Development

There’s a new side to Lovell’s Miles Platting Journey LOVELL has launched ‘early bird’ plots in the latest phase of homes at Platting Village. Enjoying an enviable location adjacent to the Rochdale Canal, the homes at Lockside – Lovell’s third development within the new urban village – offer something for everyone, with two, three and fourbedroom homes overlooking The Green, the central park in Miles Platting. Lots of Manchester residents have bought homes on previous phases. Homebuyers hoping to be a part of the new community can now make an ‘early bird’ reservation on selected plots at Lockside, which will give them the first opportunity to reserve when the home is released for sale. The first residents are expected to be enjoying living in their new homes in the autumn.

The launch of Lockside is part of the exciting plan to build 1,000 homes to the east of Manchester city centre at Platting Village. It follows on from the success of Lovell’s other developments here; Faraday Green, which is sold out, as well as Bramah Place, where the second phase of 35 homes is now underway.

The area has been extremely popular with first time buyers who want to invest in their own property instead of renting, plus families looking to move up the property ladder. Homebuyers will not only have a great new place to call home, they will be within easy reach of a host of local amenities including schools, Miles Platting and Ancoats’ Sure Start Children’s Centre, Victoria Mill and the sports facilities at Eastlands. Clare Noakes added: “Platting Village is proving to be an increasingly popular address in an up and coming area of Manchester. It offers all the attributes of a village, but is within easy reach of all the city centre has to offer too.” Early bird reservations for Lockside are being taken at Lovell’s sales and marketing suite office at Bramah Place, on Garforth Avenue. Alternatively, call 0161 636 0578 or visit www.lovellnewhomes.co.uk/ developments/northwest/bramah-place.

The Ancoats Dispensary Trust would like to thank the Manchester Victorian Society who hosted an event on Tuesday the 18th of April at the Friends Meeting House. Dr Michael Whitfield came up from Bristol to give a public talk about the Dispensary Movement before the NHS came into being. This was a very successful event and £300 was raised. Dr Whitfield was so impressed by the efforts of Ancoats Dispensary Trust to try and save the building that he gave all his expenses to the Trust as part of the money raised. Image below of Dr Whitfield with one of our loyal Patrons June Rosen. June trained as a physiotherapist at Ancoats in 1958 and remembers Ancoats Hospital very well. Well done to all who contributed to the St Georges Day Parade and a special thanks to the Committee for agreeing that the £702.05 raised should go to the Ancoats Dispensary Trust. A most generous offer and hope you like the photographs that Brian Stark did of the Parade itself. A great turn out and thanks to all those who carried collection buckets- not an easy task! miles platting spotlight | 5

Community News Miles Platting Community Food Project and Shop Coming soon to Miles Platting is a new community food project and shop, providing members with a basket of groceries worth around £12 for just £2.50! The food on offer comes direct from manufacturers and shops, and includes tins, cereal, chilled and frozen food, bread, lots of fruit and vegetables and toiletries. The shop is due to open early July, for one day per week (to start off with), with membership open to residents living within a 15-minute walk. The project is more than just the shop; members get a welcoming brew and can stay and enjoy cooking courses and training sessions whilst finding out about other services such as money advice, health services and help into work. The project is run entirely by volunteers who want to learn new skills and help their community. Volunteer roles include welcoming members with tea and toast, using the till and

stocking the shelves, so there is something for everyone! The project is being setup by Healthy Me Healthy Communities with funding and premises from Adactus with the food being provided by FareShare with regular donations from Tesco and M&S. And of course, the project would not be possible without the hard work of the fantastic volunteers. There will be more information soon on the opening-date and you will be able to register on the day.

