Moira Corcoran A big Thank You to a big hearted Local Lady!

k Tyhan ! ou

Moira Corcoran has been helping out as a Volunteer on a regular basis at Miles Platting Community Library for over two years. She has given her time freely and has been a sterling asset to the team, helping with customers, coffee mornings and children’s craft activities to name but a few of things she has willingly ‘turned her hand to!’. A huge Thank You to Moira who has recently resigned owing to family commitments. See page 10 for details of volunteering opportunities at the Library.

Over 55 years? Looking for something to do? Do you want to get out in the fresh air, meet some new friends and have a good laugh? Fancy joining a gentle paced walking group? Miles Platting Plodders meet every Wednesday at 10.15am for a slow gentle walk either around Ancoats, often including one of the two lovely canals, or in Piccadilly, outside Morrison’s for a bus, tram or train trip to other parks around the Manchester area. On 1st and 3rd Wednesdays we meet at Trinity Church on Butler Street, Ancoats for a short circular walk. (On the 1st Wednesday we often end up at Miles Platting Library for their coffee morning which is a very short walk and a great introduction to the group if you are not sure about joining). On 2nd, 4th (and 5th) Wednesdays we meet at Piccadilly Gardens outside Morrison’s where we then continue by public transport (free if you have a bus pass!) to other parks and places of interest around Greater Manchester. On these trips there is always a stop at a cafe where you can buy a much deserved tea or coffee and lunch. Over the next few weeks we are looking forward to visiting Wythenshawe Park by tram, Uppermill by bus and Buxton by train. Here are a couple of photos from a great day we had recently at Ordsdall Hall, Salford. For a full list of walks contact Diane Aronwich on 0161 2053851 or 07950 427292, or email diane.aronwich@ ageukmanchester.org.uk. Please ring or email before attending for the first time so we can expect you.

Weekly Activities from YPAC February to April were very busy months for YPAC. Alongside the usual Youth clubs we have also run various trips and activities with young people, including trampolining. We took a group to the Contact Theatre to watch a show called Broken Beat collective that dealt with issues young people are facing through music, puppetry, poetry and beat boxing. This created some great conversations with the young people the following week around these issues. Our Thursday night Youth hub continues, and we are always open to new members coming along. The group will be working on a project up till summer and we will be opening up the hub at Church of the Apostles from 6-7 to work on this. We will then be out and about on the estate so come and say hello. Activities are open to all young people and children from Miles Platting and Collyhurst. Tuesday: Community Garden Project (years 1-6) 3.15-5:00pm @ Holland Street Community Gardens Aspire (years 7-10) 6.00-8.00pm @ St Georges Community Centre Wednesday: Everyone Can Play (years 1-5) 5:00-7:00pm @ St Georges Community Centre Thursday: Youth Hub (ages 13-19) 6:00-7:00pm @ Church of the Apostles (Ridgeway St) and then detached work around the area from 7-8pm

Money Matters

The importance of reporting changes in your circumstances

Housing Benefit entitlement depends on the circumstances of the tenant and their family, so a change in those circumstances may affect how much HB is paid, or whether it should continue. The changes relevant to a HB claim include: • • • • • • • • •

swapping from one benefit to another moving within LA area changes in income and/or savings starting and finishing work people joining or leaving the household death certain changes in age of household members (not all) amount of rent other changes that affect how much HB can be paid, for example sickness / disability / caring responsibilities • absence from the home: note the reason for absence can make huge differences in HB pay ability

The Government has recently introduced changes that will affect many Adactus tenants. It is your responsibility to report any changes that affect you to the Revenue and Benefits Unit. In April 2016 the Living Wage was introduced. This means that anyone over the age of 25 will have their minimum wage increased to £7.20 per hour. If you have benefited from this increase then you must report that change to the Housing Benefit office. HMRC have also recently increased the recovery rates of anyone who has been overpaid Tax Credits (both Working Tax and Child Tax Credits can be reduced to collect the amount owed). If you have seen the amount you receive in Tax Credits reduce then you must report this change as you may be entitled to more Housing Benefit as a result. If you are unsure if any changes will affect your Housing Benefit award then please contact Adactus on 0161 203 2600 (option 2) or 0800 234 6826. You can also make an appointment with the Money Adviser Tina Chadwick for advice. You can also contact Manchester City Council Revenues and Benefits Unit. Pat’s Gardening Corner

