Unity and Community in Football: Celebrating Cameroonian Heritage The charity Ensemble Manchester has received a grant of £29,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project, made possible thanks to National Lottery players, will explore the culture of Manchester residents with a Central African background, particularly Cameroon. Over a 12-month period young people growing up in Manchester will connect with their heritage, research family history, and focus on unity, sharing with the people of Manchester, particularly through a love of football. The project ‘kicked off’ with a celebration of the Cameroon National Day. On Saturday 19th May, the Victoria Mill Community Centre opened for an afternoon of family fun. Young people of the Cameroonian Community wore the colours of the national football team to take part in friendly

competitions at Park view School Football Pitch. There was an exhibition on former Glories of Cameroonian Football during 1982 and 1990 FIFA World Cup, along with face painting, a bouncy castle, barbeque and creative writing in French and English. The Cameroon National Day has been celebrated on 20th May each since 1972 when both territories of the country – English and French – became one nation. Football has continued to play a unifying role in a nation once divided. Based at Victoria Mill Community Centre in Miles Platting, Ensemble Manchester works alongside statutory and voluntary organisations to provide French classes and extra-curricular activities for young people in school and in the community. The only way is UP! In April the Jigsaw Environmental Change Team delivered a furniture upcycling session within Miles Platting, in partnership with Ground Work. The aim of the session was to encourage people to reuse old wooden furniture, giving it a new lease of life with an achievable and affordable make over. The hope is that this will reduce the amount of furniture going to landfill, enable our residents to save and to also provide residents with a range of new skills that they can use in their own home. Seven residents attended the session, each bringing along a piece of furniture they wanted to work on. Jon, from Ground Work, was able to provide an overview of the techniques needed to prep the furniture and then to paint it, using chalk paint, made from adding a chalk mixture to emulsion and costing a fraction of the amount that some retailers charge for pre mixed chalk paint! Participants took their finished product home at the end of the day. All residents said they really enjoyed the session and have been asking about when we will be running another one – a real success!! Pictured is Dot Lomax and Rose Sheridan and the group hard at work!

Information about Blood Borne Viruses (BBVs)

Health & Safety

A recent review of our Health and Safety policies and procedures has given us the opportunity to review and improve our approach to our tenants and residents who may be living with long term medical conditions, and in particular blood borne viruses. We acknowledge that there is still a lot of fear and ignorance about some medical conditions and this has led to some conditions, such as HIV, being stigmatised. We are committed to ensuring that tenants and residents living with blood borne viruses do not experience discrimination or attitudes that make them feel stigmatised. We now know more about blood borne viruses and acknowledge that the perceptions of risk that are associated with them are often out of proportion to the actual harm that could be caused. Jigsaw Homes Group is committed to educating its staff and residents about the extremely low risks associated with blood borne viruses and the simple precautions which can be taken. 1. The most common blood borne viruses in the UK are Hepatitis A, B & C, and HIV. 2. Medication for viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis have improved massively over recent years. HIV is now treatable medical condition. People living with HIV and adhering well to treatment can bring down the levels of the virus in the system to such a point that HIV cannot be passed to someone else. 3. Blood borne viruses cannot be transmitted through every day social contact, or by sharing cutlery, cups, plates etc. 4. There is often confusion about the difference between HIV and AIDS – they are not the same thing. The term HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) refers to the virus itself. AIDS (Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome) describes the situation where untreated HIV has severely

weakened someone’s immune system and has made the person susceptible to various illnesses. A person living with HIV does not have AIDS. 5. Good hygiene should be observed at all times. However no special precautions are usually needed when visiting the home of someone who is living with a blood borne virus. 6. Avoid articles such as discarded needles, faeces, or sharps. These could contain small traces of blood. In reality the risk of contracting HIV in such circumstances is extremely small. However, the Hepatitis virus is more virulent and can live for longer outside the body. If you discover such articles, contact the local authority or Jigsaw Contact Centre. 7. Adhere to general health and safety precautions at all times, and report anything out of the ordinary.

You can find out more about HIV and the support available for people living with HIV from George House Trust www.ght.org.uk 0161 274 4499 miles platting spotlight | 13

Pat’s Gardening Corner

I hope you’ve been enjoying some of the lovely sunny days we’ve had. It’s great to get outdoors into the garden after the long winter months. Gardening does wonders for your health. Not only can it help keep you fit but it’s a brilliant way to relieve stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that we are more at ease in a natural environment. The act of gardening itself releases endorphins, making us happier. If your garden is not quite the tranquil haven you’d like it to be yet, there are a few simple changes you can make. If your outside space is limited or you’ve never got into gardening – take a look at some prime plants. If you have a small space like a balcony then all you need is a few compost-filled pots and some fresh plants. The garden should be a place to escape from the stresses of modern life so add some calming elements. Some people find the trickle of a water feature or the tinkle of a wind chime very relaxing. Bamboo and long grasses are a great feature as they contribute a gentle rustling in wind. Planting fragrant plants such as honeysuckle, sweet alyssum and roses just add heavenly scents to the outdoors. Lavender is also a gorgeous-smelling plant that will attract lots of lovely pollinating insects such as bumblebees and butterflies.

Q&A Q&A

A couple of great gardening questions in the mail bag this week… Q.

my garden is looking like a jungle, I don’t know where to start - please help!

A. Once Spring arrives it’s amazing how quickly things start to grow (weeds in particular!). I’d start by strimming the grass if it’s too long for a lawn mower. When it’s shortened it will be easier for you to mow it. Before you start strimming and mowing make sure there are no large objects in the grass that will damage the strimmer or mower. Once the grass is under control, you can sprinkle weed and feed, this will condition the grass and kill off lawn weeds. Where borders are overgrown with weeds, there is no easy way to get rid of them except to give them a good hoe and pull them out from the roots. You could use a weed killer but you may not be able to use the area for planting for sometime after.

Q. I’m struggling with an aphid infestation. What are the best methods of non-chemical pest control?

A. Aphids can be a problem at this time of the year. Ladybirds are their natural predator so try to encourage them by buying or making an insect hotel. Or spray affected plants with water mixed with a few drops of washing-up liquid using a hand spray.

…..Pause for thought Consider your garden as ‘AN EXTRA ROOM’ - it deserves as much consideration as the inside of your house. Please care for your garden and keep it tidy - IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! miles platting platting spotlight | 15 miles