The Budding Entrepreneurs The Adactus Breathe Team recently funded a three day ‘Introduction to Self-Employment’ Course in Leigh, Miles Platting and Chorley. The course was run by Banana Enterprise Network who are a leading provider of effective “Real World” pre-business start-up support at grass root level. They support people who wish to take their first steps to exploring the idea of starting a business as a potential option for work. The aim of the course was to offer support to any budding entrepreneurs who have a business idea but do not know how to get started. The course covered topics such as market research, selling skills, funding and bookkeeping. The courses were fun and interactive with participants sharing their ideas and knowledge. On completion, participants received a certificate and also took away a free USB stick that contained templates and help sheets to support them in their forthcoming business ventures. 6 | miles platting spotlight

Jayne Allman, Director of Banana Enterprise Ltd said “Over the last month we have come across some wonderful business ideas and met some great people. The self employment course offers participants the chance to gain the knowledge needed for them to make their business idea into reality.” In total, the project supported 15 unemployed people. Kerry Liburd commented, “I feel more confident approaching my business idea now. Both trainers were great and friendly. All my questions were answered with opportunity to discuss things in more detail. I am grateful to Adactus and Banana. The course exceeded my expectations”. Daniel Johnson, Enterprise & Funding Officer from Adactus said “This course is unique in the fact that participants had access to free self employment support and can come away with knowledge to be able to start their own business.”

Community News Celebrating 10 years in Miles Platting with a BIG birthday bash On Tuesday 25th April, Local Miles Platting residents joined Adactus Staff, Local Councillors, Representatives from MCC and other partner organisations at the Miles Platting Community Library to help celebrate the association’s 10th year anniversary of working in the neighbourhood. The event was a huge success, with over 100 local residents and partners attending. A time capsule was buried at 2:30pm followed by an array of fun activities for everyone there. The burial spot for the time capsule was marked with a plaque and a cherry tree, which we hope will still be going strong in 100 years when the time capsule is due to be opened. A few of the items included were the very first Spotlight magazine produced in 2007, and the latest one produced in Spring 2017, a copy of a local newspaper dated 25th April 17, the most recent Big Issue North West, blank

tenancy agreements and benefit claim forms, old and new photographs of the area and recent events, a photograph of Staff from the Miles Platting office, a brand new £1 coin – and much more! Kids form Park View Primary School came over and submitted items for the capsule, including a cuddly toy, football cards, lip balm and photographs. Following the burial of the capsule, it was all indoors for hotpot and party. Music was supplied by a Local DJ Ged and a face painter was on hand to get people in the mood for the occasion. A special performance was given by Cheerleaders from Park View Primary School at 3:30pm.

The St George’s Day Parade On Sunday 23rd April 2017, Adactus Housing Association supported and celebrated Manchester’s St George’s Day Parade alongside thousands of the city’s residents. The parade, which started on Varley Street in Miles Platting, boasted a colourful display of floats that had been decorated and supported by local community groups and organisations. Professional dancers, performers and re-enactment groups entertained the crowds that lined the streets, cheering as the parade made its way into Piccadilly. Manchester was uncharacteristically sunny throughout, so revellers basked in the sunshine as they made their way back to Bradford Road where everybody enjoyed the music and celebrations. Thelma Mc Grail, Local Resident and organizer of the parade said “Thank you to all those who were involved in making the parade great – from the people who took part in the parade, to those who help to put the day together. I would like to thank Adactus and Manchester City Council for their ongoing support each year.” Suzanne Bullock, Assistant Director of Housing Services explained, “Being a part of the St George’s Day Parade again this year was extra special. The parade characterised some of the great things we have achieved working with the local community throughout our 10 years in Miles Platting. It is satisfying to know that as sponsors, we have helped the St George’s Day Parade get bigger and better, year after year. It was a fantastic day and great to see so many participating in the parade and lining the route to watch the processions go by.” miles platting spotlight | 7

