For the Over 50’s Age Friendly Miles Platting The Age Friendly Miles Platting board celebrated its first anniversary in November 2017. Consisting of local residents and partner organisations, it has had a busy year working in Miles Platting, researching how age friendly the area is and how things can be improved to support people who may feel lonely and isolated. This has involved talking to people at community events via the Tales of Miles Platting project, interviews with groups of older people who live in the area and undertaking a postal survey with Adactus to all their residents aged 50 and over - Many thanks to those people that sent the survey back to us, you shared with us some really interesting views and comments and gave us suggestions about how we can make the area more age friendly. We are now working with partner organisations to look at your responses and how we can put these into practice. We have developed an action plan and have detailed maps of all the communities’ resources; we will share this information at events in January 2018 and give you an update in the Spring issue. The board manages a local investment fund where people can bid for up to £2k to deliver an age friendly project. 12 projects have received this funding this year; these are: The Theatre Trippers Group run by Mike Bishop - They now have a membership of over 30 people and visit local theatres together twice a month, many of the group hadn’t been to see plays for many years and love going out to see shows now.

Age Friendly DJ Ged received funding to set up his mobile DJ service; you may have seen him at local events at the library. He does local parties and functions and has been a great success. We funded Sycamore Surfers IT training for people living in one of the areas sheltered schemes, residents learnt how to use the Internet, send emails and Skype their relatives. Butler Court received funding for Tai Chi classes; these are available for all and run every Thursday 2-3pm. This is a form of gentle exercise and really helps with balance and strength. The Butler Court Film Club has been set up and will show its first film in December. They have a film licence which means they can show feature films and blockbusters in their community room. The Church of the Apostles Friday Group received funding to set up a luncheon club and regular activities such as chair based exercise, dancing and pampering sessions. Everyone is welcome to attend - they meet every Friday from 10am onwards. We have worked in partnership with North Manchester FM to set up a training programme for budding radio presenters and broadcasters, 4 men took part in the training and now host a monthly vintage radio programme on the third Wednesday of the month from 10am -12pm; they are always looking for guests!

For the Over 50’s The Creative Connections project led the research on Tales of Miles Platting - you may have shared a local story or memories of growing up in the area. These stories will be developed in future writing and music workshops - look out for performances next year! Victoria Square residents, supported by the wardens working there, got funding to organise regular local activities for the 160 people who live in the dwellings Nelson Court residents have come together to set up the Nelson Court Sports Club they meet in the communal facility to play games, go on trips and play walking football; everyone living there is welcome to join in. A newly funded project has just been opened by the Lord Mayor - the Dementia Cafe at Trinity Methodist Church welcomes carers and people living with dementia fortnightly on a Wednesday afternoon. The board are currently reviewing a range of new proposals that include writing workshops, craft sessions, a new luncheon club, and plans for a large celebration event in the New Year. Everyone can get involved! Please contact Jude Wells for more information vie email at Jude.wells@mmu.ac.uk or by phone on 07973 973186.

A Spotlight on….. DJ Ged As you will already know, Ged is now established as the Age Friendly DJ for the area and is going from strength to strength regarding bookings and types of functions Added to that, Ged now finds himself behind a desk mic in a radio studio as a volunteer presenting his own weekly programme entitled “Ged’s Lucky Dip” which is broadcast every Monday between 4 - 5pm on North Manchester FM 106.6 Miles Platting Age Friendly recently funded radio presentation courses for people who were interested in training to become local radio presenters, and an initial four (Dave, Steve, Geoff and Ged) were all trained and broadcast “pilot” shows. As a result, they are hopefully all about to gain their own shows, Ged being the first to test the waters in earnest it seems! The training sessions (and subsequent broadcasts) are delivered at the Communications Academy on Rochdale Road, which is quite handy for local volunteer presenters. Ged’s light-hearted show is so called as it includes a vast variety of music genres and covers many decades (the first few shows included music from Dr. Feelgood, Johnny Johnson’s Bandwagon, Caro Emerald, Ronnie Hilton and James Last to name just a few as an example!). The show also promotes local items of interest, events and interviews with local people and organisations. At the time of writing three shows have been completed...all “live” and have been much appreciated. If you have any items of interest and/or events coming up, please email at gedreek@outlook.com and Ged will try and include them on future shows. In view of this, please give as much notice as you can, as the Lucky Dip Show is only broadcast on Mondays at this time. Don’t forget to tune in! How would YOU like to become a volunteer radio presenter like Ged? Since the initial group have been trained, there are still people who have expressed an interest, so if you would like more details, please email Jude Wells on Jude.Wells@mmu.ac.uk or phone her on 07973 973186 and she will try and organise more training sessions. More female presenters are required if possible, so come on girls don’t be shy. miles platting spotlight | 5

Sporting activities on the day included BMX bike riding, football, rugby, athletics and boxing. The national football museum also hosted a stall with items of historical memorabilia. “We were blessed with good weather on the day which meant that the event

that were able to attend and put on activities; the boxing was especially popular and we hope to be able to put on some regular sessions in the future.” If there is a particular sport/activity that you would like to see take place in Miles Platting, then we want to know about it!

