tablet or a mobile phone may be the only way to keep their tots busy for a few hours. It is the millennial version of parking their child in front of the television with snacks, and for most parents, it’s an easy way to get them some quiet time. However, by limiting media and screen exposure, you can protect your child from the harmful effects of too much screen time. miles platting spotlight | 13

Pat’s Gardening Corner

As another long British winter begins, it’s the thought of those first spring flowers pushing up through the ground that gives us something to look forward to – and hope for another fine summer to come. So if you want a blaze of colour next spring now’s the time to get planting... Getting bulbs into the ground now gives them a chance to charge over winter, ready to burst into spectacular colour in the New Year. Plant the right mixture and you could be looking at a kaleidoscope of colour from January all the way through to June – and of course they’ll be back every year, growing and multiplying with each season. Spring bulbs have a range of flowering times. You can choose bulbs with different schedules for a succession of colour or pick ones which flower together for a fabulous display. Dwarf Iris, Snowdrops are all late-winter flowering, popping up in Jan and Feb. Appearing in early to mid-spring are most varieties of narcissus, tulips and hyacinth. The large daffs flower from early Feb to April. Finally, 18 | miles platting spotlight

• Pick a dry still day to rake up fallen leaves; don’t put them on the compost heap, as leaves break down in a cold process, whereas a traditional compost heap breaks organic matter down in a warm/hot process. Put them into a leaf composter, or make leaf mould. • Jet wash pathways that have become slippery with algae.

Following requests from some residents at Naylor, Gunson and Landos Courts, we have put up some bird nesting boxes in the large trees in the communal grounds – we now need your help in identifying possible visitors! Please let me know via your Caretaker which of our feathered friends below you manage to spot (you can refer to the bird chart here to help you). I will then report back in Spring Watch about any new fledglings we may have.

in late spring, alliums join in the party. Most varieties of these prefer full sun so bear this in mind when planting. Although it’s easy to think that the garden is something to be wrapped up, put away and left until next spring, there are lots of things that can be done now to ensure your garden is ready for the new gardening year ahead….

Winter-Watch comes to the towers

• If you have any decorative plant pots that aren’t frost proof empty them of all soil and store them in the shed, greenhouse or garage. • Keep an eye on the weather forecast and cover shrubs that are likely to be damaged by frost with garden fleece, sacking or an old light blanket. • Leave the old growth of tender plants unpruned over the winter months. This will help to protect the central crown of the plant and take the brunt of any frost damage. If plants are cut back hard in autumn new growth could be damaged by frost.

Don’t forget about our winter wild-life throughout the winter months... Encourage birds into your garden by hanging up bird feeders and fat balls – a tasty welcome treat!