Spotlight On You Music Not Too Old To Boogie On Down Hi! My name is Ged (or Gerald if I’ve done something wrong!), and I’m enjoying a new lease of life as the Miles Platting Age Friendly (MPAF) “DJ”. After suggesting at an MPAF open day earlier last year that there was a need for music and dance for the “more mature person”, I was prompted to join the committee and was encouraged to apply for a grant for some proper music equipment. Up to that point I was using basic hi-fi (and not-so-hi-fi) music systems to provide music for parties/functions where I live at Victoria Square, Ancoats. Local residents enjoyed what I played, so it prompted me to try and “spread my wings” and hopefully provide music further afield. After a successful Christmas period at various local venues using Victoria Square’s sound system (Thank You Team), the board granted me some money and I purchased professional sound equipment with mixing deck, twin CD players, lights, microphone, speaker stands (and more recently a turntable purchased by myself ). These are now being used to positive reactions and feedback, resulting in further bookings.

Music has always been one of my first loves, and I have a vast collection of CDs and vinyl, the music covering the decades from the 1920’s (yes!) up to date. Pop, Ballroom, Party Dances and background music is the order of the day for whatever type of function, whether parties, open days, themed nights etc. I had a mobile disco back in the mid 70’s to mid 80’s, so I’m definitely reliving my younger days...and really enthusiastic about it. It is rewarding to witness people enjoying themselves as I believe in the cliché “music is a great medicine”. I also believe it’s a good thing that older people are also reliving past decades with me and can see their faces light up when they recall some of the music played...and sing or dance along. If you would be interested in hiring the equipment and my services, there will undoubtedly be MPAF contact details elsewhere in this publication...I look forward to providing you with a happy time! Ged.

Gardens Come and Join Us in the Garden Well, here I am again. The birds are singing, it’s a beautiful day; the sun is warm and shining in a blue sky. It may not be San Tropez just homely Miles Platting. I can smell the grass and the earth as it crumbles between my fingers, as I gently dig another hole for a strawberry plant. Now it’s no longer I, but we. Myself and Dot, (who has been here a lot longer than me) do the weeding, digging, seeding, planting and catering of all plant life at the Holland Street Community Garden, YOUR Community Garden. If you would like to come and either share your knowledge with us or learn more about gardening 8 | miles platting spotlight

then come and meet us. We don’t bite and we don’t want your money, just some of your enthusiasm and time to help in any way you can at the garden, either weeding, litter picking, digging or planting, we’d love to see you, so come on down and grow some vegetables and fruit with us. Plenty of fresh air and as much exercise as you think you can muster. If you decide you like us you could end up with your own raised bed. We’re here every Wednesday and Sunday at 11am – approx. 1pm. You don’t have to do 2 hours you can do whatever you can spare. Brenda & Dot.

Spotlight On You THEATRE

MIF17

It’s Showtime Late last year a new community group was started in Miles Platting and Ancoats led by Mike Bishop and Kath Bates. The idea was to start a Theatre Trippers Club for local residents who were interested in getting out and about and visiting some of our cities many theatres, especially those that offer good discounts for community groups. Since we started we have been to see about ten shows and we have many more planned for the rest of the year, we have had some great nights out with about twelve of us on each trip and many new friends have been made. Our membership has grown to over 30 people! We have been very impressed with some theatres that have encouraged our group with good discounts for good seats, and we are especially fond of visiting the new HOME theatre which used to be Corner House and the Library theatre. Another favourite of ours is our local Hope Mill Theatre on Pollard Street in Ancoats, it is a smaller theatre that puts on some great shows and we always enjoy our evenings there without having to travel far. What we do is simply enjoy ourselves and have something to look forward to. Get in touch with us to find out more; Mike Bishop Mike.bishop1943@outlook. com and Kathryn Bates 07961643781 (after 11am)