Halloween Fever On the 31st October Halloween celebrations were in full swing at Vic Mill Hut, with an after school party from 3:30pm-5:30pm. It was a brand new event for this year in Miles Platting as part of the 10 year celebrations of Adactus working in the area. The event was perfectly timed, providing something for the kids to do before going trick or treating, there were lots of fun activities planned and music that got the evening started; not to mention the gorgeous hotpot! Dress code was fancy dress with the best 3 getting some top prizes, it was a very tough decision however as we had over 40 children all looking scarily good. This was just one of our FREE events in the community this year, watch this space for the magical Christmas Cracker coming up!

And a BIG thanks to you…. Thelma Mc Grail would like to say a BIG thanks to everybody who contributed money to help pay for urgent repairs to the roof of St Cuthbert’s Church. Through the car boot sale and an evening of entertainment at the Church, a total of £602 was raised! 8 | miles platting spotlight

Holiday Fun & Food – Halloween Week In order to combat hunger and boredom in the half term school holidays, Adactus Housing ran a 4 day Holiday Fun & Food event with a spooky Halloween craft theme! The week was a huge success, 12 families registered, the average number of children to attend over the 4 days was 18, and the average age of the children to attend was 6. On the first day, the children agreed team rules and what they wanted to achieve throughout their sessions. Each day the group were given breakfast and a hot cooked meal. They completed activities related to craft and food including making bats, spiders, witches and pumpkin carving! Millie (aged 8) said she most enjoyed “the things we made, the games we played and painting my hands!” Mia (aged 5) said she “enjoyed playing with the other children”, and Junior (aged 4) said he “would like to make superhero’s!” - Something that we will look to do next time! To help run the activities over the 4 days, Adactus worked with partners and volunteers from a number of areas, including The Church of The Apostles, The

Community News Mothers Union and Fare Share food. Due to the huge success of the event Adactus have now welcomed help from the parents of the children who attended! We have now formed a Holiday Fun and Food group and have planned the next event to take place in the February school half term. Kelly Bond, Breathe Officer for Adactus Housing Group would like to thank everyone who attended, volunteered and who helped plan the week for their hard work during the Holiday Fun & Food Week. “We can’t run these sessions without the help of the parents whose children attend. Special thanks to Zoe who’s help and support was priceless!” If anyone would like further information with regards to the next planned week next year – please contact Kelly Bond via email at Kelly. bond@adactushousing.co.uk or by phone on 0300 111 1133.

BIG Money for Community Projects Adactus Housing has now awarded £25,000 this year to worthy community projects across the Miles Platting area. The projects were voted on by a panel of residents from the Adactus 500 involvement group and a huge response was received once again. The funding has supported 15 projects in total. These projects include exercise sessions, a love food, hate waste campaign, a tea dance, gardening project and the hugely successful holiday fun and food sessions that ran over the summer months and the October half term benefitting many families in the area.

Get Connected at St George’s” is the last grant to be awarded money this year. The project is using the funding to pay for tablets and Wi-Fi access at St George’s Community Centre hoping to create a community hub. They will also be running an intergenerational genealogy project engaging with everyone who uses the centre. Samantha Hornsby, Enterprise and Funding Officer at Adactus said “We’ve been able to support some great bids with this year’s BIG Fund. Well done to St George’s and all the successful applicants” For further information on any of this years projects or advice on how to apply for funding next year please contact the BIG team on 01942 267703. miles platting spotlight | 9

Crime Trapped Police, local authorities, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, young people and an MP have launched a campaign to stop criminal gangs from grooming children and vulnerable adults to commit crime. The campaign, known as ‘Trapped’, aims to raise awareness of criminals who are grooming and exploiting children and young adults to commit crime on their behalf. Offenders take victims from urban areas to the countryside or coastal areas to sell drugs. Sometimes victims are trafficked closer to home, and are moved around Greater Manchester. As well as drug dealing, victims are sometimes asked to carry out other forms of criminal activity such as arson, violent offences, storing firearms, holding money, criminal damage or assault. Offenders use coercive behaviour to threaten and exploit victims and their families. Some signs that a young or vulnerable person could be ‘Trapped’ and need help are: • • • • • • • •