It’s been a strange start to the gardening year don’t you think? It felt like summer was never going to arrive when we had a last sprinkling of snow towards the end of April. Whatever the weather might think, your garden knows its summer and there is a load to do in the garden. If you’ve not done so already, give your flower beds a good weeding, it does save you time and energy in the long run if you catch the weeds early on. For the majority of us lawns make up the largest part of our gardens. Just like an attractive head of hair, a good lawn requires regular attention – and you are the hairdresser! Often a little work at the right time can pay huge dividends and ensures your lawn looks stunning. Continue to feed the lawn throughout the summer months with either a liquid lawn feed or a granular feed. There is a huge choice of summer bedding plants available this year. Use Geraniums or fuchsias for an ideal centre piece in either tubs or baskets along with some trailing lobelia for some cascading colour. Remember to feed your plants throughout the summer months to prolong blooms. Here are some tips: • Use a good compost (don’t use garden soil) • Add a slow release fertiliser to the compost when planting up, these come 14 | miles platting spotlight

GREAT SUMMER GIVAWAYS!!! • An assortment of flower seeds and seed trays • Re-useable waterproof shopping bags (can also be used to carry plants) • Rolls of garden wire (great for securing your plants) • Sprinkler hose attachment • Selection of ceramic pots (for indoor use) • Garden gloves • Outdoor planters All you need to do to get your pick of our fantastic summer giveaways is to contact us at Baker House as soon as possible. Stocks are limited so you need to be quick.

in the forms of sticks, granules or tablets • Add water retention granules to compost, they can halve the number of times you have to water • Deadhead flowers to prolong blooms Garden plants attract all sorts of bugs and diseases and it can feel like you are fighting a losing battle when unwanted pests arrive. Many of us love nature and are not keen on using chemicals.

Q&A Q&A Q.

I have a large clump of lavender that is growing too big for its present location. I want to dig it out and divide it, when should I do this and should I prune it back?

A. I wouldn’t recommend dividing lavender because it’s a shrub with a woody stem. You could try

relocating the whole plant either into a pot or somewhere more suitable in spring. Lavender should be clipped after flowering, removing all of this year’s growth to keep it compact.

Q. When should I prune Azaleas and Rhododendrons? A. These plants don’t need a lot of pruning, but a good spring trim will remove boughs that have per-

ished or overgrown in winter. Cut the dead wood back to the green.

Nature’s Best So this summer I want to share some natural remedies with you to defend against unwanted visitors. Many are home made with kitchen ingredients. There are a few basic guidelines to follow. First, if you need to treat plants by spraying, do it in the early morning or the evening. Second, always test a remedy on a small portion of a plant and wait a day to observe any results. Third, whether you are feeding plants or treating them, be accurate and use the recommended dose. When tackling bugs and disease, target only the area that needs treatment. And finally, whether it’s a home made lotion or shop bought preparation, protect yourself with proper clothing and face mask.

Milk and water for black spot – This simple spray consisting of one part cow’s milk to two parts water can be effective against black spot, which plagues roses in our sometimes warm, wet conditions. Seemingly, it changes the PH on the leaf surface, making them less susceptible to mildew and other fungal infections. Chamomile tea for damping off – Chamomile is a concentrated source of calcium, potash and sulphur. The sulphur is a top fungus fighter, so by creating a solution of tea it creates a safe fungicide. Make an infusion with three tea bags and steep for 15 minutes. Mist the seedlings using a spray bottle once they start to sprout. Crushed eggshells – to create a rough barrier that keep slugs and snails away from your plants. Copper bands are also effective around pots, giving snails a mild electric shock if they try to cross.

…..Pause for thought Consider your garden as ‘an extra room’ - it deserves as much consideration as the inside of your house. Please care for your garden and keep it tidy - it’s your responsibility! miles platting spotlight | 15