For the Over 50’s Plodding On Walking is a great way to exercise and keep your mobility as you get older. The Miles Platting Plodders is an established walking group for older people who prefer to walk at a more gentle pace, enjoying the countryside and making new friends. New members are always welcome and will find us a friendly and chatty bunch. We meet every Wednesday at 10.15am at either Trinity Methodist Church, Ancoats (every 1st and 3rd Wednesday) or outside Morrisons in Piccadilly (on the other Wednesdays). The Ancoats walks are short and easy so great for anyone who is unsure about joining a walking group, and on the 1st Wednesday we go to the coffee morning at Miles Platting Library. On the other walks we travel by bus, tram or train using bus passes for free travel to parks and places of interest around Greater Manchester. We usually stop at a cafe for a spot of lunch on these walks. We have been to some lovely destinations such as Wythenshawe Park, Heaton Park, Hollingworth Lake and Fletcher Moss Gardens. In the Winter months we visit museums and art galleries such as Bolton Museum, Touchstones in Rochdale and Manchester Art Gallery. Recently we enjoyed a canal trip from Portland Basin which was arranged by City of Trees (formerly Red Rose Forests). There will be a new walk schedule for July onwards so please get in touch to find out where we will be going. After seven years of leading the Plodders, Diane will be retiring on 22nd June and her colleague Donna Smith will be taking over as walk leader. Contact Donna on 0161 914 9623 or email donna.smith@ageukmanchester.org. uk for more details about the walks. 10 | miles platting spotlight

Age Friendly Miles Platting The aim of the project is to work with local residents and key organisations to develop a plan for the area that will help make it more age friendly. The resident led Miles Platting Age Friendly Board has been meeting for 6 months now. It has a pot of money available to fund projects and events that will help to tackle isolation and loneliness in people over 50. The board have already funded a number of activities in the area and people are welcome to come along; • There is an Age Friendly DJ Ged who has played music around the area at some of the local events • The Theatre Trippers group run by Mike Bishop • On Thursdays at 2pm there is a seated Tai Chi class at Butler Court on Gunson Street • On Fridays at the Church of the Apostles there is Friday Friends and Fellowship with activities such as dancing, pamper sessions and a 3 course lunch • We are supporting the Nelson Court residents sport association with funding for equipment • A film club at Butler Court –watch this space for future shows! • IT lessons for residents in Sycamore Court We have an exciting new project in partnership with North Manchester FM through which we have places available for people to learn how to be a community radio reporter and possibly present a radio show. We are also looking at setting up a dementia café and would welcome people’s views about this idea. Please contact Jude Wells if you are interested getting involved or have any ideas about future projects via email at Jude.wells@mmu. ac.uk or by phone on 07973 973186.

They do this by matching incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells, to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant. They also carry out cutting edge scientific research, fund specialist post-transplant nurses and support patients and their families through the transplant process and beyond. They won’t stop until they save the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant. Every penny you donate brings them closer to that day. The Anthony Nolan trust was chosen by our employees as our Charity of the Year. Each year we raise funds to support many great causes but this year we wanted to target a chosen charity that all of our employees can get behind. The Anthony Nolan Trust was put forward by one of our operatives, Anthony Fay, whose grandson Noah, has been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. The only cure for him was to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Sadly, no family members were a match for Noah and they had to rely on the Anthony Nolan Trust to search for a matching donor. A match was found and Noah’s life has been saved by a generous anonymous donor from Germany. Noah still has a long road to recovery but is currently doing amazingly well under the care of the Doctors and Nurses at the Royal Manchester Hospital. Without the help of the Anthony Nolan Trust, Noah’s story could have been a lot different. We are 5 months into our fundraising and to date we have managed to raise a staggering £2990 which has smashed our original target of £2000! This was achieved by everyone donating generously to support colleagues completing challenges such as the Great North Swim and the Manchester 10K, entering our ‘Noah Club’ by paying £10 to be entered into 10 draws throughout the year with a chance to win £45 each month; and raising £750 buying tickets for the raffle at the annual staff away day on Friday 12th May. Many local organisations kindly donated some great raffle prizes which encouraged more employees to buy more tickets! Here are some examples of our fundraising initiatives so far: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Sale of wrist bands and pin badges Football scratch cards Tomato plants sale Multiple Cake sales Dress down day each month Flower arranging for Mother’s day Slimming Club Grand National Sweepstake Potato hash supper and tombola Sale of show room furniture and accessories Oscars sweepstake Christmas Party loose change