Young people going missing and travelling to seaside or market towns School absence or missing from school Money, clothes or accessories which they are unable to account for Receiving an excessive amount of texts and phone calls Relationships with controlling / older individuals or groups Carrying weapons Significant decline in school results / performance Self-harm or significant changes in emotional wellbeing

Anyone with concerns either about themselves or somebody else should contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 in a non-emergency situation or report anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Always dial 999 when there is an immediate threat to life or a crime in progress.

Darker Nights Unfortunately it’s that time of the year again where the weather is getting colder and the nights are getting longer. Over the winter months we have an increase in burglaries around the residential areas. One of the main causes for this is the poor level of security in many of the properties. • • • • •

A house without lights on is very appealing to a burglar, so make sure to switch on a light or get a light timer if you go out in the evening. Burglars like peace and quiet, so disturb them by making sure your alarm is set. A burglar also likes an easy way in to a house, so make sure that your windows and doors are locked. Make sure all of your valuables are kept out of sight (including keys). Keep bins away from windows and flat roofs, as burglars can use them to climb into your property.

For more advice and security tips, please visit GMP’s website www.gmp.police.uk. 12 | miles platting spotlight

Tower Blocks Triumph

Environment

Well done to tower block residents for their efforts to recycle more. Over the past 2 years, Adactus Housing has been working with the residents in the Miles Platting tower blocks to reduce the amount of recyclable items being sent to landfill each week.

PERCENTAGE OF WASTE RECYCLED

Thanks to this joint approach, Adactus are happy to report figures produced by Manchester City Council have shown that between April and August 2017 recycling through the 7 tower blocks has increased by an average of 16% with general waste having been reduced by an average of 44.4kg (6.9 stone) per block.

TOWER BLOCK AND TIMEFRAME FOR MEASUREMENT OF WASTE

There is still plenty of work to be done, but this is a move in the right direction. The energy saved by recycling just 1 aluminium drink can is enough to run a television for three hours! If you can think of any ways to help improve recycling for your neighbourhood, please contact Jacqui Wilson on 0300 111 1133.

Pat’s Gardening Corner

How is your garden looking, honestly? After the end of Autumn and the recent high winds and heavy rainfall, chances are it might well have got a bit overgrown and windswept. So now is a great time to get the pruning shears out and get it back into shape before the winter starts to bite. Pruning properly now can have a huge impact on how your plants grow next year. It keeps them healthy, vigorous and balanced and stops large varieties from taking over the garden. It also lets in more light into the garden which will benefit your other plants. Before getting to work, have a good look around and take stock of the garden and what needs pruning, as a general rule, deciduous trees and shrubs need a light pruning every autumn. Evergreen trees rarely need much pruning. To avoid spreading any bacteria around the garden, clean blades properly with Jeyes garden disinfectant after use. Generally, December is a quiet time in the garden and our thoughts are usually on the festive activities which lie ahead. Make some time to have a general tidy up as it will save you time in spring. • Pick a dry day to gather up any remaining leaves • Store away any patio pots that are not frost proof • Jet wash moss away from pathways • Wipe down and store away garden furniture

Thinking ahead to spring – BULB PLANTING As gardeners know gardening is all about planning and preparation. Develop a plan, decide what you want – the more the merrier. Bulbs tend to look wonderful in large groups or drifts, they are very easy to grow and most of them just want to be wintered under a blanket of soil till they push up when the days become longer. There are a few simple rules for planting, generally you place them two or three times their own size deep in soil. They are very easy, but to care for them properly they love a bit of slow release fertilizer to build up the bulb. Plant now and leave tulip planting until December.

Don’t forget to feed the birds! Don’t forget about our winter wildlife throughout the winter months – encourage birds into your garden by hanging up bird feeders and fat balls – a tasty welcome treat!

Q&A Q&A

Q. When is the best time to cut back hydrangeas and how do I know which bits to cut back? A. If you are hesitant, you can wait till early spring to cut back the plant. At that time, the new

wood will be green in color, while the old wood will be brown. You can use this rule of thumb for autumn/winter pruning too, but it is much more obvious in the spring.

Q. Is December too late to plant up some spring bulbs? A. No, as long as the ground is soft enough they should be fine