Our amazing employees have really pulled together to make sure that we can donate a great amount of money to this fantastic charity. We still have another 6 months to go so will be working hard to try to double our target. Look out for our next update in the next issue! If you want to support this great cause you can do so by either visiting our JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/AdactusHousingGroup-AnthonyNolan or directly to the Anthony Nolan Trust by visiting their website www.anthonynolan.org 14 | miles platting spotlight

THE PLATTING PINK Memories of City and Utd from the 1940s INTERVIEW BY JOHN GILMORE WITH PETER COFFEY AND COLIN HUGHES

John. When was your first game? Peter. My first game was 1946 Manchester United vs Aston Villa, it was at City’s Old ground because Old Trafford had been bombed during the war and wasn’t ready to host games yet. The game ended two all with goals for Utd by Jack Rowley and Charlie Mitten, two big stars of the day. Colin. My first game was also at Maine Road in 1944 during the war, but I was watching the proper home team Manchester City, all the local lads back then were City fans, getting to Old Trafford, being out of Manchester, was too far to go. City won 3-0 on the day vs Halifax with the teams being made up of guest players because most players were still serving in the armed forces at this important time of the war. I recall some of the older stars of City were playing especially the star full backs from the 30’s Bert Sproston and Sam Barkas.

John. Who did you go with, how did you get there and what were you thinking, feeling? Peter. I went with my dad on the 53 bus, the journey was jovial with fans all wearing red and white scarfs and hats talking about the

stars in the team. The team was the original busby team and I recall the regular line up was Crompton, Aston (Snr his son also played years later in the European cup winning team in 1968) Carey (captain and leader very much like Kompany now at city) Chilton, Cockburn, Warner, Delaney, Pearson, Rowley, Morris and Mitten. Rowley was the star forward that could kick a ball so hard the fear was it would pop, he would be able to kick the lightweight balls of today from Platting to the City Centre. I was sat on the wall at the front of the Scoreboard end with an Oxo and a meat pie at half time as a treat from my dad. All the kids sat on the wall before being passed back at the end of the game. We didn’t sing specific songs back then just shouting Come on Utd or Up the Reds. At the end of the game we all bemoaned the missed chances to win and just like today blamed the ref for not giving penalties for clear fouls. Colin. I went with a good friend who was a few years older than me who lived nearby he was 13 or 14 called Richard Riley, we lived in Collyhurst so walked to Piccadilly and got the 76 bus to Maine Road, I was wearing a hat and scarf knitted by my Nan in City’s colours. We met loads of friends on the way and laughed about the game, as today and always as a City fan I thought City would win, I don’t ever recall thinking we wouldn’t win at home, although I have been wrong on occasion. At the ground I stood near to the front, at half

time I got an Oxo drink from the area behind the stand. I remember if you returned the cup which was made of pot you got a penny back. I remember a couple of years later the ground was that full for a City game v Blackpool because the old City star Peter Doherty was playing for Blackpool that day, he was an amazing player , myself and a few mates climbed on the Kippax roof to watch the game. Someone must have spotted us and reported us to the Police who told us to get down, we protested we couldn’t see, the police officer told us to get down and come with him. He took us to the disabled area and told us to sit down and shut up. I guess today we would have been thrown out at least and the roof is a little higher.

John. What was it like next day at School?

Colin. I remember watching them put the scores up at half time with games being lettered in your program, at full time the results would be updated with lots of fans staying to find out full time results. Peter. Players back then didn’t dive or feign injury, if they got tackled they bounced back up so they didn’t show any fear to their opposition. They must laugh when they see players today rolling around at the slightest touch. Colin. Yeah if they stayed down they were hurt and no subs in them days so they would probably hobble on if they could, goalies would play on the wing if they hurt their arm and try stay out of the way and sometimes they would score a goal which would bring a cheer from the fans. Peter recited a poem he was taught in the army before he was demobbed in March 1958 about the Munich air disaster that occurred 7 weeks earlier on February 6th 1958. An amazing poem recited proudly but you could see the pain was still there about a terrible day in Football history.

Peter. I couldn’t wait to see my friends next day, more were red than Colin thinks or remembers, we replayed the key points of the game, we all wanted to be Jack Rowley drilling the ball home or jinking around tackles like Charlie Mitten, great times and good fun. The ball was just rolled up newspapers, recycling is nothing new; if we didn’t back then you had to To interview these two do without. friends Colin. I don’t recall any reds at my school, but was an honour and Peter is younger than me, (Colin is 80, Peter is a pleasure; 79) we all laughed about how easy the game was, we played football but we also pretended their to be the brass band that played before at half memories time and after the game, marching around like of watching they did, other were singing the songs, mainly Football in they were Vera Lynn songs and other war time what at least we see as the Football capital songs. It all came together to make the game of the world were so vivid. special. Listening to how the clubs came together after the War to ensure football continued John. Any other memories? in this City and thrived creating two clubs now that are admired all around the world Peter. I recall more about that day than I do about this morning, both Colin and Peter start makes you proud to live in Manchester. laughing and agreeing.

Pat’s Gardening Corner

It’s that time of year where we want to use the garden for a little well earned R&R, maybe fire up the BBQ on a nice sunny day... However, to keep things looking nice, we need to spend a little time giving our gardens some much needed TLC. It’ll make things easier in the long run and help spread the pre Autumn/Winter workload. Tidy up ……. Brush up any leaves/debris left over from the winter months which might be blocking gulley’s in your garden and jet wash pathways to remove any slippery algae/moss. Watering …… Is essential as the weather warms up. Give your garden a big drink once or twice a week to draw plant roots deeper into the nutritious soil. Containers and hanging baskets will need watering once a day – perhaps twice a day if it is hot and windy. For larger shrubs and trees, leave a hose dribbling around the base for an hour. Your hedges can be watered with a home-made “trickle hose” – a length of old hose pierced with tiny holes. It may officially be summer but the Great British weather likes to keep us guessing. Keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is forecast. It is best to keep your tender plants indoors until the middle of the month. Mowing …… A buzzing lawn mower is the quintessential sound of summer – this is definitely the time for mowing. Little and often is better than a big attack every once in a while, so try to cut the grass once a week. If we do have a heat wave, consider letting the grass grow a little longer than usual to help it through the dry spell. Pests ……. With a bit of luck, it will be nice and warm in the garden now. But you will not be the 18 | miles platting spotlight

only one enjoying the weather, so keep an eye out for pests. Greenfly and blackfly in particular love the heat. If you catch caterpillar and aphid infestations early enough, they can be dealt with by hand. Aphids and other sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses. Feed …… Remember to regularly feed any bedding plants in pots/baskets to ensure your blooms last all summer long. Deadhead as you go along to promote more flowers.

Remember the birds …… Don’t wait for winter to feed the birds in your garden. If the hot weather continues and the ground hardens, it will be much more difficult for them to find food. Put some feed out to supplement their diet and help them build their reserves for winter. Birds love to splash about on hot summer days, so why not invest in a garden bird bath; they make a great centre piece for the lawn.

Q&A Q&A

Q. How can I get rid of slugs? A. Place shallow containers of beer as bait in the garden so slugs will crawl into them and drown. Or, put on a pair of gloves and pick slugs up by hand late in the day or evening and drop them into soapy water.

Q. When can I cut back the leaves of daffodils and tulips? A. Wait until the leaves have turned yellow before cutting them back with scissors. Don’t pull on the leaves, or the bulb may come up with them.
